In this work, I analyse the role of judiciary in the process of censorship in India. Focusing on the subject of “Religious offense and censorship of publications,” I examine the rationales and justifications given by courts to restrict freedom of speech and expression. I argue that the issues like public order, and the concern to protect religious sentimentalities of different communities from hurt in a secular democracy, form the bedrock on which the courts construct the legal justification for curtailment of right to freedom of expression. In the process, the courts define the “reasonability” of restrictions, as advocated under article 19(2) of the constitution, very expansively, thereby allowing wide latitude for state intervention in the free exercise of this fundamental right. In a way, the position of the courts reflect a sense of legal patronage for state action against misuse of freedom of speech and expression, and it also exhibits a form of legal paternalism where the courts educates the citizens regarding the permissible limits of “matter” and “manner” of speech acts. I further argue that this attitude of the courts, along with the ambiguity attached with the nature of statutory laws, and the structural and procedural limitations of the legal process creates a “web of censorship” that fails to provide the legal protection required for the free exercise of the right to freedom of speech and expression. However, despite these limitations, and increasing intervention of non-state actors in the process of censorship, the role of courts cannot be undermined. As the constitutional authority to interpret and define the scope of freedom of speech and expression, they continue to play a dominant role in the politics of censorship in Indian context.

Nineteenth-century periodical literature, recognised today as a distinctive and significant feature of Victorian public communication, is voluminous. Yet in order to argue that the editor-publisher Elizabeth Hayes made a significant contribution to evangelising journalism, this thesis finds it imperative to situate her work within the enormous outpourings of the Victorian periodical press. For a Victorian woman to succeed in journalism was impressive and this investigation argues that Hayes capably led an international journal of religious ideas to stability and longevity. The investigation will show that Hayes, foundress of an organisation which edited, published and distributed a Franciscan monthly journal - to date scarcely investigated- was prepared prior to 1872 for her subsequent journalistic mission. The argument that Hayes made a significant contribution to nineteenth-century Catholic journalism appears strongest when evidence of the immense power of the press for good and evil is provided. This is accomplished hopefully though an examination of both secular and religious periodical literature and in particular by situating Hayes’ output within this milieu. The argument is further strengthened through a detailed examination of the actual contents of Hayes’ Annals of Our Lady of the Angels, of the numerous contributions to her Annals and of the editing, publishing and distribution methods which she employed in her mission. The argument shows Hayes’ publication to be a significant contribution in the literary field to a growing body of research on late nineteenth-century professional women who enriched society with religious periodicals. The thesis argues that Hayes provided matter of interest to general readers and presented the progress and development of the Franciscan Order. The journal’s range of themes adds weight to the growing body of evidence of how women’s topics varied in the Victorian religious periodical press. It is argued that Hayes’ diffusion of good literature was an authentic medium of evangelisation over twenty-one years. As writer, editor, publisher, manager of printing and distribution, it is argued that Hayes was a significant contributor to the Apostolate of the Press and that she used her journal as a tool of both adult education and entertainment. L’essor remarquable dans le champ religieux contemporain de toutes sortes de formes de « religiosités populaires » au sein ou en marge des institutions religieuses établies peut apparaître comme un paradoxe en ce début de troisième millénaire. Ainsi, s’agissant du christianisme, il est établi que tout au long de son histoire la question des croyances et pratiques religieuses dites populaires a souvent été perçue comme relevant du domaine des survivances du paganisme que l’Eglise se devait de combattre. Sur le terrain du catholicisme en Afrique, la question des « religiosités populaires » est également d’actualité et ce, dans le contexte d’une effervescence religieuse généralisée qui, tout en se nourrissant des ressources qu’offre la tradition chrétienne, puise également dans le vivier de la religion et de la culture traditionnelles. Ce phénomène se présente comme une nouvelle manière de pratiquer la religion et de vivre la foi chrétienne qui interpelle la science théologique et la responsabilité pastorale de l’Eglise. Par son caractère exponentiel et sa forte dimension anthropologique et théologique, la problématique des « religiosités populaires » devient une donne socio-religieuse incontournable qui ne saurait laisser indifférent quiconque s’intéresse au présent et à l’avenir de la jeune et dynamique chrétienté africaine The remarkable growth in the contemporary religious field all sorts of forms of "popular religiosity" within or outside established religious institutions may seem a paradox in this third millennium. Thus, in the case of Christianity, it is established that throughout its history the question of religious beliefs and practices popular saying has often been perceived as the domain of the survivals of paganism that the institution had to fight. Field of Catholicism in Africa, the question of "popular religiosity" is also an issue and this, in the context of a widespread religious ferment, while feeding on the resources offered by the Christian tradition also draws the pool of religion and traditional culture. This phenomenon presents itself as a new way to worship and live the Christian faith that challenges the theological and pastoral responsibility of the Church. By its exponential character and his strong theological and anthropological dimension, the problem of "popular religiosity" became a religious and social condition which must not remain indifferent to anyone interested in the present and the future of the young and dynamic African Christianity

Pour les chrétiens, le couple est né de l’Amour et du Désir de Dieu. Aujourd’hui, ne vit-il pas un malaise au sein de l’Eglise ? C’est notre Recherche-Action en Théologie Pratique. La première partie est descriptive. Devant une «situation-problème», interrogeons le réel. La parole est donnée aux couples chrétiens mariés. Qu’on entende ceux qu’on n’entend pas d’habitude dans l’Eglise. La problématique : il y a bien un malaise entre ces couples et leur Eglise. Ils disent ne pas y avoir de reconnaissance, de rôle comme couples dans les consultations, décisions et orientations. La deuxième partie, analytique, confronte ces résultats aux Sciences Humaines et Théologiques. Les Sciences Humaines posent le couple selon les valeurs sociétales actuelles (recherche d’intimité, d’identité et d’épanouissement, égalité femme/homme, sexualité personnalisée), créant des tensions chez les couples chrétiens. Les Sciences Théologiques abordent le couple dans le christianisme : ses textes, bibliques, ecclésiaux, et ses pratiques. Nous vérifions qu’entre les discours d’Eglise (idéal du couple parfait dans l’amour, image d’Amour du Christ pour l’Eglise, référence à l’idéal religieux) et la réalité quotidienne des couples, se creuse un fossé, qu’ils vivent comme un manque de considération, une méconnaissance de leur réalité. La troisième partie, pratique, propose une pastorale déployant le charisme d’unité du couple en vue de vivre dans l’Eglise une reconnaissance mutuelle, un amour fraternel, une mission commune d’évangélisation, une communauté de disciples du Christ, tous Enfants du même Père. Notre travail se veut un souffle d’espérance, une réponse de chrétien marié à des questions de notre temps For Christians, couple was born from God’s Love and Desire. But today, is couple not living a crisis within the Church? This is our “Research Action” in Practical Theology. The first part is descriptive. Facing a “problem situation”, we question reality. The Word is given to married Christian couples. We listen to those who never get to speak in the Church usually. The problematic is: indeed there is a dichotomy between married Christian couples and their Church. They complain of not receiving gratitude, assuming no role as couples in consultations, decisions or orientations. The second part, which is analytical, confronts these results with Human and Theological Sciences. Human Sciences define the couple in the light of current societal values (research for intimacy, identity and self-fulfillment, equality between woman and man, personalized sexuality). This is source of tensions for Christian couples. Theological Sciences define the couple according to Christianity: Biblical, Ecclesial texts, and practices. We must admit that between Church discourses (ideal of the fine loving couple, image of Christ’s Love for his Church, in reference with the religious ideal) and the daily reality of the couples, the gap is widening which they live as a lack of consideration, a misunderstanding of their reality. The third part is practical and proposes a pastoral which displays the charisma of unity in the couple in order to live mutual recognition in the Church, brotherly love, a common mission for evangelization and a disciples’community of Christ, all, Children of the same Father. Our work wants to be a message of hope, an answer of a married Christian to questions of our time

Alexander Campbell, a contemporary of Joseph Smith, was the first to publish a critique of the Book of Mormon after actually having read it. Among other allegations, he arraigned that Joseph Smith wrote the book to resolve, with a voice of prophecy, theological issues contemporary to its publication. This study undertakes to examine Campbell's charge with regard to atonement doctrine. To assess the statement, this study first identifies the controversies about atonement doctrine in the years prior to the publication of the Book of Mormon, in the Northeastern region of the United States. It then compares the teachings inherent to those controversies to Book of Mormon atonement doctrine. This study concludes that the doctrine in the Book of Mormon does appear to resolve some of the controversies surrounding the doctrine of the atonement in the time and place relative to its publication. However, on other important points of controversy, it does not resolve the issues. Furthermore, as it expounds atonement doctrine, it combines concepts in ways not germane to its environment. It does not fit any model of soteriology that was prevalent in the time period and place of its original publication.

Said Nursî, né à la période de la première monarchie constitutionnelle et ayant assisté à la naissance de la République turque, tente d'adapter son discours religieux et politique aux exigences de la société ottomane et turque de l'époque. Ses activités sont implantées tant dans le domaine religieux que dans le domaine social et politique. Il réussit à fonder un mouvement après la création de la République qui non seulement a marqué l'histoire moderne de la Turquie républicaine, mais qui continue encore de se manifester à l'heure actuelle avec un dynamisme social à travers les "dershane", les maisons d'édition, les médias, les institutions et les organisations. Le mouvement nurcu, nurculuk, qui prétend être moderne en même temps que fidèle aux principes religieux, suscite un grand intérêt d'étude pour l'histoire de l'islam contemporain. Notre travail se donne pour objectif de détenniner le rapport de Said Nursî à son temps. En d'autres termes, il est question de savoir comment il adapte son discours, tant religieux que politique, à l'esprit de son temps : est-il moderne ou traditionnel? Qu'entend-il par « modernité »? Nous tentons de mettre en exergue les traits de sa démarche qui se revendique à la fois moderne et fidèle aux principes religieux du courant islamcl, renouveau ottoman attesté au début du XXe siècle, et plus précisément durant la seconde monarchie constitutionnelle Said Nursî, born at the time of the First Constitutional Monarchy and having attended the advent of the Turkish Republic, tries ta adapt his religious and political speech ta the requirements of the Ottoman and Turkish society of the time. His activities are established as mueh in the religious field as in the social and political domain. He succeeded in founding a movement after the creation of the Republic which not only marked the modern history of republican Turkey, but which still continues to appear at the present time with a social dynamism through the dershane, publishing hou ses, media, institutions and organizations. The nurcu movement, nurculuk, which claims to be modern and faithful to the religious principles at the same time, arouses a great interest for studying the history of contemporary Islam. Our work aims to determine Said Nursî's relationship to his time. In other words, it is a matter of knowing how he adapts his speech, both religious and political, to the spirit of his time : is it modern or traditional? We try to put forward the features of his approach, which claims to be modern and, at the same time, faithful to the religious principles of the islamci current, the Ottoman revival attested at the beginning of the 20th. L’œuvre de Soren Kierkegaard (Copenhague 1813-1855) se construit autour des concepts clefs d’existence, de subjectivité et de vérité. Dans cette étude, nous nous intéresserons plus particulièrement à sa pensée des stades d’existence. Ils incarnent les différentes possibilités de vie s’offrant à l’individu. Exister revient toujours à se situer soit dans le stade esthétique, soit dans l’éthique, soit dans le religieux. Kierkegaard considère l’existence esthétique comme la plus éloignée de l’existence religieuse. Pourtant, malgré les différences qui les séparent, une certaine ambiguïté subsiste entre elles. C’est pourquoi, notre réflexion nous amènera à nous interroger plus précisément sur les rapports existant entre les stades esthétique et religieux, mais aussi sur les relations qu’entretient ce type de dialectique proprement existentielle avec le modèle hégélien de la dialectique spéculative Soren Kierkegaard (Copenhaguen 1813-1855) work refers to a few concepts, the Existence, the Subjectivity and the Truth. L'objet de cette thèse est de rechercher des thématiques ésotériques dans la stratégie des jésuites pour accomplir, dans le contexte mouvementé de la France au tournant du XVIIIe siècle, leur mission pastorale de défense de la tradition catholique définie au Concile de Trente. Nous montrons que les pères jésuites s'appuient sur les productions littéraires de leurs écrivains profesionnels (scriptores liborum) et sur l'outil journalistique des "Mémoiresé et du "Dictionnaire universel" de Trévoux pour concrétiser leur projet pédagogique d'investir les savoirs scientifiques et historique, afin de répondre aux difficultés rencontrées aves les propositions philosophiques nouvelles. Les jésuites s'attachent à définir plusieurs notions traitées par la physique (l'attraction, la matière, etc. ), tout comme ils tentent de préciser la fonction des fables, de la mythologie antique et de justifier la grande ancienneté de la chronologie biblique face à la découverte des annales chinoises. En même temps, les pères abordent plusieurs questions fondées sur la notion de secret (pierre philosophale, cure magnétique, poudre de sympathie, baguette divinatoire, kabbale, prophéties, oracles, emblèmes, énigmes, etc. ) qui, à ce titre, se rattachent aux thématiques ésotériques. S'il s'agit pour eux de susciter un débat propice au déploiement d'un discours rhétorique, plutôt que d'affronter directement les arguements adverses, ces derniers s'efforcent de récupérer telle ou telle thématique au gré des opportunités dans le but de l'utiliser pour justifier leurs propres idées, ce qui cache mal leur difficulté à bâtir une doctrine globale cohérente. Une stratégie ambigüe dont l'enjeu est double. D'une part, il est nécessaire d'apporter des réponses aux attaques protestantes qui cherchent à ruiner la crédibilité tant des Pères de l'Eglise que du dogme trinitaire et, partant, menacent lza tradition catholique. D'autre part, les jésuites doivent préserver les mystère cachés d'une nature créee par Dieu, au risque de soutenir des positions scientifiques obsolètes The object of this thesis is to look for the place of the esoteric themes in the strategy of Jesuite to carry out, in the animated context of the France in the turn of the XVIIIth century, their pastoral mission of defence of the catholic tradition, determinated at the council of Trent. We show that the Jesuit fathers lean on the literary productions of their professionnal writers (scriptores librorum) and th journalistic tool of the "Mémoires" and the "Dictionnaire universel" de Trévoux, to concretize their pedagogical project to invest the scientific and historical knowledges, to reply to the met difficulties coming up against the new philosophical propositions. The Jesuits attempt to define several notions discussed by the pysics (attraction, matter, etc. ), quite as they try o specify the function of the fables of the antique mythology and to prove the great antiquity of the biblical chronology facing the discovery of the chinese annals. At the same time, the fathers approach several questions based on the notion of secret (philosopher's stone, magnetic cure, powder with sympathy, divinatory baguette, cabala, propheties, oracles, emblems, enigmae), which as such are connected with the esoteric themes. On the one hand, it is necessary to answer to the Protestant criticisms who try to ruin the cridibility of the Fathers of the Church as Trinitarian Dogma, and, consequently, to threaten the catholic tradition. On the other hand, the Jsuits have to protect the hidden mysteries of a nature created by God, at the risk of support obsolete scientifical positions

Né outre-atlantique il y a presque cinquante ans, le mouvement chrétien inclusif milite, au nom de l'Evangile, pour le pleine intégration des personnes homosexuelles, bisexuelles et trangenres au sein de la vie et du ministère de l'Eglise et s'efforce de combattre toute exclusion. Il est constitué de l'ensemble des paroisses, groupes et communautés qui offrent, au nom de Jésus-Christ, un accueil des personnes lgbt dans les Eglises. Il ne s'agit pas à proprement parler d'un mouvement organisé mais il reflète une grande variété d'options théologiques, pastorales et politiques. Nous appuyant sur une enquête de type sociologique, nous sommes partis à la rencontre des paroisses, groupes et communautés chrétiens accueillants. Nous avons tenté ensuite d'élaborer une typologie, fondée sur seize modèles, rendant compte de la diversité des stratégies pastorales. Nous avons enfin essayé de formuler une théologie de l'hospitalité, induite par cette praxis de l'accueil et disséminée dans une abondante littérature liturgique, pastorale et apologétique. Nous nous sommes efforcé de présenter, d'une manière systématique et assurément provisoire, les réflexions, convergentes et parfois discordantes, issues de ce mouvement, de ses pratiques de l'accueil et de ses théologiens(ne)s ; elles font de l'hospitalité de Dieu, manifestée en Jésus-Christ, le fondement de la vie communautaire et de l'interrogation éthique sur la relation à l'autre, dans la sexualité comme dans le vivre ensemble Born in America about 50 years ago, the inclusive christian movement advocates, according to the Gospael, for the full inclusion of the Igbt people in the life and ministry of the Church, tries to eradicate any kind of exclusion. It gathers parishes, groups and communities that provide hospitality to the Igbt people in the Churches, in the name of Jesus-Christ. It doesn't constitute an organized movement but it refects a great diversity of theological, pastoral and political options. We have used a sociological survey to approach those welcoming christian parishes, groups and communities. We have tried to elaborate a typology, based on 16 models, that could do justice to the diversity of pastoral strategies. We also have tried to articulate a theology of hospitalité, induced by this practice of welcome and disseminated in an abundant collection of liturgical, pastoral and apologetical literarture. We therefore have tried to present, in a systematic and somehow transitory way, the converging and diverging reflexions coming from that movement, its practices of welcome and its theologians. They make of the hospitality of God, expressed in Jesus-Christ, the foundation of community life and ethical investigation of how to relate with one another in sexuality as in life together

Le choix de la bipolarité « institution Église et individualisation du croire » se justifie par la recherche scientifique avec l’option de droit canonique. Il s’agit d’une démarche pluridisciplinaire promue par les chercheurs en droit ecclésial. La problématique éclaire les questions sur l’appartenance à deux sociétés, civile et ecclésiale. La première partie, avec un regard socio-théologique, cherche à caractériser individualisation et fait religieux. Elle veut montrer les enjeux du caractère antinomique de ces deux thèmes et comment sortir de la contradiction. Au travers des sections se dégagent les grands traits concrets du fait religieux, lequel cherche à répondre en s’appuyant sur un discours ecclésiologique. Notre approche est phénoménologique et théologique; s’y glisse l’individualisation du croire. La deuxième partie s’ouvre à la normativité du droit : dans quelle mesure le Magistère élabore des stratégies de la gestion de l’institution? La réflexion doctrinale de l’Église l’a conduite à rédiger un code, en tenant compte de l’idée de séparation « Église-État », ou du pluralisme religieux. Le diagnostic est patent : l’ecclesia décline vers l’individualisation, et cette dernière tend à la laïcisation, voire la déchristianisation. L’étude le montre : l’appartenance est nécessaire, tant à l’Église qu’à la société, et elle passe par la reconnaissance des instances sociétales et ecclésiales, s’inscrivant dans l’optique canonique et normative. Quelle perspective pour cette double appartenance? Est-elle envisageable? Quoi qu’il en soit de la complexité des questions soulevées (théologiques, dogmatiques, sociologiques et canoniques), la gestion de cette double appartenance doit être le fait du croyant aujourd’hui It is appropriate to choose to study the institution of the Church and the individualization of belief using scientific research with regard to canon law. This entails dealing with the question following the multidisciplinary approach adopted by studies of church law. Such an investigation throws light on how civil and church societies are interdependent and belong together. The first part of the study, taking a social-theological view, seeks to describe individualization, on the one hand, and the reality of religion, on the other. It endeavours to show the contradictory interaction of these two themes and suggests how this may be resolved. Here the principal outlines of religious reality are examined, the exposition relying on a study of church forms and traditions. Our approach is phenomenological and theological : it is here that the individualization of belief comes in. The second part introduces the authoritative standard of law : to what extent the Magisterium influences the way the day-to-day life of the institution is conducted? The Church’s study of doctrine has led it to draw up a code, keeping in mind the concepts of the separation of “Church and State” or religious pluralism. The result is evident : the ecclesia is turning towards individualization, and this result in a tendency towards laicization, even de-christianization. The study shows this is happening. Interdependence and a mutual association are necessary, as much for the Church as for the society, and these belong together in the perspectives of both canon and normative law. What future lies ahead for their association? Can we suggest how it may happen? No matter how complex the questions raised, be they theological, dogmatic, sociological and canonical, bringing about this double association must be an objective for the believer of today

L’objet de cette thèse de doctorat est d’analyser la conception du dialogue amoureux et du dialogue religieux que le philosophe et théologien allemand, Franz Rosenzweig, développe dans sa correspondance avec Eugen et Margrit Rosenstock, publiée sous le titre Die « Gritli »-Briefe. Cette étude se consacre d’une part à l’analyse de l’articulation du dialogue religieux et du dialogue amoureux dans cette correspondance, d’autre part à celle du rapport qu’entretiennent les lettres de Rosenzweig avec ses textes philosophiques et notamment, L’Étoile de la Rédemption. La première partie de la thèse traite des caractéristiques formelles de la correspondance, ainsi que de la manière dont Rosenzweig lui-même réfléchit sa pratique d’écriture. Ces analyses permettent de déterminer ce qui constitue le cadre de la relation amoureuse qu’il entretient avec Gritli. Dans un second temps, on partira de la définition de l’amour que Rosenzweig livre dans ses lettres à Gritli, pour comprendre comment le dialogue interreligieux se nourrit de cette définition et en quoi la dimension religieuse est complémentaire de la dimension érotique. Là encore, on s’efforcera de partir de l’analyse de la manière dont Rosenzweig évoque ces thématiques pour déterminer la fonction qu’elles adoptent au sein de la correspondance The aim of this doctoral research is to analyse the characteristics of dialogue within Franz Rosenzweig’s correspondence with Eugen and Margrit Rosenstock, the so-called “Gritli”- Letters. Using different methods derived from literature, philosophy, linguistics and cultural studies, this interdisciplinary project focuses on the practice of dialogue by Franz Rosenzweig through an analysis of his philosophical writings, in order to compare the content of the letters and of other forms of texts. The letters showcase Rosenzweig’s understanding of dialogue, as developed in his main work, The Star of Redemption and in other essays such as “The new thinking. ” The main themes of this research are the extramarital relationship between Franz Rosenzweig and Margrit Rosenstock and the interreligious dialogue which constitutes the frame of this correspondence and one of the main issues for the correspondents. The link between these two forms of dialogue lies in Rosenzweig’s particular understanding of dialogue, because he doesn’t draw any boundaries between love in its amorous meaning and love in its religious meaning. This principle allows us to analyze Rosenzweig’s multifaceted conception of Jewishness and of interreligious dialogue. Another aspect of this research concerns the limits of dialogue in Rosenzweig’s correspondence and the way he refers to them, leading to an analysis of time, death and silence, which are important topics in Rosenzweig’s thinking

Il réinterroge les cadres de l'action publique entendue dans une acception large et les bases des fonctionnements sociaux et spatiaux en observant les logiques et les recompositions autour du religieux. La rencontre institutionnalisée de l’Église catholique avec des étudiants en professions de santé, en particulier ceux en médecine (EM) au sein des Aumôneries universitaires catholiques (AUC) et des Centres d’entraide aux études médicales dirigés par des Jésuites (CEEMJ), tel le Centre Laennec de Paris, a débuté en France pendant le dernier quart du XIXe siècle, a culminé au milieu du XXe siècle, pour diminuer ensuite de manière continue dans les AUC, malgré l’augmentation parallèle du nombre d’EM. À l’inverse, la fréquentation des CEEMJ restait à son niveau maximal. En se basant sur une enquête dans les 31 AUC et les 3 CEEMJ où cette rencontre s’effectue actuellement, cette thèse examine les enjeux de la rencontre dans ces institutions sur le plan pastoral, théologique et bioéthique et propose des moyens susceptibles de la faciliter. Les obstacles à la rencontre pastorale dans les AUC sont la diminution de la pratique religieuse et le manque de temps libre des EM. Dans les CEEMJ, qui accueillent des EM de toute religion, la fréquentation reste maximale du fait des excellents résultats de l’entraide aux études ; mais la rencontre pastorale s’y heurte aux mêmes difficultés. L’obstacle principal aux rencontres portant sur la théologie orientée vers la médecine (inviolabilité de la vie humaine, maladie, souffrance, mort) est aussi le manque de temps des EM. Le même obstacle empêche une rencontre suffisante pour transmettre aux EM la justification des principes magistériels de bioéthique et de faire une comparaison avec les principes des autres religions. En dépit de ces obstacles, très difficiles à surmonter, la rencontre avec les EM devrait être maintenue autant que possible Formal contacts between the Roman Catholic Church and students of healthcare, especially medical students, either in Catholic Fellowships in Universities (CFUs) under the auspices of chaplains, or in Centres for Mutual Support in Medical Studies run by Jesuits (CMSMSJs), as Laennec Centre in Paris, began in France during the last quarter of the XIXth century. The number of these contacts in CFUs reached a peak in the middle of the XXth century but thereafter suffered a steep decline. This was at a time when the number of medical students had actually increased. In contrast, attendance at CMSMSJs, which admit students irrespective of their religion, remained at a maximal level. This doctoral thesis is based on surveys of 31 CFUs and 3 CMSMSJs in which contacts currently take place. It examines the pastoral, theological and bioethical aspects of these contacts and considers how they might be facilitated. In the CFUs, obstacles to pastoral contact include a general decrease in religious observance and increasing pressures of time on medical students. In the CMSMSJs, attendance by students, whatever their religion, remains maximal owing to the excellent study support provided. However, the pastoral contact with Catholic students is confronted with similar difficulties. Pressure of time remains the main obstacle to discussions on the theology of healthcare (problems relating to sanctity of human life, illness, suffering and death). The same obstacle hinders participation by medical students in discussions justifying Roman Catholic bioethical principles and comparison of these principles with those of other religions. Despite these difficulties, almost impossible to overcome, it is recommended that contacts between these Roman Catholic bodies and medical students should be maintained as far as possible

Max Weber affirme que l'éthique protestante a des affinités avec l'esprit du capitalisme. Il a identifié les valeurs morales du protestantisme et du capitalisme comme des caractères de la société moderne. Les chrétiens considèrent naturel de défendre le néo-libéralisme. Cette thèse veut montrer qu'il y a, au contraire, une autre éthique protestante. C'est l'éthique de Jacques Ellul et celle de Paul Ricoeur. Elle vise également à mettre en application la dernière nommée dans la réalité. Pour cet objectif, les dialogues entre le libéralisme en Angleterre et le libéralisme en France, entre le néo-libéralisme de F. A. Hayek et l'éthique de Paul Ricoeur et entre la pensée de F. A. Hayek et celle de Jacques Ellul sont successivement exposés. La passion de «l'amour du gain», justifiée par l'étude sur la morale, à travers les pensées de David Hume et de Max Weber, le désaccord entre l'idée du néo-libéralisme économique de F. A. He has identified the moral values of Protestantism and capitalism as characters of the modern society. Christians consider it natural to support néo-liberalism as their own belief. This thesis shows that there are other Protestant ethics, focusing specifically on the ethics of Jacques Ellul and that of Paul Ricoeur. With this aim in view, the dialogues between the liberalism of England and the liberalism of France, between the néo-liberalism of F. A. Hayek and the ethic of Paul Ricoeur, and between the idea of F. A. Hayek and that of Jacques Ellul are successively expounded : which are the passion of "the love of the profit", justified by the study on morals, through the thoughts of David Hume and Max Weber. It also involves the dissension between the economic ideas of néo-liberalism of F. A. Hayek and the ethics of Paul Ricoeur, and the ethics of donation and grace according to Jacques Ellul. These dialogues will lead us to conclude and support the fact that one must take account of the ethics of the good life, which will accompany the confession of faith in the world of economic néo-liberalism

La charité est une notion complexe en raison de son histoire. Les apports de la philosophie grecque, du donné scripturaire, patristique et scolastique, ainsi que le champ d’application social et communautaire sont autant d’éléments qui ont permis aux théologiens du renouveau moral de la première moitié du XXe siècle, de redonner une place éminente à la charité comme vertu, mère et forme des autres vertus. Cette redécouverte de la vertu de charité permet de sortir la morale du juridisme et de l’extrinsécisme dans lequel elle s’était progressivement enfermée et d’envisager la vie chrétienne comme une orientation vers le bonheur dont la règle fondamentale est le double commandement de l’amour de Dieu et du prochain qui a des implications multiples dans les domaines spirituel, social et communautaire. L’élaboration des textes du concile Vatican II, en particulier le chapitre V de Lumen Gentium, complété en Gaudium et Spes, reprend en partie seulement le donné développé par les théologiens du renouveau au sujet de la charité sous l’angle de la communion trinitaire et d’une ecclésiologie de communion, et non plus dans une perspective vertueuse héritée du thomisme. L’homme peut répondre à sa vocation universelle à la sainteté dans la charité qui n’est rien d’autre que de vivre de la sainteté de Dieu et dans la perfection de l’amour. The texts of Vatican II, particularly the fifth chapter of Lumen Gentium, completed by Gaudium et Spes, includes part only the thinking developed by theologians about the revival of charity in terms of trinitarian communion and an ecclesiology of communion. The Council does not reproduce the virtuous perspective of thomism. Christians can respond their universal vocation to holiness in charity, which is nothing more than to live as God’s holiness and the perfection of love. Holiness is the same to all, although she is lived in a variety of modes, depending on the condition of life for everyone. Charity is presented as a responsorial structure of Christian life : everyone is invited to respond to his vocation of man and baptized by loving God and neighbor

We suggest clues for this continent. It seems to be fundamental to restore a cultural existence to ethnos, to federate inter-state groups and to reconcile them in spite of borders, in order to release politics in its expression. L’évangélisation du Mai-Ndombe, dans la province de Bandundu, au Congo-Kinshasa, a commencé le 4 octobre 1907. Appartenant à ses débuts au Vicariat Apostolique du Congo Indépendant, puis, à partir de 1919, au Vicariat Apostolique de Léopoldville avant d’en être séparé en 1953, pour former le Vicariat Apostolique d’Inongo, le territoire du district du Mai-Ndombe a été érigé en diocèse d’Inongo, le 10 novembre 1959. Lus de cent ans après la venue des premiers missionnaires, la situation religieuse se présente d’une façon contrastée : l’implantation de l’Eglise, avec un clergé autochtone bien en place, la naissance d’une congrégation religieuse diocésaine, les nombreuses vocations sacerdotales et religieuses, le nombre croissant des catholiques (440 878 sur une population de 1 036 667), d’une part; la recrudescence de la sorcellerie, la quête populaire de guérison, le foisonnement de nouveaux mouvements religieux en marge des Eglises et la pauvreté, d’autre part. En retraçant l’histoire de l’évangélisation du Mai-Ndombe, cette thèse examine une nouvelle proposition de la foi élaborée dans la perspective de l’inculturation. More than a hundred years after the first missionaries arrived, the religious situation is contrasted with, on the one hand the presence of the Church with a well established native clergy, the start of a diocesan religious congregation, numerous religious and priesthood vocations, the growing number of Catholics (440 878 out of a population of 1 036 667), and on the other hand the upsurge of witchcraft, the popular quest for curing, the proliferation of new religious movements outside the Church, and poverty. By tracing the history of the Mai-Ndombe evangelization, this thesis studies a new approach to faith devised from the inculturation viewpoint. Considering the obstacles met by evangelization and studying the process of inculturation, the thesis suggests inculturation Pastoralia which relies on the understanding of the Church as the family of God whose living church communities are the perfect illustration. Ce travail représente la première étude synthétique de l'ensemble de l'oeuvre considérée comme authentique du célèbre hymnographe constantinopolitain du 6ème siècle : Romanos le Mélode. Peu intéressée au kontakion lui-même, dont cette oeuvre signe l'apogée, l'étude se porte sur l'organisation en réseaux symboliques des images et métaphores grâce auxquelles est décrit l'oeuvre de Salut accomplie en Christ. Certainement bilingue, le prédicateur-poète s'inspire fortement de son héritage syriaque, et notamment d'Ephrem, tout en manifestant une priorité pastorale, qui le rapproche davantage encore de Jacques de Saroug, évêque syriaque quasi-contemporain; comme lui, Romanos le Mélode est avant tout un pasteur d'âmes, peu versé dans les débats doctrinaux, mais consacré à l'édification spirituelle de ses auditeurs. Les différents réseaux symboliques analysés sont : le printemps spirituel de la Résurrection, l'arbre et le fruit, l'huile et la corne, la pierre et la maison; un traitement plus long est réservé au vaste ensemble de symboles gravitant autour de la métaphore du Christ comme médecin et de la guérison spirituelle, thème favori déjà chez Ephrem. La conclusion générale s'ouvre sur l'étude d'un fragment de kontakion chantant Romanos le Mélode lui-même, que sa célébrité a très vite inscrit aux rangs des saints de l'Eglise orientale This study attempts, for the first time, to give a symbolical analysis of the oeuvre of Romanos the Melodist, the famous hymnographer of sixth-century Constantinople, based on the French edition of the 60 authentic kontakia established by Grosdidier de Matons. Its objective is to throw a new light on the symbolical structures of Romanos' theological thinking. This has been achieved by analyzing the images and metaphors which he uses in order to describe Salvation accomplished in Christ or to exhort his audience to live truly according to the promises made at baptism. Some networks of symbols are explained here : the set of symbols around the springtime of resurrection, the tree and the fruit, the oil and the horn, and images of spiritual edification like the stone and the house. Then, a longer section is devoted to the large field of medical symbolism, which was already one of Ephrem's favourites. He was certainly a major influence for the bilingual Greek-Syriac deacon, alongside Jacob of Serugh, a Syrian bishop from the late fifth century. Like Romanos, Jacob was more of a preacher and less interested in the doctrinary conflicts of his time, and was entirely devoted to the spiritual edification of his audience. His influence on Romanos is revealed in many places in the hymns, and further studies will certainly enhance this even more as we get to know Jacob of Serugh better and better. In the end of this study the symbolism of clothing is expounded, which is characteristic of Syriac Christianity, before an excursus on the ancient sun symbolism. The conlusion offers a glimpse on a fragment of a kontakion about Romanos the Melodist himself, a saint of the oriental Church

Les activités de direction et de prédication permettent d'aborder la spiritualité de ce jésuite en montrant l'articulation du littéraire, du social et du spirituel autour d'une réflexion sur les «raisons de l'écriture». Religious Tract Society's (RTS) publications for boys and for families, the "Boy's Own Paper", "The Leisure Hour" and "The Sunday at Home", reveal many of the efforts of Evangelical members of the middle class to counter the subversive influences of the fin de siecle. Through an examination of the changing portrayal of father figures in its stories, this paper argues that the Society was responding to contemporary socio-cultural and religious concerns. There are three major types of fatherhood displayed in these publications. A new version of the Trinity - the heavenly Father, the earthly father and the surrogate father - served as a powerful discursive weapon in the effort to maintain religious adherence and societal and familial continuity. It also argues that the Society while recognizing the value of women's moral guidance emphasised, as in earlier generations, men's, and specifically, fathers' primary moral and educational role in the family. Fictional stories and some non-fictional accounts found in these publications between 1879-1889 provide access to this older version of Evangelical domesticated masculinity and romanticized Christian manliness. This paper highlights an important minoritarian Victorian religious construction of masculinity largely ignored by historians who have focused their studies on dominant secular versions of imperial and muscular masculinity. More precisely, this paper demonstrates that the RTS offered a challenge to dominant British ideologies of masculinity. The religious ideal advocated by members of the RTS persisted alongside and in opposition to the newer constructions of imperial and muscular masculinity. This paper also begins to address the issue of how constructs of fatherhood were built up during boyhood through "The Leisure Hour" and "The Sunday at Home", but especially through the "Boy's Own Paper". For the members of the Religious Tract Society, the formation of masculinity for middle-class boys included expectations of their development as independent, self-sufficient men, able to perpetuate and strengthen their middle-class values and standing, while emphasising the preservation of traditional Evangelical values.

Through analyzing their stylistic characteristics, design concepts, historical context and sales management, this study clarifies the missionary strategies of R.T.S. at its different stages, and how its missionary posters and iconography reflect the diverse challenges in delivering Gospel in a country with different cultures. Through the case studies on the missionary posters “Broad and Narrow Way” and “Prodigal Son” in Tainan (Taiwan), focusing on the themes, motifs, artistic forms and the way they were creatively displayed to replace the traditional Buddhist and Taoist shrine, the cross-cultural encounters between China and Europe in 19th-20th century, as well as the accommodation of Christian values in the Chinese society are vividly illustrated. The missionary posters of R.T.S. as visual materials document not only western missionaries’ attitude towards Chinese traditional beliefs and customs, but also the missionary strategies of R.T.S. in China, contributing new insights in terms of missionary, art historical and cultural history in China and Taiwan.

Although matters of faith, religion and spirituality are central to the lives of millions of people in the global South. and many faith based organizations are actively involved in development. few northern academics in the field of international development make explicit reference to religion's role in development. and, if they do, the subject is often subsumed under another category, such as culture. This study seeks to shed light on the interface between religion and international development in Canadian academic institutions: to what extent is the influence -- for good or ill-- of religion or development acknowledged in their programmes, publications, and curricula? This is accomplished by means of an analysis of references to religion in the Canadian Journal of Development Studies (CJDS) and Canadian Development Reports as well as in the course offerings of International Development Studies (IDS) departments at Canadian universities. Findings show that only about 1% of article titles and 2% per cent of abstracts mention the subject of religion in its broadest definition over the twenfy five year history of the CJDS. Of 2,684 IDS courses offered (including courses cross-listed with Religious Studies departments), some 3% mention religion in their titles, and 8% in course descriptions. However, upon closer examination, only a handful of courses directly analyze the relationship between religion and development. Findings from this research are further interrogated in surveys and interviews with key informants, in order to uncover some of the reasons for what is perceived to be a lacuna in IDS teaching and research. Various recommendations are advanced: positivistic biases in academia need to be acknowledged, more research should be devoted towards an area currently understudied, and northern academics must be challenged to consider the religious reality of southern life, for, in Robert Chambers' words, "Whose reality counts?" Clearly the religious dimension of global life needs to be afforded a sharper focus in the programmes, publications and curricula of IDS departments at Canadian academic institutions. Under the influence by Yin Shun’s thoughts, The Society for Buddhist Renaissance and Modern Zen Society were founded during the time when the Martial Law was first lifted. They published Society for Buddhist Renaissance Monthly (1987.02-1994.01) and Modern Zen Magazine (1989.02-1994.08) and a total of 1326 sample articles from these two publications constitute the research subject of this dissertation. 　　　This study aims to understand the composition of Society for Buhhist Renaissance Monthly and Modern Zen Magazine’s communication content, as well as reflect the special significance of Society for Buddhist Renaissance and Modern Zen Society in the development of Taiwan’s Buddhism. Reformed content analysis and citation analysis are applied in the course of research to achieve a comprehensive answer to the research question. 　　　The research shows that Society for Buddhist Renaissance Monthly and Modern Zen Magazine have different focus in content. Society for Buddhist Renaissance Monthly advocated primitive Buddhism; emphasize the importance of practice and fulfilling The Four Arousings of Mindfulness in daily life. Modern Zen Magazine focused more on organization’s news, progress and such. The main figures in Society for Buddhist Renaissance are Thomas Chang, Zhang Ci-Tian and Wei Wei Chang. The magazine adopted the descriptive literary style. The main figures in Modern Zen Magazine are Li Yuan-Song, Wen Jin-Ke and Lian Yong-Chuan. The magazine adopted the narrative literary style. In the development of Taiwan’s Buddhism, both Society for Buddhist Renaissance and Modern Zen Society reflected the further implementation and reflection of Master Yin Shun’s ideology on Humanistic Buddhism. From the Buddhism perspective, they try to integrate with reality, making an effort towards modernization. However, their existences were too short for their effort to make a greater impact.

Le Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ou parti populaire indien fait partie du mouvement de l'hindutva qui désire rendre l'Inde plus hindoue, qu'elle devienne un pays officiellement hindou. Le mouvement et le parti sont tous les deux controversés. Le présent travail cherche à mieux comprendre le fonctionnement du BJP. Son traitement des minorités religieuses, soit les chrétiens, les musulmans et les sikhs a été étudié dans ce but. C'est par une revue des publications officielles des 25 premières années du parti qu'a été accompli le travail. L'hypothèse était que le parti est principalement divisé selon des lignes idéologiques, entre extrémistes et pragmatiques. Des paroles inclusives envers les minorités étaient considérées comme l'œuvre de l'aile pragmatique, tandis que des paroles discriminatoires viendraient des extrémistes. La conclusion a été que le parti est bel et bien divisé à ce niveau. L'aile pragmatique semble avoir le dessus, la majorité des écrits est inclusive. Les chrétiens et musulmans ont fait l'objet d'une certaine discrimination. Malgré cela, les paroles les concernant sont largement positives. Les sikhs sont très bien traités dans les publications. Les écrits du BJP sont plus axés sur leurs revendications contre le parti du Congrès et le Pakistan. ______________________________________________________________________________
