The following is an exploration of the use of epideictic rhetoric strategies in nineteenth-century conduct manuals, Sarah Stickney Ellis’s The Women of England: Their Social Duties and Domestic Habits, and Harriet Martineau’s Household Education. In examining the rhetoric of the conduct manuals, this researcher has identified the audience, the rhetorical situation, the exigence of that situation, and the use of phronisis, areti, and euonia by both authors. Because the rhetoric of the conduct manual has not been discussed in current critical perspectives, this research is a starting point for further study. The different types of rhetorical strategies used by each author are the focal points used to uncover how epideictic rhetoric can be understood beyond the restrictions of funeral orations and ceremonial speeches. The primary critical research used in this project has been that focused on epideictic rhetoric and the conduct manuals themselves.

This thesis explored prosocial behaviour from a developmental and life-course perspective. In doing so, I fill two gaps in understanding in the role of prosocial behaviour in the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. First, I explore how a developmental and life-course understanding of prosocial behaviour may shed light on whether prosocial behaviour is a facilitator or measurable outcome of the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. Second, I explore how the social support perceptions of adolescents are related to their prosocial and conduct problem behaviour. Addressing a gap in knowledge on whether prosocial and conduct problem behaviour are driven by the same underlying factors. Ultimately, this thesis answers the overarching question––why should developmental and life course criminologists explore prosocial behaviour? I explored this question through three studies that provide insight into the interplay of prosocial and conduct problem behaviour. The data for each of the three studies in my thesis were from the scales and sub-scales that form a part of the Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC) questionnaires (N= 4969; Female: 2447; Males: 2536). The participants were aged four to fifteen. In study one, I explored the implications of different analytic approaches to empirically examining prosocial behaviour within a developmental and life-course criminology perspective. To meet the aim of this research a group based-trajectory model and a growth curve model of prosocial behaviour were estimated and compared. I examined the development of prosocial behaviour, by applying the two conventional approaches to empirically studying the development of antisocial behaviour. The findings of this research provide insight into where investigations of prosocial behaviour may conceptually fit within the developmental and lifecourse perspective. Also allowing for a deeper assessment of how different analytic approaches impact on the developmental and life-course understanding of prosocial behaviour development. The results of study one indicated, that for this sample of children and adolescents, the developmental trajectory of prosocial behaviour (from age 4 – 15 years), may best be described as a single trajectory with variations around this trajectory. Conceptually, this positions prosocial behaviour development outside the realm of categorical explanations of behavioural development. The results did indicate that the development of prosocial behaviour is relatively stable with many children and adolescents maintaining their rank-ordering. Moreover, there was also evidence for more than three distinguishable trajectories of prosocial behaviour. Most of these trajectories, however, did not vary in shape and there was an absence of a distinct group of children and adolescents who were very low in prosocial behaviour. Thus, these findings suggest that the development of prosocial behaviour is a complex process that may not be captured taxonomically. In this sense the findings support the notion that there is a link between age-graded factors, such as socio-cognitive maturity, and prosocial behaviour, but that these associated factors drive variation around a single, normative developmental pattern of prosocial behaviour. In study two, I expanded on the findings in study one by exploring how changes in prosocial behaviour and conduct problems are causally related over time. These investigations contribute to developmental and life-course criminology theory, an understanding of the role of prosocial behaviour in the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. Many studies have explored the relationship between prosocial behaviour and conduct problems, however, very few studies, consider the longitudinal and causal direction of this relationship. Without a thorough understanding of the longitudinal and causal relationship between prosocial behaviour and conduct problems, it cannot be assumed that interventions that aim to foster prosocial behaviour will also decrease conduct problems. The aims of study two were met by exploring a generalised cross-lagged panel model. This approach controls for fixed and occasion effects to allow for examination of short-term and long-term bi-directional patterns of change. The results indicated that whilst prosocial and conduct problems have a moderate amount of shared variance, there were differences in the bidirectional relationships of these behaviours. Specifically, there were only cumulative, longterm effects of prosocial behaviour change on conduct problems. These findings revealed no short-term predictive effect of conduct problems in one time period on prosocial behaviour in the next time period. There was, however, a short-term predictive relationship of prosocial behaviour in one time period on conduct problems in the next period. Specifically, higher prosocial behaviour in one time period predicted lower conduct problem behaviour in the next period. Despite the lack of a short-term predictive effect of conduct problems on prosocial behaviour, cumulative changes in conduct problems, were strong enough to influence reductions in prosocial behaviour over time. This pattern also held for the long-term impact of prosocial behaviour on conduct problems. These findings suggest that although conduct problems may have a cumulative negative impact on prosocial behaviour, the strength of the short and longterm influence of prosocial behaviour on conduct problem behaviour may be enough to overcome this long-term impact. The first two studies in my thesis revealed important insights into the general development of prosocial behaviour and how prosocial behaviour may influence and be influenced by conduct problems. In study three, I explored how the social support perceptions of early adolescents relate to both prosocial and conduct problem behavioural outcomes. These investigations are important as previous research provides some evidence to suggest that social support may be leveraged for strength-based interventions that both increase prosocial behaviour and decrease conduct problem behaviour. Other findings also indicate, however, that relative to adolescents who engage in prosocial behaviour, social support interventions may not be successful for adolescents who also engage in conduct problem behaviour, as they are less likely to perceive social support in their important contexts. To meet the aims of study three, I explored a multivariate multiple regression to account for any covariation between prosocial behaviour and conduct problems and provide a comparison of how the social support perceptions of early adolescents may differently predict their prosocial and conduct problem behaviour. The findings of these explorations, indicated that adolescents’ perceptions of social support from their mothers predicted conduct problems and prosocial behaviour, as did perceived support within the school environment. There was no significant association between adolescents’ perceptions of peer social support and either their prosocial or conduct problem behaviour. Adolescents’ perceptions of peer social support, however, did moderate the relationship between adolescents’ perceptions of social support from caring adults in their school and their prosocial behaviour. Adolescents who perceived high levels of support from caring adults in their school environment also reported low levels of peer support, but this corresponded to high levels of prosocial behaviour. Overall, I contribute to a developmental and life-course criminology understanding of the interplay of prosocial behaviour and conduct problems. I found that there was variability in the development of prosocial behaviour over time. This variability may be captured by a theoretical framework, such as Loeber’s developmental pathways theory, that explores the sequencing of the behaviour of children and adolescents. My finding that prosocial behaviour may facilitate the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour also provides empirical evidence for Loeber’s development pathways theory. Further, my results have practical implications, expanding on the existing evidence that guides strength-based developmental crime prevention approaches. The strengthening of social support provided to adolescents by their mothers and caring adults in the school environment may foster the deceleration of conduct problem behaviour. Future research should focus on extending the understanding of how prosocial behaviour may relate to specific types of conduct problem behaviour and other factors that may both increase prosocial behaviour and decrease conduct problem behaviour (e.g., personality). Developmental and life-course criminologists already have a comprehensive framework for understanding the development of conduct problem behaviour. My thesis contributes an understanding prosocial behaviour from this perspective. Thus, not only should developmental and life-course criminologists explore prosocial behaviour, they are well placed to do so.

Conduct disorder (CD) is a psychiatric syndrome in childhood and adolescence that is one of the most common childhood disorders with continuously increasing prevalence but uncertain pathogenesis. We performed a genome-wide, family-based association study of CD using P2BAT/FBAT software. The data is gathered from Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA) and International Multi-Center ADHD Genetics Project (IMAGE). Using COGA data, we identified 20 markers which showed suggestive associations (p<10-3) with CD. Nine of them are located in known genes. Two genes, ADAM10 and CAMK2A, which had been reported associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder, and depression, were of more concern. Using IMAGE sample, our results were well replicated. This study identified several CD associated genetic variants, especially two novel candidate genes. These findings may serve as a resource for replication in other populations to elucidate the potential role of these genetic variants in CD.

The thesis describes the everyday life of victims of sexual violence in Germany, based upon the qualitative study of in-depth interviews. By means of the grounded analysis of their action system of practical coping with life on a daily basis - the Conduct of Everyday Life - five principle patterns have been detected, which characterize the victims' common practices and everyday strategies: hyperactivity, retreat, time-out, disclosure and commitment. Moreover, the fragility of their lives depends on paradoxes which reduce their freedom of choice. They represent social symptoms which influence both the individual and social visibility and invisibility of sexual violence.

Life scientists have increasingly been asked to incorporate a dual use responsibility in their research conduct. In this thesis, different aspects of what constitutes a reasonable responsibility in terms of avoiding harmful misuse of research for biological weapon purposes have been explored. The first study investigated the claim that scientists have a dual use responsibility, and also outlined some of its possible content. Criteria for what may constitute preventable harm were used to analyze some proposed obligations in the field, and it was concluded that reasonable obligations include: e.g. considering the potential negative implications of one’s research and reporting activities of concern. In the second study, the conditions for a Precautionary Principle (PP) were explored and applied to the dual use research context. The study found that the main conditions of the PP frequently appear in present discussions and formulations of life scientists’ responsibility. It was also concluded that the PP is applicable to the dual use field and that it is meaningful and useful as a normatively guiding principle. The third study suggested an ethics of dissemination, based on the assumption that scientists have a responsibility to occasionally constrain the dispersion of their research findings. Three core aspects were proposed for an ethics of dual use dissemination. Additionally, to help scientists understand when constraints may be justified, three corresponding conditions for their application were suggested. In the fourth study, the concept of ethical competence was introduced and explored within a dual use context. It was concluded that competence-building is important in the nurturing of individual responsibility and, subsequently, in achieving a culture of dual use responsibility in the life sciences. Finally, the discussion on ethical competence was included in a proposed ethic of deliberation, in which various stakeholders in the dual use debate are conceived to participate in communicative processes. It was argued that spaces for deliberative activities should be institutionalized by the scientific community to ensure structural opportunities for individuals to both assume responsibility and share it. Moreover, it was argued that deliberation can constitute a cornerstone of responsible dual use governance.

ABF-1 is a human class ll basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor that is expressed predominately in EBV immortalized and activated B lymphocytes. A human cell line was stably transfected with a tetracycline regulated ABF-1 expression vector. The cell line revealed tight regulation of ABF-1 expression following stable incorporation of the vector into the genomic DNA. Upon induction of ABF-1 expression, the cell line exhibited a dramatic growth rate decrease. In order to monitor genes regulated by ABF-1, cells were collected both before and after induced ABF-1 expression and subjected to a microarray analysis. Early interpretations of the microarray data support the findings that ABF-1 may be regulating gene expression in a manner that facilitates withdrawal from the cell cycle.

Drawing critically on a line of interpretation opened by Wilhelm Hennis more than 20 years ago, this thesis is concerned with Max Weber's notion of 'human type' (Typus Mensch, Menschentum) and the way in which it enables to pose a philosophical question - what can leading a truly human life in the modern age mean? - from the perspective of social and cultural sciences. To that end, it brings out Weber's framework for the analysis of the inner and external shaping of the human type as well as for the consideration of the possibility of life conduct, examining the inner momentum of the life orders in which human beings deploy their actions, and not merely their 'external' arrangements. Weber's theoretical construct of the life orders and value spheres (especially in the 'Intermediate Reflection') and his analysis of the workings of the rationality of particular spheres of human action (as first and most completely exposed in the 'music study') are at the core of this framework. By suggesting that Weber was critical of - and went far beyond - analyses of the constraining of personality by 'external conditions', I seek to provide an account of his analysis of the manufacturing of adaptation. I show in particular that such fashioning, far from being only the result of the dynamics of rationality pervading all spheres of human action in different ways, rather arises in the interplay between such dynamics and the irrationalities it triggers, including in the rationalised life orders. The adapted human being is not only a carrier of needs or interests, but also of affects and even values: adaptation mobilises 'life'. To such external and inner 'forming' of life, Weber opposed another kind of modern inner vocational connection to specific worldly value spheres. Thus the analysis of the inner momentum of the life orders and value spheres also crucially served Weber's exploration of the possibility of 'life conduct' in opposition to letting life 'slip by' and merely be 'formed'. The thesis has an important comparative strand, at three different levels. First, it sets out Weber's notion of science of reality against the background of the epistemological debates at the turn of the 20th century. This highlights the divide between Weber's conception of the role of science in a disenchanted world and other conceptions, which tended to be captured by philosophies of life. Secondly, specific comparisons are carried out, e.g. between Weber's and Troeltsch's analysis of the coining of a new Menschentum at the time of the Reformation. Finally I provide a more systematic comparison between Weber's and Simmel's analysis of the fate of the modern human being, highlighting the contrast between Weber's affirmation of the possibility of a life conduct that confronts and transforms the world and Simmel's self-referential notion of personality. Drawing on existing encompassing interpretations and on more specialised scholarship, the thesis above all relies on my own textual analysis and interpretation across Weber's writings (including the music study, the methodological guidelines for the survey on industrial labour, the political writings and the writings on academia), Simmel's mature philosophical writings, as well as Troeltsch's Social doctrines of the Christian Churches. The analysis of Dilthey's and Rickert's philosophy of respectively the human and cultural sciences relies on a more selective reading of their major works and on existing scholarship. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part I contextualises the notion of 'science of reality' and exposes the main features of Weber's notion of human type. Part II addresses the deployment of Weber's approach in the modern life orders; whilst part III explores its prolongations on the plane of life conduct and vocation, which it compares with Simmel's notions of objectivation of 'lived experience' and personality.

This study was designed to examine: (1) the extent to which cheating occurs in fundamentalist Christian colleges; (2) the attitudes of fundamentalist Christian college students toward cheating; (3) attitudes of fundamentalist Christian college students toward cheating among their peers; (4) the kinds of cheating practices of fundamentalist Christian college students; (5) the degree to which students engage in neutralizing behavior to justify cheating; (6) differences in cheating behaviors according to gender; (7) differences in cheating behaviors according to ethnicity; and (8) differences in cheating behaviors according to the length of duration of Christian commitment. Based upon the responses of 337 students attending 3 different Christian colleges, it was concluded that: (1) most Christian fundamentalist students do not engage in cheating; (2) respondents believe that each of 17 self-reported cheating behaviors are serious forms of cheating; (3) respondents are unlikely to report cheating among peers; (4) plagiarism is the most common cheating behavior; (5) most respondents justify cheating on the basis of the workload at school and the pressure to obtain good grades; (6) there are no differences in cheating behavior according to gender; (7) there are differences in cheating behavior according to groups; and (8) most respondents do not cheat regardless of the self-reported duration of Christian commitment.

We all want to live good lives, but due to the difficulty involved, few of us ever succeed. We usually either fail in our attempts to live well or remain with our safer, and less worthwhile, options. In spite of this, there has been little, if any, investigation of the role that difficulty plays in our attempts to live well, and thus in our conceptions of the good life. Within the field of the good life, philosophers tend to acknowledge the fact that good lives are difficult to live, and leave it at that. Since we must all face the difficulty of living well, the lack of analysis of the implications of difficulty seems a glaring oversight. In order to redress this, I explore the role that difficulty plays in two requirements for living well, namely achievement and reflection. Firstly, I examine the relationship between effort and achievement. I argue that difficulty just is the requirement of effort, and that it is required in order for our achievements to be meaningful and for us to value them. Secondly, I look at the relationship between failure and reflection. I argue that reflection on our failures can lead us to knowledge that helps us to live well and that we would not usually come to if we did not fail. Finally, I look at the roles of effort and failure in some accounts of the good life and I draw on psychological research and theory to provide support for my conclusions about the positive effects of effort. I conclude by examining the implications of reducing difficulty for the future of humankind.

Due to a living and learning work environment that is filled with role ambiguity, resident assistants often handle situations that require clear and competent ethical decision making. The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the various aspects of ethics that affect the lives and job performance of resident assistants. Through an examination of the levels of moral development and the ethical issues faced by resident assistants, the intentionality and the quality of values education for resident assistants is hoped to be improved. One hundred and seventeen resident assistants at a mid-sized, Midwestern, public university created the sample population. All 117 participants completed the survey resulting in a 100 percent return rate.Resident assistants at Ball State University do not have a unique profile of moral development. As a group they tend to make decisions based upon the established rules of society rather than individual rights or universal principles. Results from the Defining Issues Test showed that they have a principled morality score of 37.07% in comparison to the standardized mean score for college students of 42.3%. In their work environments, they report situations involving dating or relationship issues as occurring most often. Colleagues dating their residents was perceived as the least serious out of 16 ethical situations. Situations of racial, gender, or religious intolerance were considered quite serious by the resident assistants. Out of the 117 participants, 109 resident assistants reported situations which created personal ethical or moral dilemmas. Dilemmas that included issues of the enforcement of or the belief in housing policies were reported 21 times. Director or staff conflicts involving a variety of situations were reported as an issue by 17 resident assistants. Relationships with residents that are based upon friendship and/or respect along with perceived issues of resident assistant harassment created the third largest category out of 15 categories of moral dilemmas.Resident assistants are paraprofessionals with a great amount of responsibility and are often put in situations which involve unconscious ethical decision making. Suggestions for hiring, training and role modeling are given in order to better meet the needs of resident assistants. Professionals and researchers must continue to examine the areas of moral development and ethical issues because understanding the issues that concern resident assistants is an important step in creating an ethical campus community.

The conduct of young adults has long been a concern in societies. The primary objective of this study was to gain greater understanding of what influences the deviant behavior of young adults in Turkey. Factors assessed in their background included family rituals, self-esteem, religiosity and deviant behavior. It was expected that levels of family rituals, religiosity, self-esteem and other risk factors would be significantly different between incarcerated youth and youth not incarcerated. Overall, these higher levels of family rituals, religiosity, and self-esteem plus lower levels of other risk factors were expected to negatively affect young people's engagement in deviant behavior in Turkey. Walter Reckless' containment theory provided a framework for this study. The non-probability sample of Turkish youths consisted of 205 incarcerated respondents and 200 college students. Each responded to four survey instruments, the Family Rituals Questionnaire, the Culture Free Self-Esteem Inventory, the Religious Background and Behavior Questionnaire, and a Family Information Inventory. Data were gathered cross-sectionally from January through March of 2007. The incarcerated respondents significantly practices less family rituals and had lower levels of religiosity than the college students but they did not differ significantly on self-esteem. Furthermore, overall participation in family rituals was associated with decreased likelihood of committing deviant behavior. Religiosity, which was measured by expression of a God consciousness and performance of formal religious practices, had mixed results. While having a God consciousness decreased the likelihood of committing deviant behavior, performing formal religious practices increased the likelihood of committing deviant behavior. Moreover, higher levels of self-esteem played no significant role in reducing deviant behavior. No significant support was found for Reckless' emphasis on the role of inner containment as an element of social control. However, support was found for the outer containment variable of family rituals playing a significant role in reducing deviant behavior for the respondents. Future research should further explore the role of family rituals, self-esteem and religiosity as well as other relevant risk factors in explaining deviant behavior through longitudinal research designs.

This work addresses issues in the study of gene-environment interaction (GxE) through research of conduct disorder (CD) among adolescents and extends the recent report of significant GxE and subsequent replication studies. A sub-sample of 1,299 individual participants/649 twin pairs and their parents from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent and Behavioral Development was used for whom Monoamine Oxidase A (MAOA) genotype, diagnosis of CD, maternal antisocial personality symptoms, and household neglect were obtained. This dissertation (1) tested for GxE by gender using MAOA and childhood adversity using multiple approaches to CD measurement and model assessment, (2) determined whether other mechanisms would explain differences in GxE by gender and (3) identified and assessed other genes and environments related to the interaction MAOA and childhood adversity. Using a multiple regression approach, a main effect of the low/low MAOA genotype remained after controlling other risk factors in females. However, the effects of GxE were modest and were removed by transforming the environmental measures. In contrast, there was no significant effect of the low activity MAOA allele in males although significant GxE was detected and remained after transformation. The sign of the interaction for males was opposite from females, indicating genetic sensitivity to childhood adversity may differ by gender. Upon further investigation, gender differences in GxE were due to genotype-sex interaction and may involve MAOA. A Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach including a genetic Item Response Theory modeled CD as a trait with continuous liability, since false detection of GxE may result from measurement. In males and females, the inclusion of GxE while controlling for the other covariates was appropriate, but was little improvement in model fit and effect sizes of GxE were small. Other candidate genes functioning in the serotonin and dopamine neurotransmitter systems were tested for interaction with MAOA to affect risk for CD. Main genetic effects of dopamine transporter genotype and MAOA in the presence of comorbidity were detected. No epistatic effects were detected. The use of random forests systematically assessed the environment and produced several interesting environments that will require more thoughtful consideration before incorporation into a model testing GxE.

Under det senaste decenniet har kvinnor gjort ett utträde på arbetsmarknaden. De har gått från att vara hemmafruar till yrkesarbetande. Närmare 1,2 miljoner kvinnor var hemmafruar i Sverige på 1960-talet, idag är de endast 48 000. Jag ville ta reda på vad det innebär att var hemmafru idag för hemmafruarna själva. Jag har utgått från min frågeställning; Vad innebär det att vara hemmafru idag? Hur ser de på förväntningarna som riktas mot dem? Vad finns det för mål och motiv för dessa kvinnor att bli hemmafruar? Hur upplever de sin position som hemmafruar? Jag har genomfört mitt arbete utifrån Grundad teori då jag ville få fatt i vad det innebär för dagens hemmafruar själva utan att utgå från någon bestämd teori. För att få fram detta har jag intervjuat fem kvinnor. Resultatet visade att dagens hemmafru är en kvinna som under en fas i livet har valt att stanna hemma från arbetslivet för att ta hand om sina barn, ett val som de haft ekonomisk möjlighet att välja i kombination med att de upplever att det dem gör har ett värde samt att det är meningsfullt. De har valt en livsföring utifrån det som har ett värde för dem.

This thesis explores conflict and its management among Quakers by probing deeply the dynamics of cultural and social change. This interpretation is based on three months of participant observation, semi-structured interview with informants, and a brief literature review of Quaker literature regarding conflict management. Conflict was examined by revising the model employed by Clifford Geertz to study social change. The model uses the concepts of social structure, culture and self to identify potential areas of conflict among Quakers. Four constructions are identified. The first, 'The Principled Construction of Conflict is based on Quaker principles of conflict and its management found in their formal statements. The 'Conceptual Definitions' come from the informants conscious attempts to define 'conflict.' A 'Folk Construction' is based on the informants informal discussions about conflict. A'Practiced Construction of Conflict' deals with the manner Quakers go about managing conflict in their daily behavior.

Os objetivos do estudo são identificar, compreender e analisar as ações socioeducativas empregadas com os menores infratores pelos funcionários desta Instituição; identificar, compreender e analisar a percepção dos funcionários da instituição socioeducativa acima referida sobre a efetividade destas ações; buscar, com ajuda dos profissionais, possíveis mudanças positivas para a ressocialização. Foi feita uma pesquisa descritiva, exploratória, de natureza qualitativa realizada por meio de entrevistas com os funcionários da instituição em análise. Também foram estudados os seguintes documentos: o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente (1990); o Sistema Nacional de Atendimento Socioeducativo (2006); e as Diretrizes para a Implementação da Medida Socioeducativa de Semiliberdade (2012). O referencial teórico deste estudo é a Sociologia Compreensiva de Max Weber. Abstract: The current study presents as research theme juvenile deliquency and as its object the social and educative re-socialization measures present at a Semi-liberty Unit in the countryside of São Paulo. The objectives of such study are to identify, understand and analyze the social and educative actions used with juvenile transgressors by professionals of this Unit; to identify, understand and analyze their perception of the institute already mentioned in terms of effectiveness of such actions; seek together with these professionals, possible positive changes for re-socialization. It was a descriptive, exploratory qualitative research accomplished by means of interviews with professionals of the institution under analysis. The following documents were also examined: Statute of the Child and Adolescent (1990); National Social Educative Service System (2006); and the Guidelines to the implementation of the partner-educative measure for Semi-liberty (2012). The theoretical framework of this study is Max Weber's Comprehensive Sociology. This research intends to shed light on the difficulties numbered by the professionals and their suggestions for overcoming so that the re-socialization of juvenile transgressors can be successful

The possible relationship between parental perceptions of playfulness and temperament was examined. Parents completed the Behavioral Style Questionnaire and the Child Behaviors Inventory. Children were tested using the Weschsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence to examine the effect of IQ on perceived playfulness. Fathers‘ ratings of playfulness were correlated with paternal ratings of approachability and maternal ratings of persistence. Mothers' ratings of playfulness were correlated with maternal ratings of persistence and adaptability and paternal ratings of persistence. Distractibility, intensity, and threshold were correlated with parental ratings of externality. No correlations were found between parental ratings of playfulness or externality. IQ scores were found to have no significant relationship to parental ratings of playfulness and temperament. Playfulness is a construct distinct from temperament but which can be explained, in part, by temperamental traits which, like externality, detract from the child's propensity to enter into a playful dispositional state. Externality seems to overlap with certain temperament traits which describe the child's propensity to react in particular ways to the context. Future experimental research is needed to assess the contextual influences on playful dispositions. Observational and interview data are also needed to assess whether parental differences in playfulness ratings are attributable to differential perceptions or to contextual variables or to an interaction between the two.

This dissertation is concerned with what it means to live well towards others. It develops a form of everyday ethics that emphasises how existing in the world and being ethical are entwined. To develop this approach to ethics this study employs Alfred Schutz's phenomenological descriptions of everyday world and Emmanuel Levinas's concept of the ethical. The purpose of the thesis is to develop an understanding of ethics that operates at the everyday level of human-to-human contact. This form of ethics is significant in that it indicates that being ethical is an important aspect of human life. My intention is to show that ethics is always more than simply the institution of codes of conduct that govern the way people act. The significance of the thesis is that it contributes both to ways in which ethics can be understood and to the manner in which ethics can be operationalised at an institutional level. My thesis has four specific aims. First, to examine the conditions and characteristics that constitute the everyday world as understood in Alfred Schutz's work. Second, to explore Emmanuel Levinas's understanding of the ethical. My third aim is to synthesise these theorists' ideas through my heuristic device, Echoes of the Other. This device will allow me to extract the conditions for and features of an everyday ethics. My fourth aim is to point to an in situ illustration of this approach to ethics. This will be drawn from my observations at the Western Australian Police Academy. My argument is that synthesising Levinas's and Schutz's ideas will enable the development of an everyday ethics. This will highlight the ways in which ethics functions at the micro levels of human life. This study contributes to approaches to ethics, and specifically, ethics derived from Levinas's ethical relation. This approach can be of use to people interested in ethics, phenomenology, the works of Levinas and Schutz and those concerned with developing ways to live well towards others.

The current study aimed at exploring the potential benefits of integrating process drama, an interactive teaching methodology, into Life Education curriculum on anti-school bullying. The program effectiveness was evaluated through the enhancement in students’ empathy, including both cognitive and affective empathy, helping behavior and tendency as well as their knowledge on the basic concepts of bullying. Data was collected through self-reports. 141 S.2 students were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups, experiencing an anti-bullying intervention program through process drama (experimental) or conventional teaching methods (control). The study found that students in both groups showed enhancement in all three aspects, while the increase in affective empathy and helping tendency of the experimental group was significantly larger than the control group.

Do adolescents of colour really engage in risk-taking behaviours as often generalised by the public? Are they in fact the alcohol, drugs, sex, and violence generation? This study attempts to investigate the conditions influencing the choices adolescents make prior to their engaging in risk-taking behaviours. In the social sciences, concerns over adolescents’ recklessly irresponsible behaviours have deep roots. In 1904 G. Stanley Hall depicted adolescence as misbehaving because of the storms and stresses of the transition from childhood to adulthood. Subsequently, social scientists produced substantial evidence that the storminess of adolescence is largely an over generalisation, which has not been empirically substantiated. In corroboration of this interpretation, this study also indicates that not all adolescents engage in risk-taking behaviour, and those risky individuals do not necessarily engage in all spheres of risk-taking. The majority of the target group only experimented with certain risk behaviours by engaging in them on one occasion only. The specific high school was selected because the researcher knew the learners, as she was an educator there at the time. She was thus reasonably aware of the frequency, the nature and the severity of the risk-taking behaviours of the target group. In general, the most important findings of the study signified a moderate level of participation in risk-taking activities. However, in certain spheres such as cigarette smoking, alcohol usage and sexual intercourse, an extreme participation level was reported. Certain factors such as gender, age, socio-economic conditions, parental (one or both) absence, and the respondents’ attitude towards the specific behaviour, were discovered to have played an influential role in the target group taking risks. Based on the reasons advanced for engaging in risk-taking behaviour, the researcher concluded that the following theories were applicable in explaining the behaviour of the respondents. These theories are the social learning theory, symbolic interactionist theory, social identity, the theory of reasoned action, and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The researcher trusts that this study will assist the reader to understand the complex contributing circumstances that the target group has to contend with in making decisions.

Trata-se de uma pesquisa que tem como tema a interface da maternidade voltada para a homossexualidade lésbica em nuanças que acompanham a dinâmica social das maternidades no limiar do século XXI. Tem como pressuposto que a escolha entre ser ou não ser mãe é um fenômeno que se consolidou no decorrer do século XX e esboçou o processo social de transformações que permitiu às mulheres firmarem-se em suas lutas pela igualdade, às crianças serem vistas como sujeitos e às lésbicas a busca por direitos, o que passou a provocar tensões sociais e políticas dando origens a desafios impensáveis dos quais a Sociologia não está isenta. É uma pesquisa pautada pelos objetivos de realçar formas de maternidade lésbica e de considerar as configurações familiares contemporâneas que se constituem a partir desses novos estatutos sociais. Pretende-se, desse modo, contribuir para o debate sobre questões relativas às maternidades, ao ser lésbica, às configurações familiares de mulheres lésbicas e ampliar a compreensão da dinâmica da transversalidade das igualdades e das diferenças entre as pessoas, sem desconsiderar o que está consolidado por estudos realizados pelas Ciências Sociais nesse campo de pesquisa.
Résumé: Proposé par la Ligne de Recherche, Diversité, Identité et Droits, ce texte traite des réflexions sur le développement d'une recherche qualitative sans que cela empêche le recours à la méthodologie quantitative. Il s'agit d'une recherche sur l'interface de la maternité concernant l'homosexualité lesbienne avec des nuances qui accompagnent la dynamique sociale des faces des maternités au seuil du XXIe siècle. On a comme présupposé que le choix entre être ou ne pas être mère est un phénomène qui s'est consolidé pendant le XXe siècle et cela a ébauché le procès social de transformations aux femmes d'affermir leurs luttes pour l'égalité, aux enfants d'être envisagés comme sujets et aux lesbiennes la recherche des droits ce qui a provoqué des tensions socisles et politiques en créant des enjeux impensables dont la Sociologie n'est pas exempte. Ce travail a pour but mettre en relief les formes de maternité lesbienne et considére les configurations familiales contemporaines qui se contituent à partir de ces nouveaux statuts sociaux. On voudrait donc contribuer au débat sur les questions concernantes aux maternités, â être lesbienne, aux configurations familiales de femmes lesbiennes et élargir la compréhension de la dynamique de la transversalité des égalites et des différences parmi les personnes, en tenant compte de ce qui est consolidé par les études faites dans ce domaine en Sciences Sociales.

This study focuses on exploring the reasons behind dating choices concerning religion and race. Studies report that race is more important than religion in choosing dating partners. Understanding religious and racial dating preferences and choices can help uncover group relations in the larger society. The present study examines the reasons why someone may be willing to date a group outside their religion but not a group outside their race. A pre-interview survey questionnaire was used to locate interview participants. The first 20 respondents who met the specific criteria of being White, single, and a conservative Christian were selected for a qualitative phone interview. To qualify, the respondents needed to be willing to date at least one group that was not Christian, but unwilling to date certain groups outside their race. The interviews were transcribed and the content was analyzed for patterns and themes using the Grounded theory. The results revealed that all the respondents except one were unwilling to date a Black individual and five were unwilling to date any race but White. The least likely to be considered as dating partners for religious groups were the Muslims and atheists. For race, many of the participants viewed Hispanics and Asians as more culturally or physically similar to them than Blacks. The main reasons why the respondents indicated they were willing to date Jewish and agnostic individuals were that they perceived them as similar to themselves in their belief systems. For both religion and race, the respondents were more willing to consider dating groups that were considered to have less stigma in society. The concept of stigma provides a framework for examining the respondents dating choices.

The professional turn in sports has prompted the search for explanations beyond the physical when discussing quality of performance. Mental Toughness has been recognised as one of the most important psychological attributes in achieving performance excellence across multiple sport settings. Yet, despite this, little research has been conducted into mental toughness development. This research seeks to answer the question: What insights can the development and implementation of a mental toughness programme for a semi-professional South African cricket team provide regarding Mental Toughness development? Based on a theoretical framework of mental toughness in cricket, a programme was developed in collaboration with the Border Cricket Team and Coaches. Incorporating elements that focussed on education, environment, awareness and mental skills, the programme was implemented in both individual and group settings during the off- and pre-seasons. An analysis of the participants’ experiences identified the need for a theoretical understanding of mental toughness within teams, facilitating the design of interventions that integrate the team and the individual. Future programmes should include measures of mastery, and individually customised approaches to mental toughness enhancement that acknowledge the potential contextual and individual variation in mental toughness.
