Foots Cray Place (ca. 1754-60) is one of the four noted English villas based on Palladio's Villa Rotonda. Attributions of the design of the villa thus far have been on weak grounds and inconclusive. The discovery of a letter of Matthew Brettingham the Younger and four drawings permit an attribution to Brettingham, who, despite some recognition, has only one remodeling of a country house to his name. Further consideration of the Anglo-Palladian rotondas sustains a more general argument: in moving away from the ideal rigor of the Villa Rotonda, the English houses privilege perception over conception and incorporate the quotidian aspect of the sacred/domestic spectrum. Within the strict limits of the rotonda type, Foots Cray deserves attention for its successful adaptations to site and internal accommodation while reasserting some of the rigor of its precedent villa.

We present the results for the density of states of J = 2 rotons and ν = 1 vibrons in solid (hcp) parahydrogen as well as the joint roton–vibron density of states for noninteracting rotons and vibrons. The width and the shape of the joint roton–vibron density of states agree with those of the Raman and IR spectra in the 4490–4520 cm−1 spectral region lending support to the idea that the latter are due to the Q1(0) + S0(0) double transitions in the fundamental band of solid parahydrogen. However, there are differences between the features of the experimental (Raman and IR) spectra and the joint density of states that indicate that the matrix element effects and perhaps also the effects of interaction between the rotons and the vibrons are important in determining the exact features in these spectra.

Abstract For 56 years, researchers have sought, with varied success, to determine the mass of a roton. However, with the recent emergence of the author's theory of superfluid 4He, the time may soon be at hand when the roton's mass is determined unequivocally. This letter reports the first quantitative results of the new theory of helium II. Using data from a neutron scattering experiment, the mass of a roton was calculated. It was found that the roton mass is 2.12 x 10 -27 kg or approximately 0.32 mHe , where mHe is the mass of a helium atom.

We calculate the probability of the creation of a circular phonon (c-phonon) in He II by a c-photon of the resonator. It is shown that this probability has sharp maxima at frequencies, where the effective group velocity of the c-phonon is equal to zero; the density of states of c-phonons strongly grows at such frequencies. For He II, these frequencies correspond to a roton and a maxon. From theprobability of the c-roton creation, we calculate the roton line width which is found to approximately agree with the experimental one. We conclude that the roton line observed in the super-high-frequency (SHF) absorption spectrum of helium is related to the creation of c-rotons. A possible interpretation of the Stark effect observed for the roton line is also proposed.

Rotons and maxons are local minima and maxima in the frequency-wavenumber spectrum, respectively. They represent wave modes with a vanishing group velocity and a finite phase velocity. Recent advancement showed that roton dispersion relations are not restricted to low-temperature quantum systems but can also be engineered in 3D elastic metamaterials. Here, we report that zero-group-velocity (ZGV) wave modes, similar to rotons and maxons, can be found in elastic waveguide structures with resonators. In addition, we perform parametric study on the parameters of the resonator unit. By tuning the parameters, the roton and maxon may coalesce into a second-order critical point (undulation point or stationary inflection point), where the second derivative of frequency with respect to wavenumber vanishes. This introduces a new non-spreading localized wave mode. Not only is such wave mode non-propogating, but it is also non-diffusing. Inthis case, the highly localized vibration can support energy trapping andenhance the signal-to-noise ratio in wave-based structural health monitoring.

The TL results, furthermore, give criteria by which to assess the relative value of various other documentary sources for the Rotonda, and so indirectly allow an image to appear of what the Rotonda was at its original completion and how it was used.

Among physical systems whose physical properties depend on singularities and display some kind of pattern, superfluids play a quite interesting role, because of their quantum nature: in addition to the usual translation and rotation invariance, their invariance in a global phase change has no classical counterpart. This has rather subtle consequences that will be explored, particularly in reference to the problem of limit speed and to the phenomenology linked to the roton spectrum. Using concepts borrowed from pattern formation theory, one may understand the limit speed as the onset of a kind of Eckhaus instability leading to the formation of topo logical defects. Similarly, the emission of rotons may be viewed as resulting from an instability quite similar to a local Rayleigh-Bénard instability.

The great American satirist, Tom Lehrer, once said (in relative youth) ‘when Mozart was my age, he’d been dead two years’. When Hjalmar Torp began to write about the Rotunda (or Church of St George) in Thessaloniki, this reviewer hadn’t been born for 8 years… Torp’s first contribution to the study of this remarkable and enigmatic building was published in 1954. It was the beginning of a string of discussions. If anyone knows this monument really well, it is the great – now 95-year-old – doyen of Norwegian early Christian archaeology. What he has published here is a beautifully produced and lovingly written summa of a lifetime’s work, with publications spanning French, Norwegian and English over 65 years – a period that included significant events in the lifetime of the building itself, such as the damage of the earthquake of 1978 and the painstaking restorations thereafter. The book is commanding, comprehensive and fundamental, and the addition of a brief typology of the portraits of the saints by the distinguished art historian Bente Kiilerich is welcome (pp. 187-93).

Abstract In the previously proposed Planck aether model of a unified theory, the vacuum ground state consists of a dense assembly of positive and negative Planck masses obeying an exactly nonrelativistic law of motion. The Planck aether is superfluid, and it can without expenditure of energy form a tangle of quantized vortex filamants permitting the transmission of two types of waves: One associated with a symmetric displacement of the vortex lattice leading to gravitational waves, and one associated with an antisymmetric displacement leading to electromagnetic waves. Dirac spinors are explained in this model as excitons made up from positive and negative energy resonances of the vortex lattice.Because the number of positive and negative Planck masses is assumed to be equal, the cosmological constant is equal to zero. With the Dirac spinors formed as bound states from the Planck aether, the sum of the positive kinetic energy and negative gravitational energy must remain exactly equal to zero, resulting in ß = l as the exact value for the cosmological mass parameter.To make up for the unobserved missing mass, estimated to be about 10 times larger than the baryonic mass, it is conjectured that this mass consists of rotons, which in the superfluid Planck aether would come from the cut-off of the energy spectrum near the Planck energy. Because of their unusual dispersion relation, rotons possess a large momentum, even if their velocity vanishes. They are, for this reason, a promising candidate for the nonbaryonic dark matter, combining properties of hot and cold dark matter. The critical value Ω = 1 requires that the number density of the rotons is equal to nr ≃ 2 x 10-25 cm-3 . This value corresponds to an average distance of separation between the rotons of the order nr-1/3 ≃ 6000 km. The small number of rotons per unit volume combined with their weak gravitational coupling constant would make it difficult to detect them directly, but the gravitational field these roton masses generate in the vicinity of galaxies could explain the observed flat rotation curves of disc galaxies.Finally, because the gravitational waves have a cut-off at the vortex lattice scale at 1015 -1016 GeV, there can be no singularity in the course of a gravitational collapse, as it happens for solutions of Einstein's gravitational field equations. A generalization of Einstein's gravitational field Lagrangian, taking into account the existence of a smallest wave length, rather predicts a conversion of all mass into electromagnetic (or gravitational) radiation in approaching the singularity. The predicted conversion of mass into radiation in the course of gravitational collapse may provide an explanation for the large energy release of quasars.

We set out to define the prevalence, clinical features and severity of chronic headache among the affiliates of two groups of general practitioners (GPs) and to illustrate the diagnostic and therapeutic modalities employed. A semistructured questionnaire was completed for 2291 children and adults, seen at office or home consultations over a 6-month period by 44 GPs in two areas of Northern Italy (Varese and Sondrio) and Southern Italy (San Giovanni Rotondo), to assess the presence and the clinical features of chronic headache, the severity of the disease (i.e. the degree of interference with work and daily living activities), the diagnostic work-up, and the main treatment modalities. GPs attempted the classification of headache according to the International Headache Society (IHS) criteria. The sample comprised 910 men and 1381 women aged 2-92 years; 39% of cases reported chronic headache (Varese/Sondrio 40%; San Giovanni Rotondo 38%; men 28%; women 47%). Headache was mostly present for >10 years, with one to three attacks/month lasting 4-24 h. Headache was mild in 18% of cases, moderate in 29%, severe in 24%, and very severe in 29%. Diagnostic assessment and treatment varied in the study areas. Diagnostic work-up, hospital admissions, referral to headache centres, and treatment modalities tended to be correlated with headache severity. The GPs could not classify headache using the IHS categories in 27% of cases (Varese/Sondrio 11%; San Giovanni Rotondo 78%). An inverse correlation was found between case classification and use of subsidiary diagnostic and therapeutic aids. Chronic headache is common among individuals seen in general practice. The patterns of health care use tend to be correlated to its severity. A better knowledge of the IHS criteria may be directly related to lower management costs.

Il presente lavoro si ispira alla Tavola rotonda dal titolo "Psicologo delle cure primarie, Psicologo Scolastico, Accesso alle prestazioni psicologiche nelle Regioni, Bonus Psicologo: urgenza, opportunità e prospettive di realizzazione di una Rete Nazionale di Psicologia del Territorio per la promozione del benessere psicologico", che si è tenuta durante il XIV Con-gresso della Società Italiana di Psicologia della Salute (Cagliari, 25-27 maggio 2023). Lo spa-zio, organizzato e moderato da Paride Braibanti e Francesco Maesano, ha visto la partecipa-zione di diverse figure che hanno contributo al dibattito sulla possibile realizzazione di una rete nazionale di psicologica territoriale e di un Servizio di Psicologia del Territorio, oggetto di una Proposta di Legge di Iniziativa Popolare che ha preso forma in questi mesi. Il presente lavoro ha dunque l'obiettivo di esplicitare le premesse che hanno condotto alla Proposta di Legge prima e all'organizzazione della Tavola rotonda poi, e di riprendere i temi sviluppati nello spazio congressuale, nel tentativo di orientare e meglio focalizzare le coordinate culturali e metodologiche che dovranno trovare posto nella Proposta di Legge.

ABSTRACTThis article demonstrates that the most celebrated building designed by Andrea Palladio, widely known as the Villa Rotonda and begun around 1566, was left only partially constructed at the time of the architect’s death in 1580 and that, as a villa design, it was neither perfect nor ideal. Drawing on detailed records of the construction work carried out in the 1590s, the article shows that much of the villa was constructed or altered after Palladio died, in significant part so as to deal with practical difficulties and deficiencies inherent in the design originally published in Palladio’s treatise. Scholars in general have come to recognise that the Villa Rotonda is something of a palimpsest. However, it has not been properly understood that the building was largely constructed not as an adjusted scheme devised by Palladio, but rather as a strategically revised concept for a villa developed after Palladio’s time by Vincenzo Scamozzi. This preserved something of the original scheme as a hilltop belvedere — especially its outward appearance as a domed and isolated block with four near-identical porticoes — but it adapted what had been built, which was far from complete, to a much more practical vision of the requirements of rural life. What was built during this later period then remained intact until the late eighteenth century.

El objetivo del artículo es recuperar la historia de la Rotonda de Personas Ilustres, un recinto que rinde homenaje a personalidades mexicanas cuya obra ameritó ser reconocido de esta manera y que dentro del arte funerario representa una expresión de gran calidad artística al materializar en sus monumentos una forma de conmemorar a los difuntos, así como un Patrimonio Cultural. El estudio de este tipo de obras ha desarrollado temáticas que van desde la historia de los panteones hasta la descripción e identificación de elementos artísticos de las tumbas. Los rituales y representaciones de la muerte han abierto líneas de investigación que describen y analizan la forma en que cada cultura otorga un lugar para sus muertos. Este texto parte de una línea de investigación dedicada al arte funerario y presenta la historia de la Rotonda, destacando a los personajes que yacen en ella y, basándonos en la tipología de análisis de Ramírez (1980), se describen las ocho tumbas de las únicas mujeres que han sido reconocidas para estar en este lugar; asimismo, se eligieron ocho sepulcros de hombres de reconocida trayectoria para detallar los elementos que hacen de esos espacios obras de arte dignas de recuperarse.

We investigate charged Bose liquid immersed in uniform background charge at zero temperature. Novel phenomena, such as oscillatory shielding of external localized electric charge, rotons and charge density waves (charge stripes in two dimensions), occur in any dimensions. Oscillatory shielding is caused by mixing between scalar boson exchange and Coulomb interactions, which mediate opposite forces. On the other hand, rotons and charge density waves are due to attractive local self-interaction of bosons. Rotons can be regarded as a finite size charge density wave packet without any back flow. We also comment on charge stripes observed recently in cuprates and nickelates.

El arbolado de los parques son actualmente los sumideros naturales dentro de las ciudades. Esta investigación buscó estimar cuanto carbono fija el arbolado de los parques urbanos “La Rotonda” del cantón Portoviejo y “La Madre” del cantón Manta. Para estimar la captura de CO2 en biomasa viva de los árboles se utilizó ecuaciones alométricas propuestas por Chave (2005), quien describe diversas ecuaciones según la naturaleza de las especies a evaluar. Se tomaron datos de riqueza, abundancia, variables dendométricas (diámetro a la altura del pecho (DAP) y altura). La densidad de la madera se obtuvo de bases de datos públicas y literatura externa. El parque La Rotonda obtuvo una captura total de carbono de 247 748,14 Kg el cual estuvo conformado por un 70% de individuos con afinidad al bosque húmedo. El parque de La Madre se estimó una captura de CO2 de 36 555,78 Kg, siendo un 90% de los individuos propios de bosque húmedo. Los resultados demuestran que el potencial de los parques para captar carbono dependerá principalmente del tipo de especie que los compongan. Es recomendable que en el diseño de los parques también se consideren además del aspecto paisajístico los servicios ecosistémicos que estos pueden brindar.
