Pełny tekst źródłaWe are working on the history and meaning of the word myth, in its philosophical, aesthetic, political and anthropological meanings, with the question: is myth reducible to domination ? We attempt to carry out a re-evaluation of the term which leads us to discuss the postulates of the "science of myth", the postulates of Plato, but also of Marx. We analyze why and how the word myth became synonymous of domination (fascist, capitalist, patriarchal, etc.) during the 20th century. We then try to show that different conceptions of the word myth exist, and a poetic tradition which allows us to think of myth from the side of emancipation. Finally, we want to see the link between the myth and the dream, and how it can be thought of in connection with the question of emancipation

Pełny tekst źródłaThis work aims, through a study of the romantic cult of great men, to throw light upon the construction of an representation of power whose far reaching effects can be felt even in the works of Max Weber and in the political practice of De Gaulle. The romanticism of the leader commences when the romantic representation of genius as a radically superior being comes to be applied to the great figures of history. The central thesis of the romanticism of the leader lies in a handful of words : because genius is extraordinary, radically "other", its power is also extraordinary, totally estranged from everyday forms of politics. The picture of a magic contact between genius and the masses, suddenly sweeping away all the mediocrity the romantics associate with the quotidian, represents the dream of surpassing the political, of reducing its complexity to a simple surge of shared enthusiasm. By its force of fascination, the dream of the extraordinary survives its creators (Hegel, Carlyle, Michelet, Quinet, Chateaubriand, Stendhal, Hugo, to name but a few) and can take on different shapes. The first is the neoromanticism of the leader, enriched notably by ideas deriving from Nietzsche and the psychology of masses. The second is the sociology of the extraordinary, the concepts of effervescence and charisma (Durkheim and Weber), where the idea of an escape from the quotidian through enthusiasm, though profoundly transformed, is still present. The third is the politics of the extraordinary practiced by leaders who have, unwittingly and in vain, attempted to give reality to this dream

Pełny tekst źródłaThis dissertation aims to study how, in a context of economic and social crises, the breach of consensus on the national project expressed by the American dream has triggered some changes regarding the way national values have been expressed in institutional political discourse since the 1960s. The American dream can be defined as a national myth and a national ideology ; it offers a variety of meanings among which are the dream of upward mobility with its relation to the Protestant work ethic, and the dream of freedom and equal opportunities for a chosen people entrusted with a sacred mission to reform the world. Using as a body of research the Democratic and Republican nomination acceptance speeches since 1960, this study applies the methodology of discourse analysis, and especially Antonio Gramsci’s hegemony theory, to the analysis of the expression of the American dream. Indeed, according to Gramsci’s theory, the changes in the way the dream has been expressed may be deemed necessary to the survival of a dominant ideology : faced with a context of crisis, the American dream has thereby been able to maintain its hegemonic position and its role as a tool for legitimizing social order

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis aims to study the structure of film financing and distribution of Lebanese cinema, by identifying the main challenges of the sector, in order to propose strategies for sustainable development. Public aid from the ministry of Culture, support from the Lebanese Cinema Foundation, essentiality of foreign co-productions, cooperation between the Central Bank and commercial banks, reliability on private investors and liaisons between the cinema sector and television channels, have been analyzed in depth in this thesis. In addition, the impact of distribution and exhibition of Lebanese films, particularly the localization policy for multiplex and arthouse cinemas, the numerous film festivals, the rare cinematographic television broadcasting, and the impact of the Lebanese VOD platform have been explored. A qualitative and quantitative research methodology was carried out in order to study the market and propose concrete solutions aimed at strengthening the economy of Lebanese cinema

Pełny tekst źródłaOn the basis of hagiographical texts written in the 9th-11th centuries, the author studies the authority of visions and prophecies in Byzantium, from a diachronic and synchronic perspective. The increasing demand for a more visual and personalized religious message (growing prestige of icons, development of spiritual guidance in the secular world, preoccupation with the Other World) significantly decreased suspicion towards visions and it was employed by local power centres as an instrument of legitimacy or contestation. The investigation pays special attention to prophecies, which acquired a political function especially in relation to two crucial events of the political and religious history of the 9th century: the second iconoclast crisis and Basil I’s ascension. The study emphasises the importance of visions and prophecies for the comprehension of the complex relations between religion and politics and of religious rhetoric used by concurrent powers in the Byzantine Middle Ages

Pełny tekst źródłaIndividual and social behaviors, such as voting patterns, the ability to trust others, participation in the community, health-seeking behaviors, or attitudes towards contraception, can persist over many years. Relying on new historical and contemporary data sources, the works compiled in this thesis aim at explaining and quantifying rigorously instances of persistence in behaviors and preferences. This work presents three contributions to the literature. Firstly, it compiles a new micro-level geocoded historical datasource on missionary activity in sub-Saharan Africa. Secondly, it has elucidated, in original ways, channels of persistence in development, which are not attributable to formal institutions. Thirdly, it has analyzed the intensive margin of diversity, providing a new way to address the endogeneity issue in the study of the role of diversity on income. The first part of the thesis is a work on the long-lasting influence of missionary activity in sub-Saharan Africa. I present there the research I have conducted with Julia Cagé. It relies a new database that we constructed and geocoded based on the Geography and Atlas of Protestant missions. This research is developed in the two first chapters of the thesis. The second part of this thesis studies the social conditions under which ancestry differences act as a persistent barrier for individual earnings in the United States. The United States is a natural choice to study the persistent effect of ancestry on income, as this is a country that was populated by subsequent waves of migration from different origins during a relatively short period of time. Moreover, the American Census Bureau has recorded data about ancestries since the 1850s
