Streszczenie:
The reverse force on the returning blade of a water turbine can be reduced by setting a deflector on the returning blade side of a rotor. The deflector configuration can also concentrate the flow which passes through the rotor so that the torque and the power of turbine can be considerably increased. The placing of Savonius in Darrieus rotor is carried out by setting the Savonius bucket in Darrieus rotor at the same axis. The combination of these rotors is also called a Darrieus-Savonius turbine. This rotor can improve torque of turbine. Experiments are conducted in an irrigation canal to find the performance characteristics of presence of deflector and Savonius rotor in Darrieus-Savonius turbine. Results conclude that the single deflector plate placed on returning blade side increases the torque and power coefficient. The presence of Savonius rotor increases the torque at a lower speed, but the power coefficient decreases. The torque and power coefficient characteristics depend on the aspect ratio of Savonius rotor.

Savonius rotor is a typical style of vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT). A new innovative design of two Savonius rotors coaxially in the opposite direction is presented in the paper which is different from the traditional design. The traditional generator has only a pair of stator and rotor and matched with trational Savonius rotor. Enlarging the relative speed between the magnetic pole and the coil pole by making the two pole rotate in the opposite direction in the innovative Savonius wind turbine. In this way, it can enhance the power generation efficiency of the Savonius wind turbine. The fluid-solid coupling analysis for the Savonius wind turbine is used to calculate the power characteristics and efficiency of the wind turbine.

An experimental performance study of Savonius small rotors is performed in this work. Two Savonius prototypes, two blades and the same aspect ratio, were constructed from vinyl polychloride and use different air flow. Experimental tests allowed the rotation speed of each rotor to be determined for different air flows. It is important to note that the average angular velocity of the smaller rotor is approximately fifty percent higher than the larger rotor. At the same time, the absorption torque on the rotor shaft was measured and the mechanical power of each Savonius wind turbine prototype was estimated. The main result was that wind turbines of the same aspect ratio have different performances.

Savonius rotors are large and heavy because they use drag force for propulsion. This leads to a larger investment in comparison to horizontal axis wind turbine (HAWT) rotors using lift forces. A simple construction of the Savonius rotor is preferred to reduce the production effort. Therefore, it is proposed here to use single-segment rotors of high elongation. Nevertheless, this rotor type must be compared with a multi-segment rotor to prove that the simplification does not deteriorate the effectiveness. The number of segments affects the aerodynamic performance of the rotor, however, the results shown in the literature are inconsistent. The paper presents a new observation that the relation between the effectiveness of single- and multi-segment rotors depends on the wind velocity. A single-segment rotor becomes significantly more effective than a four-segment rotor at low wind speeds. At high wind speeds, the effectiveness of both rotors becomes similar.

Since the Savonius rotor has a low starting torque and is adaptable for wind in various directions, it has received great attention in the past decades. In this paper, we present an overview of the state of the art in Savonius rotor design, according to three general strategies of design optimization: 1) Optimizing Savonius rotor structural parameters including overlap ratio, aspect ratio of the rotor, twist angle, Reynolds number, and the shaft of the rotor; 2)Adopting multi-level Savonius rotor or combining Savonius rotor with other type rotor to avoid negative torque of the rotor and improve both efficiency and starting torque; 3)Adding auxiliary devices such as curtain or guide-box to decrease the negative torque. We conclude with a discussion of the advantages and challenges associated with development of this promising technology.

In this paper, a new configuration is proposed for Savonius rotors by installing two Counter-Rotating Savonius Rotors together and adding a V-shaped shield. For evaluating the performance of this type of turbine, turbulent unsteady flow around the rotor is simulated using ANSYS-Fluent 16.0 software. Numerical results of the torque and power coefficients of the turbine show a significant improvement in the aerodynamic performance compared to a single Savonius rotor. Effects of the V-shaped shield angle and distance from the rotors on the aerodynamic performance of the turbine are studied numerically. Analyzing the results show that in a design with a shield angle of 90° and with a shield distance of L = 1 D power coefficient increases by 80%.

Helical Savonius rotor is considered to be superior to conventional Savonius rotor in terms of higher power coefficient (Cp) and better starting characteristic. However studies related to helical Savonius rotors is few. In view of this, in this paper, the performance of a helical Savonius rotor with shaft at 45° bucket twist angle for one complete cycle of rotation was analyzed using Computational Fluid Dynamics. A two-bucket helical Savonius rotor with shaft was designed using GAMBIT, having a height of 60 cm and diameter of 17 cm with 45° bucket twist angle. A three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis using Fluent package was done to predict the performance of the rotor. Standard k-? turbulence model with second order upwind discretization scheme and standard wall condition was used. Grid independence test was also conducted to have the best meshing accuracy. Power coefficients (Cp) of the rotor at different tip speed ratios were evaluated for rotor angle variation from 0° to 180°. Cp at each rotor angle increased with increase of tip speed ratio up to an optimum tip speed ratio, but then decreased even if tip speed ratio was further increased. Moreover, the effect of rotor angle on Cp in a complete cycle of rotation was analyzed. Cp was found to be positive at all rotor angles, and higher values of Cp were obtained at rotor angles namely 45°, 90°, 225° and 270°, which would contribute maximum power production by the rotor. In addition to these, flow physics of the rotor was studied using tangential velocity plots w.r.t. rotor angle and path lines across the rotor. It was found that at 45°, 90° and 135° rotor angles, maximum concentration of the path lines near the tip of the blades in the upstream and downstream side of the rotor had occurred, which would be responsible for generation of maximum power coefficient in its clockwise rotation.

For the first time, experimental studies have been performed to assess the effect of flaps with triangular elements on the operation of the N-Darrieus and Savonius rotors. It has been established that the rotational speed of the original N-Darrieus and Savonius rotors having blades with flaps is greater than the rotation frequency of the N-Darrieus and Savonius rotors of the known construction by 18%, and the power factors of the N-Darrieus and Savonius rotors are for 17% and 19% more. Optimization of the geometrical parameters of the blades can lead to an increase in the power factor of the N-Darrieus rotor up to a value of 0.72, which is higher than the maximum possible value of 0.45 for the horizontal axis wind turbine. It is advisable to aggregate N-Darrieus rotors with Savonius rotors having a large starting torque. The upgraded N-Darrieus and Savonius rotors, as well as the combined rotors based on them, can be used in power supply systems for various objects on land and at sea.

It is shown that the placement of such rotors on the roofs has its own characteristics, which is the need to take into account the relief of the roof of the house, its surface area, rose and wind speed over it and others. Examples of wind farms are considered and it is proved that their energy efficiency can be increased by using hybrid vertical-axial rotors, which consist of a combination of Darrieus and Savonius rotors, where the Darrieus rotor is the main source (s) of wind energy conversion. in electric, while the rotor (s) of Savonius provide acceleration of Darrieus rotors.

Renewable sources of energy, abundant in availability, are needed to be exploited with adaptable technology. For wind energy, the wind turbine is very well adapted to generate electricity. Among the different typologies, small scale Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) present the greatest potential for off-grid power generation at low wind speeds. The combined Darrieus-Savonius wind turbine is intended to enhance the performance of the Darrieus rotor in low speed. In combined turbine, the Savonius buckets are always attached at the rotor shaft and the Darrieus blades are installed far from the shaft which have arm attaching to the shaft. A simple combined turbine offers two rotors on the same shaft. The combined turbine that consists of two Darrieus and Savonius blades was tested in wind tunnel test section with constant wind velocity and its performance was assessed in terms of power and torque coefficients. The study gives the effect of the radius ratio between Savonius and Darrieus rotor on the performance of the turbine. The results show that there is a significant influence on the turbine performance if the radius ratio was changed.

The computations are implemented at different values of tipspeed ratio from 0.2 to 0.4 with a step of 0.05. Both rotors have the same dimensions with an external overlap between their blades equals 0.02 m. The results indicate that the double blade rotor performs better than the single blade rotor in terms of power coefficient. In addition, the torque coefficient is improved at all tested values of tip-speed ratio. Furthermore, the results of the simulation show that the maximum power coefficient was 0.163 at tip-speed ratio = 0.4 for the double blade rotor, whereas the maximum improvement of the double blade rotor occurs at tipspeed ratio = 0.2 with a percentage of 11.86% compared to the single blade rotor. Wind energy is known as renewable energy with the properties of the free, abundant and readily available source of energy. Wind power has now been seen as an alternative way to generate electricity. However, the existing wind turbines to harness this energy, which is used to transform wind kinetic energy into electricity still suffer low conversion capabilities. This study is therefore set out to evaluate the performance of a double-stage Savonius-type rotor while aiming to examine the effectiveness of this technique in increasing the efficiency while overcoming the inherent low inefficiency of the Savonius rotor. The simulations involved the use of the K-omega SST as the turbulent viscosity model. Three simulation models based on a different number of blades on the double-stage model are tested in terms of torque, power, torque coefficient and power coefficient. It is concluded that the double-stage technique was capable of enhancing the performance of the Savonius rotor. It was observed that more blades on a double-stage rotor have a negative effect on the performance of the Savonius rotor in terms of both torque efficiency and power efficiency. Comparing the three models, it was found that the two-blade model of the double-stage produced more torque and power output compared to the other three-blade and four-blade models of the double-stage Savonius rotor. Furthermore, the highest conversion efficiency in terms of power among all models occurs at the TSR of 0.6 with a corresponding maximum power coefficient of 18.4%.

Darrieus-type Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) are promising for small scale decentralized power generation because of their unique advantages such as simple design, insensitive to wind direction, reliability, and ease of maintenance. Despite these positive aspects, poor self-starting capability and low efficiency in weak and unsteady winds deteriorate further development. Adaptive Hybrid Darrieus Turbine (AHDT) was proposed by the author in the past study as a potential solution to enhance low wind speed characteristics. The objective of the current research is to optimize the parameters of AHDT. AHDT integrates a dynamically varying Savonius rotor with a Darrieus rotor. A fully detailed 2D numerical study employing Reynold-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) is carried out to investigate the impact of the Darrieus rotor diameter (DR) on the Savonius rotor (DT) with regard to hybrid turbine performance. The power coefficient of the Darrieus rotor is evaluated when the Savonius rotor is in the closed condition (cylinder) of various diameters. The influence of Reynolds number (Re) on the torque coefficient is examined. Power loss of 58.3% and 25% is reported for DR/DT ratio of 1.5 and 2 respectively for AHDT with solidity 0.5 at 9 m/s. The flow interaction between the Savonius rotor in closed configuration reveals the formation of von Karman vortices that interact with Darrieus blades resulting in flow detachment. An optimum diametrical ratio (DR/DT) of 3 is found to yield the maximum power coefficient of the Darrieus rotor.

Abstract The use of ducted configuration to increase the efficiency of wind turbine rotors is gaining wide attention in the scientific community. Specifically for mini and micro rotors in urban environment applications this solution demonstrated to be very attractive. The possibility to overcome the Betz limit for power coefficient was widely demonstrated in ducted horizontal axis wind turbines. However, very few studies have dealt with ducted Savonius rotor despite these rotors represented an efficient solution for urban environment thanks to their simplicity, their cheapness and the low cut in velocity in highly turbulent conditions as well. Furthermore, the ducted Savonius concept, might be applicable to oscillating water column wave energy devices, thanks to its self-rectifying capability and simplicity. For these reasons, the authors carried out an experimental campaign to verify the impact of ducting the Savonius rotor, thus leading the way for a possible exploitation of this configuration in many practical applications. Specifically, The present paper deals with a study of ducted Savonius type air turbine performance. In particular, turbine performance was studied as a function of turbine overlap ratio. Four overlap ratios were tested: 0, 1/6, 1/3 and 1/2. A specific experimental setup was built to test ducted turbine, while bare turbine performance was measured using a wind tunnel. All tests were performed at fixed air velocity: 5 m/s. On the basis of the results, it is possible to state that ducted turbine performance is higher than bare turbine performance, at all tip speed ratios and for all overlap ratios. The optimal turbine overlap ratio is equal of 1/3.

The present study considered the design improvement of Savonius rotor, in order to increase the efficiency of output power. An investigation was conducted to study the effect of geometrical configuration on the performance of the rotor in terms of coefficient of torque, coefficient of power and power output. Modification of conventional geometry has been designed by combining the effect of number of blades and shielding method. CFD simulation was conducted to analyze the flow characteristic and calculate the torque coefficient of all the rotor configurations. The continuity and Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and realizable k-ε epsilon turbulence model are numerically solved by commercial software Ansys-Fluent 14.0. The results obtained by transient and steady method for the conventional two bladed Savonius rotor are in agreement with those obtained experimentally by other authors and this indicates that the methods can be successfully applied for such analysis. The modified 3 and 4 bladed rotors with hybrid shielding method gave the highest maximum power coefficient which 0.37 at TSR 0.5 and output power exceed 4 watts with rotor dimensions of 0.2m width and 0.2m height. This blade configuration also is the best configuration by several percentages compared to the other model from the previous study

This work aims to investigate computationally the performance of Savonius vertical axis wind turbine having a new design feature for its blade geometry. The proposed design is based on a universal consideration of blade shape factor concept for the Savonius rotor blade. A blade shape factor ranges from zero to infinity, or vice versa, is considered in a single blade of the modified Savonius rotor. This means that each point in the two-dimensional blade profile of the suggested blade design has a single value of blade shape factor that is defined based on the dimensions of conventional semi-circular blade. The computational results of the proposed blade shape design, having blade shape factor varying from infinity to zero, showed an improvement in turbine performance as compared to conventional blade shape design. Moreover, increasing the operating range of Savonius wind turbine is expected.

This study is intended to increase the rotor performance of the Savonius wind rotor, by increasing the numbers of blades of the already existing two blades Savonius vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) to three which was designed to increase the Savonius wind rotor performance. Two stage three bladed wind turbine system has been designed and constructed. The system was made up of six split drums which were welded together to form a concave shape to capture wind from all directions, with a shaft to pass through the midst of the welded drums which was then mounted on a tower of about 15 m high, which in turn will cause the rotor to rotate. This was then connected to a 12 V Generator. The wind turbine converts the kinetic energy available in the wind to produce electricity, using the Generator with output power of 60 W. The results obtained showed that the system was able to accept wind from any direction and commenced rotation as soon as the wind speed of 3.3 m/s (cut in) was available at the site. The minimum and maximum power outputs of 5.14 W and 13.34 W, corresponding to wind speeds of 7.2 m/s and 9.4.5 m/s were recorded respectively. Similarly, for a rotation per minute of 811 rpm a voltage of 7.14 V was generated. Hence for a two stages three blades Savonius the performance was 12.2 %, as against a single stage two blades Savonius whose performance was 7%, a deviation of 5.2 %.

The Savonius-conventional wind turbine is a class of wind turbines designed with a vertical axis. It has a good starting capacity and an insensitivity to wind direction. It works relatively at low wind speed in an easy installation. Savonius wind turbine faces major drawbacks, including some of the low efficiency and high negative torque created by the returning blade. Many attempts have been undertaken to optimize the blade’s shape to increase the performance of these wind turbines. The vertical axis is still under development. The elliptical-blades with a cut angle equal 47.50° have recently shown enhanced performance. In this study, we investigate the effect of Elliptical-bladed multistage Savonius Rotors (rotor aspect ratio, stage aspect ratio) on the performance by means of numerical simulation. The results obtained by comparison of one, two, and three-stage rotors indicate that the maximum power coefficient increase with a number of the stages (for the rotors with similar RAR of 0.7). Moreover, for the rotors with similar SAR of 0.7, the two stages have the highest performance than others.©2020. CBIORE-IJRED. All rights reserved

The objective of the current computational study is to predict the performance output of a modified two-bucket Savonius rotor. Each bucket consists of three arc-type blades of different radius which is determined by the slot width ratio, in the range of 0.05 to 0.15 and the slot central angle, in the range of 0 to 20 deg. Nine configurations are designed with a fixed rotor diameter and a variable slot width and slot central angle, aiming to resolve the performance output and investigate the effect of the two previous parameters on the power and the static torque coefficients. The commercial CFD package Fluent® is used to solve the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, along with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model. Initially, a standard Savonius rotor, was used to validate the computational procedure using experimental results available in literature. Next, the same validated model is used to resolve the designed slotted bucket configurations. The performance of the examined slotted bucket configurations indicates improved self-starting characteristics, but a lower power coefficient compared with the solid bucket Savonius rotor. Lower values of slot width ratio have improved output performance while the slot central angle, does not greatly affect the overall performance of slotted bucket rotor

Savonius vertical axis wind turbines have simple structures, can self-start in environments with low wind speed and strong turbulence intensity, and can be installed at low costs. Therefore, installation is possible in urban centers with low wind speeds, which may contribute to the construction of a decentralized power system. Savonius wind turbines are operated by drag force, with the blades moving in the same direction as the flow current providing the thrust force and those moving in the opposite direction of the wind being rotated by the drag force. In this study, the Savonius wind turbine design was examined to develop a stable wind turbine for use in urban centers at low wind speeds. The Savonius rotor design variables (aspect and overlap ratios) and blade forms (semi-circular, Bach, and elliptical type) were examined using computational fluid dynamics analysis. Moreover, a rotor capable of providing the target output was designed and maximum rotor efficiency of 18% was realized. Further, changes to the flow corresponding with various turbine layouts were analyzed to determine the arrangement that would maximize turbine performance. The results showed that the maximum efficiency of the turbines was in the 17–19% range and without significant variation.

Vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT) have attracted a lot of attention recently as an efficient tool in harnessing wind energy; however these types of wind turbine are faced with some challenges which affect their overall performance. The Darrieus rotor has difficulty to self-start by itself while the Savonius rotor has low efficiency. The performance of these turbines can be improved by combining the two VAWTs as one system. This paper presents the design of a hybrid VAWTs turbine. The Hybrid VAWTs combines the Darrieus rotor and the Savonius rotor as a single system to produce a high starting torque and enhanced efficiency. The Savonius rotor is placed at the centre of the three vertical blades of the Darrieus H-rotor to form the hybrid VAWTs. The hybrid VAWT was tested at four different wind speed i.e. V = 4.80 m/s, 4.50 m/s, 4.30 m/s and 3.90 m/s respectively. The performance of the hybrid VAWT was compared with the conventional straight bladed VAWT under similar experimental conditions. The obtained results showed that there is substantial improvement in the self-starting ability and coefficient of power (Cp). At V = 4.80 m/s, the Cp values for hybrid VAWT increased by 92% compared to straight bladed H-rotor VAWT. Similar improvement was also observed at wind speed of V = 4.50 m/s, 4.30 m/s, and 3.90 m/s where the Cp values increases by 71%, 10%, and 67% respectively compared to the straight bladed H-rotor.

The geometries of blade of the three rotors are a plane, a semi-circle and a quarter of sphere. The building data are calculated on the basis of the nominal wind velocity V= 10m/s and the speed ratio λ= 0.3 with an industrial flow simulation code (ANSYS-Fluent). In the steps to save our earth from global warming every nation focused on their own way to promote green energy among which the Savonius vertical axis wind turbine is one of the excellent viable solutions for scavenging wind energy in a downtown background, due to distinctive characteristics such as compactness, self-starting ability at light wind, minimum noise level, with relatively reasonable price and simple assembly. However, the traditional Savonius Wind Turbines with semicircular blades has a proportionately low power coefficient together with a high negative torque produced by the returning blade is a crucial disadvantage of this rotor. The need for energy and electricity has been increasing globally, and this means more power is required from the power plants. Power plants, however, will then continue harming the earth because of the greenhouse gasses produced while generating energies that contribute to global warming. Using renewable sources to produce clean energies is one of the sustainable methods to deal with such challenges. Wind energy is one of the renewable sources, which is accessible anywhere on earth, creating green energy. Wind turbines are mainly categorized into Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWT) and Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT). This paper firstly presents a general comparison between the HAWTs and VAWTs. Then, it presents mathematical modelling for the aerodynamic factors of HAWT and Darrieus VAWT to assist the researchers to understand some key design aspects of wind turbines, such as lift/drag ratio, tip speed ratio, power coefficient, and torque coefficient. Also, this paper presents a review of the aerodynamic performance of the recent VAWT designs to help researchers to identify and choose the best model among the Savonius and Darrieus rotors for further development or designing a new model at different wind conditions. This comparison review shows that for a large scale HAWT upwind 3 bladed wind turbines are the most optimum. The helical Savonius rotors perform better by having positive torque coefficient at all azimuth angles. Moreover, helical Darrieus was found to produce lesser noise and suitable for conventional areas. hybrid Savonius-Darrieus rotors can solve the self-starting challenge of the VAWTs, and they are suitable at low wind speeds. At last, this review shows some of the recent hybrid Savonius-Darrieus rotors which would help to solve the low efficiency of Savonius rotor and self-starting challenge of Darrieus rotors.

The motion of a wind powered land boat is studied. It is supposed that the land boat moves along a straight line in a steady horizontal wind flow. The axis of rotation of the Savonius rotor is vertical. The rotation of the Savonius rotors induces the Magnus force that maintains the motion of the load boat. Such vehicles can be used to perform transportation in large open areas, where there is an access to free wind. In this paper, the mathematical model of the land boat driven by the Savonius rotor is constructed. The quasi-steady approach is used to describe the aerodynamic action upon the system. Corresponding aerodynamic coefficients are approximated basing on experimental data. The angle between the wind velocity and the velocity of the boat is a varied parameter of the model. The equations of the model are presented as a dynamic system of the second order. The conditions of existence and stability of stationary modes of the dynamic system motion are obtained. It is described how the boat speed at steady motion depends upon the angle formed by the velocity of the boat and direction of the wind. In particular, it is shown that the maximum of the boat speed is achieved on the close-hauled course, that corresponds to the recommendations of the sail settings known in sea navigation.

Streszczenie:
Savonius wind turbines have distinct advantages in terms of simplicity, low noise, and ease of manufacturing, yet they are not preferred for large-scale power generation due to their lower aerodynamic performance and high wind loads. This study is aimed at reducing the thrust load with retractable type telescopic blades. This novel telescopic Savonius turbine is tested in an open jet wind tunnel to assess the performance in terms of torque, power, and thrust on the rotor. The dynamic and static characteristics are obtained for both extended and retracted configuration after correcting the experimental data for wind tunnel blockage. A preliminary numerical study is carried out in an effort to determine the variation of the drag coefficient in relation to the bucket thickness. The proposed telescopic turbine demonstrates a reduction in thrust load of 72.4% with a maximum power coefficient of 0.14 at the tip speed ratio of 0.7 compared to an extended operating configuration, similar to a conventional Savonius turbine. Thus, the telescopic Savonius turbine can be scaled up to higher kilowatt capacity with the cost comparable to other high-speed rotors such as Darrieus or horizontal axis wind turbines.

Streszczenie:
The paper gives an overview of vertical axis wind turbines. We have researched efficiency of a combined Darrieus and Savonius H-rotor with flaps having triangular parts. For the comparison, we consider vortex wind turbines with horizontal axis propeller rotors. It was proven that vertical axis wind turbines with combined rotors are more energy efficient based on experimentally found results. The proposed vortex wind turbines can be used for autonomous power supply, especially in remote areas.
