Abstract: The sacraments have been part of the life of Christianity since the earliest Christian communities, even though the understanding of experience and sacramental theology has accompanied the times and the course of history. The ecclesial communities of today find, in the practice of the administration of the sacraments, different motivations ranging from the ritual and theological perspective, conceived by the Catholic Church, to the criteria of living and coexistence. Identifying the consonances and dissonances present in the theological, ritual and experiential perspectives of the sacraments becomes the objective of this article, which understands that both the ecclesial and Christian communities can assume different perspectives in the life of the sacraments. Keywords: Christian initiation; Rite of passage; Baptism; sacramental theology.

AbstractThis essay demonstrates how Louis-Marie Chauvet’s sacramental theology both coheres with the sacramentology of the Anglican divines and challenges the multitude of sacramental expressions within Anglicanism today. After giving a brief background to the sacramental controversies inherited by both Chauvet and Richard Hooker, the first section of this essay argues that key similarities exist between unitive Anglican sacramental concepts and core components of Louis-Marie Chauvet’s fundamental theology as outlined in his monograph Symbol and Sacrament. After demonstrating that, through these similarities, Chauvet’s theology should be seen as a fruitful conversation partner with Anglican sacramentology, the second section of the essay will focus on two concepts within Symbol and Sacrament (the Eucharist as stumbling block and ritual as symbolic rupture) that hold the potential to enrich sacramentology within Anglicanism today.

ABSTRACTThere is increasing pressure on religious thinkers and leaders to construct theologies thoroughly grounded in the particularities of a faith tradition but truly appreciative of religious pluralism. This essay argues that a significant contribution towards articulating a Roman Catholic theology of religious diversity can be advanced by explicitly integrating developments in pneumatology and sacramental theology. Pneumatology has obvious pluralistic implications insofar as Catholic theologians and the magisterium itself have emphasized the universal presence of the Holy Spirit. The sacramental tradition is more ambivalent. On the one hand, the sacramental principle and sacramental nature of human existence would seem to endorse the authenticity of religious pluralism. On the other hand, sacramental theology in the West has historically been shaped by a Christomonism which necessarily tends toward exclusivism. This tendency can be overcome by understanding sacraments in light of a Spirit Christology from below.

[The author demonstrates how Ghislain Lafont looks “through” the critiques of meta-narrative and ontotheology for an appropriate ground for theology. Lafont appeals to sacramental memorial as the starting point for a response to postmodern critiques, a response that is shown to be both balanced and faithful. When presented in relation to the works of two of his contemporaries, Louis-Maiie Chauvet and David N. Power, Lafont's sacramental theology can be appreciated for its hopeful vision and practical contribution to a contemporary understanding of sacrament and ritual action.]

In Laudato Si, Pope Francis calls for a theology respectful of creation. I here suggest that balancing Karl Rahner’s theology of creation with his sacramental theology brings us closer to providing such a theology. Rahner’s sacramental theology fittingly complements his theology of the incarnation, by highlighting the significance of the redemption of creation accomplished in Christ. Matter and nature are redeemed and must now be listened to because they also have been made to bespeak of the divine re-creative power. Revealing life to be a gift and consecrating all natural beings as creatures endowed with a purpose, the Eucharist leads those taking part in it to perceive in nature a sacrament of God’s love. In the Eucharistic liturgy, they celebrate and reconnect with (their own) nature, which is healed and transformed to become an instrument for God.

Questions of the mutual recognition, or not, of the ministry of different Churches have been high on the ecumenical agenda for many years. Roman Catholic sacramental theology, manifest inter alia in Canon Law, has a clear understanding of the validity or invalidity of sacraments, including holy orders. Validity is a strong word and implies that sacramental acts which are not valid are de facto ineffective.

Streszczenie:
While German Lutheran theologian Eberhard Jüngel (1934-) has made a number of significant contributions to contemporaneous discussions of sacramental theology, this topic has largely been ignored by interpreters of his thought. This study adds to the field of research into Jüngel's theology by summarizing and evaluating, through a close reading of pertinent primary and secondary source materials, his approach to the problem of sacrament. The study is divided into four units that correspond to the major themes that emerge in Jüngel's sacramental theology. The first unit considers Jüngel's interesting claim that the word of God (and, in a certain qualified sense, the human word) functions sacramentally as it addresses its hearer. Part II consists of an analysis of Jüngel's oftstated assertion that Jesus Christ is the unique and preeminent sacrament of God for the world. The third unit explores Jüngel's ecclesiology, and makes transparent his interesting approach to the question of the church's sacramentality. The fourth unit investigates Jüngel's doctrines of baptism and the Lord's Supper, and includes a hermeneutical proposal for reading his texts on these doctrines. Throughout this four-part analysis, the study demonstrates that Jüngel consistently appeals to the category of ‘interruption' for describing God's sacramental relation to the world and its actualities. While containing a number of appreciative remarks on this description, the study concludes that the hegemony of the category of ‘interruption' in Jüngel's theology of sacrament raises important questions concerning its coherence and tenability.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is a comparative analysis of the doctrine of deification in sacramental worship as taught (and practiced) by the Eastern Orthodox and Latter-day Saint (Mormon) churches. The doctrine that man may become like God—known as deification, divinization, or theosis—is a central teaching in the Orthodox and Mormon traditions. Both faiths believe that man may become like God. However, because of doctrinal presuppositions and disagreements regarding the natures of God and man, Orthodox and Mormon teachings of deification do not mean the same thing. This thesis will outline several key distinctions between their respective doctrines. And yet, despite doctrinal disagreements, this thesis will also illustrate how Orthodoxy and Mormonism share several notable similarities regarding the function of sacramental worship in the process of theosis. Mormonism and Orthodoxy both believe that men and women may achieve theosis only as they interact with God. Through the combined initiatives of the Father, his son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, humankind may receive the attributes of divinity and participate in the process of deification. The means whereby humanity may interact with God are through sacramental participation. This thesis will illustrate how institutional rituals and personal worship practices foster man's divine interaction and ultimate deification. Furthermore, Orthodox and Mormon rituals are deeply rooted in the doctrine of deification—each ritual contributing to man's divine transformation. As such, those rituals reflect numerous thematic variations and emphatic differences of their respective traditions. This should not discourage the reader from comparing Orthodox sacraments with Mormon sacraments; rather, as one studies the similarities and differences in the Orthodox and Mormon sacraments, he or she will begin to see how deification is so intricately woven into the worship practices of these two faiths.

In my work in a diocesan marriage tribunal I have observed that many couples who are planning their weddings are influenced greatly by the superficial focus of our culture. In fact, there is statistical and sociological evidence that culture is highly influential in much Catholic wedding planning. Presented in this paper is evidence of how little Catholics know about the sacramental nature of marriage and how their married life affects themselves and others around them. This paper presents a theological reflection on the sacrament of marriage; an analysis of how the Rite of Marriage is usually perceived and carried out; a study of how the attitude of brides and grooms at the time of their wedding effects their life thereafter and, by association, the greater family and community; and it offers an explanation of how instructing couples on the theology behind the Rite of Marriage as prima theologia can better prepare them to live their marriage sacramentally. The pre-marital classes in the Diocese of Orange are currently comprised of mostly practical information on how to live successfully as a married couple, but they neglect to also consider the most important issue for them as Catholics: how to live out a sacramental marriage. It is proposed in this document that a diocesan-wide premarital handbook be designed and employed which provides greater emphasis on the ecclesial aspect of marriage as well as the practical advice of seasoned mentors.

This study considers the development of Augustine's early soteriology in the years leading up to and including his writing of Confessions. Central to that inquiry is a treatment of his increasing use of the term humilitas. Yet that inquiry necessitates a broader account of the fallen soul and its healing by the Incarnate Savior. The result is a mostly chronological survey that shows Augustine developing clearer connections between his soteriology, Christology, and sacramental theology

Streszczenie:
This chapter covers the sacramental theology of John Calvin, emphasizing the recurring connection and interplay between word and image—that is, that both the Law and the Gospel are portrayed in a way that connects with the physical senses in the image of the sacraments. For Calvin, sacraments are connected to the self-manifestation of God in creation and in Christ as well as the self-revelation of Christ in word and sacrament. An intriguing aspect of Calvin’s sacramental theology is his view that Christ initially gave himself through the “sacrament of the Law” and later gave himself through the “sacraments of the Gospel”—Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, the latter being a ladder ascending to heaven. Thus, both the Old and New Testaments play a vital role in Calvin’s theologies of the Sacraments.

This chapter covers the sacramental theology of the scholastic theologian and bishop of Paris, Peter Lombard. Lombard’s Book of Sentences of the mid-twelfth century defined a sacrament as “a sign of God’s grace and the form of invisible grace, in such a way as to carry its image and be its cause.” Moreover, Lombard identified seven sacraments: Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation, Marriage, Ordination, Confession (Penance), and Extreme Unction. This chapter also addresses how two sacraments in particular reveal unique aspects of Lombard’s sacramental theology: Marriage—an expression of Christ’s union with the church—and Confession (Penance)—contrition caused by grace being poured into the hearts of believers that leads to penance.

Streszczenie:
This chapter argues that Edward Schillebeeckx and Louis-Marie Chauvet formulate their theologies of sacraments to intentionally counter the negative influences of Neo-Scholasticism, which created too much separation between the natural and supernatural, between theology and life. Schillebeeckx, building on his interpretation of Thomas Aquinas, emphasized that sacraments are instances of personal encounter grounded in the saving work of God in the incarnation and therefore proper to a distinctly human world. Throughout his work on the topic, Schillebeeckx reorients sacramental theology in order to take the human world of history and subjectivity seriously. Chauvet describes this theology as “objectivist.” It was a theology concerned with the objective effects of sacraments in terms of the production of grace in the individual recipient. He proposes a sacramental theology grounded in contemporary explorations into the nature of language and culture. Schillebeeckx and Chauvet are two of the most innovative, and controversial, voices in Catholic sacramental theology in the past fifty years. They share a common concern that contemporary sacramental theologies take the concrete historicity of human subjects seriously rather than rely on abstract philosophical categories.
