Streszczenie:
The present study examines the role of resilience as a mediator between the relationship of academic self-concept with self-adjustment among students with disabilities during the covid 19 pandemic. The results of this correlational study (N = 92 students with disabilities) showed that students with disabilities who possess a more positive academic self-concept tended to be more resilient than their peers with a lower positive academic self-concept. Highly resilient students, in turn, tended to be better self-adjusted than their lesser resilient counterparts. Mediation analysis suggested that resilience partially mediated the relationship between academic self-concept with self-adjustment.

In this multilevel investigation, resilience in adaptive functioning among maltreated and nonmaltreated low-income children (N = 677) was examined in relation to the regulation of two stress-responsive adrenal steroid hormones, cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), as well as the personality constructs of ego resiliency and ego control. Maltreatment status was not related to differences in average levels of morning or afternoon cortisol or DHEA. However, lower morning cortisol was related to higher resilient functioning, but only in nonmaltreated children. In contrast, among physically abused children, high morning cortisol was related to higher resilient functioning. Morning and afternoon DHEA was negatively related to resilient functioning. Although diurnal change in cortisol was not related to resilience, for DHEA, maltreated children with high resilience showed an atypical rise in DHEA from morning to afternoon. Morning and afternoon cortisol/DHEA ratios were positively related to resilient functioning, but did not interact with maltreatment status. Ego resiliency and ego control strongly differentiated maltreated and nonmaltreated children, and the personality variables were substantially predictive of resilience. When considered together, demonstrated effects of personality, cortisol, and DHEA maintained independent contributions in predicting resilience among high-risk youth.

In this paper, we explore the modelling of resiliency among educational leaders which promote to resilient schools. The pandemic has a firmer grip on everybody and batters each of people more physically, mentally, and emotionally. Disruptions and change in daily activities caused by the pandemic have led to uncontrolled feelings of stress. Stress is, however, normal in daily life. It could stimulate creativity, promote diligent and increase performance. As a result, in most studies, the key to coping strategy is positive thinking which inhibit self-development. It is between being good stress and being positive thinking. They could have the best of intentions of spending their time on issues that matter most. The high performing head teachers have sustainable work done and they find ways to develop the resilience to focus their work from distractions. Resiliency is an absolute must keep people engaged, passionate, and committed to achieve challenging situations. This study lighted up effective ways on courage to support others. This study explored resilient factors and challenges of seven of high performing head teachers and two expertise from a few states in Malaysia. Based on the data collected through semi-structured interviews the study seeks to identify the positive relationship between resilience and positive school outcomes. The findings would provide useful ideas for head teachers in primary schools and future researchers. The concept associated to the leaders’ need to help resilient leaders thrive as individuals and as leaders in educational leaders’ resiliency.

Background: The word “resilience” has been trending since recent devastating natural disasters and the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic. This study sought to uncover how Japanese pharmacists perceive and define resiliency and quantify their resilient behaviours for the purpose of enhancing pharmacy education. Methods: A four-part, online questionnaire that included the 10 Factor Resilient Behavior Scale (F10RBS) was sent to pharmacists around Japan. Results: Pharmacists defined resilience as “bouncing back” and “a positive adaptation after trauma”. An exploratory factor analysis of the resilience-enhancing behaviours led to three factors: personal health and well-being, altruism, and a positive outlook. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that resilience is strengthened through experience and previously established behaviours and skills. This understanding of resilient behaviours can be integrated into pharmacy education by encouraging university students to maintain a healthy lifestyle and make choices that will nurture resilience before experiencing a traumatic event or the stress of professional work.

ObjectivesChildren exposed to social adversity—hardship as a result of social circumstances such as poverty or intergenerational trauma—are at increased risk of poor outcomes across the life course. Understanding what promotes resilient outcomes is essential for the development of evidence informed intervention strategies. We conducted a systematic review to identify how child resilience is measured and what factors are associated with resilient outcomes.DesignSystematic search conducted in CINAHL, MEDLINE and PsychInfo from January 2004 to October 2018 using the keywords ‘resilien* and child* in the title or abstract. Eligible studies: (1) described children aged 5–12 years; (2) identified exposure to social adversity; (3) identified resilience; and (4) investigated factors associated with resilience.Outcome measures(1) approaches to identifying resilience and (2) factors associated with resilient outcomes.ResultsFrom 1979 studies retrieved, 30 studies met the inclusion criteria. Most studies were moderate to high quality, with low cultural competency. Social adversity exposures included poverty, parent loss, maltreatment and war. Only two studies used a measure of child resilience; neither was psychometrically validated. Remaining studies classified children as resilient if they showed positive outcomes (eg, mental health or academic achievement) despite adversity. A range of child, family, school and community factors were associated with resilient outcomes, with individual factors most commonly investigated. The best available evidence was for cognitive skills, emotion regulation, relationships with caregivers and academic engagement.ConclusionsWhile there is huge variation in the type and severity of adversity that children experience, there is some evidence that specific individual, relational and school factors are associated with resilient outcomes across a range of contexts. Such factors provide an important starting point for effective public health interventions to promote resilience and to prevent or ameliorate the immediate and long-term impacts of social adversity on children.

Energy demands is one of the most important challenges for the future of urban communities and its built environment. Hence, the resilience of energy in urban communities is one of the effective concepts used to face the energy crisis fact due to the intensive consumption of energy. In this context, the paper is concerned with reviewing the previous literature for urban energy. resilience principles and energy-built environment frameworks by specialized international organizations and also studying the experiences of two top ranked international resilient cities. This paper proposes an energy resilient built environment conceptual framework in order to better recognize and examine the complicated problems of resilient and energy efficient urban communities. An analytical approach was applied for the current situation of New Borg El Arab City in Alexandria, Egypt using the proposed framework for measuring the resiliency level in the built environment, then applying an AHP method for determining the priorities of its built environment components, which need to be developed in order to achieve a resilient city. Thus, the overall goal is to provide a model to city planners and decision-makers that could enable them to plan for adaptable urban communities to be more resilient towards energy vulnerability.

This research is a small part of a bigger field of research made before by other authorsregarding the humans in the urban public space. It has a small context compared to otherstudies, but a big impact inside the community. It aims at finding answers to questions thatother researchers asked before, but under different circumstances and they displayed them through different ways such as documentary films (The social life of small urban spaces 1980, How to live in a city 1964).After experiencing the city life of Malmö and some questions have been raised, the concept of resilience intersected with the interest of social public life in a neighbourhood. In order to have the theoretical framework to answer the research question, the thesis follows a literature review, where the concepts of resilience, urban resilience, resilient urban design and social resilience have been explored.Next, after exploring the city of Malmö, some case studies have been chosen and studiedthrough direct observation in different months starting with March and various times of theday. In the methodological approach section the methods are explained as well as a detailed presentation of the biggest tool used for this research: observational drawing. The tools used for the observation are field notes, observational drawings and photographs. The cases are spread throughout the city and are located in neighbourhoods with different urban tissues. The results reveal all the observational drawings made during the field visits and the field notes written. They show how people use the spaces in all three case studies depending on the weather or other external factors. The discussion reveals the complexity of the relation between concepts and the empiricaldata, following the initial aim of the research throughout the discussion. This thesiscontributes with important outcomes to the field of urban studies creating awareness about the urban context and its influence on people. The findings of this study show a diversity and creativity of users in using the public space.

Resilient and exposure-resilient functions are functions whose output appears random even if some portion of their input is either revealed or fixed. We explore an alternative way of characterizing these objects that ties them explicitly to the theory of randomness extractors and simplifies current proofs of basic results. We also describe the inclusions and separations governing the various classes of resilient and exposure-resilient functions. Using this knowledge, we explore the possibility of improving existing constructions of these functions and prove that one specific method of doing so is impossible.

This thesis studies the theories, scientific evidence and spatial relationships within urban form to determine means and deviations that developments can use to determine the resiliency of urban form within a given location. Resiliency within urban form functions as modulations around a morphological mean. Rather than replicate the mean, resilient cities modulate with low standard deviations around the mean. As a result, while many look aesthetically different, resilient cities are structurally more similar than dissimilar. Cities can use this information to inform their projects on a schematic design level to determine if they are improving their urban form or if they are deviating from the resilient mean.

Teacher Resilience in Central Virginia: How Veteran Teachers become Resilient Lee Brantley Shields ABSTRACT The development of teacher resilience is important in improving teacher retention. This study identified reasons veteran teachers have remained in the classroom; individual and contextual factors of resilience; significant challenges the teachers have encountered; and strategies the teachers used for dealing with the challenging situations. This was a qualitative study that included interviews with 15 teachers in a rural school division in Central Virginia. Data analysis occurred through deductive coding of the transcribed interviews using qualitative data analysis software. The findings for this study identified seven factors that veteran teachers indicated were important in their decision to remain in the classroom. The study also identified 22 individual factors of resilience and 10 contextual factors presented through the experiences of the veteran teachers. The veteran teachers described four challenges that they have faced in their school division and the strategies they used to overcome those challenges. The study concludes with the discussion, implication, and conclusion of the findings.

Streszczenie:
There have been decades of attempts to evolve or revolutionise the traditional financial system, but not all such efforts have been transformative or even successful. From Chaum's proposals in the 1980s for private payment systems to micropayments, previous attempts failed to take off for a variety of reasons, including non-existing markets, or issues pertaining to usability, scalability and performance, resilience against failure, and complexity of protocols. Towards creating more resilient payment systems, we investigated issues related to security engineering in general, and payment systems in particular. We identified that network coverage, central points of failure, and attacks may cripple system performance. The premise of our research is that offline capabilities are required to produce resilience in critical systems. We focus on issues related to network problems and attacks, system resilience, and scalability by introducing the ability to process payments offline without relying on the availability of network coverage; a lack of network coverage renders some payment services unusable for their customers. Decentralising payment verification, and outsourcing some operations to users, alleviates the burden of contacting centralised systems to process every transaction. Our secondary goal is to minimise the cost of providing payment systems, so providers can cut transaction fees. Moreover, by decentralising payment verification that can be performed offline, we increase system resilience, and seamlessly maintain offline operations until a system is back online. We also use tamper-resistant hardware to tackle usability issues, by minimising cognitive overhead and helping users to correctly handle critical data, minimising the risks of data theft and tampering. We apply our research towards extending financial inclusion efforts, since the issues discussed above must be solved to extend mobile payments to the poorest demographics. More research is needed to integrate online payments, offline payments, and delay-tolerant networking. This research extends and enhances not only payment systems, but other electronically-enabled services from pay-as-you-go solar panels to agricultural subsidies and payments from aid donors. We hope that this thesis is helpful for researchers, protocol designers, and policy makers interested in creating resilient payment systems by assisting them in financial inclusion efforts.

Mace, William. "Resilient civic republicanism". Thesis, University of Surrey, 2018. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/849631/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Advanced liberal democracies today can be conceptualised ontologically as complex dynamic systems, characterised by increasing interconnectedness and interdependence. Neoliberal globalisation has been a key driving force behind this systemic evolution. This thesis claims that emerging global trends, such as climate change, illustrate the flaws in the dominant political philosophy of procedural liberalism. Freedom, understood as non-interference within this model, has permitted social fragmentation, atomisation and degradation of socio-political institutions. As a result, the latter are argued to rely on top-down impositions of the common good to facilitate adaption to new socio-political challenges, which undermine democracy. This calls for a need to find a political philosophy that can foster adaption to new circumstances, whilst maximising the democratic empowerment of individuals in the Western world. This thesis constructs a unique civic republican model based upon a revision of the scholarship of Michael Sandel, termed resilient civic republicanism (RCR). It contends that this is an appropriate political philosophy for the 21st century, in virtue of its capacity to underpin a resilient democratic socio-political institutional model in the face of contemporary challenges. This is due to being based on an alternative conception of liberty, freedom as self-government, which reinforces principles such as public deliberation, civic virtue, civic spaces, and federalism. These are subsequently argued to foster the self-reflection and adaption that resilience demands. By facilitating the acknowledgement of mutual self-realisation and collective responsibility, in that today one’s self-realisation is dependent on others, RCR can reconcile the imposition of new obligations (deemed necessary to attend to systemic challenges) with individual empowerment. Hence the claim that RCR would not result in socio-political institutions being corrupted by contemporary developments. The thesis therefore maintains that RCR can preserve liberty, and accommodate new constraints being imposed by emergent social and political changes within a democratic institutional model, in contradistinction to procedural liberalism.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Despite periodical refurbishments, hospital buildings appear to become less resilient over the long term. This thesis considers the underlying reasons for this loss of resilience and examines the implications for the wider hospital system. Decisions made during a project can radically alter its course, resulting in highly successful outcomes or alternatively, in projects facing budget overruns, delays, partially or wholly unfulfilled objectives, disappointed end-users, and inadequate buildings. Refurbishment change is examined through the lens of resilience at three levels of magnification; initially, the focus is on refurbishment projects in hospitals; this is followed by an examination of the wider refurbished hospital building; and finally, consideration is directed towards the NHS Estate. Project changes may be particularly challenging when they relate to measures aimed at adapting buildings to future climate change. Specifically, there may be little enthusiasm for expenditure devoted to future needs, when funding is insufficient to meet today’s urgent priorities. Where Trusts have large portfolios of property, pre-emptive climate adaptation measures will take considerable time to realise, and accordingly, necessary measures must be in place before any climate-related risk to vulnerable patients becomes life-threatening. Hospitals are extremely intricate buildings, both in terms of function and of the services that underpin the care process. Relatively small changes, either temporary or permanent, made during the course of a project can have significant repercussions for the hospital. A systems approach has been adopted to explore the relationships and connectivities that may be affected by the hospital refurbishment process. The research findings include the identification of change and resilience mechanisms in refurbishment projects. A framework for mapping change trajectories is presented, to assist in the analysis of propagating changes that affect refurbishment processes. The thesis also makes recommendations for what should be considered in hospital refurbishment projects to improve their overall resilience and reduce vulnerability to major impacts, particularly those that may arise as the UK climate changes.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The concept of cyber-manufacturing systems (CMS) is at the nexus of manufacturing advances by an interdisciplinary effort from engineering, computer science, and information science fields. Future manufacturing will increasingly be characterized by complex, networked cyber-physical systems that may be instantiated in one physical location but distributed across many. However, this vision of an interconnected manufacturing environment ushers in the challenge of new security threats to production systems that still contain traditional closed legacy components. How to address the system failures caused by cyber-attacks remains one of the main success factors in the widespread adoption of CMS. The aim of this research is to investigate the resilience of such a system in the face of cyber-attacks. In general, “resilience” refers to the ability of an entity to withstand unforeseen environmental perturbations or disturbances while continuing performing its intended functions successfully. A resilient CMS is a manufacturing system capable of detecting, withstanding, and recovering from failures while still fulfilling its expected levels of service with acceptable levels of security, integrity, and profitability. Particularly, the resilience from failures caused by cyber-attacks is the focus of the research. A resiliency measure, evaluation of system impacts, and selection algorithm of resilient mechanisms have been explored.

Streszczenie:
A resilient system is a system that possesses the ability to survive and recover from the likelihood damage of disruptive events or mishaps. The concept that incorporates resiliency into engineering practices is known as engineering resilience. To date, engineering resilience is still predominantly application-oriented. Despite an increased popularity of engineering resilience usage, the diversity of its application in various engineering sectors complicates the universal agreements on its quantification and measurement techniques. There is a pressing need to develop a universal framework, which standardize the modeling, assessment, and improvement of engineering resilience for a broader engineering discipline. This paper provides a literature survey of engineering resilience from the design perspective with the focuses on engineering resilience metrics and their design implications. The currently available engineering resilience quantification metrics are reviewed and summarized, the design implications towards the development of resilient engineering systems are discussed, and further the challenges of incorporating resilience into engineering design processes are evaluated. The presented study expects to serve as the building blocks towards developing a generally applicable engineering resilience quantification metrics that can be used for system design.

Design of engineering resilient systems is an emerging research field. The contribution of this paper is to i) define engineering resilience on the basis of various resilience concepts in different fields; ii) propose the engineering recoverability as a new component in the framework of designing engineering resilient systems; and iii) introduce a general mathematical formulation to quantify the engineering resilience. One case study of a CNC machining system is used to demonstrate the value of designing engineering resilient systems.

Streszczenie:
Resilience in architectural research, discourse, and practice tends to focus on physical aspects of the built environment. Much of the discussion within this technological domain of resilience resolves around singular, unique, and high value facilities: ignoring the vast fabric of buildings where most people live. However, studies in socioecological resilience suggests that resilience in the built environment must address people and systems, not merely property. Transitioning to this focus will both require and result in broadening architecture’s interest and influence beyond the normal physical boundaries of the built environment. To effectively engage this broader scope, new tools must enable new modes of public outreach, information sharing, data analysis, decision support, and ultimately create new knowledge. This paper describes the motivation, development, and preliminary findings of one such tool, the Resilient Home Online Design Aide (RHOnDA). This results suggest a cycle of participatory architectural research to advance socioecological resilience.

Streszczenie:
Traditional engineering design practice seeks to create reliable systems that maintain a desired minimum performance when subjected to a defined set of impulses. To manage impulses, designers implement techniques to specify systems that are resilient or robust to impulses. Resilient systems perform with degraded capacity when subjected to impulses while robust systems remain unaffected by impulses. In this paper we examine antifragility, a complement to resilience and robustness, to manage the impulse response of complex cyber systems. Where fragile systems fracture when subjected to impulses, antifragile systems become stronger. We discuss why this strengthening characteristic makes antifragility attractive for managing impulse response in complex cyber systems and develop a measure for antifragility that differentiates it from fragility, resiliency and robustness. We then discuss an antifragile cyber system to demonstrate the benefits of antifragility in an impulse-rich environment.

Streszczenie:
Healthcare environments are known to be intense in knowledge and constant stress. Exchanging information through social interactions in the work environment was addressed in this study of an emergency department in order to answer the following research question: “Regarding knowledge management, what are the relationships between resilient performance and burnout?”. To do so, we used the resilience social network questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Results showed that resilience is positively correlated to burnout. Nurses are the most resilient actors. In addition, professional experience and participating in huddles relate to a greater contribution to the organisation's resilience performance. Therefore, the constant use of resilient capacity takes a toll on health care professionals. Knowledge sharing also promotes informal leadership, providing more skilled professionals and highly qualified human capital.
