“Rapid response” features enable supercapacitor energy storage systems (SCESSs), used as auxiliary equipment for primary frequency regulation (PFR), to meet the stability and reliability requirements of power grids. In this application, capacity allocation for SCESSs is studied through theoretical derivation and simulation experiments. Firstly, the application scenarios of SCESSs in PFR are analyzed on the basis of weak grid frequency characteristics. Secondly, in two typical operating modes, namely virtual inertia control and droop control, an integrated operating mode is presented with consideration of the start-stop timing and the output depth of SCESSs, and the relationship between the operating modes and rated powers is derived. Then, to satisfy simulation needs of PFR, an analysis model for SCESSs is built, and a common process of SCESS capacity allocation is summarized. Finally, the optimal rated power, virtual inertia coefficient and droop coefficient of an SCESS is calculated with reference events and frequency control requirements of a weak grid as the benchmark. The results show that aforementioned theory is correct and reasonable, and that the proposed method can achieve optimal frequency regulation effects with a small capacity.

Background: Traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) is a debilitating condition, leading to chronic morbidity and mortality. In recent peer-reviewed studies, spinal cord epidural stimulation (scES) enabled voluntary movement and return of over-ground walking in a small number of patients with motor complete SCI. Using the most extensive case series (n = 25) for chronic SCI, the present report describes our motor and cardiovascular and functional outcomes, surgical and training complication rates, quality of life (QOL) improvements, and patient satisfaction results after scES. Methods: This prospective study occurred at the University of Louisville from 2009 to 2020. scES interventions began 2–3 weeks after surgical implantation of the scES device. Perioperative complications were recorded as well as long-term complications during training and device related events. QOL outcomes and patient satisfaction were evaluated using the impairment domains model and a global patient satisfaction scale, respectively. Results: Twenty-five patients (80% male, mean age of 30.9 ± 9.4 years) with chronic motor complete tSCI underwent scES using an epidural paddle electrode and internal pulse generator. The interval from SCI to scES implantation was 5.9 ± 3.4 years. Two participants (8%) developed infections, and three additional patients required washouts (12%). All participants achieved voluntary movement after implantation. A total of 17 research participants (85%) reported that the procedure either met (n = 9) or exceeded (n = 8) their expectations, and 100% would undergo the operation again. Conclusion: scES in this series was safe and achieved numerous benefits on motor and cardiovascular regulation and improved patient-reported QOL in multiple domains, with a high degree of patient satisfaction. The multiple previously unreported benefits beyond improvements in motor function render scES a promising option for improving QOL after motor complete SCI. Further studies may quantify these other benefits and clarify scES’s role in SCI patients.

For realizing sustainable world, Lithium-ion batteries are required to have higher energy density. Aluminum metal have been dominantly used as a current collector of positive electrode. A mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) containing 1 mol dm-3 Lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) has been used as an electrolyte solution. Aluminum forms thin passivation layer on its surface, preventing the corrosion. However, aluminum corrosion may occur due to this electrolyte solution under high voltage condition. Recently, super-concentrated electrolyte solution (SCES) [1], which consists of only two or three times as much solvent as lithium salt, has been attracting attention as a new electrolyte solution of high-voltage lithium-ion battery. Motsumoto et al. proposed that aluminum corrosion was remarkably suppressed in lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-based SCES [2]. To clarify the corrosion-inhibiting factor of SCES, we investigated aluminum corrosion in the several lithium salts based SCESs [3]. And we found that lithium perchlorate (LiClO4)-based SCES could suppress corrosion of Aluminum current collector. Liquid structure of the SCES may plays an important role in corrosion suppression. In the present work, we demonstrated Raman spectroscopy and Quantum chemical calculations to reveal the liquid structure of the LiClO4-based SCES. The LiClO4 based SCES was prepared by dissolving LiClO4 into DMC as the molar ratio of 1 : 2. For comparison, DMC solution containing 1 mol dm-3 LiClO4 and neat DMC was also prepared. Raman spectroscopic experiments were conducted using Laser Raman spectrophotometer (NRS-5100, JASCO) installed a laser at 532 nm. Quantum calculations were performed using the Gaussion 9 program suite (Gaussian, USA). Geometry optimization were conducted at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level. An intensive peak is observed at approximately 915 cm-1 for neat DMC. When a small amount of LiClO4 is added to DMC (corresponding to 1 mol dm-3 LiClO4 solution), new peak is observed at approximately 932 cm-1. This peak can be assigned to ClO4 - anion. A new peak appears at approximately 950 cm-1 with increasing LiClO4 (corresponding to the SCES). According to the Quantum calculations, the new peak is assigned to aggregate in which the ClO4 - cross-links Li+. In addition, HOMO energy of a contact ion pair (CIP), in which ClO4 - coordinates to Li+, is lower than that of free ClO4 - anion. The oxidative stability of ClO4 - increases by forming CIP and aggregate. The decomposition products of ClO4 - may affect the Aluminum corrosion. Ester prodrugs can develop novel antibiotics and have potential therapeutic applications against multiple drug-resistant bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of these prodrugs is activated after being cleaved by the esterases produced by the pathogen. Here, novel esterase ScEst originating from Staphylococcus chromogenes NCTC10530, which causes dairy cow mastitis, was identified, characterized, and analyzed using X-ray crystallography. The gene encoding ScEst was cloned into the pVFT1S vector and overexpressed in E. coli. The recombinant ScEst protein was obtained by affinity and size-exclusion purification. ScEst showed substrate preference for the short chain length of acyl derivatives. It was crystallized in an optimized solution composed of 0.25 M ammonium citrate tribasic (pH 7.0) and 20% PEG 3350 at 296 K. A total of 360 X-ray diffraction images were collected at a 1.66 Å resolution. ScEst crystal belongs to the space group of P212121 with the unit cell parameters of a = 50.23 Å, b = 68.69 Å, c = 71.15 Å, and α = β = γ = 90°. Structure refinement after molecular replacement is under progress. Further biochemical studies will elucidate the hydrolysis mechanism of ScEst. Overall, this study is the first to report the functional characterization of an esterase from Staphylococcus chromogenes, which is potentially useful in elaborating its hydrolysis mechanism.

User authentication has been widely deployed to prevent unauthorized access in the new era of Internet of Everything (IOE). When user passes the legal authentication, he/she can do series of operations in database. We mainly concern issues of data security and comparable queries over ciphertexts in IOE. In traditional database, a Short Comparable Encryption (SCE) scheme has been widely used by authorized users to conduct comparable queries over ciphertexts, but existing SCE schemes still incur high storage and computational overhead as well as economic burden. In this paper, we first propose a basic Short Comparable Encryption scheme based on sliding window method (SCESW), which can significantly reduce computational and storage burden as well as enhance work efficiency. Unfortunately, as the cloud service provider is a semitrusted third party, public auditing mechanism needs to be furnished to protect data integrity. To further protect data integrity and reduce management overhead, we present an enhanced SCESW scheme based on position-aware Merkle tree, namely, PT-SCESW. Security analysis proves that PT-SCESW and SCESW schemes can guarantee completeness and weak indistinguishability in standard model. Performance evaluation indicates that PT-SCESW scheme is efficient and feasible in practical applications, especially for smarter and smaller computing devices in IOE.

Regarding PMSG-based wind turbine generation system, this paper proposes a supercapacitor energy storage unit (SCESU) which is connected in parallel with the DC-link of the back-to-back converter to enhance its high voltage ride through performance. The analysis of the operation and control for the grid-side converter and SCESU are conducted. Based on real time digital simulators (RTDS), a model and a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) platform of PMSG-based wind turbine with SCESU is developed, and the simulation results show that the SCESU absorbs the imbalanced energy and the grid-side converter absorbs inductive reactive power during the period of voltage swell and verify the correctness and feasibility of the high voltage ride through control strategy.

An increasing amount of waste seashells in China has caused serious environmental pollution and resource waste. This paper aims to solve these problems by using waste seashells as modified materials to prepare high-performance modified asphalt. In this study, seashell powder (SP) and stratum corneum-exfoliated seashell powder (SCESP) were adopted to prepare 10%, 20% and 30% of seashell powder-modified asphalt (SPMA) and stratum corneum-exfoliated seashell powder-modified asphalt (SCESPMA) by the high-speed shear apparatus, respectively. The appearance and composition of two kinds of SPs were observed and determined by the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The types of functional groups, temperature frequency characteristics, low temperature performance and adhesion of SPMA were tested by the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), bending beam rheometer (BBR) and contact angle meter. The results show that the SP and SCESP are rough and porous, and their main component is CaCO3, which is physically miscible to asphalt. When the loading frequency ranges from 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz, the complex shear modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ) of SPMA and SCESPMA increase and decrease, respectively. At the same load frequency, SCESPMA has a larger G* and a smaller δ than SPMA. At the same temperature, SCESPMA has a larger rutting factor (G*/sin δ) and better high-temperature deformation resistance than SPMA. SP and SCESP reduce the low-temperature cracking resistance of asphalt, of which SCESP has a more adverse effect on the low-temperature performance of asphalt than SP. When SP and SCESP are mixed with asphalt, the cohesion work (Waa), adhesion work (Was) and comprehensive evaluation parameters of water stability (ER1, ER2 and ER3) of asphalt are improved. It is shown that both SP and SCESP have good water damage resistance, of which SCESP has better water damage resistance than SP. These research results have important reference value for the application of waste biological materials in asphalt pavement.

SceSam is an artistic research project (2012-15) in which we have examined interactivity in performances for children (age 3-9) through theory and practice (Nagel and Hovik 2015). Organized as a team of researchers in a research group, practitioners and theoreticians have explored the complex landscape of interactive theatre for children through performances, in seminars, in workshops and in articles. Together with mentors from SceSam, four different artist/companies have developed their own interactive performances, researching different aspects of the performers´ relationships with the child audiences in workshops. Lisa Nagel is the artistic leader of the project, which she has developed together with fellow researcher Lise Hovik and producer Hege Knarvik Sande.

There is a growing consensus that the initiatives taken under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) in India should be used as an opportunity to prepare models for Environmentally Sustainable Smart Cities (ESSC). While developed countries have earlier worked towards Sustainable Cities and now are moving towards Smart Sustainable Cities, the conditions in developing countries are different. In their current form, SCM guidelines appear to emphasize more on social and economic development along with governance issues using modern tools of information and communication technology (ICT). To ensure environmental sustainability of such large-scale development planning, after a two-stage screening process, 24 environmental indicators have been finalized (including 11 from the existing guidelines), which can be used to monitor various environmentally sustainable elements of smart cities. Accordingly, in the present study; a tentative framework has been developed using these indicators to arrive at a Smart City Environmental Sustainability Index (SCESI) on a 0–100 increasing scale, and the city’s environmental sustainability has been classified under five categories: Excellent; Good; Fair; Poor or Critically Low; based on decreasing SCESI. Using this framework, five Indian cities, which are currently being developed under SCM (Delhi; Patna; Allahabad; Varanasi; and Bhubaneswar), have been examined. The analyses indicate that while three of them (Delhi, Allahabad, and Bhubaneswar) are found in the Fair (SCESI = 40–60) category of environmental sustainability, two (Varanasi and Patna) are in the Poor (SCESI = 20–40) category. The SCESI developed may be used as a monitoring and diagnostic tool for planning and managing services connected with the environment surrounding human life.

This research investigates public policy and family farming in the Serra Dourada settlement, located in the city of Goiás, Goiás. It analyzes the design and operation of the National Family Farming Strengthening Program (PRONAF), the Program for Food Acquisition (PAA) and the National School Feeding Programme (PNAE) and the degree of integration in the state of Goiás and the Serra Dourada settlement, noting how are given the productive integration mechanisms and their relationship with the market. Assuming that public policy is state action aimed at the carrier citizen rights, we will outline the role, responsibility and state action, the market and families facing farmers for establishing and implementing public policies. Thus, it is normally analysis of the subject from the paradigm of agrarian capitalism, the agrarian question and the applicable legislation on family agriculture, with one seated interviewed on field research. Also analyzing public policies Technical Assistance, Health and Infrastructure, which interface with the PRONAF, PAA and PNAE, and can directly influence the development and access of these policies. It concludes that the productive insertion mechanisms of family farms seem to show incomplete or inefficient because it does not account for the entire production process. The precariousness of ATER service and the absence of clear policies of federal, state and municipal spheres, specific to the reality of family farming, which allow different treatment according to their characteristics and their production scale. Although many producing and marketing a lot, this did not change the way you organize socially and did not interfere in the way of relating to the land. The relationship with the formal or informal market takes place as a matter of convenience and opportunity, which shows that current legislation is incompatible with the subject of such policies, in which the low adhesion public policies to show an inconsistency between this ideal and the Subject real, it does not consider all the characteristics of this social group, such as social and economic aspects, factors which may concern the membership or not this logic as it develops the production and falls in the market.
Esta pesquisa investiga as políticas públicas e a agricultura familiar no assentamento Serra Dourada, localizado no município de Goiás, Goiás. Para tanto, analisa a concepção e a operacionalidade do Programa Nacional de Fortalecimento da Agricultura Familiar (PRONAF), o Programa de Aquisição de Alimentos (PAA) e o Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE) e o grau de inserção no estado de Goiás e no assentamento Serra Dourada, observando como se dão os mecanismos de inserção produtiva e a sua relação com o mercado. Partindo do pressuposto de que as políticas públicas é a ação do Estado voltada para o cidadão portador de direitos, delinearemos o papel, a responsabilidade e a atuação do Estado, do Mercado e dos Agricultores familiares frente à elaboração e execução das políticas públicas. Dessa forma, parte-se da análise do Sujeito a partir do paradigma do Capitalismo agrário, da questão agrária e o contido na legislação sobre a agricultura familiar, com aquele assentado entrevistado em pesquisa de campo. Analisando também as políticas públicas de Assistência Técnica, Sanitária e de infraestrutura, que fazem interface com o PRONAF, O PAA e o PNAE, e podem influenciar diretamente no desenvolvimento e no acesso destas políticas. Conclui-se que os mecanismos de inserção produtiva da agricultura familiar parecem se mostrar incompletos ou ineficientes porque não leva em consideração todo o processo produtivo. A precariedade do serviço de ATER e a ausência de políticas claras das esferas federal, estadual e municipais, específicas para a realidade da agricultura familiar, que possibilitem um tratamento diferenciado de acordo com suas características e com sua escala de produção. Embora muitos produzam e comercializem muito, isso não alterou a maneira de se organizar socialmente e não interferiu na maneira de se relacionar com a terra. A relação com o mercado formal ou informal se dá por questão de conveniência e oportunidade, o que demonstra que legislação vigente é incompatível com o Sujeito destas políticas, na qual, a baixa adesão as políticas públicas nos mostram uma incoerência entre esse ideal e o Sujeito real, pois não considera todos os elementos que caracterizam este grupo social, como aspectos sociais e econômicos, fatores estes que podem incidir na adesão ou não desta lógica de como se desenvolve a produção e se insere no mercado.

Fuel cells represent one of the most promising energy storage system nowadays. Nonetheless, several obstacles need to be overcome in order to commercially exploit this technology. One of them lies in the efficiency loss due to the overpotential of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Thus, during the last decades, researchers have mainly focused on finding optimum solid catalyst(s) with the following profile: good ORR activity, good stability under the operating FC conditions, inexpensive, widely available and environmentally friendly. Magnetic catalysts, based on 3d-metals such as Pt-based alloys fit conveniently that profile. The understanding of their outstanding catalytic properties starts with the comprehension of complex physicochemical phenomena in which the spins of the electrons play a significant role. Cooperative ferromagnetic spin-electron interactions are indeed one of the most important energetic contributions in allowing milder chemisorption of reactants onto magnetic catalysts. Accordingly, their study is the focus of this doctoral thesis.

Experimental and theoretical studies of strong electronic correlations have led to the discovery of fascinating collective quantum phenomena, what still motivates to perform researches in solid state physics and generally induces the development of modern science and technology. Emergent quantum states appear in macroscopic physical experiments, and led to the discovery and explanation of Kondo effect [1], heavy-fermion states [2], superconductivity [3], and even high-temperature superconductivity [4]. The doctoral dissertation is a guidebook through the three scientific publications. Dissertation proves the truth of the thesis: "Atomic disorder, local electronic disorder, inhomogeneity and structural distortion of heavy fermionic compounds with strongly correlated electrons determine the occurrence and dynamics of phase states and ground state properties.", through careful analysis of experimental data. To confirm thesis data from advanced physical experiments such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetic susceptibility and temperature magnetization studies, thermal and electronic transport studies at low and ultra-low temperature (up to 350 mK) also in strong magnetic fields, and electronic structure research has been analyzed. The results description and conclusions were based on advanced calculation methods for the electronic structure simulations based on the density functional theory (DFT) and on Anderson's theoretical model. For the purposes of research, the computer program "DISTorX" [5] was created to simulate charge order of the Charge Density Wave state and the structural distortion; directly visible on X-ray diffraction patterns. Generally the created program is universal enough that it can be successfully applied to a variety of structures. Ce3Ru4Sn13 compound allows us to study surprisingly many physical phenomena’s such as Kondo effect, quantum phase transition, superstructure occurrence, superconductivity, electron correlations or rattling effect.

Chromium and its compounds are used comprehensively in industries. However, it resulted in unpredictable hazard on the workers without appropriate protection. Among these compounds, Cr6+ is the prime cause of damage on human bodies. In this research, we randomly select 35 subjects from three different factories, who expose in chromium and its compounds during work, and 35 subjects who take health examinations in a hospital, which locates in the same area with the industries, who takes health examination, as a comparison. Via Sister Chromatid Exchanges and Gene Type certification, it can be detected how the severity of Chromium influences people. As the result of this experiment, the frequencies of SCEs for the exposure and comparison groups are 6.07 and 4.76 SCEs per cell and both of them have apparent distinction. (p<0.01) By multivariate regression analysis, exposure in the circumstance with chromium and its compounds is still the main factor to affect the frequency of SCEs in subjects after control for potential confounding factors. In term of smoking and non-smoking, the frequency of SCEs happened in smokers is higher than in non- smokers. (p <0.05) Simultaneously, the rate of relative risk on abnormal workers to comparison, both having a smoking habit reaches 60.38 and in non- smoking group, the rate is up to 9.00. Moreover, among exposure group, the frequency of SCEs and the rate of relative risk of abnormal individuals on subjects who work for more than or equal to five years are higher than those subjects who work years are fewer than five years. In addition, the frequency of SCEs and the rate of relative risk, on statistics, both have apparent distinction. (p < 0.05) In gene type certification section, there is no apparent distinction in the distribution of Glutathione S-transferase M1 and Glutathione S-transferase T1 between exposure and comparison subjects. While GSTM1 is a non-efficiency gene type, its frequency of SCEs is higher than efficiency gene type; As GSTT1 are non-effciency gene type, its SCEs frequency is lower than efficiency gene type but both have no apparent difference. Therefore, concluded by the results, it is not relevant between accumulation of damaged chromosomes in lymphocytes of the workers exposing in the environment with chromium and S-transferase genes GSTM1 and GSTT1.

Silicon based semiconductor technology is facing more and more challenges to continue the Moore's law due to its fundamental scaling limitations. To continue the pace of progress of device performance for both logic and memory devices, researchers are exploring new low-dimensional materials, e.g. nanowire, nanotube, graphene and hexagonal boron nitride. Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are attracted considerable attention due their atomically thin nature and proper bandgap at the initial study. Recently, more and more interesting properties are found in these materials, which will bring out more potential usefulness for electronic applications. Competing with the silicon device performance is not the only goal in the potential path finding of beyond silicon. Low-dimensional materials may have other outstanding performances as an alternative materials in many application realms.

This thesis explores the potential of TMD based devices in memory and logic applications. For the memory application, TMD based vertical devices are fully studied. Two-terminal vertical transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) based memory selectors were firstly built and characterized, exhibiting better overall performance compared with some traditional selectors. Polymorphism is one of unique properties in TMD materials. 2D phase engineering in TMDs attracted great attention. While electric switching between semiconductor phase to metallic phase is the most desirable. In this thesis, electric field induced structural transition in MoTe2 and Mo1-xWxTe2 is firstly presented. Reproducible bipolar resistive random access (RRAM) behavior is observed in MoTe2 and Mo1-xWxTe2 based vertical devices. Direct confirmation of a phase transition from a 2H semiconductor to a distorted 2Hd metallic phase was obtained after applying an electric field. Set voltage is changed with flake thickness, and switching speed is less than 5 ns. Different from conventional RRAM devices based on ionic migration, the MoTe2-based RRAMs offer intrinsically better reliability and control. In comparison to phase change memory (PCM)-based devices that operate based on a change between an amorphous and a crystalline structure, our MoTe2-based RRAM devices allow faster switching due to a transition between two crystalline states. Moreover, utilization of atomically thin 2D materials allows for aggressive scaling and high-performance flexible electronics applications. Both of the studies shine lights on the new application in the memory field with two-dimensional materials.

For the logic application, the ultra thin body nature of TMDs allows for more aggressive scaling compared with bulk material - silicon. Two aspects of scaling properties in TMD based devices are discussed, channel length scaling and channel width scaling. A tunability of short channel effects in MoS2 field effect transistor (FET) is reported. The electrical performance of MoS2 flakes is governed by an unexpected dependence on the effective body thickness of the device which in turn depends on the amount of intercalated water molecules that exist in the layered structure. In particular, we observe that the doping stage of a MoS2 FET strongly depends on the environment (air/vacuum). For the channel width scaling, the impact of edge states in three types of TMDs, metallic Td-phase WTe2 as well as semiconducting 2H-phase MoTe2 and MoS2 were explored, by patterning thin flakes into ribbons with varying channel widths. No obvious charge depletion at the edges is observed for any of these three materials, which is different from what has been observed in graphene nanoribbon devices.

Nos últimos anos, os sistemas computacionais embutidos (SCE) têm evoluído bastante. Além disso, a diversidade de requisitos das aplicações estimula o projeto e desenvolvimento de uma grande variedade de SCEs. Entretanto, os SCEs convencionais normalmente não suportam adequação, considerando as mudanças dinâmicas da carga de trabalho e ou dos requisitos. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar uma arquitetura hierarquicamente reconfigurável de sistemas multiprocessados em chip (HRA-MPSoC). A HRAMPSoC é reconfigurável, em suas diferentes camadas, para adequar a arquitetura e ou a implementação dos SCEs às variações dos requisitos e da carga de trabalho da aplicação. Resultados de desempenho, flexibilidade e escalabilidade verificam as vantagens da HRA-MPSoC no projeto de SoCs e MPSoCs, caracterizando-a como a principal contribuição.

Many offshore installations in the North Sea have now exceeded their original design life and are in a life extension phase. A Framework of six processes has been developed for the management of ageing of Safety Critical Elements (SCEs) in offshore installations. The processes include an analysis of the effect of ageing modes on SCE performance. Examples of performance indicators for typical SCEs are proposed based on how their condition and performance as may be affected by physical deterioration and other effects of ageing. Indicators for calibrating the maturity and effectiveness of the management processes are also suggested.

According to this explanation, the SCE I is based on a chromatic shift of the diffraction order triplet in the multilayer phase grating of the outer nuclear layer of the retina toward blue. This means that, on chromatic adaptation of the eye to perpendicularly incident light, the blue color channel loses brightness and the red gains relatively, which manifests itself as an SCE II red shift. In addition to the SCEs for white test lights and a constant or variable pupillary opening, the wavelength-specific decreases and increases in brightness (SCE I) and the red shift or reversal hue shift toward blue (SCE II), as occur for monochromatic test stimuli against a trichromatic background, become understandable. The two SCEs prove to be combined effects in three chromatic retinal chip diffraction orders. They can no longer be interpreted independently as separate effects at L, M, and S cones (interpreted as waveguides). The 3D grating optical explanation of the Purkinje shift and the SCEs also provides information on the interaction of three variables (the pupillary diameter, the third grating spacing in the retinal chip, and the α0β0δ0 angle relative position of light cones to the 3D grating) during bright/dark and chromatic adaptation of the eye, i.e., the interaction of stimulus-related variables, which are all relevant in front of the photoreceptor plane.
