Streszczenie:

El perfume y los olores tienen una especial relevancia en la novela Ifigenia (1924) de Teresa de la Parra. Este sutil elemento revela secretos de la sociedad desde el punto de vista sociológico, cultural, antropológico y comunica un mensaje. Se hará un breve recorrido por la historia del perfume. Desde esa base se hará una aproximación a la olfacción en la novela Ifigenia, donde el perfume y los olores aportan matices a la identidad de los personajes principales, develando secretos del alma de la casa criolla. Se utilizará la metodología interpretativa para analizar la relevancia del perfume en la obra y demostrar cómo la autora se vale de la olfacción para la construcción del sentido de la novela, descifrando un código para transmitir un mensaje. Nos serviremos de algunos teóricos de la olfacción, el perfume, el cuerpo y la identidad, entre ellos: Vroon, Corbin, Freud, Squicciarino, Foucault, Sáez, Mattalía, Torras.

El acoso, interpretado aquí como novela corta, queda luego brevemente comparado con otras obras carpenterianas, cuento y novela, para ver qué solidez tienen los límites dibujados a base de las ideas de Piglia, con algún que otro suplemento derivado de la contrastación de las tesis con la obra literaria.

Este artículo propone analizar la novela negra de Benjamin Black, Christine Falls, a partir de los espacios cerrados que se describen a lo largo de la historia. Lo anterior se hace para demostrar que en estos lugares se esconde la corrupción de la élite dublinesa y una vez que el detective (Quirke) logra entrar en ellos, los secretos se revelan. Para lo anterior, se utilizan conceptos de teoría sobre el espacio narrativo y de la perspectiva de los personajes; además de teoría de la ficción detectivesca, ya que contribuyen a la creación del ambiente característico de la novela noir. Así pues, después de establecer las bases teóricas del análisis, se examinan distintos pasajes de la novela (focalizados en varios de los personajes que desempeñan un rol importante en la trama) que son claves para que el detective resuelva el caso. También se estudian algunas condiciones sociohistóricas de los años cincuenta en Irlanda, ya que éstas ayudan a explicar las acciones y percepciones de varios de los personajes de la novela. Por último, se reflexiona sobre la importancia del género detectivesco, particularmente el de la novela negra, como herramienta de crítica social, ya que expone y cuestiona a las esferas de poder que constantemente tratan de silenciar a grupos vulnerables de la urbe.

Este trabajo profundiza en el carácter metaficcional de los manuscritos de Melquíades, con el objetivo de explicar en qué consiste exactamente el juego de semejanzas y diferencias entre la novela y el texto que la dobla a manera de relato especular. Partiendo de su conocida hipótesis sobre el origen judío de los Buendía, la autora de este trabajo defiende, con argumentos teóricos y comparatistas, que el espectacular final de la novela, en el que Aureliano Babilonia descubre las claves de Melquíades y accede así al enigma contenido en los manuscritos, no sería sino una prefiguración del acto de lecturainterpretación requerido por la propia novela, ella misma concebida y ejecutada a manera de texto enigmático y descifrable. Polemizando tácitamente con las más recientes teorías de la interpretación, el escritor habría creado así la inusual imagen de un texto que, lejos de estar destinado a la interpretación infinita, brindaría al lector la posibilidad de descubrir y revelar sus más cruciales secretos.

En el presente artículo se hace un seguimiento a la novela “Jamil” que aparece en Tríptico de mar y tierra(1993) y a la vida empantanada por la errancia, la pérdida y el fracaso de Maqroll el Gaviero, personaje memorable de la poética mutisiana, en una de sus últimas aventuras como marinero en tierra firme. Las empresas que asume Maqroll son parte de su vida, de su presente en la tierra firme que ha adoptado como hogar y han dejado una huella indeleble en lo más profundo de su existencia. Pero, ¿qué sucede cuando los senderos del infortunio se ven atenazados por la renuncia a esa vida vagabunda llena de secretos dolores que se comunican solamente a la soledad? Novela del regreso a Guadalupe de Maryse Condé, Traversée de la Mangrove traza los rasgos de una aldea aislada perturbada por la muerte de Francis Sancher, un extranjero venido de un lugar indefinido, que reúne la población en un velatorio donde los asistentes dejan vagar sus pensamientos, revelan secretos, se cuestionan sobre su vida y, poco a poco, desvelan los misterios del difunto. A partir de esa polifonía, donde aparece la influencia de Faulkner y una intertextualidad caribeña, Maryse Condé establece una reflexión sobre la identidad antillana y las diversas corrientes que han recorrido su literatura (Negridud, Antillanidad, Creolidad). Afirma así su independencia, su desapego frente a las teorías, para concentrarse en lo humano. Capta así el carácter específico de su isla, compuesta e hibrida, modernizando el concepto de rizoma defendido por Glissant, con una lengua francesa que dice haber “canibalizado” para expresar las contradicciones, las errancias y los errores de una tierra enfrentada a lo desconocido y ávida de ideales. A novel about Maryse Condé's return to Guadeloupe, in which she paints thepicture of an isolated village disturbed by the death of Francis Sancher, an outsider coming from anundefined elsewhere, and who brings the population together in a funeral wake during which theparticipants let their thoughts wander, reveal secrets and question their own lives and gradually reveal the secrets of the deceased. El arte en general, y la novela en particular, permiten el estudio de la realidad social. Tras haber encontrado en varias novelas referencias a la contaduría pública, es posible señalar una interpretación específica de esta profesión desde la literatura. Para ello se analizan las alusiones a la contaduría aparecidas en las novelas Ilona llega con la lluvia de Álvaro Mutis, Los parientes de Ester de Luís Fayad, La pianista de Elfriede Jelinek, Desgracia y juventud de Jhon Maxwell Coetzee, Sin destino de Imre Kertész, El fuego secreto de Fernando Vallejo, El libro de un hombre solo de Gao Xingjian y El callejón de los milagros de Naguib Mahfouz. Las alusiones que se analizan aquí remiten a la idea de que existen prejuicios universales hacia la contaduría pública. La posibilidad de establecer una relación entre contabilidad y literatura permite proponer un método alternativo de análisis para los problemas específicos de la contaduría pública. Invitación.

The subject of the analysis is the types and factors of masculinity depicted in the novel "Our Secrets" by Yuri Smolych (1935). Masculinity in the research papers is interpreted from the standpoint of social constructivism. War, sport, and sexual experience are identified as factors determining the gender socialization of young men in the novel. Based on the analysis of Russian imperial masculinity, Ukrainian colonial masculinity, and the crisis of masculinity, the drama of the conflict between social expectations of men in times of war and the real traumatic experience they undergo, as well as the crisis of imperial masculinity under the influence of war and the formation of different national types of masculinity, are analyzed. It has been found that sports and sex are presented in the novel as factors of resistance to the crisis of masculinity in general. The subsequent fate of the novel is due to the fact that the depicted gender socialization did not correspond to the propagandized Soviet norm, according to which the novel was changed.

La pregunta de sus ojos, la primera novela de Eduardo Sacheri publicada en 2005, fue el hipotexto en que Juan José Campanella basó su película El secreto de sus ojos (2009), una de las más taquilleras en la historia del cine argentino. El artículo se propone analizar los procedimientos de transposición, poniendo foco en los personajes, el punto de vista, la construcción de la temporalidad y el desenlace. También se comparan las relaciones que cada texto establece con la historia argentina y los temas que cada versión acentúa. A partir de la descripción de las diferencias entre ambos textos, se proponen claves de lectura para asignar sentido a las transformaciones de la novela a la película.

Oliver Twist, el huérfano más célebre de la literatura, hizo su aparición en las páginas de Bentley’s Miscellany en febrero de 1837. Desde entonces, su historia ha figurado en todo tipo de medios textuales y audiovisuales, de suerte que la imagen del infante de familia desconocida, cuya inocencia le lleva a triunfar ante la injusticia social que lo asedia, guarda una relación indisoluble con la obra de Charles Dickens. El linaje diegético del expósito Oliver se descubre en las páginas finales de la novela que lleva su nombre. Su genealogía artístico-literaria, sin embargo, es un secreto a voces que inspira personajes peculiares y una estructura narrativa basada en coincidencias y revelaciones. En este artículo se exploran algunas de las conexiones más relevantes entre Oliver Twist y las narrativas dieciochescas que le antecedieron. En específico, se atienden los legados de las novelas de Henry Fielding y las narrativas visuales de William Hogarth, los cuales fueron determinantes no sólo en la representación tragicómica de las clases bajas —como se ha llegado a sugerir— sino también en la concepción del protagonista, la caracterización de personajes secundarios y el diseño de la trama principal.

The article examines the seminal novels of Ukrainian women writers from the first and second decades of the 21st century, namely “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets” (“Музей покинутих секретів”, 2009) by O. Zabuzhko and “The Beech Land” (“Букова земля”, 2019) by M. Matios. The selected works are analyzed through the lens of postcolonial criticism, that is, from the point of view of the historical experience of the statelessness of the Ukrainian community and its reflection in literary texts. The main attention is paid to the narrative features of the works, namely the tendency to broad narrative, integrity, and narrative completeness. The purpose of the study is to highlight the postcolonial content of the narrative strategies implemented in the selected novels by O. Zabuzhko and M. Matios. Given that “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets” and “The Beech Land” represent different periods and ideological and aesthetic paradigms, namely postmodernism and metamodernism, one of the tasks of the study is to assert the relevance of postcolonialism in the context of metamodernism. The article aims to highlight the peculiarities of the artistic realization of “postcolonial” narrativity in postmodern and metamodern texts. Additionally, the narrative features of the selected novels are compared. The stated purpose necessitates the application of hermeneutic (interpretation of a literary text), comparative (identification of common and distinctive features of the selected works) methods, as well as the method of structural analysis (examining the narrative structure of the texts). As a result of the study, it is established that postcolonialism, inherent in Ukrainian postmodern prose, remains relevant in the second decade of the twenty-first century. The postcolonial orientation of the novels “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets” and “The Beech Land” is manifested in their intention to affirm the continuity of Ukrainian history by building a panoramic narrative that covers different historical periods and establishes a hereditary connection between them. The study identified the following features common to both novels: the intertwining of family genealogy with national history; the development of narratives at different generational levels – children, parents, grandparents, etc.; the theme of the perpetual war for independence that continues to this day; the image of God as a transcendent guardian of history, capable of seeing the intertwining of human destinies in their entirety. The defining theme shared by both novels is the anti-colonial struggle, particularly the military campaign of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army. This theme necessitates depicting the tragic consequences of imperial oppression. In “The Beech Land”, these are devastation and turmoil, fratricide, ruptured familial ties, the destruction of the Bukovynian “utopia”. In “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets”, these repercussions are shown through the lens of postmodern hypertextuality – as “burnt manuscripts”, irretrievably lost archives, fragmented stories. In addition, the selected novels exhibit an inclination to transcend the boundaries of realistic storytelling. Employing the montage technique, “The Museum of Abandoned Secrets” incorporates a mystical discourse of dreams that operates as a parallel reality, recounting events of the past. The oneiric discourse resonates with the image of an endless virtual archive storing memories of everything that has ever happened in the world. In “The Beech Land”, the departure from realistic historiography occurs through metamodern fantastisation, where the historical panorama is framed by the story of the “Heavenly Chancellery” – a celestial archive inhabited by the Creator and the Angels. Desde la noción del secreto, como algo que permanece oculto, resistiéndose a su aparición en las tramas de las novelas, pero que al mismo tiempo articula desde una especie de vacío todo el texto, proponemos el acercamiento al secreto político en las novelas. Este trabajo de investigación propone una revisión de algunos de los aspectos sobre los que han incidido los estudios de literatura policial a la hora de analizar La muerte baja en ascensor, la novela que dio inicio, en 1955, a la dilatada trayectoria literaria de María Angélica Bosco. Los estudios consagrados a esta novela han coincidido en subrayar el carácter tradicional u ortodoxo de su propuesta cuando es interpretada desde el marco general de la novela policial de los años cincuenta e, incluso, este pretexto ha servido para supeditarla a las obras posteriores de la autora, cuyas formas se aproximan a la novela negra norteamericana. Con el ánimo de relativizar dicha exégesis de la novela, los tres epígrafes de este estudio pretenden delinear lo singular de sus modulaciones de las formas del género policial a partir del lugar de los personajes femeninos en la trama, de la aplicabilidad de los conceptos de enigma y de secreto a su estructura narrativa, y discutir, al fin, que la novela reproduzca la superposición de tramas característica del género policial según lo dilucidó Tzvetan Todorov. Este examen permitirá, asimismo, poner la figura del primer detective bosquiano y sus métodos gnoseológicos en relación con las ideas sobre el género policial de Jorge Luis Borges, quien incluyera la novela en la colección “El Séptimo Círculo”, que entonces codirigía con Adolfo Bioy Casares.

Para ello despliega tres ideas: el secreto como algo visible o sentido común; la ceguera moral de sus personajes como impotencia autoimpuesta, y el encierro como técnica social de sometimiento. Usa la pragmática literaria para proponer una lectura inmanente de la novela, es decir, interpreta el delirio desde el delirio mismo. Abstract Edith Wharton’s Sanctuary was long dismissed for want of a convincing plot and heroine, but the novella has been shown to reward focused inquiry. It may be read, among other things, as a revealing, early example of Wharton’s uses of secrets and silences to portray women’s lives. Withholding would become a central feature of her writing, and the topic of women, one of her enduring artistic interests. This article examines Sanctuary’s fictional and textual secrets, as well as the roles of silences with reference to the numerous instances of vigil-keeping in the novella. It finds Wharton exploring acts of withholding by a woman and imbuing them with a significant power to transform others, so subverting the historical silences and silencing of women.

The novel coronavirus outbreak has reached pandemic proportions in a short time, like other respiratory viruses. Respiratory droplets transmit the virus; various body fluids and secretions such as nasopharyngeal swabs, stool, digestive tract, urine, saliva; few anecdotal reports indicate that the virus may be present in ocular secretions and possibilities of transmission by the lacrimal-pump mechanism through tears, thus posing a transmission risk. An exposed ocular surface acts as a gateway for various respiratory viruses. Looking at the nasolacrimal system anatomical and physiological aspects, it bridges the eye and respiratory tissues. Moreover, it can also share some common viral binding receptors. The eye is less frequently involved in SARS-CoV, and conjunctivitis is the only reported complication so far. The positivity of CoV RNA in conjunctival swabs tested by RT-PCR assay in confirmed SARS-CoV patients is low. The ocular route of coronavirus transmission and its detection in the ocular secretions is still controversial. In this narrative analysis, we reviewed the latest literature and explored an in-depth understanding of the ocular consequences of coronaviruses recorded up to now. The search took place for the corresponding journal through the use of the PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Daily situations reports, IPC (Invention Prevention Control) guidelines, WHO (World health organization), and from other Internet Sources. To avoid community transmission risk, the general public must also take precautionary measures in relation to the pandemic COVID-19.

The article is dedicated to the study of the emotions of mystery in Gothic novels and thrillers. For many years, beginning with ancient times and up to modernity, mysteries and secrets were under thorough investigation by scientists. Mysteries, secrets and silence are associated with horror and happiness. That’s why they became the object of the proposed article. According to the linguacultural approach, the concepts were studied as complex phenomena, with composite meaning peculiar to the concepts under analysis. The concepts MYSTERY, SILENCE and SECRET, were considered as the typical situations, the structure of which consists of such spheres: actants, predicates, attributes, quantifiers, space and time. Each of these spheres represents part of the characteristics and makes it possible to create a general understanding of the concepts under analysis as of complex phenomena, which are most vividly revealed in Gothic novels and thrillers. These novels disclose the emotions of mystery as unknown, horrific and tense situations are the main feature of these genres. Mystery has the key role here and is the inseparable part of their understanding. It was demonstrated that the concepts under analysis represent positive and negative features which denote their ambiguous and binary character at the same time.

Introduction: Dysregulated secretion of adipokines causing adipose tissue dysfunction can contribute to the pathogenesis of obesity-linked complications like atherosclerosis. Chemerin, a newly discovered adipokine, secreted by visceral adipose tissue and liver, is involved in the regulation of glucose and lipid homeostasis. Elevated levels of chemerin in the blood have been associated with atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Aim: To examine the chemerin levels in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, to determine its association with CAD, and to find the correlation of chemerin with HsCRP and other lipid parameters. Materials and Method: This is a cross-sectional study that included 100 participants divided into two groups namely, group I comprising CAD patients, and group II healthy individuals. Serum levels of chemerin were measured by ELISA. HsCRP were measured by immunoturbidimetry method. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), LDL and TC/ HDL ratios were calculated parameters. Results: Chemerin levels were significantly increased in CAD patients (48.66 ± 12.7) (ng/ml) compared to healthy controls (32.92 ± 17) (ng/ml) (p = 0.04). AIP was significantly increased in CAD patients (6.92 ± 3.10) compared to healthy controls (3.27 ± 1.42) (p = 0.000). Chemerin had a good correlation with AIP (p = 0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed a significant association of chemerin with the occurrence of CAD (OR = 1.09, 95% CI, p = 0.004). ROC curve obtained with the area under the curve being 0.79. Conclusion: Chemerin, a pro-inflammatory adipokine, could play an important role in atherosclerosis and can be used as a marker for the diagnosis of CAD patients

In this article we analyse the topos of the home in two novels set in Lviv: “Home for Dom” by Viktoria Amelina and “The house with the Stained-glass Window” by Zhanna Sloniovska. In both of them, the eponymous ‘home/house’ contains family secrets which are meant to be representatives of the Eastern European fate. The metaphor of a home has several meanings in both novels: it refers to an apartment, a home-city (Lviv) and a homeland. On both dimensions, the home has not been presented as stable and unchanging space. It is rather a symbol of transience than permanence. In both novels, the family stories reflect the problems of identity and memory of the inhabitants of modern Ukraine.

The subject of the article is the artistic embodiment of the postmodern principles of constellation (Walter Benjamin, Theodor Adorno) and nonselection (Douwe Fokkema) in the works of prose by Slavic writers. The novels by Croatian, Polish, and Ukrainian authors — Dubravka Ugrešić’s “Museum of Unconditional Surrender”, Olga Tokarchuk’s “Flights”, and Oksana Zabuzhko’s “Museum of Abandoned Secrets” — are analyzed within comparative approach. The novelty of the study is determined by the fact that it is the first attempt to compare samples of Ukrainian, Polish, and Croatian literature in the light of the embodiment of postmodern principles of constellation and nonselection in them. The study revealed a number of formal features inherent in all three novels selected for the analysis, i.e. fragmented composition, narrative heterogeneity, multiple plotlines, and intertwining of chronotopes. At the level of content, acentric tendencies define the common for all three works emphasis on the search for meaning-making connections between random elements, attention to trifles and details as elements of the constellation structure. The motif of crossing and disappearing borders, which is realized in a specific way in the novels by Olga Tokarchuk and Dubravka Ugrešić, is eloquently acentric. All of the works selected for analysis are distinguished by their thematic inclusiveness, which manifests itself in the actualization of the marginal, imperfect, and irrelevant: rubbish, garbage, trifles, “mistakes and dead ends of creation,” “things no one needs.” A striking manifestation of nonselection is the philosophical interpretation of rubbish presented in a postmodernist tone in the novels “Museum of Abandoned Secrets” by Oksana Zabuzhko and “Museum of Unconditional Surrender” by Dubravka Ugrešić. While Oksana Zabuzhko perceives rubbish as a trace of a person’s private life, Dubravka Ugrešić sees it as a symbol of a bygone era and a vanished country, Yugoslavia. Highlighting specific features in the realization of the universal principles of postmodernism in the works of related literatures emphasizes the peculiarity and historical background of each of them. The evidence of common philosophical tendencies and similar motifs in the analysed novels gives grounds to speak of the existence of structural and typological ties between Ukrainian, Polish and Croatian literature.

Irish crime fiction has largely been a contemporary phenomenon, but it has already shown itself to have highly various preoccupations and influences, including Irish gothic modes as well as the work of international crime writers like Patricia Highsmith and Ross Macdonald. Macdonald’s Lew Archer novels, in particular, are marked by a thematic obsession with ruined and ruinous families, with children cast adrift on seas of generational corruption. Such deep connections between gothic modes, family secrets, and crime fiction offer a cultural foundation that has served Irish crime and mystery writers well. Their narratives weave together local elements with the kinds of genre writing that have, until recent decades, often been seen as importations, as mere pieces in the flotsam and jetsam of transatlantic culture, or as actively contributing to the destabilization of life on the island. Although this essay examines the sometimes spectacular gothic elements in novels by Tana French, John Connolly, and Stuart Neville, the focus is rather on versions of Irish family gothic that surface in the writing of Liz Nugent, Andrea Carter, Declan Hughes, and others. Nugent, for example, fuses a penchant for Highsmithian sociopathic narrator-protagonists with her own sharp eye for familial bloodletting, while Hughes traces generations of corruption through his narrator’s haunting sensations of dislocation and uncanny unease in a Dublin where he has become at once an insider and an outsider. Through their use of such elements, at once intimately specific and readily adaptable, Irish crime writers have both animated their genre and further affirmed the vitality of Irish gothic’s fluid legacy.

Streszczenie:

Narratology study has been debate from scholars from myth to postmodern times. However, although postmodern thinkers put aside a set rule of narrative, yet in fact in there are found numerous generous amount of narrative by incorporating the world and the self. This research attemps at applying morphological perspective of Propp’s narrative functions in J.K. Rowling’s novels such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Using qualitative content analysis approach, this research was conducted by doing documentation, examination, and classification to obtain the relevant data. The result shows that there are identified 19 functions in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which written using propp’s nomeclature symbols as βγ2δεη1θ1A14CDEG6J1K5ExI1↑, and then 21 functions in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets written in nomeclature symbols β2γδε2ζη3θA1aBCDEF5G3H2I2Rs1MNQ1, and 13 functions in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them written in nomeclature symbols αδ[η1η2η3]A13a3C[E7E8][F1F2F4F5F7]GH1I2[K2K5K6K7K10]Rs5Q3. In addition, J.K. Rowling’s novels which widely accepted as postmodern literary works are still relevant to Propp’s morphologic model of narrative functions approach. In short, Propp’s theory is applicable for the study of narrative not only for folktale but also other literary genres.

En este trabajo se propone atender a un aspecto poco transitado en los estudios sobre transtextualidad: el tránsito de un texto literario a uno fílmico (El secreto de sus ojos) y la relación que establecen con un remake (El secreto de una obsesión), adoptando una tipología que contempla las categorías de la readaptación, el remake simple y la adaptación compuesta o mixta. Se incide para ello en la representación de la violencia, de acuerdo con la distinción postulada por Steven Pinker (que sigue a Thomas Hobbes) sobre las causas del conflicto humano, y se considera, por una parte, la construcción de los personajes, y por otra, la forma en que se muestran las imágenes. De este modo, se analizan los necesarios reajustes que se llevan a cabo en dos contextos muy distintos: la etapa previa a la Dictadura Militar Argentina de 1976 (término en el que se mueven de forma variable la novela de Sacheri de 2005 y la película de Campanella de 2009) y la hipervigilancia antiterrorista tras los atentados del 11-S (en la versión de Billy Ray de 2015).

Este texto, en apretado recorrido, intenta vislumbrar que la crónica no hace otra cosa que contar historias y que las historias tanto de humanos como de dioses es lo que pervive, lo que queda en la memoria, sea como trabajo periodístico o mitología. Mucho se ha hablado en los posibles porqués. Según Tomás Eloy Martínez, el dato nos asombra pero no nos conmueve.2 Ahí está el secreto, la diferencia entre el número que da el tamaño del hecho y la palabra que lo cuenta. Ahí está también la razón de que se afirme que se ha producido un segundo boom en Latinoamérica3, pues la crónica, nacida con los poetas modernistas a finales del siglo XIX, desemboca en 1937 en L’Éspoir, la primera novela sin ficción, y continúa fluyendo con renovada fuerza creadora en todoel ámbito de nuestros países.
