The group of 7 strains of facultatively heterofermentative lactobacilli (FHL) of the non starter lactic acid bacteria (NSLAB) isolated from semi-hard cheeses using a well agar diffusion assay possessed a different level of inhibition activity against 16 different strains of <I>Clostridium</I> sp. belonging to the species <I>Cl. butyricum, Cl. tyrobutyricum, Cl. beijerinckii</I>, and <I>Cl. sporogenes</I>. Two selected strains with the production of partially indentified anticlostridially active inhibitory substances, <I>Lb. paracasei</I> ST68 (producing hydrogen peroxide) and <I>Lb. paracasei</I> 171R2 (producing bacteriocin and hydrogen peroxide), were tested for the inhibition activity against gas producing <I>Cl. butyricum</I> 10702 and <I>Cl. tyrobutyricum</I> 184 in cheese slurry. The effects of both strains were different in reducing the numbers of gas producing <I>Cl. butyricum</I> 10702 by > 3 log cycles and <I>Cl. tyrobutyricum</I> 184 by > 1 log cycles in cheese slurry during the tested storage periods of 24 days at 13°C. The <I>Cl. tyrobutyricum</I> strains isolated from spoiled cheese were identified by species-specific PCR for <I>Cl. tyrobutyricum. </I>

In the five decades since the founding of the ASME Design Engineering Division, the important problem of vibration isolation has been attacked first through the design of passive spring-damper suspensions and later by the use of active and semi-active elements. This paper reviews the historical development of theoretical concepts necessary for the design of isolation systems and indicates how control theory began to influence vibration isolation in the last half of this period. Practical active and semi-active suspensions have only recently become possible with the advent of powerful but relatively inexpensive signal processors. To illustrate these developments for engineers who have not been intimately involved with active systems, only simple vibrational system models will be discussed, although some modern hardware will be shown which is now being applied to complex systems. Instead of attempting to review the many theoretical concepts which have been proposed for active systems, this article will focus on a relatively simple idea with which the author has been associated over the past thirty years; namely the “skyhook” damper. This idea came through purely theoretical studies but is now used in combination with other concepts in production suspension systems. Two quite different application areas will be discussed. The first involves stable platforms to provide extreme isolation for delicate manufacturing operations against seismic inputs and the second involves automotive suspensions. Although similar concepts are found in these two application areas, the widely varying requirements result in very different suspension hardware. The special case of the semi-active damper, which requires very little control power and is presently reaching production, will also be discussed.

This study explores the effect of semi-active friction damping on vibration isolation systems by means of numerical simulation. Since the Lugre friction model can describe many phenomena observed in laboratories, it is chosen to provide accurate friction force model for the analysis and simulations. The drawback of the passive friction damping system is that it decreases the resonance response at the cost of worsening the performance for high frequencies. A semi-active control method (skyhook method) is used to tune the normal force so that the energy dissipated by the friction force is maximized. Such semi-active friction damping system is simple but efficient, and it can achieve result almost as good as that of active systems. Results from numerical simulations show that compared with passive system, semi-active control method decreases the response significantly for both low and high frequencies, with harmonic and random excitations.

Semi-active suspensions can achieve performance close to that of active suspensions with much lower cost and complexity. They use an active damper in parallel with a passive spring. The forces in the damper are generated merely by the modulation of fluid-flow orifices based on a control scheme involving feedback variables. This paper presents an original control strategy employing only directly measurable variables in vehicle applications. The relative displacement and relative velocity across the suspension are the only feedback signals and the damper force can be continuously modulated (as opposed to on-off control). Vibration isolation performance of the new semi-active scheme is compared to semi-active sky-hook suspension, as well as passive and active suspensions.

This paper proposes a semi-active variable stiffness vibration isolation system based on electromagnetic spring for the low-frequency vibration isolation of mass-varying objects. It is achieved by four straight leaf springs in parallel to an electromagnetic spring system composed of a single electromagnet and a permanent magnet. The equivalent magnetic circuit method is used to compute electromagnetic force of the electromagnetic spring system, and mathematical model of the semi-active vibration isolation system is established according to Maxwell's equations. The nonlinear mathematical model is linearized at the equilibrium point by using the Taylor series expansion theorem to establish linear state-space representation of the system, and then using the traditional PID control method, a double closed-loop feedback control system of the inner current loop and outer location loop is designed. By controlling the current in the coil, the equivalent stiffness and electromagnetic force of the system are variable to achieve semi-active control. Furthermore, the control block diagram of the semi-active vibration isolation system is built based on Simulink software, then make a simulation analysis to the vibration isolation performance of the system and compare the effects of vibration isolation with inner current loop control and without inner current loop control, respectively. Finally, the experiments prove the correctness of the theory. It concludes that this semi-active vibration isolation system is a vibration isolation system with broad application prospects, which has fast current response, high vibration isolation efficiency, and an excellent vibration isolation effect for the low-frequency disturbance of mass-varying objects.

Variable stiffness f2mc are investigated for vibration isolation through analysis and experiments. The f2mc are novel structures that have been shown to achieve significant changes in stiffness through simple valve control. The objective of this research is to develop analysis tools to investigate the f2mc variable modulus system for semi-active vibration isolation and to validate the results through experiments. A non-linear analytical model of an isolation mount based on the f2mc tube with a proportional valve is developed. Analysis results indicate that the f2mc-based isolation mount is effective for reducing the force transmitted to the foundation and that the transmissibility ratio can be tuned via proportional valve control. Experimental results agree with analysis results and validate semi-active vibration isolation using a proportional valve.

Structures designed against earthquake loads based on using control systems may experience explosions during their lifetime. In this paper, the performance of a hybrid control system composed of a low-damping base isolation and a supplemental magneto-rheological (MR) damper under external explosion has been studied. Base isolation system has the ability of decreasing the maximum structural response under blast loadings by shifting the period of the structure. In addition, MR damper improves the base isolation system performance by controlling the base drift of the structure. Hence, in this paper, the capability of a hybrid base isolation system equipped with an MR damper at the base has been evaluated in reducing the maximum structural response and base drift under external blast loadings. To determine the voltage of the semi-active MR damper, the H2/Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) and clipped-optimal control algorithms have been applied. For numerical simulations, a 10-storey shear frame subjected to blast loadings applied on different floors has been considered and the performance of the hybrid isolation system and MR damper has been studied. The results have proven the effectiveness of the hybrid control system in controlling the maximum response and base drift of the isolated structure against spherical external explosion. Furthermore, comparing the performance of the hybrid passive and semi-active base isolation systems indicates that the semi-active hybrid base isolation system is more effective in reducing the root-mean-square (RMS) value of the base drift. Similarly, it has been found that the semi-active hybrid base isolation system also performs better than the high-damping base isolation system.

According to the disadvantages of the effects that base isolation was limited to high frequency components of seismic wave, smart base isolation system consisting of rolling isolation bearing and magnetorheological damper was applied to structural vibration control. Based on magnetorheological damper employing a Sigmoid model, a semi-acive fuzzy control strategy suitable for smart base isolation was presented. Simulation analysis was carried out to a two-story steel frame structure employing smart base isolation in the action of different kinds and magnitudes of earthquake wave. The results show that smart base isolation system is reliable and effective, and seismic response can be controlled effectively by semi-active fuzzy strategy.

Within this work, a six-axis parallel vibration isolation platform with semi-active control ability is investigated. Traditional magnetorheological (MR) dampers could supply large output force and long stroke, but it also comes with a large self-weight. This problem is more serious when several MR dampers are needed in a parallel platform. Firstly, a double-piston MR damper have been developed, which will brings a small self-weight feature to the damper. Hyperbolic tangent model have been used to describe damper's nonlinear hysteresis. Using six of this double-piston MR damper, a parallel vibration isolation platform based on a cubic Stewart platform mechanism has been designed. Dynamical model of this platform has been built and simulated. Numerical simulation results in frequency domain indicate that the parallel semi-active vibration isolation platform has desirable vibration isolation properties in all six axes.

Background: Single rooms are in short supply in many hospitals. Aim: To evaluate the impact of introducing semi-permanent pods to convert multi-occupancy bays into single occupancy pods. Methods: We performed a 24-month pre–post observational study in a 15-bed paediatric high dependency unit. Three semi-permanent pods were installed in February 2013, in the middle of the 24-month period. The percentage of missed isolation days and the proportion of days for which >4 patients required isolation (which would exceed existing isolation facilities) were compared for the year prior to the pods with the first year of pod use using a Fisher’s exact tests. Results: Missed isolation days fell from 58.2% (662/1138; 95% confidence interval [CI], 55.3–61.0) pre-pod to 14.8% (205/1382; 95% CI, 13.0–16.8) during the first year of pod use ( P <0.001). The percentage of days for which >4 patients required isolation was 74.5% overall (95% CI, 70.5–78.8), and increased from 63% (95% CI, 56.2–69.4) pre-Pod to 86% (95% CI, 80.9–90.3) during pod use ( P <0.001). Discussion: The introduction of three semi-permanent pods was feasible in our paediatric HDU setting and reduced the number of missed isolation days, and hence transmission risk, for important hospital pathogens.

Recently we have shown that the performance of vegetable seeds can be enhanced by matriconditioning in the presence of fixed amounts of chemically inert carriers, such as Micro-Cel™E and Zonolite™ Vermiculite, and water (Khan et al. National Symp. Stand Estab. Hort. Crops, p.19, 1990). This procedure, however, does not allow separation of seeds from the carrier during seed conditioning. This problem has been overcome by enclosing the seed in a semi-permeable membrane and placing the seed-membrane system in contact with the carrier and water (or test solution). By this means, the equilibrium moisture content, needed for seed conditioning is attained readily. This procedure allows conditioning of large amounts of seeds and eliminates the contamination of seeds from the carrier. The application of this procedure in seed enhancement within the seed industry will be discussed.

This article designs an active/semi-active hybrid isolator using magnetorheological elastomer isolator and piezoelectric stack actuator to suppress the wide-frequency vibration in precision platform, which can be switched to active isolator, semi-active one, and passive one according to the spectrum signature of the excitation. First, the structure of the hybrid isolator is introduced. Then, the dynamic model of the hybrid isolation system is established, the model parameters are identified, and the switching condition for the hybrid isolator is derived by experiments. Next, considering variable amplitude and frequency vibration of the isolated system, an active and semi-active fuzzy switch controller is designed for piezoelectric stack actuator and magnetorheological elastomer hybrid isolator, which are independent of the system model, self-tuning, and robust. Finally, the numerical simulations are conducted under variable frequency excitations to evaluate the performance of the designed fuzzy switch controller, and the results show that the hybrid isolator, combined with the fuzzy switch controller, can attenuate full frequency vibration effectively.

Isolation of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (causal agent of yam anthracnose) from soil is difficult because of the presence of fast growing micro-organisms like Rhizoctonia spp., Rhizopus spp., Penicillium spp. and bacteria. Therefore, a semi-selective medium consisting of antimicrobial agents such as pencycuron 50 mg L−1, tolclofos-methyl 10 mg L−1, streptomycin sulphate 100 mg L−1, chloramphenicol 100 mg L−1 and chlortetracycline 100 mg L−1 was developed using potato dextrose agar as the basal medium. The procedure involved screening of candidate fungicides, developing a suitable combination of antimicrobial agents, assessing the proposed semi-selective medium and adjustment of pH of the medium to 5. The effectiveness of the medium is due to selective inhibition of micro-organisms by the antimicrobial agents and the development of distinct salmon-pink colonies of C. gloeosporioides.

This review focuses on studying passive vibration isolation techniques and their applications. Advantages and disadvantages of different vibration isolation techniques will be compared in order to find an innovative method to reduce seating suspension system vibration and improve the ride comfort of vehicles’ drivers. Quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) isolators of high-static–low-dynamic stiffness are found to have good application prospects in low-frequency vibration isolation. In order to improve the isolation performance of the seating suspension system, a specially made seat cushion will be studied where a quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) isolator such as a double-diamond isolator is selected as one of the cells/units/elements of the seat cushion mattress. The double-diamond isolator structure does not represent the whole seating suspension system. The transmissibility ratio of the double-diamond isolator is evaluated by analytical and simulation models and compared to that of a conventional linear spring isolator. Although the performance of the passive vibration isolation/control system is usually worse than that of the active or semi-active control system, the cost of the passive vibration isolation/control system is lower than that of the active and semi-active control system, and the relative simplicity of adding a vibration isolation cushion mattress in an existing passive seating suspension system makes it low in cost, easy to implement, and more attractive than the active and semi-active vibration control systems.

A semi-active shock isolation technology with magnetorheological devices was systematically studied. The magnetorheological devices consist of magnetorheological dampers (MRD) and magnetorheological elstomers (MRE) isolator. Based on the method of Lyapunov function, the semi-active control strategy and the control algorithm were developed to minimize the relative movement of the system. The simulation results show that, compared with the passive devices, the semi-active control technology in the paper is effective to reduce the relative displacement and the shock acceleration of protected equipment. And the system will go back to the stable state within ultrashort time.
