Streszczenie:
Arising out of the work of Marshall McLuhan, Eric Havelock, Walter Ong, Jacques Derrida and Gregory Ulmer, among others, it is widely thought there are three stages in the history of human communication: the oral, the literate and the electronic. Nonetheless, debate is ongoing over the integration, ordering and the substantive separation of these stages. An upshot of these debates is that each stage is loosely allied to a particular socio/political structure: hunter/gatherer or tribal societies, nation states, and globalisation respectively. In the current alloying of ‘electronic communication’ and ‘globalisation’ though there is a rising interest in what is termed ‘new regionalism’, or regionalisation, even regionality. Accordingly, Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology examines the possibility of an emerging conceptual alliance (and through reference to two Australian regions a sometimes embodied and situated one) between the embryonic communicational infrastructure of electracy and the age-old spatial scale of the region, a relationship that might just come to represent a means of rethinking the civic and the psychic, the commercial and governmental frameworks of an electro-energised global skein. It may also be a way of reinvigorating a study in the relation of the body (in its capacity as a citizen-subject) to the nation state, especially as all these entities are increasingly though ambiguously constituted in and through globalisation. The method of synthesising and antagonising these relations between electracy and regionalism is through the philosophy of chora, Plato’s conception of embodied place as found in the middle section of the Timaeus, coaxed along by a range of interpretations of this important genesis myth in Western philosophy. In particular, chora is taken up in the work of Gregory Ulmer as a key method in the ongoing conceptualisation of an electrate epistemology. Arising out of these concerns Chora-Logic is an experimental re-configuration of the sovereign, abstracted and disembodied citizen-subject of the Cartesian mould (a significant psycho-political mooring of the literate national character) to one situated both in the virtual density and multidimensional actuality of a particular place (organically conceived of herein as an idiosyncratic mix of psychic, domestic, workplace, local and regional proximities), but whose both [dis][embodied] self-knowledge and world-knowledge are now increasingly realised by access to an electronically arbitrated global/regional polis. In sound-bite terms, the bumper sticker could just as easily proclaim the following inversion: ‘Think and feel chora-logically, act globally’. Finally, the nucleus of Chora-Logic: Electracy as Regional Epistemology is a risky praxis whose experimental eddy (in both formal and content terms) spins within the current ambivalence, uncertainty and fast-paced change in electronic communicative arrangements (electracy), as these are themselves wrapped in the psychic and socio-political variabilities of spatial affiliation, all of which are symbiotically entwined regardless of the historical period and/or the geographical context.

This thesis presents a historical study of the relationship between the city of ancient Byzantium and the Thracian Bosporus. Structured around the themes of regional particularity and identity, it shows that local studies can be used to gain fresh insights into more general topics. Viewed through the lens of the relationship between strait and city, the history of the Bosporus sheds light on the nature of economic exploitation and ancient imperialism, and on the nature of ancient communities’ local identities. Chapter 1 explores regionally specific geographical features in the strait, which directed and determined responses to life in the area, around which the regional economy revolved, and in response to which the identities of the local communities were created. Chapters 2 and 3 examine the history of economic exploitation of the region, exploring the attitude of the Athenian Empire toward the Bosporus, and the attempt by the local communities of the Bosporus to create a controlled monetary system in the third century BC. These efforts to exploit local opportunities and commodities, I show, transformed the Bosporus into an attractive economic resource. Chapter 4 examines the local fishing industries of the strait, and demonstrates that the extraordinary availability of fish in the region provoked responses which could not be emulated precisely elsewhere. The thesis also shows that the cultural identity of a Greek city could be intensely local. Byzantium, a Greek colony typically characterized by its relationship to its mother-city, had a series of important local identities, explored in chapter 1. From this perspective, chapter 5 re-examines the difficult relationship between Greeks and Thracians in the region, and chapter 6 questions the validity of the traditional view of the relationship between a colony and its mother-city.

Wright, Peter. "The regionality of cardiac beta-2-adrenoceptor signalling". Thesis, Imperial College London, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/15514.

Streszczenie:
The dysfunction of the apical myocardium is observed following chronic exposure to catecholamines, or after acutely stressful scenarios, in the syndrome of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. The physiological functions of the β2AR were assessed via measurement of cell shortening; β2AR-cAMP signalling was assessed by FRET microscopy, comparing cells from the apical and basal myocardium. The effects of pre-stimulation of the β2AR with high levels of endogenous catecholamines were investigated to simulate pathological scenarios. The structure of the cellular membranes of cells from different myocardial regions was assessed and manipulated to investigate their role in β2AR signalling. An improved animal model of the regional pathology in Takotsubo was investigated using ovariectomized female rats. Apical cardiomyocytes are sensitized to β2AR stimulation, displaying larger increases in inotropy and lusitropy in comparison to basal cells. This was not due to differences in cAMP levels induced by β2AR within the cell cytosol. Differences were apparent in the amount of cAMP reaching the RII-PKA domains (the main arbiters of cellular inotropy and lusitropy). β2AR-cAMP signalling was discovered to be more persistent in the apical cardiomyocytes. Basal cardiomyocytes were found to have a larger number of caveolae within their membranes, caveolae have been demonstrated to modulate β2AR. Following the disruption of caveolar domains via chelation of cholesterol, apical and basal responses to β2AR stimulation were equalized; inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4 had the same effect. Catecholamine pre-stimulation reduced β2AR responses; adrenaline pre-stimulation exerts a more Gi-dependent desensitization than noradrenaline. Female rats are shown to be relatively protected from the effects of adrenergic overstimulation and ovariectomized female rats suffer acutely high mortality. Cells from different regions of the myocardium may control their receptor signalling in different ways to produce desirable physiological activity. In settings of pathology this phenomena may leave certain regions vulnerable to damage.

Rainsbury, Michael P. "River and coast : regionality in North Kimberley rock art". Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2540/.

Streszczenie:
The aim of this thesis is to examine regionality in the rock art of the north Kimberley, Western Australia. The region is renowned for its art of polychrome Wandjina figures, totemic ancestors and creators of the land for modern West Kimberley people. Underlying them are smaller, elegantly painted human figures. These are Bradshaw Figures or the Gwion Gwion as they are increasingly being called. The figures are decorated as if for dancing with waist mounted tassels, sashes and elaborately decorated headdresses, and an elaborate stylistic chronology has been prepared for the Kimberley art sequence. What is missing from the literature and what this thesis aims to fulfil, is knowledge of regionality and changes in the distribution of the body of art. Some the earliest art is from what I term the Early Phase and is thought to date to a time of aridity near the height of the ice age in Australia. Successive art periods may have occurred at times of changing climate as sea levels rose at the end of the ice age and the ensuing flooding of the exposed coastal plain. The sea level and the shoreline only stabilised in its present day position, and the present climate and environment settled to its current conditions, around 6500 years ago. I argue that the different styles of art and different locations selected in which to paint are related to the situation in the period of flux, when the inhabitants of the Kimberley were affected by changes, including the changes in their territory due to rising sea levels. Two geographically distinct areas were selected which would have been different at the time of painting of the earlier art, one being a river and the other, the coast, as at the time of painting the elegant figures, with retreating shorelines, it would have been inland. My research shows that the painters of Middle Phase art oscillated between permanent water and more transient sources, an effect influenced by their experience of ancient changes in climate.

Fraser, Elise A. "The regionality of Bronze Age burial traditions around the Irish Sea". Thesis, University of Reading, 2013. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.590141.

Streszczenie:
The Irish Sea has long been considered to be a central hub for the movement of people and ideas for many thousands of years, and this study suggests that there are many cultural and social links between the communities of the Irish Sea region with a shared attitude to death and the ritual processes used. The original distribution and movement of prehistoric ideas and traditions was an organic motion, not restricted by an invisible line drawn on a map. Today many similar sites, possibly only separated by a few miles may not be considered or analysed together due to their separation by our modern prescribed boundaries. This leaves us with a massive gap in our understanding of patterns and movements of ritual and social behaviours. First, this study will address the current methodology and theory used in the analysis of mortuary ritual, by examination of artefact deposition and the complete burial assemblages. It will examine the less well explored areas, where burial evidence is less visible such as Scotland, Wales and the Western coastal areas of Britain. Secondly taking a case study of the Bronze Age burials in Ireland, it will examine the ritual processes involved in mortuary deposition, creating comparable groups of method, grave objects, monuments and deposition processes to create an understanding of the distribution of burial traditions. Using this information it aims to suggest and map both local and regional groups using Similar or dissimilar burial ritual. Thirdly, it aims to compare the burial rituals and grave assemblage characteristics discovered in Ireland to other areas around the Irish Sea basin, establishing similar usage of material, suggested contact, social links and movement of people and ideas. By looking at the distributions of these finer details it will be possible to map the movement of ritual practice around this Irish Sea basin, using structural and physical monuments, along with portable objects which may show that despite the vast natural barriers, people around the Irish Sea basin were connected in many ways.

Jouanneau, Sara. "Survey of aroma compounds in Marlborough sauvignon blanc wines: regionality and small scale winemaking". Thesis, University of Auckland, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/7960.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Marlborough is the largest wine region in New Zealand and Sauvignon blanc cultivars represented about 60 % of the vineyard area in 2009. The main compounds responsible for the most intense aromas in Sauvignon blanc wines had been assumed to be methoxypyrazines, responsible for the herbaceous, capsicum and asparagus aromas, and varietal thiols, responsible for fruity aromas such as grapefruit, citrus or passion fruit. However, the aromatic potential of Sauvignon blanc wines is too complex to be limited to just these two families of compounds. This study has shown that further groups of aroma compounds (esters, terpenes, C6- and higher alcohols, fatty acids, C13- norisoprenoids, cinnamates and anthranilates) could also be involved in the characteristic aroma of these wines. Winemakers divide the Marlborough Sauvignon blanc growing area into 7 sub-regions, and ascribe different aroma profiles to wines coming from these regions. An extensive study of the compounds that impact on Sauvignon blanc aroma has been undertaken with over fifty important impact aroma compounds quantified in 54 wines from different sub-regions within Marlborough. Some important variations with regard to the Marlborough sub-regions have been revealed, and the extent to which these differences in chemical composition can impact on wine sensory differences has been assessed. A further aim of this research was to assess the optimum small scale winemaking protocol in order to obtain aroma composition results in research wines comparable to those found in commercial wines. Different conditions in the early stages of the winemaking process were studied: destemming and crushing of the grapes, differences between hand-picked and machine-harvested grapes, and the use of maceration enzymes. The results have shown that both destemming and crushing of the grapes are needed to obtain wines with an aroma composition similar to the commercial wines.

Streszczenie:
This thesis considers the nature of pottery and its wider roles in the Highlands and Northern Isles of Scotland from 2500-1800 BC. The period under study represents a key moment in British prehistory with the introduction of metallurgy and wide-ranging changes in society. Since the inception of early Bronze Age studies pottery has played an important role in examinations of identity and chronology. As identified by several scholars there has been a recurrent emphasis on a select number of interpretive themes and regions such as Wessex and Aberdeenshire. This has marginalised certain areas creating an imbalance in our understanding of the tempo and dynamics of change during the period. Recent reviews have begun to address this issue, highlighting the importance of regional studies to our overall understanding of change in the later 3rd millennium. At present, there is no synthesis of ceramic material from the Highlands and Northern Isles that considers the diverse array of pot types and the contexts in which they are found. In response, this thesis aims to characterise the range of ceramic types, their contexts and associations. Through the course of this thesis a series of detailed regional datasets and interpretations are constructed. This is coupled with a review of the longer-term ceramic sequence across the study area, situating the advent of novel pot types within the existing ceramic repertoire. Secondly, this thesis examines the dynamics of ceramic similarity and difference, and what this reveals about regional preferences and identities alongside broader intra and supra regional networks. Drawing on recent relational approaches this thesis explores how ceramic categories came into being, persisted and dissipated at a range of scales. These approaches highlight the fluid nature of change and the need to consider pots as elements of wider assemblages. Through this examination it is possible to detect distinct trends in regional ceramics, allowing for the construction of narratives that extend beyond defining visual similarities, contributing towards understanding the wider significance of similarity and difference.

Groom, Elinor. "Serving the south : television infrastructures and the development of regionality during the emergence of ITV". Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2016. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/33378/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis analyses the early infrastructural development of Southern Television, the now-defunct franchise company that was created in 1958 to serve the South of England on behalf of Independent Television (ITV). In particular, it identifies how Southern Television's status as a regional broadcaster affected the implementation and development of its policies, regulations, resources and practices from the late 1950s to the late 1960s. Histories of regional broadcasting have heretofore focused on programmes that evoke regional culture, and more often than not these histories have ignored the South in favour of northern cultures. This thesis approaches the history of regional broadcasting from a different perspective, one that considers where the region was visible in the internal workings of a regional broadcaster, as opposed to identifying the region in that broadcaster's output. This research utilises a wide variety of archival documentation from Southern Television, as part of an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award project with the BFI National Archive. As such, it offers an unprecedented historical account of regional, commercial television production, which is drawn almost entirely from the political, operational and cultural contexts that are only evidenced behind the camera. Correspondence, budgets, administrative and managerial documentation portray the day-to-day life of a television company that would otherwise be lost. The history of ITV remains a neglected subject in television studies, and this case study contributes a new understanding of the development of commercial broadcasting that takes into account the singular regional structure that characterised the emergence of ITV in Britain.

The Late Bronze Age on the island of Crete saw a period of strong administrative and religious control by the palace at Knossos, which also controlled a vast trade network with the rest of the eastern Mediterranean. After the collapse of the palace of Knossos, the Final Palatial period (1490 - 1320 BCE), was a time of sociopolitical transition and change, witnessing an explosion in number and variety of mortuary practices used, even within the same cemetery. In this thesis I analyze Final Palatial burial practices in a more systematic method than has been previously attempted, in order to gain a better understanding of how the Minoans chose to use the mortuary sphere as a platform for constructing and negotiating their social and political identities in the dynamic socio-political climate of the Final Palatial period.

A close examination of spatial variability in the specified objects in an area between the Rhine/Danube and the Loire, stretching as far as Britannia in the west and Pannonia in the East. Initially a theoretical framework is set out in the context of the archaeological background. Each object type is then analysed in terms of form and decorative style and the occurrence of specific features is shown on distribution maps. Possible production areas can be suggested for different decorative styles. The distribution maps and studies of the range of variability in each category also provide information concerning the scale of manufacture and mechanisms of dispersal; in turn these relate to the level of demand and the changing function of the object. Patterns occurring are then compared to one another and interpreted in terms of their gender and status associations and their overall economic, social, political and cultural significance for the late Roman Western Empire. Links are established between different regions and it is possible to trace the movements of those travelling with the army. Many sites can be shown to have a significant foreign element, with clusters of associated objects which can be sourced to another area. Concentrations of finds along the frontier and in linear distributions in other areas give an indication of contemporary activity at adjacent sites, and shifts in the spatial patterning of objects during the fourth to fifth century transition period provides a fresh insight into the late Roman west and beyond.

Streszczenie:
The debate over the continuity, or discontinuity, of the late Roman settlement landscape has reigned long over studies of settlement and landscape transition between the Roman and early medieval periods. Traditionally, these studies have been confined to their period of research, typically taking a site-based perspective and neglecting the wider social and physical context. Since the development of ‘landscape archaeology’, the importance of the wider physical and social landscape, both as a source of evidence in its own right and the arena in which the processes of settlement change during the Roman and early medieval periods took place, has come to the forefront of settlement and landscape studies for these periods. Much of the research, however, remains qualitative in nature, rich in contextualisation and historical reflection, but lacking in systematic and spatial analysis. This thesis addresses that gap through a broad-scale, quantitative, study of Roman and early medieval settlement, to determine how far patterns of late Roman settlement appear to continue into the 5th to 11th centuries, and to what extent they influenced settlement processes during that period. The results have been systematically assessed across a range of distinctive and adjacent character regions, or pays, over three regional study areas, Norfolk, Kent and Somerset, to determine whether trends in Roman and early medieval settlement relationships, relative to their physical landscape context, demonstrate regional, or sub-regional, variation. The results reinforce the current understanding of settlement processes for these two periods: that the river valleys were predominantly the favoured areas for Roman settlement, particularly higher status Roman settlement, and that the lighter valley soils potentially saw a greater stability and continuity of settlement during the 5th to 11th centuries. This contrasts with the heavier clay soils and interfluvial areas which more typically saw lower status Roman occupation and were more prone to phases of settlement contraction and expansion during the 5th to 11th centuries. This rather simplistic distinction between areas of potential ‘continuity’ and ‘discontinuity’, however, inevitably embraces more nuanced variation in Roman and early medieval settlement relationships at a regional and sub regional level, as demonstrated in the individual discussion for each study area through the concept of ‘pays’.

Streszczenie:
The European Union (EU) has comparative advantage in regional integration. Moreover, regionalism is a growing phenomenon, as both the growing number of regional trade agreements and literature on new regionalism indicate. In this context, the EU has incorporated regional integration into European development policy as a strategy to help integrate the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) states into the global economy, with the negotiation of region-to-region reciprocal free trade agreements, called Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA). This thesis examines the extent to which the Pacific may constitute a region, for the purposes of the Cotonou Agreement, along cultural, political and economic dimensions of regional cooperation. This is in order to measure the potential for regional integration in the Pacific, as well as to test the applicability of the EU's regional template of development in this context. A theoretical framework is developed, based on the political economy of regional cooperation among developing states, in order to apply a series of propositions to the test the integrative potential of the Pacific region. The key finding is that regionalism in the Pacific is easily politicised. Anthropological evidence and economic analysis also confirm the informal nature of regional cooperation in the Pacific works against global imperatives for deeper regional integration, as Pacific islanders have generally not subscribed to a common identity, and the welfare benefits from regional free trade are shown to be minimal. Consequently, the Pacific accepts the EPA platform in order to maintain the development partnership with the EU, rather than because regional free trade is the most desired vehicle for development in the region. A trade agreement will therefore be concluded with the Pacific ACP states, but its form and timing remain the key issues for clarification.

This one-year master's thesis investigates the late part of the Middle Neolithic on the island of Gotland. This thesis has been written without the influence of a singular theoretical pespective, and has therefore seen input from the processual, and postprocessual theories. By using several perspectives, an attempt is made to view the material remains used in the most objective manner possible. The specific aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the Mid-Neolithic inhabitants of Gotland were a part of the Corded Ware culture (or as it is called in Sweden, the Battleaxe culture or the Boataxe culture). Most recent literature has concluded that Gotland was never a part of the Battlexe culture, though this thesis has discovered many parallels with the mainland culture, including the production of similar objects and ritual practices. There are indications that the Gotlandic culture also integrated traits from several other coastal regions of the Baltic Sea, something most Battle Axe settlements did not. After investigating all the data that have been linked with the Battleaxe culture, this thesis concludes that the people on the island of Gotland were not fully assimilated to the Battleaxe culture, but were approaching the culture in both a material and ritual aspects. This leaves the conclusion that the Gotlandic culture towards the end of the Middle Neolithic was somewhat of a hybrid.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the relationship between regionality and societal integration at the turn of the 20th century from an historical and pedagogical perspective. The national identity project of the time that made national unity its overarching goal and that imagined the nation as a homogenous entity, also institutionalised regional distinctiveness. How did the agents of the time handle the conflict between the regionally particular and the nationally general? What is analysed here is the publicly constructed and mediated “regionality”, which is to say the production of meanings about a region and the projection onto it of expectations and ideas. A discourse on Jämtland has been demarcated, which is analysed alongside other contemporary discourses, including class and gender. All of these discourses were rooted in the concept of “societal”. The conception showed that the development of the societal whole was primary in relation to other interests. Defined as “societal”, formerly excluded identities could be made participants in the building of the nation. Empirical examination is given to how “Jämtland” and “the Jämtlandic” were defined in the regional press, in the framework of general education, and by the Swedish Tourist Association, regional societies, institutions and so forth. The study shows that at the turn of the 20th century, regionality very much functioned as a means to territorially anchor more general ideas and notions that inheredin the modernisation and democratisation of society. With the objective of attaining a higher degree of national integration, a regional distinctiveness was constructed that was nationally complementary and that served as a metaphorfor subordinated participation in society. From grand, majestic panoramas, historical myths, traditional local handicrafts and provincial flowers a symbolic distinctiveness was created, but with the aim of establishing genuine national unity. Society was to be described and understood from particular and individual viewpoints, so that the individual could develop a sense of the general and so that society’s fundamental values were not undermined by his liberation. Jämtlandic regionality that has been identified in the study can thus be regarded as a supra-ideological institution. What came to be regionalised was something more fundamental than the artefacts of cultural heritage that people and institutions believed themselves to be rescuing from modernisation: it was the nation’s territoriality. The concept of hembygd represented a “spatialisation” of the societally coded concept of citizenship, and helped to tie this concept to the individual’s own lifeworld. More than anything else, regionality indicateda perspective on reality. If it was possible to obtain an overview of a regional context from a local vantage point or an individual locally crafted artefact, it was also possible to conceive of the larger national framework of which this region formed a part. The regional denoted the link between the private and the public, between the individual and his abstract national affiliation.

The present study addresses the phenomenon of patron saint festivals with tropeadas in countryside communities of Imbituva-PR. It has as main focus of investigation events carried out in four rural communities of the municipality. The context of these localities is marked by the neighborhood groupings formed from the occupation of family groups. The relations of kinship, neighborhood and activities around the chapels of the Roman Catholic Church contribute in a significant way in the spatial delimitation of these rural communities. The objective of this work is to clarify the linkages between the composition of these festivals and the countryside regionality, which is understood as symbolic elements related to a geographic space of reference, stated by the subjects of the research as ―the countryside‖. The methodology is grounded mainly in field studies in rural communities, thus, investigations and the interpretations are built from observation and active observation in festivals with tropeadas combined with a semi-structured interview with people from the different categories of festival participants. Patron saint festivals with tropeadas are taken as a composition constituted by multiple moments and circumstances, in just one day, the celebration assembles the expression of faith in the saints, fund raising for church maintenance, the gathering, entertainment and expenditure, the tradition and the ritual. It was also found that the celebration is an important moment of social entanglement of rural communities and that some of the elements which constitutes them also comprehends symbolic markers that express and reproduce countryside regionality. The presence of horses, the highlight of the community, the agricultural products and the symbol of the horse riders enhance the purposes of a countryside festival, recreating symbolically elements that represents a spatial differentiation anchored to the concept of a communitarian countryside space.

This paper discusses the presence of the regionality and the universality in the work Sagarana, by João Guimarães Rosa. Therefore, it uses theoretical principles from the studies on social imaginary and cultural identity, intending to analyze the contribution of imaginary and identity elements for constructing the regionality of the fictional universe represented, as well as for expressing its intended universality. It examines several forms of symbolic representations valued in the region and the way they enclose aspects of universality, translated into literary language. It´s an interdisciplinary discussion concerning Literature, Sociology and Anthropology, which is connected to the regionality studies.

This dissertation aims to demonstrate that S?o Paulo State?s urban history was surrounded, from the beginning, by the imprecision between the urban and rural environments, especially in the mogiana region, which spawned a rural urbanity apart from the administrative limits and strongly related to Minas Gerais. This way, it relativizes the civilization?s approaches, presenting shards of a road network and spread preexistent neighborhoods, deeply related to the natural landscape, structured according the way of life and imagination of their inhabitants and where ideas and goods that supplied the internal market traveled. At the same time, they worked as communication channels with areas already considered urbanized, from where came diluted influences built from the diversity of beings and ways. This culturally diverse landscape shaped a perception of the urban environment compatible to the existing rural way of life and adapted to the reality and possibilities of the rural population. Therefore, the cultural landscape was the base for the insertion of the administrative network then consolidated the modern regional territoriality. Like stacked layers, intersection and detachment moments are observed, influenced by the encounters, conflicts, dialogs, resistances and redeterminations of the landscape itself and the network. The failure in immediately complying with an external urbanizing model, makes this process peculiar, consistent with the local culture and detached from the belle ?poque concept. This regionalist urbanity kept rustic cultural aspects that justified its spatial features and the organization method of the society around communities, where the production and genealogy defined them as groups. Under this scenario, urban cores presented themselves as places of political representativeness, linking the region to the capital of S?o Paulo, while converting it in a metropolis. This administratively fragmented cultural landscape between S?o Paulo and Minas Gerais territories was kept until late 19th century and the industrialization process, that began during the 20th century, was a milestone on the frontier definitions.

The aim of this paper is not to analyze or evaluate all the poetry of the above mentioned authors but only those pieces of their creative work which deal with the motif of nature. So this master’s thesis analyses the motif of nature in the regionalists’ poetry of interwar period. The poems concerning nature are described in this work, stylistic and artistic devices of describing nature are discussed as well. The objects of this paper are: 1. To show the methods to describe the views of Vilnius. 2. To point out the most important motifs of the countryside in the poetry of Tadeusz Lopalewski, Witold Hulewicz, Wanda Niedzialkowska- Dobaczewska, and Eugenia Kobylinska. The landscapes of Vilnius are often related to people’s feature, their abilities to understand and feel. The regionalists idealize and glorify this nature. According to them the nature is exceptional and unusual. The poetry of regionalists reveals the features of romanticism and the “New Polish” styles in which the nature is personified and reflects the inner world of the lyrical object. The first part of the paper deals with the discussion of the nature of Vilnius in the poetry of the above mentioned authors. On the ground of the analysis of their... [to full text]

Catalonia and Bavaria today cling tightly to their linguistic distinctiveness, their cultural traditions, their culinary specialties, and their political particularity. Even after the passage of some centuries, these regions have not yet amalgamated into the nation states that contain them. And yet, Bavaria’s stubborn regionalism does not translate into any real longings for secession, whereas many Catalonians struggle actively and adamantly for autonomy. Why are there strong independence movements in Spain, but not in Germany? How have state formation and the relationship between the center and the region affected independence movements? This thesis provides a historical analysis of Bavarian and Catalan regionalism and argues that autonomy mitigates secession if the predominant state has accommodated sub-state regionalism. This thesis explains that the EU can either strengthen or weaken regional governments, depending upon the nature of the relationship between the regional governments and their associated national government. This thesis argues that the security of both a newly independent state and its parent government is worse off in the short term; the severity of the security situation depends on the nature of the divorce.

This research has as main focus the observation of land and of people from São Paulo as being the artistic point on Guilherme de Almeida\'s literature. It comprehends poet\'s reflections about the cultural identity of people and about the city itself, based on articles from the newspaper \"O Estado de S. Praca składa się z trzech zasadniczych części.
I skyriuje nagrinėjama regionalizmo teorija. Darbo II skyrius skirtas Julijano Korsako asmenybei.
The monograph includes a complex of problems connected with the regionalism character of Julian Korsak poetry. A lot of attention is paid to the problems of literature regionalism theory. The term regionalism is already known from many years, bet its treats intuicionally. There is no unequivocal definicion . The monograph presents types of definitions this problem. The analysis of the regionalism character of Julian Korsak poetry shown, that its exists in many levels of this literature – from the motives, names, symbols or geographic points till the language of poetry. The main part of the monograph deals with the examples of regionalism in poetry of Julian Korsak. It presents their basic types, construction, models and principle of use. The monograph also discusses abaut life of Julian Korsak. Becouse of insufficient sources about his biography, I decided to write about epoch and region of his childhood and adoult life. The main target of this monograph was to show the many perspectives and aspects of regionalism in Julian Korsak‘s poetry, what I hope is success. The absence of documents and other monographs about regionalism and poet‘s biography was a difficulty, bet at the same time it was an source of reserch satisfaction.

Lambayeque is a northern department that is characterized by its ancestral culture. The Sicán civilization developed there, and therefore, inherited a tradition of craftsmanship that continues to develop today. However, there is not an adequate equipment to exhibit and commercialize handicrafts. Also, the deficient distribution and location of centers of artisan sale has caused the devaluation of this activity. On the other hand, the artisans of Lambayeque are affected by the rains of the Niño Costero which has caused the loss of their workshops, work tools and access to raw materials. According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Perú (MINCETUR), 266 artisans were affected in the region .Therefore, the state is developing a containment and investment plan for the recovery of their workplaces. Likewise, in Lambayeque there are 3 993 artisans written in the National Registry of the Artisan this means that the activity is profitable and it is the sustenance of many families. Therefore, this research is based on the study of the markets of artisan production in order to determine the adequate functioning and design, since most of them are spaces that have been adapted for this activity. Jointly applying the principles of Regionalist Architecture for the integration and architectural interpretation of Lambayeque, the development of a cultural market will be achieved.

Why do some states develop deeper regionalism while others do not? Comparing European and Asian regionalism, this study provides an alternative explanation of different types of regionalism and the national variations in regionalization since the mid 1980s. It defines regionalism as a strategy pursued by a state that desires to enhance its governability of the national economy when market authority outgrows state authority. The rise of regionalism in the neoliberal world economic order changes the balance between the state’s public power and the state’s market governability, consequently resulting in a political convergence toward a majoritarian political system based on individualism and delegative democracy. However, regionalism is realized in very distinctive patterns across different regions as the different historical paths of regional capitalism shape the state-society relationship and the state’s capability of governing the national economy. European welfare states developed a deeper regionalism because they sought to impose a neoliberal economic transformation on their societies by shifting their economic priority of equality and economic policy making based on social concertation toward efficiency and the formation of an encompassing distributional coalition. In contrast, Asian developmental states prefer preserving national autonomy to relying on a formal regional institution to constrain states’ national authority because they are more capable of implementing the neoliberal economic transformation in terms of market governability and the formation of encompassing distributional coalitions.

Streszczenie:
The last thirty years of Renaissance scholarship has debated the extent to which the origins of English nationalism can be traced back to the early-modern period. Countering the scepticism of modernists like Gellner, who date the rise of nationalism to the eighteenth century, Richard Helgerson and others have argued that the literary, legal, theatrical, and religious cultures of the period all present evidence for the existence of an early-modern English nationalism. Historiography has always been key to these debates: national identity is defined by creating histories and modes of historical thought suitable for the needs of that nation. This thesis will show that early-modern culture can better be interpreted through an understanding of its prevailing 'regionalism', and that local affiliations to places, counties, institutions, or patronage circles are obscured by a teleological interest in the rise of nationalism. The first chapter presents a re-evaluation of British antiquarianism from the perspective of the history of scholarship. It argues both that antiquarianism was an outgrowth of the transnational world of Latin scholarship, and that regional histories were emerging through the work of devolved networks of scholars. The second chapter considers two poets, one the poet of nationalism (Spenser), the other the poet of metropolitanism (Jonson), and through picking apart their encounters• with early-modern antiquarianism shows that each had complex regional affinities. The third chapter, on drama in the regions, shows that the circumstances of dramatic performance make for unique (and problematic) encounters with regional jurisdictions. The history play, and the historical scholarship of early-modern dramatists, are the focus here. And finally a chapter on Milton explores the impact of the polarising effect of the civil war on clerical erudition

Streszczenie:
The increased spread in the location of value added coupled with the growing impetus for new forms of bilateral integration are re-shaping international economic activity. The world is becoming more regional and more fragmented but little empirical work has been dedicated to examining the nature of the links between these processes. This thesis aims to fill this gap in the literature. The primary aim of the first essay of this thesis is to extend current indicators of international production so that the bilateral degree of vertical specialisation can be captured. This has been one of the major hurdles in examining the links between vertical specialisation and Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). The comparative static analysis of this first essay reveals that there appears to be a high incidence of regional value chain activity and this motivates the aims of the second essay. It attempts to isolate the impact of an FTA on these flows through a theoretically derived gravity model of input trade. The results suggest that an FTA increases the use of intermediate inputs that are part of a bilateral value chain by 65%. Moreover, the results identify the presence of ‘magnification' which implies that this type of trade is also more responsive to changes in trade costs and income variables. The third essay then looks at how the changing nature of trade affects the formation of new FTAs. It suggests that the propagation of international production alters the political economy dynamics of countries towards favouring further liberalisation. It also identifies regulatory quality and a growing FTA ‘contagion' as determinants of new FTAs.

Streszczenie:
This thesis takes as its point of departure the debate on federalism that emerged in Italy in the years preceding the unification of 1861 and that resumed in the early 1990s, a debate mainly revolving around the profound socio-economic differences between the North and the South of the country. Torn between continuous centripetal and centrifugal forces, but not characterized by ethnic connotations, the Italian regional model implemented with the 1948 constitution and strengthened in 2001 elicits questions that intersect with topical debates engaging scholars across the globe, and displays features that have the potential to stimulate fruitful discussions both inside and outside Italian borders. While the present state of Italian regionalism remains ambiguous, the Italian regional model distils lessons coming from different theoretical experiences, including federalism, sub-state nationalism, and the European unification process. Therefore, it can be seen as an innovative experiment crafted by those who were looking for a compromise between unitary and federal schemes. Adopting a theoretical framework combining literature on federalism, regionalism and sub-state national theory, this thesis addresses a number of questions that help fill a gap in scholarship. The thesis discusses the relationship between federalism and regionalism, arguing that regionalism is an overarching term that incorporates diverse experiences; consequently, the regional state paradigm to which Italy is usually associated is just one of the many shapes that regionalism can take. The research also identifies the elements enabling us to differentiate between a federal and a regional model, as well as the advantages of opting for a regional scheme (as opposed to a federal one). The socio-economic tensions between the North and the South of Italy offer the ideal basis to discuss non-national differences, an expression used to indicate political and socio-economic communities located within a geographical territory displaying some de facto asymmetries compared to the state-wide community, seeking some form of acknowledgement of their specificity. The thesis argues that national differences (e.g. differences based on linguistic, religious or other cultural issues) are not the only ones requiring attention, and it identifies a number of legal and constitutional stratagems that could be used to address non-national difference. Also, the recognition of non-national difference may also help find a solution to issues regarding sub-state national recognition. Finally, the thesis tries to find a point of reconciliation between federalism and solidarity, particularly in the context of non-national difference. The Italian regional experience serves once again as the point of departure to discuss whether federalism and solidarity are conflicting ideas, and to open a discussion regarding the exact contours of solidarity, especially in its horizontal understanding.

In this thesis I problematize the processes of (hetero)normalization of bodies in school Physical Education. For this, I discuss and analyze how and which processes of gender and sexual normalization are set in the pedagogical discourse of teachers who work in the discipline of Physical Education in Vale do Jequiriçá/Bahia, taking as theoretical, methodological and politic references the feminist studies, the queer theory and poststructuralist Foucauldian studies. To build the research corpus, I conducted the fieldwork articulating some methodological procedures. Primarily, I made a research with teachers who taught Physical Education classes in public schools located in different municipalities of the region investigated. Thus, I applied 28 questionnaires, organized a focus group with seven participants, and performed seven interviews. Complementarily, I analyzed the political-pedagogical projects of two schools which provided the documents. The conceptual lines that define the notions of ‘norm’, ‘gender’ and ‘heteronormativity’ were privileged to explore the empirical material produced. The subsequent analysis were organized from the dyad knowledge-power, investing in its organizational and explanatory power for understanding how the (hetero)norm works. I argued that biological-reproductive and health education discourses circumscribe the limits of the thinkable about sexuality in school from a preventive-informative logical. In addition, I discussed songs from ‘pagode baiano’ style as cultural pedagogies that, conflicting with biological-age discourse, make visible ‘advanced’ knowledge about sexuality. In the strategic plan, I observed the annual interdisciplinary fairs and/or seminars as pedagogies that operate with emphasis on sexual and reproductive health articulated to the silencing of the desire experiences of non-heterosexual individuals. I discussed how binary gender, in conjunction with regional discourses, runs the statement “arrest your calves because my bull calf is loose”, expressed in the rejection of boys to touch other boys and in the naturalization of ‘daring’ desire manifestations from boys to girls in Physical Education classes. The performed investigation allows to say that heterosexuality is taken as a measure of knowledge and the investment in pedagogies based in sex (and in binary gender) form the subject (un)recognizable and (im)possible of school Physical Education.

This thesis in social anthropology is based on the inner essence, manifestations and tendencies of Scottish nationalism and regionalism. The thesis intends to investigate how Scottish nationalism and regionalism are related to each other. It is meant to highlight the meaning of the Wallace-myth for maintenance of the Scottish national consciousness and to illuminate factors lying behind this myth. It is also meant to study how Turner, Lévi-Strauss, Anderson, Eriksen, Hobsbawm and Hettne’s theories work in the Scottish field. This thesis intends to contribute to a better understanding and deeper insight into Scottish nationalism.
