This case study is based in Mundo Verde, a Brazilian natural products company, and its focused on the strategic decisions the company has to make to overcome the current problems. The case is built around three major theoretical perspectives: Competitive advantages from a Resource Based View, Brand Identity and Entrepreneurship. In the case is presented first the company, disclosing the necessary information to analyze and comprehend Mundo Verde, by accurately identifying the company´s competitive advantages. Next the student is presented to a narrative where the CEO of the company meets one of the franchisees in an attempt to find out more about the company´s issues and to see how the stores are working. Several scenarios are presented to the students which represent several possibilities of action, considering the company, the problems to be addressed and the objectives of the company.

Executive summary: Social Media is increasingly becoming prevalent and firms are increasingly adopting social media. Managers are concerned about the value social media provides and how it can be used for competitive advantage. The resource-based-view of a firm suggests that resources that are rare, valuable, imperfectly imitable and non-substitutable can create sustained competitive advantage. This thesis uses the resource-based view of the firm applied to five case studies of Wiki implementation and analyzes how social media could create sustained competitive advantage. The analysis in this thesis finds that social media can be used to enhance existing resources and capabilities in a firm. These organizational capabilities are hard to imitate because of path dependency, social complexity and causal ambiguity and thus provide the firm sustained competitive advantage. The effective implementation of social media by a firm requires that it identify its core capabilities and resources to enhance, identify the gap that exists between the needed capabilities and the capabilities the firm possesses and then systematically embed social media in the daily routines and processes of the organization. This can be done by adopting appropriate social media guidelines, training and policy enforcement. Adopting social media by itself will not confer a firm sustained competitive advantage but capabilities thus enhanced could confer a firm sustained competitive advantage.

This paper approaches the strategy in business management and aimed at identifying and outlining the interests and commitment of stakeholders in strategic resources management concerning production and implementation of wind turbine equipment of a Brazilian wind power company and also verifying if internal and external results deriving from such activities were sustainable, taking as main reference seminal publications and periodicals relevant to the research point that discuss the Resource Theory, Stakeholders and Sustainability. An analysis was carried out to assess how stakeholders, beyond the temporal context, intermediated the composition, development and management of the organization´s resources, as well as the social, environmental and economic results obtained from resources management in the production and supply of wind turbines to a Wind Power Plant located in the State of Ceara, in order to portray that Brazil sustainability can be an important competitive advantage source that creates value for shareholders and the community (Hart & Milstein, 2003). The strategy herein applied was the qualitative investigation using a single study case, which allowed for the thorough examination of an active organization operating in the Brazilian industry of wind power and also the resources used in the production and implementation of wind turbines supplied to the a Wind Power Plant in Ceara. Considering the content analysis and the triangulation principle, three qualitative data collection methods were applied to identify and characterize stakeholders’ interest and commitment in resource management of the organization operating in the Brazilian wind power industry, as follows, semistructured deep interview with managers of tactic-strategic level and analysts of organization´s value chain nine activities, analysis of public internal and external documents; and analysis of audio-visual material. Nonetheless, to identify the internal and external economic, social and environmental results of implementation and supply of wind turbines to the Wind Power Plant in Ceara, semistructured interviews were also carried out with the residents of the region. Results showed the BNDES (Brazilian Development Bank) and the organization head office were the stakeholders who exerted the strongest influence on resources related to production and implementation of the aerogenerator product at Trairi Wind Plant in Ceara. Concerning the organization resources, at the current stage of the Brazilian Wind Industry ,although the brand, reliability and reputation of the organization under study were valuable esources, rare, hard to imitate and exploited by the organization, it was noticed that opposed to RBV, they did not actually represent a source of competitive advantage . For the local community the social, economic and environmental results related to the wind turbines implementation were more positive than negative, despite the fact that the productive process caused negative environmental impacts such as the high emission of CO2 to transport wind turbines components to Trairi Wind Power Plant.

Pełny tekst źródłaA field survey, administered to 2000 manufacturing and services businesses operating in Australia, is used to gather the data. Of the 2000 surveys sent, the hypotheses are empirically tested using multiple hierarchical regression analysis on a final sample of 291 firms. Control variables include firm age and Porter’s five forces of industry structure. Based on the results, verification of the RBV’s main prescription can not be supported unequivocally. Intellectual property assets, for example, do not have a statistically significant association with firm success, after accounting for the effects of tangible resources and the control variables. Organizational assets, however, not only explain additionally significant variation in firm success, after accounting for the effects of tangible resources and the control variables, but make among the greatest, unique contribution to firm success based on the size of the beta coefficients. Reputational assets offer additional explanatory power to predicting firm success after accounting for the effects of tangible assets and the control variables, but only with respect to one measure of firm success does its beta coefficient make a larger, unique contribution than financial assets. Lastly, contrary to theory, capabilities are not the single most important determinant of firm success, after accounting for the effects of intangible assets, and tangible and intangible assets, in two separate hierarchical regression equations. This finding is surprising and explanations are provided. Overall, the study raises some questions with respect to just which resources are the most important determinants of a firm’s market and financial success and offers a fruitful avenue for further research.

In recent years, there are more and more human resource management studies which used the resource-based view(RBV)to discuss the relations between human resource management capabilities and business performance(e.g., Batt, 2002; Chan, Shaffer, and Snape, 2004; Guest, Michie, Conway, and Shehan, 2003; Huselid, 1995; Wright, McCormick, Sherman and McMahan, 1999). Although RBV is the mainstream in strategy management field, the author thinks that more discussions can be made about how to apply RBV for the HRM researches. Many RBV related researches only examines the impact of HRM practices on the overall performance. But Ray, Barney and Muhanna(2004)argued, the firm performance is influenced by many business different processes. Each different process could have positive or negative impact on overall firm performance. Therefore, only focusing on the impact of HRM towards company performance can not bring the meaningful conclusion. The author takes Ray et al.(2004)’s viewpoint into account, and then use questionnaires received from 50 listing electronic companies in Taiwan Stock Market as the samples of this thesis to analyse the relationship among human resource management capabilities, human resource management effectiveness, company competency, and firm performance. There are three important findings, the first one is that human resource management capabilities can enhance human resource management effectiveness. Secondly, the author figure out that human resource management effectiveness is not a bridge between human resource management capabilities and firm performance. Finally, firm competency and human resource management capabilities have significant influence on company performance. The author hope that the accomplishment of the research can help us to understand the entity of human resource management capabilities.

ERP upgrade has been discussed as a critical issue needs to be addressed in the IT field. The latest news said that “ERP upgrade” is the strategic positioning tool which is necessary to bridge the gap between where the company was now and where it wanted to be in a few years (Franke, J. 2007). Although upgrading ERP has been proved no doubt of its importance towards any sized, goal or employees of an organizations over time, it is also found that the activity of upgrading existing ERP system was hardly successfully carried out by most of the organizations. All upgrades involve steep fixed expenses. The completion of an ERP upgrade can be extremely complex and time consuming. Whether or not to upgrade the system? The reasons are left in an unclear question. However, under the situation, only few theoretically researches and resources articles were found on the upgrading decision issue. Few research studies were found, with no convincing approval of the upgrade decision understanding. Some argue that the reason can be the costs of the underlying upgrade system; others may found that the in-house resources utilization is the centre of the upgrade problem. In this study, we will then focus on the resource competitive contribution as factors influencing the ERP upgrade decision. The ERP’s strategic importance was built on its functions and utilizations within an organization. Considered this, main question of our research will therefore be focus on the reason of differing in the upgrade decision of organizations by using a strategic perspective resource-based view. This paper therefore examines the strategic factors influence the ERP upgrade decisions. Survey and interviews were used to gather data for a case study. The result shows that reduce cost, and increase revenue are the factors that influence an organization’s ERP upgrade decision.

When presented with financial shortages and operation of a horizontal organization to achieve the goal of efficient and high-quality information development, how to more effectively manage resources becomes a crucial topic. This study analyzed eight cases to investigate how administrators managed different resources to enhance the quality of projects when developing information technology (IT).The results showed that the case companies applied different resource management systems when addressing different environments. IT companies, with abundant human resources and first-rate technology, are able to continuously improve the capabilities of their technology as well as to dominate this crucial resource constantly. By contrast, information sectors, which require the use of the technology resource, employ technology to resolve resource deficiency, such as inadequate actor resources and inefficient structures. This study applied the data analysis of grounded theory to investigate how the case companies managed their resources. The results yielded an academic and practical contribution. Regarding the academic contribution, we applied the viewpoint of resource management and grounded theory to systematically describe and analyze resource management in IT projects, including the use of the following four resources: technology, actor, task, and structure. Regarding the practical contribution, when developing information systems, enterprises should examine their internal resources on the basis of the research code determined by this study to identify the presence of the aforementioned four resources in their projects, and then analyze the correlations between different categories. Finally, enterprises could further their understanding of how to effectively manage their resources on the basis of the findings of this study.

The purpose of this study is to explore the marketing capabilities on firm performance and marketing performance impact. Many established marketing research, citing resource-based view (RBV) to explore the relationship between marketing capabilities and firm performance, the results were found that marketing capabilities will help enhance the firm performance , and marketing capabilities for enterprises to create a unique resources and capabilities, and thus to achieve a competitive advantage(e.g., Moore and Fairhust,2003; Tsai and Shih, 2004; Vorhies and Morgan, 2005; Verhoef and Leeflang,2009). But Ray, Barney and Muhanna (2004) argue previous RBV research has shown a common absence , that is , key resources of the functional level directly to link with firm performance, they believe firm performance is composed of many different business processes of composition, the impact of different business processes on firm performance may increase firm performance, but may also reduce the firm performance, so if only verify the relationship between a single business process and firm performance , it may produce incorrect results. Therefore , the author takes Ray et al.(2004)’s viewpoint into account, on the marketing capabilities, marketing performance and firm performance as a research framework, and advocating firm marketing capabilities enhance marketing performance, but not necessarily be able to improve the firm performance. Use questionnaires received from 45 Gas Equipment Industry Association of manufacturers and related companies in charge of marketing in Taiwan as the samples of this thesis to analyses the relationship among marketing capabilities, marketing performance and firm performance. Research found that marketing capabilities will enhance marketing performance and overall marketing performance, but individual marketing capabilities only product development could enhance the firm performance, the others individual marketing capabilities couldn’t enhance the firm performance. The author hope that the accomplishment of the research can provide a new insight to the association of marketing capabilities and firm performance

Since the 1990s, due to the rapid development of information technology, and the fast-changing environment, it becomes harder and harder for the companies to get hold of the situations of external environment. They have to constantly innovate in many areas, so to take care of many unpredictable crises, and keep themselves surviving and growing in a fiercely competitive environment. While competing, companies cannot be in control of the changing external environment, but they can be sure of the internal resources and capabilities. So instead of focusing on external factors, it would be more appropriate for the companies to integrate internal resources and capabilities, and then set up a correct course. Only this kind of strategy-making is possible to be carried out within the capabilities of a company. This is what becomes to be known as the Resource-Based View (RBV). The innovations realized, based on the integration of internal capabilities and resources currently available, according to the ecological trends nowadays, are called Green innovation. Lately, thanks to the concerning international ecological regulations, as well as environmental requirements for the products from customers, the environmental consciousness has become an international issue impossible to be ignored. Many researches by investigators both local and international emphasize the importance of Green innovation, making the products from those green industries more valuable. Among the six newest developing industries in Taiwan, the solar industry stands out for the Government’s attention, and prospers accordingly. But the technology industries are fast-changing and facing international competition. In order to innovate, companies cannot follow a linear thinking, but they have to try to form a circle, completing a thorough cycle from production to sales, utilization, scrapping, recycling, degradation and reproduction, so to lower their cost, building products with ecological value, while co-exist with the Earth at the same time. Thriving and efficient innovations will be created this way. Therefore, a study on this industry will be most representative to understand the enterprise competitiveness in the green innovation. This research is using cases of companies as examples, and analyze the factors of Green innovations, using Resource-Based View (RBV) and Quality Function Deployment (QFD) This approach allows the introduction of customers’ demands (RBV) to the technological factors (Green innovations). So we can discover Green innovation factors within the limited resources of a company, and create effective Green innovations. The research has found out that through the RBV, the Green innovations factors discovered can be applied for Green innovations more suitably and closely to the actual operations of the company in question. They can be used for reference when the company studied conducts its own Green innovations.

Family business is a typical organizational form around the world and dominates the economic landscape of many nations. Scholars propose that the reason why family businesses are different from non-family business because of resources that are distinctive to a firm as a result of the interactions between family, family members and business. The bundle of resources that have been theoretically developed within the resource-based view framework are identified as “Familiness” of the firm. Familiness is considered as a source of competitive advantage to family firms, but some scholars believe that the resources are necessary but not sufficient to achieve a competitive advantage. Resources must also be managed and deployed effectively through capabilities. Marketing capabilities is one of the most important capabilities of a firm, there are many studies have pointed out that the marketing capabilities and business performance are significantly related. The purpose of this paper is to exam the relationships among the familiness of individual family firm and their marketing capabilities through the resource-based view framework. This paper conducted a convenience sampling questionnaire survey to collect data, using the members of "Taiwan Fastener Association", "Taiwan Watch & Clock Industrial Association”, “Taiwan Fluid Power Association", and the companies that National Sun Yat-sen University MBA’s students work for as sample, issued 571 questionnaires, 134 valid questionnaires were retuned, the effective response rate is 23.5%. Descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, multivariate analysis and multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis and hypothesis testing. The results of this paper show that all of family human resource, family social resource and patiant financial resource have significantly positive correlation with marketing capabilities. The managers of family business can take advantage of such unique resources to strengthen marketing capabilities that create sustainable competitive advantage and achieve superior performance.

SaaS is a lease over the Internet. SaaS provides companies for business “on-demand” model and helps them use external IT sources to optimize the information system efficiency. However, the company has some problems with outsourcing vendors, such as limits on the contract, poor coordination and communication. Therefore, these problems make it difficult to maintain their relationship and cause to end the relationship or change other vendors. This study uses the Resource-Based view to explore how the company avoids risk and creates opportunities with SaaS service. Besides, how the company strengthens organizational capabilities (Technological Opportunism and Technological Sophistication) maintains the commitment of long-term cooperative relationship. We collect 175 questionnaires about using the SmartPLS software to analyze data. Our findings show as follows:(1)The organizational capabilities (Technological Opportunism and Technological Sophistication) have positive effect on the SaaS vendors commitment. Facing today’s highly competitive market and changed business environment, whether the company has the capability to implement successful inter-organizational information systems to achieve efficient supply chain management becomes a significant issue. To fulfill this need, this research aims to develop a framework for measuring the IOS capability. After company interviews, our proposed framework is simplified to measure four IOS capabilities: (1) physical assets, (2) path dependency, (3) relational intangibles (trust and complementary resources), and (4) market power. We propose that firms with these IOS resources can have higher IOS usage, which in turn creates greater IOS performance.

Recently, most of manufacturing firms in Taiwan choose OEM or ODM business model because of their excellent operating capability. However, with the profit of Contract Manufacturing mode being diluted slightly, many firms start to consider whether they should choose branding strategy or not. Therefore, the strategy of business model has become a very important issue nowadays. This study attempts to fill the gap in the literature by providing an integrative research framework through extensive literature review to identify the key determinants to examine the difference between various types of business model. Based on core competence perspective, this study constructs a topologic model with two major core competence: Technology capability and Market capability, and bring out four varieties of business model: contract manufacturing, product design, value integration, and brand focusing. thus, the 2X2 matrix and construct were developed and then examined through four case studies. By literature review of business model, this study develops five important determinants including Value Positioning, Resource Competence, Relationship Capital, Corporation Implementation and Strategic decision. Complying with the view of resource dependence and several literatures about core competence, the construct built up completely. Hence, we could use the construct to measure four different strategic decision . This study suggests that firms should measure their core competence carefully, and choose the moderate business mode for their own. Then, adjust their content of business model by learning from best practice of four successful cases in order to stand out in the world stage.

With communication technology innovation, deregulation, and other extraneous factors which might affect corporate development, the media corporates have found their way to expand into larger firms or even conglomerates. Nowadays, it’s not likely for a corporate to stick to only one market or industry; instead, the innovative media technology facilitates media corporates to develop new businesses and to further improve their corporate revenue. Instable environment of media industries in Taiwan as it is, the resource flexibility possessed by media corporates becomes more important than ever to achieve the competitive advantages. Therefore, the Resource-Based View (RBV) of the strategic management is applied for the present study to analyze the media corporates in Taiwan. The Hong Kong-based media corporate—Nextmedia Limited— has been chosen as a case for the study due to its outstanding performance on different businesses in Taiwan and the in-depth interviews and document analysis is utilized as the methods for data collection. The present study found that the Nextmedia is a low-diversified media corporate using only internal development to extend its businesses. Applying resource-based view, related diversification uses more intangible resources such as human resources; conversely unrelated diversification emphasizes on physical resources such as land and capital. Meanwhile, the content as resource is conditionally shared among unrelated business units instead of related ones. Financial motive is mainly the reason why the Nextmedia make their related diversification; and corporate growth is accociated with unrelated diversification. Finally, the present study found that the leader of the corporate is a dominate factor for resource allocation and all diversification strategies.
Hussin, Noor Zatul Iffah. "Resource based view on tourism development in Malaysia (1965-2010)". Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1959.13/1048513.
Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis seeks to examine the structural factors that influence the development of tourism at the national level, with a focus on Malaysia. Tourism in Malaysia emerged later than in its neighbouring countries such as Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia. This is because the primary source of foreign-exchange earnings before 1985 came from commodities and the manufacturing industry. Only after a severe economic recession did Malaysia consider the tourism industry as an alternative to broaden the country’s economic base. Ever since, with an efficient marketing and planning strategy, Malaysia has become the most visited country in Southeast Asia after Thailand. In gross national product (GNP), tourism ranked second after manufacturing, contributing approximately 34 per cent of the total GNP of Malaysia in 2005. To understand the factors that influence tourism development in Malaysia, this study has chosen a qualitative method because it involves answering questions pertaining to ‘what’, ‘why’ and ‘how’, which can provide a wealth of profound and detailed information on the issues being investigated. As the qualitative method is the root for the interpretive paradigm, this study has chosen bibliographic research as its research method, as the information gathered for this study is from published material and data were analysed using content analysis/NVivo 8.0. The findings from this study indicate that Malaysia’s planning in the tourism industry appears to exhibit characteristics consistent with the stages of Butler’s Tourism Life-cycle Model in that Malaysia has undergone the stages of exploration, involvement and development. This study discovered that Malaysia’s strength has been in its four marketing areas (product, price, promotions and distribution channel). However, the last marketing areas, planning and implementation, were not receiving full cooperation from some of the stakeholders, rendering the long-term marketing objectives unachievable. This indicated that competitive advantages may arise, but if resources are imitable, competitive advantage is not sustainable. The marketing strategies that have been employed by Tourism Malaysia for short-term and long-term objectives indicate that Malaysia has constantly considered its core resources (e.g. nature and culture), created resources and supported resources (e.g. accessibility, quality of service and market ties) and capabilities that are capable of attracting visitors in a consistent manner (see Table 3.7). This study contributes to the theory of tourism in Malays and provides practical perspectives. From the theory perspective, this study validates the importance of integrating a resource-based view (RBV) and Butler‘s development theory in underpinning the country’s degree of competitive ability in tourism. These theories can be used as a guideline for other countries in their tourism planning, assisting them to use their resources efficiently. This study also reveals that Malaysia possesses individual capabilities that result in short-term advantages in tourism. From the practical perspective, the Malaysian government needs to improve its marketing resources by developing a close relationship with its stakeholders, as this relationship is presently marked by a lack of cooperation.

In recent years, Taiwan’s agriculture has faced difficult situations. But as the trend of travel is raising, leisure farming is also gaining ground and gives a great opportunity for traditional farming industry. However, due to the lack of knowledge and experiences of managing leisure farms, many owners who were originally farmers have found difficulty when it comes to create distinguish features. Moreover, imitating each other also leads to collectively poor performance. Therefore, this study has two goals. On one hand, it sums up the past researches and literatures to find out the key factors resulting in success in managing leisure farms; on the other hand, it offers best practice from the case study of well-run existing leisure farms. The conclusions of this study can be presented as followings: 1. The operating activities of a leisure farm should be in accord with its own resources and tourists’ demand. It has to create a unique theme to distinguish itself from others. 2. Once a leisure farm has positioned itself, its products and services should fit its position to avoid giving tourists conflicting messages. 3. Internet may be helpful to the marketing of leisure farms, but tourists can easily gain information as well. Therefore, without non-stop innovation, a leisure farm cannot sustain its distinctive position.

Taiwan Government performed the Two Trillion in 2002, Twin Stars Industries, LCD-TV panel industry which is counted among the star industries in the future. Furthermore, supplier chain management is capital in this industry;Meanwhile, the first step that is select adaptive supplier. If we can select the most adaptive supplier for us, we could have more competitive advantage in this industry. In our thesis, we propose a supplier selection model to evaluate business resources effects on LCD-TV panel supplier selection. Firstly, we use Resource-Based View to examine business resources and figure out what supplier criteria can achieve multiply effect. Furthermore, these criteria are used to build supplier selection hierarchical framework based on the literatures, experts information and fuzzy delphi method. The most adaptive supplier is determined with fuzzy preference relations which is used to establish the weight of criteria and suppliers performance since its attractive properties. With our proposed model, the business can not only examine their position, but also evaluate their supplier performance, to develop individual supplier strategy.
