A two meter rise in sea levels projected by the end of this century threatens the sovereignty of the Maldivian nation state. While flight from the Maldives to establish a new homeland elsewhere has been proposed, the culture and economy of this country is inextricably entrenched in its geophysical environment. Although the Maldives is known for super luxury resorts, the nation's government is poorly positioned to defend a population of 400,000 people spread across 1200 islands. This thesis proposes a strategy by which the international resort operator, an autonomous and independently funded entity, can be mobilized as an agent of coastal defense. Also investigated are issues of artificial reef ecology, defensive coastal infrastructures, and prefabricated composite construction and modularity.

Following the work of German-American curator Alexander Dorner (1893-1957) from his early curatorial career in Niedersachsen to professorships in New England, this dissertation explores the intersections of Euro-American modernism and developing ideations of experience within aesthetic philosophy. Dorner's work was formulated in deep engagement with (and often intentional contradiction to) the art theory being incubated in contemporaneous art institutions, pedagogies, and practices. His written texts and museum praxis responded to emerging notions of subjectivity, restoration, and perception in the aesthetic theory of Alois Riegl and Erwin Panofsky, art restoration mandates advocated by German museum leaders such as Max Sauerlandt and Kurt Karl Eberlein, and the artistic productions of El Lissitzky and Herbert Bayer. Against shifting expressions of democracy in Weimar Germany and the mid-century United States, Dorner's polemical focus on museum experience was, in effect, an attempt to train citizens for collective but heterogeneous social life.

Roman round temples are usually discussed either in the context of round buildings like baths and mausolea or on a case-by-case basis. Both approaches fail to reveal what makes round temples a distinct architectural type and moreover, what reasons can account for their use throughout the Roman world. By examining round temples from the Republic, when they are first attested, to the early fourth century AD, this thesis aims to explain why the round form had such a lasting appeal. It follows a chronological approach, discussing the evidence for individual temples and situating them within their historical, social, topographical, and architectural contexts. In a comparative analysis, the building components, materials, techniques, decorative details, and proportions employed by round temples are outlined to reveal influences on their design. The round temples discussed in this study are concentrated in Italy, Greece, and Asia Minor. While the earliest examples in Rome draw on Italic traditions, from the late Republic, round temples begin to reflect Greek trends. Greek tholoi and the Greek decorative repertory, balanced by Roman developments in design, have a lasting influence on round temples. Based on tholoi, scholars have assumed that Roman round temples honored Vesta and divinized heroes. While they were celebrated with a few examples, the majority were dedicated to other gods and goddesses. As a result, religious, social, topographical and aesthetic reasons are proposed to explain the enduring appeal of round temples. Like the motivations behind their foundations, the plans, dimensions, and proportional relationships employed by round temples are noted for their diversity. For their individuality and inventive spirit, round temples make a significant contribution to the Roman architectural repertory.

This PhD thesis investigates how political propaganda was carried out via architectural display by Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great in Rome during the mid-first century BC. Only recently have scholars begun to focus on the ideological meaning and importance of monuments in the context of the political struggles of the Late Republic; furthermore, while the figure of Caesar has recently seen re-assessment, the theatre of Pompey and its decorative programme and ideological meaning are still a matter of debate. Since architecture was one of the main media in a Roman politician’s efforts to gain prestige and support, my intention is to understand the political reasons and the propagandistic needs that led these two great figures to the promotion of particular buildings in a specific context. Furthermore, the diachronic development of the ideological content of those monuments is analysed, as well as the target of that content. The results of my research confirm that the political conflict between Caesar and Pompey was very visible in their monumental programmes, and demonstrate that these interventions progressively acquired new meanings in relation to political events and to the shifting balances of power. Finally, new interpretations are presented in connection to the plurality of meanings that a single propagandistic message could acquire according to the cultural education and social status of the groups and individuals for which it was intended.

The present study explores the relationship between language and architecture as symbolic systems against the background of the creation of independent Czechoslovakia at the end of World War I. It takes as its focus the Prague Castle, and the intent of the first President of Czechoslovakia, philosopher Thomas Garrigue Masaryk (1850--1937), to "democratize" the vast complex of historic structures that formed it, with the help of the Slovenian architect Joze Plecnik (1872--1957). To effect change in the charged, historically circumscribed spaces of the Castle can be viewed as a language analogy mainly in the terms of creating new relationships . Polysemy is a characteristic, sometimes dominant, feature of the transformation process.
In the hierarchy of public spaces, the Castle was meant to constitute the ultimate symbolic space not just for Prague, but for the entire nation. Memory as recollection, but also as imagination and ingegno, impelled symbolic action both verbally and architecturally. Plecnik's own "grammar of creation" sought constitutive forms in the traditions of Antiquity and ancient Egypt, in Masaryk's ideas of democratic governance as well as in the collective memory of the city. These were the informing principles that created a more layered referential field.
The invention of the tradition and symbolic identity of the Castle in the new context of republican Czechoslovakia was a complex process accompanied by competing narratives. Masaryk wished the Castle to become "a symbol of our [Czech and Slovak] national democratic ideals," and spoke of a need to "embody" the new parliament in search for an ethical existence rooted in faith and self-education, imbued with both scientific rigour and poetic making, and implemented through the everyday work by all citizens.
A unique example of another type of narrative is a body of correspondence addressed to Plecnik between 1920 and 1956 by the President's daughter, Alice Garrigue Masaryk (1879--1966), who represented her father in his role as patron and served as a conduit between him, the Castle Building Administration and Plecnik himself. A close reading of these letters explores to interrogate the role of language in both the transmission of tradition and in the actual process of architectural making and constitutes an original contribution to scholarship.

The vast contributions made by Louis XV at Versailles are some of the finest examples of painting, sculpture, architecture and decorative arts produced during the 18th century. Oddly, the Appartement Prive, the Petit Appartements, and the Opera, among other examples, have been the most overlooked, criticized, and for a time denigrated and condemned achievements made at Versailles. This state of affairs prompted a historiographical examination of 18th-century Versailles to understand, odd and erroneous interpretations. In the process of analyzing and categorizing the literature and scholarship on 18th-century Versailles, certain patterns of interpretation, many of them contradictory and inconsistent, appeared. The thrust of this thesis is to map-out these patterns--particularly from the period of 1870-1930 when a remarkable scholarly and physical renewal was taking place at Versailles--and to discover and understand the underlying ideological motivations for these shifting patterns of interpretation.

The acoustical qualities of performance halls of Turkish Early Republican period in Ankara is studied in parallel to the acoustical design of performance halls in Europe which may reveal similarities in case halls. Detailed 3-D models of the halls for acoustical simulations based on the original design data have been prepared and results are to be compared with acoustically recognized halls in the world.

This creative project presents architectural and design principles of the landscape features define as Hispanic gardens, which were built by the Spanish conquistadors of the island of La Hispaniola since 1492 up to the seventeenth century in La Ciudad Colonial of Santo Domingo, today capital of the Dominican Republic. This study researches the urban and architectural characteristics of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo as well as the main elements that define the Spanish gardens and also some of the current strategies and techniques for garden restoration. Those aspects are a background and support to the identification of these Hispanic gardens and to the proposed guidelines for the rehabilitation of these historic areas. To fulfill a further purpose of promoting an integral restoration* of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, the goals of the project relate to the areas of landscape and architecture, and to the social and educational contexts. Therefore, the recommended guidelines for the rehabilitation of the historic Hispanicgardens of La Ciudad Colonial of Santo Domingo are a preliminary step toward a different approach of the preservation of this cultural landscape.Integral restoration, to this project, it is understood as a plan of preservation, which valorizes all the aspects concerning to architecture, landscape, and the urban and social patterns related to La Ciudad Colonial of Santo Domingo.

La thèse de doctorat est consacrée aux aspects afférents à l’art dans l’œuvre de Marcus Terentius Varro, encyclopédiste romain du premier siècle avant notre ère. Son œuvre, en partie conservée, en partie réduite à l’état de fragments, a été transmise notamment par Pline l’Ancien, Aulu-Gelle et différents grammairiens romains. En guise de propédeutique, un développement sur un ouvrage de Varron, les 'Disciplinarum Libri', est proposé, situant les arts libéraux dans un cadre philosophique, suivi de la genèse de la critique d’art varronienne, remontant à Platon et Aristote ainsi qu’à Xénocrate d’Athènes. En parallèle, les conceptions artistiques de Cicéron, contemporain de Varron, sont présentées. S’ensuit une partie consacrée à l’architecture qui s’intéresse aux demeures des hommes, puis aux demeures des dieux. Un excursus se focalise sur la 'uilla' de Varron à Casinum ainsi que sur son tombeau. Dans la partie suivante sont présentés les regards du Réatin sur les sculpteurs grecs et hellénistiques, puis sur ceux de son temps, chacun faisant l’objet d’un développement particulier. La même approche est ensuite employée au sujet de la peinture, proposant des notices individuelles sur les peintres grecs et romains et offrant des prolongements par le biais de l’étude d’une Satire Ménippée particulièrement liée au sujet de la thèse ainsi que par l’analyse de l’œuvre qui a offert à Varron un terrain privilégié pour exprimer ses jugements de critique d’art : le 'De imaginibus'. Une ample synthèse conclusive expose les influences exercées par les opinions et les écrits d’un Varron aux goûts esthétiques marqués d’éclectisme, appréciant des œuvres du passé et du présent, figurant des dieux et des hommes, des paysages et des objets, avec toutefois une préférence marquée pour le classicisme et la tradition. Enfin, un développement final envisage la question de l’influence des écrits varroniens relatifs aux arts sur le classicisme augustéen ainsi que sur la politique de restauration conduite par le vainqueur d’Actium
This thesis is devoted to aspects related to art in the work of Marcus Terentius Varro, a Roman encyclopedist from the first century BCE. His work, partly preserved, partly reduced to fragments, was passed on namely by Pliny the Elder, Aulus Gellius, and various Roman grammarians. The first part will emphasize on one of Varro’s works, the 'Disciplinarum Libri', in order to situate liberal arts in a philosophical framework, and on the genesis of varronian art criticism, dating back to Plato and Aristotle as well as Xenocrates of Athens. In parallel the artistic concepts of Cicero, contemporary with Varro, are presented. This section is followed by one dedicated to architecture, relating to men’s dwellings, and the homes of the gods. An excursus focuses on the villa of Varro in Casinum and on his tomb. In the next section, the views of the Reatinian on Greek and Hellenistic sculptors as well as the ones of his era are presented, each being subject of a particular development. The same approach is then applied on painting, offering individual notes on the Greek and Roman painters. Extensions are brought through the study of a Menippean Satire which is particularly related to the topic of the thesis, and by the analysis of 'De imaginibus', the work which gave Varro a fertile ground for expressing judgments of art criticism. A thorough conclusive synthesis exposes the influences exerted by the opinions and writings of Varro, whose aesthetic tastes can be described as eclectic. He enjoyed the works of past and present, depicting gods and men, landscapes and objects, but kept a marked preference for classicism and tradition. A final development considers the question of the influence of art-related varronian writings on Augustan classicism, and considers the restoration policy led by the victor of Actium

This thesis examines three photomontages by Berlin Dada artist Hannah Höch, The Beautiful Girl (1919-20), an untitled work from 1920, and Dada-Tanz (1922). It discusses how Höch used photomontage to fulfill the Dada mission of incorporating chaos into art as an expressive means of commenting on the sociopolitical climate of Germany post-World War I. These three photomontages specifically reveal Höch's concerns for female individuality in an environment of gender inequality during this early modern era.

In this essay, two voices are heared, from two women: a certain artist Xena, who talks about her life and its dramas, interwoven with her own experiences from her diaries; and the voice of Maria, who analyzes Xena's life story and her art, diffracted through the prim of the history of 21stC art.  Art the outset, "President of Crimea. Constitution", announces its author as Xena-Maria; but it is not yet clear whether the author is one person or two, nor who they are. Is it Maria who writes here, or Xena, or both? Or are they one and the same person? But at the end of the story, which is told rather in a form of certain legends and fairy tales, Maria and Xena turn into one whole, and meaningfully put an ellipsis after the words "to be continued". This reception was specially intended by the artist Maria Kulikovska, author of this essay, in order to protect both herself and the reader from possible persecutions by migration services and goverment officials of various countries, especially Russia. Also, for her it is an opportunity to step aside and analyze her own life and art form a third person, about which, perhaps, a fictional character from her childhood talks - a sensible step for Maria Kulikovska. The step that her creative language conceptually continues is to replicate casts of her own body and establish them in different spaces and contexts. So she fairly confuses the viewer as to where is the truth, and where is fiction; where is herself, and where is her clone - only now, here, she has applied the same trick in her text. This essay tells a very personal story of the life of a human body, a migrant woman in forced relocation, displacements, alienation and persecutions for her views on life and the conduct of society, and for her moral values expressed throught architecture, sculpture, drawings, performances, actions and public statements. Through the prism of geopolitical upheavals, it tells the artist's own story: How her analysis of own body position and boundaries helped her overcome stigma regarding the body of a woman from Eastern Europe, and how art can save and redeem in an unending inner drama.

Les difficultés d’accès à un logement décent, le coût exorbitant des matériaux de construction dits « nobles » ainsi que l’absence des filières de production foncière et immobilière en RDCONGO ont motivé cette recherche orientée vers l’utilisation des matériaux locaux – et en particulier la terre crue – en vue de contribuer à la résorption des problèmes d’habitat auxquels font face la plupart des populations vivant en zone périurbaine congolaise.

Cette thèse démontre qu’il est possible, à travers l’autoconstruction – procédé utilisé par plus de 80% de ménages congolais pour produire leurs logements – ,d’améliorer l’habitat dans ce pays en partant de la zone périurbaine. On peut donc, à partir des propositions faites dans cet espace idéalement localisé entre les zones urbaine et rurale, envisager des répercutions positives au sein de ces deux zones qui lui sont contiguës.

L’observation constitue la principale méthodologie utilisée.

Des enquêtes menées sur quelques 930 logements situés au sein de trois sous zones climatiques de la RDCONGO ont permis, suivant 29 critères principaux appliqués sur 3 différents paliers (la maison, la parcelle et le quartier) d’engranger plus de 100 000 (cent mille) données reprises dans les annexes à la présente et offrant la possibilité d’extrapoler les résultats obtenus sur l’ensemble du territoire de la RDCONGO.

Inventaire des intelligences et connaissances locales relatives à l’utilisation du matériau terre en construction (Savoirs et Pratiques Populaires « SPP »), espaces engendrés par les architectures de terre en RDCONGO, cartographies des constructions en terre en RDCONGO, maisons périurbaines autoconstruites en adobes, modélisation d’un lotissement de 200 logements réalisables en terre crue, etc. constituent les principaux résultats atteints par cette thèse.

Toutefois, il sied de préciser qu’il s’agit ici, non seulement de construire des maisons en terre, mais surtout de développer un style d’habitat répondant à la fonctionnalité des logements et susceptible de renforcer les dimensions sociales et culturelles tout en respectant l’environnement.

Enfin, des pistes de recherches ultérieures sont envisagées. Elles nécessitent d’être creusées en vue d’autres améliorations des logements de terre crue en climat tropical.

Il s’agit de :l’érosion due au ruissellement sur les murs de terre, l’étude des logements de terre crue en hauteur (R+1, 2, 3, …n ;où n représente le nombre d’étages) pour la RDCONGO, le développement des activités économiques liées aux constructions en terre, la stabilisation organique des sols à l’aide des produits locaux, etc.

The subject of the dissertation is exploring the use of enterprise architecture as a managerial method to support the transformation (reform) of Czech public administration. The dissertation shows that enterprise architecture is in the public sector of Czech Republic still not used, even though public sector organizations want to continue improving its services and management in a way where enterprise architecture could be beneficial. The thesis aims to understand the needs of public authorities towards the possibilities and benefits of enterprise architecture and propose such a customization that could increase the adoption and use of enterprise architecture by these organizations. The main objective of thesis is to summarize individual partial results of author's research into the design of overall Concept of the structure and procedure of implementation of National Public Administration Architecture of Czech Republic. Research within the dissertation combines two basic research methods. Both represent qualitative research methods, suitable for the development of new methods and artefacts (Design Science Research) and for proof the hypotheses and outputs (Case Studies). To create preconditions of the proposed concept was necessary to verify the status of the Czech public administration from the perspective of current rate, needs and interest for the use of enterprise architecture to support the reform of public administration. To verify the status of environment and the needs served basic research questions, further elaborated into detailed questions of multiple case study. In the analytical part of the thesis are summarized significant findings the analysis of information resources and literature in the areas of a) the definition of enterprise architecture, its position, role and development trends for design changes in the structure and metamodel of TOGAF framework, b) the existence of available models and key design principles of application architecture reference model and c) experience of the implementation and use of enterprise architecture for public administration reform. The main part of the thesis focuses on the proposals in three areas. In the first part are designed theoretical and practical changes in the definition, structure and metamodel of enterprise architecture to better support its application for real reform of public administration, not only to improve the management of IT. Presented proposals are in the same time providing solutions to some identified discrepancies in the trends of development of enterprise architecture. General proposals are in parallel applied as changes in the standard TOGAF, which is then recommended as the initial framework for the National Public Administration Architecture of the Czech Republic. In the second part of the proposals are presented principles and content of the reference model of application architecture. This is an example the accelerator necessary to solve the discrepancy between the scope of enterprise architecture and its feasibility with limited resources. The thesis emphasize the industry adjusted model for public administration and its application in a hierarchical, fractal environments typical of public administration. In the third part are presented key components of the overall concept, using as well as previous research results of this thesis. As the key elements are presented proposal for the structure of National Public Administration Architecture of the Czech Republic environment, proposal for the procedure of implementation of National Architecture and the proposal of products (outputs) for deploying National Architecture in Czech Republic. Additionally are formulated proposals of ways of using National Architecture in Czech public administration and conditions and prerequisites for introduction of National Architecture in the Czech public administration.

This project explores two main lines of inquiry concerning representations of ruins in Paris. I first identify a turning point in the evolution of the ruin leitmotif beyond Romanticism in its transfer into a new context: modern Paris. The analysis demonstrates the correlation between this leitmotif and urban environment in transformation, and their influence on aesthetics, leading to the renewal of modes of representation in literary and visual discourse. Unconventional ruins, recently created by demolition during Haussmannisation (1853-70) or war (1870-71) challenge conceptions about space (inside/outside, up/down, visible/invisible), time, and the individual in relation to the city. In view of tracing the transformation of the ruin ethos in relation to modern sensibilities towards the city and its modes of representation, a chronological approach concentrates on two main periods divided into four chapters. The first interval extends from 1848 throughout the Second Empire and the second spans the 1870-1871 conflagration and the Third Republic. An interdisciplinary and dialogic approach reveals the exchanges between different media (literature, journalism, painting, photography) aiming to convey the paradoxes of Paris's modern ruins. Moreover, close reading and comparisons of authors' and artists' depictions across media and genres nuance, correct or disprove critical appraisals, re-establishing artistic authority (e.g. photographers Charles Marville and Bruno Braquehais). The second line of inquiry posits that representations of ruins reflect on the relationship of Parisians with their city during systematisation and wartime destruction. Research reveals that individual initiatives of representing urban ruins attest to a new sensibility towards the city, preceding the Second Empire's (1853-1870) apparatus of historical and topographic documentation to preserve the appearance of spaces before intervention. Thus, during Paris's systematisation, private and artistically-minded projects become the tools of patrimonial preservation. By comparison, aesthetic approaches to ruins in 1871 mark a new appreciation of modern architecture, while engaging with war trauma.

Front de la Guerre froide, les caméras s'en sont emparées. Filmer Berlin, ce n’était pas seulement montrer un territoire urbain précis et délimité, c'était porter à l’écran un espace régi par un contexte historique, social et politique extrêmement prégnant traduisant de fortes spécificités. Deux systèmes de représentation de l’espace urbain ont coexisté dès 1945 nourris d’éléments propres à chaque partie de la ville et de formes esthétiques spécifiques. À partir du 13 août 1961, date de la construction du Mur, la réalité de la division de la ville s'acte dans le béton. Le cinéma s'en est fait le témoin. Ces images, celles de Soi, celles de l’Autre peuvent être envisagées comme des produits de deux sociétés avec leurs symbolismes propres, leurs codes socioculturels et leurs histoires parallèles. Elles sont à ce titre révélatrices de la manière dont a été montré Berlin. From 1961 to 1989, Berlin is a divided city, split by a concrete wall separating the eastern part, capital city of the German Democratic Republic, from the western one, isolated island of the German Federal Republic. Frontline of the Cold War, the cameras captured it.Filming Berlin was not only depicting a precise and bound urban territory, it was bringing to the screen a space ruled by a very significant historical, social and political context conveying strong specificities. Two systems of representation of the urban space coexisted as soon as 1945, fueled by each side of town’s own elements and specific aesthetic forms. From August 13th 1961, the day the Wall was built, the reality of the division of the city is made concrete-solid. Cinema was made the witness of this reality. These pictures, of the Self, of the Other, can be considered as products of both societies, with their own symbolisms, their sociocultural codes and parallel histories. As such, they are indicative of the way Berlin has been shown.Both imageries take part in the construction of a plural urban identity, that sometimes tends towards a shape-shifting hallmark, whose aspects it seems important to question. This PhD in cinematic studies endeavours to describe, analyse and interpret the filmed expressions of this alterity, this singular urban space. O objetivo principal foi verificar a existência de grandes e pequenos empreendedores capitalistas privados na produção da habitação para o trabalhador no período na cidade de São Paulo, entre 1942 e 1964. O problema habitacional é antigo, e em muito se deve ao fato de que o trabalhador não tenha sido integrado plenamente à sociedade. Os mercados formal e informal do trabalho caminharam em paralelo, o mesmo ocorrendo com o mercado formal e informal da habitação. Os principais aspectos conjunturais detectados no período são: a Segunda Guerra Mundial; o debate nacional sobre o tema do desenvolvimento; a dívida externa; a inflação (que afetou fortemente o padrão de consumo do trabalhador, sua capacidade de poupança e, ao mesmo tempo, todo o complexo da indústria da construção); a industrialização e as migrações internas. Na cidade de São Paulo, verificaram-se os fenômenos de verticalização do centro e horizontalização de suas periferias, juntamente com a metropolização. Como metodologia empregada, recorreu-se à bibliografia especializada, e como fontes primárias, optou-se por percorrer as coleções de revistas econômicas e anúncios de jornais. Após 1942, a iniciativa privada, retraiu-se temporariamente do mercado de locação, contudo, não abandonou as opções de investimento habitacionais anteriores, como os cortiços e as vilas operárias. Atuou principalmente em quatro frentes de investimento voltadas para o trabalhador: venda de casas térreas e sobrados; kitchnettes; edifícios em condomínios; e loteamentos periféricos.
The aim of this research was to verify the existence of big and small private capitalist entrepreneurs in the housing production for workers in São Paulo, between 1942 and 1964. The housing problem is old and it is due very much to the fact that the worker never was fully integrated to Brazilian society. The formal and informal labor market developed simultaneously as the same way it occured with the formal and informal housing market. The major historic features in the period were: the Second World War, the debates about the topic of development, external debt, inflation (that affected strongly the consumption pattern of the workers, their capacity to save money, and at the same time the whole building industry complex), the industrialization, and the internal migration. In the city of São Paulo, there was the phenomena of verticalization downtown and horizontalization at the peripheries, along the metropolization process. Specialized bibliography was studied, and as primary sources, we have consulted the collections of economy periodicals and the real state advertisement in the newspapers. After 1942, the private enterprise stopped to invest in the rental market for a short time, however, it did not abandon the prior housing options of investments before, as shantytowns or cortiços and workers´ villages. The private enterprise has acted mainly in four fields of investment with the focus on the workers housing: sale of one or two storey houses; kitchnettes; condominium buildings, and periphery lots.

The entire cultural and social context of the 1930s' Turkey was heavily influenced by the modernization reforms and the official ideologies of the Republican regime. By these reforms, Kemalist regime aimed to transform the whole society and its cultural production. While the existing transformations in the social context was already on their way to Westernization, they were appropriated and accelerated by the Republican modernization reforms. On the other hand, architectural discourse experienced more radical and abrupt transformations when modern architecture was introduced into the architectural culture: Although precedents of modern architecture existed in the pre-Republican period, the official Republican ideology incited the introduction of modern architecture into Turkey. Despite the exceptional importance given to the architectural field, usually it was the foreign architects who got the large scale commissions. This discrimination eventually created a discomfort among Turkish architects. Consequently, Turkish architects who were enthusiastic to produce modern architectural examples had been compelled to operate in the domain of residential architecture. Hence, 1930s' architectural culture experienced the intricate amalgamation formed by the interaction of contradictory ideologies such as dwelling, modernism and nationalism. In addition to the brief analyses made on the Istanbul households and the architectural discourse of the 1930s, the main aim of this study lies in the close formal readings of the residential examples built in Istanbul between the years 1931 and 1940. In this section, I focused on some of the recurrent formal features of these buildings. By analyzing the cultural and ideological significance of these recurrent architectural features, I avoided the architectural examples to determine the framework of my study with their seemingly coherent images. Hence, it became possible to analyze the constitutive gestures of this architectural culture without being influenced by the larger collective images of the buildings. The analyses on the social and symbolic functions of these recurrent features help us to understand the unique characteristics of the architectural culture of the early Republican period.

This research deals with the public housing production financed by the social security after 1930, with a specific range over the performance of the Industrial Reti rement and Pension Institute (IAPI). It deals with this object considering the following aspects: political and economic relationships that conditioned projects and Works; links between the intellectual field and the political project; exchange of ideas national and international in the creation of an own concept of architecture, urbanism and housing; limits and possibilities of the technological development. The engineers´ and the architects´ performance, in the scope of the adherence to the developmental project, are assessed by the interfaces of their theoretical formation, political and administrative vision and their action itself.

Le Comté de Tripoli est le dernier à être fondé des quatre Etats Latins d’Orient issus de la Première Croisade. Ce Comté est le seul à garder sa capitale en possession des croisés jusqu’aux dernières années de l’existence de ces Etats. Ce Comté possède certains des plus anciens châteaux construits par les croisés au début du XIIe siècle tels les châteaux de Tripoli et Gibelet.Cette thèse a plusieurs objectifs, elle vise à préciser les frontières du Comté de Tripoli, énumérer et préciser l’ensemble des places fortes de ce Comté, étudier d’une façon exhaustive les différents sites fortifiés situés sur le territoire de la République Libanaise, et l’élaboration d’une typologie de l’architecture défensive de l’époque des croisades aux XIIe - XIIIe s. dans ce Comté.Grâce aux différentes méthodes de prospection archéologique, l’étude topographique du terrain avec l’archéologie du paysage, il était possible d’identifier et de découvrir plusieurs sites fortifiés, essentiellement des tours, qui n’étaient pas connus auparavant.Un intérêt spécial a été consacré dans notre travail à la lecture approfondie et l’analyse systématique de quelques sites fortifiés majeurs. Cela a permis une meilleure compréhension de l’installation de ces sites, de leur histoire, et de l’évolution de leur construction. Les sites en question sont: Archas, le château de Gibelet, le château de Smar Jbeil, le château Saint-Gilles à Tripoli, la tour Bahani et la tour Mouheich
The County of Tripoli was the last one to be created between the Frenkish States established after the First Crusade. It is the only State that kept its capital city within the power of the Crusades till the last years of the existence of these States. Some of the oldest castles built at the beginning of the XIIth century are located in this County; such as the castles of Tripoli and Gibelet.This PhD has several objectives; it aims to define the frontiers of the County of Tripoli, to list and specify all its strongholds, to study exhaustively the various fortified sites in the territory of the Republic of Lebanon, and to develop a typology of defensive architecture of the Crusades during the XIIth - XIIIth centuries in this county.Through various methods of archaeological survey, study of the topography of the territory with archaeological landscape reading, it was possible to identify and explore several fortified sites, mainly towers not known before. In our work, special interest was devoted on extensive reading and systematic analysis of some major fortified sites. This enabled a better understanding of their installation, their history and the evolution of their construction. The sites are: Archas, Castle of Gibelet, Castle of Smar Jbeil, the castle of St. Gilles in Tripoli, the tower Bahani and the tower Mouheish

International discussions on the conservation of the twentieth-century architectural heritage emphasize the diversity of the whole of the built environment of the entire century, rather than limiting consideration to canonic examples of the architectural historiography during the identification and assessment of the properties to be conserved. In contrast to this international holistic and inclusive approach, the approach to the identification and assessment of the properties in Turkey has in general been selective and exclusive. The early Republican architectural heritage of Turkey is defined through canonical examples drawn from the architectural historiography. On the other hand, more modest, anonymous examples, which constitute the great majority of the built environment of the period, are excluded from conservation status. The main argument of this dissertation is that the current exclusive approach, which selects only some important properties for conservation according to their physical characteristics, is far from understanding the political, institutional and social transformations of the early Republican period, as well as the role of architecture in this transformation. On the basis of this idea, a new assessment approach is proposed in this dissertation which could enable to gain conservation status to the whole diversity of early Republican architecture including more modest examples as well as the canonical ones. Contrary to the current exclusive approach which assesses the end product of a process according to its physical characteristics, the proposed approach is inclusive, taking into consideration the formation and usage processes with all their participating meanings and values and considering these processes along with the final physical form of the building itself. The proposed new approach is tested here on the specific case of the primary school buildings of Izmir, the great majority of which are currently remain out of conservation status due to their rather modest physical qualifications. The dissertation concludes that these buildings are an integral part of the education policies of the early Republican period, of the cultural and social transformations informed by these policies, and of the role of architecture in this process, and that these buildings are the tangible evidences of the meanings and values of this formation process. It then goes on to reveal the necessity of understanding the formation process through extensive research in order to be able to incorporate these meanings and values into the assessment phase.

The Rue Réaumur, cleared and constructed between 1896 and 1900, was the first major urbanism project initiated in central Paris after the dismissal of Haussmann. Realized under the Third Republic and under the guidance of a democratically elected Paris Municipal Council, the street provoked an unprecedented public debate about urbanist priorities, the management of municipal debt, and architectural aesthetics. Disappointed with the visual homogeneity of the Haussmannian boulevard, Councilors liberalized building code and declared a Concours des Façades in the Rue Réaumur in order to visually revitalize their city.

That variation of the streetscape would turn on a monumentalization of the urban party-wall building through enlarged saillies and avant-propos, corbelled façade elements hitherto banned in the streets of Paris. Conceived as a central business district, the Rue Réaumur was also a unique concentration of commercial architecture, which encouraged an expanded use of iron structure to open building interiors and façades into naturally illuminated, floor-through spaces of manufacture. Construction in the Rue Réaumur was, then, guided by contradictory impulses. Charged with psychically countering the uniformity of the rationalized city, the exuberant elevations of the new street simultaneously masked a reordering of the architectural object by similar pressures towards economic and technological efficiency.

This dissertation treats the architecture of the Rue Réaumur and the public debate that shaped it as mutually determining engagements of architectural modernity. It situates the street's evolution as a response to the political, economic, spatial, and psychic challenges posed by the emerging capitalist metropolis. Reconstruction of the architectural and social discourses that informed design practice in the Rue Réaumur positions late-century eclecticism as an indispensable step in the development of interwar Parisian modernism. That architecture served as the primary object of rejection within modernist historiography and avant-garde theory due to its reliance on historical vocabularies. This study demonstrates that the perceptual immediacy desired of the late-century Parisian façade was of equal importance to the development of architectural modernism as theories of structural rationalism. It considers eclecticist architecture like that of the Rue Réaumur as a moment of dynamic invention within nineteenth-century theory and design practice, the terms of which would integrally condition Le Corbusier's reconception of architecture and architectural aesthetics a generation later.

The topic of this thesis is to analyze the websites of selected faculties in the Czech Republic. There are mainly defined general, legal and theoretical elements and methods of websites and the possibility of further examination and analysis in the extensive theoretical parts The practical part evaluates data outputs based on the analysis of individual pages as well as consultation with an expert in the field. The work is based on current trends, production sites and their contemporary design. The first chapter discusses the criterion and selected methods. The next chapter describes the usability and actual testing of university websites. In conclusion, there is a summary of literature and it is stated relative positions of the university websites and design modifications that can be done on websites of the University of Economics in Prague.

El distrito seleccionado será Ancón, ya que combina tres factores importantes que lo convierten en un atractivo destino, no solo turístico, sino también gastronómico. Factores tales como: La gran Herencia cultural con la que cuenta La enorme diversidad de recursos naturales que posee debido a su cercanía al mar Ancón es un balneario por excelencia Todo esto se traduce en un mercado gastronómico con un énfasis arquitectónico de flexibilidad, generando espacios capaces de adaptarse a lo largo del tiempo. Este proyecto cuenta con un terreno triangular con tres frentes, que compartirá la manzana con una edificación a mantener que es el Cuerpo de bomberos. Constará de tres niveles, siendo una volumetría permeable desarrollada alrededor de un patio central. El primer nivel constará de un pequeño mercado gourmet. Un segundo nivel con restaurantes con vista al club de la FAP y un tercer nivel totalmente abierto convirtiéndose en una terraza gastronómica. Un criterio importante en el proceso de diseño será la historia arquitectónica de la zona, donde prevalece la arquitectura republicana, de las cuales se tomarán elementos específicos que sean propios de la época, tales como el uso de teatinas.
This project arises from the need to reactivate the gastronomic boom that has been lost, where one of the main factors is the lack of investment, reflecting the need for projects that promote gastronomy. The selected district will be Ancon, since it combines three important factors that make it an attractive destination, not only for tourism, but also for gastronomy. Factors such as: 1.The great cultural heritage it has 2.The diversity of natural resources it possesses due to its proximity to the sea 3.Ancon is a beach by excellence All this translates into a gastronomic market with an architectural emphasis on flexibility, generating spaces capable of adapting over time. This project has a triangular terrain with three fronts, which will share the block with a building to be maintained that is the Fire Department. It will consist of three levels, with a permeable volumetry developed around a central courtyard. The first level will consist of a small gourmet market. A second level with restaurants overlooking the FAP club and a third level totally open becoming a gastronomic terrace. An important criterion in the design process will be the architectural history of the area, where Republican architecture prevails, from which specific elements will be taken that are typical of the time, such as the use of «Teatinas»

"Cette étude comparative cherche à mettre en valeur le rôle qu'ont joué les édifices publics des capitales de l'Empire allemand (Berlin) et de la Troisième République française (Paris) depuis la genèse de ces deux régimes jusqu'à la fin de la première Guerre mondiale (1871-1918), dans la mesure où l'espace symbolique qu'est la capitale peut être considéré, dans ces deux cas, comme un " précipité de Pierre " de la communauté nationale et comme un prolongement de ses " projets identitaires ". L'histoire politique est actuellement de plus en plus consacrée à l'étude de la construction des identités collectives et de leur symbolisation. La grille d'analyse que je propose dans ma thèse se situe donc au confluent de cette histoire politique et de l'histoire de l'architecture, proche de la perspective adoptée par l'iconologie politique. Jusqu'à présent, ce courant a produit relativement peu d'études comparatives, surtout en ce qui concerne l'architecture publique du XIXe siècle sur les abords de la Spree et de la Seine. Our study tries to examine the role of public buildings in the capitals of the German Empire (Berlin) and the third French Republic (Paris) from 1871 to 1918. The urban space is therefore being considered as a crystallization of the national community and its construction of identity. Political history has since some time focussed on the study of collective identity and its symbolization. The approach we have adopted for our study is a crossing of this current of political history and of a more classical kind of history of architecture. It could be called political iconology of architecture in Paris and Berlin. Our study which tries to close this gap hopes to find its readers in both countries. It treats the following building types: Basilique of the Holy Heart, parliamentary assemblies, government and post offices, town halls, museums, churches and Synagogues
