Streszczenie:
Spanish conquest in the New World has two sides, evangelization, and colonization. The former was carried by the missionaries who were heavily influenced by Bartolome de Las Casa and Vitoria, while the latter by conquistadores, the defenders of the conquest. Early missionaries fought for the dignity of the Indios where they clashed with the motives of the conquistadores to exploit human resources. The problematic part was they have to work under the Spanish crown where their point of contact was also their area for friction. When they arrived in the Philippines, that social solidarity and dynamics of social relation continued where it became complex due to the involvement of various groups including the natives and their leaders, the religious orders, and most of all the Spanish Royal Court that had the history of having a heart for the Indians. King Philip II created a space for debates within his agenda of social conscience. Using Durkheim’s structuralist-functionalist approach, historical narratives about early missionaries’ struggles for natives’ dignity in the 16th century Philippines were examined. Durkheim’s social solidarity, dynamics of social relations, and his concepts of anomie as disruptions due to dramatic changes and conflicts were utilized as tools to analyze the quest for total well-being. The achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) is authenticated in amplifying the value of human dignity, equality, and respect for each individual. A filmmaker and trailblazing film distribution entrepreneur, Freude (1942–2009) became a central figure in the San Francisco Bay Area film community in the late 1960s and 1970s. Her Serious Business Company (1972–83) distributed many of the era’s most acclaimed independent and experimental films, but its lasting impact created a platform for discovering lesser-known works. Freude’s contributions to the experimental film and independent filmmaking communities remain largely unsung. This article will excite further investigation and recognition into Freude’s important efforts to support California and national artist-made filmmaking movements as it examines her professional relationships and draws from interviews, correspondence, and ephemera from the Serious Business Company archives at the Bancroft Library at UC Berkeley. It also builds on recent efforts at BAMPFA and San Francisco State University’s the Archive Project where authors Antonella Bonfanti and Tanya Zimbardo have recently been involved with public programs about Freude’s legacy.

Public libraries are a wonder—they are institutions that invite you to linger at no expense. Often, they are built as if to anticipate your needs before they even register. Although not part of their job description, community branch librarians frequently take on the roles of local educators, resource advocates, and cultural navigators. The San Francisco Chinatown Branch librarians embodied this invisible history of labor, particularly through their advocacy to revitalize the physical space of the library in the 1970s-1990s. I deploy methods of close-reading with specific theoretical frameworks on community formation and culture to analyze the librarians’ work in the service of their public branch libraries. I analyze print material and local ephemera: coalition circulations, programming and exhibition flyers, pamphlets and surveys, and newspaper and magazine articles from the San Francisco Public Library archives. I argue that libraries are not only physical community centers, but critical centralized hubs of community knowledge and culture that librarians cultivate, that are vital to combatting and reshaping narratives of who and what Asians and Asian Americans are, against dominant forms ascribed by the nation-state.

While the United States wrestles with a college completion crisis, the Division of Institutional Research at San Francisco State University found a high correlation between Ethnic Studies curriculum and increased student retention and graduation rates. Majors and minors in the College of Ethnic Studies graduated within six years at rates up to 92%. Those who were neither majors nor minors in Ethnic Studies also boosted their graduation rates by up to 72% by taking just a few courses in Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Latina/Latino Studies, or Race and Resistance Studies. Faculty in the College of Ethnic Studies demonstrated significant levels of high impact instruction in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and senior exit surveys as compared with their colleagues across the university.

Following his studies and receipt of his Bachelor of Arts with honors from Williams College, his Master of City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, his Juris Doctor from the Harvard Law School, and his diploma in Ekistics from the Graduate School of Ekistics of the Athens Technological Organization in Athens, Greece, where he studied with C.A. Doxiadis under a fellowship from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation, he practiced law with the firms of Steinhart & Falconer (Piper fìudnick) and Berkeley & Rhodes; as Deputy Secretary of the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency for the State of California, he coordinated the management and policy direction of the Department of Housing Community Development and the Department of Real Estate. He served on the Board of the California Housing Finance Agency, and also secured an extensive city planning background, having worked with Sedway/Cooke and Associates. Among his major responsibilities was directing a comprehensive study for the City and County of San Francisco incorporating economic and fiscal considerations, land use planning, transportation systems, and housing requirements for downtown San Francisco. Following this earlier period of his life, Mr Collins was Chairman and President of WDG Ventures, Inc. and Managing General Partner of WDG Ventures, Ltd which comprise the WDGV family of companies, all of which are engaged in the investment and development of commercial and residential real estate. He has also directed business development, corporate and equity finance and access to capital markets for the companies and affiliated partnerships.

Author, lecturer, and long-time liberal Democrat S.I. Hayakawa joined the faculty of San Francisco State College in 1955. A general semanticist, he became acting president of the school during the student strike of 1968-69, and rode the fame generated then into the U..S Senate as a hard-nosed Republican. He was not an effective senator and served only one term, becoming infamous for sleeping during meetings. He also justified the World War II internment of Japanese Americans and Canadians and favored declaring English America's national language. His later image as an anti-immigrant bumbler seems a parody of the man, but an evaluation of the sum of his accomplishments suggests there was much more to him than his opponents concede.

In 1969, the discipline of Ethnic Studies emerged and was implemented at a handful of colleges throughout the country, most notably at San Francisco State College where the first School of Ethnic Studies was established that year. The idea of devoting space within traditional educational institutions to the study of a particular race or ethnicity has existed since at least the 1920s when Carter G. Woodson proposed Negro History Week and encouraged the study of African American history. While Black Studies is thus the oldest of such fields within American education history, its establishment within higher education is tied to the establishment of the larger discipline of Ethnic Studies. Ethnic Studies encompasses the critical study of racial and ethnic histories and cultures and it incorporates a wide variety of methodologies. The course of the discipline throughout the past forty years has resulted in a variety of approaches to this study, thus generalizing about the field as it exists today is complicated. One thing that may be said about Ethnic Studies in its current iteration, however, is that it bears little resemblance to the proposals that ushered it into existence.

Abstract In this article, we describe how collaboration with our university librarian at San Francisco State University led to the integration of information literacy competency standards within our curriculum, as outlined by the American Library Association (ALA). The ALA standards are related to the evaluation of evidence, a key component of evidence-based practice and these were infused across four courses in the communicative disorders program focused on language development and disorders. In particular, ALA Standard 3 stipulates that the student who is information literate evaluates information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system. The integration of Standard 3 within language disorders courses is described in detail. We anticipate that the infusion of information literacy skills related to the evaluation of evidence during academic training will make such skills an integral part of the clinical process for future clinicians.

College & Research Libraries, 82(2), 237. https://doi.org/10.5860/crl.82.2.237 Abstract Objective – To identify whether academic library workers at the University of California Libraries (UCL) system experienced or observed sexual harassment and to measure their reporting and disclosure behavior. Design – Anonymous online survey with open and closed-end questions. Setting – All UCL system campuses (Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Diego, and San Francisco). Subjects – All 1610 non-student employees working in UCL system were invited to participate, 579 (36%) responded. Methods – The authors engaged multiple stakeholder groups to refine and promote this census of UCL non-student workers. The survey was distributed via REDCap and remained open for six weeks of November to December 2018. All questions were optional. Certain demographic information was not collected because respondents might have been identified via deductive disclosure. The first author conducted descriptive statistical analysis and pairs of authors conducted thematic analysis. Main Results – More than half of respondents experienced or observed sexual harassment in the workplace; women were more likely to experience than observe and vice versa for men. Harassment was most likely to be exhibited by a coworker. Less than half of respondents felt that the UCL system administration considered the issue important. Nearly three out of every four respondents who had experienced harassment at work chose not to report or disclose; this did not vary significantly between women and men. Conclusion – Sexual harassment of library workers, often by other library workers, is widespread. Staff training and policies should incorporate the reality of gender harassment and commenting on a person's appearance—the two most common forms of harassment exhibited and observed.

One of the most revolutionary movements in the history of US universities—the Third World students’ strike that shut down San Francisco (SF) State College for five months in 1968–69—had a key precursor in the Experimental College (EC), which supported student-organized courses, including the first Black studies courses, at SF State. The EC offers inspiration for creating infrastructures of radical imagination and study. The EC appropriated resources—including spaces, money, teachers, credits, and technologies—for studying within, against, and beyond the normal university. The EC facilitated courses with revolutionary content, and they fostered modes of study in these courses that were radically alternative to the education-based mode of study. Contributing my concept of “modes of study,” I offer guidance for revolutionary movements on the terrain of universities today. Through analysis of archival materials and interviews with organizers of the EC and Black Student Union, I found that the EC organizers’ potentials for supporting revolutionary study were limited by their romanticizing of education, which was coconstituted with subscriptions to modernist imaginaries. Rejecting the education-based mode of study as bound up with liberal-capitalist modernity/coloniality, organizers today can appropriate their universities’ resources for alternative modes of study and world-making.

The Failure to Implement the 1920 Treaty of Sèvres thwarted Kurdish hopes for their own state, but it did not write the Kurds out of history. From Sheikh Said’s rebellion against the Turks in 1925 to the legendary Mulla Mustafa Barzani and his son Massud, Kurds have grabbed the occasional headline and challenged central authorities more or less continually throughout the 20th century. Conversely, and in less chronicled fashion, they have also played powerful roles in consolidating state rule. Only after the Gulf War in 1991, however, did Kurds begin receiving sustained western attention and, in the last three years in particular, a new flood of articles and books by academics and journalists has swelled periodicals and library shelves. The Middle East Studies Association’s annual conferences from 1995 to 1997 all featured panels devoted to Kurds and Kurdish politics; at the MESA conference in San Francisco last December, papers concerning Kurds were also presented on thematic panels dealing with such diverse subjects as nationalism in the Middle East and youth in Turkey.

Active-learning strategies are increasingly being integrated into college-level science courses to make material more accessible to all students and to improve learning outcomes. One active-learning pedagogy, case-based learning (CBL), was developed as a way to both enhance engagement in the material and to accommodate diverse learning styles. Yet, adoption of CBL approaches in undergraduate biology courses has been piecemeal, in part because of the perceived investment of time required. Furthermore, few CBL lesson plans have been developed specifically for upper-division laboratory courses. Here, we describe four cases that we developed and implemented for a senior cell and molecular biology laboratory course at San Francisco State University, a minority-serving institution. To evaluate the effectiveness of these modules, we used both written and verbal assessments to gauge learning outcomes and attitudinal responses of students over two semesters. Students responded positively to the new approach and seemed to meet the learning goals for the course. Most said they would take a course using CBL again. These case modules are readily adaptable to a variety of classroom settings.

Academic libraries need reliable information on researcher data needs, data curation practices, and attitudes to identify and craft appropriate services that support outreach and teaching. This paper describes information gathered from a survey distributed to the College of Science and Mathematics faculty at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly), a master’s-granting, teaching-centered institution. There was a more than 60 percent response rate to the survey. The survey results provided insight into the science researchers’ data curation awareness, behaviors, and attitudes, as well as what needs they exhibited for services and education regarding maintenance and management of data. It is important that professional librarians understand what researchers both inside and outside their own institutions know so that they can collaborate with their university colleagues to examine data curation needs.

AbstractMuch has been written about the cultural, social and political impact of German popular music within the country, but the role of German popular music outside of Germany has not been sufficiently examined. The research presented here is designed to investigate an example of Germany’s export of contemporary popular music as state-sponsored promotion of its national (pop) culture. San Francisco’s weekly radio programme Radio Goethe – The German Voice, which distributes popular music from German-speaking countries to English-speaking audiences, is explored. The main purposes of this programme are to portray a modern Germany to a foreign audience and to arouse interest in the country. The weekly 60-minute series began airing in 1996 and is sponsored by the German federal government. Radio Goethe is carried by over thirty college radio stations in the USA, Canada and New Zealand, and in 2004 the German creator and host of the series received a Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz) for his intercultural work. This article briefly documents the history of the series and critically examines the presentation, style and language of the music. The results of qualitative research on the meanings that listeners assign to the music – based on questionnaires and focus group interviews with American members of the show’s audience – are presented. This case study is framed within existing debates about the relationships between popular music, national identity, cultural representation, and state-supported music export. Data from interviews with the founder of the show and the cultural ambassador of Germany in San Francisco are analysed to clarify the goals of and assumptions behind the radio series.

Abstract Malcolm X participated in over thirty speaking engagements at prominent colleges and universities between 1960 and 1963. His popularity on campuses coincided with a new epoch of civil rights struggle as students became involved in Freedom Rides and sit-in campaigns to desegregate lunch counters and interstate travel. Most invitations were debates on the topic “Integration or Separation?” which pitted Malcolm against an integrationist opponent. The insertion of racial separatism into a discourse that took integration as an unquestioned aim of the movement pushed students to question and defend their own understandings of racial liberalism. Nearly a dozen invitations were extended by NAACP student chapters that had been revitalized amid the new flurry of student involvement. Years before the founding of the first Black Student Union (BSU) at San Francisco State, these chapters were far more ideologically diverse and active than their forbearers, and often invited Malcolm X to speak out of a commitment to students’ rights to free speech and academic freedom. When administrations blocked and cancelled his visits, students became politicized around issues of academic liberties, thereby situating the Nation of Islam and Malcolm X at the nexus of early debates within the student free speech movement. These became part of the early challenge to university paternalism. While these debates and lectures have often been discussed individually, this essay looks at their cumulative effect by situating them during the emergence of student radicalism on campus and the growth of youth participation in the civil rights movement.

In early 1981, the 73rd General Assembly of the State of Arkansas in regular session passed Senate Bill 482 without debate. Governor Frank White, immediately signed the bill, admitting that he hadn't read it, and it became state law as Act 590, the “Balanced Treatment for Creation-Science and Evolution-Science Act.” A suit on behalf of 23 plaintiffs was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on May 27, 1981, and a trial before Federal Judge William Overton was scheduled for October and then postponed until December, 1981. The trial began on December 7, 1981, and it received national attention. The ACLU called well-known expert witnesses in both religion (Bruce Vawter, George Marsden, and Langdon Gilkey) and science (Francisco Ayala, G. Brent Dalrymple, Stephen Jay Gould, and Carl Sagan). The state's witnesses were creationists associated with the Geoscience Research Institute, Loma Linda University, California (Harold Coffin, Ariel Roth), and the Creation Research Society, Ann Arbor, Michigan (Wayne Friar, Margaret Helder, Donald Chittick, Robert Gentry). Its “star” witness, at least in the eyes of the press, was Chandra Wickramasinghe, University College of Wales. The article considers the Russian printing in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region (China, Japan, Korea, USA, etc.). The author offers the review of literature published in Russian in these countries, basing on the materials of the Russian North-East Asian collection of Hamilton Library of the University of Hawaii (Honolulu, USA), which is one of the best collections in the world on this subject. The article reports on the history of the Russian collection and its creators. The author discusses the terms “Russian book Diaspora” (publishing emigrant activities within the same country — China, Japan, USA, etc.) and “Russian book community” (publishing activities of people from Russia within the same city, such as Harbin, Shanghai, Tokyo; organizations or groups of individuals, etc.). Special attention is paid to the bibliographic description of this collection, which was first published in 2002 in the publishing house of the Russian State Library “Pashkov Dom” (“Russian print in China, Japan and Korea: Catalogue of the collection of Hamilton Library of the University of Hawaii”) and reprinted in the expanded version in 2016 under the title “Russian print in the Asia-Pacific region” (in 4 parts). The article also reports on other foreign collections that contain emigrant publications, including those printed in the countries of the Asia-Pacific region (the libraries of the University of California in Berkeley, the Hoover Institute for war, revolution and peace, and the Museum of Russian culture in San Francisco). The author presents the data on the work of scientific centre of the University of Hawaii for the study of the USSR / Russia “Soviet Union in Pacific Asia Rim”. The article analyses international cooperation of the University of Hawaii library with Russian libraries, in particular, its relations with the libraries of the Russian Far East. The author describes the project of the University of Hawaii Library to create the electronic library catalogue with complete bibliographic and historical information about each edition of the collection and to expand the exchange of literature and information.

Objective:To present the Mobile Toolbox (MTB), comprised of an expandable library of cognitive and other tests, including adapted versions of NIH Toolbox® measures. The MTB provides a complete research platform for app creation, study management, data collection, and data management. We will describe the MTB project and MTB research platform and demonstrate examples of assessments.Participants and Methods:MTB is the product of an NIH-funded, multi-institutional effort involving Northwestern University, Sage Bionetworks, Penn State, University of California San Francisco, University of California San Diego, Emory University, and Washington University. The MTB assessment library is a dynamic repository built upon Sage Bionetworks mobile health platform. All MTB measures are created or adapted for a mobile interface using iOS and Android smartphones. Guided by the principles of open science, many components are open source to allow researchers and developers to integrate externally developed tests, including supplemental scales (e.g., passively collected contextual factors) assessing variables such as mood and fatigue that might influence cognitive test performance.Results:The current MTB library includes eight core cognitive tests based on well-established neuropsychological measures: two language tasks (Spelling and Word Meaning), two executive functioning tasks (Arrow Matching and Shape-Color Sorting), an associative memory task (Faces and Names), an episodic memory task (Arranging Pictures), a working memory task (Sequences) and a processing speed task (Numbers and Symbols). Additional cognitive assessments from other popular test libraries including the International Cognitive Ability Resource (ICAR), Cognitive Neuroscience Test Reliability and Clinical Applications for Schizophrenia (CNTRACS) and Test My Brain are currently being implemented, as are non-cognitive measures from the NIH Toolbox Emotion Battery and the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS). The MTB library includes measures suitable for use in research studies incorporating point-in-time and burst designs as well as ecological momentary assessment (EMA).Conclusions:The MTB was created to address many of the scientific, practical, and technical challenges to cognitive assessment by capitalizing on advances in technology measurement and cognitive research. Initial psychometric evaluation of measures has been performed, and additional clinical validation is underway in studies with persons at risk for cognitive impairment or Alzheimer’s disease (AD), diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or AD, Parkinson’s disease, and HIV-associated Neurocognitive Disorders. Calculation of norms and reliable change indicators is in progress. The MTB is currently available to beta testers with public release planned for Summer, 2023. Clinical researchers will be able to use the MTB system to design smartphone-based test batteries, deploy and manage mobile data collection in their research studies, and aggregate and analyze results in the context of large-scale norming data.

Richmond, California, a small industrial center north of Oakland and just east of San Francisco, expanded from a prewar population of 23,000 to more than 100,000 permanent residents in 1942. While Henry J. Kaiser's shipbuilding corporation advertised for—and city leaders sought—white skilled labor, military realities and expanding Allied production needs encouraged the hiring of unskilled African American, indigenous, and Chinese American men and women in unprecedented numbers. While the early struggles of workers to find housing and adequate services in Richmond and the East Bay more broadly have been clearly documented by historians, a legacy of continued substandard housing and services disproportionately affected minority workers and their families. Redlined, or denied rental applications because of race through legal policy and unofficial neighborhood agreements, minority workmen and women disproportionately remained in substandard housing even after the construction of federally funded housing units. Exposed to industrial pollutants, urban waste, and human effluent despite the efforts of both humanitarian-minded industrialists and local, state, and federal government officials, these minority groups faced racial and class-based challenges during World War II home front production, which have been overshadowed by the triumphant image of Rosie the Riveter and the total war victory of that “greatest generation.” Research in the Bancroft Library, the Richmond Museum, and other archival databases demonstrates how public contracts became sources of private money for industrialists, leading to the development of facilities that public funds could not support, and thereby reducing the quality of life for minority residents.

During a visit in the summer 1970, Jacques Hymans, professor of History at San Francisco State Univeisity, found discarded papers strewn over the floor of an abandoned European-style house at Mushenge (Nsheng), the capital of the Kuba kingdom, zone Mweka, West Kasai, Democratic Republic of Congo. He salvaged them and then kept them at home. After his death Ms Kelley Hymans gave the papers to the collections of Memorial Library of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. To this a notebook, which Wisconsin obtained through the good offices of Professor Mary Douglas, has been added. This contains a census of the capital for 1939-40 carried out by Jules Lene (Lyeen) as tribute collector for the Kuba king.Since early colonial times the Kuba people were well-known in Europe for their sculpture and their artistic textiles, and because they formed a single kingdom headed by a “divine” king. This was also the only territory in the Belgian Congo where “indirect administration” was officially practiced after 1920. Under such circumstances it is not surprising that the Kuba capital Nsheng, known as Mushenge, eventually became a minor tourist attraction for amateurs of their arts. After independence, travel in Congo became difficult and the prestige of Mushenge declined, but some of its fascination remained, and Hymans was one of the persons still attracted to it. His last visit to Mushenge occurred in 1970, not long after the death of king Bop Mabinc maKyeen. It is on that occasion that he salvaged the papers now in Madison.

Fue el primer catedrático estable que tuvo la disciplina en Valencia desde 1932. Cuando llega, es un profesor formado en la filosofía del derecho y que había realizado algunas reflexiones sobre la teoría del Estado desde perspectivas históricas y clásicas. His eight and a half years in Valencia show an intense activity: he was the director of the college “Luis Vives”; he participated intensely in the academic life of the faculty; he promoted an interdisciplinary seminar on social sciences focused on sociology and political science, whose main currents in Europe and America he began to introduce; he created a large library on these matters and encouraged a first group of disciples; etc. The present study shows all this activity, as well as a description of the main features of the professor’s personality, such as his political and personal tolerance, his vigorous intelectual personality, characterized by a radical critical attitude, his scepticism bordering on pessimism and, above all, his strong vocation towards teaching, which led him to be defined as “a master in an age of bosses”.Keywords: Francoist university, Murillo Ferrol, political law, political science, sociology.

The Postgraduate Medical Education Office at the University of Toronto has implemented a range of faculty development initiatives targeted at supporting the full implementation of CanMEDS roles and competencies in the day to day learning, teaching and evaluation of residents across the highly distributed postgraduate medicine training programs. In October 2005, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) released a revised version of the CanMEDS roles. In June 2006, the RCPSC accreditation standards for postgraduate medicine changed some standards which result in an increased expectation of implementation of the CanMEDS roles in teaching and evaluation of residency programs. From 2005 to 2007, there have been numerous initiatives by the Postgraduate Medical Education Office to support the understanding and implementation of the CanMEDS roles into the learning, evaluation and outcomes of postgraduate training at the University of Toronto. The PGME Office supported the ‘CanMEDSification’ or integration of the CanMEDS framework by: 1) Supporting the development of teacher/faculty teaching and evaluation resources; 2) Providing faculty development in the understanding of these competencies; 3) Providing explicit program feedback through the Internal Review process The CanMEDS roles have been widely integrated into teaching and evaluation at the University of Toronto. The high attendance rates at workshops and positive workshop evaluations indicate the value of centralized faculty development initiatives and also indicate an increasing confidence in using CanMEDS. Abstract Purpose/Objective: There is a need for innovative methods to provide high-quality care to vulnerable populations in an effort to reduce disparities. This is particularly important for women facing a new breast cancer diagnosis. The purpose of the present research was to investigate what social determinants may play a role in the existing disparities impacting adherence to care recommendations in communities with poor access to primary care and higher rates of morbidity and mortality. This study characterized adherence with breast health follow-up care in a diverse population of patients where inequalities exist that may negatively impact adherence to treatment recommendations. The objective of the study was to characterize factors associated with adherence to treatment among women with newly diagnosed breast cancer. Materials/Methods: Women diagnosed with stage I through IV breast cancer treated at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville between 01/01/2014 and 12/31/2019 were included in the sample. Patterns of adherence were categorized using machine learning methods with data derived from the electronic medical record and the UF Health Jacksonville Tumor registry. Age, race, and Area Deprivation Index (ADI) state rank in 2019 as a disparity proxy were used to build a machine learning model and classify compliance to treatment. Included patients had a diagnostic procedure that identified breast cancer. Compliance to treatment was fulfilled if the patient received surgery following diagnostic confirmation. A machine learning model was used to stratify patients by risk of non-adherence to treatment following a diagnostic procedure. The models were evaluated using their area under the curve (AUC). Results: A total of 6,951 women were included, 629 who were adherent and 6322 non-adherent patients with breast cancer. The average age of the participants was 61.4 years, (Standard Deviation = 12.8 years). The majority of patients were Black (48%) or Caucasian (45%), 2% were Asian, and 5% were Other races. Payer type at diagnosis showed 45% had Medicare, 30% had commercial insurance, 17% were covered by Medicaid, 7% were charity, and 1% had other sources of pay. Most women were diagnosed with stage III breast cancer. Of 346 patients who received surgery that data was available, 127 (36.7%) had surgery within 30 days of diagnosis, 102 (29.5%) between 31 and 60 days, and 37 (10.7%) between 61 and 90 days. Fifteen models were compared using the PyCaret Python library. The ADI appeared as the most important factor to predict adherence in the model, followed by race and characterized by an AUC of 0.63. Conclusion: Our clinic treats predominantly more women diagnosed with biologically aggressive and advanced breast cancer especially in young African American population. The role social conditions play that precipitate and perpetuate health care disparities were investigated to determine their impact on adherence to treatment. At our safety net hospital, over one third were able to undergo surgery within 30 days of diagnosis. The ADI appeared as the most important feature to predict adherence, followed by race. This demonstrated the necessity to better understand the relation between socio-economical determinants and care received by patients. A more detailed description of the patients’ circumstances, such as access to transport, proximity of the hospital, and insurance status may further improve the model. There is a need for innovative methods of providing quality health care to vulnerable populations. Machine learning models can be used to stratify patients by risk of non-adherence to diagnostic follow-up and treatment following a diagnosis of breast cancer. Future research needs to move from identification of non-adherence risk factors to implementation of interventions to improve breast cancer outcomes. Increased expression of ERG (ETS-related gene), a proto-oncogene within the ETS (erythroblast transformation specific) family, is associated with an unfavorable clinical outcome in AML patients. A mechanism for ERG over-expression is ERG amplification. ERG amplification is present in 4-6% of adult AML. This study investigates the genetic profile of ERG-amplified AML by assessment of genomic copy number changes and mutational status of AML-related genes and how this correlates to treatment response and overall outcome. Currently copy number analysis is not recommended by ELN or WHO as a diagnostic standard in AML. An institutional retrospective review of 205 adult AML cases from 2015 to 2018 provided two cohorts: a discovery cohort and control cohort. The discovery cohort includes 11 cases (4%) with ERG amplification. All cases in the discovery cohort include either TP53 mutation and/or loss/LOH of 17p. Thus, we developed a control cohort of 39 cases with TP53 abnormalities without ERG amplifications to determine the role TP53 plays in the observed outcomes. The 179 adult AML cases from the TCGA public database comprises the validation cohort, which incorporates both copy number and molecular sequencing data. Approximately 4% of AML cases in the TCGA dataset show ERG amplification. For our discovery and control cohorts, genomic DNA was extracted (Maxwell, Promega, Madison, WI) from fresh bone marrow aspirates. Copy number/LOH analysis was performed using the CytoSNP microarray (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Sequence variants were evaluated in hotspot regions of 49 genes using the ThunderBolts Myeloid Panel library preparation (RainDance Technologies, Billerica, MA) and paired-end sequencing (MiSeq, Illumina, San Diego, CA). Alignment and variant calling was performed with MiSeq Reporter (Illumina) and NextGene (Soft Genetics, State College, PA) and sequences were annotated using VarSeq (Golden Helix, Bozman, MT). SNP microarray analysis of the discovery cohort revealed a distinct pattern of complex cytogenetics including chromothripsis, TP53 loss/LOH and loss of 5q. Molecular sequencing was available for 10 of 11 patients. All specimens analyzed for mutational status demonstrated TP53 loss of function mutations. The majority of cases (9/11) demonstrated complete loss of function of TP53 by mutation in conjunction with a "second hit" in the form of loss due to deletion or LOH of 17p. These nine patients failed to achieve any response with chemotherapy with a median survival time of 3.8 months. The two surviving patients had a single TP53 mutation with an intact second allele. Both of these patients are post-allogeneic stem cell transplant with no evidence of relapse. There is an association of ERG amplification with MDS as 8 of the 11 patients transformed from very-high risk MDS. The interaction between ERG and TP53 allows one to predict treatment response and outcomes based on the presence or absence of an intact TP53 allele. Within the control group, there were no significant differences in survival or response to treatment based on number of intact TP53 alleles. The validation cohort of TCGA patients confirmed the strong positive correlation between ERG amplification and TP53 mutations. There were 8 cases with ERG amplification. Of these, 6 cases had a similar genetic pattern found in the discovery cohort including TP53 mutations, loss of 5q and complex cytogenetics. The median overall survival (OS) of this cohort of ERG amplified + TP53 mutation was 2.5 months. ERG amplification classifies a high-risk population of AML detected by copy number/LOH analysis with a distinct genetic signature including loss of 5q, complex cytogenetics including chromothripsis and loss of function TP53 mutation. The successive loss of the second TP53 allele in the setting of ERG amplification identifies a subset of patients with resistance to cytarabine and a very poor prognosis. These patients are unlikely to benefit from cytotoxic chemotherapy and may have improved outcomes with alternative regimens and/or clinical trial. ERG amplification is associated with AML that transforms from very-high risk MDS. Recognizing these patients before transforming to AML could allow for early transplant. This high-risk subgroup is currently un-recognized by standard cytogenetics and genetic mutation profiling; therefore, we recommend that copy number/LOH analysis become part of the standard diagnostic testing for MDS and AML. Increasingly, research confirms that teacher and teaching quality are the most powerful predictors of student success. In short, principals ensure higher student achievement by assuring better teaching. To do this, effective administrators have a new teacher induction program available for all newly hired teachers, which then seamlessly becomes part of the lifelong, sustained professional development program for the district or school. What keeps a good teacher are structured, sustained, intensive professional development programs that allow new teachers to observe others, to be observed by others, and to be part of networks or study groups where all teachers share together, grow together, and learn to respect each other’s work.ResumoEste artigo apresenta escolas e distritos escolares com programas bem sucedidos de indução, todos facilmente replicáveis. Abstract Introduction Immunosuppressive therapy (IST) yields durable hematologic improvement (HI) in a subset of patients (pts) with lower risk MDS. Age, HLA-DR15+, and duration of transfusion dependence are the strongest independent clinical variables predictive for response. We investigated the impact of somatic gene mutations on response to IST in lower risk MDS pts. Methods MDS pts who received ATG +/- CSA were identified at the Moffitt Cancer Center. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) IST response model was calculated for each pt. Next Generation sequencing (NGS) for somatic gene mutations was conducted using DNA extracted from archived BM prior to therapy. All pts underwent mutation analysis by a 49 myeloid gene panel. The library was generated with the ThunderBolt (RainDance Technologies, Billerica, MA) and sequenced on a MiSeq instrument (Illumina, San Diego, CA). Alignment and variant calling was performed with NextGene (Soft Genetics, State College, PA). Results Sixty-six pts treated with ATG +/- CSA were identified. Median age was 61 and the majority of pts had IPSS lower risk disease with favorable risk karyotype. Median time to initiation of IST was 1 year. All pts received ATG (60% rabbit (r-ATG); 32% equine (e-ATG)), and CSA was used in 60% of pts. Overall frequency of HI was 42% with a trend favoring e-ATG vs. r-ATG (52% vs. 39%, p=0.09). Erythroid HI was evaluable in 30 pts with 60% responding, neutrophil improvement was evaluable in 15 pts and 39% responded, while platelet improvement was evaluable in 18 pts with 57% responding. Six of 18 (33%) pts with pancytopenia experienced trilineage response. Mean time from ATG to next therapy was 12 mo (median of 7.7 mo). Neither presence of an LGL clone, hypocellular BM or fibrosis, HLA DR15, trisomy 8, nor age influenced response to IST. Pts classified as IPSS-R Very high or high risk were unresponsive (n= 5), whereas 10 of 19 pts (53%) with intermediate risk responded. Poor risk IPSS karyotype was associated with a trend for lower response rate when compared to intermediate and good risk (25% vs. 41% vs. 44%; p=0.6). The response rate based on the NIH IST model was 38% for low response probability category pts and 45% for high probability category (p=0.5). Response rate to IST was higher if administered within 2 years from diagnosis, with an HI rate of 48% vs. 33% when treated after 2 years (p=0.04). Pts who received ATG as first line treatment or after lenalidomide had a trend for higher response rates than those treated after azacitidine (46%,75%, and 25% respectively). Addition of CSA significantly improved HI rate (51% vs. 27% for ATG alone, p=0.02). Transformation to AML occurred in 10 pts, 7% of responders and 24% of non-responders (p=0.08). Median OS was 67.2 mo with no significant difference based on IST response. Among 40 pts evaluated by NGS, 20 (50%) had at least one demonstrable somatic mutation (SM) and 9 pts (22.5%) had two or more SM. SF3B1 was the most common SM detected (n=9, 22.5%), followed by ASXL-1 (n=7, 17.5%), TET-2 (n= 5, 12.5%), and STAG2, EZH-2 and ZRSR2 (2 pts each, 5%), and 1 pt each with IDH-1, KDM6A, SETBP1, RAD2, GNAS or GATA-2. Absence of a SM was associated with a higher response to IST (70% vs. 40%, p=0.16), whereas number of SM (1 vs. 2+) did not influence response. The presence of an SF3B1 mutation was a significantly associated with IST nonresponse (1/9 SF3B1 SM, 11% vs. 21/31 WT, 68%; p=0.01). All pts with SF3B1 SM had ring sideroblasts >15% (RS) by morphology and the corresponding HI rate was 20% among pts with RS vs 50% for those without RS, p=0.09. Median OS in pts with an SF3B1 SM was 111 mo vs. 54 mo in SF3B1 WT (p=0.016). The two pts with EZH-2 and the single pt with WT-1 S achieved HI. Mean duration of response was 12 mo among pts with no SM vs. 9 mo in those harboring a SM (p=0.09). Rate of AML transformation among pts with a SM other than SF3B1 was higher in pts without SM (4/11 pts, 36%vs. 1/20, 5%; p =0.023, with a corresponding reduced median OS (52 mo vs. 96, p=0.24). Conclusions These findings support an improved response rate to ATG when administered in combination with CSA, and early in the disease course. The presence of an SF3B1 mutation adversely influences response to IST, suggesting a non-immunologic pathogenesis in this molecularly defined subset. The presence of non-SF3B1 somatic mutations adversely affects response duration and probability of AML transformation. SM should be considered in selection of IST in lower risk MDS patients. The concepts of expectation, anomaly, and unexpectedness that Philip J. Deloria developed in Indians in Unexpected Places (2004) have shaped a wide range of interdisciplinary research projects. In the process, those terms have changed the ways it is possible to think about American Indian representation, cosmopolitanism, and agency. This article revisits my own work in this area and provides a short survey of related scholarship in order to reassess the concept of unexpectedness in the present moment and to consider the ways my deployment of it might change in order to better meet the needs of my students. To begin a process of engaging intergenerational perspectives on this subject, the article concludes with an interview with Dr. Jacob E. Perea, dean emeritus of the Graduate College of Education at San Francisco State University and a veteran of the 1969 student strikes that founded the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University.

Specifically explored was the presence or absence of requests in the grant applications for funds that can be used to support school library programs and employ and/or provide professional development funding for licensed school librarians. The purpose was to provide a description of decision-making and planning at the level of state administrators who functioned in the context of SEA and Local Education Agency organizations and were responsible for writing 2017 ESSA plans. Collected was data in four phases. The findings of this research informed a new model that illustrate sources of power relationships among legitimate interests in 2017 ESSA planning. A second proposed model can be applied to all types of libraries and their decision-making and planning. Both models can be tested in future research studies.
