One result has been the increased outsourcing of activities and performance. This has heightened the role of suppliers ever more.Consequently, in order to maintain competitive in the market and to be able to satisfy the knowledgeable end customer, suppliers must be completely aligned with the core company and its objectives and performances. This goal is only gained through strategic benchmarking towards Supplier Development.With a large number of suppliers to deal with, it won’t be feasible to have partnership relationship with each. The strategic approach is to classify them in a manner suitable for the company and only then start from top of the list setting goals for the most prioritized.Before making any attempt in Supplier Relationship Development, the company must start from within setting the right mindset from top down, inside its own ground. Only then Supplier development will be aligned with the objectives of the company and the program will be integrated and successful.This research sought after ways to develop a strategic and systematic method of dealing with suppliers. This guideline was classified as a step by step map of a Supplier Development program. The study was conducted for Volvo Penta Vara Company, and as part of its Supply Chain Development Program. The findings from the company and literature were compared and analyzed and finally guidelines were developed.This report is the last part of the master’s studies in Industrial Engineering-Logistics at University of Borås. It gave us the opportunity to use what we had learnt during the programme. Considering the broadness of the subject we were after, this report meant a lot of work. However, this was the challenge we wanted and an intriguing journey where we learned a lot along the way.

Forgiveness is a construct that has captured the interest of researchers and practitioners across various fields, from philosophy to biology; however, defining and measuring forgiveness has been a challenge because of its complex nature. By drawing on relationships discovered in past studies, reviewing definitions across disciplines, and noting weaknesses in current forgiveness measures, the task of developing a broadly applicable forgiveness measure with strong theoretical and psychometric roots resulted in the creation of the General Measure of Forgiveness (GMF).
The GMF is a brief, Likert response questionnaire that is appropriate for both relationship and non-relationship transgressions; heretofore, there has not been an established measure for non-relationship trangressions. This study was an initial investigation into the psychometric properties of the GMF. In an online design, college participants (n=343) were administered the GMF along with an established interpersonal measure of forgiveness, the Enright Forgiveness Inventory (EFI: Enright & Rique, 2004), and other measures of theoretically related and unrelated constructs. For the forgiveness measures, participants completed the GMF and EFI (order counterbalanced) in response to the same self-generated relationship transgression, then completed the GMF in response to a self-generated non-relationship transgression.
Results supported the internal consistency of the GMF (Cronbachâ s alphas of .93 for both relationship and non-relationship forgiveness) and an exploratory factor analysis identified a primary factor accounting for about 30% of the total item variance. Convergent and discriminant validity analyses resulted in largely predicted relationships (e.g., r = .81 for GMFrelationship and EFI; r = .78 for GMFnon-relationship and a single-item assessment of forgiveness; r = -.26 for GMFrelationship and anger and aggression).
These results are encouraging as use of the GMF could open new areas of research in non-relationship forgiveness and enhance research and application of relationship forgiveness. Specifically, the GMF holds promise for improving research by providing a brief, non-proprietary, and broadly applicable measure of forgiveness. Broadly, the study suggests that a general measure of forgiveness is feasible.Master of Science

Decision making with the help of graphs has been applied for a long time. Previous to the introduction of computerized solutions, graphs and complementary pictures were hand drawn. With the introduction of computers came the colored and dynamic “animations” called simulations which are used today. The focal company of this study, Ångpanneföreningen AB, has during an extensive period of time constructed simulations of complex systems which they have used in order to satisfy specific needs of their customers in different areas. Depending on the complexity of the product and the needs it is ought to fulfill, the exchange of it will have a direct impact on the interactions carried out between the buying and selling parties in various ways. A question that this thesis looked to answer was how the utilization of simulations affects Ångpanneföreningen AB’s relationship with its customers. The purpose of this study is to describe how the use of a simulation program may affect the relation between two parties in a business relationship. A case study approach based on focused and semi-structural interviews has been used for this study.The effects of the use of simulations on a business relationship, in terms of benefits perceived, depend on the purpose set for the software. This meaning that it depends on whether the results and benefits are of such kind that they are possible to measure. However, if measurable, then the awareness of perceived benefits contributes to a stronger relationship since trust is likely to follow from met expectations. The simulation software offered by ÅF has the characteristics of both a product and a service with a highly technological nature. When dealing with simulations holding such attributes, a high level of exchanges is likely to be involved. Furthermore, interdependencies between two parties in a business relationship tend to develop as both the exchanges due to, and the complexities of, the simulation are of a high level, meaning that exchanges are needed in both directions.

The demands and challenges of early parenthood place adolescent mothers at high risk for developing adjustment difficulties. The current longitudinal study examined the types of relationships that Latina adolescent mothers have with their partners, based on the young mother's level of acculturation and enculturation. The study also examined positive (e.g., partner support, relationship satisfaction) and negative (e.g., relationship strain) aspects of romantic relationships that impact both relationship continuity and the adolescent mothers' psychological adjustment. One hundred and twenty five Latina adolescent mothers (M age=19.49 years; SD=1.34; of primarily Puerto Rican origin) who reported having a partner and their young children participated in this study at T1; one hundred and eight of these mothers returned for a second assessment 6 months later (T2). The majority of participants resided with their partners (70.4%) and approximately 42% of the young mothers were in relatively long-lasting (3 or more years) relationships with their partners. Around 19% of mothers were married, and marriage and co-residence with partner related to higher perceived instrumental support. Mothers' cultural orientation was related to characteristics of these relationships. Less acculturated mothers and mothers who were highly enculturated were more likely to be married and living with partners. The partners of more enculturated mothers were also more likely to be the child's biological father. Roughly 78% of participants who had a partner at T1 and returned for T2 reported the same partner at T2. Although a few demographic and relationship characteristics were related to continuity (e.g., co-residence and relationship with child's father, having Latino partners, and longer relationships), relationship satisfaction was the only unique predictor of continuity. In regard to associations with mother's psychological distress, non-tangible support, satisfaction, and strain at T1 related to distress at T2. However, strain was the only unique predictor of distress; satisfaction had a marginal effect. Importantly, the association between strain and distress was moderated by satisfaction, such that strain predicted more distress at low and medium levels of satisfaction, but not at higher levels of satisfaction. Results are discussed in light of Latino cultural values, developmental issues, and implications for intervention.

The age of onset for eating disorders (anorexia and bulimia nervosa) among females is typically late adolescence. In the present study, it was hypothesized that the onset of eating disorders is related to the late-adolescent developmental task of identity development. Thirty-three late adolescent and young adult females who met DSM-III-R criteria for an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorder not otherwise specified) and 33 control females completed the Extended Objective Measure of Ego Identity status -- 2 (EOMEIS-2). Results of chi square analyses revealed no significant differences between eating disorder and control females with regard to status of identity development. However, when identity status subscale scores were treated as continuous variables, several significant between-group mean differences emerged. In line with expectations, eating disorder subjects scored higher on ideological diffusion and moratorium, and they scored lower on ideological achievement. Eating disorder subjects also scored higher on interpersonal diffusion and lower on interpersonal achievement. In addition, there were significant correlations between ideological diffusion and measures of depression and anxiety. Unexpectedly, there were also significant correlations between ideological moratorium and measures of depression, anxiety, social alienation, family discord, and borderline personality symptomatology. The possible implications of these results for understanding frequently occurring, co-morbid symptoms in eating disorder subjects are discussed.

Background: The need to cut costs, save money, become profitable, be innovative, improve product quality and be responsive to customers’ demands is encouraging some organizations to form strategic relationships with suppliers. In achieving this, certain joint investments, called structural bonds, are developed within the relationship life-cycle. Although the bonds tend to tie down the partners and also create impediments for the termination of the relationship, they inevitably contribute to the achievement of mutual goals and sustaining competitive advantage. Past researches failed to relate the structural bonds’ development to any of the stages of the relationship life-cycle, which this study investigated. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate why and in which stages of a strategic buyer-supplier relationship are structural bonds initiated. Method: A multiple case study approach, involving four companies, was undertaken to achieve the purpose of this study. The method used in collecting the empirical data is in-depth interviews with purchasing employees of these companies: Lagermetall AB, Atlas Copco AB, SAAB Tech AB and Husqvarna AB. Results: Most of the structural bonds, based on this study, were introduced at the beginning of the relationships. Some of the reasons for introducing these bonds are: improved product quality, joint product development, knowledge transfer, innovation and communication. Though the bonds may be introduced by the more powerful organization in the relationship, there is interdependency in the relationship. The bonds influenced the following in the relationship: trust, commitment and cooperation, information sharing, and performance but also generated lock-in effects.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the relationships between greater adiposity and bone development during adolescence. Bone was evaluated from age 11 to 17 years in the Iowa Bone Development Study using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT). Body composition (fat and lean mass) was estimated by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).
The first research aim evaluated the associations between greater overall adiposity and subsequent maturation and bone strength in 135 girls and 123 boys. Greater adiposity was defined according to age 8 Body Mass Index (BMI) to categorize participants as overweight (OW) or healthy-weight (HW). Maturation was defined as the age of peak height velocity (PHV). Bone strength was assessed at the radius and tibia (bone strength index, BSI, and strength-strain index, SSI). Differences in bone strength between OW and HW were evaluated with sex-specific multi-level regression models to account for individual growth and correlation between repeated measurements. Analyses were adjusted for centered age (measurement visit age - grand mean age of cohort), change in fat mass, and limb length in Model 1, with additional adjustment for lean mass in Model 2. Analyses were repeated using biological age (visit age - age PHV). BMI was positively associated with age of maturation in girls and boys (p< 0.05). HW versus OW girls had significantly lower BSI and SSI at the radius and tibia (p< 0.05) in Model 1. Results remained significant except for radial BSI in Model 2. HW versus OW boys had significantly lower BSI and SSI (all p< 0.05) at the tibia, but not radius, in Model 1. Significant differences were sustained in Model 2. Analyses were repeated using biological age, which yielded similar results for boys, but reduced parameter estimates were observed in girls, with only tibial SSI significant in Model 2 (p< 0.05). These findings support a stronger role for greater adiposity in the occurrence of earlier maturation and greater bone strength in girls than boys while greater lean mass appeared to play a greater role in boys.
The second research aim evaluated associations between abdominal adiposity and bone in 132 girls and 122 boys. Visceral adipose tissue area (VAT, cm2) and subcutaneous adipose tissue area (SAT, cm2) were estimated from DXA scans. Sex-specific analyses evaluated the fat-bone relationship with growth models using biological age as the time variable adjusted for limb length and lean mass. There were no significant associations between bone parameters and VAT or SAT in girls. In boys, greater VAT was associated with lower trabecular bone density (tBMD) and BSI (all p< 0.05) at the tibia, but not radius. Greater VAT and SAT were associated with smaller cortical bone size and thickness (all p< 0.01) at the radius, but not tibia. Analyses limited to overweight participants showed VAT was negatively associated with periosteal circumference at the radius and tibia, cortical bone thickness at the tibia and SSI (all p< 0.05) at the radius in girls. In boys, the results were relatively unchanged for VAT, while SAT was only significantly associated with lower tBMD (p< 0.05) at the tibia. These results suggest the bone-fat relationship may vary depending on adiposity and bone site.
The third research aim evaluated the longitudinal association between intramuscular fat and cortical bone at the tibia from age 11 to 17 years in 153 girls and 143 boys. Muscle density (MD) was used to estimate intramuscular fat (IMF). Lower MD indicates greater IMF. The relationships between muscle density and cortical bone parameters were modeled using multi-level regression models adjusted for biological age, limb length and muscle cross-sectional area measured by pQCT. In the adjusted multi-level regression models, MD was positively associated with cortical bone parameters, but only reached statistical significance for BMD, bone mineral content (BMC), bone cross-sectional area, cortical thickness and SSI in girls, while only SSI was significant in boys (all p< 0.05). These results suggest that greater fat content within muscle may be harmful to weight-bearing cortical bone during adolescence.
In conclusion, findings from the first aim suggest there are sex- and site-specific differences in the relationship between adiposity and bone during adolescence. Findings from the second and third aims indicate these differences could be explained, in part, by the existence of specific fat depots (abdominal more so than intramuscular fat) that could be harmful to bone and that may be more apparent in boys due to a sex-specific fat distribution pattern that favors accumulation of abdominal rather than peripheral fat.

Business relationships are crucial for succeeding in the market for companies. Therefore, start-ups must focus on establishing business relationships early on, since these naturally do not exist for new players. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how start-ups work in order to establish business relationships. This will be analysed through six key elements from literature that are necessary for start-ups to consider in relationship marketing for surviving in the market, namely trust, commitment, communication, mutual benefits, long-term perspective, and customer service. The thesis uses a case study design, focused on a start-up in the sustainable materials industry, hereafter named “The Case Company”. Semi-structured deep interviews were conducted with representatives at the company. Results show that The Case Company does actions that can fit into all of the six elements to some degree. One extra finding was identified which is prioritization. While the importance of communication was stressed by all interviewees, a lack of strategy in the medium of communication was evident. We argue that this could be due to prioritization. Moreover, a lack of customer service strategy was the other consequence of having to prioritize other areas of the business as our findings suggests. Further research could validate these findings.

Marriage and relationship education (MRE) is most commonly delivered in a skills-based format that traditionally centers on teaching couples communication skills. Critiques against the current skills-development approach lead to the development and pilot-testing of an alternative self-development curriculum entitled, “Strengthen Yourself, Strengthen Your Relationships.” Guided by Bowen’s (1978) theory of differentiation, the current study randomly assigned forty couples to the self-development (differentiation) curriculum condition or to a relationship assessment plus feedback condition. Repeated measures ANOVA’s, independent samples t-tests, and regressions were used to analyze the data from pre- to post-test (5 weeks), post-test to follow-up (4 weeks), and pre-test to follow-up (9 weeks). Statistical analyses indicate that women responded more favorably to the feedback condition in terms of differentiation, relationship self-regulation, and problem solving, whereas men responded more favorably to the curriculum condition in terms of relationship self-regulation. Feedback about the curriculum was gathered from participants and was received favorably. Implications from the study suggest that both approaches may have unique value for couples receiving relationship education. Future research should further develop and evaluate the self-development approach in MRE.

Citizenship – commitment to and participation in a political community - is the heart of constitutional democracy and a free society. Knowledge of the rights, responsibilities, and privileges are the electrical impulses that keep a steady beat. Without the participation of educated citizens, a democratic republic can not and does not function. This study analyzed the relationship between adolescent behavior and civic engagement. This task was accomplished by examining the amount of civic knowledge possessed by two groups within a population. The population examined, a high school in Flagler County, was composed of "at risk" students (those who had an Individualized Education Plan) and "regular" students (those that did not). The study uncovered the message that the amount of civic knowledge possessed by American youth was not as important as it was for them to be engaged in extracurricular activities. During the course of time, educators appear to have restricted their own ability to plan for and provide learning experiences that take in to consideration the physical characteristics; physical needs; patterns of growth and maturation; physiological changes; intellectual development; intellectual characteristics; learning preferences and styles; emotional development; personality development; and social development of each and every young adolescent attending school. When interesting, affordable activities are not made available, students become bored and get in to trouble during after school hours. Adolescent behaviors such as moral judgment and risk taking (or lack thereof) affect their decision to become civically involved.Ed.D.

This study examined links between adolescent depressive symptoms, actual pubertal development, perceived pubertal timing relative to one’s peers, adolescent-maternal relationship satisfaction, and couple sexual behavior. Assessments of these variables were made on each couple member separately and then these variables were used to predict the sexual activity of the couple. Participants were drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health; Bearman et al., 1997; Udry, 1997) data set (N = 20,088; aged 12-18 years). Dimensions of adolescent romantic experiences using the total sample were described and then a subsample of romantically paired adolescents (n = 1,252) were used to test a risk and protective model for predicting couple sexual behavior using the factors noted above. Relevant measures from the Wave 1 Add Health measures were used. Most of the items used in Add Health to assess romantic relationship experiences, adolescent depressive symptoms, pubertal development (actual and perceived), adolescent-maternal relationship satisfaction, and couple sexual behavior were drawn from other national surveys or from scales with well documented psychometric properties. Results demonstrated that romantic relationships are part of most adolescents’ lives and that adolescents’ experiences with these relationships differ markedly by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Further, each respective couple member’s pubertal development, perceived pubertal timing, and maternal relationship satisfaction were useful in predicting sexual risk-promoting and risk-reducing behaviors in adolescent romantic couples. Findings in this dissertation represent an initial step toward evaluating explanatory models of adolescent couple sexual behavior.

Many studies have examined the relationship between a child’s temperament and its effect on his or her early language development. However, few studies have investigated the detrimental effects a child’s negative affectivity may have on their language development and potential ways these effects may be limited through parental behaviors. The current study aimed to investigate if physical or verbal maternal scaffolding behaviors moderated the effect negative affect has on language development. Although it was expected that maternal encouragement of physical activity would play a moderating role in the relationship between temperament and language development, no such relationship was found. One explanation for these findings is the operationalization of maternal scaffolding behaviors in the present study; previous studies have also included instances of emotional and motivational scaffolding. Future efforts should aim to incorporate a broader range of potential scaffolding behaviors in their coding protocols.

This research examined the relationship between substance use and identity variables. The sample consisted of 76 students undergraduate psychology students. Relationships were found between identity variables and both alcohol and marijuana usage. People with a foreclosed identity status tended to have the lowest rates of substance use, while people in the moratorium identity status tended to have the highest rates. The hypotheses that identity variables would predict substance usage above and beyond psychological adjustment, and that identity distress symptoms would predict substance use beyond other identity development variables alone, was mostly not confirmed. The strongest and most consistent predictor of substance use was age. Possible reasons for this relationship are discussed, and calls for further research into this as well as other mediators and moderators of the relationship between identity and substance use are suggested.B.S.

Per fare questo si è posto due obiettivi principali: il primo di esplorare la letteratura sul talento nello sport per identificare quelle teorie che meglio potessero rispecchiare l'approccio psicosociale. Il secondo obiettivo è stato quello di studiare empiricamente come le relazioni impattano sul benessere psicologico dei giovani atleti, ipotizzando che esso si possa considerare una condizione particolarmente favorevole per lo sviluppo del potenziale. La ricerca condotta non solo ha identificato con successo una serie di teorie che sostengono l'utilizzo dell'approccio psicosociale allo sviluppo del talento, ma ha anche dimostrato come migliori relazioni, mediate da una serie di variabili psicologiche individuali, vadano ad influenzare positivamente il benessere psicologico di giovani calciatori, e quindi secondo l'ipotesi del lavoro, il loro efficace sviluppo come atleti.the work explored talent development in sport following a psychosocial approach. It has two main aims: the first was to explore literature on talent development in sport to identify theories that better support psychosocial approach to talent development. the second aim was to study empirically how relationship impact on psychological wellbeing of young talented athletes, hypotesizing that it describes a particularly effective ground breaking condition for the development of potentiality. Research finds support for psychosocial approach to talent development in many theories on talent development, and next to this it also show how having positive relationship impact on psychological wellbeing thanks to the mediation effect of psychological characteristics and consequently of athletes' potential.

This thesis describes an investigation into the effect of maternal psychopathology on infants' mental and psychomotor development. Part one systematically reviews the literature, which considers the effect of maternal psychopathology on infants' mental and psychomotor development in the first two years of life. It concludes that this relationship is likely to be mediated by other variables and future research should explore this relationship further. Part two is an empirical paper that describes an investigation of the relationship between maternal psychopathology and infants' mental and psychomotor development and the potential mediating variables of socioeconomic factors and maternal Emotional Availability. This thesis was linked to Wain's (2010) research and built on the work of Gale (2009). Part three is a critical appraisal that discusses methodological issues and personal reflections on conducting the research.

This dissertation investigates how mineral resource exploitation intersects with development in Zambia. The main objective is to understand mining contributions to local community development and how these vary according to gender. The study draws empirical insights from Munali nickel mine in the Mazabuka district of Southern Zambia. Findings suggest that the relationship between mineral resource exploitation and development in Zambia has been restructured mainly due to neoliberal political-economic policies of the 1990s. One key outcome is that mining-led development in rural communities was seriously undermined. The research finds that mining-led development benefits men more than women due to the gender relations in the mining sector. Mining is traditionally considered a macho activity, which puts men at an advantage. The dissertation carries the argument that the implementation of IMF and World Bank-sponsored neoliberal political-economic policies compromised mining-led development in Zambia. A focus on neoliberal policies and ensuing privatisation made the country lose the development contributions which mines were making, especially in local mining communities. The subsequent introduction of development agreements did little to improve the situation. In fact, they worsened policy directions, with the country oscillating between tight mining regimes to relaxed ones. One outcome has been uncertainty in mines’ role in the development process, leading to limited benefits to Zambia’s mining communities. Overall, countries such as Zambia, where there is high dependency on mineral resource exploitation for economic growth, prioritising optimal taxation benefits tends to undermine mineral resource-led development, particularly in mining communities.Dissertation (MSocSci)--University of Pretoria, 2017.

The research reported in this thesis examined the relationship between beginning spelling and reading. More specifically, it focussed on the relationship between the development of early reading and spelling in a context where the approach to early reading instruction includes systematic phonological awareness and decoding instruction. A critical assumption made by proponents of developmental early literacy models is that transfer of skills and knowledge from reading to spelling will occur spontaneously and without formal instruction (Frith, 1980). By contrast instruction-centred approaches make the assumption that there are critical pre-requisite skills that can and should be taught explicitly (Carnine, Silbert & Kameenui, 1997). The difference between these approaches is highlighted in the treatment of invented spelling, a popular activity in Western Australian junior primary classes. A series of studies was undertaken to examine the effect on invented and standard spelling performance of teaching Year 1 children phonological awareness and the strategy of sounding out words. Data were gathered from a range of settings using different research tools. The relationship between phonological awareness and beginning reading and spelling performance was explored initially through a single case study. A post-hoc study was then undertaken with a cohort of students who had received systematic decoding instruction to examine whether proficiency in the decoding of nonwords was related to spelling performance. This permitted an analysis of common sub-skills of decoding and encoding. In the main study the effect on different aspects of reading and spelling performance of using Let's Decode, an approach that includes explicit phonological awareness and systematic decoding instruction, was investigated. In addition, an analysis was made of whether students who received explicit instruction in skills known to contribute to beginning reading and spelling produced superior invented spelling samples. A qualitative analysis was made of the. pre and post invented spelling tests of two pairs of students from the control and intervention groups matched on invented spelling and phonological awareness skills at the beginning of the year, and re tested at the end of Year 1. The final research question involved a single-subject research design to examine the effect of explicit instruction in isolating phonemes in words and prompts to 'listen for sounds' prior to, and during, the process of spelling words. The single case study revealed a child who was regarded as a competent speller and reader but who could only read words in a familiar context and who had developed a strategy for spelling words based on copying an adult model. This was interpreted as evidence supporting the need for phonological awareness instruction as a pre-requisite for spelling. The post-hoc analysis of a class of students who had received systematic decoding instruction showed that no student classified as a 'good decoder' could also be classified as a 'poor speller'. This result was considered evidence of a strong link between the phonological knowledge that is required to decode and the role of alphabetic knowledge in spelling. The main study revealed phonological awareness and systematic decoding instruction was associated with superior invented and conventional spelling and reading performance on all reading and spelling measures. Of particular importance was the finding that students who commenced the study with very weak phonological awareness and who subsequently received systematic phonological and decoding instruction showed greater gains in invented spelling than matched students in the control condition. The single subject design showed the effectiveness of phonological awareness individualised instruction on invented spelling for weak students from both intervention and control conditions. It was concluded that the ability to invent spelling is improved when students receive explicit instruction in phonological awareness and systematic decoding but that some students, namely those with persistent weakness in phonological awareness, also require explicit prompts to apply their alphabetic knowledge to spelling words. The implications for instruction of these findings are discussed.

Academics and financial media are divided on whether the size of assets under management (AUM) influences returns. In an attempt to seek clarity in the local context, this study investigates the effect of the size of assets under management on alpha in South African equity mutual funds over the three-year period to 31 December 2015. The study is based on secondary quantitative data reported on the Bloomberg Professional service database that includes mutual fund and benchmark indices, unit prices and fund asset sizes. The research sample comprises 69 South African equity mutual funds that existed for the three-year period under review. In this study, the relationship between AUM size and alpha is examined using the cross-sectional regression approach. No evidence of a linear relationship between AUM size and alpha was observed in the analysis based on the sample data. This finding is consistent with the semi-strong form efficient market hypothesis that securities reflect publicly available information. This finding implies that the exponential growth in AUM experienced in South Africa over the past two decades has neither enhanced nor come at the cost of returns. There does not seem to be a size effect that new investors and fund managers should be aware of.

This study investigated the relationship between the character typology proposed by C. G. Jung, and the stages of cognitive-moral development described by Lawrence Kohlberg. It was hypothesized that certain character types, particularly those preferring introversion and intuition, would display the higher levels of moral development. A total of 120 male and female introductory psychology students at the University of Arizona were administered the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) to assess character type, the Sociomoral Reflection Objective Measure (SROM) to identify stage of moral development, and the Shipley-Hartford Institute of Living Scale as a brief estimate of IQ. The only significant differences in moral development as a function of character type were between the judging and perceiving types, with perceiving types displaying the higher mean SROM score (p .02). This finding suggests that open-mindedness is more conducive to moral development than the tendency to jump to immediate conclusions.

The presence of both narcissism and social capital in the digital social networking site Facebook is altering the dynamic of relationship development. Therefore, the central research question directing this study is as follows: What role do narcissistic personality traits play in bridging social capital on Facebook? From this, two sub-questions are raised: 1) What are the motives for users to express narcissistic traits through Facebook? 2) How is narcissistic-motivated activity influencing social capital development through Facebook? Guiding this thesis are concepts of social tie relationships (as they apply to narcissism), and digital social networks. An exploratory study of in-depth interviews was utilized to conduct such research. A key objective in this thesis is understanding motive and purpose for generating social capital in an online environment. The findings from this study suggest Facebook is a facilitator for the expression of narcissistic traits. As a result, this is influencing the disconnected and questionable value of digital social capital.

Leaders of a rural Southwest Oklahoma hospital requested the development of an evidence-based program that could transform unit charge nurses into effective leaders in order to improve the leadership of direct care nurses. Nursing executive leadership discovered staff members were demonstrating high levels of stress, dissatisfaction, and burnout. Press-Ganey survey results revealed that staff felt they were not supported and did not believe nurses cared for patients' or other co-workers' well-being or safety. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems outcome scores, which were below hospital and national desired benchmarks, revealed that patients were not satisfied with the care they received. Thus, the goal of this project was to use evidence to craft a program and evaluation plan that could be used by the hospital to develop stronger charge nurse leaders. A detailed examination of evidence supported the development of a program based on the relationship-based care (RBC) model. The RBC model is a transformational leadership development program that increases leadership skills and positive interaction between people. A full program was adapted from the RBC model and designed for the rural hospital. An evaluation plan to measure the short-and long-term objectives was developed. Implementation is expected to create social change by imparting charge nurses with leadership and relationship skills, thus empowering them with greater abilities to provide care. Benner's novice to expert and Watson's theory of caring models served as the foundation of the RBC model. The goal is to present the results at the hospital level and to disseminate the findings locally at professional nursing leadership conferences.

Context and Objectives: There is an increasing recognition that there is great potential in utilizing learning in client relationships as this can enable service providers to develop relational capabilities and more successfully manage relationships. Building on this premise, the present study argues that learning in relationships relates to the ability to learn from the local context to leverage relationship success. To do this, requires an understanding of what drives success in each stage of relationship development and how this can be achieved to ensure success. The aim of the research is to explore the potential for learning in business service relationships, through the exploration of learning needs relevant in stages of relationship development. Learning needs are defined as what service providers need to learn about how to leverage successful relationships at each stage of development. Research Methodology: The study employs two qualitative case studies of business service providers that provide contextually differing embedding conditions for relationships and learning. Data has been gathered through interviews with individual service providers, observation of practice and organisational documentation. The research undertaken explores service providers’ approach towards relationship development, with the aim of identifying critical factors influencing success in each relationship stage and corresponding opportunities for learning through the experiences and challenges faced by service providers in practice. Findings: Results highlights that learning from the local context is critical for managing relationship success. Critical success factors for each stage are identified from the experiences and challenges faced by service providers across the two cases. These are translated into learning needs for each stage that aim to guide service providers’ attempts to learn from the local context in order to inform and adapt their approach. The appreciation of learning needs in relation to the unique context of each organisation directs attention to corresponding guidelines for practice. The research concludes with the proposition of a theoretical model for learning in relationships as well as a practical learning needs framework that can be incorporated in service providers’ practices for managing client relationships. Importantly results suggest that becoming relationally capable requires a transition to embracing a learning orientation in terms of both philosophy and process. Research Relevance and Implications: The study extends the potential for the creation of a relational capability in business relationships through the exploration of learning needs. Findings suggest that relationship management can be viewed as a cyclical process of learning and adaptation where success at each stage rests on the ability to read and learn from the local context and engage in appropriate actions in practice. The study contributes towards practice, by providing a practical framework through which service providers can develop relational learning. Exploration and appreciation of learning needs in stages of relationship development can aid service providers in the establishment of appropriate approaches towards intervention or stimulation of relationship success.

Relationship Marketing is relatively unknown in construction, but is widely researched in non project disciplines and applied similarly. Relationship marketing as a sub-component of marketing provides valuable and reliable tools that a manager can use to enhance a service that is being provided to a range of clients. It provides a better solution to client interaction than traditional marketing due to its focus on mutual attainment of common goals. The purpose of relationship marketing is to attract new clients and ensure that existing clients are looked after in a collaborative engagement where objectives are identified and mutual goals set. Overall collective aims of venture participants are identified and achieved. The aim of the research is to identify key relationship factors that should be considered when selecting a construction service. This is achieved through a number of steps that include: examining the principles of marketing and its association with RM; examining alliance principles and construction RM principles, supply chain and service selection issues and relationship development constructs; interviewing a number of construction actors to theorise issues that are important to construction, its connections and relationships. Other activities include interviewing a substantial body of construction actors that have experience of Alliance projects and are able to comment on the relationship development process and observe activities undertaken at a number of alliance development and alliance lessons learned (outcome) workshops. The research identifies methods that enable relationships to be developed and a model that gives buyers the ability to pre-qualify and select contractors that are committed to providing value is provided. The main findings from the research show that RM has many attributes that should be applied to construction; indeed several aspects of RM are currently being applied in alliance projects. The particular form that RM takes in alliance projects is in the relationship development of the stakeholders. These stakeholders eventually become the virtual team who manage the project. In particular the development of trust, commitment and mutual goals in alliance projects form a close parallel with similar constructs in RM. Four themes were discovered to make a difference in relationship development in construction. They were the process of the relationship development workshop; the underlying attributes associated with the development process, in particular trust, trust building, commitment and communication; the outcome for the team; and organisational issues associated with individuals in the relationship development workshops. The particular contribution that the research identifies is in the various models of relationship development that have been constructed throughout the research period. The first, an interim model, identifies a marketing continuum that forms a framework and provides an insight into the ways in which RM may reduce stress and reasons for conflict in a construction project team. At the same time the model shows how increased trust, commitment and satisfaction for the stakeholders, together with value adding potential in the supply chain, may be attained with the use and application of RM principles. The second interim model builds on the first model and applies an organisational focus to the original project based model described earlier. Ongoing relationships based on project success are identified. A third and final interim model identifies the association between process (project) and product success with transactional and relationship marketing. The model identifies how a RM approach provides a long term project success that may be translated to marketing success in a particular industry sector through ongoing relationships. Finally, building on the aforementioned interim models a construction relationship development model is proposed. It is suggested that these models develop and contribute to emerging theory on RM in a project environment and its application to construction. The models also contribute to relationship development theory applied to project driven and temporary organisations. These temporary organisations are particular to the construction industry and they stand to benefit greatly from this research.

JonesPurpose: The purpose of this study was to define, develop, and psychometrically evaluate a scale designed to measure Nurse’s Perception of the Relationship Based Care Environment. Background: Relationship is a complex multidimensional concept. It is a critical component of professional practice and core to the interaction between nurse and patient. While there are a number of scales available to measure different dimensions of relationships between nurses and other groups there is no one scale that captures multiple dimensions. Methods: Based on a review of the literature and an earlier qualitative study, a theoretical representation was developed. This representation became the framework for development of elements and items for the NPRBCE scale. The content validity of the NPRBCE scale was determined by an expert panel of Registered Nurses. Four hundred and seventy three Registered Nurse participants completed the survey. Analysis: Data were subjected to Principal Components Analysis and Cronbach’s alpha was computed to determine reliability of the scale as a whole and each of the components of the scale. Results: The final solution was a five component 56-item scale. The five components include: nurse/ other discipline; nurse/organization; nurse/ nurse; nurse/ patient- knowing the patient; and nurse/patient-respecting the patient. The scale as a whole and each of the resulting components were found to be reliable. The components were parsimonious and interpretable. This study developed and tested a new typology for use in Marriage and Family Therapy. The typology was created by integrating two already established typologies currently in use in MFT, the attachment style typology and the Enneagram typology. The attachment typology is based on attachment theory, a theory of human development that focuses on how infants and adults establish, monitor and repair attachment bonds. Differences in attachment style are associated with different kinds of relationship problems. The Enneagram typology categorizes people according to differences in attention processes. These differences in attention processes are also associated with different kinds of relationship problems, but also with different kinds of spiritual problems and talents. Support was found for both the internal and external validity of the integrated typology. The results were discussed in terms of relationship satisfaction and attachment based therapy. Implications for using the integrated typology to address spirituality in MFT were also discussed.Ph. D.

Recent studies have shown significant improvements in the attachment security of adult therapy clients during therapy, supporting Bowlby's theory that such improvement can be influenced by secure-base caregiving provided by mentors such as therapists. However, because these studies did not measure the secure-base variable, its relationship to client attachment development remains unknown. The present study is the first to evaluate that relationship by measuring clients' pre and posttherapy attachment security using the Relationship Scales Questionnaire and therapists' secure-base caregiving using the Client Attachment to Therapist and Working Alliance Inventory, Short Form. Of 21 initially insecure client participants, 17 experienced high levels of secure-base caregiving from their therapists (the SBC-High group) while 4 experienced low levels (the SBC-Low group). Comparison of pre and posttherapy group mean attachment scores, using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, found a statistically significant improvement (a = .01) in attachment security for the SBC-High group with no statistical change in attachment security for the SBC-Low group. These findings suggest that therapists and other mentors can positively influence the attachment development of their insecure mentees. Purposeful incorporation of this knowledge into the design and goals of existing graduate and professional mentoring programs can positively influence regenerative social change by promoting the attachment security of approximately one third of mentees expected to be insecurely attached, based on demographic studies. Improving their attachments can equip them to positively influence the attachments of all their future insecure clients who, like them, might then realize the multiple benefits associated with attachment security.

An increased focus on school readiness in recent years has placed more attention on the importance of quality early care and education settings for children ages 3 to 5 years. The first five years of a child’s life represent a crucial period for development, and care settings impact children’s outcomes in a variety of domains. Preparation of teachers in order to provide a high-quality level of care that supports positive outcomes for children is critical. This report assesses the current state of the literature on effective professional development for early childhood professionals (primarily those working center-based settings with children ages 3 to 5 years), specifically as it relates to improved outcomes for children in the areas of social-emotional competence and language and literacy development. Methods for adult learning are also reviewed and recommendations for appropriate models of professional development based upon this review are provided. It is recommended that specific aspects within models of professional development be reviewed further to determine more concrete predictors in terms of what is effective for adult learning and application of concepts. It also is recommended that early care and education providers take part in professional development activities that have an added level of support and feedback, such as coaching, to assist in improving instructional practices to impact developmental outcomes in targeted areas, such as literacy.

Over several centuries, mining activities have resulted in the creation of varied environmental complications. Most mining activities are carried out in locations with proximity to human settlements. The interplay of mining activity and society has created several mining-related conflicts throughout the world, and in developing countries especially, these conflicts are much prevalent. These conflicts could be analysed in a variety of ways: analyzing the conflicts based on goals, interests and value interference; or on the bases of issues related to interaction between two or more parties. This paper takes into consideration the two concepts of constructivity and destructivity of conflicts as they relate to natural resource management and indicate that it is possible for a country or society like Ghana to discover constructive potential in a phenomenon that is mostly deemed destructive. The conflict situations in two mining communities (Akyem and Wassa) are taken into consideration for this paper. This does not deal with issues of conflict management, rather, it takes a look into the interaction between these communities and the associated mining company to determine whether the relationship between them possess constructive or destructive potentials. Based on interviews and information available on the internet, this paper determines that there exist elements of constructivity and destructivity in both areas. In the Akyem area, the destructive aspects reside in the relationship between Newmont and the Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM). The relationship between Newmont and the local representatives take on a constructive aspect. Even though there is some sort of tension between the local people and Newmont, the situation can still be considered as constructive because they are still able to engage in dialogue in an attempt to coexist. In the Wassa area on the other hand, the story is different thus taken a destructive nature between Golden Star Resources and the communities. The involvement of the government however presents an opportunity for constructivity in the situation.

Over the past two decades society has become more aware of the prevalence and impact
of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). While society has become more aware of this problem, there
is still much that remains unknown. This is evident especially in regard to the effects of CSA on
adult males. There are several reasons for this; one such reason is that males who come to
therapy are rarely asked about sexual abuse histories. However, the effects of CSA are often
quite severe for males. One area particularly affected is adult close relationships. Attachment
theory offers a way to conceptualize how people interact in close relationships. In this study, the
influence of CSA on adult male relationships was examined. Seven hypotheses examined were
that males who were abused by a male, males who were abused for a longer period of time,
males who were abused at an earlier age, males who perceived little support from their family
with regards to the abuse, males who were abused by a family member, males who were abused
more frequently, and males who were abuse more severely would be more likely to have an
insecure attachment than other males. These CSA characteristics were measured by the
Childhood Sexual Experiences Questionnaire and the Adult Attachment Questionnaire (AAQ).
Although limitations to this study make it difficult to reject the null hypothesis and to make
statements that these results reflect the population, findings generally confirm the stated
hypotheses.

This paper studies the effects of an early phonological delay on later metaphonological abilities, a hypothesised link generally neglected by other researchers. It also examines current definitions of metaphonology, and describes a rigorously controlled set of tasks devised to test phonological awareness. The study was limited to three subjects: two with a history of phonological delay, and one a typically developing control. The subjects were given rhyme and alliteration tasks that varied on early patterns of acquisition and the number of phonemes shared by the stimulus and the distractor items. The small number of subjects permitted a comprehensive analysis of results which indicated that residual, but non-overt, phonological processes had an effect on tasks requiring phonological manipulations. A further finding of the study was that several other factors, such as memory, attention, and the nature of the stimuli also affected performance. An analysis of test behaviours and strategies suggested that performance scores may be misleading when assessing ability. Response time, and problem solving strategies employed by subjects are also useful indicators of facility. In addition, subjects may not be performing the type of analysis that is assumed by researchers. Task analysis reveals that there may be more than one way to reach a solution, while subject behaviour suggests that children make use of the largest phonological units available to them to complete a task.Medicine, Faculty of

This thesis weaves together disparate sources of theoretical knowledge with the lived experience of 11 women to illuminate the mysterious world of pre-natal relating - the foundation for postnatal life and the beginnings of the capacity to love. Love and supportive relationships can ameliorate stress and trauma post-birth, but do they operate prenatally, and if so how? This research clearly shows that mothers relate to their preborns and from the rich detail of their stories, the author proposes a schema that captures the complexity and changing nature of prenatal relating. The basic physiological and neurological structures are formed from conception, making the preborn vulnerable to the effects of direct and maternal experience. Preborns have extensive capacities that include the potential for interaction. These capacities and experiences affect infant development post birth. This evidence supports the author's initial hypothesis that prenatal stress is a significant factor in the attentional and behavioural problems of childhood, and challenges purely genetic explanations. 'Normal' life events have greater potency during pregnancy, making the transition to parenthood stressful even for many women in low risk situations. Feeling supported is essential for the health and well-being of the mother and preborn. This thesis reports a phenomenological and prospective study of 11 pregnant women as they lived the prenatal journey. From the interviews, it describes the development of the prenatal relationship and the range of stressful and supportive factors that should be considered in the creation of child and family friendly communities.Master of Science (Hons)

The primary purpose of the study was to examine and analyze high school athletic participation with regard to the achievement of developmental tasks as described by A. W. Chickering and measured through the administration of the Student Developmental Task Inventory, Revised, Second Edition. The investigation was designed to determine whether there was a statistically significant relationship among the developmental factors of athletes, both male and female, and non-athletes, both male and female.In order to complete the study, demographic data was collected from the participating students at the same time as the measurement through the SDTI-2. All information was prepared for computer analysis and all data were computer analyzed. Eight null hypotheses were tested by using the commercial package, Statistical Package for Social Studies (SPSS X)> The 0.05 level of significance was established as the critical probability level for rejection of hypotheses.Conclusions Athletes vs. Non-AthletesWith regard to Developing Autonomy, Developing Purpose, and Developing Mature Interpersonal Relations there is no statistically significant difference in either the male or the female groups.The self reported grade averages were found to be significant for both the male athlete and the female athlete when compared to the non-athletes. Males vs. FemalesWith regard to Developing Autonomy, Developing Purpose, and Developing Mature Interpersonal Relations there is no significant difference in the areas of Developing Autonomy and Developing Purpose. There is a significance at the .04 level for females in the Developing Mature Interpersonal Relations.When considering the athletes only with regard to the developmental tasks, there is no statistically significant difference in the male athletes and the female athletes.The number of sports of participation for the male athletes and the female athletes was also not found to be a significant difference with regard to the three developmental tasks.

How do precursor cells know when it is time to stop dividing and differentiate? The phenomenon of lineage-specific progenitor cells undergoing a limited period of proliferation prior to terminal differentiation is a common theme in multicellular development. Despite this, little is understood about how these two events are co-ordinated during the normal schedule of development. I have studied the question of how proliferation and differentiation are co-regulated in the oligodendrocyte lineage in the rodent optic nerve. Oligodendrocytes are post-mitotic cells that myelinate axons in the vertebrate central nervous system. They develop from precursor cells whose maturation is controlled by a timer, which is an intrinsic property of the cells, that limits proliferation. The timer seems not to control the number of divisions the cell can undergo but rather the length of time during which divisions can occur. Significant effort has been devoted to understanding how the intracellular timer regulates oligodendrocyte development. The timer consists of two components that are modulated by distinct kinds of extracellular signals. Mitogens drive a timing component whose value increases as precursor cells continue to divide. Once this value exceeds a critical threshold, it signals that the proliferative period has elapsed, and hydrophobic signalling molecules trigger an effector component that elicits cell-cycle arrest and differentiation. The value of the timing component is determined by several intracellular molecules whose activities change as the timer runs. One of these molecules is the cell-cycle inhibitor p27: it accumulates in oligodendrocyte precursor cells as they proliferate in culture. When p27 expression is high the precursor cells are more likely to stop dividing and differentiate than when it is low. In oligodendrocyte precursor cells derived from mice that lack p27, the timer runs aberrantly and cell-cycle arrest and terminal differentiation are delayed. It is not understood how the molecular mechanics of the timer control oligodendrocyte development. Does the timer serve to arrest the cell-cycle, with differentiation following by default, or is cell-cycle arrest subordinate to the programme of terminal differentiation? These questions remain unanswered, largely because of a persistent inability to experimentally manipulate the genome of oligodendrocyte precursor cells. The present study was an attempt to overcome these problems and had two aims - first, to devise a reliable system for transfecting oligodendrocyte precursor cells and second, to determine whether the timer primarily controls the timing of cell-cycle arrest. I developed a new retroviral vector that co-expresses p27 and green fluorescent protein (GFP) in precursor cells. The use of GFP allows the identification of living precursor cells that over-express p27, which can then be followed over many days in culture. My findings support previous work showing that p27 plays a role in governing the timing of oligodendrocyte differentiation. They show that over-expression of p27 promotes oligodendrocyte differentiation by advancing the value of the timing component, although it does not promote differentiation if the effector component is inoperative. The cell-cycle time of precursor cells that over-express p27 is dramatically extended, but not stopped. It appears that a firm cell-cycle arrest and entry into a quiescent state may be required to elicit terminal differentiation.

This thesis examines mentor-child relationships in youth mentoring. The literature review (Part 1) summarises and critically evaluates studies of youth mentoring that include a measure of relationship quality, focusing on how quality was assessed and links to outcomes. The empirical paper (Part 2) is a qualitative study examining the development of mentor-child relationships during the first six months; in particular, what facilitates engagement and what is challenging. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven mentor-mentee pairs, and their respective caseworkers, from a single mentoring organisation and analysed using thematic analysis. Finally, the critical appraisal (Part 3) discusses a number of key areas of the research process; conducting semi-structured interviews; interviewing children; transcription of interview data; thematic analysis and conducting ‘real world’ research. In addition, some personal reflections are offered.

The purpose of this research was to explore the relationship of the use of service learning in teaching and selected dimensions of college student development. The research was guided by the question, "To what extent do three levels of experience in community service, including participation with and without reflection about the service and no participation, affect students' sense of civic or citizenship responsibilities, respect for diversity, development of skills, and knowledge of self?"
A pretest/posttest design was employed to measure the four dimensions of growth associated with participation in community service learning experiences. The sample was 116 students enrolled at James Madison University and Radford University. Data from the pretest and posttest was analyzed by ANOVA procedures that allowed examination by gender, race, and previous volunteer experience. Additionally, qualitative data were collected from student journal entries that displayed reflections of the students about their service learning experiences. These entries were guided by predetermined questions about written scenarios concerning service and volunteerism.
The results indicated the pretest/posttest instrument reliability was in the average to low range. The subsequent analysis found no significant differences in the scores of the students on the pretest/posttest. However, there was a significant difference between the scores of men and women on both the pretest and posttest. The students' reflections in the journal entries provided many examples of student development on the four dimensions of growth. It was concluded from this examination that service learning with reflection had contributed to student development. This was inferred from both the number and quality of the student statements. The students believed the service learning experience had facilitated an increasing appreciation for diversity, the development of additional skills, and a greater awareness of self. The fourth dimension, civic awareness, was displayed by many students before they began the service learning experience, and it was harder to evaluate change on this dimension as a result of the six week experience.
Additional research was suggested to refine the pretest instrument and to focus on longer service learning experiences. Findings from this research should be useful to educators interested in service learning in their instruction and provide guidance on the important role of reflection in the experience.Ph. D.

The aim of our work was to study the vagosympathetic correlation in the development of myopic refraction in students. Materials and methods of research: In this regard, was conducted a research of visual acuity for distance (if necessary, vision correction was carried out) in medical students of the 2nd course using the Golovin-Sivtsev tables. With the increasing importance of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), there have been substantial studies on this issue, both empirically and theoretically. However, most existing studies focus on either the impacts of FDI presence or the determinants of FDI inflows, ignoring the fact that inward FDI and economic development may simultaneously affect each other. This thesis sets out to examine the interactive effects between FDI and economic development. The whole thesis is composed of five chapters. Chapter One is an overall introduction to the thesis. Chapter Two presents a theoretical study and chapter Two and Three provide two empirical studies. Chapter Five concludes. Chapter Two presents a theoretical two-sector model that features the importance of human capital in attracting foreign investment. This model theoretically explains why FDI is more likely to occur among countries that are similar in terms of human capital and technology. On the other hand, MNCs must train local employees to work with firm-specific technology and hence improve the technological skills of local workers. In Chapter Two, an empirical model is constructed to detect whether the productivities of foreign and local firms impact each other. The model is tested on China’s data at the industry level. The results indicate that productivity growth of local and foreign firms are jointly determined. Evidence also suggests that the extent to which spillovers occur varies with difference technology levels of local firms. Chapter Four investigates the relationship between FDI and economic grown based on a panel of data for 84 countries over the period 1970-1999. Both equations of FDI inflow and GDP growth are examined. The results indicate that FDI not only directly promotes economic growth by itself, but also indirectly does so via its interaction terms. There is a strong positive interaction effect of FDI with human capital and a strong negative interaction effect of FDI with technology gap on economic growth in developing countries.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between identity development in late adolescent university students and family history knowledge. The relationship was examined within both the individual developmental and family systems theoretical frameworks. It was proposed that identity development involves achieving personal autonomy from the family of origin and at the same time maintaining positive relatedness to the family of origin. Identity development was examined using exploration, commitment, autonomy, and relatedness as dependent variables. It was proposed that late adolescent's personal exploration of and commitment to roles and values may be influenced by knowledge of parent and grandparent histories. It was also proposed that late adolescent's achievement of personal autonomy and positive family relatedness may be influenced by knowledge of parent and grandparent histories. The sample consisted of 239 university students. The Parental Relationship Inventory (PRI) and the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire (EIPQ) measured identity development constructs. The Do You Know? (DYK) scale measured family history knowledge. Multiple regression analyses indicated a significant positive relationship between commitment and family history knowledge and relatedness and family history knowledge, a negative relationship between autonomy and family history knowledge, and a weak correlation between exploration and family history knowledge. Findings indicate family history knowledge may influence components of identity development. This has practical implications for parents and others such as teachers, youth workers, social workers, and youth program designers whose work is directed at enhancing adolescent development.

Generational conflicts affect socialization practices needed for knowledge transfer and Millennial retention. Because of failed socialization practices, organizations will face significant losses in knowledge capital as Boomers retire and Millennials began to take active roles within the workplace. This interpretative phenomenological study explored Millennials' perceptions of leader-to-employee relationship development that may influence organizational learning and retention practices. Millennial retention is a primary concern in that knowledge acquired is a result of longevity and work experience. The leader-to-member exchange theory was used to navigate this qualitative inquiry. The reflexive approach was implemented to explore 20 Millennial participants' experiences with their managers. The data analysis strategy incorporated a repetitious review and structural coding of participant interview transcripts. Data analysis affirmed that Millennials perceive effective relationship development as a process containing leader empowerment behaviors with collaborative social exchanges. Exploration of participant experiences further identified that reciprocity is a result of high-quality social exchanges. Research findings benefit executive and middle-level management. The information broadens management knowledge of Millennials' perceptions of relationship development that may increase employee retention needed for robust social systems. The implications for positive social change are that increased awareness of advanced relational leadership systems assists in building congruent internal relationships required for organizational learning and retention.
