One of the main directions of logistic support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is medical support which is aimed at life safeguard and health of military personnel, well-timed and efficient provision of medical care in the event of injuries, injuries and diseases, fast renewal of combat power and ability to work in different conditions of its handling and at different period of time. The readiness of medical service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the medical support of the troops depends on the well-timed organization of medical supplies and the refilling of medical supplies full and complete. The qualitative and efficient allocation of medical equipment and medical supplies is a determining factor in this process. The aim of the work – reasoning of the irregularity of distribution logistics in the unified logistic system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the study of the main aspects of management of the distribution of medical supplies from the position of military pharmaceutical logistics. To get the purpose of the research, the analysis of domestic scientific sources and the current normative and legal base of Ukraine have been carried out. Research methods are: information search, comparison, systemization, semantic analysis, synthesis and modeling. In the conditions of logistic support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other components of the security and defense forces of Ukraine, the logistic function of the distribution of logistical equipment, inventory, military equipment and services (food, bath and laundry services, etc.) should ensure the activity of troops (forces) in peacetime and war time. It is the guarantee of the ability to ensure the defense of the state and appropriate response to military threats to the national security of Ukraine, efficiently using available potential and resources. Distribution logistics from the position of military pharmaceutical logistics is the management of all functional subsystems of the medical supplies and health services of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in order to optimize the distribution of the material flow (purchased medical supplies) from the supplier to the final consumer (according to the applications of the Military Medical Clinical Centers of the Regions). Same, distributive logistics in the structure of a unified logistic support system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine does not carry a commercial component, and its functions consist in planning, organization of distribution, control and regulation of the logistic process of distribution of material and technical means (including medical equipment and supplies), inventory, military equipment, services (catering, bath and laundry service, etc.). According to the authors, the term «marketing logistics» is not possible to use as a single system of logistic support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and in its subsystems. To sum it up, it was suggested to use the term «distributive logistics». On the basis of theoretical generalization of the data of scientific literature and normative legal acts, the main aspects of management of the distribution of medical equipment and supplies from the standpoint of military pharmaceutical logistics are studied. The functions of distributive logistics are defined, the model of the current logistic chain of distribution of medical equipment and supplies in the medical service of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is constructed. It is noted that in order to ensure the qualitative and efficient distribution of medical equipment and supplies, a regulatory and legal framework which regulates the division of powers between institutions and units of medical supplies and defines the responsibility for their implementation in the current conditions of the reformation of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

At the end of World War II the Greek Communist party (KKE) claimed that it would seek an accommodation with its domestic opponents, but the party soon launched a full-scale insurrection on its own initiative in the expectation of receiving decisive support from the Soviet Union.With civil war under way, the head of the KKE, Nikos Zahariadis, repeatedly told Soviet of ficials that victory was certain if the Greek Communists could obtain funding, weapons, and other equipment from the USSR and its allies.Although Soviet leaders were concerned that the KKE's aggressiveness would provoke a U.S. reaction, they permitted the clandestine shipment of large quantities of supplies that delayed but could not avert the insurgents'defeat.U.S.of ficials at the time largely misperceived the causes of the insurrection, but they correctly sensed that the KKE's dependence on Soviet-bloc assistance would ensure that a Communist victory would bring Greece into Moscow's orbit.

In terms of cooperation for warfare equipment and other military needs, Indonesia relies on suppliers from abroad, and this continuously impacts the country's needs. If an embargo is imposed on the country, it will pose a significant challenge to national defense, thus requiring anticipation of embargo sanctions in terms of national defense. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative, based on an in-depth understanding and focused on Anticipating Embargo Sanctions in Implementing National Defense. The steps to be taken in anticipating embargo sanctions from other countries include not relying solely on one country or bloc for cooperation in the field of national defense and military needs. It is necessary to consider collaboration with other blocs worldwide. The country should also strive for self-sufficiency in military equipment needs, fostering innovation, and manufacturing military equipment domestically. There should no longer be dependence on other countries for military equipment.

This study examines the prospects of arms supplies from the United States, the EU and the United Kingdom to Ukraine in the context of the ongoing military conflict. The paper analyzes the issue of expanding the nomenclature, up to the provision of American-made jet aircraft complexes, the supplied equipment and the process of transition from stocks of military equipment both produced by NATO and the Soviet model to newly produced samples. The problem of the impact of a special military operation on the defense industry of London, Washington and Brussels is considered separately. There is a tendency to increase the value of shares of defense companies and their profits. The paper concludes that the increase in military production with the further course of the conflict and the supply of weapons will grow both quantitatively and qualitatively. In addition, the existing problems of the defense industry of the United States, Great Britain and the European Union in the current period are revealed - the high cost of products, issues of standardization with Soviet weapons, its complexity in using and training personnel. The main conclusion of the work can be called the statement of a significant time required for the deployment of mass industrial production.

The study aims to analyze the impact of the defense industry on the level of employment, assessment of prospects for cooperation between Egypt and developed countries in the field of global security. Methods. The study draws on methods of comparative, structural, and logical analysis. Results. Cooperation with economically developed countries strengthens Egypt's defense industry. The higher the country's gross domestic product, the more funds the government can allocate to the development of the defense industry. Conclusions. Despite Egypt's growing capabilities in the production of military equipment, the country's economy remains dependent on external supplies.

The Republic of Korea aims to become one of the key players in the global arms market by 2027. The military conflict in Ukraine allowed South Korea not only to increase the supply of military products to NATO countries, but also win additional market share in the East Asian, taking advantage of the decline in Russian military exports. At the same time, South Korea is actively signing contracts for the supply of military equipment with the countries of the Middle East. The growth in exports of South Korean military-industrial products is due to the fact that currently the ROK’s weapons have a number of competitive advantages for buyers in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. First of all, South Korean weapons are compatible with American systems. However, the cost of equipment from the Republic of Korea is sometimes several times lower than military-industrial complex products from the United States or Eurozone countries. However, despite the bright plans in the medium term, the Republic of Korea may face several challenges including inevitable competition with defense industry leaders such as the USA, Russia, Germany, France and the potential worsening of relations with China due to the active increase in arms supplies to India and Vietnam, that could limit the rapid growth of exports of the South Korean military-industrial complex.

The purpose of the article is to analyze the current threats and challenges of the economic direction, which affect the defense capabilities of our country during the war. Considering the military security strategy of Ukraine, the economic conditions for the implementation of the State policy in the military sphere are singled out. As a result of the study, new threats were identified that arose as a result of the war and affect the provision of adequate defense capabilities of the country. The following problems that arose as a result of military actions were assessed: the hindrance of delivering weapons and foodstuffs to the territory where active military operations are taking place; implementation of export-import operations; decrease in currency operations; increase in fuel prices, which lead to an increase in the material and technical costs of the defense sector; rising inflation; destruction of most military facilities of the defense complex and transport junctions, etc. The following types of military assistance received by Ukraine were considered: receiving equipment under the terms of lend-lease, non-lethal defense equipment under the conditions of direct commercial supplies, free assistance in the form of military-technical assistance and financial resources for the purchase of equipment and weapons under government guarantees. Prospects for further research in this direction are to solve the above problems by attracting additional funding from various countries in the form of loans and grants, as well as the implementation of appropriate measures by the State authorities, the National Bank of Ukraine and other institutions that actively cooperate with the State. The priority economic measures after the end of the war are a timely inventory of the entire defense complex of the country in order to evaluate the equipment that is available; analysis of all the losses caused by the war and the real possibilities of the country to rebuild the defense-industrial complex; formation of a clear plan for the development of not only the defense sector, but all other industries, which will allow ensuring the normal functioning of the country's economy; review of all government programs in the defense sector, in order to exclude inefficient ones; emphasis on priority developments; revision of long-term programs, since they do not take into account the consequences of the war and possible hyperinflation in the country in the postwar period.

Background: Effective newborn resuscitation in healthcare institutions depends on factors like supervisor support, knowledge, availability of functional equipment, and self-efficacy of healthcare professionals. This study investigated self-efficacy and related factors in newborn resuscitation among healthcare professionals in Chipata District Health facilities. Methodology: This cross-sectional study involved 85 healthcare professionals selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire on self-efficacy for newborn resuscitation, completed after obtaining consent. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 21, employing Pearson chi-square or Fisher’s exact tests. A multivariate binary logistic regression model analyzed associated factors, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Overall, 69% of respondents exhibited high self-efficacy in newborn resuscitation. Among females, 88.5% reported low self-efficacy compared to 11.5% of males. High self-efficacy was seen in 83.1% of those trained in the past five years. Additionally, 58.8% demonstrated high knowledge levels. Supervisor support was reported by 56%, but 85.7% of facilities lacked functional resuscitation equipment and supplies. Conclusion: Despite high self-efficacy levels, gaps remain in the provision of newborn resuscitation and professional self-efficacy. Ineffective supervision and lack of resuscitation equipment hindered practice experience and full commitment, especially among female participants.

Based on the analysis of the provisions of regulatory documents and existing approaches to the planning of the service support to the elements of the mechanized infantry battalion under their participation in stabilization actions, problem questions were formulated and suggestions were made in order to create the stock of detergents to wash clothing items in the laundry department of the service support platoon; estimating possible losses in personal, weapons, military equipment and other materials, as well as taking into account specific conditions under which the assigned mission is to be accomplished. The main factors that influence the consumption of supplies and resources are determined taking in consideration the tasks the elements of the mechanized infantry battalion carry out under their participation in stabilization actions such as increasing the protection of the state border, defense of the state border, isolation of the crisis area, conducting anti-sabotage struggle, protection and defense of key installations and communications, providing safety of the avenues of approach, implementation of restricting activities; providing humanitarian aid. Specific measures are foreseen to create additional stocks of supplies within the combat units and on the vehicles of the service support platoon, regarding the tasks assigned to the elements of the mechanized infantry battalion and specific conditions for their implementation. The suggestion was made to use the experience of mechanized infantry units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations which participated inthe antiterrorist operation (operation of the joint forces) to planservice support considering the tasks performed by the elements of the mechanized infantry battalion which participated in stabilization actions.

Introdução:O comprometimento de determinados grupos musculares e alterações sensório motoras são algumas das características apresentadas por crianças com paralisia cerebral, fazendo-se necessária a utilização de andadores e estabilizadores para auxiliar no ortostatismo e na marcha desses pacientes. Atualmente, existem equipamentos que favorecem estes aspectos, porém o custo ainda é bastante alto, tornando-os inacessíveis a uma grande parcela da população. Com o intuito de se apresentar uma alternativa de qualidade e custo reduzido, desenvolveu-se na UTFPR um andador/ estabilizador baseado no protocolo PediaSuit™, confeccionado em PVC. O suporte é dado através de elastômeros fixados a um cinto, permitindo assim uma marcha mais próxima do natural. Objetivo: Avaliar a marcha e a postura de crianças com Paralisia Cerebral a partir do uso de uma Unidade Terapêutica Domiciliar de baixo custo e baixa mecanização. Método: Foram realizados testes visando analisar a resistência mecânica do material utilizado e ensaios com o protótipo construído. O PVC mostrou ser um material com alta resistência nos testes de flexão e impacto. A massa máxima suportada pelo andador no teste realizado foi de aproximadamente 226 kg. Após a avaliação do equipamento, três crianças foram filmadas utilizando o andador em PVC e um andador comum. Aspectos da marcha e da postura foram avaliados por trinta fisioterapeutas através desses vídeos.Resultados: O andador em PVC apresentou melhores resultados em relação a todos os aspectos da marcha avaliados, promovendo uma deambulação mais próxima do normal. Em relação à resistência mecânica, os ensaios mostram que o PVC Ø32mm é um material adequado para a confecção de equipamentos de tecnologia assistiva, por ser capaz de suportar cargas elevadas sem se romper. A utilização desse material também proporcionou uma redução significativa no custo final do equipamento
Introduction: The involvement of certain muscle groups and sensorimotor deficits are some of the characteristics displayed by children with cerebral palsy, making necessary the use of stabilizers and gait trainers to assist posture and gait of those patients. There are assistive technology devices that promote these aspects, but the cost is still quite high, making them inaccessible to most people. In order to present an alternative with lower cost, a PVC stabilizer/ gait trainer based on PediaSuit™ protocol was developed at UTFPR and Vitória Research Center. The support is provided by elastomers fixed to a belt, thereby allowing a more natural gait pattern. Objective: To evaluate the gait and posture of children with cerebral palsy during the use of a low cost/ low mechanization Therapy Unit Homecare. Method: Some tests were carried out to determine the strength of the prototype and the material itself. PVC proved to be a material with high strength in bending and impact tests. The maximum mass supported by the walker in the test conducted was approximately 226 kg. After evaluating the equipment, images of three children using a reguar gait trainer and the PVC home care unit were taken. Aspects of gait and posture were analysed by thirty physiotherapists through these videos. Results: The PVC home care unit showed better results in regarding all aspects of gait evaluated by promoting closer to normal gait. The mechanical strength tests show that PVC Ø32mm is a suitable material for fabrication of assistive technology equipment, to be able to withstand high loads without breaking. The use of this material also provided a significant reduction in the final cost of the product.

Дисертація є комплексним науковим дослідженням проблем кримінально-правової оцінки використання захисних засобів, що вражають автономно. Запропоновано для позначення живих істот, пристроїв, отруйних продуктів харчування, що призначені для захисту охоронюваних законом суспільних відносин, за відсутності особи, яка здійснює захист, шляхом заподіяння шкоди тому, хто вчиняє посягання, використовувати термін «захисні засоби, що вражають автономно». Встановлено зміст та обсяг поняття захисних засобів, що вражають автономно. Вивчено історичний та зарубіжний досвід регламентації використання захисних засобів, що вражають автономно. Досліджено правові підстави, на основі яких використання захисних засобів, що вражають автономно, з огляду на конкретні обставини потрібно визнавати протиправним або правомірним діянням. Запропоновано оцінювати використання захисних засобів, що вражають автономно, з позицій вчення про необхідну оборону. Виведено правила кримінально-правової кваліфікації заподіяння шкоди за допомогою таких засобів. На підставі отриманих у ході дисертації результатів розроблено пропозиції щодо вдосконалення законодавства України про кримінальну відповідальність і практику його застосування. The thesis is a scientific research on the criminal estimation of using of protective equipment, affecting autonomously. Living beings, devices, poisonous food that are designed to protect public relations in the absence of the person, who protects through inflicting injury to those, who commit assault, are proposed to be referred using the term «protective equipment, affecting autonomously». The content and scope of the concept of protective equipment, affecting autonomously is determined. Historical and international experience of regulating of using of protective equipment, affecting autonomously was studied. After studying of the legal grounds for using of protective equipment, affecting autonomously it was concluded that they should be recognized as lawful or unlawful act. Using of protective equipment, affecting autonomously is offered to be estimated from the standpoint of the theory of self-defense. The rules of criminal legal qualification of inflicting damages by such means are pointed out. Propositions on improvement of the legislation of Ukraine on criminal liability and its application are based on results in the course of the research.

This chapter deals with the application of lean and inclusive practices in order to mitigate the problems of the healthcare system in emergency care units (UPAS), especially when dealing with people with disabilities. The lack of qualified professionals, endless waiting queues causing overcrowding, waste, lack of supplies, and equipment are, among others, common “pathogenic” examples in the UPAS. The combination of practices and methods to combat waste and add value derived from Lean healthcare with the assistive technologies are fundamental for the adequacy of accessibility and improvement of care for people with disabilities. These practices provide mobility and autonomy to these patients, allowing their inclusion, improving their self-esteem and quality of life. The objective of this study was to investigate what is known about facilities and difficulties in the use of auxiliary devices, lean and inclusive methods, and practices to improve the care of people with disabilities in UPAS.

Numerous technological advancements like 3-D Printing, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Drones, Robots, and Blockchain are now being inscribed for their ability to change the health care industry and make it a more automated and effective field. Various tools related to AI, like Google, DeepMind, Atomwise, Chatbot, Enlitic, Freenome, and Buoy Health, are helpful in makingthe health industry more efficient. There is another technology which is nanomicelle that can be used for effective drug delivery to treat various cancers, including breast, colon, and lung cancer. Moreover, self-assembling peptide nanoparticles that were prepared from SARSCov-1 spike (S) protein, successfully induced neutralizing antibodies against the coronavirus, subsequently preventing infection of Vero cells. Furthermore, the application of 3D printing in medicine can provide many benefits, including the customization and personalization of medical products, drugs, and equipment; cost-effectiveness; increased productivity; democratization of design and manufacturing; and enhanced collaboration. IoT enables real-time alerting, tracking, and monitoring, which permits hands-on treatment, better accuracy, apt intervention by doctors, and improves patient care delivery results. The other most promising application isblockchain in the healthcare sector for identity management, dynamic patient consent, and management of supply chains for medical supplies and pharmaceuticals. In addition, there are several case studies that describe the benefits of emerging tools, like recently the use of Emerging Technologies for the study, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with COVID-19 by using Deep Convolutional neural networks (CNN), which is a widely used deep learning architecture, enabled distinguishing between COVID-19 and other causes of pneumonia through chest X-ray image analysis.

Offsets are an economic development tool used to seek technology from foreign suppliers as part of an international sale of equipment. Although offsets practice has been in existence for long, offsets have only become increasingly popular in the past two decades; thus a vital component of defence acquisition for many governments around the world. Most scholarly work on offsets have not clearly addressed the theoretical underpinnings behind why offsets are required as part of defence acquisition. What is the rationale for offsets being incorporated as part of a defence acquisition? This paper addresses the rationale for offsets in defence acquisition from a theoretical perspective. The chapter defines offsets, discusses the role of offsets in defence acquisition, outlines costs and benefits of offsets and undertakes an in-depth discussion on the various theories on the rationale for offsets in defence acquisition. This chapter argues rationale for offsets as a discipline within the defence acquisition framework can be discussed on a solid theoretical framework.

Abstract Not so long ago, technical standards in the United States telephone industry were determined primarily by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. To be sure, AT&T had to coordinate with foreign telecommunications entities, independent telephone companies, and the United States Department of Defense, but the degree of coordination was relatively minor, and AT&T had substantial latitude in deciding on the standards that would be used. However, three forces have caused this situation to change dramatically. First, because of the entry of large numbers of competing suppliers of equipment and services into the United States telecommunications industry, standard setting has moved from the technical concern of a single firm to a factor with important implications for competition. As a result, the processes by which standards are set are now subject to detailed scrutiny by both the regulatory authorities and the courts. In a sense, telecommunications standards have become too important to leave their determination solely to the telephone companies.

Power transformers, are basically used for stepping up& down the voltage levels. They are the primary equipment used in power transmission system. So it is primary to maintain all the transformers located geographically, but due to lack of man power it is impossible to monitor regularly. Due to these reasons, if a failure occurs in transformer may cause the network power shutdown. Though there are lot of protection measures that accompany a transformer, but by providing a online monitoring system will increase the reliability and reporting instantaneous fault confidently. This paper gives out the details in design and construction of an automatic monitoring system for power transformer parameters. A node-mcu module [esp8266] was enabled to monitoring of voltage, oil level and temperature (oil & winding) on a typical power transformer. With the internet of things (IoT), a self-defense system is designed and implemented for the transformer. In this system Transformer parameter are continuously marked and a graph is plotted. If the level of the parameter increases than the actual value, it gives buzzer alarm, if no action taken then the whole system will be tripped safely in power transformers.

"deteriorating situation of the mountain peasantry became a defense problem, did this question of 'rural exchange' receive high priority in the Economic Programme of the government [SPP, 1985]. Agrarian investment in the 1980-84 period was maintained at a high level, equivalent to about half the national total. This was almost exclusively concentrated on the APP: that is, in about half the modern sector or about a quarter of the whole of agriculture. This investment included extensive irrigation works, imports of tractors and combine harvesters, coffee reno-vation, a sugar mill, palm oil plantations, intensive dairy and beef breeding units, as well as the recapitalisation of the new state farms ruined by their previous owners. It formed part of a long-term strategy discussed below and thus did not itself add much to production during the first five years, although it did help compensate declines in the large private production sector. Given the external terms of trade (which had deteriorated by 40 per cent between 1977 and 1983 [CEPAL, 1984]) and the gradual recovery of production, the agricultural sector was not in a position to generate a sufficiently large surplus to finance its own investment. Even though the sector generated three times more exports than it absorbed imports [MIDINRA, 1985], the foreign exchange thus released was needed to maintain basic consumption elsewhere in the economy. Similarly, food supplies over and above the requirements of the agrarian workforce were needed to maintain the rest of the population; there was no significant capital goods sector to absorb these wagegoods [FitzGerald, 1982]. Thus, this investment was basically financed from abroad, initially with long-term development loans from multilateral institutions, but as US agression increased these funds were cut off and replaced by commercial credits from both capitalist and socialist suppliers. This was economically justifiable in that the increment in exports (or substituted imports) would have a compensatory balance of payments effect within a few years. Eventually, however, a net exchange surplus would have to be generated so that agroexports should expand more rapidly than domestic foodstuffs rather than the reverse, as had been the case between 1980 and 1984, when popular living standards had a higher priority than the trade balance. None the less, the major shortcoming of this accumulation model was undoubtedly its almost exclusive concentration on the APP as the focus of modernisation. Large private farmers might not wish to invest, but the middle farmers and the co-operatives were also neglected in machinery assignment, cattle restocking, and irrigation equipment. The political objective of preventing the re-emergence of capitalist accumulation or the reconstruc-tion of a rural bourgeoisie (albeit on a petty scale) appears to have been the main justification. However, the cost in terms of production was high, and in any case such a sector could have been simply controlled through the existing fiscal, banking and commercial mechanisms, let alone the eventual application of the Agrarian Reform laws." Such conditions might cause serious injury or even death. As well as the human impact, unsafe conditions have a significant impact on operational excellence and the financial state of a company. Companies are committed to ensure a safe environment by setting safety polices, conducting safety training, fire prevention systems, safety manuals and signboards and providing safety gears. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is safety equipment that can maintain the safety of employees in hazardous conditions, such as hot surfaces and toxic chemicals that can cause serious injuries and illness. PPE is sometimes referred to as the last line of defense. Some workers might not comply with safety policies or refuse to wear the PPE. To overcome the manual safety checks and compliance of employees, in this paper we propose an AI-powered computer vision automation solution leveraging the state of the object detection model. Computer vision is the field that mimics human vision to extract purposeful information from videos and images. Computer vision brings about various functionalities to perform tasks such as object detection, object classification, object identification and object verification. The proposed solution is developed by using a computer vision technique that detects various types of PPEs in real time. The main purpose of this project is to detect a presence of eight classes (person, helmet color: Red, Yellow, Blue and White, head, vest, glasses). The best results are achieved by applying YOLOv5 on a set of construction site images with corresponding annotations in YOLO format. The proposed solution automates the process of detection and monitoring PPE and employee behavior in operation fields in real-time. Automating the detection can reflect the business value by reducing the timeframe for tracking, creating a safe environment that in turn can increase the productivity and safety of the workers and reduce the costs of operations. The proposed solution includes all the components of data ingestion, data processing, object detection model and deployment on the edge device or server to improve safety.

This article describes the benefits offered by a new type of numerical protection system, applied to gas turbine generators. World-wide more than 100 different generators with a total rating of about 6000 MW are equipped with this type of protection system. This protection system is completely independent of other power plant equipment, with its own DC power supplies, input isolating auxiliary current and voltage transformers and optocoupler or relay type binary input/output devices as well as serial communication links. The heart of the system is a multiprocessor high speed bus capable of handling the communication between the measuring inputs, the protection algorithm processor (s) and the output units. The system makes use of a large library of modular, pretested protective functions. Continuous self-monitoring enhances the availability of the complete protective system. Modern, well coordinated protection and turbine control systems offer new advantages to the user such as faster handling of emergency situations through the availability of more and better information together with the possibility of faster and more detailed fault analysis. In addition, a reduction in the time required for commissioning, e.g. for cables and instrument transformers, can be realized. This paper is presented to provide some understanding of the application of the protection system introduced here, in particular in connection with the ABB gas turbine generator unit type GT11N. Also introduced are the main components involved, such as numerical protective functions, self-monitoring of protection systems, and data exchange.

Abstract The paper describes the autonomous offshore power system (AOPS) — an innovative power and data communications system — that is being prepared for introduction to remote, deep-water applications. This paper consolidates technical and market information about the AOPS presented in prior OTC papers and contextualizes it for the Brasilian offshore upstream oil and gas sector. The AOPS is currently being introduced into shallow-water environments for support of mobile and static assets, such as data-gathering systems, surface and subsea robotics, and operating equipment for the offshore energy, defense, security, and research markets. The AOPS uses multiple energy resources (ocean energy and solar) and storage technologies (rechargeable batteries and pre-charged fuel-cells) to provide ultra-reliable energy supplies and data communications in remote, offshore locations. An AOPS can provide primary, redundant, or emergency power and data communications capabilities. For instance, an AOPS can provide first power to a greenfield development, enable 24/7 leak detection monitoring and reporting, provide permanent in-situ power for a brownfield upgrade, or avoid the need for replacement of a failed umbilical to a stranded asset. Innovative AOPS technologies are currently in pilot testing for shallow-water depth sites in temperate climate zone locations. Advancements currently underway to various AOPS technologies will deliver a system suitable for deep-water applications in tropical climate zone locations. The purpose of an AOPS is to reduce the cost, complexity, and carbon-intensity of offshore activities by replacing topside vessels and power and data umbilicals. An AOPS can also enable provision of new hardware and services not techno-economically possible before. The paper will highlight the various AOPS technologies under development, the variety of use cases and applications an AOPS is suited for, and how an AOPS can reduce the cost, complexity, and carbon-intensity of deep-water operations in the Brazilian oil and gas sector.

Either a conventional motor starting system or a static starting system can be used to accelerate a large gas turbine from standstill to self-sustaining speed. In the motor-starting configuration, the gas turbine rotor is accelerated by a cranking electromotor. In a static starting configuration, a current with a variable frequency is supplied to the generator stator. The synchronous generator then operates — during the start-up — as a synchronous motor, accelerating the gas turbine rotor. The static starting system has a “soft start” capability, i.e., the power required for start-up increases gradually, without surging. This paper outlines the operating principle of the static starting method. A comparative analysis of the reliability and availability of the conventional motor starting and static starting configurations is presented.

Abstract Since the Fukushima accident, with the higher safety requirements of nuclear facilities in Japan, suppliers, manufacturers and academic societies have been actively considering the reconstruction of the safety of nuclear facilities from various perspectives. The Nuclear Regulation Authority has formulated new regulatory standards and is in operation. The new regulatory standards are based on defense in depth, and have significantly raised the levels of natural hazards and have requested to strengthen the countermeasures from the perspective of preventing the simultaneous loss of safety functions due to common factors. Facilities for dealing with specific serious accidents are required to have robustness to ensure functions against earthquakes that exceed the design standards to a certain extent. In addition, since the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) and the safety margin evaluation are performed to include the range beyond the design assumption in the safety improvement evaluation, it is very important to extent the special knowledge in the strength of important equipment for seismic safety. This paper summarizes the research and examination results of specialized knowledge on the concept of maintaining the functions of important seismic facilities and the damage index to be considered by severe earthquakes. In the other paper, the study on reliability of seismic capacity analysis for important equipment in nuclear facilities will be reported.

Milk spoilage is a common issue in remote dairy farms due to the unavailability of power grid. Many farmers rely on diesel engines to power their milk chillers. A sustainable approach is to replace the environmentally harmful diesel generators with solar powered chillers. Solar energy is attractive in such application because the peak cooling demand occurs at the peak solar irradiance. Solar energy can be converted to cooling through PV powered chiller or through thermally driven chillers. This concept was applied to a Modular Solar Bulk Milk Chiller (MilkPod™) which uses the solar energy to generate electricity in 6 kWp PV panels. The system cools 600 liters of milk per day as well as produces hot water for cleaning the milk tank. A detailed model was used in the design process and the system equipment were selected such that the system uses about 98% of its energy from the sun throughout the year. The effect of the solar energy utilization ratio, equipment supplied current as well as milk loading were investigated on the system performance.

While turbine engine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) accumulated significant experience in the application of probabilistic methods (PM) and uncertainty quantification (UQ) methods to specific technical disciplines and engine components, experience with system-level PM applications has been limited. To demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of an integrated PM-based system, a numerical case study has been developed around the Honeywell turbine engine application. The case study uses experimental observations of engine performance such as horsepower and fuel flow from a population of engines. Due to manufacturing variability, there are unit-to-unit and supplier-to-supplier variations in compressor blade geometry. Blade inspection data are available for the characterization of these geometric variations, and CFD analysis can be linked to the engine performance model, so that the effect of blade geometry variation on system-level performance characteristics can be quantified. Other elements of the case study included the use of engine performance and blade geometry data to perform Bayesian updating of the model inputs, such as efficiency adders and turbine tip clearances. A probabilistic engine performance model was developed, system-level sensitivity analysis performed, and the predicted distribution of engine performance metrics was calibrated against the observed distributions. This paper describes the model development approach and key simulation results. The benefits of using PM and UQ methods in the system-level framework are discussed. This case study was developed under Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) funding which is gratefully acknowledged.

A water-to-air heat pump that allows comfort cooling and heating from a single source is used as an experiment and will be incorporated in a Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Course. Presently, the source is the city water. Plans are in place to use a ground source that provides a relatively constant temperature water supply, as low as 45°F. This well-instrumented laboratory teaching equipment allows students to measure temperatures, pressures, flow rate, and power input and then calculate the coefficient of performance of the system and the efficiency of the compressor both manually and automatically. A self-contained Windows-based data collection and analysis system has been developed for automating all the manual functions of a WPH-J Series Water-to-Air Heat Pump from Heat Controller, Inc. This system uses a data acquisition board to read the voltage signals corresponding to 9 T-type thermocouples, three pressure gauges, and compressor supplied power. The data acquisition and control software written in Visual Basic 6 uses 32-bit libraries to control the operation mode, read the thermocouples’ voltages, water flow rate, compressor’s input and output pressure, and supplied power.

This paper describes the general practice and lessons learned from Commercial-Grade Item dedication for nuclear safety-related system applications in Taiwan. The dedication process qualified the commercial off-the-shelf components to be applied as basic components. In past fifteen years, Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) has actively performed the dedication service to help local nuclear power plants solve their procurement problems of nuclear grade items, due to reduced availability of qualified suppliers and/or obsolete issues of qualified components. The Scope of dedication includes material, electrical and mechanical components located in mild and harsh environment. Thousands of components such as piping, fitting, breaker, relay, motor, and control device etc., have already been dedicated to and successfully used in local nuclear power plants. The Commercial-Grade Item dedication process is based on EPRI documentations. Besides, the technical evaluation and equipment qualification are included during the dedication process. The requirements for equipment qualification are described in IEEE standards. Although the codes and standards for dedication in Taiwan refer to those in USA, the challenges may happen due to different regulators, utility, manufacture’s quality culture, and personal responsibility. The key to successful dedication will be dependent on the well-defined component requirements and good project planning. This paper introduces the self-reliant experiences in dedication and economic benefit to local nuclear power plants.
