Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to challenge the existing paradigm of resistance to organizational change by offering a novel, interdisciplinary perspective. More specifically, this paper seeks to detach from traditional formulations of resistance to change and introduce a new paradigm, reevaluating resistance through the Good Lives Model (GLM) and the concept of Primary Human Goods (PHG). Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper uses contemporary literature on resistance to organizational change to make the case that the existing paradigm is one of negativity and deficiency. The authors define resistance, as currently formulated, subsequently offering a new perspective through the GLM. The etiological underpinnings of the model are provided and the concept of PHG is defined to illustrate relevance in reevaluating resistance to change. Findings The paper illustrates that resistance behaviors are not individual problems of employees, which must be overcome for successful change. Rather, resistance behaviors are the manifestation of disruptions to the achievement of PHG. Moreover, the paper demonstrates the pursuit of PHG is an innately positive, human activity that change strategies should take into account. The Dialogic Organization Development approach is also integrated as a means to uncover priority goods and disruptions that may impact them. Originality/value The paper provides a novel reevaluation of resistance to change through the interdisciplinary application of the GLM and PHG. Further, the paper uses the model to integrate several fundamental theories of human motivation into one cohesive, consistent framework.

Streszczenie:
This paper-based thesis consists of five interlinked chapters/articles that explore dimensions of both the style of governance and the state-building endeavour in the West Bank in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, primarily between 2007 and 2013. This governance and state-building project came to be known as the Fayyadist paradigm, or Fayyadism, in reference to the former Palestinian Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, Salam Fayyad. The thesis examines the transformations that occurred under Fayyadism in the two spheres of security and economy, and elucidates their consequences on the people’s security and well-being, as well as the broader dynamics of resistance against the Israeli military occupation and settlercolonialism. Therefore, the primary contribution of this thesis is empirical and ethnographic in nature. This thesis examines the transformations in the security sphere at three levels. First, to historicise Fayyadism, the thesis contextually analyses the evolution of Palestinian security forces and reforms over the past two decades. Second, the thesis unpacks and critically assesses perceptions about the Fayyadist paradigm by drawing on the findings of an ethnographic fieldwork investigation conducted at two sites in the occupied West Bank, namely Balata and Jenin refugee camps, as well as the associated relevant literatures. Third, this thesis investigates in-depth the security campaigns to induce “law and order” as a defining feature of the Fayyadist paradigm, and through a bottom-up ethnographic approach, analyses the consequences of Fayyadist security campaigns on the people’s security in Balata and Jenin refugee camps and on the broader dynamics of resistance against Israel. This thesis examines and analyses the transformations in the economic sphere at two levels. It addresses the interaction between Fayyadism and the aid industry through an aid-dependency lens to examine whether the transformations that occurred under the Fayyadist paradigm impacted donors’ operations and the overall framework of the aid industry. It also utilises theories of contentious politics to analyse the implications of the Fayyadist paradigm’s neoliberal economic model and the authoritarian transformations it induced, and also to expand the conceptual underpinnings of the contentious politics theories through proposing the notions of contentious economics and resistance economy.

Streszczenie:

Various models of density dependence predicted different evolutionary outcomes for Helicoverpa zea, Diabrotica virgifera, and Ostrinia nubilalis using simple and complex resistance evolution models, different dose assumptions and refuge proportions. Increasing available refuge increased durabilities of pyramided Plant-Incorporated-Protectants (PIPs), especially between 1–5%. For some models of density dependence and pests, additional refuge resulted in faster adaptation rates. Significant considerations should be given to a pest's intra-specific competition in simple and complex theoretical models when designing insect resistance management plans.

Life-history, refuge, and dose characteristics of a PIP had different effects on the adaptation rate of a generic pest of Bt, and unexpected outcomes occurred. Intrinsic growth rate 'R0' was the strongest evolutionary force, and large R0's reduced time to resistance for a high dose PIP to similar levels as projected for a low dose PIP. This was caused by differential density dependent effects in refuge and Bt fields that elevated generational resistance increases beyond those from selection alone. Interactions between density dependence and R0 were always present and further affected the life-time of the PIPs. Varying 'average dispersal distance' did not affect evolutionary outcomes; however, increasing the proportion of the population engaging in dispersal often increased the durability of high dose PIPs. When resistance genes spread from a hypothetical hotspot, local resistance phenomena developed in the immediate surroundings. Higher growth rates lead resistance to spread faster through the landscape than lower rates. Increasing available refuges slowed adaptation rates to single PIPs and low dose pyramids, although non-linear trends were possible.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices at the onset of PIP commercialization slowed pest adaptation rates. For corn rootworm, interspersing non-selective periods with IPM+IRM delayed resistance evolution, yet crop rotation was the best strategy to delay resistance. For bollworm inclusion of isoline corn as an IPM tool did not increase the life-time of the PIP. A local resistance phenomenon for rootworm was maintained immediately surrounding the hotspot; random selection of mitigatory strategies in the landscape slowed adaptation rates while mitigation in the hotspot alone did not. Mitigation extended the life-time of the pyramid minimally for both corn rootworm and bollworm.

This thesis describes and analyses the politics of the Australian DIY anarcha-punk scene and the ethos of the culture's participants. Eschewing the orthodox sub-cultural approach which situates 'punk' within a structuralist hegemony / resistance paradigm, the thesis uses participant observation and textual analysis techniques to understand the role played by zines (hand made publications) in fostering the intellectual and ethical capacities needed to participate in the Australian DIY anarcha-punk scene. The zines, in their deviation from classical anarchism, often invoke concepts of power and 'the political' analogous with those of poststructuralist theory, yet DIY anarchist politics also diverge from poststructuralism. I therefore address DIY anarchist politics by questioning the significance of these inconsistencies with Theory. In doing so I am led to suggest that the zines may be more usefully approached as elements in the ethico-political practice of DIY anarchism, which nonetheless draws on the 'conceptual vocabulary' of much poststructuralism, as well as other theoretical approaches. Thus I re-describe DIY anarchism as an ethos which seeks to argue for its agendas and values on non-foundational terms. Further, I demonstrate that by pursuing an ethos of 'autonomy', the culture's participants seek to develop their intellectual and ethical capacities through a self-consciously 'developmental' engagement of power relationships, in the form of DIY 'prefiguration' or exemplification. Following the preoccupation with gender politics in the zines and the wider scenes, I describe the approach to gender politics in similarly ethico-political terms, drawing likewise on various elements of poststructuralist and other theories. I show this feminist ethical practice to be based on assumptions about gender which embody a certain poststructuralist approach to 'gender', one that is predicated on the material effects of a discursively congealed gender structure, but forms part of an ethos aiming to deconstruct this structure. By re-describing the political approaches of these zines in reference to various theoretical perspectives and ethico-political practices, I am able to offer perspectives to the culture in question, as well as to the interdisciplinary academic context within which I am writing.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the reproduction of gender norms and the resistance against them in the Swedish reality TV show Paradise Hotel, using Raewyn Connell's theories Hegemonic Masculinity and Gender Hierarchy together with the method multimodal critical discourse analysis. Previous research has shown a reproduction of traditional gender norms in Reality-TV, along with the presence of a power imbalance between the contestants and the production itself, where the production holds the power. Despite discourses of feminist character taking a greater place in western society after the #MeToo movement, Paradise Hotel is yet today a subject of discussion in Swedish media, accused of presenting a sexist discourse. Discourses of hegemonic gender norms and resistance against them has been the subject of study in eight episodes from season 11 of Paradise Hotel. Through the usage of a theoretical framework focusing on gender, culture making and representation, the results show that typical gender norms can be spotted through the contestants' practices of stereotypical traits connected to the traditional ideas of masculinity and femininity. The study also shows resistance against these norms, primarily by the female contestants and through their practice of typical masculine traits. The maintenance of the stereotypical gender norms is dominant by the production amplifying the contestant’s actions of resistance as comedy through special effects, reducing women to sexual objects intended for male pleasure and reinforcing the image of the man as the omnipotent gender role.

Skeletal muscle hypertrophy is one of the main outcomes of resistance training (RT), but how hypertrophy is modulated and the mechanisms regulating it are not fully understood. To investigate how muscle hypertrophy is modulated during RT and the mechanisms that underpin it, we measured in 10 young men (27[1] years, 24[1] kg·m-2) at the beginning (T1), at the third week (T2), and tenth week (T3) of RT: 1) vastus lateralis cross-sectional area (CSA) and the echo intensity by ultrasound; 2) day-to-day (24h and 48h) integrated myofibrillar protein synthesis (MPS), after maximal resistance exercise (RE) using deuterium-oxide ingestion and muscle biopsies; 3) RE-induced muscle damage by analyzing Z-line streaming and indirect markers; 4) type I and II fiber CSA (fCSA), modulations in satellite cells pool and in myonuclear number and domain by immunohistological analyses; 5) global gene expression by microarray. Main results show that there was significant (P<0.04) muscle hypertrophy (increase in muscle CSA and type II fCSA) only in T3 (increases in muscle CSA in T2 were considered edema through echo intensity analyses). Changes in MPS post-RE at T1, T2 and T3 were greater at T1 (P<0.03) than at T2 and T3 (similar values between T2 and T3). Muscle damage was the highest during post-RE recovery at T1, attenuated at T2 and further attenuated at T3. Changes in MPS post-RE at both T2 and T3, but not at T1, were strongly correlated (r~0.9, P<0.04) with muscle hypertrophy (T3-T1). Satellite cells pool markedly increased 48h post-RE only in T1, and remained chronically elevated (P<0.05). There was no significant change in myonuclear number or domain during RT. The microarray analysis indicated improved metabolic efficiency, improved stress response and attenuated muscle damage, and strengthening of muscle structures involving myofibrillar proteins and extracellular matrix. Initial MPS response post-RE in a RT program is not directed to support muscle hypertrophy, coinciding with the highest magnitude of muscle damage. However, integrated MyoPS is quickly \'refined\', and with the progressive attenuation on muscle damage by 3wk of RT (T2), MPS is related to muscle hypertrophy (also at T3). We conclude that muscle hypertrophy is the result of accumulated intermittent changes in MPS post-RE in RT, which coincides with progressive muscle damage attenuation. The absence of change in myonuclei number indicates that preexisting myonuclei were able to expand post-RE MPS to promote muscle hypertrophy. Initial expansion in satellite cells pool, chronically maintained, favors a regeneration purpose of satellite cells in response to muscle damage and an anticipatory \"readiness\" state rather than a direct role in muscle hypertrophy, at least for the first 10 weeks of RT in young men

Streszczenie:
The authors investigated the viability of UHMWPE composites for use in orthopaedic bearing applications as an alternative to crosslinking. Two composite systems were used, both based on a UHMWPE matrix: PtZr quasicrystals and Zr particle fillers. Through wear testing and impact toughness measurement it was shown that these two fillers produced composites that had high wear resistance and more impact toughness than the crosslinked polymer. These results suggest that further investigation into the use of composites for implant bearing surfaces is warranted and that appropriate criteria for filler materials must be developed to spur development of longer-lasting devices.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The work describes two representative case-studies: a centrifugal compressor impeller made by Alloy N0726 through Hot Isostatic Pressing and a Centrifugal pump impeller made by Alloy 718 through Laser powder-bed Additive manufacturing. Two basic powder metallurgy approaches were developed at Baker Hughes to manufacture Centrifugal-Compressor impellers: near and net shape. Applicability and benefits of both routes are discussed. Powder metallurgy Alloy N07626 was selected for its outstanding corrosion properties, superior to Alloy 718, as an alternative to conventional Alloy 718 forgings. For the 3D pump impeller, the material Alloy 718 was selected to produce spare impellers that mimics or exceeds the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of conventional equivalent alloyed steels produced by castings. The pump Impellers were redesigned for printing to keep the flow-path and even increasing the stage performance. Additional post-processing steps of surface finishing and heat-treatment were applied to achieve microstructure and mechanical properties which complied with API, ASTM and customer standards. A mild Net Shape approach was released, referred as "Close Net Shape" (CNS). It is discussed how the CNS solution was down-selected as the optimum compromise in term of overall process cost and intrinsic variability. The alloy N07626 material properties are outlined with an emphasis on new collected experimental data regarding corrosion behavior and resistance to liquid droplet erosion. The results of manufacturing the 3D-printed pump impeller are discussed and compared to conventional manufacturing routes. One of the main challenges of the Oil & Gas Energy industry is facing more and more harsh environment that requires increasing use of corrosion and heat resistant alloys, similar or even better than well-known Inconel 718. These materials are still relatively difficult to machine with slow and expensive manufacturing routes. Conventional machining methods faces intrinsic technological limitation to obtain complex shapes that prevent the adoption of novel design. Furthermore, lead time of forgings can be long when a customized production route is preferred instead of standardized series. The development and spreading of revolutionary manufacturing methods based on additive manufacturing and powder metallurgy is changing this picture. In particular, additive manufacturing, more suite for relatively small parts and complex components, presents itself as complementary to more mature powder metallurgy technologies like pressure-assisted sintering by Hot Isostatic Pressing. These novel technologies bring two key benefits: 1) a more effective and versatile manufacturing routes and 2) a faster and more responsive supply-chain with shorter time-to-market. The advantages apply in new units with novel and more efficient design as well as in Service operations when shorter time-to-market is more critical.

Streszczenie:
GaN on Diamond has been demonstrated to enable notable increases in RF power density without impacting High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT) peak junction temperature. However, Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (MMICs) fabricated using GaN on Diamond substrates are subject to the same packaging thermal limitations as their GaN on SiC counterparts. Therefore, efforts to exploit GaN on Diamond to achieve substantial increases in MMIC power are stymied by external packaging thermal resistances that characterize the current “remote cooling” paradigm. This paper explores an intra-chip cooling alternative to the “remote cooling” paradigm, eliminating various heat spreader, heat sink and thermal interface layers in favor of integral microfluidic cooling in close proximity to the device junction. We describe an intra-chip cooling structure comprised of GaN on Diamond with integral micro-channels fed using a Si fluid distribution manifold. This structure exploits GaN on Diamond substrate technology to support increased HEMT areal power density while employing diamond microfluidics to affect scalable, low thermal resistance die-level heat removal. Thermal-electrical-mechanical co-design of integrated circuit (IC) features is performed to optimize conjugate heat transfer performance and manage the electrical and mechanical impacts associated with the presence of fluidic cooling near the electrically active region of the device. Through this, MMICs with significantly greater RF output than typical of the current state-of-the-art (SoA), dissipating die and HEMT heat fluxes in excess of 1 kW/cm2 and 30 kW/cm2, respectively, can be operated with junction temperatures that support reliable operation. The modeling, simulation and micro-fabrication results presented here demonstrate the potential of diamond microfluidics-based intra-chip cooling as a means to alleviate thermal impediments to exploitation of the full electromagnetic potential of GaN.

Streszczenie:
Applying feedback control strategies to biological materials establishes a new paradigm for creating controlled biomolecular systems. Specifically, current tracking and feedback voltage amplification are demonstrated separately on bilayer lipid membranes (BLMs) formed via the droplet-interface bilayer (DIB) method. Ion channel induced degradation of the bilayer is studied in order to provide a convenient method for causing changes to the bilayer which can be monitored using proportional-integral (PI) feedback voltage control. Alpha-hemolysin (αHL) from Staphylococcus aureus was shown to cause large scale reductions (+90%) to the resistance of the lipid bilayers formed at the interface of connected water droplets within 90 minutes of bilayer formation. Feedback integral current control was demonstrated on pure 1,2-diphytanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPhPC) DIBs not containing αHL and provided accurate current tracking of a 100pA desired current signal driven at a rate of 10mHz and less. Voltage amplification monitoring was achieved on DPhPC DIBs containing αHL, providing a way to detect decreasing resistance and capacitance of the bilayer and nonlinear current-voltage relationship.
