Streszczenie:
In this paper, we consider the choice of remanufacturing strategy of a monopolist original equipment manufacturer under the cap-and-trade regulation in the presence of the assimilation effect. We model the manufacturer’s optimal decision-makings and associated profits under three different remanufacturing strategies. Our results indicate that the assimilation effect reduces the manufacturer’s motivation to become engaged in remanufacturing. Specifically, there exists a threshold for the intensity of the assimilation effect for the manufacturer to enter remanufacturing. First, when the assimilation effect is below the threshold, the manufacturer should choose to remanufacture. Otherwise, the manufacturer should only produce new products. Second, the value of the threshold for the assimilation effect is further determined by the remanufacturing’s emission advantage and the carbon trading price. In addition, when the intensity of the assimilation effect is high enough, the carbon trading price and carbon emission advantage no longer impacts the remanufacturing strategy. Lastly, our numerical examples reveal that ignoring the assimilation effect can lead to up to 56.2% loss of potential profit for the manufacturer.

Due to the need for resource utilization and environmental protection, remanufacturing is used as an effective means to achieve a circular economy. To focus on the production and sales of new products, manufacturers outsource the remanufacturing of used products to remanufacturers. Aiming at helping manufacturers to choose between self-remanufacturing and outsourcing remanufacturing policies, a closed-loop supply chain network equilibrium model considering the remanufacturing policy options is established. The equilibrium decision-making is obtained by using the variational inequality method. Furthermore, the criteria for manufacturers to choose between the two remanufacturing policies based on different factors such as recovery rates of the used products, remanufacturing costs, and environmental impact parameters, are given. Numerical examples show the following results: (1) When compared with self-remanufacturing policy, outsourcing remanufacturing policy can save resources, increase the sales of products, and have a smaller environmental impact. (2) When the recycling rate of used products is low, choosing an outsourcing remanufacturing policy can increase the sales of products. When the recycling rate is high, choosing a self-remanufacturing policy can get more profits. (3) When the costs of a self-remanufacturing policy and an outsource-remanufacturing policy are quite different, choosing the outsourcing remanufacturing policy can save resources and protect the environment.

Purpose Remanufacturing is the only end-of-life (EOL) treatment process that results in as-new functional and aesthetic quality and warranty. However, applying mental model theory, the purpose of this paper is to argue that the conception of remanufacturing as an EOL process activates an operational mental model (OMM) that connects to resource reuse, environmental concern and cost savings and is thus opposed to a strategic mental model (SMM) that associates remanufacturing with quality improvements and potential price increases. Design/methodology/approach The authors support the argument by empirically assessing consumers’ multi-attribute decision process for cars with remanufactured or new engines among 202 car buyers in China. The authors conduct a conjoint analysis and use the results as input to simulate market shares for various markets on which these cars compete. Findings The results suggest that consumers on average attribute reduced utility to remanufactured engines, thus in line with the OMM. However, the authors identify a segment accounting for about 30 per cent of the market with preference for remanufactured engines. The fact that this segment has reduced environmental concern supports the SMM idea that remanufactured products can be bought for their quality. Research limitations/implications A single-country (China) single-brand (Volkswagen) study is used to support the conceptualised mental models. While this strengthens the internal validity of the results, future research could improve the external validity by using more representative sampling in a wider array of empirical contexts. Moreover, future work could test the theory more explicitly. Practical implications By selling cars with remanufactured engines to customers with a SMM that values the at least equal performance of remanufactured products, firms can enhance their profit from remanufactured products. In addition, promoting SMM enables sustainable business models for the sharing economy. Originality/value As a community, the authors need to more effectively reflect on shaping mental models that disconnect remanufacturing from analogies that convey inferior quality and performance associations. Firms can overcome reduced utility perceptions not only by providing discounts, i.e. sharing the economic benefits of remanufacturing, but even more by increasing the warranty, thus sharing remanufacturing’s performance benefit and reducing consumers’ risk, a mechanism widely acknowledged in product diffusion but neglected in remanufacturing so far.

Remanufacturing scheme design (RSD) is an essential step in the restoration and upgrading of used products. However, the quantity of remanufactured products is growing rapidly, and customers have personalized demands for remanufactured products that lead to shorter design cycles. In addition, the used products are scrapped due to their own defects, such as performance failure and functional degradation, which correspond to the inherent remanufacturing demand (IRD) of used products. Faced with large quantities of used products, how to quickly develop reasonable remanufacturing schemes for satisfying customers’ individual demands and the IRD is an urgent problem to be solved. To address these issues, a mass customization-based RSD method is proposed. First, remanufacturing demand comprising customer demand and the IRD is analyzed to determine the RSD targets and remanufacturing types. Then, the RSD methods are intelligently selected based on the remanufacturing types, which include restorative remanufacturing, upgrade remanufacturing and hybrid remanufacturing, while the hybrid contains restorative remanufacturing and upgrade remanufacturing. Moreover, the restorative remanufacturing scheme is generated to satisfy the restorative remanufacturing targets based on reverse engineering (RE) and the tool contact point path section line (TCPPSL) method. After used products are restored, case-based reasoning (CBR) is used to retrieve the case that best matches the upgrade remanufacturing targets, while the grey relational analysis (GRA) algorithm is applied to calculate the similarity between cases. Finally, the feasibility of this method is verified by considering the RSD of a used lathe. The results indicated that the proposed approach can rapidly help designers to obtain remanufacturing solutions for satisfying the customer demand and IRD.

Remanufacturing is one of the main practices toward a circular economy and industrial sustainability. Remanufacturing is highly dependent on how circular products are designed and developed. Remanufacturing can also benefit from automation for efficiency, accuracy and flexibility. This paper, via a multiple case study, connects the three areas of remanufacturing, product design and automation and investigates how circular product design can facilitate automation remanufacturing processes. First, circular product design guidelines are discussed with regard to remanufacturing. Second, potential areas for automation at three remanufacturers of electric and electronic equipment are pinpointed. Finally, design guidelines are connected to the identified potential automation areas in each remanufacturing process and discussed together. According to our results, the main incentives for automating remanufacturing processes are mainly related to the work environment, efficiency and quality. In addition, several design guidelines can facilitate automated remanufacturing processes; for instance, the standardization of components, fasteners and remanufacturing tools across different models and brands can also facilitate automated remanufacturing, where products can easily and nondestructively be disassembled by a robot or a machine.

The automotive remanufacturing industry is the largest remanufacturing sector, accounting for around two-thirds of global remanufacturing activities. Engine parts are a common target for remanufacturing due to their high value and demand. With the introduction of the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 in Malaysia, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are progressively taking part in the remanufacturing industry, especially engine remanufacturing. However, since the remanufacturing process is more complex than the primary production of the same products, challenges partaking in the operations and processes of remanufacturing are common in the industries, especially for independent remanufacturers. There still lacks data that shows the process flows of these engine-remanufactured products being conducted locally. In this study, a qualitative interview has been conducted through focus group discussion (FGD) with the SMEs to determine the processes and practices for automotive remanufacturing, thereby identifying key components of engine remanufacturing. Four different category questions, accompanied by several sub-questions to determine the processes and methods in their aspects of automotive remanufacturing, have been asked. The findings show that engine remanufacturing is a series of intricate processes being done carefully and extensively, from the cleaning process to the final assembly testing for which varies heavily depending on the components and industries. While the remanufacturing processes across the independent remanufacturers are almost the same, findings also suggest there exist additional processes that can be applied to increase the lifespan of the products, such as additive remanufacturing techniques, that these independent remanufacturers know but do not apply to their processes due to the cost and economics of the business. Further research exploring case studies of these independent remanufacturers is recommended to ensure a more holistic and critical aspects of engine remanufacturing to be captured.

Under a random market environment, we assumed that the remanufacturing operation was outsourced and both the manufacturing process and remanufacturing process had capacity constraints. By analyzing the relations between manufacturing/remanufacturing production batch sizes and inventory level, we established a multi-period capacitated manufacturing/remanufacturing hybrid decision-making model. A heuristic genetic algorithm was designed and a numerical example demonstrated the validity of the model and the algorithm. We conclude that the manufacturing/remanufacturing quantities decision is affected by both market parameters and capacity limitations. The design for the remanufacturing process (DFRP) is a key part of remanufacturing, which directly affects the cost, performance, and carbon emission of used product remanufacturing. However, used parts have various failure forms and defects, which make it hard to rapidly generate the remanufacturing process scheme for simultaneously satisfying remanufacturing requirements regarding cost, performance, and carbon emissions. This causes remanufactured products to lose their energy-saving and emission-reduction benefits. To this end, this paper proposes an integrated design method for the used product remanufacturing process based on the multi-objective optimization model. Firstly, an integrated DFRP framework is constructed, including design information acquisition, the virtual model construction of DFRP solutions, and the multi-objective optimization of the remanufacturing process scheme. Then, the design matrix, sensitivity analysis, and least squares are applied to construct the mapping models between performance, carbon emissions, cost, and remanufacturing process parameters. Meanwhile, a DFRP multi-objective optimization model with performance, carbon emission, and cost as the design objectives is established, and a teaching–learning based adaptive optimization algorithm is employed to solve the optimization model to acquire a DFRP solution satisfying the target information. Finally, the feasibility of the method is verified by the DFRP of the turbine blade as an example. The results show that the optimized remanufacturing process parameters reduce carbon emissions by 11.7% and remanufacturing cost by USD 0.052 compared with the original process parameters, and also improve the tensile strength of the turbine blades, which also indicates that the DFPR method can effectively achieve energy saving and emission reduction and ensure the performance of the remanufactured products. This can greatly reduce the carbon emission credits of the large-scale remanufacturing industry and promote the global industry’s sustainable development; meanwhile, this study is useful for remanufacturing companies and provides remanufacturing process design methodology support.

We consider that a supply chain consists of an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and a retailer. We analyze how the retailer’s remanufacturing decision affects the decision of the new products’ qualities for the OEM. We use a game theory approach to investigate the interactions between the OEM and the retailer with or without remanufacturing operation. We find the retailer’s motivation to develop the remanufacturing industry depends on the profitability of remanufactured products and the OEM’s deterring strategy. When the remanufacturing operation profit margin is low, the retailer voluntarily gives up remanufacturing; when this profit margin is moderate, the OEM induces the retailer to give up remanufacturing by improving the quality of the new product; when this profit margin is sufficiently high, the OEM cannot prevent the retailer from developing remanufacturing. The retailer developing remanufacturing as well as their threat of developing decrease the OEM’s profit because the OEM improves the quality of the new products to induce the retailer to give up remanufacturing, at the expense of its own profit. We explicitly characterize the process of the OEM from preventing to accepting the retailer developing the remanufacturing industry, as well as the changes in supply-chain members’ operating decisions and profits in the process. Finally, using MATLAB numerical analysis, we also found that the retailer’s development of the remanufacturing industry always benefits the whole supply chain, consumer surplus, and social welfare. Furthermore, the retailer’s development of the remanufacturing industry is not always good for the environment. This development is only good for the environment when the new products’ environmental impacts in the EOL stage are larger than the total environmental impacts of the remanufactured products in every stage of their life cycle.

Abstract: With sustainable industrial development, Remanufacturing has gained immense popularity. Attempts are made to rebuild new products while maintaining the quality equivalent to that of newly manufactured products. The need to study and apply the concept of Remanufacturing on a large scale arises due to the limited availability of resources on the planet Earth. Remanufacturing is a process of restoring a non-functional, discarded, or traded-in product like-new condition. It results in 68- 83% reduced energy, material use, and production costs. Environmentally, remanufacturing facilitates a decrease in 73-87% fewer carbon dioxide emissions. Remanufacturing has become a critical element of the circular economy wherein products are developed, manufactured, used, and recovered to prevent any sort of waste and reduce the extraction of raw materials. Despite successful growth in Remanufacturing industry, it continues to face numerous challenges but holds the potential to become a multi-billion-dollar industry. The paper discusses the process of Remanufacturing, its design aspects, and the environmental impact. It also provides case studies for explaining the Remanufacturing of Engines.

The operating environment and using conditions of mechanical products are complex and diverse, which has caused a large number of mechanical products to be unable to be remanufactured or have low-remanufacturability. Such products are often ignored by remanufacturing companies and society, which aggravates environmental pollution and waste of resources. Therefore, this article provides a decision-making model for two strategies of complete machine remanufacturing (CMR) and part remanufacturing (PR) for used products with low-remanufacturability. Firstly, from the perspective of the remanufacturing process under the existing technical conditions, the economic, environmental, and social benefits of different remanufacturing solutions are analyzed. Secondly, the entropy method is used to weigh the economic, environmental, and social benefits to reduce the model error, and the linear regression method is used to find the comprehensive benefits of its different remanufacturing strategies. Finally, through the decision-making research on the remanufacturing strategies of the used machine tool CA6180, the results show that the tested machine tool should choose the remanufacturing strategy of PR and put it on the market. Moreover, the decision-making strategy proposed in this paper helps to realize a resource-saving and environment-friendly manufacturing ecology and provides a new perspective for remanufacturing research.

To solve the problem of global warming and resources crisis, we adopt two remanufacturing strategies, denoted ‘In-House Remanufacturing Strategy’ and ‘Outsourcing Remanufacturing Strategy,’ respectively, for recycling and reusing waste products. However, to study the optimal remanufacturing strategy of a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) network under government regulations and the manufacturer’s design for the environment, we use variational inequality to construct a CLSC network equilibrium model based on these two strategies. By using a comparative analysis of the decision-makers’ profits, carbon emissions, and carbon taxes, we show how the decision-makers should choose the optimal remanufacturing strategies under different government regulations and the manufacturer’s levels of design for the environment. The findings of the study show that the manufacturer’s design for the environment is conducive to resource recovery and promotes the development of remanufacturing activities. When manufacturers’ levels of design for the environment are high, although manufacturers will adopt the outsourcing remanufacturing strategy to obtain high profits, they will lose environmental benefits. The findings also show that the new product handling fee policy in government regulations can promote energy conservation and emission reduction, and the reproduction subsidy policy can encourage product remanufacturing. Moreover, when the government’s subsidy for remanufactured products increases to a threshold, it will prompt manufacturers to adopt the outsourcing remanufacturing strategy; and the remanufacturing subsidy threshold is negatively correlated with the manufacturer’s levels of design for the environment.

The primal purpose of this paper is twofold: to ascertain the facts for product design for remanufacturing and to quantitative assess the product design method. This first requires an analysis of product design that facilitates remanufacture. Insights on how to design products for ease of remanufacture were obtained from lots of details of the whole remanufacture process. Furthermore, comparing design for remanufacturing to classic design-for-x indicated that they have some similarities and conflicts. And a further assessment model and method based on the remanufacturing process were put forward, which comprehensive quantitative assess product design for remanufacturing. Finally, we conclude that it is important that the design requirements explicitly address remanufacturing process, and the evaluation model have enough potential to justify products design for remanufacturing.

Active remanufacturing is an important technique that is used to reduce the uncertainty of the quality of remanufactured cores. However, the implementation of active remanufacturing too early or late will lead to a reduction in economic benefits and an increase in environmental impact during the whole life cycle of the product. To this end, an active-remanufacturing-timing decision method is proposed based on an economic, energy and environmental (3E) analysis of product life cycle. In this method, the quantitative function of the cost, energy consumption and environmental emissions of used products in the manufacturing stage, service stage, and remanufacturing stage are firstly constructed based on life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle cost (LCC). Then, a multi-objective optimization method and the particle swarm algorithm are utilized to obtain active-remanufacturing timing with the optimal economic and environmental benefits of remanufacturing. Finally, a case study on remanufacturing on used engines is demonstrated to validate the proposed method.

As an important energy conversion mechanism, centrifugal compressors play an important role in the national economy. The blade is one of the most critical components of the compressor. Damaged blades contain extremely high added value for remanufacturing. Thus, remanufacturing research on damaged and retired impeller/blade is getting more and more attention. Laser additive and milling subtractive composite remanufacturing technology is an effective means to achieve metal parts remanufacturing. In this paper, an advanced methodology for the remanufacturing of complex geometry and expensive components via reverse engineering, free-form surface modeling, laser additive repaired and machining is presented. The approach involves the integration of 3D non-contact digitization to obtain the point cloud data of damaged parts, adaptive free-form surface reconstruction to get the digital model of damage location, and laser additive manufacturing process containing slicing and path planning and subsequent multi-axis milling operation. The methodology has been successfully implemented on thin-curved centrifugal compressor blades. The results have shown that the composite remanufacturing method is an effective solution to realize the remanufacturing of damaged blades, and can be applied to the remanufacturing of other complicated parts.

Remanufacturing is a viable option to extend the useful life of an end-of-use product or its parts, ensuring sustainable competitive advantages under the current global economic climate. Challenges typical to remanufacturing still persist, despite its many benefits. According to the European Remanufacturing Network, a key challenge is the lack of accurate, timely and consistent product knowledge as highlighted in a 2015 survey of 188 European remanufacturers. With more data being produced by electric and hybrid vehicles, this adds to the information complexity challenge already experienced in remanufacturing. Therefore, it is difficult to implement real-time and accurate remanufacturing for the shop floor; there are no papers that focus on this within an electric and hybrid vehicle environment. To address this problem, this paper attempts to: (1) identify the required parameters/variables needed for fuel cell remanufacturing by means of interviews; (2) rank the variables by Pareto analysis; (3) develop a casual loop diagram for the identified parameters/variables to visualise their impact on remanufacturing; and (4) model a simple stock and flow diagram to simulate and understand data and information-driven schemes in remanufacturing.

Facing a growing amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), a recent recast of the WEEE directive has put a specific reuse target for manufacturers, aiming to reduce environmental pollution and incentivize a green product design. In this paper, in order to examine whether the above two goals can be achieved by setting a specific reuse target, we have modelled a closed-loop supply chain consisting of a supplier (the leader) and a manufacturer (the follower) with the constraint of a mandated remanufacturing target. In this model, the supplier determines the level of interchangeability in product design and the wholesale price of the key component. The manufacturer buys the key components from the supplier and makes production and remanufacturing decisions under the requirement of a mandated remanufacturing target. We have investigated the supply chain’s members’ optimal decisions and analyzed the impact of the mandated remanufacturing target on the optimal profits of the supply chain’s members and consumer surplus, and finally, we have explored the environmental implications of the mandated remanufacturing target. We found that the supply chain’s members’ optimal decisions are affected by the mandated remanufacturing target and the cost of the new component. In terms of the economic implications of the mandated remanufacturing target, we have demonstrated that the increase in the mandated remanufacturing target has negative effects on the profits of the supply chain’s members and consumer surplus. Regarding the goal of incentivizing green product design, we found that the mandated remanufacturing target cannot always incentivize the supplier to implement product design that is beneficial to remanufacturing. From the perspective of the environment, we further indicate that more stringent mandated remanufacturing targets may bring an undesirable environmental outcome.

Remanufacturing is a sustainable product reutilization strategy to realize responsible consumption and production. However, remanufacturing practice can be subject to deficient consumer perception, production capacity constraint, uncertain demand and government intervention. This paper considers outsourced remanufacturing mode to establish and investigate a remanufacturing supply chain (RSC) network consisting of multiple manufacturers, retailers and remanufacturers. Optimality conditions with RSC network members are derived utilizing variation inequality. Numerical examples based on data accumulated from a remanufacturing enterprise and questionnaire survey on consumer perception for remanufactured products, are presented to put the proposed model into practice. Influences of product heterogeneity (new and remanufactured products), consumer preference, production capacity constraint, product price competitiveness, market demand fluctuation, and government financial measures on RSC network production and pricing strategies are investigated through numerical analyses. Analytical results indicate that pricing for the remanufactured product would be equivalent to that of the new product when consumers value the remanufactured product at a relatively high level, however an excessive penchant for the remanufactured product is less profitable especially from the perspective of the remanufacturer. In general, an upper-middle level of consumer preference for the remanufactured product is the most favourable scenario. When remanufacturing industry is just emerging, a high tax will be imposed on the manufacturer to accumulate remanufacturing subsidy for the government to achieve its balanced budget. As the remanufacturing industry develops and consumer environmental awareness enhances, it is especially essential for the government to establish a levy-subsidy mechanism to maintain sustainable progress of the industry. Combining main conclusions with the background of Chinese remanufacturing industry, managerial implications are provided from respective perspectives of enterprises’ remanufacturing operation, government financial regulation, and consumer awareness enhancement. The analyses and results are especially relevant as a reference for remanufacturing decision-makings as well as government financial regulations, thus enhancing production sustainability as well as environmental benefits.

Company interest and research in the circular economy and remanufacturing have increased as a means of reducing negative environmental impacts. Remanufacturing is an industrial process whereby used products are returned to a state of like-new. However, few products are designed for remanufacturing, and further research and industrial efforts are needed to facilitate more widespread use of design for remanufacturing. One crucial factor facilitating design for remanufacturing is the integration of feedback in the product design process. Thus, the objective of this paper is to analyse feedback flows from remanufacturing to product design. Hence, a literature study and multiple case studies were conducted at three companies that design, manufacture and remanufacture different kinds of products. The cross-case analysis revealed the five barriers of the lack of internal awareness, lack of knowledge, lack of incentives, lack of feedback channels and non-supportive organisational structures, and the five enablers of business opportunities, integrated design processes, customers’ demand, laws, regulations and standards, and new technologies. To establish improved feedback from remanufacturing to product design, the barriers need to be addressed and the enablers explored. Thus, improved feedback from remanufacturing to product design will improve the design of future products suited for a more circular economy.

Although many studies have recently investigated how the product quality impacts on economic and environment performance under remanufacturing, all of them assume that remanufacturing operations are undertaken by the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) or independent remanufacturers (IRs). However, many OEMs such as Lexmark, Canon, and Epson filed lawsuits with those IRs without licensing, but outsourced the remanufacturing operations to several contracted remanufacturers (CRs). We therefore extend the prior research to investigate the economic and environmental implications of OEMs’ strategic desired quality level choices under remanufacturing outsourcing. That is, we develop two models corresponding to two scenarios where OEMs (1) undertake remanufacturing in-house or (2) outsource it to a CR. Our results show that, to create a less intense cannibalization problem for new products sales, OEMs would be likely to choose a lower product quality when outsourcing remanufacturing to a CR. More importantly, from the economic perspective, we find that outsourcing remanufacturing to a CR hurts the OEM and the industry. However, from the environmental angle, our results reveal that there is a ratio threshold for environmental impact for different life cycle phases, above which remanufacturing in-house is definitely beneficial for OEM in economics and environment, but for the rest, outsourcing is equally or more environmental-friendly, despite cutting down the profit.

Abstract- Due to the environmental regulations and economic viability, many industries show growing interest in the product recovery. Product recovery strategies (sometimes called end-of-life (EoL)) are recycling, remanufacturing, reuse, and refurbishment of components. Remanufacturing is a process that brings end-of-life product to its “like-new” conditions, the process recover product functions and quality, the remanufactured product is as its equivalent new with same warranty and less purchasing price. The price difference is associated with saving in energy, material and other resources recovered from the EoL product. The air-conditioning is the most energy consuming sector in Saudi Arabia (the geographical location of the study) where it consume 60-70% of the total residential energy. This study provide initial investigation and assessment of Business models for remanufacturing of window air-conditioner., a survey regarding the customer behavior has been conducted, it assesses how users deal with EoL Air-Conditioner, it also measures their perceptions about the remanufacturing process. Remanufacturing is deemed to be effective in reducing WEEE. Existing studies on remanufacturing mostly focus on operational issues, product acquisition, and pricing. However, some doubts about remanufacturing business arise in developing countries, where there is less regulation on remanufacturing and less environmental awareness. This study aims to investigate the prospects of remanufacturing business from the retailers' perspectives through in-depth interviews on three retailers in Surabaya, Indonesia. The main drivers for mobile phone remanufacturing business are its affordable and competitive price, big demand for popular mobile phones and high-end mobile phone, the opportunity for specification upgrade, and its suitability with the needs of Indonesian people. The main barriers for remanufacturing business are the possibility for cannibalizing new mobile phones' market share, the uncertainty of core supply, discontinuity of replacement part supply, lack of product knowledge among consumers and retailers, hesitation of retailers to sell remanufactured products, and lack of strict and clear regulations about remanufacturing business. Findings of this study provide insights to prospective mobile phone remanufacturers of what needs to be tackled to start a prosperous business. On the theoretical side, it provides complementary knowledge to existing studies that have been conducted mostly on countries that have higher environmental awareness.

Remanufacturing is considered as the most preferable recovery option. The objective of this paper was to identify the environmental inventory of a remanufacturing initiative. A window-mount air conditioner (AC) was selected as a case study to verify the environmental benefits of remanufacturing a product characterized by high energy consumption during its life cycle phases. A life cycle approach was followed. The research aims to provide a reference case in the remanufacturing of products characterized by energy intensive use, of which an AC is one of them. The assessment was conducted with the guidance of the ISO 14044-2006 life cycle assessment (LCA). The significance of this study lies in the fact that it provides an authentic example wherein the environmental inventory of the remanufacturing process is identified and documented. It can be used in further studies to compare the environmental burden of remanufacturing processes to the process of manufacturing a new AC. The developed life cycle analysis can be utilized to help AC manufacturers make decisions about the overall environmental performance of their products if it goes through the remanufacturing cycle.

In recent times, sustainability has become more important for businesses. Accordingly, product remanufacturing has emerged as an interesting topic, as it is generally considered as a profitable and environmentally friendly end-of-use management option for several products. While extant literature on remanufacturing has comprehensively studied the topic of outsourcing, it has failed to recognize that retailers also have the flexibility to engage in remanufacturing. However, in recent years, several brand name retailers have established remanufacturing operations. The following question arises: Should original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) outsource their remanufacturing operations to their retailers? To answer this question, two models are developed in which an OEM interacts with an independent retailer on remanufacturing operations with the option to either remanufacture all products in-house (Model M) or outsource remanufacturing to their retailer (Model R). The result shows that although model M potentially facilitates greater economic, social, and environmental sustainability, it has costs for the retailer. Finally, a revenue-sharing contract is proposed to achieve a “win-win-win” outcome that has economic, social, and environmental benefits for all parties.

Streszczenie:
In order to cope with the issue of depletion of natural resources, expectations for economical designs of the closed-loop supply chains of products that include remanufacturing in their lifecycle have recently significantly grown. However, since disassembly of a product to remanufacture it is costly due to high labor costs, the lifecycle option of remanufacturing an end of life product by disassembly and reassembly needs to be established environmentally as well as economically. In this study, we propose a remanufacturing option selection method that takes recovery rates and profits into account. First, a bill of materials of a product is prepared to create data for remanufacturing. Next, its remanufacturing option selection is formulated by using the 0-1 integer programming. Lastly, the proposed remanufacturing option selection method is verified by analyzing the sensitivities of the recovery rates and selling prices of the remanufactured products using the ϵ constraint method. The proposed method that takes remanufacturing into account has demonstrated a generating larger profits than a conventional method maintaining high recovery rates at the same levels in a case study.

Streszczenie:
To develop more competitive strategies for different types of remanufacturing companies under the trade-in remanufacturing policy, this paper investigates the impact of the trade-in remanufacturing policy and consumer choice behavior on decisions of a traditional brand remanufacturer and a third-party brand remanufacturer by using a consumer utility model. The results suggest that the trade-in remanufacturing policy increases demand for the third-party brand, but does not increase demand for the traditional brand. Further, although trade-in remanufacturing policy increases both brand prices, it also increases consumer surplus and corporate profits. Neither the traditional brand remanufacturer nor the third-party brand remanufacturer can completely monopolize the remanufacturing market. In this situation, the traditional brand remanufacturer should strive to increase consumer loyalty, and the third-party brand remanufacturer should strive for consumer recognition of third-party remanufactured products.
