Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of program type and selected predictor variables on the vocational placement and feelings of self-esteem of disabled male workers. It was predicted that: (1) a physical capacity assessment program (PCA), designed by the investigator, would result in a higher rate of successful vocational placement than conventional placement techniques, in a shorter period of time and with a better vocational match; (2) increased measures of self-esteem would be experienced by the PCA group and at a more significant level than conventional vocational programs; (3) there would not be a significant interaction between the vocational placement variables and the independent variables of age, degree of disability and injury type; and (4) there would not be a significant effect of selected moderator variables between groups on the vocational placement variables. Fifty disabled workers were randomly selected from the active caseloads of the Vocational Rehabilitation Department of the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia for participation in the study. Their average age was 33.32 years, and their average length of time on wage loss was 245 days. All subjects were injured as the result of an industrial accident, were no longer undergoing medical treatment, had been cleared for a return to work but were suffering from a residual disability that prevented them from returning to the work force. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions involving vocational counselling with job search training (JS) and vocational counselling with physical capacity assessment (PCA). Following completion of the program, subjects began job search activities and were monitored for a period of 6 months or until successful vocational placement was achieved. Data analyses showed that: there was a significant main effect between groups for success in vocational placement with PCA placing more subjects than job search; there were no significant differences between groups on measures of self-esteem following completion of the programs; there was a significant interaction effect of age, degree of disability and type of injury with success in vocational placement and; there was a significant interaction effect of several moderator variables including marital status and length of time on wage loss with success in vocational placement and time to vocational placement. The results tend to support the use of physical capacity assessment for the guantification of individual capacity to perform work. Further, the results suggest that the use of PCA information in the identification and selection of appropriate vocational alternatives can significantly enhance the success of vocational placement disabled workers. Recommendations were made for future research.

Thesis (MTech (Graphic Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016.
The aim of this study was to examine how students experience the transition from the classroom to the workplace. This research explored what factors students found problematic and which factors was helpful during the transition. This research was qualitative and this study focused on the experiences of the participants and all data was collected from their perception of work practice. I used Activity Theory as a theoretical framework to compile and organize relevant data. Data was gathered using video recordings, hand written journal entries and individual interviews. The research was conducted in an on-campus design studio that is situated within the Design Faculty at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The reason for choosing Design Logic as a site is the following; the studio sits neatly between the classroom and the workplace, although the studio is in a protected environment, most of the elements that are present in a real world setup is reflected within Design Logic i.e. the stresses of satisfying demanding clients, working with budgets, liaising with suppliers and the ever present looming deadlines all form part of the daily make-up of Design Logic. Although the starting point of the study was to search for the problem areas of the student’s transition into the work place, the analyzed data revealed the dissimilarities between the two systems and how the participants overcame the difference i.e. shifting identities and rules and norms to develop new skills suited for the work place. The workspace opened a Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and highlighted the value and importance of work practice in preparation of graduates for industry.

Streszczenie:
Visual arts educational practice has been built upon a tradition which has neglected the work of women artists. The reasons for this are explored in the introduction to this research and in the literature review. The research will examine aspects of the lived experience and work of a Western Australian woman visual artist within a context of the traditional cultural and educational paradigms which influenced her development as a visual artist and which, it may be argued, continue to influence all visual artists. The participant in the research, Helen Grey Smith, has been a prominent member of the visual arts community of Western Australia since the late 1940s. Helen Grey-Smith's chosen fields were textile printing, collage and painting in acrylics. She continues to work at her studio in Pemberton. The research was conducted as a hermeneutic/phenomenological study, as explained by Van Manen (1990). This method allows for the study of unique human experience and is consistent with the values of feminist research. The method of data collection was through a series of tape recorded conversations conducted at Helen Grey-Smith's home. Material from the transcribed conversations is contained in the appendices, which are designed to help the reader gain a full understanding of the nature of this artist's life and experiences. Through the transcription and analysis of these conversations, themes which emerged formed the basis for analysis and reflection.

Streszczenie:
This study contributes to an understanding of the causes, consequences and complexities of gender inequity in career success (high levels of status and salary) in the New Zealand accounting profession. Sixty-nine (twenty-seven male and forty-two female) experienced Chartered Accountants were interviewed about their career histories. A feminist, interpretative and qualitative approach was followed and NVIVO was used for analysis. The first significant contribution of the study was the identification of five work/family strategies based on levels of family and work involvement (Traditional Men, Traditional Women, Family Balancers, Stepping Stone Men and Work First Women). Secondly, the level of family responsibilities explained career success much better than gender alone, although these two factors were commonly (but not always) directly related. The third contribution was the revision of the three-pronged model previously offered by Whiting & Wright (2001) to explain gender inequities in salary and status in the New Zealand accounting profession. Because the original model was derived from quantitative data, using qualitative data to revise the model constituted a sequential mixed method (pragmatic) approach. In the revised model, gender centrality and the three explanatory categories (Attributes, Structure and Attitudes) were removed. Career success was enhanced by high career aspirations (related to perceptions of stress, managerial and responsibility requirements and remuneration), long working hours and availability to clients, hard work, high technical competence and skills (enhanced by overseas experience), networking (less attractive to women), self-confidence (enhanced by mentoring for the least self-confident), flexibility to relocate if required (decreased by family and lifestyle ties) and large size and growth of the employing organisation. Most influential were career aspirations and a long hours/available work ethic. This demonstrated the pervasiveness of the male linear career model (derived from the male breadwinner-female carer family structure), that rewarded (in terms of progression) unilateral allegiance to the firm. Career aspirations, desire for responsibility, perceived ability to handle pressure, long hours, availability to clients, networking and possibly technical skills (if there were periods of extended leave) were all influenced by the Chartered Accountants level of family responsibilities. Those with the least family responsibilities (childless, Traditional Men and Work First Women) demonstrated unswerving commitment to the firm and were equally the most successful career wise. The impact of family responsibilities on career progression could be ameliorated by organisational cultural change. There were some indications of cultural change, being most prevalent in public sector and educational organisations. Enhancing conditions included a culture of flexibility and a concurrent atmosphere of trust, a less competitive work culture, absence of constant overtime demands and on-call work, encouraging top management who worked positively to retain and foster top performers over a longer period, and high level part-time positions supported by well-trained subordinate teams. To achieve these conditions provides an imminent challenge to organisations which employ Chartered Accountants, because the profession is increasing its proportion of females, has a younger generation more interested in work-life balance, and is losing many of its members overseas.

Abstract Up to the Republic’s end, the experiences of working-class children and youths continued to be distinct from their bourgeois peers. Even by the late 1930s, the majority of working-class youths entered into the workforce or a vocational training program upon completing primary school. During the interwar period, the Republic, aided by private welfare organizations, expanded its services for young workers and young delinquents. Vocational guidance officers and social workers relied on medical knowledge to provide more individualized care to young members of the working classes. However, as with their pre-war predecessors, these state and parastate actors provided such assistance to ensure that young members of the laboring classes joined the work force. During the interwar period, republican policy with regard to young people’s labor, vocational training, and welfare continued to preserve class-based divisions within childhood.

This chapter argues that the shape and style of classroom teaching make a tremendous difference in the work of bringing vocational reflection into a multi-faith environment. The author draws on insights from a variety of fields, including psychology, philosophy, and educational theory, to provide specific guidance about the geography and atmosphere of the classroom and about the kinds of learning that need to take place there. Greater attention to the affective domain, coupled with the creation of classroom spaces that students see as respectful of their particularities and differences, can create a positive space for vocational reflection and discernment across a variety of lifestances. The second half of the chapter offers a number of specific pedagogical exercises to accomplish this work, along with a discussion of how student engagement in this project might be appropriately evaluated. A rubric for such evaluation is also included.

Throughout her tenure at Kamehameha Schools, Pope continued her graduate work at the University of Chicago. Pope spent three separate semesters learning the latest educational methods from the most progressive leaders of the time in order to elevate education in Hawaii. She also traveled throughout the United States to consult with the brightest minds in the budding vocational education and social change movement. In turn, the movement’s leaders visited her. She was able to use her experiences to facilitate the first social survey of Honolulu, which contributed to the overhaul of labor laws, vastly improving working conditions for Hawaiian women. In 1910, Pope attended the first National Conference on Vocational Guidance in Boston. Educators, social workers, and corporate figures from 45 cities met to discuss how to improve the lives of immigrants by making sound vocational choices. Conference presenters and attendees included Jane Addams, Homer Folks, G. Stanley Hall, George Mead, Henry Metcalf, and Edward Thorndike. Pope joined these pioneers in the field of education and sociology for two days of stimulating discourse that ultimately ignited a national interest in public school career guidance. Pope advocated for a vocational bureau in Honolulu until her death.

This chapter describes the main levers to develop an efficient vocational training offer in the context of a strategic displayed willingness for continuous improvement and excellence. The challenge, for the parties (learners included) over their life course, is to make clear of: first, the issues of training (repository of skills with challenging situations); second, the training requirement specifications dealing with the pedagogical culture of the trainers, the design of the Formative Work Situation and the responsibilities of actors helped by their inventive use of innovative tools (brown paper mapping) for the guidance; third, the chosen multi-level organization to monitor and ensure compliance thanks to convenient processes for quality. Despite the perceived complexity and difficulty of Work Integrated Learning, the choice of alternation is a key element to target excellence. Indeed, the integrated constraint of training for and through the workplace enhances the relationship between parties, their involvement and active attitude while sharing outcomes, benefits and cost.

Abstract In this chapter, we shall present some results of our current research programme on the social representation of work among young Italians still at school. The topic of our study-work-has been addressed directly or indirectly by at least two traditions of psychological research, first in the context of vocational choice and guidance (see, for example, Abramson et al. 1979; Holland 1973; Super 1957) and more recently in studies on the development of economic concepts (for example Berti and Bambi 1988; Jahoda 1979; Stacey 1978, 1982). The perspective of our research, however, is different from both of these traditions.

Streszczenie:
About 5 per cent of the overall UK cancer burden can be attributed to occupational exposures. However, occupational physicians in clinical practice are most likely to be called upon to support and advise employed patients with non-occupational cancers. Support services in the UK are being reconfigured to help the growing population of cancer survivors to live full and active lives for extended periods. Returning to the workplace is a part of this goal, and occupational physicians are likely to see increasing numbers of adults seeking still to work after treatment for conditions that in the past would have led to ill health-related retirement. Set against these improvements in clinical outcome, and the increasing emphasis on support for patients who achieve long-term survival, is evidence that many working-age adults treated for the common cancers subsequently encounter financial and occupational difficulties. People with cancer often experience a loss in income as a result of their condition. Thus, although most working adults diagnosed with primary cancer return to work, a significant minority do not. Cancer is increasingly seen as an illness that can be effectively treated, but functional outcomes vary considerably. Cancer survivorship is considered to encompass people who are undergoing primary treatment, in remission following treatment, show no symptoms of the disease following treatment, or are living with active or advanced cancer. Occupational physicians may be requested to assess work capability and provide advice on workplace support for cancer survivors in any of the survivorship states. In the UK, 98 per cent of public sector and 30 per cent of private sector employers have access to occupational health services. Employers will normally seek guidance from these services on how to manage employees who have developed a serious illness such as cancer. This means that occupational physicians can be in a key position to coordinate the vocational rehabilitation of cancer survivors. This chapter offers an overview of the evidence on work capability, rehabilitation, and occupational risk assessment that may apply to adults diagnosed with a range of cancers.

Some individuals with disabilities are unable to work independently and often require additional instruction to complete basic tasks. To prepare students with disabilities for life after school, practitioners need to help them learn the skills necessary to live a happy, productive, and fulfilling life. Two technologies showing promise for such learning are augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications. This chapter will discuss how AR and VR can successfully be used to teach academic, social, and vocational skills to students with disabilities, including research that has been conducted to date. Additionally, guidance is provided for teachers seeking to use AR and VR in classroom and community learning environments. The chapter will conclude with directions for further research and future applications of AR and VR with students with disabilities.

The ability of residents and professional emergency responders to exchange information during an emergency is necessary to provide a more efficient rescue following major disasters. Simultaneously, the quick seismic damage evaluation is significant to provide guidance for emergency response and rescue after disaster. However, traditional field investigation needs immense cost in money, manpower and time to accomplish house-to-house investigation, which results in an inefficient work. Towards this, an emergency communication and quick seismic damage investigation method based on smartphone is proposed and realized with the assistant of an application E-Explorer. First, in emergency communication module, the communication is available by using the multipeer connectivity technology even without external network, which can help to deliver important information for personal survival. Second, in damage investigation module, E-Explorer integrates the functions of questionnaire and picture collection for damage phenomenon recording and image acquisition. Last, a big data sharing platform is built, to provide guidance for rescue workers, and collect damage information for quick intensity evaluation.

The personnel potential of the population is a significant factor affecting the successful development of the economy of the region and the country as a whole. The outflow of personnel, the imbalance in the human system, the low level of employment of graduates of vocational education, youth unemployment – all this is a serious problem, particularly due to lack of demand and the low prestige of the profession in a given place and time. This problem requires close attention from the educational authorities to the issues of career guidance, including in terms of its orientation on the basis of the economic state of the labor market.

Streszczenie:
Smart educational technology in the learning process at a vocational training institution directly correlates to the pedagogical and methodological preparation of teachers and their practical experience. The pedagogical preparation determines better learning outcomes, effective social and cultural expressions, and more qualitative guidance of the didactic process. In addition, teachers with the help of technology have the opportunity to draw attention to each student, help the learner to know himself and his or her field of professional expression. This case study examined the ability of vocational teachers to use various technologies in class. Study was conducted in five rural vocational training schools in Lithuania. Twenty five vocational teachers were interviewed using focus group interview format about their smart educational technology usage in teaching and contacting their students. Teachers were observed manipulating, transforming and allocating appropriate digital media, adapting teaching content and easily forming teaching-learning networks to achieve educational goals. Overall, the process described here showed that regardless of how long vocational teachers work at a rural school and what subjects they teach, mostly teachers communicated and collaborated through technologies with their students while presenting vocational teaching content. Finally, the technological competence of vocational teachers reflected the teacher's ability to carry out a certain vocational teaching process: the ability to perform technological operations, the skill to work with various materials, equipment and the mentoring capacity.
