Coordination Council for the writing of dissertations on religious studies, which, in coordination with the Department of History, Philosophy and Law of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, operates at the Department of Religious Studies of the IF of the National Academy of Sciences (headed by Prof. P. Yarotsky), is called together with the dissertations and their scientific leaders to coordinate the name and concept of the dissertations. , to certify the relevance of their topic, to prevent (to warn) the duplication of research work, and at the same time, thematic discrimidation or denominational engagement (assertion) of scientific research. The council can organize scientific advising a search engineer, provide him with assistance in selecting literature on the subject of research, and so on. Actual for each search engineer is to search the place of publication of a certain MES number of scientific articles, in particular in foreign publications. The Department of Religious Studies is working on the publication of possible editions for dissertation articles not only in Ukraine but also abroad, including our Ukrainian Religious Studies Quarterly to scientific-methodical publications.

This paper seeks to advance the global study of religiosity and spirituality by conducting a meta-analysis of major approaches in the field. While the field, and thus the collected publications, are dominated by Western approaches, particular attention is paid in this analysis to publications from geographies that are not from the United States or Western Europe, especially these world regions: Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Similarly, while the study of religiosity is considerably centered around Christianity, this analysis extends beyond Christianity, to the extent possible in extant studies, to include publications investigating other world religious traditions, such as African spirituality, African witchcraft, Afro-Caribbean religious traditions, Buddhism, Confucianism, folk religions, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Mormonism, Neo-paganism, New Religious Movements (NRMs), Shamanism, Sikhism, Spiritism, Taoism, and spirituality generally. A total of 530 publications were reviewed, and the studies are categorized by unit of analysis into: Macro, micro, and meso-level. Measurement constructs include religious demography, culture, belonging, behaving, believing, bonding, religious salience, spiritual identities, religious networks, occupations, congregations, denominations, and faith-based organizations. Non-Western sources and approaches are analyzed toward furthering future research in under-studied world regions. Implications are drawn for the field, such as the need to geo-code publications at the country level.

This panel poses the question, “Is there a center to American religious history?” We historians live in a world and work in a period when the politically correct answer to the question is, “Of course not!” In this day of decentered religious historiography the celebration of radical diversity seems to prohibit any other response. In our publications and teaching we set out to expose readers and students to the rich religious pluralism in America. We catalogue the traditions that reach back to colonial times, the communities that filled out the wider spectrum of religious options during the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, and the new religious movements that have appeared since the midpoint of the past century. One publication that provides a contemporary index to this inclusive catalogical approach is J. Gordon Mellon's Encyclopedia of American Religions, which in its fifth edition filled 1,150 pages with data regarding more than 2,100 discrete religious organizations in America, from the Aaronic Order to the Zoroastrian Associations in North America.

The article is devoted to the analysis of hate speech verbal components in publications of “Bezbozhnik” at the beginning of the XX th century and in modern mass-media. Verbal and iconic components of the publications (caricatures) are considered. Generalizing the hate speech of antireligious texts and caricatures it is possible to ascertain that its expressiveness and the figurativeness are easily translated in the conflict concepts.

In this work, I analyse the role of judiciary in the process of censorship in India. Focusing on the subject of “Religious offense and censorship of publications,” I examine the rationales and justifications given by courts to restrict freedom of speech and expression. I argue that the issues like public order, and the concern to protect religious sentimentalities of different communities from hurt in a secular democracy, form the bedrock on which the courts construct the legal justification for curtailment of right to freedom of expression. In the process, the courts define the “reasonability” of restrictions, as advocated under article 19(2) of the constitution, very expansively, thereby allowing wide latitude for state intervention in the free exercise of this fundamental right. In a way, the position of the courts reflect a sense of legal patronage for state action against misuse of freedom of speech and expression, and it also exhibits a form of legal paternalism where the courts educates the citizens regarding the permissible limits of “matter” and “manner” of speech acts. I further argue that this attitude of the courts, along with the ambiguity attached with the nature of statutory laws, and the structural and procedural limitations of the legal process creates a “web of censorship” that fails to provide the legal protection required for the free exercise of the right to freedom of speech and expression. However, despite these limitations, and increasing intervention of non-state actors in the process of censorship, the role of courts cannot be undermined. As the constitutional authority to interpret and define the scope of freedom of speech and expression, they continue to play a dominant role in the politics of censorship in Indian context.

Nineteenth-century periodical literature, recognised today as a distinctive and significant feature of Victorian public communication, is voluminous. Yet in order to argue that the editor-publisher Elizabeth Hayes made a significant contribution to evangelising journalism, this thesis finds it imperative to situate her work within the enormous outpourings of the Victorian periodical press. For a Victorian woman to succeed in journalism was impressive and this investigation argues that Hayes capably led an international journal of religious ideas to stability and longevity. The investigation will show that Hayes, foundress of an organisation which edited, published and distributed a Franciscan monthly journal - to date scarcely investigated- was prepared prior to 1872 for her subsequent journalistic mission. The argument that Hayes made a significant contribution to nineteenth-century Catholic journalism appears strongest when evidence of the immense power of the press for good and evil is provided. This is accomplished hopefully though an examination of both secular and religious periodical literature and in particular by situating Hayes’ output within this milieu. The argument is further strengthened through a detailed examination of the actual contents of Hayes’ Annals of Our Lady of the Angels, of the numerous contributions to her Annals and of the editing, publishing and distribution methods which she employed in her mission. The argument shows Hayes’ publication to be a significant contribution in the literary field to a growing body of research on late nineteenth-century professional women who enriched society with religious periodicals. The thesis argues that Hayes provided matter of interest to general readers and presented the progress and development of the Franciscan Order. The journal’s range of themes adds weight to the growing body of evidence of how women’s topics varied in the Victorian religious periodical press. It is argued that Hayes’ diffusion of good literature was an authentic medium of evangelisation over twenty-one years. As writer, editor, publisher, manager of printing and distribution, it is argued that Hayes was a significant contributor to the Apostolate of the Press and that she used her journal as a tool of both adult education and entertainment. L’essor remarquable dans le champ religieux contemporain de toutes sortes de formes de « religiosités populaires » au sein ou en marge des institutions religieuses établies peut apparaître comme un paradoxe en ce début de troisième millénaire. Ainsi, s’agissant du christianisme, il est établi que tout au long de son histoire la question des croyances et pratiques religieuses dites populaires a souvent été perçue comme relevant du domaine des survivances du paganisme que l’Eglise se devait de combattre. Sur le terrain du catholicisme en Afrique, la question des « religiosités populaires » est également d’actualité et ce, dans le contexte d’une effervescence religieuse généralisée qui, tout en se nourrissant des ressources qu’offre la tradition chrétienne, puise également dans le vivier de la religion et de la culture traditionnelles. Ce phénomène se présente comme une nouvelle manière de pratiquer la religion et de vivre la foi chrétienne qui interpelle la science théologique et la responsabilité pastorale de l’Eglise. Par son caractère exponentiel et sa forte dimension anthropologique et théologique, la problématique des « religiosités populaires » devient une donne socio-religieuse incontournable qui ne saurait laisser indifférent quiconque s’intéresse au présent et à l’avenir de la jeune et dynamique chrétienté africaine
The remarkable growth in the contemporary religious field all sorts of forms of "popular religiosity" within or outside established religious institutions may seem a paradox in this third millennium. Thus, in the case of Christianity, it is established that throughout its history the question of religious beliefs and practices popular saying has often been perceived as the domain of the survivals of paganism that the institution had to fight. Field of Catholicism in Africa, the question of "popular religiosity" is also an issue and this, in the context of a widespread religious ferment, while feeding on the resources offered by the Christian tradition also draws the pool of religion and traditional culture. This phenomenon presents itself as a new way to worship and live the Christian faith that challenges the theological and pastoral responsibility of the Church. By its exponential character and his strong theological and anthropological dimension, the problem of "popular religiosity" became a religious and social condition which must not remain indifferent to anyone interested in the present and the future of the young and dynamic African Christianity

Pour les chrétiens, le couple est né de l’Amour et du Désir de Dieu. Aujourd’hui, ne vit-il pas un malaise au sein de l’Eglise ? C’est notre Recherche-Action en Théologie Pratique. La première partie est descriptive. Devant une «situation-problème», interrogeons le réel. La parole est donnée aux couples chrétiens mariés. Qu’on entende ceux qu’on n’entend pas d’habitude dans l’Eglise. La problématique : il y a bien un malaise entre ces couples et leur Eglise. Ils disent ne pas y avoir de reconnaissance, de rôle comme couples dans les consultations, décisions et orientations. La deuxième partie, analytique, confronte ces résultats aux Sciences Humaines et Théologiques. Les Sciences Humaines posent le couple selon les valeurs sociétales actuelles (recherche d’intimité, d’identité et d’épanouissement, égalité femme/homme, sexualité personnalisée), créant des tensions chez les couples chrétiens. Les Sciences Théologiques abordent le couple dans le christianisme : ses textes, bibliques, ecclésiaux, et ses pratiques. Nous vérifions qu’entre les discours d’Eglise (idéal du couple parfait dans l’amour, image d’Amour du Christ pour l’Eglise, référence à l’idéal religieux) et la réalité quotidienne des couples, se creuse un fossé, qu’ils vivent comme un manque de considération, une méconnaissance de leur réalité. La troisième partie, pratique, propose une pastorale déployant le charisme d’unité du couple en vue de vivre dans l’Eglise une reconnaissance mutuelle, un amour fraternel, une mission commune d’évangélisation, une communauté de disciples du Christ, tous Enfants du même Père. Notre travail se veut un souffle d’espérance, une réponse de chrétien marié à des questions de notre temps
For Christians, couple was born from God’s Love and Desire. But today, is couple not living a crisis within the Church? This is our “Research Action” in Practical Theology. The first part is descriptive. Facing a “problem situation”, we question reality. The Word is given to married Christian couples. We listen to those who never get to speak in the Church usually. The problematic is: indeed there is a dichotomy between married Christian couples and their Church. They complain of not receiving gratitude, assuming no role as couples in consultations, decisions or orientations. The second part, which is analytical, confronts these results with Human and Theological Sciences. Human Sciences define the couple in the light of current societal values (research for intimacy, identity and self-fulfillment, equality between woman and man, personalized sexuality). This is source of tensions for Christian couples. Theological Sciences define the couple according to Christianity: Biblical, Ecclesial texts, and practices. We must admit that between Church discourses (ideal of the fine loving couple, image of Christ’s Love for his Church, in reference with the religious ideal) and the daily reality of the couples, the gap is widening which they live as a lack of consideration, a misunderstanding of their reality. The third part is practical and proposes a pastoral which displays the charisma of unity in the couple in order to live mutual recognition in the Church, brotherly love, a common mission for evangelization and a disciples’community of Christ, all, Children of the same Father. Our work wants to be a message of hope, an answer of a married Christian to questions of our time

Alexander Campbell, a contemporary of Joseph Smith, was the first to publish a critique of the Book of Mormon after actually having read it. Among other allegations, he arraigned that Joseph Smith wrote the book to resolve, with a voice of prophecy, theological issues contemporary to its publication. This study undertakes to examine Campbell's charge with regard to atonement doctrine. To assess the statement, this study first identifies the controversies about atonement doctrine in the years prior to the publication of the Book of Mormon, in the Northeastern region of the United States. It then compares the teachings inherent to those controversies to Book of Mormon atonement doctrine. This study concludes that the doctrine in the Book of Mormon does appear to resolve some of the controversies surrounding the doctrine of the atonement in the time and place relative to its publication. However, on other important points of controversy, it does not resolve the issues. Furthermore, as it expounds atonement doctrine, it combines concepts in ways not germane to its environment. It does not fit any model of soteriology that was prevalent in the time period and place of its original publication.

Said Nursî, né à la période de la première monarchie constitutionnelle et ayant assisté à la naissance de la République turque, tente d'adapter son discours religieux et politique aux exigences de la société ottomane et turque de l'époque. Ses activités sont implantées tant dans le domaine religieux que dans le domaine social et politique. Il réussit à fonder un mouvement après la création de la République qui non seulement a marqué l'histoire moderne de la Turquie républicaine, mais qui continue encore de se manifester à l'heure actuelle avec un dynamisme social à travers les "dershane", les maisons d'édition, les médias, les institutions et les organisations. Le mouvement nurcu, nurculuk, qui prétend être moderne en même temps que fidèle aux principes religieux, suscite un grand intérêt d'étude pour l'histoire de l'islam contemporain. Notre travail se donne pour objectif de détenniner le rapport de Said Nursî à son temps. En d'autres termes, il est question de savoir comment il adapte son discours, tant religieux que politique, à l'esprit de son temps : est-il moderne ou traditionnel? Qu'entend-il par « modernité »? Nous tentons de mettre en exergue les traits de sa démarche qui se revendique à la fois moderne et fidèle aux principes religieux du courant islamcl, renouveau ottoman attesté au début du XXe siècle, et plus précisément durant la seconde monarchie constitutionnelle
Said Nursî, born at the time of the First Constitutional Monarchy and having attended the advent of the Turkish Republic, tries ta adapt his religious and political speech ta the requirements of the Ottoman and Turkish society of the time. His activities are established as mueh in the religious field as in the social and political domain. He succeeded in founding a movement after the creation of the Republic which not only marked the modern history of republican Turkey, but which still continues to appear at the present time with a social dynamism through the dershane, publishing hou ses, media, institutions and organizations. The nurcu movement, nurculuk, which claims to be modern and faithful to the religious principles at the same time, arouses a great interest for studying the history of contemporary Islam. Our work aims to determine Said Nursî's relationship to his time. In other words, it is a matter of knowing how he adapts his speech, both religious and political, to the spirit of his time : is it modern or traditional? We try to put forward the features of his approach, which claims to be modern and, at the same time, faithful to the religious principles of the islamci current, the Ottoman revival attested at the beginning of the 20th. Century, and more precisely, of the Second Constitutional Monarchy

L’œuvre de Soren Kierkegaard (Copenhague 1813-1855) se construit autour des concepts clefs d’existence, de subjectivité et de vérité. Dans cette étude, nous nous intéresserons plus particulièrement à sa pensée des stades d’existence. Ils incarnent les différentes possibilités de vie s’offrant à l’individu. Exister revient toujours à se situer soit dans le stade esthétique, soit dans l’éthique, soit dans le religieux. Kierkegaard considère l’existence esthétique comme la plus éloignée de l’existence religieuse. Pourtant, malgré les différences qui les séparent, une certaine ambiguïté subsiste entre elles. C’est pourquoi, notre réflexion nous amènera à nous interroger plus précisément sur les rapports existant entre les stades esthétique et religieux, mais aussi sur les relations qu’entretient ce type de dialectique proprement existentielle avec le modèle hégélien de la dialectique spéculative
Soren Kierkegaard (Copenhaguen 1813-1855) work refers to a few concepts, the Existence, the Subjectivity and the Truth. In this work, we drew a particular attention to the stages of the Existence. They stand for the various possible life offered to an individual being. Thus, existing means belonging either to the aesthetic, the ethical or the religious stage. Kierkegaard considers that the aesthetic Existence differs the most from the religious one. However, despite their differences, the ambiguity somehow remains. Hence, we will question the relation between the aesthetic and the religious stages, as well as the relation of such a purely existencial dialectics with the speculative dialectics of the Hegelian model

AbstractThis chapter offers an overview of changes in Dutch perceptions of, and attitudes toward, same-sex sexuality and the part religion played in them. It discusses landmark events and publications from 1730—when “sodomy” became a public issue—until the present. It describes the evolution of discourse on same-sex sexuality, with special reference to the earliest publications on “homosexuality,” alias “Uranism,” which often referred to religion. In the twentieth century, Roman Catholic and Protestant opposition to homosexual emancipation gradually gave way to sympathy, and in the 1960s some pastors were vocal advocates of acceptance. In the early 1970s, homosexuality became a doctrinal issue, a religious identity marker. Polarization was exacerbated in the late 1970s, which saw the rise of both the gay and lesbian movement and religious fundamentalism. “Discursive associations” between religion—including Judaism and Islam—and homosexuality are brought to light partly by means of quantitative content analysis of newspapers.

AbstractIn the 2000s, European societies have transformed quickly due to the networked global economy, deepening a European integration process, forced and voluntary movement of people to and within Europe, and influence of social media on culture, communication, and society. Europe has become an increasingly diverse and pluricultural continent where many people simultaneously identify with multiple different cultural and social groups. In such “super-diversified” (Vertovec in New complexities of cohesion in Britain: Super-diversity, transnationalism and civil-integration, Communities and Local Government Publications, Wetherby, 2007) European societies diversity itself is broad, multidimensional, and fluid (Vertovec in New complexities of cohesion in Britain: Super-diversity, transnationalism and civil-integration, Communities and Local Government Publications, Wetherby, 2007; Blommaert and Rampton in Language and Superdiversity. Diversities 13(2):1–21, 2011). Different social locations and identities intersect within them—whether cultural, ethnic, national, social, religious, or linguistic. At the same time, however, European societies have faced the rise of diverse populist and radical right-wing movements promoting profoundly monoculturalist views and cultural purism. What are the means to confront this polarization of views and attitudes in Europe?

AbstractThis chapter presents the findings of an ongoing digital project of the Helsinki Computational History Group at Helsinki Centre for Digital Humanities (HELDIG) focused on the history of eighteenth-century book publication. The authors have created a historical-biographical database based on The English Short-Title Catalogue (ESTC), a standard source for analytical bibliographic research, and extracted a data-driven canon which considers changes over time, subject-topics, top-works, authors, publishers, publication place, and materiality. This chapter provides both methodological and historical insights into the development of print and demonstrates the huge analytical potential of harmonized metadata catalogs. While quantitative analyses of the book trade were attempted before, they did not engage with the complex process of canon formation at such a large scale. The authors’ work highlights the formative role played by publishers in this process and the epistemological shift started at the end of the seventeenth century, when religious works were increasingly replaced by literary works. As the authors argue, this shift in the production and consumption of print allowed for a reinvention of the canon during the eighteenth century.

Background: It has been suggested that interventions focusing on individual behaviour change, such as behavioural weight management interventions, may exacerbate health inequalities. These intervention-generated inequalities may occur at different stages, including intervention uptake, adherence and effectiveness. We conducted a systematic review to synthesise evidence on how different measures of inequality moderate the uptake of, adherence to and effectiveness of behavioural weight management interventions in adults. Methods: We updated a previous systematic literature review from the US Preventive Services Taskforce to identify trials of behavioural weight management interventions in adults that could be conducted in or recruited from primary care. Medline, Cochrane database (CENTRAL) and PsycINFO were searched. Only randomised controlled trials and cluster-randomised controlled trials were included. Two investigators independently screened articles for eligibility and conducted risk of bias assessment. We curated publication families for eligible trials. The PROGRESS-Plus acronym (place of residence, race/ethnicity, occupation, gender, religion, education, socioeconomic status, social capital, plus other discriminating factors) was used to consider a comprehensive range of health inequalities. Data on trial uptake, intervention adherence, weight change, and PROGRESS-Plus related-data were extracted. Results: Data extraction in currently underway. A total of 108 studies are included in the review. Data will be synthesised narratively and through the use of Harvest Plots. A Harvest plot for each PROGRESS-Plus criterion will be presented, showing whether each trial found a negative, positive or no health inequality gradient. We will also identify potential sources of unpublished original research data on these factors which can be synthesised through a future individual participant data meta- analysis. Conclusions and implications: The review findings will contribute towards the consideration of intervention-generated inequalities by researchers, policy makers and healthcare and public health practitioners. Authors of trials included in the completed systematic review may be invited to collaborate on a future IPD meta-analysis. PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020173242
