Streszczenie:
SAW filters with one-port SAW resonators being connected in a ladder structure, which is called ladder type SAW filter, have many features such as low insertion-loss, wide pass-band and simple filter design and so on. The design methodology, features of characteristics, and developments of higher frequency filter are described for an application in cellular phones. Furthermore, in order to apply to high power SAW devices such as the antenna duplexer of cellular phones, the material of inter-digital transducers (IDT) was improved to have high power durability. The optimum design in a ladder type SAW filter, the improvement in materials for IDT, and the optimum design of the package, all contributed the success of realizing a small SAW antenna duplexer.

Streszczenie:
Due to the influence of the optical proximity effect (OPE), it is easy for a pattern of photoresistance to be inconsistent with a design pattern, thus damaging the performance of a SAW resonator. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an optimization method for SAW filters based on optical proximity correction (OPC). This method can avoid the tip discharge problem of SAW filters by suppressing the problem of rounding and shrinking of dummy electrode and electrode tail caused by OPE. This method increases the quality factor (Q) of the SAW resonator and thus decreases the insertion loss of the SAW filter. The filter increases the bandwidth by 1.8 MHz at −1.5 dB after applying the OPC method. Additionally, it improves the stability of the filter under high power conditions.

Streszczenie:
To cope with ubiquitous wireless connectivity and the increased and faster data delivery in 5G communication, surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters are progressively requiring wider bandwidths. Conventional bulk 15°YX-LiNbO3 substrates with a large coupling coefficient (K2) are attractive for the low-cost mass production of wideband SAW filters, but these generally suffer from spurious responses, limiting their practical application. In this work, a novel and simple SAW configuration is proposed that uses thickness-modulated interdigital transducer (IDT) structures to overcome the limitations set by spurious responses. Different from the conventional design where the thicknesses of the IDT electrodes in the series and parallel resonators generally kept the same, the proposed configuration adopts IDT electrodes of different thicknesses in the series and shunt resonators to suppress or remove unwanted spurious Rayleigh modes from the filter passband. Two different ultra-wideband SAW filter designs employing thickness-modulated IDTs were designed and fabricated to validate the effective suppression of spurious modes. The SAW filters experimentally featured spurious-free responses in the passband as well as a large 3 dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) in the 18.0% and 24.1% ranges and low insertion losses below 1 dB. This work can significantly broaden the range of applications for SAW devices and can open a pathway to commercialize ultra-wideband SAW filters in 5G communication systems.

Streszczenie:
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are widely used in many fields such as mobile communication, phased array radar, and wireless passive sensor systems. With the upgrade of mobile networks, the requirements for the performance of SAW devices have also increased, and high-frequency wideband SAW devices have become an important research topic in communication systems and other application fields. In this paper, a theoretical study for the realization of a layered SAW filter based on a new SiO2/IDT/128°YX-LiNbO3/diamond/silicon layered structure using the modeling software COMSOL Multiphysics is presented. The effects of lithium niobate (LiNbO3), an interdigital transducer (IDT), and SiO2 thin films on the evolution of the phase velocity, electromechanical coupling coefficient (k2), and temperature coefficient of frequency were studied by employing a finite element method simulation. Furthermore, a longitudinal coupling resonator filter was designed. To investigate the SAW characteristics of the filter, a transient analysis was conducted to calculate the electrical potential and particle displacement under the resonance condition and to analyze the frequency response. The study concluded that this new multilayer structure can be applied to design and manufacture a variety of high-frequency and wideband SAW filters with a temperature compensation function, for operation above the GHz range.

Due to the current research needs and the lack of commercial multi-channel, multi-constellation GNSS receivers, a two-board solution has been developed so it can be mated with and take advantage of the processing power of the FPGA board branded as MicroZed. In order to achieve the proposed goals, an initial phase for assessing and updating the older design, building, and testing of SiGe modules (including both the electronics and casings) has been carried out. The results included demonstrate performances at logging GPS-L1 data with similar C/N0 and AGC values as the previous versions of the modules and offering navigation solutions with accuracies of a few meters. Secondly, a first iteration and design proposal for the new generation receiver has been proposed for GPS and GLONASS L1 and L2, which has been manufactured and tested. Partial tests have been performed due to the flaws of the current revision of the MicroZed Board in regards to its communication peripherals, and the results have validated the receiver’s design provided certain modifications are considered for future iterations. Furthermore, voltage and frequency tests have provided results with an error of less than 7%, and signal tests have provided C/N0 values similar to those of the SiGe modules of around 47[dB-Hz] which will be a useful baseline for future iterations. Finally, a design proposal for an Interface Board used between the older NT1065_PMOD Board and other FPGA boards carrying the standardized FMC connectors has been added to the report and negotiations with manufacturers have been engaged.

Modern communication systems are characterized by the need for increased data-rate. This is typically achieved through a larger channel bandwidth, following the same trend already observed in the past. The number of bands and the number of antennas (MIMO) is expected to grow, as well. In this scenario, it becomes highly desirable to minimize the number of external RF filters in a transceiver, with the goal of limiting area occupation and cost of the system. From the Receiver (RX) side, this imposes strong linearity requirements, posing important design challenges in the base-band (BB) portion of the RX. In typical RX architectures, the first element after passive-mixer is a TIA or a high-order filter, which must be able to handle strong Out-of-Band blockers, without degrading SNR. Two different approaches in the TIA design are proposed here. The first one is based on the more "classical'' OTA closed in shunt-feedback. Instead of adopting conventional Miller compensation the proposed OTA exploits additional zero's created in both OTA and feedback path to achieve stability, with increased GLoop unity gain bandwidth (GBW = 1.5GHz). This has positive impact on IIP3, as demonstrated through an intuitive but quantitative linearity analysis. Following this approach, a Stand-Alone 20-MHz-BW TIA is designed, achieving +50.5dBm OOB IIP3 and +21 uVRMS in-band noise with 5.4mW consumption. The second proposed TIA is based on Regulated-Cascode architecture, allowing to achieve a TIA bandwidth in the order of 100MHz, which is compatible with the expected Sub-6GHz 5G channel BW. The basic Regulated-Cascode architecture is modified adding a positive capacitive feedback, with benefits for selectivity. This capacitance improves the Q of the CC poles and produces one additional pole, allowing to implement a 130MHz BW 3rd order Butterworth current filter. The filter is integrated in a Mixer-First Receiver achieving 5.5dB NF, with +21dBm IIP3 at Df/f=3, and blocker P1dB of +3dBm at Df/f = 6. In comparison with State-of-the-Art around 15x larger bandwidth is achieved with 2-3x smaller power consumption and comparable noise and linearity.

Streszczenie:
Series Active Filters (SAF) are designed for harmonic isolation and load voltage regulation of single-phase and three-phase voltage harmonic source type nonlinear loads. The novel Absolute Value Method (AVM) for load voltage harmonic extraction is proposed and applied in the control algorithm of SAF. The SAF compensated systems are represented by simplified linear models such that SAF controller gains can be easily determined. Harmonic isolation and load voltage regulation performances of 2.5 kW single-phase and 10 kW three-phase SAF compensated systems are evaluated by detailed simulations. Laboratory prototype single-phase and three-phase SAFs and loads are designed and manufactured. Digital signal processor based control platform is employed. Exclusive laboratory tests are conducted. Via laboratory experiments and simulations it is shown that AVM yields superior harmonic isolation and load voltage regulation performance compared to the conventional low/high pass filtering method. Theory, simulations, and experiments are well correlated and illustrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

A vast market exists for surface acoustic devices (SAW) in areas such as wireless communication and a variety of sensor applications. In particular, in the current mobile phone industry, the demand for SAW devices has led to a commercial market with a respectable level in annual sale. This paper presents a study on the comparison of two COM models for SAW filter design. 400 MHz two port SAW filters were designed and fabricated to check the feasibility of the two COM models. Influences of the key parameters, such as the number of pairs of IDT, the cross length of the IDT, the delay distance, the number of the grating IDT pairs, etc., are discussed. Two-port ST-quartz based 400 MHz SAW filters are fabricated and tested. Results show that simulated results obtained by using the Abbott’s model are in good agreement with those from the measurements.

Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) is one of the potential research topics in this century and has rapidly grown in many different kinds of products, including communication. The advantages of the portable communication are lighter, smaller, and power-saved. It is until now the SAW devices are essential in mobile phone as the other devices are integrated in a chip. This study analyzes and designs a basic diamond film surface acoustic wave filter to obtain higher frequency filtering effect by reducing the line width of the electrodes. Since the diamond has the highest speed of the acoustic wave in all materials, the process limitation of the line width of electrode is not restricted if the higher frequency devices are required. The effective surface permittivity method is successfully used in this study to estimate the values of the electromechanical coupling coefficient for bulk materials and multi-layer structures. The theoretical analyses of the three models show that the frequency responses of the different SAW devices can be simulated through specifying the parameters of each device. Furthermore, it shows that the simulation results agree well with the experimental results.

Streszczenie:
The generation and detection of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) using interdigital transducers (IDTs) on a piezoelectric surface have been used to produce many high performance Band Pass Filters. This thesis focuses on the design and simulation of various SAW Band Pass Filters. IDTs can be fabricated on many piezoelectric substrates. The effect of substrate properties – electromechanical coupling coefficient and SAW velocity, on filter frequency response is analyzed. The IDT design properties comprise film thickness ratio, metallization ratio, acoustic aperture, and number of finger pairs. The behavior of electrical equivalent circuit of an IDT that consists of impedance parameters – radiation conductance, radiation susceptance, and capacitance, is simulated and analyzed for different piezoelectric materials. Different IDT designs offer different propagation environment to SAWs. The IDT designs based on electrode spacing – uniform and non-uniform, direction of SAW propagation – bidirectional and unidirectional, acoustic aperture – apodized and unapodized, and electrode configuration – solid electrode and split electrode, are studied. The effect of IDT design on filter performance is assessed. The design of linear phase SAW filter using fourier transform, and effect of truncation on filter specifications – amplitude ripple, side lobe rejection ratio, insertion loss, and transition bandwidth is thoroughly depicted and analyzed. The cosine window function technique is used to improve filter performance. The second order effects – bulk wave interference, diffraction, impedance matching, electromagnetic feedthrough, triple transit interference, and harmonics that corrupt the filter performance are elaborated. The effect of metallization ratio on higher harmonic suppression is studied. Design of advanced SAW band pass filters – comb filters and resulting frequency response is also explored.

In this thesis, coupling-of-modes (COM) approach and equivalent circuit model (ECM) are applied to design surface-acoustic wave (SAW) filters for various applications. A ladder-type SAW filter at IEEE 802.11a WLAN band is designed and the chip size is 214 × 115 μm2. An RF filter for unlicensed band of WiMAX and 802.11b WLAN is proposed and the chip size is 431 × 145 μm2. A miniaturized low-loss SAW duplexer has been developed for the WiMAX band and the chip size is 295 × 226.5 μm2. A six-channel low-loss switchable SAW filter bank is designed for the WiMAX system. It has the insertion loss of less than 1.8 dB, channel bandwidth of 20 MHz, stopband rejection of more than 35 dB, and the chip size is 3 × 1.7 mm2. Those SAW filters are designed on 42 YX-LiTaO3 substrate with aluminum (Al) electrodes. Sensitivity study has also been conducted. i

Streszczenie:
A microwave filter is a two-port component usually employed when there is a need to control the frequency response at any given point in a microwave system. They provide transmission at certain frequencies, which are known as the passband frequencies, and attenuation at other frequencies, which are referred to as the stopband frequencies. The frequencies outside the passband are attenuated or reflected. Microwave filter is often named after the polynomial used to form its transfer function (i.e., Chebyshev, Butterworth [or maximally flat], Elliptical, etc.). The filter can be further sub-divided into four categorises (i.e., lowpass, highpass, bandstop, and bandpass filters) according to its frequency responses. This chapter gives a detailed discussion on filter classification and transfer function. It also covers the analysis, design, and implementation of a test microwave filter using the 21st century SIW transmission line. The simulation and measurement results of the test filter is also presented, compared, and discussed.

Streszczenie:
In this chapter, a novel method of designing a microwave diplexer circuit is presented. This technique involves merging a section of a dual-band bandpass filter (DBF) with a section of two separately designed bandpass filters (BPFs). The chapter covers the step-by-step procedures that informed the successful realization of the diplexer circuit model. The circuit model coupling arrangement, simulation, and results are also covered. The diplexer circuit developed here has been simulated using the Keysight ADS circuit simulator. The results presented show a very good isolation between the transmit and the receive bands of the diplexer circuit.

Streszczenie:
Deciduous tooth is of great significance as it maintains the space for permanent dentition. Conventional pulpectomy procedure is performed with stainless steel hand files. The rigid nature of these files may cause bizarre canal shapes. The time taken during biomechanical preparation may lead to further worsening of the patient's cooperation, especially in Pediatric Endodontics. Though rotary file system has several advantages, it fails to clean the curved and oval shaped canals efficiently. The Self-Adjusting File (SAF) introduces a new era in Pediatric Endodontics by performing the conventional steps of shaping and cleaning at the same time. The SAF is a cylindrical hollow file that adjusts to the root canal in three dimensions and is a solitary file system formed of Ni-Ti matrix. The SAF is under continual irrigation through an irrigation device and works in an in-and-out vibration propelled by a handpiece. The SAF system has retained the original contour of the canals without dentinal cracks in primary teeth. The aim of this review is to describe design of the SAF, operational parameters and features, and advantages of SAF over other file systems in Pediatric Endodontics.

Streszczenie:
In this chapter, the microstrip square open-loop resonator (SOLR) has been utilised in the implementation of the microwave diplexer circuit model established in Chapter 4. The SOLR is very popular and well known resonator type commonly used in the implementation of microwave passive devices including filters and diplexers, due to its compact size. The simulation and measurement results show good agreement, with a band isolation of about 50 dB achieved between the transmit (Tx) and the receive (Rx) bands of the diplexer.
