It would be a truism among Anglo-Saxonists to say that we depend for our knowledge of a fair proportion of pre-Conquest literary and historical texts on the labours of scholars active in the sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Among the many important texts which were casualties, for example, of the Cotton fire on 23 October 1731, and for which we now depend on early modern transcripts and printed editions, one thinks immediately of Asser's Life of King Alfred and of the poem on the battle of Maldon (in Cotton Otho A. xii), of manuscript G of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle (in Cotton Otho B. xi), and of Ealdorman Æthelweard's Chronicle (in Cotton Otho A. x). Should one choose to venture into the realm of Anglo-Saxon charters, the importance of antiquarian transcripts of manuscripts now lost becomes ever more apparent. The most spectacular addition to the corpus of charters made since the publication of Professor Sawyer's catalogue in 1968 arose from the examination of a sixteenth-century cartulary of Ilford Hospital preserved at Hatfield House, which proved to contain the texts of eleven pre-Conquest charters derived ultimately from the archives of Barking abbey in Essex; of course this manuscript is an ‘original’ cartulary, as opposed to an antiquarian transcript, but it serves here as a salutary reminder of the treasures which may lurk as yet unidentified in libraries and archives throughout the country. Other ‘discoveries’ include a seventeenth-century copy of a charter by which King Edgar granted an estate at Ballidon, in Derbyshire, to his thegn Æthelferth, Sir Henry Spelman's extracts from a lost cartulary of Abbotsbury abbey, and notes made by the jurist John Selden from a charter-roll formerly preserved in the archives of St Paul's Cathedral in London.

ZusammenfassungDie Hymenopterengiftallergie ist der häufigste Auslöser anaphylaktischer Reaktionen bei Erwachsenen und der zweithäufigste Auslöser bei Kindern nach den Nahrungsmitteln. In West- und Mitteleuropa sind Stiche der Faltenwespenarten Vespula vulgaris und Vespula germanica sowie der Honigbiene Apis mellifera die Hauptauslöser von Anaphylaxien. In Südeuropa, den USA sowie in tropischen und subtropischen Gebieten (v. a. Südamerika) sind Feldwespenarten (Polistes spp.) weit verbreitet und spielen dort als Auslöser von Stichanaphylaxien eine bedeutende Rolle.Dargestellt wird der außergewöhnliche Fall einer primären Feldwespengiftallergie bei einem 65-jährigen Patienten aus dem Rheingau. Da die Feldwespengift-Immuntherapie in Deutschland keine Zulassung hat, konnte diese unserem Patienten als kausale Therapie nicht angeboten werden. Durch die klimatischen Veränderungen könnte die Feldwespengiftallergie sowohl aktuell als auch zukünftig in Nord- und Westeuropa eine wichtige Rolle einnehmen.

Introduction: Selenium is a trace element whose importance for the functioning of the organism in health and disease is very intensively studied in modern research. This scientific evidence is constantly being supplemented, which requires monitoring and evaluation. Aim: The aim of this review paper is to systematize the results of relevant scientific research on the role of selenium in health preservation and promotion and the prevention of disease. Method: Available literature in English from the PubMed database was searched using the keywords "selenium"; "health"; "disease"; "toxicity"; "food"; "deficiency"; "cancer" and "diabetes mellitus". Results: Selenium is a microelement that manifests a powerful antioxidant effect within the enzyme phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase, while as a part of the enzyme deiodinase plays a role in the transformation of thyroxine into triiodothyronine. Brazilian nut is a food with an extremely high concentration of selenium, followed by tuna and oysters. Selenium deficiency in the body manifests as cardiomyopathy (Keshan disease) or osteoarthritis (Kashin-Beck's disease). Selenium poisoning is characterized by gastrointestinal and neurological symptoms, changes in the skin, on nails and garlic breath. Although a negative correlation has been observed between selenium concentration and the risk of carcinoma (breast, prostate, cervical, liver, gastric, thyroid, colorectal and bladder), studies have not shown so far a significant effect of selenium nutritional intake or supplementation in the prevention of cancer. Selenium concentrations are significantly lower in hepatitis, cirrhosis of the liver, obesity, autoimmune diseases (Hashimoto's disease, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerous colitis, Crohn's disease), AIDS, and COVID-19, compared to healthy people. On the other hand, excessive selenium intake can increase the risk of diabetes mellitus type 2. Conclusion: Selenium has a significant physiological role in preserving health, primarily as an antioxidant and in the functioning of the thyroid gland, while selenium deficiency can be manifested by cardiomyopathy and osteoarthritis. Low concentrations of selenium in the body may increase the risk of several diseases: cancer, autoimmune diseases, AIDS and COVID-19. On the other hand, excessively high doses of selenium may increase the risk of diabetes mellitus or even poisoning - selenosis.

ZusammenfassungDie ernsthafte, evidenzbasierte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Prozess des Alterns und dem Bemühen, zielgerichtet auf pathophysiologische Verläufe therapeutisch einzuwirken, wird heute vielfach mit der Veröffentlichung von López-Otín et al. aus dem Jahr 2013 3 in Zusammenhang gebracht. Bei den dort beschriebenen 9 Kennzeichen des Alterns spielt Selen eine bes. wichtige Rolle. Das essenzielle Spurenelement kann z. B. auf die Telomerlänge, die mitochondriale Dysfunktion und die Immunseneszenz einwirken. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist eine ausreichend hohe Versorgung mit Selen in der geeigneten chemischen Form für die Bekämpfung des „Inflammaging“, das wichtig für Alterungsprozesse ist. Selen erfüllt somit die Anforderungen an eine rationale Anti-Aging-Medizin sowohl in Bezug auf seine biochemischen Wirkmechanismen als auch im Hinblick auf die Arzneimittelsicherheit.

Während bei behandelten HIV-Infizierten opportunistische Erkrankungen nur noch selten gesehen werden, rücken altersbezogene Komorbiditäten mit vorzeitigem Auftreten in den Vordergrund. Als Ursache werden die HIV-Infektion selber, Nebenwirkungen der antiretroviralen Therapie, Begleiterkrankungen (z. B. chronische Hepatitis C Virus-Infektion) und erhöhte Prävalenz traditioneller Risikofaktoren (wie Nikotinkonsum) diskutiert. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review Advertising in a Free Society – a defence of the advertising industry – by Ralph Harris and Arthur Seldon, and to evaluate its status as a justifiable forgotten classic of the marketing literature. Design/Methodology/Approach – Advertising in a Free Society is placed in historical context (the Cold War), summarised and reviewed. Findings – During the 1950s, as the UK experienced a period of affluence and growing consumerism, the advertising industry was again subject to the criticisms that had been levelled at it by influential scholars in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Against this context, Advertising in a Free Society deserves to be remembered as one of the earliest defences of advertising and remains highly relevant. Harris and Seldon were leading figures in the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), joining shortly after its inception, which became an influential group both in the UK and abroad, influencing policy on free markets. Originality/Value – Although Advertising in a Free Society attracted few citations (going out of print between its publication in 1959 and 2014 when it was republished by the IEA), and largely forgotten by marketing scholars, it provides a significant source for marketing historians interested in advertising criticism, the growth of the British advertising industry and the role of advertising in democratic societies. A reanalysis of the text situated in its historical context – the height of the Cold War – reveals that the text can be viewed as an artefact of the conflict, deploying the rhetoric of the period in defending the advertising industry and highlighting the positive role that advertising could make in free societies.

Effects of antibiotics usage in aquaculture on environment and human health has prompted the search for alternative products. Recently, the microelements in organic form have been used as alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture. Se is one of the microelements that have received heightened attention. This report reviews the role of Se in the culture of fishes (cobia Rachycentron canadum L., red sea bream Pagrus major, fingerling channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus, seabass Lates calcarifer, snubnose dart Trachinotus blochii, rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, common carp Cyprinus carpio L., Atlantic salmon parr Salmo salar, nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, african catfish Clarias gariepinus, Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis, grouper Epinephelus malabaricus, gilthead seabream Sparus aurata, Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, fathead minnow Pimephales promelas, striped bass Morone saxatilis, bluegill Lepomis macrochirus, crucian carp Carassius auratus gibelio) and crustacean (giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii, white shrimp Penaeus vannamei, marron Cherax cainii, crayfish Procambarus clarkii). Despite its emphasis on relationships between buyers and sellers, and the effect of emotion on behaviours, marketing literature has not yet investigated customer gratitude as an element of relational exchange. Gratitude is a significant component of personal relationships and may offer important insights into how perceptions of relationship marketing investments impact customer trust in, satisfaction with and affective commitment to a seller. In addition, customer gratitude may provide a more complete explanation of how marketing investments work. Consequently, this research contributes to marketing literature by investigating customer gratitude as a mediating mechanism in the relationship between customer perceptions of relationship marketing investments and customer trust in, satisfaction with and affective commitment to the seller: all dimensions of relationship quality.

Das Selenoprotein Glutathionperoxidase 2 (GPx2) ist ein epithelzellspezifisches, Hydroperoxide-reduzierendes Enzym, welches im Darmepithel, vor allem in den proliferierenden Zellen des Kryptengrundes, exprimiert wird. Die Aufrechterhaltung der GPx2-Expression im Kryptengrund auch bei subadäquatem Selenstatus könnte darauf hinweisen, dass sie hier besonders wichtige Funktionen wahrnimmt. Tatsächlich weisen GPx2 knockout (KO)-Mäuse eine erhöhte Apoptoserate im Kryptengrund auf. Ein Ziel dieser Arbeit war es deshalb, die physiologische Funktion der GPx2 näher zu untersuchen.
In Kryptengrundepithelzellen aus dem Colon selenarmer GPx2 KO-Mäuse wurde eine erhöhte Caspase 3/7-Aktivität im Vergleich zum Wildtyp (WT) festgestellt. Zudem wiesen diese Zellen eine erhöhte Suszeptibilität für oxidativen Stress auf. Die GPx2 gewährleistet also den Schutz der proliferierenden Zellen des Kryptengrundes auch bei subadäquater Selenversorgung. Des Weiteren wurde im Colon selenarmer (-Se) und -adäquater (+Se) GPx2 KO-Mäuse im Vergleich zum WT eine erhöhte Tumornekrosefaktor α-Expression und eine erhöhte Infiltration von Makrophagen festgestellt. Durch Fütterung einer selensupplementierten Diät (++Se) konnte dies verhindert werden. In GPx2 KO-Mäusen liegt demnach bereits basal eine niedriggradige Entzündung vor. Dies unterstreicht, dass GPx2 vor allem eine wichtige antiinflammatorische Funktion im Darmepithel besitzt.
Dem Mikronährstoff Selen werden protektive Funktionen in der Colonkanzerogenese zugeschrieben. In einem Mausmodell der Colitis-assoziierten Colonkanzerogenese wirkte GPx2 antiinflammatorisch und hemmte so die Tumorentstehung. Auf der anderen Seite wurden jedoch auch prokanzerogene Eigenschaften der GPx2 aufgedeckt. Deshalb sollte in dieser Arbeit untersucht werden, welchen Effekt ein GPx2 knockout in einem Modell der sporadischen, durch Azoxymethan (AOM) induzierten, Colonkanzerogenese hat.
Im WT kam es in präneoplastischen Läsionen häufig zu einer erhöhten GPx2-Expression im Vergleich zur normalen Darmmucosa. Eine derartige Steigerung der GPx2-Expression wurde auch in der humanen Colonkanzerogenese beschrieben. Das Fehlen der GPx2 resultierte in einer verminderten Entstehung von Tumoren (-Se und ++Se) und präneoplastischen Läsionen (-Se und +Se). Somit förderte GPx2 die Tumorentstehung im AOM-Modell. Acht Stunden nach AOM-Gabe war im GPx2 KO-Colon im Vergleich zum WT eine erhöhte Apoptoserate in der Kryptenmitte (-Se, +Se), nicht jedoch im Kryptengrund oder in der ++Se-Gruppe zu beobachten. Möglicherweise wirkte GPx2 prokanzerogen, indem sie die effiziente Elimination geschädigter Zellen in der Tumorinitiationsphase verhinderte. Eine ähnliche Wirkung wäre auch durch die erhöhte GPx2-Expression in der Promotionsphase denkbar. So könnte GPx2 proliferierende präneoplastische Zellen vor oxidativem Stress, Apoptosen, oder auch der Antitumorimmunität schützen. Dies könnte durch ein Zusammenwirken mit anderen Selenoproteinen wie GPx1 und Thioredoxinreduktasen, für die ebenfalls auch prokanzerogene Funktionen beschrieben wurden, verstärkt werden. Eine wichtige Rolle könnte hier die Modulation des Redoxstatus in Tumorzellen spielen.
Die Variation des Selengehalts der Diät hatte im WT einen eher U-förmigen Effekt. So traten in der –Se und ++Se-Gruppe tendenziell mehr und größere Tumore auf, als in der +Se Gruppe.
Zusammenfassend schützt GPx2 also die proliferierenden Zellen des Kryptengrundes. Sie könnte jedoch auch proliferierende transformierte Zellen schützen und so die sporadische, AOM-induzierte Colonkanzerogenese fördern. In einem Modell der Colitis-assoziierten Colonkanzerogenese hatte GPx2 auf Grund ihrer antiinflammatorischen Wirkung einen gegenteiligen Effekt und hemmte die Tumorentstehung. Die Rolle der GPx2 in der Colonkanzerogenese ist also abhängig vom zugrunde liegenden Mechanismus und wird maßgeblich von der Beteiligung einer Entzündung bestimmt.The selenoprotein glutathione peroxidase 2 (GPx2) is a hydroperoxide-reducing enzyme that is mainly expressed in the gastrointestinal epithelium, especially in the crypt base were the proliferating cells reside. GPx2 expression is maintained even when the selenium supply is limited, which indicates that GPx2 might have an important function in these cells. Indeed, GPx2 knockout (KO)-mice have an enhanced rate of apoptosis in the crypt base. Therefore one aim of this study was to further elucidate the physiological function of the GPx2. Isolated colonic crypt base epithelial cells of selenium deficient GPx2 KO-mice were found to have a higher caspase 3/7 activity than wild type (wt) cells. Moreover they exhibited an enhanced susceptibility for oxidative stress. Thus GPx2 protects the proliferative crypt base cells of the intestine, especially when the selenium supply is limited. Additionally an enhanced expression of tumor necrosis factor α and an enhanced infiltration of macrophages were detected in the colon of GPx2 KO-mice in comparison to the wt. These effects were observed on a selenium deficient (-Se) and -adequate (+Se) diet, but could be prevented by feeding a selenium supplemented (++Se) diet. Accordingly, GPx2 KO-mice have a basal low grade inflammation. This underlines, that GPx2 has an important anti-inflammatory function in the intestinal epithelium. Selenium deficiency is linked to an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. In a mouse model of colitis-associated colon carcinogenesis, GPx2 had anti-inflammatory and thus anticarcinogenic effects. However, also procarcinogenic functions of the GPx2 have been observed. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse the role of GPx2 in a model of non-inflammation triggered, sporadic colon carcinogenesis induced by azoxymethane (AOM). In preneoplastic lesions of wt mice, an enhanced expression of GPx2 in comparison to the normal mucosa was frequently observed. An upregulation of GPx2 expression has also been described in human colon carcinogenesis. GPx2 KO mice had less tumors (-Se and ++Se) and less preneoplastic lesions (-Se, +Se) than wt mice. Accordingly GPx2 promotes colon carcinogenesis in the AOM-model. Eight hours after AOM-application, a higher rate of apoptosis was observed in the mid-crypt region of the colon of GPx2 ko mice in comparison to wt mice in the –Se and +Se groups, but not in the ++Se group or in the crypt base. Thus GPx2 might act procarcinogenic by preventing the elimination of cells with DNA-damage in the tumor initiation stage. Similarly, the enhanced GPx2-expression in preneoplastic cells could promote tumorigenesis by protecting these cells from oxidative stress, apoptosis or antitumor immunity. This effect might be enhanced by other selenoproteins like GPx1 or thioredoxin reductases that have also been reported to possess procarcinogenic properties and it might be closely related to the regulation of the redox state of tumor cells. In wt mice, the selenium content of the diet turned out to have a rather U-shaped effect on colon carcinogenesis. In the –Se and ++Se groups, wt mice tended to have more and larger tumors than in the ++Se group. In conclusion, GPx2 protects the proliferating cells of the intestinal crypt base, but it could also protect proliferating transformed cells and thus promote sporadic, AOM-induced colon carcinogenesis. In contrast, GPx2 acted anticarcinogenic in a model of colitis-associated colon carcinogenesis due to its antiinflammatory properties. Thus, the role of GPx2 in colon carcinogenesis depends on the underlying mechanisms, especially on the involvement of an inflammation.

Thereupon, this dissertation was rooted in the self literature, as self perceptions such as identity and possible selves may be particularly relevant for understanding physical activity in retired individuals. As a result, the first aim of this dissertation sought to confirm, in a preliminary study (Study 1), the relationship between possible selves, physical activity identity and physical activity in retirees. Through questionnaire data collected concurrently, Study 1 showed that identity and possible selves were related to physical activity (Article 1). Moreover, positive associations were found between possible selves focused on physical activity and physical activity identity. Subsequently, the relationships between these variables were further probed to determine whether exercise identity mediated the relationship between physical activity possible selves and physical activity (Article 2). Questionnaire data collected across three time points (one month apart) showed that identity mediated the relationship between possible selves and behaviour - all related to physical activity. Together, these findings represented an important first step toward designing a relevant intervention for retirees which informed the second aim of this dissertation (Study 2). A possible selves intervention designed to increase physical activity identity and physical activity was tested (Article 3). Changes in these variables were compared across three groups of an experimental design: a repeated possible selves intervention, a one-time possible selves intervention, and a control group. All groups reported marginally higher levels of physical activity and physical activity identity, inconsequential to group assignment. Overall, the present dissertation makes contributions to the self literature especially with regards to new retirees. Nevertheless, limitations are acknowledged and discussed. Finally, future research avenues are presented.

Der erste Aufsatz untersucht, ob sich verschiedene Leerverkäufer bei ihrer Auswahl von Zielunternehmen anhand von sichtbaren Merkmalen unterscheiden. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Hedgefonds und Investmentmanager im Durchschnitt größere und jüngere Unternehmen bevorzugen, während sich Banken auf Unternehmen mit weniger Restatements der Finanzdaten und einem höheren Verschuldungsgrad konzentrieren. Der zweite Aufsatz beschreibt, wie Unternehmen auf aktivistische Leerverkäuferberichte reagieren. Es wird festgestellt, dass die Antwortrate erheblich steigt, wenn der Bericht von deutlich negativen abnormalen Renditen begleitet wird und wenn die Leerverkäufer neue Beweise vorlegen. Dies stimmt mit der Vorstellung überein, dass Leerverkäufer als Informationsintermediäre fungieren können. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass diese zusätzlichen Aufseher die Transparenz und das Berichtsverhalten der Banken bei der Finanzberichterstattung beeinflussen können, insbesondere wenn die Berichterstattung über Kreditverluste und Anpassungen der Geschäftsberichte berücksichtigt werden.

The first essay investigates whether different short sellers vary in their selection of target firms using observable firm characteristics. Results show that hedge funds and investment managers on average prefer larger and younger firms, whereas banks focus on firms with fewer restatements and a higher leverage. The second essay provides descriptive evidence on how firms respond to activist short seller reports and how these responses are associated with outcomes for the targeted firms. It finds that the response rate increases substantially when the report is accompanied by significantly negative abnormal returns and when the short sellers provide new evidence which is consistent with the idea of short sellers acting as information intermediaries. Not responding is associated with a less negative stock price response when the report is released and fewer adverse outcomes. The third essay shifts the attention to Monitoring Trustees who assist in the supervision of banks that have received state aid in the European Union during the last financial crisis. It explores in a hand-collected sample the characteristics and duties of these newly implemented monitors and it studies the role of these supranational monitors and the banks’ reporting behavior. Results suggest that these additional supervisors can influence the banks financial reporting transparency and reporting behavior when mainly loan loss reporting and restatements are accounted for. L'objet de cette these est de cerner les effets differencies des pratiques educatives familiales sur le developpement de l'identite sexuee chez l'enfant. L'influence de l'implication parentale, mais aussi de la conformite aux roles de sexe et de la stereotypie du pere et de la mere est recherchee sur deux composantes de l'identite sexuee, concernant l'acquisition des roles de sexe chez l'enfant. Dans une perspective socio-cognitive, nous nous penchons sur l'identite sociale de sexe (apprehendee par la constance de genre, les connaissances des roles de sexe et la flexibilite du schema de genre) et sur l'image sexuee de soi (saisie par le choix des partenaires, les preferences d'activites et les comportements de jeu) de l'enfant prescolaire. Pour ce faire, nous avons interroge 23 enfants et leurs deux parents au travers de differents outils. Un questionnaire compose de 12 echelles d'attitudes, du bsri et du psai a permis de saisir le degre d'implication, de conformite et de stereotypie du pere et de la mere. Concernant l'enfant de 4 ans 9 mois (= 1 mois), nous avons adapte deux outils anglo-saxons: le serli et le ssm. Nous avons egalement fait une observation de type ethopsychologique des comportements de jeu de l'enfant face a des jouets stereotypes et contre-stereotypes. Contrairement aux hypotheses posees, la conformite et la stereotypie parentale permettent a l'enfant de se degager plus precocement des stereotypes de sexe. Hormis les effets de l'asymetrie sociale entre les deux groupes de sexes, nous relevons une relation entre pratiques educatives et identite sexuee qui nous parait etre celle d'un besoin de conformite chez l'enfant. Face au manque de clarte des reperes parentaux sur les differences entre les deux sexes, l'enfant construit ses propres normes de references concernant son appartenance sexueeThis work aims to understand the effects of family educational practices effects on the child's gender development. We study the influence of the parental involvement, the gender role conformity and the parental stereotypy on two components of gender role attainments. From a socio-cognitive point of view, we examine the gender social identity (apprehended by gender consistency, the knowledge of gender roles and gender schema flexibility) and the gender self concept (apprehended by the playmate preferences, the favourite activities and the playing behaviours) of the pre-school child. We have observed 23 children and their parents with several instruments. A questionnaire composed by 12 behaviours scales, the bsri and the psai have allowed us to reach the degree of involvement, conformity and stereotypy of the father and mother. Concerning the 57-months-old child, we have adapted two american instruments: the serli and the ssm. We have also made an ethopsychological observation of the playing behaviours of the child with stereotyped and cross-stereotyped toys. Contrary to our hypothesis, parental conformity and stereotypy help the child for early disengagement from gender stereotypes. We can observe the effects of social asymmetry between the two gender groups. But the relation between family educational practices and gender identity is also to be found in the child's need of conformity. When the parental landmarks of the gender differences are not clear, the child will construct his own reference norms about his belonging to a gender group

ZusammenfassungDer Beitrag stellt die Ergebnisse einer empirischen Studie an acht europäischen Hochschulen mit insgesamt 68 Interviews vor und geht der Frage nach dem Verhältnis der jeweiligen Digitalisierungsstrategie zwischen Hochschulleitung, Fakultätsleitung und Lehrenden nach. Es zeigt sich, dass die Entwicklung von Digitalisierungsstrategien durch die Coronapandemie einen Aufschwung erfahren hat. Die Lehrenden waren allerdings selten über Digitalisierungsstrategien informiert und der Fakultät war die Umsetzung der Digitalisierungsstrategien überlassen. Zur Erklärung dieses Phänomens eignet sich die Theorie lose gekoppelter Systeme von Karl E. Weick, die sich auf Hochschulen übertragen lässt.

We capture the different types of jealousy exemplifying socio-emotional behavior. A short overview of state-of-the-art modeling is presented to capture the social environment of actors or agents. The methodology for a deterministic approach for modeling jealousy is presented. In the deterministic spatial game, we investigate the conditions for a single defector to invade a population of cooperators. We investigate the impact on defectors when invaded by cooperators. Finally, we present our findings from respective experiments.

Natalie Berners Beitrag "'"Momification of Games'"- Repräsentation von Mutterschaft im Videospiel" untersucht, wie eine zentrale Identitätskategorie - Mütter - in Videospielen dargestellt werden. Ihr Beitrag Kapitel zeigt anhand einer kategoriengeleiteten Inhaltsanalyse von 15 Spielen, dass Mütter in Videospielen vor allem durch ihre Abwesenheit auffallen. Im Gegensatz zu Vätern, denen in den letzten Jahren in zentralen Spieltiteln eine Reihe neuer Rollen zugeschrieben wurden, bleiben Mütter hauptsächlich im Hintergrund, dienen vorwiegend als typisierte emotionale Trigger und spielen nur selten eine aktive Rolle. Berner verbindet in ihrer Arbeit Fokus auf spielerische Inhalte mit kritischen Fragen an den Produktionskontext, um so die Abwesenheit von Müttern mit Faktoren wie Spielerdemographien, fehlende Diversität in Teams von Entwicklerinnen sowie Profitinteressen der Spielindustrie zu erklären.

John Selden was a role model for John Milton, who called him “the chief of learned men reputed in this Land.” But one was primarily a scholar, the other a poet-polemicist, and although they both supported the reform of English family law and the parliamentary side in the civil war, their approaches differ. Milton was more impetuous and daring, Selden more circumspect, always adjusting his discourse to fit his audience, whether in Parliament, at table among friends, or in his scholarship. This introduces the important presence of Jewish law, ignored by editors, in Selden’s Table Talk, and it analyzes Selden’s use of rhetoric to prepare the readers of De Jure Naturali to acknowledge the validity of that law.

Two groups of factors impact the success of e-commerce transaction: environmental factors and content of the messages exchanged between the seller and the buyer. The first group includes factors describing the environment in which the seller-buyer relationship operates, such as IT infrastructure, Logistic Infrastructure, Financial Infrastructure, and Government regulations. Second group -- content of the message -- covers these elements of the message, which improve the trust between the two parties (especially the buyer’s trust). Among them, the statement about warranty plays critical role as the risk reducing information send by the seller. The two aspects of warranty message are considered: malfunctioning (the product does not operate as it is expected by the seller) and misinforming (the product does not operate as it is expected by the buyer).

Abstract Most lab-scale acidizing experiments are performed in core samples with 100% water saturation conditions and at pore pressures around 1100 psi. However, this is seldom the case on the field, where different saturation conditions exist with high temperature and pressure conditions. Carbon-di-Oxide (CO2), a by-product evolved during the acidizing process, is long thought to behave inertly during the acidizing process. Recent investigations reveal that the presence of CO2 dynamically changes the behavior of wormhole patterns and acid efficiency. A compositional simulation technique was adopted to understand the process thoroughly. A validated compositional numerical model capable of replicating acidizing experiments at the core-scale level, in fully aqueous environments described in published literature was utilized in this study. The numerical model was extended to a three-phase environment and applied at the field scale level to monitor and evaluate the impacts of evolved CO2 during the carbonate acidizing processes. Lessons learned from the lab-scale were tested at the field-scale scenario via a numerical model with radial coordinates. Contrary to popular belief, high pore pressures of 1,000 psi and above are not sufficient to keep all the evolved CO2 in solution. The presence of CO2 as a separate phase hinders acid efficiency. The reach or extent of the evolved CO2 is shown to exist only near the damage zone and seldom penetrates the reservoir matrix. Based on the field scale model's predictions, this study warrants conducting acidizing experiments at the laboratory level, at precisely similar pressure, temperature, and salinity conditions faced in the near-wellbore region, and urges the application of compositional modeling techniques to account for CO2 evolution, while studying and predicting matrix acidizing jobs.

The most important findings of the study centered on the effectiveness of small projects in the economic empowerment of Libyan women, as the small projects achieved for women in the study community a greater degree of freedom, self-fulfillment and self-confidence after their financial independence, also the small projects achieved for women on the study community a good standard of living for their selves and their families, those projects contributed to the employment of some women, and encouraging some women to set up their economic projects.

Abstract Floating Production Storage and Offloading Units (FPSOs) will continue to be in high demand because of their numerous advantages; such as, their ability to offer early production and operate in ultra-deep water locations, while remaining easy to relocate to meet changing needs. By design, slack cargo tanks are almost always present in FPSOs due to continuous loading and offloading operations; however, the presence of slack cargo impacts the seakeeping stability abilities of FPSOs. There are limited published experimental data on coupled sloshing with seakeeping of stationary vessels, and existing studies on this have focused on single row cargo tanks which is seldom the case in FPSOs. The aim of this paper is to study roll motion coupled with sloshing in partially-filled pair of two-row tanks of a stationary FPSO model exposed to regular beam waves. The model tests was performed in the Davidson Laboratory towing tank at Stevens Institute of Technology. The FPSO model response in roll was measured, and the time histories of sloshing oscillation were measured on the starboard and port side of one of the stern cargo tanks. The results show that varying internal cargo sloshing leads to unpredictable motion response of floating vessels that should be accounted for in the design and offloading operations of FPSO.

Der Schweizer Wald spielt für die Erhaltung der biologischen Vielfalt eine zentrale Rolle. Mehr als ein Drittel der bei uns vorkommenden Tiere und Pflanzen sind auf den Wald angewiesen. Die Ergebnisse des LFI4 zeigen, dass der Schweizer Wald ein relativ naturnahes Ökosystem ist. Die Baumarten- und die Strukturvielfalt haben weiter zugenommen, ebenso die dicken Bäume und besonders das Totholz, eine Lebensgrundlage für viele Waldarten. Im Gegensatz zum Mittelland sind die Wälder der Alpen und Alpensüdseite dichter geworden, was dort zur Folge haben kann, dass licht- und wärmeliebende Arten seltener werden. Auch sind viele Waldränder noch eintönig, auch wenn dort die Gehölzartenvielfalt und in geringerem Masse auch die Strukturvielfalt zugenommen haben. Zugenommen hat die Fläche der Waldreservate auf einen Anteil von 5,8 % der Schweizer Waldfläche nach LFI-Definition. Mächtige Bäume sind dort wie auch im übrigen Wald noch immer relativ selten.

Retail trade occupies an important part of the life of society because it is directly aimed at satisfying its needs as a consumer and is a source of material wealth for the seller. This sphere of activity is an independent branch of the national economy, which has emerged because of commodity exchange processes designed to meet the various needs of human society. Everyone of society, as a result of the implementation of exchange operations, has the opportunity to receive for the final individual use what he needs. The seller, in pursuit of his own benefit, relieves the manufacturer of the need to search for a buyer for his products. From this point of view, the role of retail trade in the reproduction cycle is extremely important, since, specializing in specific operations, this industry is not only an intermediary, but also a catalyst for mutually beneficial interaction of all participants in these relationships. Virtually everyone in both developed and developing countries is involved in retail operations on a daily basis.

The steady energy transfer equation by simultaneous conduction and radiation in an absorbing, emitting and non-scattering gray planar medium is studied theoretically. For extremely high-temperature applications, where radiative transfer plays an important role, ceramic-matrix composites, considered as semitransparent materials, are being explored for potential use in turbine and compressors components, spacecraft structures, engine control systems and nuclear reactors. Exact solution of the above mentioned radiative problems is seldom possible and large-time consuming numerical approximations are then used. A technique combining an accurate physical formulation, the two-flux model, coupled to a fast numerical procedure for the calculation of the temperature and heat fluxes is described.

One of the fundamental tenets of quantum mechanics is the existence of superposition states, or states whose properties simultaneously possess two or more distinct values. Although quantum superpositions and entanglements seldom appear outside of the microscopic quantum world, there is growing interest in the creation of “big” superpositions and massively entangled states for use in applications such as a quantum computer.1 We report first steps toward this goal by demonstrating a fondamental two-bit quantum logic gate and a “Schrödinger cat”-like state of motion with a single trapped beryllium atom. Both experiments allow sensitive measurements of decoherence mechanisms which will play an important role in the feasibility of quantum computation.

Members of different cultures vary in basic social psychological processes, such as value orientation, attitudes, attitude-behavior relations, person perception and attribution of observed behavior. Previous researchers have traced back these differences to the respective culture members’ self-construal: Westerners define their self primarily in independent terms, whereas Asians are more likely to define their selves in interdependent ways. This difference in construing the self in turn affects the above mentioned judgmental processes. However, when relying on cross-cultural studies alone, the critical role of the self cannot directly be tested. In this chapter I argue that the accessibility of either independent or interdependent self-knowledge plays a critical role, because judgments are assimilated to either autonomous –or social– contents to the degree that independent –or interdependent– self-knowledge is accessible in the judgmental situation. If so, making self-knowledge of one kind or the other temporarily accessible, should mirror cross-cultural differences. I will review a series of studies confirming this assumption. These studies will be discussed with regard to their implications a) for the role of the self in judgment formation and b) for the flexibility of cultural differences.

This paper studies the role of buyer market power in determining the response of international prices to exchange rate changes (i.e., exchange rate pass-through). Using a novel dataset of the universe of Colombian export transactions that links Colombian exporters (sellers) to their foreign importers (buyers), I document three facts: i) most Colombian exports are concentrated in a few foreign buyers in each market, ii) the same seller charges different prices to different buyers in the same product and destination, and iii) markets with a higher concentration of sales among buyers display lower exchange rate pass-through. Motivated by these stylized facts, I propose an open economy model of oligopsony, a market with large number of sellers and a few buyers, that accounts for buyer market power in international markets and its consequences for price determination in international transactions. The model shows that larger foreign buyers pay a marked-down price, i.e., a price below the marginal product value for the buyer. Most importantly, these markdowns are flexible and play a role when adjusting prices to exchange rate shocks. I derive a model-based equation relating pass-through to buyer size and estimate it on the micro transaction level data for Colombia. I find that after an exchange rate shock, sellers connected to larger buyers face more moderate changes in their prices in the seller currency (i.e., lower exchange rate pass-through) than those connected to small buyers. Pass-through ranges from 1% for firms connected with the largest buyers to 17% for firms connected with the smallest buyers. I use the estimates from the empirical analysis to calibrate the model and propose a counterfactual where buyer market power is eliminated. Under this scenario, sellers' revenues increase; however, the price in seller currency is more responsive to exchange rate shocks.

In Buy-It-Now auctions, sellers can post a take-it-or-leave-it price offer prior to an auction. While the literature almost exclusively looks at buyers in such combined mechanisms, the current paper summarizes results from the sellers’ point of view. Buy-It-Now auctions are complex mechanisms and therefore quite challenging for sellers. The paper discusses the seller’s curse, a bias that sellers might fall prey to in such combined mechanisms, and how experience counterbalances this bias. Furthermore, the paper explores the role of information and bargaining power on behavior and profit prospects in Buy-It-Now auctions.

The role of crustal lineaments in the development of the western margin of Laurentia, Selwyn basin and associated sediment-hosted Zn-Pb deposits (clastic-dominated, Mississippi-Valley-type) in Yukon and NWT, are reassessed through a new 3-D inversion strategy applied to new compilations of gravity and magnetic data. Regionally continuous, broadly NE-trending crustal lineaments including the Liard line, Fort Norman structure, and Leith Ridge fault, were interpreted as having had long-standing influence on craton, margin, and sedimentary basin development. However, multiple tectonic overprints including terrane accretion, thrust faulting, and plutonism obscure the region's history. The Liard line, related to a transfer fault that bounds the Macdonald Platform promontory, is refined from the integration of the new geophysical models with published geological data. The geophysical models support the continuity of the Fort Norman structure below the Selwyn basin, but the presence of Leith Ridge fault is not supported in this area. The ENE-trending Mackenzie River lineament, traced from the Misty Creek Embayment to Great Bear Lake, is interpreted to mark the southern edge of a cratonic promontory. The North American craton is bounded by a NW-trending lineament interpreted as a crustal manifestation of lithospheric thinning of the Laurentian margin, as echoed by a change in the depth of the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary. The structure is straddled by Mississippi Valley-type Zn-Pb occurrences, following their palinspastic restoration, and also defines the eastern limit of mid-Late Cretaceous granitic intrusions. Another NW-trending lineament, interpreted to be associated with a shallowing of lower crustal rocks, is coincident with clastic-dominated Zn-Pb occurrences.

We have seen drastic changes in the music profession during the last 20 years, and consequently an increase of new professional opportunities, roles and identities. We can see elements of a collective identity in classically trained musicians who from childhood have been introduced to centuries old, institutionalized traditions around the performers’ role and the work-concept. Respect for the composer and his work can lead to a fear of failure and a perfectionist value system that permeates the classical music. We have to question whether music education has become a ready-made prototype of certain trajectories, with a predictable outcome represented by more or less generic types of musicians who interchangeably are able play the same, limited canonized repertoire, in more or less the same way. Where is the resistance and obstacles, the detours and the unique and fearless individual choices? It is a paradox that within the traditional master-student model, the student is told how to think, play and relate to established truths, while a sustainable musical career is based upon questioning the very same things. A fundamental principle of an independent musical career is to develop a capacity for critical reflection and a healthy opposition towards uncontested truths. However, the unison demands for modernization of institutions and their role cannot be solved with a quick fix, we must look at who we are and who we have been to look at who we can become. Central here is the question of how the music students perceive their own identity and role. To make the leap from a traditional instrumentalist role to an artist /curator role requires commitment in an entirely different way. In this article, I will examine question of identity - how identity may be constituted through musical and educational experiences. The article will discuss why identity work is a key area in the development of a sustainable music career and it will investigate how we can approach this and suggest some possible ways in this work. We shall see how identity work can be about unfolding possible future selves (Marcus & Nurius, 1986), develop and evolve one’s own personal journey and narrative. Central is how identity develops linguistically by seeing other possibilities: "identity is formed out of the discourses - in the broadest sense - that are available to us ..." (Ruud, 2013). The question is: How can higher music education (HME) facilitate students in their identity work in the process of constructing their professional identities? I draw on my own experience as a classically educated musician in the discussion.

The aim of the project Reducing Inequality in Access to Higher Education1 was to raise the university application rate for upper secondary students whose parents did not them-selves have a university degree. The project implemented an information intervention, and his technical report outlines the procedures involved in designing that the interven-tion called NextStep 1.0. It includes the selection and recruitment of schools, as well as the development of a survey for both students and counsellors and the creation of role model videos which was implemented in the intervention. The project Reducing Inequality in Access to Higher Education also included a NextStep 2.0 and a nudge experiment, which are not included in this technical report. To smoothen the readability of the report, we call the project NextStep throughout this report. The NextStep study is funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark, Grant No. 8019-00100B in a project running from 2019 to 2024. The target group for the intervention was upper secondary students in the spring of 2020, when they were just three-five month from graduation. Turkey, Pakistan, India, Malaysia, and Indonesia span one of the longest continuously inhabited regions of the world. Centuries of cultural infusion have ensured these societies are highly heterogeneous. As plural polities, they are ripe for the kind of freedoms that liberal democracy can guarantee. However, despite having multi-party electoral systems, these countries have recently moved toward populist authoritarianism. Populism —once considered a distinctively Latin American problem that only seldom reared its head in other parts of the world— has now found a home in almost every corner of the planet. Moreover, it has latched on to religion, which, as history reminds us, has an unparalleled power to mobilize crowds. This report explores the unique nexus between faith and populism in our era and offers an insight into how cyberspace and offline politics have become highly intertwined to create a hyper-reality in which socio-political events are taking place. The report focuses, in particular, on the role of religious populism in digital space as a catalyst for undemocratic politics in the five Asian countries we have selected as our case studies. The focus on the West Asian and South Asian cases is an opportunity to examine authoritarian religious populists in power, whereas the East Asian countries showcase powerful authoritarian religious populist forces outside parliament. This report compares internet governance in each of these countries under three categories: obstacles to access, limits on content, and violations of user rights. These are the digital toolkits that authorities use to govern digital space. Our case selection and research focus have allowed us to undertake a comparative analysis of different types of online restrictions in these countries that constrain space foropposition and democratic voices while simultaneously making room for authoritarian religious populist narratives to arise and flourish. The report finds that surveillance, censorship, disinformation campaigns, internet shutdowns, and cyber-attacks—along with targeted arrests and violence spreading from digital space—are common features of digital authoritarianism. In each case, it is also found that religious populist forces co-opt political actors in their control of cyberspace. The situational analysis from five countries indicates that religion’s role in digital authoritarianism is quite evident, adding to the layer of nationalism. Most of the leaders in power use religious justifications for curbs on the internet. Religious leaders support these laws as a means to restrict “moral ills” such as blasphemy, pornography, and the like. This evident “religious populism” seems to be a major driver of policy changes that are limiting civil liberties in the name of “the people.” In the end, the reasons for restricting digital space are not purely religious but draw on religious themes with populist language in a mixed and hybrid fashion. Some common themes found in all the case studies shed light on the role of digital space in shaping politics and society offline and vice versa. The key findings of our survey are as follows: The future of (especially) fragile democracies is highly intertwined with digital space. There is an undeniable nexus between faith and populism which offers an insight into how cyberspace and politics offline have become highly intertwined. Background to the topic: Early tomato fruit development is executed via extensive cell divisions followed by cell expansion concomitantly with endoreduplication. The signals involved in activating the different modes of growth during fruit development are still inadequately understood. Addressing this developmental process, we identified SlFSM1 as a gene expressed specifically during the cell-division dependent stages of fruit development. SlFSM1 is the founder of a class of small plant specific proteins containing a divergent SANT/MYB domain (Barg et al 2005). Before initiating this project, we found that low ectopic over-expression (OEX) of SlFSM1 leads to a significant decrease in the final size of the cells in mature leaves and fruits, and the outer pericarp is substantially narrower, suggesting a role in determining cell size and shape. We also found the interacting partners of the Arabidopsis homologs of FSM1 (two, belonging to the same family), and cloned their tomato single homolog, which we named SlFSB1 (Fruit SANT/MYB–Binding1). SlFSB1 is a novel plant specific single MYB-like protein, which function was unknown. The present project aimed at elucidating the function and mode of action of these two single MYB proteins in regulating tomato fruit development. The specific objectives were: 1. Functional analysis of SlFSM1 and its interacting protein SlFSB1 in relation to fruit development. 2. Identification of the SlFSM1 and/or SlFSB1 cellular targets. The plan of work included: 1) Detailed phenotypic, histological and cellular analyses of plants ectopically expressing FSM1, and plants either ectopically over-expressing or silenced for FSB1. 2) Extensive SELEX analysis, which did not reveal any specific DNA target of SlFSM1 binding, hence the originally offered ChIP analysis was omitted. 3) Genome-wide transcriptional impact of gain- and loss- of SlFSM1 and SlFSB1 function by Affymetrix microarray analyses. This part is still in progress and therefore results are not reported, 4) Search for additional candidate partners of SlFSB1 revealed SlMYBI to be an alternative partner of FSB1, and 5) Study of the physical basis of the interaction between SlFSM1 and SlFSB1 and between FSB1 and MYBI. Major conclusions, solutions, achievements: We established that FSM1 negatively affects cell expansion, particularly of those cells with the highest potential to expand, such as the ones residing inner to the vascular bundles in the fruit pericarp. On the other hand, FSB1 which is expressed throughout fruit development acts as a positive regulator of cell expansion. It was also established that besides interacting with FSM1, FSB1 interacts also with the transcription factor MYBI, and that the formation of the FSB1-MYBI complex is competed by FSM1, which recognizes in FSB1 the same region as MYBI does. Based on these findings a model was developed explaining the role of this novel network of the three different MYB containing proteins FSM1/FSB1/MYBI in the control of tomato cell expansion, particularly during fruit development. In short, during early stages of fruit development (Phase II), the formation of the FSM1-FSB1 complex serves to restrict the expansion of the cells with the greatest expansion potential, those non-dividing cells residing in the inner mesocarp layers of the pericarp. Alternatively, during growth phase III, after transcription of FSM1 sharply declines, FSB1, possibly through complexing with the transcription factor MYBI serves as a positive regulator of the differential cell expansion which drives fruit enlargement during this phase. Additionally, a novel mechanism was revealed by which competing MYB-MYB interactions could participate in the control of gene expression. Implications, both scientific and agricultural: The demonstrated role of the FSM1/FSB1/MYBI complex in controlling differential cell growth in the developing tomato fruit highlights potential exploitations of these genes for improving fruit quality characteristics. Modulation of expression of these genes or their paralogs in other organs could serve to modify leaf and canopy architecture in various crops.

It focuses on nonfinancial issues which have seldom been addressed systematically in the debate on the constraints hindering SMEs.
