Streszczenie:
In spite of the official goals of support for rural tourism promulgated by governmental bodies, rural tourism remains a marginal phenomenon. This lack of confidence in rural tourism has relatively deep roots. The basis for this is almost of an ontological nature and consists in opposition, although subconscious, against “commodified authenticity”. Another source of this lack of confidence lies in the fact that rurality, the main attractive feature of tourism, has been substantially impaired as a result of trends in the 20th century. A third reason follows from the combination of rural tourism and mass recreation, as well as inadequate response by governmental bodies and authorities to the risks for regional stability, based on unmanaged mass tourism.

The peculiarity of the modern stage experienced by Kazakhstan is that its development and formation as a sovereign state occurs in the era of tectonic shifts in the socio-economic structure of society, the change of socio-economic system, the transition from socialist formation to the capitalist path of development. Solution of socio-economic problems associated with the need for radical changes in the development of rural areas is due to the transition to a market economy. Conducting deep agrarian reforms and radical transformations in the socio-economic structure of rural areas, the development and use of natural resources of territories, rationally placed productive forces of the country depends on the efficiency of functioning and development of the economy.

The paper describes the role of rural tourism for the sustainable development of rural areas and stresses out the importance of strategic approach in the planning of their development. The author identifies core problems, which eliminate their use and disable individual strategies set by some entrepreneurs in rural tourism. Concretely it is the absence of developing projects and focus on the development of individual villages. Then it is the lack of will to cooperate, local resources are not effectively used and the local community is not adequately involved.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines how tourism affects conditions for young adults in rural areas. Such a study lies at the intersection of research about tourism impacts, adult transition, and rural areas. The aim is to examine how largescale tourism affects the opportunities for young adults living in rural areas; their perception of place and the perceived opportunities and obstacles that tourism provides. The thesis utilizes a mixed method approach. A quantitative study based on micro-data on individuals identifies the patterns and magnitudes of the mechanisms by which tourism affects population change among young adults. Interview methods are used in the case study area, Sälen, to investigate these mechanisms in depth. Finally, the rural–urban dichotomy is explored in a conceptual study that asks how tourism affects the perception of a local village as either rural or urban. Young inhabitants in rural areas are rarely considered in tourism research; therefore, the main contribution of this thesis is that it illuminates how tourism affects conditions for young adults in rural areas. The thesis reveals a substantial impact on the adult transition, mainly due to easier access to the labor market and a good supply of jobs during the high season. Further, the large number of people passing through creates flows of opportunities to make friends, get a job, or just meet people. All of these factors contribute to high mobility in these places, and to the perception of them as places where things happen. The high mobility in Sälen implies that fixed migrant categories (such as stayers and leavers) are largely insufficient. The tourism environment creates a space that is always under construction and continually producing new social relations mainly perceived as opportunities. Conceptualizing this as a modern rurality is a way to move beyond the often implicit notions of urban as modern and rural as traditional.

Streszczenie:
Gallatin County has experienced dramatic population growth over the past decade. The Sonoran Institute has been developing land use planning tools to help address the issues arising from this high growth. One of the most serious impacts of high population growth is increased vehicle traffic, typically measured through vehicle miles traveled. The Sonoran Institute's land use planning tools were used to develop two future growth scenarios, one representing growth following current trends and the other representing a higher population density and higher employment/residential mix of development. The project task was to predict the total daily vehicle miles traveled for the two future scenarios using a travel demand model. The project goals were to develop a travel demand model that was simple to run, accurate, sensitive to changes in urban form, and could output daily vehicle miles traveled for future land development scenarios. The project used a literature review to determine expected effects of changes in urban form on travel behavior, and the sensitivity of current travel modeling methods to changes in urban form. For simplicity, the travel modeling method known as the fourstep process was selected for the project with modifications to add sensitivity to urban form. Current literature almost entirely states that the basic four-step model is not sensitive to urban form. One source did indicate that the four-step process might have some sensitivity to changes in urban form, but this sensitivity was not quantified. A basic four-step process model was run for a base year and the two future scenarios. The results indicated that the high density/high mix scenario reduced daily vehicle miles traveled by about 13%. This shows that the basic four-step model is sensitive to urban form. This sensitivity was analyzed through a series of idealized land development scenarios, and the sensitivity of the process to changes in urban form was quantified. The results were then incorporated into a now modified four-step model that produced a 16% reduction in daily vehicle miles traveled between the future scenarios while also providing better comparative accuracy between the two scenarios. This method met the initial objectives of the project.

Streszczenie:
Mexico is highly dependent on fossil fuels. One of the governmental initiatives proposes to investigate the possibilities for biogas production in rural areas. Agricultural producers are highly susceptible to energy price variations and in most cases the steadily growing prices of electricity and fuels are lowering the profits and income of farmers. Environmental concerns about fossil fuels give additional stimulus towards a switch to more sustainable energy sources. Literature research on different types of biogas production technologies was carried out. Various anaerobic fermentation stages and techniques were studied in order to familiarise with particular features and to understand which of them will be more suitable for locations in rural Mexico, also taking into account the local conditions, availability of raw material, energy demands, etc. Mexico's agricultural policies and governmental support schemes were also studied. The agricultural sector in Mexico is strategically important and brings around 6% of the country's GDP. Security and availability of energy for the rural areas is crucial. A lot of improvements need to be done in this field to make this sector attractive for investors and more profitable for people who already work there. Such governmental organizations as SAGARPA - The Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing, and Food - and its support schemes and programs are aimed to help farmers both financially and technically to overcome the difficulties concerning this procedure. A detailed description of a proposed biogas production plant for a case study project at a milk farm in southern Mexico is presented in this study. Different stages and control strategies of biogas production as well as possibilities for biogas utilization in a small-scale CHP unit are assessed. Economical study was aimed to determine the financial flows of the sample project. A simplified economic analysis showed that the electricity produced in the biogas-driven CHP unit can compete with actual grid electricity prices. In addition, comparatively short payback time could be expected and the available governmental support schemes could be efficiency exploited for a commercially viable biogas production.

With an increasing demand of mobile data traffic, and a growing assumption of continuous Internet connectivity, it is important to investigate the characteristics of mobile cellular networks. The consequence of insufficient capacity will grow as the cloud and other Internet demanding services, not only makes us dependent, but becomes a way of living. The present study aims to identify areas without mobile network coverage in Värmland County in central Sweden. An additional aim is to find statistical relationships between network performance metrics such as throughput, signal strength and latency. With data collected during an eight month period, network characteristics have been investigated for the three Swedish mobile operators, Tre, Telia and Telenor. The performed data analysis show multiple regions where at least one operator is unable to provide sufficient performance and regions strongly overrepresented by a specific operator. Provided analysis also show a correlation between signal strength and key performance metrics, such as throughput and network delay.

The architect in Sweden has a weaker role than ever, participating in a dysfunctional building industry that is not capable of providing the high quality and progressive built environment that we need. There is a need for critical examination to find what could make the role more relevant today. This thesis is in search of that role and how it could contribute to society. To explore this I shall focus on rural Norrland, in particular how architecture can be used to strengthen these areas by implementing strategies that increase self-sufficiency and governance. This research is carried out through four live, collaborative case studies with two communities in rural locations. The first two being set on Holmön exploring permit-free buildings as a means to grow and challenge the municipality as well as a collective project creating benches. The third is exploring how a private project can develop and contribute to the local area through retaining local knowledge. The fourth and most extensive is the creation of a co-funded, community run apartment and community building in Klimpfjäll. Through the reflection on the progress of these projects a methodology of working is discussed to outline a way of working that could impact the building industry, expand the role of the architect and positively impact the rural areas to ultimately create a more socially and environmentally sustainable society.

Streszczenie:
An investigation into the operation of a small rural Fundamentalist Christian Fellowship is the subject of the following thesis. This field research was undertaken through observing the group for three months by attending Sunday Fellowship meetings. At the completion of that period, eight members were interviewed. Informal discussions during that time, involving approximately thirty members, added to the information accumulated. Through observation it became apparent this group originated because of their dissatisfaction with the local Christian church. This break-away Fellowship sought to form a version of Christianity that was unstructured, flexible, informal and lacking in hierarchy. As previous research had been carried out with this group, information that might otherwise have remained hidden, such as a disfellowshipped couple, became available. The scope of this thesis will include: the development of the group, observation of a typical Fellowship meeting, investigations into their 'Biblically-based' attitude and how this related to their everyday existence, as well as information concerning a rift within the Fellowship that resulted in the expulsion of two of its members. This research led to the conclusion that although the Fellowship fulfilled a desired need within the group, its future seemed uncertain, due in part to the very aims it sought to achieve. The spiritual aspect of this Christian Fellowship was willing and strong but the physical composition, the informal hierarchical structure and format, was weak, and so in the final analysis, I consider this and similar Fellowships will have a finite, continually changing existence. All names and places have been changed, at the request of those involved, to protect the group concerned.

Narcy, Deisy. "Accessibility to schooling in South African rural areas". Master's thesis, Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33879.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
In developing countries rural communities are normally geographically isolated contributing to both poverty levels and the deficiency in the participation of social and economic activities. Accessibility to education constitutes one of the primordial links between the economic growth of a country and the development of high skilled population. Given South Africa's unique history, divisions throughout the landscape incapacitate inhabitants of rural communities in reaching opportunities and services, therefore, aggravating issues related to social exclusion and inequality. This study aims to determine accessibility levels in South African rural regions by looking at different aspects that entangle the theory behind it, specifically: the zone attractiveness and impedance. With that in mind, the investigations carried out are firstly directed towards accessibility at the provincial level and thereafter a focus area is determined. At the provincial level, it was found that the Northern Cape presented the greatest disadvantages. However, given insufficient resources and data related to this province, the Cape Winelands Municipality District was chosen as the area to extend the investigations. When assessing the focus area, the study deployed a GIS-based analysis wherein potential and real accessibility were determined. Initially using the gravity measure, and subsequently using a survey carried out in the region. The study has revealed that Stellenbosch and Robertson are the towns experiencing high accessibility levels. Notwithstanding, most principal towns still experience critically low accessibility indexes. The findings of this study can, therefore, be useful in indicating areas that need further studies or are experiencing disadvantages regarding accessibility.

Water tends to flow and accumulate in response to topographical characteristics of local area and gravitational potential energy. Remote sensing data like LiDAR (Light detecting and ranging) or satellite data can be used to identify local depressions where wet areas may occur. The aim of this study was to evaluate methods that can be used to identify wet areas, to determine correlation between topography of the area and forest regeneration and to prepare proposals for forest management that could be usable in Latvia. Study area includes fertile forest land on wet mineral soils and drained mineral soils with planted spruce (Picea abies) and available LiDAR data. Map examples have been made to demonstrate methodology which allows to identify depressions with potentially hindered run-off. Fill sinks algorithm has shown best results in identifying wet areas and correlation with wet areas that were detected in field studies is 62%. TWI index is not suitable for this study because of relatively flat area. Result of this study reveals that wet areas have significant effect on tree species. In depressions, despite the fact that there has been planted spruce, main species are birch (Betula pendula) and black alder (Alnus glutinosa). Wet areas have significant effect on tree height.

Streszczenie:
Rural areas, defined as land outside towns, except industrial areas, account for over 93% of the area of Poland. They are attractive as a places of work, residence, leisure, as well as places where agricultural and non-agricultural business activities can be conducted. Agriculture is naturally associated with rural areas. Currently, apart from the agricultural function and (depending on the socioeconomic, natural or historical conditions) rural areas are also places of leisure, recreation, residence or industrial activities. This is a consequence of implementation of the concept of multi-functional development of rural areas, in which conditions are created for diverse business activities, while respecting environmental constraints. Such a multifunctional approach must take into account the interests of all parties to avoid spatial conflicts. Therefore, actions aimed at the development of rural areas should be based on an in-depth analysis of the value of the area under consideration, they should take into account natural conditions (soil, climate, terrain) of the land for conducting agricultural activities, but also take into account environmental, social and economic aspects. Objective and historical conditions affecting agriculture in Poland and the experience gained so far indicate that there is a need to change the spatial arrangement of agricultural areas. This is because of the characteristic features of agriculture in Poland, which include a disadvantageous structure of farms in terms of their area, small size of farms, insufficient technical infrastructure in villages and difficult soil conditions. Rural areas in Poland, including agriculture, are undergoing deep structural changes in regard to agricultural production, but also to farm size and layout, demographic and spatial structures as well as technical and social infrastructure. The changes taking place in rural areas in Poland are greatly affected by the Common Agricultural Policy in the European Union. As a member of the EU, Poland has been receiving aid since 2004 and has been implementing actions within Rural Development Programmes. The aim of this paper is to analyse the transformations that have been taking place in rural areas in Poland and to present selected factors and causes of the changes in rural spaces.

The paper aims at presenting to answer: can cooperation within local border traffic (LBT) be a platform for cross-border relationships in rural areas? Rural areas located in the border zone were subjected to analysis, limiting the study area to the Polish Warmia-Masuria Province and the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation. For the needs of the present task, survey studies were designed and carried out, targeting rural governments of Warmia-Masuria Province (rural areas) covered by the Agreement on LBT on the Polish side, as well as respondents residing in the Kaliningrad Oblast on the Russian side. Individual interviews represented the basic research method in data collection. The interview questionnaire was the research tool applied. As results from the carried out surveys: cross-border relationships on rural areas within LBT expand economic innovation, infiltrate social and cultural influences, overcome negative stereotypes, and reinforce cooperative habits. Furthermore, they support the development of additional cross-border cooperation area.

The rational use of land should be ensured, soil-friendly agricultural branches should be developed as well as attractive environment for work, living and resting in the countryside should be created in promoting rural development in Lithuania. Areas with favourable natural conditions have a high degree of economic activity, farm size, and economic development. However, not everywhere the natural conditions for the development of agriculture are favourable. The research was carried out in the Giedraičiai rural area of Molėtai district, which deals with the factors influencing the use of land, the declared area of land, the problem of land abandonment. The methods of legal analysis, analysis of literature, analysis, comparison and aggregation of statistical data were used during the research. After the fulfilment of the analysis of the declared area of land during the period between the years 2012 and 2016, it was established that the area of agricultural land declared during the five years increased by 655 hectares, the number of farmers who declared agricultural land decreased by 104, and the number of declared parcels declined even to 1729. The process of the growing of farms is likely to occur. The area of abandoned land in Giedraičiai subdistrict reaches 300 hectares, the number of abandoned areas exceeds 800. Estimating the statistical data and solutions of the general plan of the Molėtai district area preliminary solutions for the management of the territory of the Giedraičiai subdistrict for agriculture and rural development are being provided, i.e. it is planned to implement rural development land use planning projects for the management of farms, and to select a farmhouse farm site. To reduce the abandoned land areas, it is advisable to plan forests, expand the areas of meadows and natural pastures, apply organic farming and adapt the areas for recreation.

Research objective is to evaluate the change of ecological farm areas and cultivated cultures within the territory of Lithuania within the period from 2010 to 2014. In 2010–2014 the data from certification institutions (databases) were used for the purpose of evaluation of change of ecological farm areas, which provide all ecological farm areas declared and certified in Lithuania within the whole reported period and agricultural plants cultivated on the areas within the set period. ArcGIS software was used for demonstration of layout of ecological farm areas within the territory of Lithuania. It was established that the major areas of ecological farms analysed within the period were located in the North-East of Lithuania, less areas in the Northern and Southern parts of middle Lithuania. During the whole period the major planted acreage of the ecological farms was taken by meadows, pastures, perennial grass; these cultures annually made almost a half of the declared planted acreage. Less declared planted acreage of the ecological farms within the research period was taken by root plants and vegetables; area planted with the cultures usually made 1 per cent from all declared planted acreage of the ecological farms. Strong correlation exists between the areas of ecological farms and pastures (r = 0.70, when p = 0.0001), complex agriculture (r = 0.76, when p = 0.0001), transition forest stage and bushes (r = 0.85, when p = 0,0001), broad-leaved forests (r = 0.84, when p = 0.0001), needle-leaved forests (r = 0.72, when p = 0.0001) and mixed forests (r = 0.84, when p = 0.0001). Weak correlation exists between ecological farm area and agricultural areas with natural plant insertions (r = 0.47, when p = 0.0001).

In this research organizational mechanism is analysed through the approach to the system of integrated control of the open system of social and economic integration (based on the interests of the stakeholders and interdepartmental cooperation) in the rural areas, where the stakeholders formulate the common objectives of the sustainable development of the rural areas. Aim of the research – to substantiate the conceptual organizational mechanism of development in rural areas, where one of the most important factors with the strongest effect on functionality, i.e. the driving force, is institutional environment of the region. The aim of the research was achieved using the following methods: logical, abstraction, comparison, content analysis, collation. The results of the research revealed, that organizational mechanism of rural areas development is advisable to analyse as a particular organizational form, where functions and activity processes are connected to each other, creating the following chain: aim – sustainable development of rural areas – functions of rural areas – process – preparation and implementation integrated development strategies of the rural areas – result – social welfare. The exceptional feature of the organizational mechanism is the stakeholders (subjects) and their actions. Stakeholders perform certain roles, which affect the change of environment, in seeking the specific result. Stakeholders with a specific aim seek results by performing respective functions and processes. In the organizational mechanism of rural areas development stakeholders affect the pursuit of the organizational mechanism’s aims.

The previous survey among adult inhabitants of rural areas indicated that they do not see the possibility for development of business facilities in some rural regions of Latvia – so called specially protected nature territories (SPNT). However, the opinion of the younger generation (pupils of local schools of SPNT) about sustainable management and preservation of the nature has not been analyzed so far. The aim of study was to study the level of social awareness of children living in rural areas on sustainable environment issues. Several discussion-lectures on sustainable environment issues were organized during March-April 2017 in one of SPNT (Raznas National Park; 87 children from 6 to 12 classes were participating). The pupils’ opinion on environmental and social awareness indicated that children are more motivated to take active role in protection of environment. Moreover, most of them were aware of the importance of ecosystem services in their lives as well as their impact on nature. It was also found that the interest of children in agriculture derives from their family's core activities in this area indicating that there might be successful future scenarios in this area concentrating on development of ecological and economically sustainable innovative farming. Social innovation labs are very good example on potential scenario that could be repeated also in Latvian rural areas to areas of social actions in order find a better solutions and cope with problems and after all help to successfully generate ideas and implement innovations.

Mazowieckie Province is a unique area of Poland. It is characterised by social and economic diversification. Located in this province, Warsaw strongly influences the development of neighbouring rural areas. On the other hand, rural municipalities whose socio-economic parameters are among the lowest in the country are located within several dozen kilometres from the centre of the capital. Such disparities show that Mazowieckie is characterised by large interregional differences in its internal structure. This is an interesting research area that requires the analysis of socio-economic development in this region to be conducted in a multidimensional way. The aim of this study is to evaluate the spatial differentiation of the level of socio-economic development of rural areas in Mazowieckie Province. Linear ordering was used to determine the level of socio-economic development. The results of the study are consistent with core-periphery theory. The large urban centres that function as the centres for the surrounding rural areas have the greatest impact on the level of rural development. The impact of smaller towns can also be noticed. They often are the local development centres for surrounding villages.

Streszczenie:
The article offers an analysis of the development of the tractor and combine harvester fleet in 2001 - 2016. There are stated tractors and combines of the most common brands registered in the country. A methodology has been developed for the estimation of an adequate quantity of tractors and combines for timely cultivation of the sowing areas under agricultural crops. The methodology is based on the calculation of the annual increase in the summary engine capacity of the entire fleet of tractors and combine harvesters, and its comparison with the annual increase in the sowing areas. It is assumed that 10% of the sowing areas are cultivated by worn-out tractors, and 7.5% of the new tractor and combine capacity is required for the replacement (amortisation) of the worn-out tractors. We consider that the increase in the summary capacity should compensate for the increase in the sowing areas, taking into account also the impact of the total yield upon the productivity of the machinery. It has been found out that during the period the summary engine capacity of the tractors has grown 1.52 times, the summary engine capacity of the combine harvesters – 2.8 times; in the same period the area under agricultural crops has increased approximately 1.38 times but the area under cereals and canola – approximately 1.8 times. Several authors consider specific capacity kWh-1 as a criterion for the estimation of an adequate quantity of the machinery; therefore there are calculated also its changes in a 16-year period, with the specific capacity of both the tractors and combine harvesters increasing. The average specific power kWh-1 is considered as relatively high, but, due to the concentration of production, a decrease in this indicator is possible in the future. The average weighted capacity of the purchased new tractors and combine harvesters has also increased. The increase in the summary capacity of the tractor fleet compensates for the increase in the sowing areas and even exceeds it a little. In its turn, the increase in the summary capacity of the combine fleet allows timely harvesting the significantly increased sowing area, and more than twice the increased totals yield at the end of the period, and, compared to the beginning, slightly shorten the harvesting duration. The calculations do not include weather conditions during the harvesting period. As increase in the sowing areas and total yield is expected still further, upgrading of the tractor fleet should be continued at approximately the same rate – by purchasing, on the average, 600 to 700 new tractors and 80 to 100 new combine harvesters every year.

This study investigates the role of remote work in enhancing the resilience of rural and remote municipalities in the Nordic countries, highlighting the shift towards hybrid work models. The report presents six case studies, each detailing the context, challenges and opportunities associated with remote work. The study found that many public authorities lack formal remote work policies, relying on pre-existing or pandemic-developed frameworks aimed at work-life balance. The research points to remote work's potential for attracting and retaining residents and skilled workers, crucial for rural development, despite challenges like the need for improved digital infrastructure and the absence of formal policies. Initiatives like co-working spaces and the focus on enhancing regional attractiveness through quality of life and infrastructure investments are seen as key to leveraging remote work for sustainable regional development. However, the study also notes obstacles such as legislative issues and the need for comprehensive strategies to fully realise the benefits of remote work for rural revitalisation. Remote work offers a pathway to sustainable development in Nordic regions by introducing new skills, enhancing business innovation, and improving public services, which helps combat out-migration and boosts quality of life. For maximum impact, investments in digital infrastructure, supportive work environments, and regional attractiveness are crucial, paving the way for a more vibrant and sustainable future.

This study investigates the areas and populations served by three USDA rural broadband programs-- the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP), the Community Connect grant program, and the ReConnect program. BIP was the largest of these programs (through fiscal year 2021) in terms of net obligations and population in areas served (more than 1.3 percent of the U.S. population). However, BIP projects had the smallest value of obligations per person ($875 in 2020 dollars) and per square mile of approved project service areas ($26,000 in 2020 dollars). The populations served by all three programs tended to be more rural, less educated, poorer, and older than those in areas not served (for BIP) or ineligible (for Community Connect and ReConnect). All programs reached a larger share of the American Indian/ Alaska Native (AIAN) and White populations than other races and a larger share of the non-Hispanic than Hispanic population. A larger share of the AIAN population was served by Community Connect and ReConnect because a larger share of the AIAN population was eligible. However, a smaller share of the eligible AIAN population lived in approved ReConnect project service areas than most other racial groups because a smaller share of eligible AIANs lived in areas that applied to ReConnect

This policy brief delves into the importance of understanding and supporting the priorities of young people in Nordic rural regions to ensure these communities thrive. It highlights the importance of addressing challenges that keep youth from staying in rural areas and engaging with those unsure about their future there. Serving as a comprehensive guide for policymakers, the policy brief contextualises the report from the Nordic rural youth panel "From Fields to Futures: 40 action points for rural revitalisation". The brief examines academic discussions, prevalent narratives, and youth engagement efforts, emphasising the Nordic Rural Youth Panel's 40 proposed actions to revitalise rural areas. The paper investigates what young people need and want, their aspirations and ideas, and the solutions they present to policymakers that could attract them back to rural areas. It also explores ways to create and enhance opportunities for rural youth to realise their potential and contribute significantly to their communities, thereby changing the existing narratives about young people in rural areas. Lastly, the policy brief stresses the importance of considering diverse youth perspectives in policymaking to promote inclusive and sustainable rural development in alignment with the Nordic Vision.
