This doctoral dissertation examines the career of managers in an international context. Specifically, this research focuses on careers patterns in a changing environment using the case of international managers (i.e. managers with a career that develops globally). More broadly, the research looks at the evolving nature of managerial careers, the organizational and global environments in which careers develop, and the reciprocal relationship between changing careers and changing environments, specifically in the context of those with global careers. All these aspects are explored in this doctoral dissertation with three research articles that use three different sets of empirical data. The first article analyzes the career profiles of top European managers in the context of increased internationalization. Data on profiles and careers of more than 900 top managers in four countries has been collected and analyzed. The purpose is to verify the hypothesis of stability in national career models and identify new elements related to internationalization. The second article focuses on the profiles of top managers at the biggest Swisscompanies. We focused on the evolution of profiles and careers of about 600 topmanagers over a 30-years period (1980–2010). This article highlights the development of an international community of foreign top managers in Switzerland and analyzes the changes in their profiles and careers. The third article focuses on the cross-cultural adjustment of a population of 152foreign employees (traditionally-assigned expatriates, self-initiated expatriates, skilled migrants) and 126 spouses. This article studies different aspects of adjustment, focusing on local language proficiency and relocation support practices

Streszczenie:

The popularity of the concept of patient-career rose at the same time as more people were using chiropractic care in the United States. Yet, patient-career has yet to be applied in a sociological manner to those who seek out chiropractic care. Semi-structured in-depth interviews with 19 patients of chiropractic care reveal that pain, to the point of interference with daily-life, is what drove them to seek out help outside traditional medicine. This research investigates how holding preconceived notions of chiropractic care (positive or negative), the influence of social networks, and beliefs surrounding health and pain influence the direction of the individual careers in chiropractic care. Several key findings emerged throughout the interview process such as understanding the impact of pain on daily-life, the validation of this pain from a caregiver, the importance of connections and shared understandings in healthcare, and the paradox of a chiropractic adjustment as a blend of science, religion, and magic.

Streszczenie:
Reforms to the national research and research training system by the Commonwealth Government of Australia sought to effectively connect research conducted in universities to Australia's national innovation system. Research training has a key role in ensuring an adequate supply of highly skilled people for the national innovation system. During their studies, research students produce and disseminate a massive amount of new knowledge. Prior to this study, there was no research that examined the contribution of research training to Australia's national innovation system despite the existence of policy initiatives aiming to enhance this contribution. Given Australia's below average (but improving) innovation performance compared to other OECD countries, the inclusion of Finland and the United States provided further insights into the key research question. This study examined three obvious ways that research training contributes to the national innovation systems in the three countries: the international mobility and migration of research students and graduates, knowledge production and distribution by research students, and the impact of research training as advanced human capital formation on economic growth. Findings have informed the concept of a research training culture of innovation that aims to enhance the contribution of research training to Australia's national innovation system. Key features include internationally competitive research and research training environments; research training programs that equip students with economically-relevant knowledge and the capabilities required by employers operating in knowledge-based economies; attractive research careers in different sectors; a national commitment to R&D as indicated by high levels of gross and business R&D expenditure; high private and social rates of return from research training; and the horizontal coordination of key organisations that create policy for, and/or invest in research training.

Fotiadou, Maria. "The discourse of careers services : a corpus-based critical discourse analysis of UK university websites". Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2017. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/10127/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the discourse of careers services in UK university websites. The notion of employability has been presented and promoted by powerful groups, such as governments, organisations, the media, employers, and higher education institutions, as the remedy to the social problem of unemployment. Careers services in UK universities were given the role of ‘expert’ professionals who are there to support and guide students towards developing their employability and skills. This study examined the ideas and messages reproduced and promoted by the careers services, which could affect the students’ understanding of the ‘job market’ and their role in it. The chosen methodology, that is corpus-based critical discourse analysis, combined qualitative and quantitative methods and tools for the analysis of 2.6 million words deriving from 58 UK universities’ websites, and more specifically the careers services sections. In general, this thesis highlights some of the problematic, common-sense ideas that are being promoted by these services and encourages the denaturalisation of the careers services’ discourse. The main argument is that the language used by the careers services in UK universities reproduces and promotes neoliberal ideology. The analysis shows that higher education students are encouraged to develop ‘job-hunting techniques’ and are presented as responsible for their own ‘survival’ in a ‘fiercely competitive job market’. The notion of employability is promoted as the main solution to this highly problematic ‘reality’. The services advertise that they ‘know’ what employers are looking for from prospective employees and claim that they can ‘help’ students with their job search. The close analysis of linguistic data reveals that these services act as the ‘enablers’ of the students’ self-beneficiary action. In addition, besides their role as careers counsellors, the services’ use of language demonstrates their involvement in the therapeutic field. Finally, the language used by post-1992 and Russell Group universities was found to be quite similar. There are, however, some differences that could be viewed as signs of competition between these two university ‘groups’ and a preference of the job market towards a particular ‘group’ of graduates from elite institutions.

Streszczenie:
This study was initiated by the need to develop change agent skills in a group of consultants from a large government organisation facing major challenge from a competitive market. In order to develop a program, a group of mature and experienced change agents, with around 20 years experience in a variety of different organisations in each case, was asked, through the medium of an unstructured interview, to tell the story of their own growth and development. A model of 12 factors was developed, based on recent studies of leadership, the researcher's own career experience and an analysis of a well known practitioner's biography. This model was used to analyse the content of the interview material. The study found that there were a small number of factors which distinguished the development of this group from that of leaders who had been the subject of earlier studies. These were, firstly, the primary influence of the mother as role model. for both men and women. Secondly, the influence of early confrontations with established systems of power being employed in abusive ways, which developed a commitment to preserve the freedom of individuals to participate in decisions which affect their lives. Finally, a belief in the critical part ethics, integrity and the continual practice of learning for self-awareness, plays in maintaining a sustainable career as a change agent. The conclusions for a program of development for change agents are, firstly, that prospective participants should self assess their personal experiences from childhood, their attitudes to learning and the maintenance of an integrated self as an essential for mediating between stakeholder groups. Secondly, the influence of practical experience far outweighs that of schooling or academic studies. Thirdly, change agents employ what Bateson describes as type III learning, more than any particular theoretical approach, when designing organisational interventions. The study concludes that further research into the nature of the attachment bonds formed by change agents in childhood is needed to better understand the psychological dynamics which support excellent and sustainable practice.

Obers, Nöelle Marie Thérèse. "A case study of the research careers of women academics: constraints and enablements". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1001575.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this research is to investigate constraints that women academics experience in their research careers and how enablements, particularly in the form of mentoring relationships and support structures, can impact on their research career development in the context of the new knowledge economy of Higher Education. The research was a case study of one South African Institution and used a mixed method approach. Social realism underpinned the research. Data was collected and analysed within the spheres of structure, culture and agency, using critical discourse analysis, interpretation and abstraction strategies. I investigated how women researchers understand and experience career success and what they perceive and experience as enablements and constraints to their research careers. Institutional support structures and cultures were examined with a focus on the role of the Head of Department. I explored mentoring and questioned whether the agency of women academics is empowered by mentoring and supportive structures to overcome constraints to their research productivity and the development of their careers. Gender-based issues of inequity, low self-esteem and accrual of social capital appear to be the underlying factors affecting how women perform in the research arena and advance within the institution. It was found that mentoring is a generative mechanism that has a favourable impact on women academics as it enables them to overcome obstacles to research productivity and career advancement.

Objective: This dissertation draws upon field research conducted with Brazilian and German members of parliament. It aims to compare communication strategies and electoral behavior in both countries. The working hypothesis is that the communication strategies of members of parliament vary with the voting pattern, the type of vote and the electoral connections. Methodology: semi-open and closed interviews were conducted to assess the perceptions and practices of parliamentarians of both countries as an initial exercise in exploring the relationship between media visibility and parliamentary careers. The research design draws upon a saturation sample to provide a sufficient number of respondents for analysis. Statistical correlations (cross-tabulation, logit and FA) between the responses to the survey and the independent variables concentration and type of votes, magnitude and competitiveness were established. Results: The research compares a developed country (Germany) with a very good infrastructure, and a developing country (Brazil) with a great deficit in infrastructure. Yet, the study found similar stablished politicians, who uses national and regional media to communicate with voters, works in committees, deliver speeches at the House’s floor, whose activities are not primarily related to district interests. The research also found a type of politician who heavily uses the local broadcasting and print media, whose activities are primarily focused on delivering services and pork to constituencies. As for the online politics, the research found that the Internet is not seen as a "game-changer": it is used in both countries as a complementary alternative to the mass media, and as a strategy adopted mostly by MPs who belong to small parties with few resources. Big-party MPs uses the Internet mostly to gain some independence from the party bureaucracy. In Brazil, the Internet is not seen as a valuable means of communication with voters, but with other political elites. As an instrument of political communication, the research found that the Internet is used by Brazilian and German politicians in different ways and for different purposes. It emerged not as a globalizing force, i.e., with a technological power to produce a pasteurized and ineluctable usage all across the globe. Instead, the Internet is used in local contexts to suit local interests. Conclusion: The field research partially confirmed the hypotheses that suggest an association between the variables concentration of votes, district magnitude and level of competitiveness with different levels of concern on positive coverage in the mass media, and on the construction of a good political reputation. In Germany, the mixed electoral system generates incentives for candidates to adopt different campaign strategies, depending on the type of vote (majority or proportional). These incentives shape the structure of competition at the district level, and the MPs’ communication strategies. The multifaceted aspects of the electoral connection proved to compensate for the absence of adequate coverage in the mass media, and may even crown with success the election of candidates for proportional seats in Brazil and Germany.

Streszczenie:
Organizations that deliver programs to promote the entry of students from marginalized populations into the U.S. health workforce often struggle to demonstrate the effective achievement of outcomes, and face diminishing fiscal resources. This study was an empirical examination of the extent and manner that a statewide, precollege, health careers exploration program fostered the matriculation of underrepresented minority students into health degree education programs. Schneider and Stevenson's aligned ambitions framework provided the theoretical foundation. The research questions for this study examined the relationship between program participation and the successful health degree matriculation of racial minority students based on the extent of participation, the type of participation, and the extent and type of participation controlling for gender, profession, and region using a quantitative trend analysis of archived program data and longitudinal, preexisting matriculation data. Completion of the analysis used sequential logistic regression. The selection criteria for study included high school students who participated in the program between 2006 to 2010 and who subsequently enrolled in college (N = 246). No statistically significant relationships between program participation and matriculation into health care education programs were found resulting in the recommendation to reassess and revise data collection and analysis processes for future official program evaluation. The resulting white paper recommends that Area Health Education Consortium (AHEC) career exploration program designers create continuous and effective review and evaluation processes to ultimately enable the positive social impact of a more representative number of students from marginalized populations into the U.S. health workforce.

Streszczenie:
There has been insufficient academic research on the music of the Eastern Cape in general and Port Elizabeth and New Brighton in particular. This study, as part of the International Library of African Music (ILAM)lRed Location Museum Music History Project (ILAMIRLMHP) - an oral history intervention to save the music history of New Brighton from extinction through research and documentation of the memories of veteran musicians - is focused on jazz vocalists. The primary objective of my study is to investigate, critically analyze, interpret and document the career experiences of six New Brighton jazz vocalists in the context of performing in the Port Elizabeth music industry during the apartheid and the post-apartheid eras. The secondary objectives are to stimulate research interests in music students and ethnomusicologists to pursue research on the music of Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape and to inspire and motivate the vocalists to continue making music with renewed zeal. A qualitative research paradigm informed the field research necessary for this study. The fieldwork paved the way for an eclectic framework of analysis grounded in Pierre Bourdieu's notions of habitus, field and capital, examining the impact of the context on the vocalists' habitus which influenced how they viewed and interpreted their past and current experiences in the performance field. Data obtained through extensive interviewing of New Brighton's contemporary female vocalists and their male counterparts revealed that they have no opportunity to make commercial recordings. The musicians have to migrate to Johannesburg to have successful music careers, although personality politics, greed and lack of professionalism also work against the musicians' success. The data shows that New Brighton musicians, both male and female, do not have enough performance opportunities and there are fewer chances to tour now than there were from the 1960s through the 1980s. As in the apartheid era, female vocalists are still discriminated against in terms of pay, and men discriminate in how they pay other male musicians. Analysis of the vocalists' jazz compositions revealed that their song lyrics depict a bona fide urban African culture and reflect the emotional needs of the society in which they live.

Streszczenie:
One challenge facing graduate education is the preparation of future faculty members across disciplines to assume faculty positions (Wulff & Austin, 2004). This qualitative study explored the socialization process of doctoral students in education and engineering fields committed to a career as a faculty member. Specifically, this study attempted to understand what knowledge, skills, and understandings (Weidman, Twale, & Stein, 2001; Van Maanen & Shein, 1979) are acquired during the research collaborations some doctoral students have with their faculty mentors and how this relationship prepared doctoral students for a future as a faculty member. Core elements of the Graduate and Professional Student Socialization model (acquisition of knowledge and skills, investment, and involvement) were used to explore doctoral student socialization (Weidman et al.). Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with forty doctoral students (20 education, 20 engineering) from four predominately White research institutions (PWRIs). Five themes emerged from the data regarding the role research collaboration played in socializing doctoral students in education and engineering to faculty careers. First, the research collaborative process with mentors aided doctoral students in learning how to communicate research to different audiences, the realities of research, how to conduct problem solving research, and the competitive nature of research. Second, participants identified learning about the complexity of a faculty role, particularly responsibilities that extend beyond teaching and research for faculty members. Third, doctoral students reported learning about the requirements of the tenure process. There were ways the collaborative experience positively or negatively contributed to an interest in a faculty role. Positive factors included enjoyment of research and the perceived autonomy and flexibility of research. Negative factors included the perceived low priority given to teaching and the demands placed on faculty members. Participants reported varying levels of commitment to the research collaborative relationship depending on whether they had competing interests. Exposure to the research collaborative process with a faculty mentor allowed doctoral students to conceptualize the entire research process from beginning to dissemination and to get an intimate idea of the realities of faculty life. Implications for practice, research, and theory are outlined.

Streszczenie:
Objectives: This study aims to gain an understanding of how current trainee counselling psychologists perceive the scientist-practitioner model. Design: This is a qualitative piece of research grounded in a social constructionist perspective. Two focus groups were conducted lasting 60 minutes at two UK universities. An online survey was also conducted to capture additional views. Method: 29 trainees participated in the study. 15 trainees on counselling psychology doctorate programmes took part in face-to-face focus groups whilst 14 trainees from doctorate programmes or the independent route responded to an online survey. The data collected were analysed using Braun and Clarke (2006) thematic analysis. Findings: Five main themes were identified in relation to the scientist-practitioner model: The Nature of Counselling Psychology, The Nature of Being a Counselling Psychologist, The Nature of Science, What Counts as Evidence, and What Happens in the Therapy Room. Conclusions: Much of the ambiguity and tensions in the literature were present in the views of participants. Three views emerged: the model as a spectrum, the model as two complementary roles, and the model as a toolbox. These views are explored and then implications for practice and possible directions for future research are outlined.

Streszczenie:
Research-based curriculum is a system of instruction which uses an authentic learning, problem-solving, cooperative learning, hands-on, and inquiry-discovery approach, guided by a constructivist philosophy. Its usefulness has been recognized for many decades but "research in the classroom" has not been adopted as a teaching method by many. This study centers on research done by students in science classrooms. The primary purpose of this study was to measure, both quantitatively and qualitatively; (1) students' understanding, by gender, of the nature of science and, (2) student attitude changes, by gender, toward the nature of science, scientists, and careers in science before and after the completion of research projects. The gender equity problem in science classes is explored and improvements in four process skills were measured for both treatment and control groups. Also, different models of research-based science education are described. The Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA) and the Nature of Science Scale (NOSS) were given pre and post to both groups. Several qualitative instruments were given and student journals were analyzed by gender. The results of TOSRA showed gains in positive attitude for students after they experience a research-based curriculum for six of the seven TOSRA scales. However, the control group had similar gains so the mixed design analysis of variance showed no statistically significant differences between control vs. treatment or male vs. female interactions. Much of the qualitative analysis revealed that students' understanding of the nature of science changes considerably after they "do" scientific research. The journal analysis and the "Research is...." question analysis show that students also have a significant affective response to the research experience. Quantitatively, the total NOSS score improvement for the treatment group was substantial (11.4 to 13.8) and better than the control, although it was not a statistically significant difference. Generally, treatment students showed greater improvement on all NOSS scales. Treatment students also had greater gains on the four different process skills measured in this study. Research-based curriculum is an effective way to change students' attitudes towards science and a sound way to increase student understanding about the nature of the research process.

Nowadays, organisations need tools in order to promote commitment and involvement of people within the work context, since the so called "job for life" and organisational loyalty can no longer be seen as part of the organization - employee link. Thus, it is necessary to strengthen this psychological bond that characterizes the individual's link to the organization through commitment. Within this context, the concepts organizational commitment and career commitment become relevant. Despite numerous existing studies that address both concepts, it would seem that literature rarely considers the professional category of scientists. For this reason, this study aims to analyze the career and organizational commitment of scientists in a scientific research. In terms of methodology, a quantitative approach was adopted by the application of a questionnaire to scientists in a national research center of reference. From the results obtained, it was concluded that career satisfaction has a positive influence on career commitment, which is negatively influenced by intentions to leave the profession. Regarding the perception of existence of career alternatives, it was found that these negatively influence career commitment. Additionally, statistically significant differences were not observed for the type of contract nor for age, thus demonstrating that these do not have any influence on organisational commitment.

Streszczenie:
This study considered migrants’ career outcomes as the result of their adjustments in terms of culture and career adaptation along with other positive attributes they brought on their arrival as well as developing in their new country. It considered that career is the property of individuals and managing it successfully is the responsibility of individuals themselves. Prior research into migrants’ issues and careers was used as the basis of this study and a model for analysis was developed using such issues. The resultant model included the wider life of migrants. A questionnaire including reliable measures of key variables was developed based on the literature. Two hundred and twenty-one Sri Lankan migrants completed the pilot tested survey. The results were analysed using factor analysis, tests of association and multiple regression analysis at the first stage to formulate a less complex model. Structural equation modelling was then used to confirm the relationships assumed between different variables. Although some of the relationships and/or variables assumed initially were removed from the model, the final model explained strong links between the variables that remained. Qualification gained before migration and career self-efficacy were found to be the most significant variables in explaining job satisfaction before migration. Usefulness of prior knowledge, skills and habits, efforts made towards career, education in New Zealand, information seeking, length of time in New Zealand and overseas experience had the greatest influence on current job level. Current job level, length of time in New Zealand and overseas experience were found to be the most significant variables explaining subjective career success after migration. Adapting to New Zealand culture was found to be significant in explaining only the career satisfaction after migration. It was also found that migrants’ career outcomes (success and satisfaction) after migration were significant variables in explaining overall career satisfaction of this migrant group: however, with the exception of job satisfaction, career outcomes before migration did not play a significant role in determining overall career satisfaction. The implications of the present study were considered, from both migrants’ perspective and that of New Zealand as the host society. A number of possible practical strategies relevant to migrants, community organisations and policy makers and authorities were suggested. Several potential avenues for future researches were identified and discussed. Thus, it is expected that this study will contribute to better career outcomes of migrants in New Zealand.

Jayalath, Dilini. "Reverse journey in dementia : a clinician's research journey leading to the development of carers' diaries". Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/17475.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Dementia is a progressively debilitating disorder often of insidious onset. When making the initial assessment or reviewing ongoing care of patients living at home, healthcare professionals rely on verbal information provided by person with dementia and their informal carers. Diaries have been used in very few instances to assist with gathering information about persons with dementia in the community. The review of literature found that there are very few studies that used carers' diaries in the context of dementia care and its effects on carers and patients, and there was no previous study that had used carer diaries in the assessment of dementia patients' problems in everyday life. It was also noted that no previous study has assessed the validity of these retrospective self-reporting by patients with dementia and their carers. If these self-reports are indeed unreliable and provide averaged impressions rather than actual fluctuations of frequency and magnitude of symptoms, then caregivers' diaries of these symptoms/problems can provide important and valuable additional information to clinicians. The main aim of this study was to capture a variety of problems (cognitive, emotional, behavioural, etc.) in people with dementia, using diaries kept by carers for a week and comparing with carers' oral recollection of problems in the same week. The second aim was to examine the potential therapeutic impact that keeping a diary had on carers' quality of life as rated by the EuroQol, emotional wellbeing as rated by the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale, as well as its impact on behavioural and psychological problems of dementia patients measured by the Neuro-Psychiatry Inventory. Method Carers were randomly allocated into two groups, the intervention and control groups. In the intervention group, carers received a diary and instructions on how to complete it for 7 days. A number of assessment tools and ratings scales were completed on Day 1 and Day 8. The control group carried out the same tasks except completing a diary. The scales used were questionnaires such as the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale and the Neuro-Psychiatry Inventory for carers to evaluate the problems in the person they cared for. The EuroQol and Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale were completed by carers to assess their own quality of life and screen for anxiety and depression in carers. The carers in the diary group were asked to complete a semi-structured questionnaire on their views about keeping a diary on Day 8 when they returned the diary to the researchers. On Day 28, carers in each group completed the Neuropsychiatry Inventory, EuroQol, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and a semi-structured questionnaire asking about their experiences taking part in the study. Results There was a 1 year period of recruitment from 1 May 2014 to 30 April 2015. A total of 97 couples were identified and approached to take part in the study, with 84 couples agreeing and giving written informed consent to take part. Out of these, 78 couples went on to complete the study and 6 couples withdrew. The problems reported in narratives and diary entries were content analysed by two raters independently and classed into 5 categories: cognitive, behavioural, emotional, psychiatric and other. In retrospective narrative accounts, significantly more cognitive problems were reported than any of the other four problems. In contrast, in diaries both cognitive and behavioural problems were reported significantly more often than the other problems. In addition, in the diary condition, the mean number of problems identified in the carers' diaries was significantly higher than in the carers' narrative accounts on Day 1 and Day 8. Furthermore, the number of problems recorded in diaries did not correlate with retrospective problems reported on Day 1 but correlated with the number of narrative problems on Day 8. In terms of therapeutic benefits of diary keeping, there were no significant differences between diary and control groups' mean scores in the Neuro Psychiatry Inventory, EuroQol and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale on Day 8. The mean Neuro-Psychiatry Inventory and Carer Distress scores were significantly lower at the end of the study for both the diary and control groups. Discussion The findings revealed that the carers' diaries identified a greater frequency of problems compared to retrospective information gathered from carers, with cognitive and behaviour problems being the two most common problems. Despite identifying more problems, the use of the carers' diaries in dementia did not appear to make a difference in carers in terms of carer distress, carers' health related quality of life or psychiatric morbidity amongst carers. This may be on account of the short period of one week that the diaries were used in this study. The positive correlation of problems identified in the narratives in diary group at Day 8 with diary entries in contrast to narratives at Day 1 where there were no correlation with diary entries suggest diary entries can enhance recollection of problems in narratives of carers who keep diaries. Conclusions Carers' diaries may be a useful tool in assessments of dementia patients as this study indicates that they may provide more information than obtained from a retrospective account of problems in persons with dementia. More research using diaries in dementia covering longer period than a week may be required to ascertain other benefits such as improving carers' well-being and problems in persons with dementia.

The purpose of this case study is to examine how talent management is applied in a university environment and how development in leadership skills for the participants of a project affects their willingness to stay at the university. This study also highlights the purpose of using a strategy like talent management to keep key people in the organization to stay and also that theories about talent management needs to be complete with theories about loyalty and commitment. This is done through examining the project Real-- Research and Leadership that the University of Umeå provided for 21 researchers and the first round of the project took part between 2015 and 2016. The purpose of this project is to work as a supporting instance for the researcher’s research career in an long term goal to get the young prominent researchers to stay and keep working at the University. To do so, ReaL, as the project is commonly called, offered the researchers a course with the possibility to develop their leadership abilities that would help them in their future research career. But also to introduce them to interdisciplinary contacts in an attempt to broaden their research network and to give them an increased general knowledge sharing. The data gathering for this study was partly done through surveys that were handed out to the participants at the last day of the course and by interviews with selected participants from the course. The quantitative results of the study show that the participants showed a positive feeling against the impact on the participant’s willingness to stay at the University of Umeå and that the support for their research careers and an enhance in their ability in communication and conflict management was highly contributed towards their willingness to stay at the university. ReaL as a support tool for the participants was also a highly contributed factor for their willingness to stay. The Qualitative results on the other hand shows a more complex situation. Even thou that the project had a positive impact, other external factors paid more contribution to the researcher’s willingness to stay then what the quantitative results shows. These factors were the layout of the city of Umeå, their family situation and their partner’s works situation.

Streszczenie:
This research endeavor contributes to a better understanding of the career development of adolescent mothers by (a) highlighting the contextual considerations; (b) examining the existing body of literature; (c) contributing to the research on adolescent mothers' career adaptability, resiliency, and obstacles; and (c) proposing ways to bridge the research to practice gap. An ecological examination of the contextual considerations associated with adolescent pregnancy and motherhood provided pertinent information on which to base a culturally sensitive framework to examine the career development of adolescent mothers using the concepts of career adaptability and resiliency and an assessment of obstacles that may impede their career development. The culturally sensitive framework was used in two studies conducted to better understand the career development of adolescent mothers. The first was a content analysis designed to provide a better understanding of the published literature and to direct a research study. Content analysis findings revealed the need to develop and implement comprehensive programs for adolescent mothers that are strength-based, responsive to areas of need, and foster career development skills/knowledge and resiliency. Using the results of the content analysis, a study was designed to examine the relationships among career adaptability, resiliency, and perceived obstacles to career development with a convenience sample of adolescent mothers. Results indicated that these adolescent mothers were similar to non-mothering peers in the planning and decision making dimensions of career adaptability but lower in exploration. Traits of personal resiliency and emotional reactivity were comparable to non-mothering peers, but relational resiliency was lower. Obstacles most often cited as impeding career development were pressing immediate needs and educational/career related concerns. Finally, the need to bridge the research to practice gap is discussed including considerations related to practitioners, organizations, and communication. In an effort to bridge the research to practice gap, the Interactive Systems Framework (ISF) is proposed as a model for communicating with practitioners through Synthesis and Translation, Support, and Delivery systems. The model is presented as an example for sharing with practitioners a culturally sensitive framework on the career adaptability of adolescent mothers supported by dissemination and implementation of research findings.

Fox, Joanna Ruth. "The relevance of recovery to carers of people who have schizophrenia". Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2013. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/312143/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Recovery is a new concept positing that people with schizophrenia can lead fulfilling, satisfying, and productive lives. Family carers often play a helpful but largely unacknowledged role in the support of service users with schizophrenia, and the nature of their contribution to and their role in recovery has hitherto not been investigated. This original PhD explores whether learning about the recovery approach through participation in a training intervention changes the way carers view recovery, whether they find the concept helpful, whether it modifies their behaviour, and their evaluation of the intervention. A participatory action research methodology was applied in this study, actively supported by a steering group consisting of different stakeholders. Training on the recovery approach was delivered to a group of eleven carers to explore their response to the recovery concept. The training programme was delivered by me and a carer, utilising my personal experience as a service user with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. Focus groups and individual, semi-structured follow-up interviews were applied to assess self-reported changes in attitudes and behaviours. Mainly qualitative data were collected with supplementary socio-demographic data. The analysis of the qualitative data suggests that being more ‘recovery-aware’ gives carers increased hope and optimism for their own and the service user’s future. Greater awareness of the impact of caring upon the service user’s life helps them to begin to care in such a way as to promote recovery in the service user, and gain more confidence in their own expertise-by-caring. Professionals have a key role to play in recovery, a three-cornered partnership between the carer, professionals and the service user is desirable. The carers evaluated the training programme as helpful, and particularly valued its authenticity as it was led by a service user and carer trainers. Conclusions suggest that recovery is a helpful concept for carers. It shows that learning about recovery helps them to care more effectively for the service user and for themselves. It suggests the usefulness of developing a recovery concept for carers based on reconciliation of their caring identity, their caring role and their relationships with the service user and professionals. Recovery for the service user and for the carer requires support from professionals, based on a partnership service model, a contribution to the development of recovery practice. The training programme is a useful way of conveying the hope in recovery and is strengthened by the service user perspective of recovery.

Streszczenie:
This study has its origins in a question posed by a patient diagnosed with a psychotic illness, as to why her husband could not administer depot injection. Following local and national discussion the study aims were; - to explore the elements of risk management involved in enabling carers (supportive persons) to give depot injections - to develop a training package that may be useful for others to use should such a request be made - to establish whether enabling supportive persons to give depot injections would have an effect on the relationship between the user (recipient of the medication) and the supportive person (giver of medication) - to ascertain the views, concerns and attitudes of medical staff (prescribers) and mental health nurses (administrators of depot injections) about enabling carers/relatives (supportive persons) to give depot intramuscular injection medication. An action research study informed by empowerment theoretical perspectives and influenced by recovery philosophies was used to explore the issues about ‘supportive person’ depot administration. Methods used to collect data included case studies, interviews, observation, reflection and three validated evaluation tools. Data were analysed through thematic analysis, and alongside establishing data, relating to the study aims, additional themes i.e. stigma, disclosure, concealment and trust evolved from the data. The study has relevance for clinical practice, policy and service provision. Current government policies promote choice and collaborative working and health and social care staff are encouraged to be responsive to the views of mental health service users and carers in relation to their experiences and expectations of care. Mental health services are being asked to deliver and translate these policies into practice alongside expectations of gainful employment for service users.

abstract: Research has revealed that familial concerns and obligations do impact the career decision making of people who shift their career goal away from the research academy and towards careers that are perceived as less intensive in terms of time and productivity demands. However, this same research line does not explain whether or not those who persist in a research professorship career aspiration experience the same familial concerns and obligations as those who shift or compromise on that goal. In line with the theory of circumscription and compromise (TCC), the current study examined specific accessibility concerns, or perceptions of barriers associated with implementing a preferred career, that contribute to doctoral student career decision making. More specifically, two groups including those who shifted their career path away from the research professorship (compromisers) and those whose career paths remain geared towards the research professorship (persisters) were examined by multivariate analysis of variance with a covariate (MANCOVA) to determine how accessibility concerns differ according to group membership. Accessibility concerns were also examined for gender differences. Results from multivariate and between-subjects follow up tests point to significant differences between the two groups on two accessibility concerns, planning for a career and family and some components of work-time flexibility preferences. Compromisers reported significantly higher preferences for work-time flexibility and scored higher on the planning for a career and a family measure when compared to persisters. No gender differences in accessibility concerns were found but female persisters were less likely than male persisters to indicate plans for children/presence of children. This study provides support for the TCC as applied to doctoral student career development and provides evidence that doctoral student persisters and compromisers do not experience accessibility concerns in the same way.

In recent years, the rate about recidivists of inmates remains high in Taiwan, and it is not easy to rehabilitate with people under custody. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the criminal career through longitudinal research. Based on the theory of criminology, this study traces the data of 959 adult people under custody for 15 years, observes the dynamic life change of them, explores their criminal career and influencing factors, and constructs a theoretical model for explaining recidivism, then provides preventive strategies for reducing recidivism. The research materials are the survey data of " the prediction of recidivism: the impact of life stress, social control and social learning on adult recidivism and its preventive measures", the project Chen Yushu, Lin Jianyang, etc. commissioned by the National Science Council from 2000 to 2002, and tracked the sample until 2015. The effective sample was 893 (93.1%). The study found that: (1) After 15 years of follow-up, 528 re-offenders in the sample, and the recidivism rate is 59.1%. In terms of the type of recidivism, 40.9% are desisters, 39.8% are occasional re-offenders and 19.4% are persistent offenders (42 of them have committed crimes for more than 30 years). (2) Regarding the phenomenon of recidivism, the times of recidivisms is inversely proportional to the number of re-offenders, and is concentrated in a small number of people with the potential trait of "chronic offenders". (3) The crime of recommit are drug-related crimes, including at least 49.2%, while those who committed offenses against public safety are 10.2%. The recidivism of addicts is worth noting. (4) The persistent offenders accounted for 80.3% of the combinative criminals, and their criminal behaviors are diversified. (5) The peak period of re-offending of the sample is concentrated within one year after the prison (150 people, accounting for 28.4%). The re-offenders accounted for 53.4% of the samples within 3 years after the prison, while the persistent offenders recommit within 3 years (69.9%), and 5 years (86.6%). Therefore, these offenders should be timely tracked, assisted or monitored. In terms of influencing factors: (1) gender, age, education level, marital status, age of first offense, past drug abuse experience, self-reported delinquent and criminal experience, low self-control, social control and conflict, lifestyle, deviant peers, and stress response, have significant correlation or difference with the criminal career. (2) Gender, age, education level, number of imprisonment, drug abuse situation, and recreational lifestyle are the common influencing factors of “recidivism” and “no-recommit interval”. (3) The results of SEM analysis of recidivism showed that early criminal experience and life style have significant direct influence on the number of crimes, while low self-control, early family attachment, early negative life experience, and positive social control, have significant indirect influence. The research results verify the General Theory of Crime, the Age-Graded Informal Social Control Theory of Criminal and the Life-Course model of interdependence, among which the predictive power of the Age-Graded Informal Social Control Theory is the strongest. Finally, based on the research results, the recommendations of correction, rehabilitation and prevention recidivism to adult offenders are proposed.

This research is based on the six objects of the outstanding young generation in Taiwan. By the deep interviews, the researcher knows the development and progress of the transferring of careers and also explores the factors that influence the career transferring. As for the data analysis, the researcher adapts the way of "entirety-- part-- entirety" to do the data analyzing and realizes and constructs the progress of the transferring of careers and the related factors. The conclusions are as the followings: 1. the career in schools (1) education in the family: Parents put much emphasis on the education of the outstanding young generation and long for children's success, while the style of discipline in family is democratic and full of freedom and the relations between parents and children are harmonious and close. (2) school days of the outstanding young generation: Their grades in elementary and junior high schools are excellent, while during senior high school periods, they do well on the extra-curricular activities. And during college or graduate school periods, they develop the ability of individual thinking and start to think about future career. (3) aspects of school education: Schools can provide nice learning environment but cannot meet the needs of the outstanding young generation as for the career counseling guidance. However, teachers in schools can guide these students to cultivate the ability of speculation as well as to develop the correct philosophy. 2. the transferring of careers (1) the reasons for career transferring: The outstanding young generation give up their original jobs and long for challenge and development for themselves due to the reasons, such as interests, sense of achievement, yearning for other jobs, being full of foresight, or even emotional trammels. (2) the strength for supporting career transferring: These three aspects make the six objects of the outstanding young generation keep going in career transferring: sense of achievement, wide visions, and mind for continuing learning. (3 ) the lives of career transferring: New jobs and the related environment excite them and they overcome some difficulties by III perseverance and enthusiasm. What makes them perform better in their professions is family's supporting, friends' encouragement, their boss' appreciating and promotion, and the supporting from the very other one. 3. the aspects of knowing oneself: A person who wants to succeed must face and accept himself or herself so that he or she can be confident and be aware of what's he or she needs. Furthermore, he or she can explore and develop his or her advantages and strengthen his or her abilities to solve problems. The improvement of technology and the change of younger generation’s (Generation Y) Work value make gig economy popular recently. More and more people choose to become a portfolio worker. However, I suppose that only individuals with their profession (knowledge workers) can have a better career than without it. There is not much research on young knowledge portfolio workers before. To know about this group of people better, I interview seven young knowledge workers who choose portfolio career in Taiwan, and analyze the influence of the personal factors (personal characteristics, motives and career developmental goal, and family) and resistive and supportive factors (time management, social network, and the attitudes from the full-time job company) bring to them.

The purpose of this study is to probe into the current state of nursing students‘ bullied experiences in the workplace and their hopes of careers in the future. Furtherly, this study explores the influences and the correlation between the two factors. It is based on “ structured questionnaire” and gathering information by “ Negative Acts Questionnaire Revised” (NAQ-R) and “ the Trait Hope Scale”. The study sample taken from the nursing students from a central college, a southern nursing medical center which has a medical center, regional nurses, local nurses and the specialist nursing students in clinical nursing practice in hospitals. This study takes purposive samples with a total of 500 questionnaires and the effective 387 sample (effective rate 77.4%). The way to analyze data includes Descriptive Statistics, Independent Sample t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson’s Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient and Multiple Stepwise Regression Analysis. The results shows the following conditions. 1.The bullied exprience for nursing students in internship workplaces is from “never” to “happen occasionally”. 2.The nursing students are full of bright hopes for the future career. 3.The different educational systems, the school locations and the nursing-related working experience have significant differences with bullied experience. 4.The different educational systems, the students’ interests and the nursing-related working experience have a significant impact on their hopes for careers. 5.Students’ bullied experience in internship workplaces has no strong relationship with their hopes for future careers. So students think that bullied experience in internship workplaces will not affect their hopes for future careers. 6.Nursing students who have interests in nursing, who are from five-year academic educational system, who have the nursing-related experience and students whose average monthly household income is below $ 30,000 can be clearly predicted their hopes for future careers. It has 13.5% explained variance. According to the result, this study will help teachers and nursing staff at workplaces not only understand the thoughts of bullied nursing students but create a healthy and safe nursing environment for every nursing student. The students’ healthy and wonderful internship experience and feelings will also strengthen the willings for the future nurses to enter the nursing workplaces.

Abstract In order to comply with the trend of the times and realize gender equality in employment, Capitol Police Board extends gradually the gender limitation in recruiting police officers and also restricts that the newly-employed-policewomen should work in field service offices. And among all the field service offices organized by police, it is police station that has the most complex working properties. Female officers working there are not only those who are rarely seen before but also those who are confronted with the greatest pressure as well as the most challenges. This study aims at understanding the influence of gender occupation segregation on policewomen’s work and the influence of police’s organizational adaptiveness on them. Using qualitative research design and based on literature review, this study designs three types of interview outlines, such as policewomen, police inspectors, policemen, etc, as its research tools. This paper chooses five policewomen, two police inspectors and three policemen, amounting to ten in total, as interviewees. Through analyzing the data got from qualitative interview, we can conclude that: 1.There are differences in the policewomen’s understanding about police services. 2.Dormitory plan of the policewomen needs to be improved. 3.Policewomen’s work gear needs to be greatly improved. 4.Independence of policewomen in work is being challenged. 5.It is hard for the policewomen to adapt themselves to services like taking big turns, dangerous inspections, stopping and inspecting. And they are considered unreliable in doing these services. 6.Policewomen’s unique affinity can help to promote the police organization’s image. 7.Chief leaders of the police station owns a high degree of technique as well as wisdom. 8.Police organization must establish a good and suitable set of adjusting methods for the common services of policemen and policewomen. Based on the topic of “The Research of the Impact of Gender Occupational Segregation on the Policewomen Careers and the Organizational Adaptation”, this paper gives these eight following suggestions for the reference of related offices. 1.Active external advocation. Women who intend to become policewomen should have a qualified knowledge of police work. 2.Improve the office condition as well as living condition of policewomen. 3.Enhance the efforts in planning and designing the policewomen’s work gear. 4.Perfect the police duty system and rationalize the system of duty and rest. 5.In order to comply with the policewomen’s physiological need, the duty plan can be properly adjusted. 6.Intensify the efforts in advocating the respect for policewomen’s role in law enforcement. 7.Develop policewomen’s independence in duty. 8.Subsequent research suggestions.

This paper aims to seek to contribute to current debates about the effectiveness of different types of gender equality interventions in the academic context. This paper presents an argument for the need to move beyond an individual-structural dichotomy in how such interventions are perceived. The paper draws on an action-research case-study, the Through the Glass Ceiling project, to challenge the idea that “individual”/single-actor interventions serve only to reinforce underlying inequalities by attempting to “fix the women”.It is suggested that actions that support women in their careers have the potential to achieve a degree of transformation at individual, cultural and structural levels when such actions are designed with an understanding of how individuals embody the gendered and gendering social structures and values that are constantly being produced and reproduced within society and academia. The case study highlights the benefits of supporting individuals as gendered actors in gendering institutions and of facilitating the development of critical gender awareness, suggesting that such interventions are most effective when undertaken as part of an integrated institutional equality agenda. By calling attention to the ongoing mutual construction of actors and practices in organizations, this paper seeks to make both a conceptual contribution to how we understand the (re)production and potential transformation of gender relations in academia and to influence wider policy dialogues on diversity at work.

Thusi, Sithembile. "The advancement of women’s careers : is it a core strategic imperative in South African organisations?" Diss., 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/44123.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Gender disparities are still prevalent universally, and are often expressly and tacitly condoned, even in highly developed societies. In South Africa, women make up 52% of the population yet, only 44% of working South Africans are women (BWASA, 2012). However, recent trends show that a significant enough number of women do make it to all levels of positions in organisations, and that women generally have a great desire to lead. Conversely, very few women think or believe that their organisations provide them with the necessary and adequate support, in order to be able do so. Thus, in spite of the active efforts and commitments made by many South African organisations to influence women’s career advancement, it is still unfortunately not clear if the initiatives and programmes that are implemented are a core strategic imperative, or whether they are merely part of a peripheral agenda. As a result, this study takes a contingency approach to examine whether the career advancement of women is indeed a core strategic initiative, or whether it is peripheral in South African organisations. The good news is that some organisations are excelling in their commitment to empowering female roles and role-models in the workplace, and this study aims to understand why these organisations are doing exceptionally well, and why others are lagging behind. A qualitative method, which is exploratory in nature, was adopted to collect and analyse the data for this study. Fifteen individuals, who constitute a sample, were interviewed; and the scope was limited to the Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Human Resource executives or any other executives responsible for diversity in the respective organisation. The main findings in this research were as follows: Firstly, the agenda that is most likely to be framing women’s career advancement in the organisations is one that is underscored by moral or ethical imperatives, and this is done in order to attempt to ensure that all forms of inequalities that existed are eradicated, so as to respond to the social pressure for ethical and moral transparency. Secondly, the organisations do understand the critical issues of women’s career advancement, but they fail to recognize the significant rewards of real women empowerment. Thirdly, some organisations seem to be doing exceptionally well, while others are sadly lagging behind. Finally, most organisations do not have clear measurement and monitoring frameworks to track their progress and impact in women career advancement initiatives.

The purpose of this ethnographic study is to explore the following: 1. The counsellors’ experience of the process of career counselling provided to students at a distance learning institution 2. My own experiences of doing counselling with Unisa students. 3. How Holland’s career theory, the social cognitive career theory and the chaos theory of careers could shape the process of career counselling. The themes that emanated from the stories of six counsellors indicate that they view counselling as a continuous process wherein it is necessary to strike a balance through blended counselling between the needs of individuals versus helping the multitude of anonymous students. In order to facilitate counselling effectively, counsellors need resources and in order to develop these resources they use a diversity of career theories which act as a frame of reference. Attention is given to the development of career counsellors’ identity and self-confidence and how this impacts on the counsellors’ growth. The recommendations of this study hold the promise of contributing to the counselling process at the DCCD.

The purposes of this study are to realize the developmental contexts of career themes of the narrator, who is considering inheriting family career, and how the culture and the society influence him to make the decision. Furthermore, the changes of his expectation on his ideal career in the future also reflected during the interviews. This study is based on one young male, who is 25 years old. There are ten interviews, sixteen hours in total. The methodologies thesis is narrative research. The narrative interview data is analyzed with the holistic-content method. Several findings according to the data analysis are as follows: 1.The career theme of the narrator, who is considering to inheriting family career, is “To find a complete self in the process of indentifying himself with the role of eldest son”. And the connotations of development contexts are as follows: (1) Early experiences during his childhood play important roles in the development contexts of career themes, and the experiences have powerful influence in shaping his narrative tone. (2) The reciprocal effects among his personal life roles mold his career pattern. (3) The development contexts of career themes are the process of searching resolutions to essential living problems. 2.These influences from social contexts are: “Male’s obligation towards families”, “Being a son with filial piety, he must become the successor of the family career”, “If other eldest sons can do it, you have to do it, too!” And the connotations of these are as follows: (1) Filial piety is extremely emphasized. (2) The stereotype of gender role: The successors of a family must be sons. (3) Pursuing diploma would be the only family approved alternative. (4) “Self” is confined to life roles constructed by social and cultural expectations. 3.His expectation of ideal career in the future was changed as follows. (1) During the sixteen-hour interview, the narrator gradually reconstructed his original viewpoint of being a successor into new one. Undertaking the family career is acceptable and even could be more meaningful than he had expected. (2) The long forgotten and neglected family history had the chance to be discussed and rediscovered. The narrator even got the chance to identify himself with the family spirit. (3)Through narration, people could get new insights. And these are anchor points and energies for the career development in the future. The narration is like an initiation empowers the narrator to have more confidence to follow his own will and in the meantime not to violate his social and cultural roles in a family.

Abstract in English and Afrikaans
The clinical research enterprise is an industry in crisis due to the challenges investigators and sites experience to stay viable. Clinical researchers might therefore also become an “endangered species”. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of early career research investigators’ experience of clinical research. A generic, exploratory, descriptive and contextual qualitative design was used. Fourteen participants were recruited and interviewed face-to-face from three different clinical research sites in the Gauteng. Data were analysed thematically and cyclically. Findings indicated that early career investigators entered the clinical research “maze” for various reasons and levels of preparedness. As they explored the maze, early career investigators found their way into a labyrinth, all the while making discoveries about the clinical environment and their own desires. They finally reached a point where they needed to move beyond the centre of the labyrinth and ask ‘Quo Vadis’ (where are we going to)?

Contemporary media broadcasts movie and television products repeatedly to shape culture and fashion trend, which makes movie and television products have huge influence. After the rise of the cultural industry, movie and television products are included in the industry and become valuable culture commodity. Screenwriter as a culture worker and the key man of culture commodity has been neglected for a long time in Taiwan audiovisual industry. Therefore, this study focuses on Taiwanese screenwriter career and explores job profile. The content market of the audiovisual industry in Taiwan has been occupied by foreign products recently especially the content from South Korea and China. This tendency also shows the rapid development and the influence of audiovisual industry in South Korea and China. This study first quotes the relevant references of cultural labor to analyze the status and features of screenwriter. Then, it discusses the operation of the screenwriter profession under the development of audiovisual industry in South Korea and China. Finally, it analyzes the existing problems and dilemmas of Taiwanese screenwriters. By conducting In-depth Interviewing, this study interviewed current senior screenwriters focusing on the operation and condition of Taiwanese screenwriter profession. The study finds that under the impact of the capital market, screenwriters are a weaker group. However, if we do not pay attention to the rights and interests of cultural workers, the long-term ignorance will cause the decline of quality in culture commodity or even the fault in industry. Therefore, it is necessary for screenwriter to rely on strong professional organizations to defend their rights and to gain basic protection. Although there are many resources and matching platforms for screenwriters; however, the absence of a systematic mechanism makes Taiwanese screenwriter only depends on their own fortune to grow. In the future, it is necessary to establish a combination system of professional training and matching platform to constantly provide professionals and works in the industry. Only by improving the existing problems and treating well to screenwriters can the culture commodities fully show their value and expand the effect of the cultural economy.

Parker, Heather Lynette Polly. "Career Communities". 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/1029.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Careers link the inner, subjective, world of self with the outer, objective, world of institutions and society. As society increasingly reflects turbulence and fragmentation, people may still seek the sense of community that the old career arrangements were expected to provide. Taking inspiration from "new science" ideas of self-organising, and "intelligent career" ideas of individual learning, this thesis posits a new concept of "career communities". These are presented as an alternative organising structure through which the inter-dependence of career experiences and the environment in which they unfold is recognised. The thesis is focused around three questions. The first question relates to the application of intelligent career theory at a group level of analysis. Its exploration links three intelligent career "ways of knowing' to recent conceptions of communal learning. The second question concerns enhancing our understanding of career growth through career communities, and the learning and social opportunities these communities provide. The third question - in keeping with the tenets of new science - asks how career communities function as attractors in the way careers self-organise into collective work arrangements. The methodology adopted in this research advances an explicit theoretical connection between the (individual) subjective and (communal) inter-subjective worlds. The approach begins with an application of the 'intelligent career card sort' (ICCS) which elicits data on an individuals' subjective career according to three interdependent "ways of knowing". The results for the career community under consideration are then aggregated to provide input data for the elicitation of inter-subjective meaning through focus group discussions. This data is then analysed by reference to a typology of ten "pure types" of career community developed as part of this thesis. The thesis comprises four empirical studies. A preliminary pilot study of management consultants was conducted to ascertain the appropriateness of the methodology. Study#1 involved all workers in a non-for-profit organisation focused on rehabilitation of victims of sexual abuse. This group was expected to hold a strong ideological attachment to the work they performed. Study#2 involved Leased Executives, selected to represent the growing proportion of people experiencing contingency employment, and also because of their apparently high sense of professionalism in their work. Study#3 involved a group of Pacific Island professionals, predominantly from the public sector. This group was selected because they represent an ethnic minority whose cultural traditions are inherently collective rather than individual in orientation. The results communicate the inter-subjective meanings elicited at the group level of analysis. The patterns, which emerged from the interplay among the three ways of knowing, were analysed according to the typology of career communities previously developed. Each empirical study showed that in reality a hybrid of career community types was evident rather than any pure type. A comparison across the groups illustrates the principal differences among the groups in the career issues that they faced. The results provide support for the concept of career communities as an alternative organising principle behind people's careers, and one that extends beyond any single employment setting.
