Streszczenie:
Abstract The objective of this study evaluated the accuracy and repeatability when determining cull sow body condition scores (BCS) evaluated by scorers utilizing digital images. Participants (n=6) were selected based on previous BCS scoring on live sows. Group standards were established utilizing the scores from two participants with extensive experience BCS sows. Other scorers were not provided training before they scored images and no “scorer calibration” activity occurred to ensure that each scorer was observing similar traits when applying BCS. Two separate groups of sows were scored and video images for each sow were collected and stored for evaluation. The images were recorded as a convenience sample from a cooperating sow abattoir. The cull sow video images were assigned a BCS using an 8-point scale (1,1+,2-,2,3,4,5,NS). Scores from the lower portion of the scale were classified (+ and -) to provide a more specific BCS difference evaluation among sows that were thin. When scorers evaluated the sows (n=165) from the first group, they scored the BC for each sow. Additionally, a random group of sows (n=40) images were selected to be scored a second time by the same scorer. Repeatability (inter- and intra- scorer), individual bias, group bias, and group deviation from standard’s mean BCS were calculated. Data from the first sow group showed that relative to the standard’s mean scores, participants overestimated BCS by .41 (P=0.0001). A similarly selected second set of cull sow images obtained from the same abattoir was recorded. The second group included more sow images (n=220) and a greater number images that were scored a second time(n=55) in order to calculate the repeatability values. The same measures described for group 1 were calculated. After data analysis from the second sow group, it was again noted that participants overestimated BCS by 0.1 (P=0.0009).

Streszczenie:
Abstract The objective of this paper was to determine the relationship and repeatability of between-evaluator scores for claw set (CS), hoof angle (HA), and rear leg side view (RSV). Repeatability of feet and legs scoring has implications on scorer bias and subsequently on the estimation of genetic parameters, expected progeny differences (EPD), and accuracy. Data were collected on 112 13-15-month-old Simmental heifers by 4 evaluators, where scorer 1 (S1) was a trained and experienced evaluator and subsequently trained scorers 2 (S2), 3 (S3), and 4 (S4) for approximately 20 minutes before all 4 evaluators sequentially scored every female at the same time. Training was conducted using feet and leg rubrics provided by the American Simmental Association (ASA) on a 1-9 scale, with 5 being optimum for each trait. Scorers were provided an online evaluation instrument, requiring responses for each evaluator for each animal, and included identification, CS, HA, and RSV. Pearson correlations were computed pairwise, with each new scorer compared to the trained scorer. For partial linear regression, the three new evaluators were fit individually to S1. Pearson correlation values ranged from 0.088 to 0.397. The correlation between S1 and S3 was the strongest for all traits. The weakest correlation of 0.088 was in rear leg side view between S1 and S2. Partial linear regression adjusted R-squared values ranged from 0.00 to 0.15. The correlation between S1 and S3 was the strongest for all traits. The weakest correlation of 0.00 was in rear leg side view between S1 and S2. The correlations between S1 and S2 was significant for CS and HA (P = 0.002, P = 0.039), but not for RSV (P = 0.355). The correlation between S1 and S3 was significant for CS, HA, and RSV [P = 1.5x10^(-5), P = 0.006, P = 0.02]. The correlation between S1 and S4 was not significant for CS, HA, and RSV (P = 0.276, P = 0.085, P = 0.223). Overall, the scores had weak correlations, which illustrates the differences in variability across scorers. The weak correlation also illustrates the need for more robust and intensive training of evaluators. Overall, while the scores are not highly correlated between evaluators, scorer bias should not affect estimation of genetic parameters long as each contemporary group is scored by one evaluator.

Patients may be assessed using a battery of tests where different tests yield scores in different units, where different tests have different minimum and maximum scores, and where higher or lower scores mean different things in different tests. Therefore, a composite test score cannot be obtained by simple addition or averaging of scores in the individual tests. However, if performances in individual tests are converted to Z scores, the Z scores can be added or averaged to yield a composite score that can be interpreted or processed using conventional statistical methods. This article explains in simple ways how Z scores are calculated, what the properties of Z scores are, how Z scores can be interpreted, and how Z scores can be converted into other standard scores.

My portfolio consists of a number of works written for wind and brass ensembles, exploring traditional and alternative forms of textures, sounds and compositional methods. • The Hunter's Blade - A brass band work comprising three different styles. The first is wild, using folk music to create a rural scene with dramatic dynamics, attack of notes, and time changes. The second and third styles employ Jazz and popular harmonies to create an urban scene. • Fiero - A work for Brass Band with cornet soloist. This piece explores technical and lyrical aspects of playing for both soloist and band. It's based around the character of the soloist for whom it was written. The piece has mood swings ranging from wild and argumentative to smooth and sensitive, but is always performed with 'Fiero' - the Italian word for 'proud'. • Leviathan - A piece for Tuba and Piano. This work explores a range of techniques available to the modern tuba player, from the standard bass accompaniment to virtuosic soloist, displaying advanced technical ability, extended range, and multiphonics, through a range of styles from funk to classical. • Heroes of Erin - A four movement work for brass band based on Irish folk music. This features solos from the flugel, tenor horn and cornet, as well as challenging material for the band. The first movement uses a traditional tune with new harmonies and structure; the second combines Irish with a Middle Eastern style; the third is a solemn tune with a meandering harmonic progression; and the fourth is a combination of a jig and a hornpipe. • Mosaic Project - A piece exploring sounds and textures. Composed using verbal instructions to an ensemble, rather than written parts, this allowed for much freedom of expression and interpretation from the performers, within some parameters. • / Sit On Acid - A piece which features a clash of styles where the brass band takes on acid house music. A series of compromises were made in order to create a fusion. • Silhouette - A further step in the bringing together of styles. This time a combination of Latin, Jazz, Norwegian Folk and Popular Music are thrown into the mix. • Dawn of a New Age - 'Fanfare and Theme'. A rousing musical statement heralding the beginning of a new era. The piece is short, opening with a fanfare which is present throughout, and includes a theme representing pride and achievement. • The Fire and the Flood - A large work for Brass Band. This piece is based around the natural cataclysmic phenomena that occur on our planet. The music suggests volcanic eruptions, pyroclastic flows, meteorites and tsunamis - the natural disasters that effect our planet. There are a lot of influences in this work from composers such as Stravinsky and MacMillan.

The title of the piece is Sanskrit, and derives from Tibetan Buddhism (of which I am a practitioner). It is usually translated as 'wheel of time', or 'time-cycles'. The Kalachakra tradition represents a vast and profound body of teachings on the nature of time and the cosmos. Its central image is that of reality as a system of interlocking and interdependent time-cycles or 'wheels', from the cosmic scale of the stars, planets and seasons right down to the intimate periodicities of the human body: 'As above, so below'. This 'macrocosm-microcosm' time-structure is what I have tried to reflect in my piece. The piece is not meant, however, as a literal musical description of this cosmological model: rather it should be viewed as a metaphor, a parallel but ultimately musical process, obeying purely musical laws of attraction and repulsion, creation and destruction. Although Buddhism is not theistic in the conventional sense, it has a pantheon of sorts, with time personified in the form of the deity Kalachakra, a figure somewhat parallel to Shiva within the Hindu tradition ('Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds'). If the piece is illustrative in any sense then it is illustrative of the creative and destructive processes at work in the universe, but viewed here in a special sense as the body and limbs of the Adi-Buddha ('Cosmic Buddha'), the deity Kalachakra.

ABSTRACT; The inter-disciplinarity between music and visual art has been explored by leading theorists and philosophers, though very little exists in the area of the visual interpretation of graphic musical scores. This study looks at how the graphics of musical notation and symbols affect the performer in transforming them into sound, with particular reference to contemporary scores that use non¬conventional notation to create an interpretation through suggestion. Other sound-visual relationships are explored, including synaesthesia, temporality and the interconnection between work of art and audience or public. This dissertation aims to be an innovative study of contemporary musical scores, from a musical as well as visual perspective. Finally, it takes a step further with drawings of my own, directly inspired and motivated by the music. These no longer fulfil a conventionally notational function for the musician, yet the potential for a re-interpretation is ever-present.

1 score (xvii, 233 p.)
Throughout history, wondrous discoveries of science, like great pieces of music, have often come about through extraordinary feats of creativity, informed by deep rational thought yet not limited by it. Like science, music composition requires a mastery of its own technical features (instrumentation, orchestration, harmony, counterpoint, etc.), but neither music nor science can flourish when too much emphasis is placed upon the mechanical and not enough on the imagination. Composers have sometimes turned to mathematics as a tool for generating art though the systematization of musical elements. However, music often suffers from the conscious attempt by composers to bring it closer to the world of science and math through the serialization of musical material. This does not mean that mathematics and science do not play an important part in music of great expression. To be sure, composers have used simple mathematical concepts to discuss, analyze, and create music at every stage, whether consciously or unconsciously, since the beginning of Western music. These ideas are at the very heart of the great music of previous centuries, even if we celebrate those works more for their intrinsic beauty than their rational mechanics. It is the inventiveness and creativity that we find easy to value in music, but the science behind it also makes its creation possible. My symphony pays tribute to the marriage of creativity, not process, in scientific and musical thought, using the words of scientists and mathematicians as poetic texts, which generate musical imagery. I have chosen a series of quotations by notable scientists and mathematicians throughout history, which serve as textual introductions for each movement of the six-movement, approximately forty-five minute orchestral symphony. Each quotation makes reference to a specific scientific or mathematical discovery of its writer, or displays an aspect of his philosophy. The ideas expressed in the quotations serve as abstract inspiration and suggest musical imagery for each respective movement.

Streszczenie:
The historical correlation between intellectual functioning and academic achievement is largely based on individually administered achievement tests. However, the standards-based reform movement and recent special education legislation emphasize group-based achievement tests and allow for the use of state-based tests in eligibility determinations. Importantly, there does not exist research examining the IQ-achievement relationship using standards-based tests; thus, the current study evaluated the correlation between the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (WISC-IV) and those tests comprising the North Carolina assessment program (i.e., End-of-Grade (EOG) tests). Five NC school psychologists provided archival information on students (n = 76) and results yielded support for the two hypotheses, which postulated that confidence intervals placed around correlation coefficients between Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) scores and EOG-Reading and âMathematics scores would capture r =.6, which is roughly halfway between the range of historical correlations. Implications regarding the validity of the WISC-IV and its potential use in identifying learning disabilities in which achievement is measured by tests linked to state standards, as well as suggestions for future research are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Many school districts and alternative certification programs use standardized interviews such as the TeacherInsight developed by the Gallup Organization. The TeacherInsight is a Web-based interview consisting of multiple choice and Likert-style items that produces a score between 0 and 100. The Gallup Organization claims that it helps hire the best teachers. The study analyzed the relationships between the TeacherInsight scores and the eight Professional Development Appraisal System (PDAS) domain scores for 527 teachers. The TeacherInsight scores produced a statistically significant correlation with only one of the eight PDAS domain scores. However, even that correlation (r = 0.14) was weak. All eight PDAS domain scores were only able to account for an additional 1.9% of the variance of TeacherInsight scores, above and beyond what was explained by the teachers' age, gender, years of experience, and highest degree earned. Another finding was that 47.4% of the teachers hired had TeacherInsight scores below the district recommended cutoff score of 67. The findings do not support the ability of the TeacherInsight to identify more effective teachers, based on Professional Development Appraisal System scores. The findings also cast doubt on the extent of consideration that principals in this district give the TeacherInsight scores during the selection process. Recommendations for future studies are provided.

Abstract In 2015 and 2016, the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) undertook a National Facilities Audit (NFA) to augment the periodic audit exercises of the Ministry. This Audit was the first of its kind conducted in Trinidad and Tobago and involved upstream, midstream and downstream energy sector companies. Some companies scored highly in the Audit, some were average and others below average. This paper will provide guidance to operators who scored below the average so that they can make the necessary adjustments to improve their Asset Integrity scores to above average and beyond in future. The selected consultant who performed the NFA developed a standardized audit protocol to audit all the companies. The MEEI set up a Steering Committee to oversee the execution and delivery of the audit to ensure it was conducted within the project's objectives. The consultant and MEEI representatives conducted joint audits, which involved document reviews, interviews and site visits. A Systems and Equipment Audit was conducted followed by a site visit. The project lasted 9 months, a total of 30 audits were conducted during the period, and a report prepared and presented to the MEEI by the consulta nts with the findings and recommendations. Scores were assigned to various categories in both the System and Equipment Audits, which contributed to a System score and Equipment score. From these two scores, an overall score was determined. The audit found that Asset Integrity Management (AIM) systems showed a wide variation across the industry, international companies were typically more advanced with AIM than domestic companies, the state-owned companies had the lowest scores and Joint Venture companies generally had the highest scores. Generally, many companies did poorly in the audit due to lack of proper documented internal procedures with respect to Asset Integrity. Companies that did well had well-documented procedures for process safety management. The paper will show the benefit of conducting a nationwide Asset Integrity Audit that can inspire other countries to consider doing likewise and thus encourage improved Asset Integrity Management in the global energy sector. The paper will go into the details of the audit so that in future companies would be more prepared for a similar type of audit, and who show significant improvements with their scores.

Streszczenie:
Pedestrian safety inventories for auditing roadway features and infrastructure are a promising way to rapidly assess pedestrian injury likelihood in a city location, particularly when the auditor can score the location remotely via tools such as Google Street View (GSV). This study provided a preliminary assessment of whether two remote assessment inventories were as reliable as in-person auditing, and whether the two tools were associated with pedestrian safety measures. The researchers repeatedly performed crossings at six locations to collect safety outcome data. For the safety inventories, one team of coders scored the locations in-person, and a separate team of coders scored the locations in GSV. Analyses indicated generally good agreement between the in-person and GSV scores, and a significant relationship between the inventory scores and driver yielding/stopping rate to the crossing pedestrians. The two inventories were predictive for different reasons, and future research will further assess and refine them.

Streszczenie:
Digital Promise sought to create and validate two sets of Historical Thinking Skills rubrics for use in its evaluation of Gates Ventures’ World History Project (WHP) curriculum: one for evaluating teacher-assigned activities, and another for evaluating the student work those activities produced. Adopting a principled assessment development approach called Evidence Centered Design (Mislevy et al., 2003), the Digital Promise team began by conducting an academic literature review to inform rubric design, then piloted the draft rubrics to test their validity by having expert world history teachers score a sample of world history assignments and associated student work and provide feedback on the rubrics and scoring process. We found that scores that trained raters assigned to activities and student work were generally consistent across scorers, and scorer feedback indicated that the rubrics did indeed measure valuable historical thinking skills. Based on an analysis of rubric scores and scorer feedback, our team revised the draft rubrics to their final form.

Streszczenie:
Duolingo has developed a computer adaptive test of English competency for non-native English learners. This research study of the validity and reliability of the Duolingo English Test was independently conducted from February-April of 2014. The study lasted for approximately eight weeks. Participants were recruited from Duolingo users who studied English, international students in several United States universities, and people who took Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) at several TOEFL centers in China. Participants were at least 18 years of age and had taken the TOEFL within the last 18 months. Participants filled out a survey in the beginning of the study to provide information of their demographics such as age, gender, native language, and education background, experience in learning English, and most importantly, the date and location of taking the TOEFL iBT as well al their TOEFL scores. The participants were directed to complete the Duolingo English Test at the end of the survey. Two weeks later, the participants were instructed via email to fill out a second survey and the Duolingo English Test for the second time. Main results: • Participants’ scores on the Duolingo English Test correlated substantially with their TOEFL total scores, and moderately with TOEFL section scores, with higher correlations for the TOEFL Speaking and Writing sections. This provides criterionrelated evidence of validity of the Duolingo test scores. • Participants’ scores on the first Duolingo English Test correlated highly with their scores on a second test two weeks later, indicating that Duolingo test scores are reliable with a good test-retest reliability coefficient. • Duolingo English Test scores were linked with TOEFL total scores to find the comparable scores from the two tests that have similar percentile rank. Duolingo English Test scores are on a scale of 0–100 and TOEFL scores are on a scale of 0–120. For international students to apply for studying in US universities, the minimum cut-off score of TOEFL iBT is 80 and a more selective cut-off score is 100, corresponding to scores 50 and 72 respectively on the Duolingo English Test.
