Streszczenie:
Abstract Richelia is a widespread, heterocystous, N2-fixing cyanobacterium that occurs in oligotrophic seas. It can be symbiotic within rhizosolenoid hosts, including Rhizosolenia (R-R) and Guinardia (G-R), and occasionally occurs as free-living (FL-R) filaments. We investigated the Richelia abundances in the South China (SCS) and Philippine Seas (PS) during the northeast (NEM) and southwest monsoon (SWM) seasons between 2001 and 2016. Field results showed that G-R was most abundant in the SCS during the SWM. Both R-R and FL-R were more abundant in the PS than the SCS and during the SWM versus the NEM. In general, R-R were more abundant than G-R, except at the SCS-SWM stations where abundances were comparable. Multivariate statistical models indicate that as R-R and G-R were abundant in warmer seawaters, nitrate plus nitrite was a key factor negatively controlling R-R abundance while silicate was more positively related to G-R. Positive correlation between G-R and FL-R abundances and microscopic observations imply that like Rhizosolenia-associated Richelia, filaments released from Guinardia hosts can remain viable outside their diatom hosts for time periods on the order of days. Overall, results reveal different distribution patterns between the two rhizosolenoid-Richelia symbioses and both G-R and R-R likely contribute to FL-R in the field.

Symbiotic diatom-diazotrophic cyanobacteria association (DDA) of Rhizosolenia hebetata and Rhizosolenia formosa with endosymbiotic cyanobacteria Richelia intracellularis was noticed and documented for the first time during a bloom of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium erythraeum in the oligotrophic shelf waters along Kochi and Mangalore transects, southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS), during spring intermonsoon (April 2012). Although the host is frequently seen, the symbiont is rarely reported in the Indian EEZ. The presence of nitrogen-fixing symbiotic association of Rhizosolenia-Richelia along with Trichodesmium erythraeum highlights the significance of DDAs on the nutrient and energy budgets of phytoplankton in the oligotrophic environments of the Arabian Sea during spring intermonsoon.

Shoot cultures of hypericin non-producing H. calycinum L. (primitive Ascyreia section), hypericin-producing H. perforatum L., H. tetrapterum Fries (section Hypericum) and H. richeri Vill. (the evolutionarily most advanced section Drosocarpium in our study) were developed and investigated for their growth, development, hypericin content and endogenous phytohormone levels. Hypericins in wild-growing H. richeri significantly exceeded those in H. perforatum and H. tetrapterum. H. richeri also had the highest hypericin productivity in vitro in medium supplemented with 0.2 mg/L N6-benzyladenine and 0.1 mg/L indole-3-butyric acid and H. tetrapterum—the lowest one in all media modifications. In shoot culture conditions, the evolutionarily oldest H. calycinum had the highest content of salicylic acid and total jasmonates in some of its treatments, as well as dominance of the storage form of abscisic acid (ABA-glucose ester) and lowest cytokinin ribosides and cytokinin O-glucosides as compared with the other three species. In addition, the evolutionarily youngest H. richeri was characterized by the highest total amount of cytokinin ribosides. Thus, both evolutionary development and the hypericin production capacity seemed to interact closely with the physiological parameters of the plant organism, such as endogenous phytohormones, leading to the possible hypothesis that hypericin productivity may have arisen in the evolution of Hypericum as a means to adapt to environmental changes.

ABSTRACTThe survival, height and leaf production of seedlings and juveniles of Aspidosperma fendleri and Richena grandis were measured monthly for three years after germination. During the first year, some seedlings and juveniles of Aspidosperma fendleri were collected and the number of rootlets, the primary root length and the shoot: root ratio were determined. Both species show periodicity in growth but their relative growth rate differs between species. For Aspidosperma fendleri, the highest relative growth rate (0.313 y-1) was found for individuals grown under greenhouse conditions followed by individuals growing in an old forest gap (0.143 y-1) and finally individuals under the forest canopy (0.137 y-1). For Richeria grandis, the relative growth rate under the forest canopy was 0.261 y-1. Leaf production for Aspidosperma fendleri in the forest (natural conditions) was 4.39 total mean leaf number for five years and 5.46 total mean leaf number under greenhouse conditions. For Richeria grandis it was 5.34 mean leaf production for four years. The root: shoot ratio for Aspidosperma fendleri was constant during the observation year. Aspidosperma fendleri showed a lower number of rootlets than did Richeria grandis. There was an inverse relationship between growth and survival during the dry season. During this period, mortality was higher and the highest mortality occurred during the first year when the total relative growth rate was highest.Slow growth is evident in both species. This mechanism may represent an adaptive advantage to remain dormant until there is an opening in the forest canopy. Since the seeds of Aspidosperma fendleri and Richeria grandis are highly vulnerable to predators and pathogens, slow growth as seedlings and juveniles allows them to survive, and contributes to regeneration in cloud forest.

Oil extracts of flowering tops of Hypericum richeri Vill. prepared in three different ways were evaluated for chemical composition, and Anti-inflammatory and Gastroprotective activities. An HPLC method was developed for determination of two dominant flavonoids, quercetin and I3,II8-biapigenin. The carrageenan-induced rat paw edema test was used for screening the antiinflammatory activity, while indomethacin-induced rat gastric mucosa damage test was used for evaluation of gastroprotective activity. The oil extract prepared by maceration with 96% ethanol, followed by extraction with sunflower oil by heating on a water bath, exhibited the highest antiinflammatory (38.4 %) and gastroprotective activities (gastric damage score of 0.9). The same oil extract had the highest content of quercetin (49 μg/mL) and I3,II8-biapigenin (60 μg/mL). These results approve the usage of oil extracts of H. richeri as an antiinflammatory and gastroprotective agent.

DNA barcoding has been used as a universal tool for phylogenetic inferences and diversity assessments, especially in poorly studied species and regions. The aim of this study was to contrast morphological taxonomy and DNA barcoding, using the three frequently used markers matK, rbcL, and trnL-F, to assess the efficiency of DNA barcoding in the identification of dipterocarps in Sumatra, Indonesia. The chloroplast gene matK was the most polymorphic among these three markers with an average interspecific genetic distance of 0.020. The results of the molecular data were mostly in agreement with the morphological identification for the clades of Anthoshorea, Hopea, Richetia, Parashorea, and Anisoptera, nonetheless these markers were inefficient to resolve the relationships within the Rubroshorea group. The maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenies identified Shorea as a paraphyletic genus, Anthoshorea appeared as sister to Hopea, and Richetia was sister to Parashorea. A better discriminatory power among dipterocarp species provided by matK and observed in our study suggests that this marker has a higher evolutionary rate than the other two markers tested. However, a combination of several different barcoding markers is essential for reliable identification of the species at a lower taxonomic level.

Twenty-two brachiopod species belonging to 19 genera have been recognized in the material collected during two cruises, Norfolk 1 and Norfolk 2, to the Norfolk Ridge south of New Caledonia, at depths of 180 to 1150 m. Thirteen species are reported for the first time from this locality, while four genera, Aulites, Septicollarina, Annuloplatidia and Campages, are noted for the first time from the New Caledonian region. Thecidellina minuta is recorded for the first time from the Pacific. Four new species are described ― Cryptopora norfolkensis sp. nov., Aulites crosnieri sp. nov., Septicollarina zezinae sp. nov. and Annuloplatidia richeri sp. nov. The distribution of the particular species and their abundance vary considerably between the 15 sampled seamounts, with Stenosarina crosnieri and Fallax neocaledonensis being most widely distributed, and the seamount Crypthelia having the highest biodiversity. The seamount brachiopods show considerable affinity to the brachiopods of adjacent regions, and only three species ― C. norfolkensis, A. crosnieri and A. richeri ― can be regarded as potential endemics. The brachiopod fauna is more similar to that in the area around Fiji than to that around Australasia.

Japanese emoticons are widely used to express users' feelings and intentions in social media, blogs and instant messages. Japanese smartphone keypads have a feature that shows a list of emoticons, enabling users to insert emoticons simply by touching them. However, this list of emoticons contains more than 200, which is difficult to choose from, so a method to reorder the list and recommend appropriate emoticons to users is necessary. This paper proposes an emoticon recommendation method based on the emotive statements of users and their past selections of emoticons. The system is comprised of an affect analysis system and an original emoticon database: a table of 59 emoticons numerically categorized by 10 emotion types. The authors' experiments showed that 73.0% of chosen emoticons were among the top five recommended by the system, which is an improvement of 43.5% over the method used in current smartphones, which is based only on users' past emoticon selections.

GC/FID and GC/MS analysis of the isolated essential oils revealed 64 compounds representing 94.7% and 98.2% of the total oils. Predominant constituents in both samples were: germacrene D (10.9%; 6.0%), bicyclogermacrene (4.7%; 3.5%), α-pinene (6.8%; 6.9%), β-pinene (8.1%; 5.1%), decanoic acid (4.5%; 6.8%), β-caryophyllene (3.3%; 7.5%), δ-cadinene (7.0%; 4.4%), spathulenol (6.0%; 9.5%) and tetracosane (3.1%; 5.8%). Comparison of both samples revealed similarity in the chemical composition with minor fluctuations of constituent percentages. The chemical profile of Croatian oils was in general similar to those reported for other geographic areas regarding major mono- and sesquiterpene constituents. However, spathulenol, 5-cadinene and bicyclogermacrene were more abundant in Croatian oils. The presence of decanoic acid (4.5%; 6.8%) in Croatian oils was the major difference between acids and fatty acids derivatives. Higher abundance of alkanes (particularly tetracosane and docosane) was also noticed.

The aim of this study was to observe the responses of the invertebrate shredders to different species of leaf litters (Experiment 1: Talauma ovata and Inga laurina ; Experiment 2: Talauma ovata, Inga laurina and Richeria grandis ) under gradual temperature rise (24 °C, 26 °C, 28 °C, 30 °C, 32 °C), in the presence (Experiment 2) and absence (Experiment1) of fish (Astyanax sp.) carcasses, as well as to observe the possible consequences of the leaf mass loss (LML). The results from the first experiment suggest that the quality of the litter was capable of changing the feeding preference of the invertebrate shredders, regardless of temperature. In the second experiment, the leaf mass loss was faster in litter with higher quality (Talauma ovate and Richeria grandis ); in addition, we observed that the exploration of these resources resulted in the case-building in the presence of fish carcass. The negative correlation of leaf mass loss of Inga laurina in relation to temperature in the presence of fish carcass probably occurred due to an accelerated metabolic, respiratory and cardiac rates. Apparently, this process may have led to an increased shredding activity on the litters of better quality in relation to the Inga laurina. This fact may be related to less energy consumption, so as to meet their energy demands more efficiently.

Streszczenie:
Diatom–diazotroph associations (DDAs) are symbioses where trichome-forming cyanobacteria support the host diatom with fixed nitrogen through dinitrogen (N2) fixation. It is inferred that the growth of the trichomes is also supported by the host, but the support mechanism has not been fully quantified. Here, we develop a coarse-grained, cellular model of the symbiosis between Hemiaulus and Richelia (one of the major DDAs), which shows that carbon (C) transfer from the diatom enables a faster growth and N2 fixation rate by the trichomes. The model predicts that the rate of N2 fixation is 5.5 times that of the hypothetical case without nitrogen (N) transfer to the host diatom. The model estimates that 25% of fixed C from the host diatom is transferred to the symbiotic trichomes to support the high rate of N2 fixation. In turn, 82% of N fixed by the trichomes ends up in the host. Modeled C fixation from the vegetative cells in the trichomes supports only one-third of their total C needs. Even if we ignore the C cost for N2 fixation and for N transfer to the host, the total C cost of the trichomes is higher than the C supply by their own photosynthesis. Having more trichomes in a single host diatom decreases the demand for N2 fixation per trichome and thus decreases their cost of C. However, even with five trichomes, which is about the highest observed for Hemiaulus and Richelia symbiosis, the model still predicts a significant C transfer from the diatom host. These results help quantitatively explain the observed high rates of growth and N2 fixation in symbiotic trichomes relative to other aquatic diazotrophs.

Samples of nominal composition Fe50Co50 were produced by mechanical alloying byusing a planetary ball mill and different milling times. The samples were studied via X-raydiffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize thephase distribution resulting from the milling process. The Mössbauer data indicated that Co startsdiffusing into Fe after 8 h of milling. Between t = 8h and t = 24 h the sample has a heterogeneouscomposition, presenting a bimodal hyperfine field distribution with maxima centred at 34.3 T and35.8 - 36.4 T, compatible with the presence of different Fe environments (richer in Co and richerin Fe, respectively). After 48 h of milling, the sample presents a more homogeneous compositionshowing an almost symmetric hyperfine magnetic field distribution centred at H=34.9 T,indicating that a disordered equiatomic FeCo solid solution has already been formed. The X-rayphotoelectron spectroscopy data indicate that the native oxide layer formed on the freshly milledsamples contains Co2+, Fe2+ and Fe3+ oxides. After complete removal of this native oxide layer byAr ion bombardment, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis yields the composition of thenominal equiatomic Fe50Co50 alloy.

Streszczenie:
Nitrogen fixers (diazotrophs) are often an important nitrogen source to phytoplankton nutrient budgets in N-limited marine environments. Diazotrophic symbioses between cyanobacteria and diatoms can dominate nitrogen-fixation regionally, particularly in major river plumes and in open ocean mesoscale blooms. This study reports the successful isolation and growth in monocultures of multiple strains of a diatom-cyanobacteria symbiosis from the Gulf of Mexico using a modified artificial seawater medium. We document the influence of light and nutrients on nitrogen fixation and growth rates of the host diatom Hemiaulus hauckii Grunow together with its diazotrophic endosymbiont Richelia intracellularis Schmidt, as well as less complete results on the Hemiaulus membranaceus-R. intracellularis symbiosis. The symbioses rates reported here are for the joint diatom-cyanobacteria unit. Symbiont diazotrophy was sufficient to support both the host diatom and cyanobacteria symbionts, and the entire symbiosis replicated and grew without added nitrogen. Maximum growth rates of multiple strains of H. hauckii symbioses in N-free medium with N2 as the sole N source were 0.74–0.93 div d−1. Growth rates followed light saturation kinetics in H. hauckii symbioses with a growth compensation light intensity (EC) of 7–16 µmol m−2s−1and saturation light level (EK) of 84–110 µmol m−2s−1. Nitrogen fixation rates by the symbiont while within the host followed a diel pattern where rates increased from near-zero in the scotophase to a maximum 4–6 h into the photophase. At the onset of the scotophase, nitrogen-fixation rates declined over several hours to near-zero values. Nitrogen fixation also exhibited light saturation kinetics. Maximum N2 fixation rates (84 fmol N2 heterocyst−1h−1) in low light adapted cultures (50 µmol m−2s−1) were approximately 40–50% of rates (144–154 fmol N2 heterocyst−1h−1) in high light (150 and 200 µmol m−2s−1) adapted cultures. Maximum laboratory N2 fixation rates were ~6 to 8-fold higher than literature-derived field rates of the H. hauckii symbiosis. In contrast to published results on the Rhizosolenia-Richelia symbiosis, the H. hauckii symbiosis did not use nitrate when added, although ammonium was consumed by the H. hauckii symbiosis. Symbiont-free host cell cultures could not be established; however, a symbiont-free H. hauckii strain was isolated directly from the field and grown on a nitrate-based medium that would not support DDA growth. Our observations together with literature reports raise the possibility that the asymbiotic H. hauckii are lines distinct from an obligately symbiotic H. hauckii line. While brief descriptions of successful culture isolation have been published, this report provides the first detailed description of the approaches, handling, and methodologies used for successful culture of this marine symbiosis. These techniques should permit a more widespread laboratory availability of these important marine symbioses.

Streszczenie:
It is almost twenty years since Branko Grünbaum lamented that the ‘original sin’ in the theory of polyhedra is that from Euclid onwards “the writers failed to define what are the ‘polyhedra’ among which they are finding the ‘regular’ ones” ([1, p. 43]). Various definitions of ‘regular’ can be found in the literature with a condition of convexity often included (e.g. [2, p. 301], [3, p. 77], [4, p. 47], [5, p. 435], [6, p. 16]). The condition of convexity is usually cited to exclude regular self-intersecting polyhedra, i.e. the Kepler-Poinsot polyhedra, such as the ‘great dodecahedron’ consisting of twelve intersecting pentagonal faces shown in Figure 1 with one face shaded. Richeson also notes ([4, pp. 47-48]) that, for a particular definition of ‘regular’, convexity is needed to exclude the ‘punched-in’ icosahedron shown in Figure 2.

Streszczenie:
The filamentous marine cyanobacterium Trichodesmium forms extensive blooms in tropical seas, where it plays an important role in nitrogen fixation. This study investigated Trichodesmium-associated phytoplankton in the Eastern Arabian Sea (EAS) during bloom and nonbloom conditions. Trichodesmium blooms over the continental shelf primarily comprised of T. erythraeum and T. thiebautii during the Spring Inter Monsoon (SIM) and T. erythraeum during the Winter Monsoon (WM). T. erythreaum blooms have rarely been reported from the north-east Arabian Sea during WM. Trichomes comprised of 143-1552 cells during the WM, with filaments ranging from 1339 to 13163 µm in length. Non-diazotrophic groups like diatoms and dinoflagellates were associated with Trichodesmium during both seasons within the bloom waters. The study found a novel symbiotic relationship between the heterocystous diazotroph Richelia intracellularis and Nitzschia sicula during WM blooms. This research expands knowledge of lesser-known phytoplankton species and their associations in the EAS.
