Exploration of ethnopedagogical values of the Osing tribe is essential to uncover the values of biological characters because the Osing tribe 3closely related to the application of biological science, for example, in utilizing plants for traditional ceremonial activities or as medicinal plants. This study aims to explore the character values contained in the folk song of the Osing Banyuwangi tribe, related to the formation of attitudes or characters needed in studying biology. The study was conducted using a survey method using structured interview techniques, semi-structured interviews, and in-depth interviews of 15 informants selected using Purposive Sampling and snowball sampling techniques. Data analysis consists of 3 stages: data reduction, data presentation, and making conclusions. The results of the study mentioned that the ethno-pedagogical values are found in “Tetak-tetak” and “Nggolek Ilmu” folk song of Fatrah-Abal. These two songs express explicit and implicit values of biological characters. The tetak-tetak and nggolek ilmu folk song became a community media in instilling the attitude or character values needed in studying biology at pre-school age. These values will be further developed in learning biology in schools, which are carried out in an integrated manner in affective aspect.

The use of teaching materials is essential for a teacher to deliver learning materials. Moreover, the selection of the wrong teaching materials can affect the character of students who will become weak. This study aims to analyze the relationship between social care characters integrated with electronic modules based on local wisdom of rice cultivation. The research method uses associative quantitative research, which aims to link an indicator. The research subjects were fourth-grade students, with the sampling technique being total sampling. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire. Data analysis used descriptive statistics by using a correlation test to determine the relationship between two variables. The results in this study are that the social character of the students has a suitable category, seen from the indicators of social care character after using an electronic module based on local wisdom, strengthened by the correlation results obtained by 0.969 and produces a positive relationship. Therefore, teachers need to implement electronic modules based on local knowledge in learning to instill social care characters in students.

Abstract Longtail tuna is a pelagic fish that has a wide distribution from the Java Sea to the Natuna Sea or the South China Sea. This study aims to identified the character of the population and determine differences in population/stock of longtail tuna among stock in the Java Sea and the Natuna Sea. Sampling was carried out from May 2018 to April 2019, in Pekalongan representing the Java Sea, Pemangkat representing the west Natuna Sea and Tanjung Pinang representing the east Natuna Sea. The morphometric measurement consists of 20 characters, morphometric data is standardized by dividing all the morphometric characters by the standard length (SL). Principal components and discriminant functions analysis was employed to analyze morphometric variables to obtain distinguishing characters and stock identification. Discriminant Analysis to see the components of intra and inter-population sharing was carried out using SPPS ver.16 software. The results of Principal components analysis (PCA) found there are two distinguishing morphometric characters, namely: pelvic fin length (PeL) and anal fin length (PAF) characters. Canonical discriminant analysis found two subpopulation longtail tuna, which is one sub population Java Sea and west Natuna Sea, the other is east Natuna Sea sub population.

Based on extensive field observations, population sampling, examination of a large number of specimens, and subsequent statistical analysis, we found that the characters used previously to distinguish between Pourthiaea blinii and P. podocarpifolia (Rosaceae), i.e. the density of indumentum on the lower surface of leaf blade and inflorescences, are extremely various within a population and continuous in variation, and show no character correlation. These characters are therefore of little value for delimiting these two species. Here we reduce P. podocarpifolia to the synonymy of P. blinii. Lectotypification is made for both Cotoneaster blinii (basionym of Pourthiaea blinii) and Photinia podocarpifolia (basionym of Pourthiaea podocarpifolia).

Background. The article is devoted to the study of ways to transfer the features of the character’s speech characteristics into Russian. The authors consider speech characterization as a selection of words, expressions and turns of speech, acting as a means of artistic representation of actors. The functions that perform the speech features of the character are discussed in the work. The authors analyze the ways of translating the speech characteristics of the characters of D. Mitchell’s work Black Swan Green into Russian, comparing two existing translations by T. Borovikova and A. Polyarinov. Purpose. To identify ways of translating the speech characteristics of the characters by the example of translations of the work of D. Mitchell Black Swan Green, performed by T. Borovikova and A. Polyarinov. Materials and methods. The material of the research is David Mitchell’s novel Black Swan Green, as well as its translations into Russian, made by Tatiana Borovikova and Alexey Polyarinov. The research methods were the comparative analysis, linguistic observation, as well as the continuous sampling method. Results. Based on the analysis of fragments from the work, it was revealed that when translating the speech characteristics of the characters, the translators used lexical and grammatical transformations (functional replacements, omissions, literal translation, repetition and doubling of the consonant sound, concretization and addition), trying to preserve both the plan of expression and the plan of content.

Previous molecular phylogenetic studies of Pelargonium have remained inconclusive with respect to branching patterns of major infrageneric lineages, with the exception of a basalmost generic split that reflects chromosome length differences. Because of this and the lack of clearly distinguishing morphological characters, no subgeneric classification has been undertaken so far. Here, we present increased phylogenetic signal using chloroplast atpB-rbcL spacer and trnL-F sequences including additional taxa (110 taxa in total) and character sampling. All analyses confirmed the previously recognised first split into two clades characterised by chromosome size, and also converged on four major clades (two within each chromosome size group). The four major clades are further supported by synapomorphic length mutations from both intergenic spacers. The evolution of characters from flower morphology and phenolic constituents was examined for usefulness for clade delimitation. Although character state distributions did not generally reveal clear synapomorphies for the respective lineages, differences in state distributions of floral characters and leaf phenols support the circumscription of these major clades. In particular, nectar guides and petal-ratios indicate character state shifts among clades. The leaf flavonoids, myricetin and prodelphinidin, exhibit differing evolutionary trends in Pelargonium species with small chromosomes. In summary, all results favour the recognition of four, morphologically diagnosable, lineages as subgenera and support a revised subgeneric classification of Pelargonium. In addition, a new section (stat. nov.) including two subsections (comb. nov.) is segregated from an otherwise paraphyletic section Polyactium.

This paper critically assesses all morphological cladistic analyses of the Metazoa that were published during the last one and a half decades. Molecular and total evidence analyses are also critically reviewed. This study focuses on evaluating alternative phylogenetic positions of the ‘acoelomate’ worms: Platyhelminthes, Nemertea, and Gnathostomulida. This paper consists of two parts. In Part I, all recently proposed sister group hypotheses and the supporting synapomorphies for these phyla are evaluated. Discrepancies in the treatment of corresponding characters in different cladistic analyses are identified, and where possible, resolved. In Part II, the overall phylogenetic significance across the Metazoa of all characters relevant for placing the ‘acoelomate’ worms is examined. The coding and scoring of these characters for other phyla are evaluated, and uncertainties in our understanding are pointed out in order to guide future research. The characters discussed in this paper are broadly categorized as follows: epidermis and cuticle, reproduction and sexual condition, development, larval forms, coeloms and mesoderm source, nervous system and sensory organs, nephridia, musculature, digestive system, and miscellaneous characters. Competing phylogenetic hypotheses are compared in terms of several criteria: 1) taxon sampling and the fulfillment of domain of definition for each character; 2) character sampling; 3) character coding; 4) character scoring and quality of primary homology; 5) quality of the proposed diagnostic synapomorphies as secondary homologies. On the basis of this study I conclude that a sister group for the Platyhelminthes has not yet been unambiguously established. A clade minimally composed of Neotrochozoa (Mollusca, Sipuncula, Echiura, Annelida) emerges as the most likely sister group of the Nemertea on the basis of morphological and total evidence analyses. Finally, morphological data currrently favor a sister group relationship of Gnathostomulida and Syndermata (probably plus Micrognathozoa). In contrast, molecular or total evidence analyses have not identified a reliable sister group of Gnathostomulida.Further progress in our understanding of metazoan phylogeny crucially depends on the improvement of the quality of currently adopted cladistic data matrices. A thorough reassessment of many of the more than 70 morphological characters discussed here is necessary. Despite the recent compilation of comprehensive data matrices, the power to test competing hypotheses of higher-level metazoan relationships is critically compromised due to uncritical data selection and poor character study in even the most recently published cladistic analyses.

This paper evaluates and compares the performance of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Sparse Representation Classifier (SRC) for recognition of isolated Arabic handwritten characters. The proposed framework converts the gray-scale character image to a binary image through Otsu thresholding, and size-normalizes the binary image for feature extraction. Next, we exploit image down-sampling and the histogram of image gradients as features for image classification and apply fusion (combination) of these features to improve the recognition accuracy. The performance of the proposed system is evaluated on Isolated Farsi/Arabic Handwritten Character Database (IFHCDB) – a large dataset containing gray scale character images. Experimental results reveal that the histogram of gradient consistently outperforms down-sampling based features, and the fusion of these two feature sets achieves the best performance. Likewise, SRC and SVM both outperform KNN, with the latter performing the best among the three. Finally, we achieved a commanding accuracy of 93.71% in character recognition with fusion of features classified by SVM, where 92.06% and 91.10% is achieved by SRC and KNN respectively.

This thesis investigates the evolution of two secondary sexual characters in birds, large male body size and exaggerated male tail length. To determine whether the elaboration of these two characters is associated with two correlates of sexual selection intensity, mating system and parental care, I collected and examined morphological information for 1,990 species and natural history data for 745 species. Comparative studies should account for the problem of related species sharing similarities through common descent, so here I investigate associations with contrast scores that measure the variation radiating from unique ancestral nodes in a phylogeny. I show that greater polygyny correlates strongly with increasing male size but only slightly with longer male tail length, and that lesser paternal care correlates strongly with both traits. These results indicate that the evolution of increased male body size and exaggerated male tail length in birds is substantially influenced by the intensity of sexual selection.

We proposed new variance estimators for the poststratified estimator of the population total in two-stage sampling. The linearization or Taylor series variance estimator and the jackknife linearization variance estimator are popular for the poststratified estimator. The jackknife linearization variance estimator utilizes the ratio, ^Rc, which balances the weights for the poststrata while the linearization or Taylor series estimator does not. The jackknife linearization variance estimator is equivalent to Rao's (1985) adjusted variance estimator. Our proposed estimator makes use of the ratio, ^R c, in a different shape which is naturally derived from the process of expanding to the second-order Taylor series linearization, while the standard linearization variance estimator is only expanded to the first-order. We investigated the properties and performance of the linearization variance estimator, the jackknife linearization estimator, the proposed variance estimator and its modified version analytically and through simulation study. The simulation study was carried out on both artificially generated data and real data. The result showed that the second order accurate variance estimator and its modified version could be very good candidates for the variance estimation of poststratified estimator of population total.

When applied to radio astronomy instrumentation, practical limitations on circuitry restrict digital correlators to extremely coarse quantization. This paper examines non-linear effects of modified two-bit quantization on astronomical correlators. Equations are presented to correct quantization bias in estimates. The degradation due to quantization is given and plotted. The necessary tolerance in threshold levels is established to avoid systematic errors in power spectrum measurement. An alternative method of measuring power is derived that reduces parameter sensitivity.

AbstractAwareness of exhaustible forest resources is not recent in human history; rather, it dates back to the late Middle Ages, when it became clear that some kind of planning was needed to utilise forest resources and to do so, assessment was necessary. Postponed in time, enlarged to a national scale and based on statistical sampling, compared to the inventory methods adopted at that time, modern NFIs are assigned to produce sound information necessary to support forest policies. Forest areas and composition, ownership, growing stock and increment, as well as management, silviculture and structural characters are among the variables assessed by NFIs. This chapter provides statistics on those variables. For areas, estimates are shown for Total wooded area, Forest, Other wooded land, and their distribution among inventory categories and forest types, which describe species composition. In addition, the chapter also addresses distribution by altitude classes. For stands characters, areas are shown by crown coverage, development stage and age class. Lastly, inventory statistics are given on the presence and amount of small trees and shrubs.

North Sulawesi is a major producer of 'bete' Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott). Taro has beneficial economic value as an excellent source of carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and fibre. Taro contains low-calorie foods that can be an alternative consumption as a substitute for rice and become and can normalize sugar for people with diabetes. This study aims to determine the diversity of taro germplasm in North Sulawesi using morphometric characters. This study was conducted from April – October 2022. Explorative and interview-based research exploratively in four districts/cities: Minahasa Regency, South Minahasa, Talaut Islands and Tomohon City. Sampling characterization using a purposive sampling method. Cluster analysis with the Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic Mean (UPGMA) was utilized for the analysis of the similarity level data. The results of the qualitative analysis revealed that there were two large groups (I and II). In cluster I, seven accessions was all purple taro, whereas in cluster II, there were fourteen white taro accessions. Group I consists of accession numbers 5 and 6 (Talaut Island) and accession numbers 7, 8, 13, 16 and 17 (South Minahasa Regency). Group II consists of accessions numbered 1,2,3,4, 19, 20, and 21 (Tondano) and accession numbers 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, and 15 (Tomohon) and accession number 18 (South Minahasa). The similarity analysis revealed that taro accessions in North Sulawesi have a similarity level of between 33,3 and 100 percent.

This paper presents the probabilistic characterisation of basic variables of ship structures and their application in characterising ship hull response during collisions. 83 dog-bone samples from mild steel are tested until fracture by axial displacement and basic strength variable data are collected from their resulting stress-strain relations. The data are fitted with suitable probability density functions (PDFs), with the two best PDFs identified from Goodness-of-Fit (GoF) test results. In order to analyse response variability from ship hull collisions, indentation tests are done on six hull plate models by penetrating them with two bulbous bow models. A sampling technique is then used to select probable input design sets from the probabilistic characteristics derived for basic variables. These design sets are propagated through an automated nonlinear finite element (FE) simulation of the hull plate indentation to characterise hull plate response at the onset of rupture.

In offshore engineering, JONSWAP shapes are commonly used to fit wave spectra and characterise the peakedness of the sea state. The latter is defined as γ, the so-called peak enhancement factor, which is as large as the peak is acute, with values generally ranging from ∼1 to 7 (1 and 3.3 being usually adopted for fully-developed and average wind seas respectively). The determination of γ values permit to simulate realistic sea conditions later on, in particular for determining extreme loads on floating structures in severe sea states. The consistency of the fitting with respect to the actual sea state is subject to — at least — two key, connected aspects, which are: the frequency resolution (i.e., the spacing between two consecutive spectrum estimates) and the sampling error (i.e., the statistical variability of estimates due to both the finiteness of the wave record and the spectral averaging). Based on realistic sea state spectral simulations, this work addresses the sensitivity of the JONSWAP fitting to these aspects and shows that it systematically results in a bias in the peakedness estimate — the bias being aggravated when the sampling error is large for a given signal length (from 10min to 1h). It is shown, in particular, that the error committed with respect to the true γ value is generally higher than 5% for most types of peaks and may often exceed 30%. The aim of this work is to emphasize this issue for practical offshore and oceanographic applications for it may, in turn, potentially introduce a bias in the dynamic response of floating structures in numerical simulations and tank tests.

Original objectives: The overall goal of our work was to gain information regarding the genetic and molecular control of pathways leading to the production of secondary metabolites determining major fruit quality traits in pepper and to develop tools based on this information to assist in crop improvement. The specific objectives were to: (1) Generate a molecular map of pepper based on simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. (2) Map QTL for capsaicinoid (pungency) content (3) Determine possible association between capsaicinoid and carotenoid content and structural genes for capsaicinoid and carotenoid biosynthesis. (4) Map QTL for quantitative traits controlling additional fruit traits. (5) Map fruit-specific ESTs and determine possible association with fruit QTL (6) Map the C locus that determines the presence and absence of capsaicinoid in pepper fruit and identify candidate genes for C.locus. Background: Pungency, color, fruit shape and fruit size are among the most important fruit quality characteristics of pepper. Despite the importance of the pepper crop both in the USA and Israel, the genetic basis of these traits was poorly understood prior to the studies conducted in the present proposal. In addition, molecular tools for use in pepper improvement were lacking. Major conclusions and achievements: Our studies enabled the development of a saturated genetic map of pepper that includes numerous SSR markers. This map has been integrated with a number of other independent maps resulting in the publication of a single resource map consisting of more than 2000 markers. Unlike previous maps based primarily on tomato-originated RFLP markers, the new maps are based on PCR markers that originate in Capsicum providing a comprehensive and versatile resource for marker-assisted selection in pepper. We determined the genetic and molecular bases of qualitative and quantitative variation of pungency, a character unique to pepper fruit. We mapped and subsequently cloned the Pun1 gene that serves as a master regulatoar for capsaicinoid accumulation and showed that it is an acyltransferase. By sequencing the Pun1 gene in pungent and non-pungent cultivars we identified a deletion that abolishes the expression of the gene in the latter cultivars. We also identified QTL that control capsaicinoid content and therefore pungency level. These genes will allow pepper breeders to manipulate the level of pungency for specific agricultural and industrial purposes. In addition to pungency we identified genes and QTL that control other key developmental processes of fruit development such as color, texture and fruit shape. The A gene controlling anthocyanin accumulation in the immature fruit was found as the ortholog of the petunia transcription factor Anthocyanin2. The S gene required for the soft flesh and deciduous fruit nature typical of wild peppers was identified as the ortholog of tomato polygalacturonase. We identified two major QTL controlling fruit shape, fs3.1 and fs10.1, that differentiate elongated and blocky and round fruit shapes, respectively. Scientific and agricultural implications: Our studies allowed significant advances in our understanding of important processes of pepper fruit development including the isolation and characterization of several well known genes. These results also provided the basis for the development of molecular tools that can be implemented for pepper improvement. A total of eleven refereed publications have resulted from this work, and several more are in preparation.
