Streszczenie:
Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) Tags have become quite widespread in many services in the industry such as access control, parcel and document tracking, distribution logistics, automotive systems, and livestock or pet tracking. In these applications, a wireless communication link is provided between a remote transponder (antenna and integrated circuit (IC)) and an interrogator or reader. A suitable antenna for these tags must have low cost, low profile and especially small size whereas the bandwidth requirement (few kilohertz to megahertz) is less critical. In this document, methods to reduce tag size, the performance optimization of the tag by using novel antenna matching techniques for increased operational bandwidth and gain/radiation pattern/radiation efficiency improvement are introduced for 13.56 MHz HF and 915 MHz UHF RFID tags.In addition, an evaluation of an active 915 MHz UHF RFID field study for container tracking at the port of Savannah, GA is also presented.

Streszczenie:
The objective of the proposed research is to develop solutions for High-Performance Low-Cost Passives for Radar, Identification, and Communication Applications up to mm-Wave Frequencies. This research will bring to the table potential solutions that will meet three main requirements: small size (or low weight), high performance, and low cost. This research embarks on antenna design and development for passive RFID tags on LCP substrates, and then a transition towards lower cost modules investigates and explores the possibilities of using paper as RF substrates with inkjet printing as a low cost fabrication technology. Modules such as dual band antenna for Wifi frequencies (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and UWB (up to 10GHz) on paper substrate using inkjet printing are presented. This work then bridges into developing higher frequency modules. These include: highly selective filter design on LCP for X-band Radar application to be used as a benchmark for an easy adjustment for higher frequencies, and antenna modules LCP using inkjet printing for communication such as mm-Wave WLAN or WPAN. A transition into mm-Wave Modules then takes place for the general realization of low-cost high-performance mm-Wave modules and more specifically the low cost automotive radar. After proposing an architecture for integrated mm-Wave module, this work then investigates 2D/3D interconnections (and their integration with antennas) on LCP using conventional etching design guidelines up to 100GHz. Antenna arrays that are implemented with phase shifters for beam steering are then designed using edge fed and multilayer technology. Furthermore, crosstalk reductions for highly dense transmission lines are analyzed via simulations for the optimum performance and space saving of such mm-Wave modules such as the IC interface where space restrictions are strictly enforced.

The purpose of this thesis is to help Varian Semiconductor Equipment Associates, Inc. (VSEA) to smooth the production and reduce the manufacturing cost. Without an efficient way to track on its high-value components, VSEA thereby spends hundreds of thousands of dollars to respond to customers' fraudulent claims and adds extra burdens to manufacturing teams. RFID system is introduced to improve the traceability of high-value components. By physically applying a RFID tag on a component and associating the tag with necessary information of the component, VSEA is able to avoid accepting a fraudulent claim by providing reliable and accurate record for a particular component. After testing different types of RFID tags and various checking system setups, the RFID system is verified feasible to be implemented in the high-value component tracking. Specially, a guideline of tag placements on different components is generated for reference in further implementation.

I dagsläget används tekniken mest i Asien.
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a contactless short distance (approximately 10 centimeters) communication technology, which conveys a more secure connection. NFC is a relatively young technology which is cheap to implement, and user-friendly. NFC is directed to mainly cellphones, where opportunities for implementation of applications are wide. The technology conveys a faster and easier exchange of information, by putting units side by side. At present, the technology is used mostly in Asia. In Europe, no major effort has begun yet, but is expected to. NFC is expected to exist in a majority of cellphones, in the future. This essay treats practical implementation of a “toolbox” with the NFC technology. The goal was to make a “toolbox” with different components. The “toolbox” is intended as a base for implementing NFC applications and for experimenting with the different components. The hardware components are: cellphone, a tag, a RFID module and a microprocessor. The program components consist of a number of code examples. Our work has resulted in three prototypes which together constitute a “toolbox”. The prototypes communicate between any combinations of the components in the “toolbox”: cellphone with tag, reader with tag and reader with cellphone.

Abstract Microstrip planar antennas are popular in recently because of its compactness and fabrication easily, and it integrates with circuits easily. In this thesis, we design several conventional macrostrip antennas and a two-stage low noise amplifier (LNA) which are reported to fit with 2.4GHz ISM band or 2.45GHz active RFID system. For the low noise amplifier, it exhibits low voltage, low noise, and high gain. And then, we integrate the microstrip antenna and low noise amplifier into a active RFID module. In addition, a novel design of active RFID module is developed. It shows the wideband frequency response is between 2.2 to 2.5 GHz when return loss less than -10dB. Moreover, the maximum antenna gain is larger than 4 dBi. In particular, we have obtained the total gain about 19 dBi in the antenna and active circuit possessing low noise amplifier (LNA), and the result is very simple impedance matching and simple mechanical construction. The reports of such experiments are presented in this thesis.

This paper proposes a remotely controlled interactive game playing system on a handset of RFID module; it integrates RFID-based accelerometers and rate gyros on a RFID tag handset, the tag can communicate with a RFID reader (nRF9E5) linked with a PC, such that one can develop games, software and interface on PC, and play interactive game by using the handset and its gesture. So that it is different from the Nintendo game player (Wii), the cost of hardware and software can be decreased without the license limitations. On the other hand, this system can not only be applied for remote home care of indoor positioning and guidance, but be monitored via RFID reader or the web network. For example by using the RFID tag to transmit the accelerations and angular turning rates embedded on the person to a RFID receiver and then this monitor station can derive the person’s coordinates and orientations to be monitored. Besides, the monitor station can uplink these data to a wireless page to provide the position and guidance information to the mobile phone user. By the way the other people can also monitor the person’s motion status on the web, if there is any emergency problem such as falling down, and then they can take proper actions right away to support the person under help and monitoring.

This thesis presents RFTouchPads, a system of batteryless and wireless modular hardware designs of two-dimensional (2D) touch sensor pads based on the ultra-high frequency (UHF) radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. In this system, multiple RFID IC chips are connected to an antenna in parallel. Each chip connects only one of its endpoints to the antenna; hence, the module normally turns off when it gets insufficient energy to operate. When a finger touches the circuit trace attached to another endpoint of the chip, the finger functions as part of the antenna that turns the connected chip on, while the finger touch location is determined according to the chip''s ID. Based on this principle, we propose two hardware designs, namely, StickerPad and TilePad. StickerPad is a flexible 3x3 touch-sensing pad suitable for applications on curved surfaces such as the human body. TilePad is a modular 3x3 touch-sensing pad that supports the modular area expansion by tiling and provides a more flexible deployment because its antenna is folded. Our implementation allows 2D touch inputs to be reliability detected 2 m away from a remote antenna of an RFID reader. The proposed batteryless, wireless, and modular hardware design enables fine-grained and less-constrained 2D touch inputs in various ubiquitous computing applications.

Application Level Events (ALE) middleware plays an important role in the EPCglobal infrastructure. A middleware communicates with the radio frequency identification (RFID) readers and RFID applications. When tag data are captured, the middleware will translate the tag data into enterprise meaningful information with filtering and aggregating operations which are the two main objectives of the middleware. A middleware does not only perform the filering and aggregation of tag data, but also manages physical readers effectively. The purpose of a middleware is to reduce RFID application complexity and to increase the effectness of hardware management. This thesis describes how to design and implement a reader control module for ALE middleware, thus, we propose two system characteristics, reader extensibility and system scalablity, to enhance the middleware. We define a Customized Reader API Engine to convert the communication command to general customized readers operation such as Alien ALR9800, MTI reader, etc. furthermore, Low Level Reader Protocol (LLRP) that ratified by EPCglobal had been implemented. LLRP provides operation timing control and command parameters accessing. Systems with bounded resources will become completely saturated under increased I/O load. Thus, system scalability is an important capability of our enhanced middleware. A Reader Control Module can map to a group of RFID readers, a group of Reader Control Modules correspond to a preprocessor, the purpose of preprocessor is process resource dispatching. we could separate the I/O work into different Reader Control Modules.

Currently RFID is being used in variety of industry for managing and controlling internal and external supply chain especially. Due to system setup costs or other reasons, only international enterprise and big size company have been using in internal/external supply chain and monitoring person/material. Some studies have been also made in RFID academically. Temperature logging RFID tag is costly compared to other RFID Tag. What cost-effective alternatives are there when we want to record temperature by RFID system ﹖ This research offers an alternative proposal that is cost-effective RFID with temperature-recording function . The investment in RFID tag is not as expensive as temperature logging RFID tag. We combine short-range, 13MHz passive RFID tag that has least cost of Tag with temperature sensor module as one module . This module can record variations of temperature in internal area. Finally, we make a comparison of the cost versus the benefit expected between this module and KSW VarioSen® Basic Label.

Module''s group of the radio frequency (RF) can be regarded as the part of the circuit with supreme simplest and technological aspect in the communication system. It determines systematic using the channel, Transmission distance, signal quality and receiving the sensitivity etc. So, the efficiency of module group RF will influence and receive and transmits the quality of the signal. In thesis is being probed into and utilizing traditional wireless communication platform technology mainly, to realize a new developing module group, which the Active RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is presented at operating frequency in 2.45GHz. And utilize the advantage of its small, low cost, come to finish "the entrance guard identification the system automatically". With the efficiency of ADS software has simulated the Active RFID module group at first in the article. And then we can finish and realize such as LNA, PLL, PA, HPF, Transmission Line and Antenna with the general wireless communication module group. In general, a lot of manufacturers, in order to use the foreign professional specification stipulated of organization, and buy its patent right, this not merely causes very great burden on cost, to the target using it when not needing such a strong function too, waste to some extent on function demand. This designs the application frequency band of this radio frequency circuit in ISM frequency band, and the main component that its LNA uses is START540, which have low-voltage, low electric current, high power gain, its suitable to can up to 20dB to gain, and the noise figure index can get to 3.5dB small. And can use START540 to have in the choice of VCO component, what this crystal can be oscillated in a very large range, so long as utilize the oscillated slot of passive form properly, can reach the final frequency of the demand relaxed. In the designs of microstrip line and high-pass filter, we can design the demand goal out first, and then undergo the adjustment and confirmation of ADS simulation software. In PA design respect, because power amplifier of high frequency pay attention to dispel the heat and power consumption relatively, so we adopt ready-made chip UP2006 directly, use the module group of this chip to come and combine systematically. Through the research and development in this thesis, we can get the Active RFID module of new generation that one group accords with 2.45GHz frequency band, utilize the communication code specification designed by oneself afterwards, to realize that the whole entrance guard identification the system automatically. In addition, this thesis directs against the advantages of the Active RFID module too, have done a detailed classification and introduction. Hope to use the idea of traditional wireless communication platform technology, to realize the Active RFID module. Generally modulation and transmission the signal with ASK or FSK, and then we design transmits the protocol to finish with ASK. Furthermore, we have gone still one step further to design the terminal end of the Active RFID module and can be connected to the general switch system, as a detectable the system of examining to use. Pass this and research and develop and after assessing, ranges of applications of the Active RFID module are more extensive. So is at Active RFID not merely module group part on the future open a lot of potentialities of research and development of, no matter complexity, transmitting, circuit of itself from, degree not power consumptive, etc., can make the module group of each block into by way of IC circuit and appear, can be also expected to offer more small and more low-priced Active RFID module. The Active RFID module can apply in the future various kinds of are detected on the system of examining, for instance the vehicle passes in and out and controls system, storage goods administrative system, administrative system of books information, etc..

This thesis presents an antenna module and a digital logic circuit for applying to the Reader of RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) System. The ALR-9780 Reader, software and tags produced by Alien Company are from III (Institute For Information Industry). Due to the high cost of the 4-port Reader and its antenna, as well as its limited transmission power, we therefore bring up four modules to improve the original system. Firstly, we investigate the design of 915 MHz RFID Reader Antenna, expecting to transform the Alien’s Reader Antenna into smaller volume and lower cost. It contains the design of circular polarization and finds out the correlation between antenna gain and different substrate materials. Finally, we provide a new concept of fractal, and find the correlation about antenna gain, antenna spectrum and the space-filling properties of the fractal geometry. Secondly, we investigate a multiplex-switching module and power controller module in order to devise a digital logic circuit to control the SPDT switches and choose any antenna, and then tune the radiation power by using an adjustable attenuator. Finally, the remote connecting system is achieved by the use of the PIC_Server, and a PC-based control interface has also been developed. We expect these concepts can thoroughly improve the performance of the original RFID system to meet desired requirement actually.

Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is a complicated system with high concurrency. During operations, there are several machines operating at the same time. Design and development of cell controller can solve the complex system problems. It’s not easy to construct a fine cell controller. To show concurrency apparently, solve conflict events, and analyze the whole system, this research adopts Colored Petri Net (CPN) on constructing and analyzing models. Firstly, we analyze FMS structure and coordinate communications from cell controller to workstation level, and then to machine level by hierarchical distributed control system. Furthermore, we create modular CPN models for different types of equipment machines with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). In order to design the well-performance controller, it is necessary to encode the RFID tags and construct the modules which can simulate the real state operating of manufacturing situations. For tracking the real time status of WIP, we write the data which according to color tokens of CPN into tags when processing operation is finished. The program of cell controller was written after using PACE software to analyze some properties of CPN models. The purpose of research is to construct FMS cell controller in a short time for monitoring the operation of manufacturing industry as for real-time online monitoring system. To verify the method of constructed modules, we implement the program with real machines at Manufacturing Execution System Lab, National Taipei University of Technology. IEEE Human activity recognition from sensor data is a critical research topic to achieve remote health monitoring and ambient assisted living (AAL). In AAL, sensors are integrated into conventional objects aimed to support targets capabilities through digital environments that are sensitive, responsive and adaptive to human activities. Emerging technological paradigms to support AAL within the home or community setting offers people the prospect of a more individually focused care and improved quality of living. In the present work, an ambient human activity classification framework that augments information from the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) of passive RFID tags to obtain detailed activity profiling is proposed. Key indices of position, orientation, mobility, and degree of activities which are critical to guide reliable clinical management decisions using 4 volunteers are employed to simulate the research objective. A two-layer, fully connected sequence long short-term memory recurrent neural network model (LSTM RNN) is employed. The LSTM RNN model extracts the feature of RSS from the sensor data and classifies the sampled activities using SoftMax. The performance of the LSTM model is evaluated for different data size and the hyper-parameters of the RNN are adjusted to optimal states, which results in an accuracy of 98.18%. The proposed framework suits well for smart health and smart homes which offers pervasive sensing environment for the elderly, persons with disability and chronic illness.

A thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) is the top output property in Taiwan, which is also the major supplier to the entire world. The after-production of TFT-LCD module factory is going through a Make to Order system. That is to say, physic supplies of a module factory will be distributed to three major distributions — purchase, production and shipment. Therefore, how to reduce the time of physical distribution for the module factory to cut down the lead time of production has become one of the most competitive conditions among the TFT-LCD industries. According to the interviews with some cases and documental researches, we have come to analyze the reason why nowadays the time of physical distribution delays is because the data inspection of physical supplies from receiving orders to shipment is being processed and controlled by manpower and bar-code document. Our research believed that the length of inspection and process towards physical supplies will be the major factor for physical distribution. Therefore, we bring up the idea that the inspective system of receiving, production, quality and shipment should be integrated with the data of physical supplies on the spot and the data of enterprise controlling system. The concept of the integration used in the research is to integrate the technique of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) with the system of Enterprise Resource Planning, then customize a module of automation management of material information. Module is applied to the examination of materials and supplies in the module factory. The altering information of materials and supplies will be shown on the information system based on the RFID system; consequently, the examination can be grasped immediately. The result shows that there is an evident effect of shortening for the logistic time for materials and supplies. As the more materials and supplies are examined, the more evident shortening of logistic time would be.

This thesis presents the design methodology of multi-mode RF module for WLAN and WCDMA mobile communications. By starting from system specifications, a novel multi-mode RF module is determined and sub-circuit specifications are obtained. The multi-mode receiver fully integrates the advantages of direct conversion and heterodyne conversion architecture where IEEE 802.11 b/g and WCDMA mode use the direct conversion and IEEE 802.11a uses the heterodyne conversion. The second part of this thesis is on the design of two types of low-noise amplifier RFICs with TSMC 0.18 μm 1p6m process. The first type is a folded-cascode gain-variable LNA, which can be operated with as low as 1 V drain supply. The measured gain is 10 dB, with 17 dB tuning range, the input P1dB is -25.9 dBm, and noise figure is 5.2 dB, where it consumes below 10mW. The another dual-band CMOS LNA for 802.11a/b/g applications, employs the switched output matching network to achieve dual-band gain.

This thesis explores the methodologies used in the design and implementation of a RF front end circuit for a transmission system working at 2.45 GHz. The transceiver system is realized in an application of a wireless full color LED array display. In full color display technologies, the RGB LEDs are typically driven with a current source, which allows for uniformity in the brightness of the display. From the perspective of RF communications, RF circuit design applied the transmission line theory and various types of simulation tools to establish the optimal circuit performance and stability. The transceiver system described here uses the super-heterodyne architecture operating in the 2.45 GHz ISM frequency band. The design methodology begins with the initial prototyping and simulations of software implementations. The circuit operation parameters are then obtained post measurement and extensive testing which have been further tuned to obtain the optimal circuit performance. Finally, system integration is performed to realize the wireless full color LED module system. The typical modules in the RF front end system are composed of low noise amplifier (LNA), local oscillator, mixer, band pass filter, and power amplifier. The START540 is a transistor that has low power consumption, high gain, as well as low noise characteristics. These characteristics well are suited for the application of LNA designing. A cascaded two stage architecture was designed for the receiver. After testing, the forward gain was measured to be at least 25dB, with a noise figure of 2.1dB. Its application on the receiver side has also shown good performance. The transistor of START540 was also used in the design of the active single end mixer circuit. The conversion gain has been measured to be approximately 5~8 dB. The measurement of power amplifier has the gain about 15dB and the OIP3 about 25dBm.The design of the local oscillator was based around the LMX2531, which includes a fully integrated phase lock loop (PLL) and voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). This approach greatly reduced the complexity of the transceiver system. The focus of this research lies in the exploration of the concepts, analysis and design of RF circuit design. With the aid of simulation programs in the calculation and prototyping procedure, performance parameters were able to be optimized. This allowed the overall time required in the design process to be shortened. After the modular integration of the wireless front end with the full color LED display, it was shown that this implementation makes a practical design. A separate chapter will be dedicated to the design of a passive switch type mixer. A RFIC is prototyped in software, however using the ADS simulation tools to estimate various operating parameters of the IC. The software design is based on the fabrication using TSMC 0.35 μm. In the future, the RF front end of the transceiver systems will be constantly refined, with room for constant improvement, this is not restricted to circuit complexity, transmission range, or even the realization of RF front end systems using the RFIC approach. All of these can provide as possible motivations for further research and development.
