The classic Savonius semi-circular blade turbine has a relatively low power coefficient. The performance of a Savonius wind turbine depends on its geometrical parameters. Various blade profiles have been developed in the past years to improve the performance of this class of turbine. In this paper, a new blade shapes of Savonius wind turbine is investigated numerically by using the CFD method , by using transient conditions and set k omega turbulence model. The new blade has different concave and convex shape, which is a combination of the conventional and the elliptical blade. A comparative study of three blade profiles, semi-circular, elliptical and the composed blades have been performed.Flow structures around the rotor have also been analyzed. The results show that changing the blade shape has an effect on the performance efficiency of the Savonius turbine. The new modified and the elliptical blade exhibit higher performance compared to the conventional Savonius wind turbine. The new modified Savonius blade and the elliptical blade exhibit an improved performance compared to the conventional model in the order of 20.5% and 18.2% respectively at the tip speed ratio of 0.8.

Wind energy is gaining special interest worldwide due to the necessity of reducing pollutant emissions and employ renewable resources. Traditionally, horizontal axis wind turbines have been employed but certain situations require vertical axis wind turbines. With a view to improve the efficiency of a vertical axis wind turbine Savonius type, the present work proposes a bioinspired design blade profile relying on the Fibonacci spiral. This shape is repeatedly presented in nature and thus it leads to a bio-inspired blade profile. A numerical model was carried out and it was found that the Fibonacci shape improves the performance of the original Savonius shape, based on semicircular blade profiles. Particularly, the Fibonacci blade profile increases around 14% the power in comparison with the Savonius blade profile. Besides this comparison between Savonius and Fibonacci, a research study was carried out to improve the efficiency of the Fibonacci turbine. To this end, the effect of several parameters was analyzed: number of blades, aspect ratio, overlap, separation gap, and twist angle. Improvements on the average power greater than 30% were obtained.

Savonius wind turbines are wind turbines that canoperate at low wind speeds, this type of turbine is very suitable tobe used in several places in Indonesia. The research aims toimprove the performance of the Savonius wind turbine withvariations in the number of turbine blades as well as variations inthe velocity of wind speed. The research method wasexperimental where wind turbine testing was carried out withvariations in the number of turbine blades with number of 2, 3and 4 blades, other variations carried out were wind speed at 3.5;4,5; 5.5 and 6.5 m/s. The study results show that the 2-bladeturbine produces greater rotation, but the torque moment islower than the 3 and 4 blade turbines, this can be seen in the lowefficiency of the 2 blade turbine at low wind speeds with highloading. At 3.5 m / s wind turbines 2 blade turbines haveefficiency that tends to be the same as 3 and 4 blade turbines upto 0.5 N but at loads of 0.6 - 1.2 N 2 blade turbines have lowerefficiency, while at wind speeds of 4.5 - 6.5 m / s 2 blade turbineshave greater efficiency than turbines 3 and 4 blades up to a loadof 1.2 N but if the load is added then the efficiency of 2-bladeturbines can be smaller than efficiency 3 and 4-blade.

The helical Savonius is a vertical wind turbine that can utilize wind energy to become a renewable energy source. This study aims to determine the effect of the number of blades and the ratio of blade bends on the performance of the Savonius helical wind turbine. The research was conducted through experimentation using variations in the number of blades 2 and 3 blades. Variation of blade bending ratio H / L = 6/10, 7/10 and 8/10 and variations in wind speed (4.0), (5.2), (6.4) and (7.4) m / s. The turbine performance analysis is reviewed based on the shaft rotation (RPM) of the turbine and the output voltage (volts) generated by the generator connected to the turbine shaft. The results showed that the wind speed, the number of blades, and the blending ratio of the blades affect the performance of the Savonius helical wind turbine. The results of the maximum wind turbine performance test at a variation of 3 blades, a ratio of 6/10, and a wind speed of 7.4 m / s, produce a shaft rotation value of 472.9 rpm and a generator output voltage value of 5.51 volts. This work aims to investigate computationally the performance of Savonius vertical axis wind turbine having a new design feature for its blade geometry. The proposed design is based on a universal consideration of blade shape factor concept for the Savonius rotor blade. A blade shape factor ranges from zero to infinity, or vice versa, is considered in a single blade of the modified Savonius rotor. This means that each point in the two-dimensional blade profile of the suggested blade design has a single value of blade shape factor that is defined based on the dimensions of conventional semi-circular blade. The computational results of the proposed blade shape design, having blade shape factor varying from infinity to zero, showed an improvement in turbine performance as compared to conventional blade shape design. Moreover, increasing the operating range of Savonius wind turbine is expected.

Small-scale vertical-axis wind power generation technologies such as Savonius wind turbines are gaining popularity in suburban and urban settings. Although vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) may not be as efficient as their horizontal-axis counterparts, they often present better opportunities for integration within building structures. The main issue stems from the suboptimal aerodynamic design of Savonius turbine blades, resulting in lower efficiency and power output. To address this, modern turbine designs focus on optimizing various geometric aspects of the turbine to improve aerodynamic performance, efficiency, and overall effectiveness. This study developed a unique optimization method, incorporating a new blade geometry with guide gap flow for Savonius wind turbine blade design. The aerodynamic characteristics of the Savonius wind turbine blade were extensively analyzed using 3D ANSYS CFX software. The optimization process emphasized the power coefficient as the objective function while considering blade profiles, overlap ratio, and blade number as crucial design parameters. This objective was accomplished using the design of experiments (DOE) method with the Minitab statistical software. The research findings revealed that the novel turbine design “OR0.109BS2BN2” outperformed the reference turbine with a 22.8% higher power coefficient. Furthermore, the results indicated a trade-off between the flow (swirling flow) through the gap guide flow and the impact blockage ratio, which resulted from the reduced channel width caused by the extended blade tip length.

A vertical hybrid turbine commonly consists of a Darrieus and Savonius rotor where the Savonius is inside Darrieus turbine. This paper describes the experimental study of hybrid Darrieus-Savonius wind turbines by variation in Savonius blade height. In this case, the effect of the blade height of the Savonius blade was studied experimentally in a subsonic wind tunnel. The effect of the height of a Savonius blade relative to that of Darrieus called blade height ratios δ was investigated to know the hybrid turbine performance. The performance is represented by power and torque coefficient. The result shows that the hybrid turbine with height ratio greater than unity δ = 1.4 gives the highest power CP = 0.20 and torque coefficient CT = 0.129. It is investigated that the torque and the power coefficient have a higher value than that of Darrieus turbine, in which the increase in power and torque coefficient are 48% and 29%, respectively. This hybrid wind turbine with a blade height ratio greater than unity can be considered as an important variable in the wind turbine construction.

In order to improve the static start-up problem of Savonius wind turbines, a Savonius wind turbine with a modified blade is proposed. It was obtained by twisting the half-cylindrical blades of the basic Savonius wind turbine by 70°. The aerodynamic performance of the wind turbine before and after the modification was compared. Firstly, the static torque coefficient of two wind turbines at different azimuth angles were obtained by means of three-dimensional numerical simulation. The static flow field around the wind turbine was analyzed. Then, the output power and speed characteristics of a spiral Savonius wind turbine under different incoming wind speeds were evaluated in the wind tunnel. The results show that, compared with the Savonius wind turbine with half-cylindrical blades, the spiral wind turbine could start at any azimuths in one rotation cycle. The reverse torque was eliminated. The static torque coefficient fluctuation range was reduced by 10%. The start-up performance was effectively improved. This investigation could provide guidance for the improvement of start-up characteristics of Savonius wind turbines.

Wind energy is known as renewable energy with the properties of the free, abundant and readily available source of energy. Wind power has now been seen as an alternative way to generate electricity. However, the existing wind turbines to harness this energy, which is used to transform wind kinetic energy into electricity still suffer low conversion capabilities. This study is therefore set out to evaluate the performance of a double-stage Savonius-type rotor while aiming to examine the effectiveness of this technique in increasing the efficiency while overcoming the inherent low inefficiency of the Savonius rotor. The simulations involved the use of the K-omega SST as the turbulent viscosity model. Three simulation models based on a different number of blades on the double-stage model are tested in terms of torque, power, torque coefficient and power coefficient. It is concluded that the double-stage technique was capable of enhancing the performance of the Savonius rotor. It was observed that more blades on a double-stage rotor have a negative effect on the performance of the Savonius rotor in terms of both torque efficiency and power efficiency. Comparing the three models, it was found that the two-blade model of the double-stage produced more torque and power output compared to the other three-blade and four-blade models of the double-stage Savonius rotor. Furthermore, the highest conversion efficiency in terms of power among all models occurs at the TSR of 0.6 with a corresponding maximum power coefficient of 18.4%.

The reverse force on the returning blade of a water turbine can be reduced by setting a deflector on the returning blade side of a rotor. The deflector configuration can also concentrate the flow which passes through the rotor so that the torque and the power of turbine can be considerably increased. The placing of Savonius in Darrieus rotor is carried out by setting the Savonius bucket in Darrieus rotor at the same axis. The combination of these rotors is also called a Darrieus-Savonius turbine. This rotor can improve torque of turbine. Experiments are conducted in an irrigation canal to find the performance characteristics of presence of deflector and Savonius rotor in Darrieus-Savonius turbine. Results conclude that the single deflector plate placed on returning blade side increases the torque and power coefficient. The presence of Savonius rotor increases the torque at a lower speed, but the power coefficient decreases. The torque and power coefficient characteristics depend on the aspect ratio of Savonius rotor.

Savonius wind turbines are characterized by various advantages such as simple design, independence of wind direction, and low noise emission, but they suffer from low efficiency. Numerous investigations were carried out to face this problem. In the present paper, a new idea of the Savonius turbine with a variable geometry of blades is proposed. Its blades, made of elastic material, were continuously deformed during the rotor revolution to increase a positive torque of the advancing blade and to decrease a negative torque of the returning blade. In order to assess the turbine aerodynamic performance, a two-dimensional numerical model was developed. The fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method was applied where blade deformations were defined by computational solid mechanics (CSM) simulations, whereas computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations allowed for transient flow prediction. The influence of the deformation magnitude and the position of maximally deformed blades with respect to the incoming wind direction were studied. The aerodynamic performance increased with an increase in the deformation magnitude. The power coefficient exceeded Cp = 0.30 for the eccentricity magnitude of 10% and reached 0.39 for the highest magnitude under study. It corresponded to 90% improvement in comparison to Cp = 0.21 in the case of the fixed-shape Savonius turbine.

The air streams from the outlet of an air compressor can be used to generate electricity. For instance, if a micro-sized Vertical-Axis Wind-Turbine (VAWT) is installed towards the airflow, some amount of electricity can be generated before being stored in a battery bank. The research’s objectives are to design, fabricate and analyze the performance of Helical Savonius VAWT blade rotors, which is tested with and without using a wind concentrator. The Helical Savonius VAWT is tested at 0 cm without the concentrator, whereas the blade rotor is tested at concave-blade position when using the concentrator. The blade and the wind concentrator designs were based on the dimensions and the constant airflow of the air compressor. The findings suggested that the blade produced its best performance when tested using wind concentrator at concave-blade position in terms of angular speed (<em>ω</em>), tip speed ratio (<em>TSR</em>) and the generated electrical power (<em>P</em><em>E</em>). The findings concluded that the addition of wind concentrator increases the airflow which then provided better performances on the blades.

This research proposes a new model of overlap and helix blade shape. The overlap shape of the blades gives room to the air flow shortly after pounding the blades. Air flow direction is strived to be able to push the next blade so that the process of the turbine blade rotation becomes more effective. While the helix model is expected to produce a more efficient turbine rotation due to its multilevel shape. The wind speeds tested were 2 m / s, 4 m / s, and 6 m / s. Turbine speed rotation data retrieval is carried out at each additional time. The overlap blade has a greater angular velocity value of 9.4 rad / s at 2 m / s wind speed, 21.9 rad / s at 4 m / s wind speed, and 29.8 rad / s at 6 m / s wind speed.Turbines with multilevel helix blades have a higher level of stability compared to overlap blades. This is because there are two levels of turbine blades which have an angle difference of 600 which can receive more stable wind collisions. However, due to the smaller cross-sectional area of the helix blade turbine (ie 50% of the overlap blade) the effective impact area on the blade is also getting smaller. So that the energy that can be converted is also relatively smaller than the overlapping blade.

Savonius turbines have been the subject of various wind energy projects due to their good starting characteristics, easy installation, and independency of wind direction. However, the Savonius rotor suffers from low aerodynamic performance, which is mainly due to the adverse torque of the returning blade. A recently introduced design suggests using pivoted blades for the rotor to eliminate the negative torque of the returning blade. In this study, the aerodynamic performance of the newly proposed turbine has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The experimental measurements are performed in a subsonic open-jet type wind tunnel facility. The numerical simulations are performed using ANSYS-Fluent commercial software, by making use of the multiple reference frame model. The effects of the number of blades (3-, 4-, and 6-bladed) on the torque and power coefficients are examined in details, at several Reynolds numbers. Results show that the new rotor has no negative torque in one complete revolution and that the 3-bladed rotor has the best aerodynamic performance, in a manner that, it reaches a maximum power coefficient of 0.21 at TSR = 0.5. Although increasing the number of blades decreases the output torque oscillations, it also decreases the average power coefficient of the rotor. Results show that Reynolds number does not have a significant effect on the average power coefficient of the rotor in the studied range of 7.7 × 104 ≤ Re ≤ 1.2 × 105.

The inconsistency of the wind flow considered as one of the factors which tend to decrease the performance of the wind turbine. This paper proposes a further analysis of the initial rotation characteristic of a hybrid Savonius - Darrieus wind turbine. The addition of the Darrieus blade intends to increase the aerodynamic stability of the overlapping Savonius turbine. This study implements 2D CFD transient analysis using the 6DOF methods in 00, 300, 600, and 900 Darrieus blade position along with 2 m/s, 4 m/s, and 6 m/s wind speed variations. The results of the aerodynamic analysis show that the location of the Darrieus 300 turbine provides the greatest initial repulsion, especially when the turbine rotation is above 900, the position of the Darrieus blade can provide additional impulse force when the Savonius turbine tends to be passive. This effect occurs more significant at higher wind speeds. Savonius with 3-blade modification has a more stable level of force distribution than the 2-blade modification, although the value is smaller. This shows that the 3-blade Savonius provide a higher stability of angular velocity development.

The performance of the single and double blade Savonius rotors are numerically analyzed using the K-ε/realizable turbulence model. The computations are implemented at different values of tipspeed ratio from 0.2 to 0.4 with a step of 0.05. Both rotors have the same dimensions with an external overlap between their blades equals 0.02 m. The results indicate that the double blade rotor performs better than the single blade rotor in terms of power coefficient. In addition, the torque coefficient is improved at all tested values of tip-speed ratio. Furthermore, the results of the simulation show that the maximum power coefficient was 0.163 at tip-speed ratio = 0.4 for the double blade rotor, whereas the maximum improvement of the double blade rotor occurs at tipspeed ratio = 0.2 with a percentage of 11.86% compared to the single blade rotor. Moreover, the highest value of the torque coefficient was 0.524 at tip-speed ratio = 0.2 for the double blade rotor.

<p>Savonius wind turbines have advantages of self-rotating at low speed wind, high starting torque, and less noise generation. However, they have low electric power generation capacity. This paper presents electric power generation improvement for small Savonius wind turbines when operating at low-speed wind of 1-6 m/s by using optimal Bach-type blades, twist blades and a wind tunnel. The turbine prototypes with the optimum diameter and height of 32 cm were developed with 3 different blade types: conventional semicircular blades, Bach-type blades and twisted 15° blades and a wind tunnel. The experimental results showed that the Savonius wind turbine with Bach-type generated highest electric voltage, which was 19.3% and 7.6% higher compared to conventional blades and twisted 15° blades. The additional wind tunnel could improve electric power generation efficiency by approximately 21.4% compared to the turbines without the tunnels.</p>

The wind is a renewable energy source (alternative energy) as a substitute for the dwindling fossil fuel. L-type Savonius wind turbine is a technology that is widely used to convert wind energy into mechanical because its construction is simple and cheap. The disadvantage of this turbine is having a lower efficiency than other types of wind turbines. Modification of the curvature of the L-type Savonius wind turbine blade is assumed can improve its performance because it affects the direction and magnitude of wind and wheel velocity, consequence impact to power. Thus, the blade angle is interesting to review. There are three angles of blade studied: 30º, 45º, and 60º. Based on results, the blade angle influences the performance of the L-type Savonius wind turbine, where the 45º blade angle produced better performance than 30º and 60º.

ABSTRACTThe growth and disproportionate consumption of electricity as well as the level of pollution continues to increase, prompting a lot of research on new and renewable energy power generation. One of the renewable energies that produces electrical energy is wind power generation. The savonius type wind turbine is a turbine that is suitable for operation with relatively low wind speeds and is suitable for use as small-scale power plants. In this study, the author also examines the configuration of the savonius blade slope variations, type u overlap and type u non-overlap. In order to know the technical specifications of this wind power plant, the author designed a prototype of the Savonius turbine wind power plant with wind speed variations of 0-8 m/s, turbine blade slope variations of 00, 150 and 300. Based on experiments that have been carried out turbines with blade slopes 150 on non-overlap savonius blades produces the highest voltage and RPM. The average voltage produced on the slope of the blade is 3.61V at 1081 RPM, and the output current reaches 950mA with a load resistor of 10Ω. This work presents a numerical study of the aerodynamic performance and the resulting flow field of two novel Savonius wind turbines with twisted blades. The novelty relies on the blade manufacturing process which is characterized by a ‘twisted cut’ through the central axis of a hollow cylinder (tube), followed by a partial twisted cut in the range of 90°. This approach does not require any expensive fabrication process such as blade molding and/or 3D prints, and, therefore, it can potentially mitigate the production costs. The main goal is to investigate the operational parameters and the overall performance of the presented devices, which are currently being operated in atmospheric conditions. For this purpose, three-dimensional simulations have been performed using the open-source CFD library OpenFOAM in order to solve the governing equations and for characterizing the main phenomena involved in the flow pattern. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach together with the k − ω SST model were employed to reproduce the flow turbulence effects. This model is validated using wind tunnel measurements of the power ( C P ) and torque ( C M ) coefficients from a straight blade Savonius turbine. Unsteady simulations of the two turbine prototypes were investigated at different tip speed ratio TSR ( λ ) by varying the rotational speed of the rotor while keeping constant the free stream (rated) velocity V ∞ . The results were compared against the Savonius turbine employed for validating the model. Aerodynamic loads and general wake structure were studied at the optimal operational conditions as well. For the same turbine configurations, the new blade geometry improved the performance by 20–25% (at its optimal TSR), compared to the conventional straight blade Savonius rotor, as well as the reducing torque fluctuation.

<pre>The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the transformation of savonius turbine blades using the Cp-TSR curve. The transformation referred to here is the change in the angular of the blade so that the area of the cross section of the blade moving downwind changes, by doing so the negative torque of the turbine obtained from the air flow is reduced. The specimen has 3 variations, namely, without transformation or conventional turbine and transformation of 5 and 10 degrees. With the reduction in the cross sectional area of the turbine blades, the authors hypothesize that the turbine performance will increase, but the blade transformation movement causes a shift in the center of mass which gives rise to vibrations that can directly affect turbine performance, and it could be that the negative effect from these vibrations is much greater than the positive effect from reducing torque. Experiments were carried out using wind tunnels with load variations at 5, 6, and 7 m/s speed variations. To meet the increased demand of hydroelectric power generation, a novel drag-based Savonius turbine with the characteristics of a simpler fabrication process and good starting characteristics is designed, fabricated, and analyzed. The newly designed turbine is suitable to be installed in rivers, irrigation channels, ocean currents, etc., for small-scale hydroelectric power generation. In the present study, experiments are carried out to investigate the influence of the design parameters of this turbine on its power performance in order to improve its efficiency, including blade arc angles (180°, 135°), blade placement angles (0°, ±22.5°), and the number of blades (2, 3, 6, and 8). Further, three-dimensional CFD simulations are performed with Re = 6.72×105, matching the experimental conditions, in order to study the changes in the flow field and the rotation characteristics of the turbine. The research results indicate that a six-bladed turbine with a blade arc angle of 135° and a blade placement angle of 0° has higher torque and better power performance, which makes it the most suitable design when also considering cost. Furthermore, it was found that an increase in the number of turbine blades contributes to improving the performance of the turbine. The maximum power coefficient is 0.099 at a tip speed ratio of 0.34.

Wind energy sources in coastal areas of Indonesia are generally one of the potential renewable energy sources (renewable energy resources) that are abundant, environmentally friendly and renewable. Savonius wind turbines can produce relatively high torque even at low wind speeds. Because it is very well developed to produce electrical energy. To get a large amount of electrical power, a large turbine construction is also needed which also requires a large amount of money, of course. For this reason, the dimensions of this wind turbine construction need to be developed, known as aspect ratio (Ar). Ar which has been studied is the cross section of the blade, as well as other values. Whereas the arch depth or blade length of type U is still likely to be studied. Therefore it is necessary to do research on type U blade arcs to get more power than before. Experimental method by making a prototype savonius type U wind turbine with 2 blades. The parameters varied only in terms of the ratio of arc length and blade cross section, other parameters followed the previous study. The expected experimental results get the aspect ratio (Ar) of the best blade in capturing wind energy and producing large electrical power.

The method used is experimental, the stages of this research are in the form of literature studies, making savonius turbines, testing savonius turbines with variations in blade radius as well as data retrieval, data processing, and analysis. Based on the data obtained, the rotating speed of the turbine is influenced by variations in the radius of the blade. The larger the blade radius, the smaller the turbine rotational speed. The maximum turbine rotation speed at blade radius 63 is 173 rpm, while at blade radius, 88 is 118 rpm and at blade radius 113 is 115 rpm. So the highest turbine rotating speed at a radius of 63.

The Savonius-conventional wind turbine is a class of wind turbines designed with a vertical axis. It has a good starting capacity and an insensitivity to wind direction. It works relatively at low wind speed in an easy installation. Savonius wind turbine faces major drawbacks, including some of the low efficiency and high negative torque created by the returning blade. Many attempts have been undertaken to optimize the blade’s shape to increase the performance of these wind turbines. The vertical axis is still under development. The elliptical-blades with a cut angle equal 47.50° have recently shown enhanced performance. In this study, we investigate the effect of Elliptical-bladed multistage Savonius Rotors (rotor aspect ratio, stage aspect ratio) on the performance by means of numerical simulation. The results obtained by comparison of one, two, and three-stage rotors indicate that the maximum power coefficient increase with a number of the stages (for the rotors with similar RAR of 0.7). This paper analyzed the advantages of traditional Savonius (S-type) turbine and the reasons of its low efficiency, proposed a new type of turbine with self-rotating blades and surrounded by a rectifier, and studied the aerodynamic performance by numerical simulations. The turbine is composed of a rectifier and a rotor, the rectifier consists by straight and arc segments which can accelerate the wind speed and adjust the inflow wind angle. The self-rotating blade can reduce the impacted area acting on the leeward blade by wind and arm of the impact torque, therefore reduces the resistant torque of the blade, and the driving torque acting on the windward blade is almost the same with traditional S-type turbine, which can increase the overall driving torque. The result shows that the new turbine has the advantages as below: wide range of wind speed for effective working, high power coefficient (Cp), suitable for low wind speed aera etc. Although the flow field in S-type turbine is complex separating flow, the performance of the turbine proposed in this paper is improved and is better than traditional S-type turbine in numerical simulation which is worth for spreading.

The Savonius wind turbine is one of the most well-known vertical axis wind turbines with insensitivity to wind direction, flow turbulence, and high torque generation. These turbines can extract up to 20% of the energy from the wind. This study numerically analyzes the performance of a modified Savonius wind turbine equipped with secondary blades and slots. The k-ε standard method is used to simulate the turbulence flow around the turbine, and the simulation is performed using the ANSYS FLUENT 18.2 commercial code. The effects of distance between the main blade and the secondary blade, position of the secondary blade, the width of the main blade’s slot, and the profile of the secondary blade on the produced torque are studied and analyzed. The simulation is performed at four wind velocities: 3, 4, 5, and 6 m/s. The results showed that the output torque at the secondary blade angular position β = 130 is higher than other angles. Furthermore, by increasing the radius of the additional blade from R = 25 to 43 mm, the torque is improved, and the area below the output torque curve is increased. Moreover, the results showed that creating a slot on the main blade equipped with a secondary blade has a significant impact on the produced torque; however, the geometrical parameters of the proposed rotors should be adjusted accurately to find the best case in terms of the produced torque.

Generally, wind energy sources in Indonesia's coastal areas is one of the potential sources of renewable energy (renewable energy resources) which are abundant, environmentally friendly and renewable. Savonius wind turbines can produce relatively high torque even at low wind speeds. Because it is very well developed to produce electrical energy. To get a large electric power, a large turbine construction is also needed which also certainly requires a large cost. For this reason, it is necessary to develop the dimensions of this wind turbine construction which is known as aspect ratio (Ar). The Ar that has been researched is the blade section, and other values. While the arch depth or the length of the blade arc in U -type is still likely to be researched. Therefore, it is necessary to do research on the U-type blade arc to get greater power than before. In addition to the experimental method with a prototype of the U type Savonius wind turbine with a number of 2 blades, a software-based simulation method will be carried out to analyze the air flow on the wind turbine blade. Parameters varied only with the aspect ratio of the arc length and blade cross section width, other parameters follow the previous research. This analysis will be a comparative data with experimental methods. The expected simulation results obtain the best aspect ratio (Ar) blade in capturing wind energy.

Three-dimensional CFD simulations are carried out to study the increase of power generated from Savonius vertical axis wind turbines by modifying the blade shape and blade angel of twist. Twisting angle of the classical blade are varied and several proposed novel blade shapes are introduced to enhance the performance of the wind turbine. CFD simulations have been performed using sliding mesh technique of ANSYS software. Four turbulence models; realizable k -[Formula: see text], standard k - [Formula: see text], SST transition and SST k -[Formula: see text] are utilized in the simulations. The blade twisting angle has been modified for the proposed dimensions and wind speed. The introduced novel blade increased the power generated compared to the classical shapes. The two proposed novel blades achieved better power coefficients. One of the proposed models achieved an increase of 31% and the other one achieved 32.2% when compared to the classical rotor shape. The optimum twist angel for the two proposed models achieved 5.66% and 5.69% when compared with zero angle of twist.

The potential wind speed in Indonesia is generally low at 3 m/s to 7 m/s so that this type of vertical axis turbine is considered very suitable for use in wind conditions in Indonesia. There are several types of vertical axis wind turbines. One type of vertical axis wind turbine is the Savonius wind turbine. Many advantages that this type of wind turbine has, such as being able to receive wind from all directions, easy and cheap to manufacture, and can rotate at a fairly low angular speed. This test was carried out to determine the performance of conventional and modified savonius turbines with 2 and 3 blades variables in each turbine blade shape. The form of modification made is by changing the shape of the blade twisting by 45o. The turbine is carried out on a laboratory scale with a wind source using a fan that is directly opposite the turbine. The results showed that the highest turbine power occurred in a modified 2-blade turbine, namely 1.88 Watt with a torque value of 0.04 Nm and a shaft rotation of 450 rpm. The highest rotation value is also obtained by 2 modified blades at a wind speed of 6 m/s producing 896 rpm. However, the highest torque value is obtained by a conventional 2-blade turbine with a value of 0.136 Nm. The highest turbine efficiency in each turbine is obtained by a modified 2 blade turbine with an efficiency value of 36.92% while the highest turbine efficiency for a modified 3 blade turbine reaches 11.69% which is considered less efficient than other turbines.

Rice fields are areas that have irrigation and rarely have lighting; this is dangerous at night because wild animals such as snakes are difficult to see. Irrigation has low-scale water energy with low-head conditions; hence the Darrieus and Savonius type water turbines are considered suitable for this condition. However, until now, there has been no comprehensive study of the feasibility of the two turbines for irrigation flow. Hence this study presents the experimental work to explore the performances of the Darrieus turbines Two Blade Different Configuration and hybrid Darrieus-Savonius turbine for irrigation flow. Accordingly, four configurations of the water turbines used in these investigations, i.e., Darrieus turbine with two different blades shape the aerofoil of NACA 0016 and NACA 0020, single Darrieus turbine with the aerofoil NACA 0016, single Savonius turbine, and hybrid Darrieus-Savonius turbine with the aerofoil NACA 0016. The mechanical power of the water turbines was measured using a rope brake dynamometer. The results show that the single Darrieus turbine with the aerofoil NACA 0016 has higher tip speed ratios but a lower torque coefficient than the single Savonius turbine. Then, hybrid Darrieus-Savonius turbine with the aerofoil NACA 0016, the maximum power coefficient lower than other. Furthermore, the single Savonius turbine has the highest power coefficient than the other. And the single Darrieus turbine with the aerofoil NACA 0016 shows that the turbine has higher torque than others. Thus, based on the results, a single Darrieus turbine with the aerofoil NACA 0016 is recommended for application.

<p>This work experimentally studied the influence of guide vane design to increase Savonius rotor performance. Guide vane is one of additional device that its function is for directing wind stream on to concave blade and deserves as obstacle of the wind that flowing on to convex blade. That way increased wind speeds to the rotor, consequently it produced higher power coefficient and the Savonius rotor performed better performance. Four designs of guide vane were arranged in this study. They are basic design of guide vane and basic design of guide vane that added a tilt angle on the top and bottom sides by 15°, 30°, and 45°. The result concludes that guide vane affects the performance of Savonius rotor. The power that generated by the rotor with guide vanes increase significantly compared with Savonius rotor without guide vane. The maximum improvement was attained up to 65.89%.</p>

Increasing energy demand and environmental regulations around the world provide an adequate framework for developing methods of obtaining energy from renewable sources. Wind force is a resource with a high potential through which green energy can be obtained with no negative impact on the environment. Different turbine typologies have been developed, which can convert the wind force into mechanical and electrical energy through turbine rotational motion. Starting from the classic vertical-axis SAVONIUS rotor model, other models have been designed, which, according to the numerical studies and experimental test results, show higher performance parameters in operation. Such models present specific rotor blade geometries to achieve better operational results in terms of shaft torque and generated power. There are multiple research results from numerical analysis on virtual models or experimental tests that use rotor models in different constructive configurations aiming to improve operation performance. These research activities are related to the rotor blade number, the aspect and overlap ratio values, the blade profile geometry modification, the use of end plates connected to the rotor blades, curtain mounting solutions for directing the air flow on the active blade alone, and rotor constructive variants with deformable blades during operation. Some of the results obtained from the mentioned research activities are shown in this review for special rotor configurations whose performance results in terms of torque or power values are compared to the classical SAVONIUS model.
