Sally, what you said actually really resonates a lot and I do think that the lawyers both in and outside of law firms around the globe that my company engages, as well as lawyers on our legal team who have responsibility, either for different substantive areas or different parts of the world, also play that bridge, because I think, Hannah, you said at the outset, and, Dr. Hall, your paper also showed kind of the increased complexity and overlap of so many issues involving transnational law, that you really need not just the expertise but frequently how you bring the different pieces of expertise together, internally and externally, to bear on creating a solution to either a problem or driving business opportunities.

Streszczenie:
Background Understanding individual food preferences is critical for creating tailored strategies that promote healthy individual eating behaviors. Individual sensory liking appears to be an essential determinant of dietary intake. Taste preferences influence satisfaction and satiety, and may consequently influence weight status and psychological adjustment. The purpose of this study was to identify the association between taste preferences (sweet, salty, sweet & fatty, salty & fatty) and personality features. Methods The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III) was used for the assessment of personality traits and PrefQuest (PQ) was used for measuring recalled food preferences. A total of 137 participants were included in the study. The relationship between compulsive and antisocial features and taste preferences was assessed by hierarchical multiple linear regression, while controlling for age, gender, BMI, marital status, and educational level. Results The antisocial personality traits were a negative explanatory variable for sweet & fatty taste preference, R2 = .15, t(132) = − 2.40, p = .018, 95% [−.57, −.06] and salty & fatty taste preference, R2 = .16, t(133) = − 2.38, p = .019, 95% [−.07, −.01], while controlling for anthropological factors. In addition, men showed a higher preference than women for sweet & fatty food, such as chocolate or desserts, rsp = .19, p = .021, and for the salty & fatty food, rsp = .30, p < .001. BMI was not found to moderate the relationship between personality and taste preference. No significant association was found between compulsive personality traits and food preference, as assessed by sensory liking. Conclusions The findings can bring a much better understanding of the relationship between the compulsive or antisocial personality and taste preferences. In addition, it may help build psychotherapeutic and nutritional strategies that promote healthy eating behaviors, tailored to a particular personality style.

Bram Stoker (1847–1912) came from an Irish medical family whose influence is not hard to detect in his most famous work, Dracula, which sadly did not bring him the fame and fortune which his older brother William Thornley achieved. The latter was not only President of the Irish College of Surgeons and knighted, but held appointments at the two major Dublin asylums – the Richmond Hospital and St Patrick's. He was even a member of the Medico–Psychological Society for a while, and thus was well-placed to advise on the activities and thought-processes of the doctors in Dracula.

Now proven by extensive research to be the works of sculptor Madison Colby (1842-1871), the 19-inch rondels bespeak a talent abruptly silenced by tuberculosis but not too soon to escape the notice of the San Francisco and Chicago art communities. Having experienced this resurrection, Colby’s undeniable skill but sadly limited catalog can once again enjoy a deserved acclaim.

The sensual abuse cases' progressive contribution was being targeted mostly on women, infants, and homosexuals, by the disparate manner of assault-style like sodomy and the killer is male. Sadly, many children become the sufferer of sex-related homicides perpetrated by the individual who are intended to protect them from evil. Four categories of rapists are power reassurance, power assertive, anger retaliatory, and anger excitation. It is necessary to bring justice to society and should fear the consequences the criminals will face. We present a case study that will bring about the important facts and figures of how forensic science helps give conclusions to the cases. In some situations. Offender profiling has been debate on recommending psychiatric and psychological analysis of the sexual offender in such despicable crime.

The Second Vatican Council influenced on the apostolate of most of the religious orders and congregations devoted to education. The need to adequate themselves to the new educational statements that were promoted through the Council Documents will bring about significant changes in their pedagogical premises. The aim of this article is to show how this process was managed by two well-known religious congregations in the Basque Country: De La Salle Brothers and the Vedruna Sisters. To analyse this case, we have used primary sources from the archives of both congregations where the process of accommodation to Vatican II is brought to light. In conclusion, it can be highlighted that an internal renovation happened according to the religious premises, and some pedagogical renewal aspects took place concerning the importance of the Basque language and culture, teacher training, and the option for the poor.

Economists are often accused of being narrow specialists, unable to see how their particular area of expertise relates to wider issues. But there is a handful of economists of whom such statements could never be made. Among these is Professor James Meade, who sadly died in December 1995. James Meade was one of the outstanding economists of this century, and a hallmark of his work was a remarkable capacity to see the economy as a whole. He contributed to many fields, but these were not isolated forays. All that be wrote was illuminated by a comprehensive understanding of social and economic problems. What is more, be had a vision as to how social and economic institutions could be reformed to make the world a better place, and be believed in the power of rational argument as a means to bring about these reforms.

Streszczenie:
This is a book about thinking, interpreting, and writing about music in performance that incorporates how race, gender, sexuality, and nation help shape the analysis of opera today. Case-study operas are chosen within the diaspora of the United States and South Africa. Both countries had segregation policies that kept black performers and musicians out of opera. During the civil rights movement and after apartheid, black performers in both countries not only excelled in opera, they also began writing their own stories into the genre. Featured operas in this study span the Atlantic and bring together works performed in the West (the United States and Europe) and South Africa. Focal works are: From the Diary of Sally Hemings (William Bolcom and Sandra Seaton), Porgy and Bess, and Winnie: The Opera (Bongani Ndodana-Breen). A chapter is devoted to the nineteenth-century Carmens (novella by Mérimée and opera by Bizet) and black settings in the United States (Carmen Jones, Carmen: A Hip Hopera) and South Africa (U-Carmen eKhayelitsha). Woven within the discussions of specific works are three rubrics for how the text and music create the drama: Who is in the story? Who speaks? and Who is in the audience doing the interpreting? These questions, combined with a historical context that includes how a work also resonates in the present day, form the basis for an engaged musicological practice.

This book brings together original essays by a group of international scholars to offer ground-breaking research into the ‘Advice to Princes’ tradition and related themes of good self- and public governance in Older Scots literature, and in Latin literature composed in Scotland in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and early seventeenth centuries. The essays honour Professor Sally Mapstone and bring to the fore texts both from and about the royal court in a variety of genres, and for a range of audiences. The writers and texts studied include Bower’s Scotichronicon, Henryson’s Testament of Cresseid, and Gavin Douglas’s Eneados. Lesser known authors and texts also receive much-needed critical attention, including Richard Holland’s The Buke of the Howlat, chronicles by Andrew of Wyntoun, Hector Boece, and John Bellenden, and poetry by sixteenth-century writers such as Robert Sempill, John Rolland of Dalkeith, and William Lauder. Non-literary texts, such as the Parliamentary ‘Aberdeen Articles’, further deepen discussion of the volume’s theme. Writings from south of the border, which provoked creative responses in Scots authors, and which were themselves inflected by the idea of Scotland and its literature, are also considered here as well as the Troy Book by John Lydgate, and Malory’s Morte Darthur. With a focus on historical and material context, contributors explore the ways in which these texts engage with notions of the self and with advisory subjects both specific to particular Stewart monarchs and of more general political applicability in Scotland in the late medieval and early modern periods.

The words that physicians use with patients have the power to heal or harm. The practice of medicine is shaped by the potent metaphors that are prevalent in clinical care, and military metaphors and the words of war bring with them unfortunate consequences for patients and physicians alike. Physicians who fight disease turn the patient into a passive battlefield. Patients are encouraged to remain stoic, blamed for “failing” chemotherapy and sadly remembered in heroic obituaries of lost battles. The search for disease as enemy shifts the doctor’s gaze to the computer and imaging technologies that render the patient transparent, unseen and unheard. Modern treatments save lives but patients can be the victims of collateral damage and friendly fire. In The Language of Medicine, Abraham Fuks, physician, medical educator and former Dean of Medicine, shows us how words are potent drugs that must be tailored to the individual patient and applied in carefully chosen and measured doses to offer benefits and avoid toxicity. The book shines a light on our culture that deprecates the skill of listening that is, paradoxically, the attribute that patients most desire of their doctors. Societal metronomes beat rapidly and compress clinic visits into stroboscopic encounters that leave patients puzzled, fearful and uncertain. Building on research about physicians in practice, the experiences of patients, stories of medical students as well as the history of medicine, Dr. Fuks promotes an ideal of clinical practice that is achieved by humble physicians who provide time and space for listening, select words with care, and choose metaphors that engender healing.

Schools in South Africa became more diverse with the emergence of democratic rule in 1994. Multicultural education was introduced as a strategy to bring various ethnic groups together and to grant them a platform where they could share their beliefs and cultural experiences towards a better understanding of each other and for the betterment of their country support. Sadly, the goal of uniting and sharing cultural beliefs is still a problem in South Africa as it remains one of the more racially and ethnically divided nations in the world. However, little has been written about the various factors hampering the implementation of multicultural education in schools. This chapter aims to explore and contribute to debates on multicultural education as a tool for social cohesion and identify the various barriers to the effective implementation of multicultural education.

Abstract When we returned to Bagandou from the Congo in October 1988, we learned that a group of BaAka from Ndanga- the Bongboku clan - had arrived unexpectedly near the village. They had set up a temporary camp along the Bodikala path (the one that leads to Ndanga), only a fifteen-minute walk from Bagandou center through fields and overgrowth. Since here the forest has been cut back by generations of farmers, BaAka camp sites near the village usually end up in these overgrown fields. Within the next few months, many BaAka, including the others from Ndanga, would congregate near the village because their bilo had asked them to come help with the coffee harvest. A pattern for many BaAka of the region is to come to the village every other year, during the harvest, to provide labor. Until this dry season of 1988-89, however, those of Ndanga had not made camp near Bagandou for several years, preferring to avoid the village. But this season the families of Elanga and Sandimba had to come early, because Elanga’s second wife, Ngola, was very ill, and the cause was apparently sorcery. The story was that several months earlier, Ngola had stolen some yams from a milo’s field at Ndanga, not knowing that the owner had set protective charms there to bring illness upon any thief. Learning of these charms, the family had come to Bagandou to seek a remedy, but discovered that the curse was irreversible. Sadly, Ngola died in Bagandou a week before our arrival.

When John and William Bartram set off for Florida from their Philadelphia farm on a July day in 1765, a vast and largely unknown continent lay before them. Journeying in search of novel and unusual plants for their English patrons, the virgin territories of the southeastern United States provided fertile grounds for their biological explorations. These pioneering naturalists, father and son, lived at a time when new scientific discoveries literally lay around each corner. On this trip alone, they were able to collect or draw more than 200 species new to science. One species that slipped away from them was a “very curious” shrub they found growing along the banks of the Altamaha River in Georgia. Sporting beautiful white flowers accented by a central tuft of orange stamens, the shrubs unfortunately yielded no ripe seeds. Only on a return trip to Georgia some eight years later was son William able to collect seed and bring the species into cultivation—and to the attention of the scientific world. Given the name Franklinia alatamaha, in honor of Bartram’s close friend and fellow Quaker Benjamin Franklin, the shrub turned out to represent a completely new branch of the camellia family. Thanks to its beautiful flowers and foliage, Franklinia quickly became a popular ornamental, and even today it is widely cultivated in gardens. But Bartram’s horticultural introduction of this unique plant was fortuitous for another reason: The species has disappeared from its native habitat along the Altamaha River and was last seen in the wild in 1803. Sadly, Franklinia represents one of the first species known to vanish from the American landscape. While the American frontier formally closed in 1892, the biological discovery of America continues to this day. Not all discoveries are as spectacular as the “curious shrubs” the Bartrams had the good fortune to find, but each, in its own way, is just as important. The ongoing process of exploring our biological frontiers gradually fills in the fabric of our knowledge about the United States and its ecosystems. The knowledge generated by this basic inventory also serves as the backbone of our efforts to protect our nation’s biological diversity.

In this gallery we will look at the portraits of molecules which can affect us very profoundly, and not only ourselves, but also the life we carry inside us, or the life we would like to create. In a private room at the end of the gallery are a few portraits that were not thought suitable for public exhibition, but which selected individuals will be allowed to view. These are molecules that are deemed undesirable, but their eradication is proving difficult, if not impossible. Few things are more important than creating new life, and yet nature has an almost cavalier attitude to the process, investing in gross overproduction of the raw materials necessary. Women have the ability to produce around three hundred eggs in a lifetime, and men to manufacture three hundred million sperm a week. Despite this abundance the human population has been kept in check in many ways—high infant mortality, famine, disease, war; but even so, today we have a world that is overpopulated with humans. This has come about through the success of science, which has lifted the first three of these natural scourges, although it has made the fourth much worse. Sadly science has so far not elicited the response of better birth control in many parts of the world, but it has made it possible to plan parenthood carefully. Science has also made it possible to ensure that if you decide to have a baby, then the baby you bring into the world should be perfect. The only prayer that potential parents in developed nations deem necessary is ‘please let our baby be all right.’ There are a few simple precautions that a woman can take to ensure her baby has a good chance of avoiding some risks that would seriously affect it.
