Streszczenie:
In the 1820s and 1830s, when Russia’s encounter with Romanticism primarily took place, it was a culture caught in a complex debate about its own identity. Russian literature developed late and was dependent at first on that of Ukraine and Poland, and later Western Europe, especially France and England. Russian culture had to somehow map broadly European issues and movements on to its own reality. Romantic concepts and tropes such as the bold, brooding individual, the focus on interiority, the embrace of the irrational, and the breaking of previous conventions had political as well as artistic import in Russia. But the Romantic period in Russian literature is indelibly linked with the Caucasus. Romanticism appeared at the point when Russians first agreed that they now had a literature they could call their own, one that did not consist merely of translations and borrowings. The so-called ‘southern theme’ relating to the Caucasus and to exile was instrumental in this affirmation of a Russian national literature.

Streszczenie:
This book examines the history of Russian conservative thought from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the present. As it shows, conservatism has made an underappreciated contribution to Russian national identity, to the ideology of Russian statehood, and to Russia's social-economic development. The book charts the contributions made by philosophers, politicians, and others during the Imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet periods. Looking at cultural, political, and social-economic conservatism in Russia, it discusses ideas and issues of more than historical interest. It demonstrates that such ideas are helpful in interpreting Russia's present as well as its past and will be influential in shaping Russia's future, for better or for worse, in the years to come. For the past two centuries Russian conservatives have sought to adapt to the pressures of modernization and westernization and, more recently, globalization, while preserving national identity and political and social stability. We can now understand how Russian conservatives have continually proposed forms of cultural, political, and economic development seen as building on existing traditions, identity, forms of government, and economic and social life, rather than being imposed on the basis of abstract theory and foreign models.

Streszczenie:
Russian military operations since 1991 have displayed a high degree of continuity. Being tailored to specific situations, these operations reveal a nearly constant mix of tactics, evolving with time but remaining fundamentally the same. Russia’s operational use of ambiguity is predominantly aimed at impeding or disrupting an adversary’s decision-making process. Meanwhile, the traditional ‘conventional’ tactics are always present in any operation, resulting in the omnipresent mix, described as the ‘hybrid-warfare’ challenge to the West. The long Russian experience in exercising hybrid warfare represents significant accumulated hybrid operational skills, which give the Russian forces a substantial advantage over the West in terms of operational art. Russia’s post-2014 actions against the West involving its military carry all the features of previous military operations, which suggests that warnings about a unilateral ‘new cold war’ waged by Russia are not hollow.

Streszczenie:
Russia increasingly emphasises the importance of ‘soft power’ for securing its foreign policy interests. Recent research has paid more attention to Russia’s intentions rather than to the receiving end of its cultural and public diplomacy. This volume addresses this gap and explores the specifics of both Russian language promotion and its acceptance in a number of case and country studies, including Ukraine, Germany and Ireland. The authors discuss the legal status and the practical use of Russian for communication or media use, both in the ‘near’ and the ‘far abroad’, examining the politics of the Russian language, the role of the Russian Federation in influencing these politics and the challenges that the promotion of Russian faces in particular contexts across the globe. They discern a fairly instrumental approach towards Russian language promotion. With its strong focus on the former Soviet space, language promotion aims at preserving cohorts of Russian heritage speakers, who are conceived as quasi-natural agents of Russian influence in the neighbourhood. By contrast, the willingness to engage with Russia’s language promotion is seriously diminished by the ideological loading of culture and language in Russian discourses, like those on the ‘compatriots’ and the ‘Russian World’. By declaring the active use of Russian as an expression of political loyalty, Russia almost excludes utilitarian approaches to the learning of the language. Moreover, the book documents a rather traditional understanding of culture with essentialist and static features. Instead of seeing culture as an autonomous free space for negotiation of political possibilities, Russia’s culture and language promotion rests on narrowly codified high culture.

Streszczenie:
The interest of Russian intellectuals in the French Revolution demonstrates that some Russian thinkers of the 19th century had begun to question the concept of Russia's uniqueness. Yet most of them came to believe that the French Revolution (which they tended to equate with the Western experience) was irrelevant not only to Russia but to the rest of the world as well. They saw, perhaps correctly, that the Western experience, with the French Revolution as its symbol, was foreign to Russian destiny. Most of the Russian intellectuals of that time had rightly foreseen Russia, and to some degree the rest of the world's future, as following an authoritarian/totalitarian model of development.
