Streszczenie:
Predicting customer churn has become the priority of every telecommunication service provider as the market is becoming more saturated and competitive. This paper presents a comparison of neural network learning algorithms for customer churn prediction. The data set used to train and test the neural network algorithms was provided by one of the leading telecommunication company in Malaysia. The Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) networks are trained using nine (9) types of learning algorithms, which are Levenberg Marquardt backpropagation (trainlm), BFGS Quasi-Newton backpropagation (trainbfg), Conjugate Gradient backpropagation with Fletcher-Reeves Updates (traincgf), Conjugate Gradient backpropagation with Polak-Ribiere Updates (traincgp), Conjugate Gradient backpropagation with Powell-Beale Restarts (traincgb), Scaled Conjugate Gradient backpropagation (trainscg), One Step Secant backpropagation (trainoss), Bayesian Regularization backpropagation (trainbr), and Resilient backpropagation (trainrp). The performance of the Neural Network is measured based on the prediction accuracy of the learning and testing phases. LM learning algorithm is found to be the optimum model of a neural network model consisting of fourteen input units, one hidden node and one output node. The best result of the experiment indicated that this model is able to produce the performance accuracy of 94.82%.

Streszczenie:
The work is aimed at solving a relevant for Ukraine and the world scientific and applied problem – the development of methods and means of constructing a psychophysical portrait of man to determine its stress resistance. For a number of professions, special methods of selecting personnel for special abilities are needed. Such abilities (qualities) include: health; motivation and will to act decisively, with the maximum effort of their physical, intellectual and psychological capabilities; physical training; level of mastery of technical means (or other means necessary in a critical situation); temperament; nature; emotional condition; accumulation of fatigue during the task and others. The article develops a method for classifying users according to the level of stress resistance on the basis of a modified auto-associative neural network using the Fletcher – Reeves algorithm. There are several ways to classify stress responses, but a more obvious study is to divide them into behavioral, intellectual, emotional and physiological manifestations of stress. The main signs of behavioral stress are psychomotor disorders (excessive muscle tension, winter breathing rhythm), lifestyle changes (changes in daily routine, sleep disturbances), occupational disorders (decreased productivity, increased fatigue), impaired social role functions, increased conflict, increasing aggression, etc.). In conditions of constant influence of stress factors on human consciousness, the decision can be ill-considered and made under the influence of emotions. To avoid such a situation in the workplace, the head of the company must monitor the condition of the operator. This human operator stress assessment system has been developed to predict human operator stress. The main task of the model is to predict based on the obtained parameters of the human condition (stress or not). Additional testing was added to increase the model’s performance based on input data on physical parameters, gender, age, height, and bad habits. The purpose of testing is to increase the accuracy of model prediction. Data from 92 respondents with 1180 records were selected for testing. Data set division: testing – 20 %, training / verification – 80%. The best results were achieved with the help of our own developed neural network based on Keras. Also in the paper the implementation of decision-making methods, the method of k-nearest neighbors and the modified auto-associative network was presented.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Background: Patients with relapsed or refractory (R/R) DLBCL generally have a poor prognosis, particularly if they are not candidates for autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT) or experience relapse following approved CAR-T therapies. The UNITY-NHL study systematically explored the efficacy and tolerability of the PI3K-d/CK1-e inhibitor, umbralisib, alone (umbra), and in combination with the glycoengineered anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody ublituximab (U2), followed by a cohort treated with U2 plus bendamustine (U2+benda). Herein we report on the experience in a large cohort of patients with R/R DLBCL. Methods: This study explored a sequential combination design as described above. Eligible patients had histologically confirmed R/R DLBCL and were ineligible for ASCT, with no limit on number or type of prior treatment. Umbra was given orally at 800 mg once daily in 28-day cycles (C) until disease progression or unacceptable tolerability. Ublituximab was administered intravenously (IV) on Days 1, 8, and 15 of C1, on Day 1 of C2-6, and on Day 1 every 3C through C24. Benda was administered IV (90 mg/m 2) on Days 1/2 of C1-6. Cell of origin, NGS, and c-myc (FISH) were analyzed centrally. The primary endpoint of the study was overall response rate (ORR) as assessed by an independent review committee. Secondary endpoints included duration of response, progression-free survival, time to response, and safety. Results: 226 patients with DLBCL were enrolled as follows: umbra monotherapy (n=30), U2 (n=66), and U2+benda (n=130). The population demographics included the following features: median age was 72 years (range 32-95); 59% were male; 64% of patients had stage III or IV disease; 58% were refractory to their immediate prior therapy; and the median number of prior therapies was 2 (range 1-8). There were no substantive differences in these characteristics across cohorts. Median follow-up for the umbra, U2, and U2+benda arms was 51 months (range 47-61), 46 months (range 41-57), and 40 months (range 35-47), respectively. Overall and complete response rates for the umbra mono, U2, and U2+benda arms were 13.3% (CR 3.3%), 31.8% (CR 10.6%), and 43.1% (CR 16.9%), respectively. Results pertaining to secondary endpoints are listed in Table 1. Correlation of response to cell of origin and mutation/c-myc status is ongoing and will be available at the time of presentation. Adverse events (AEs) were similar across the cohorts, with the exception of hematologic AEs which were increased in patients receiving benda. The most common all-grade AEs by treatment arm (umbra, U2, and U2+benda, respectively) were diarrhea (47%; 41%; and 48%), nausea (40%; 45%; and 45%), fatigue (33%; 30%; and 41%) and neutropenia (3.3%; 18%; and 32%). All-grade AEs of special interest included non-infectious colitis (3.3%, 1.5%, and 2.3%) and pneumonitis (3%, 1.5%, and 1.5%) in umbra, U2 and U2+benda treated patients respectively. Grade 3/4 AEs were uncommon, with the only events >10% being limited to neutropenia (11% for U2; 27% for U2+benda), and anemia (17% for U2+benda). Conclusions: In the DLBCL cohort of UNITY-NHL, the U2+benda triplet regimen was active and well tolerated in patients with R/R DLBCL who were unsuitable for transplant or who had relapsed following ASCT. Umbra monotherapy and U2 were also well tolerated but resulted in lower ORR than in the U2+benda cohort. Figure 1 Figure 1. The Alps in the oeuvre of Zygmunt KrasińskiWhen it comes to the scope of its topics and level of detail, the sketch “The Alps in the oeuvre of Zygmunt Krasiński” is a preliminary reconnaissance. Krasiński’s image of the Alps was influenced by his “educational” trip to Switzerland on which he went with his guardians in the autumn of 1829. The primeval and monumental nature of the Alpine landscape left an indelible mark on the psyche of the young Romantic poet. This can be seen in Krasiński’s letters to his father as well as discursive writings of the future author of Non-Divine Comedy. Of crucial importance in the exploration of the Alps by young Krasiński were his Alpine trips: first in the company of his tutor and English friend Henry Reeve and then in the company of Adam Mickiewicz and Edward Odyniec.

AbstractIn 1769, the East India Company decided to transform the Bengali silk industry, and introduced Piedmontese reeling technologies and spatially concentrated working practices into the area. Although Bengali raw silk reeled with the new methods never reached the standards of Piedmontese silks, the Company was able to produce huge quantities of low-quality raw silks, and to gain market share in London from the 1770s to the 1830s. By investigating the reasons behind this partial success, this article shows that some features of Piedmontese technologies had a crucial impact on peasants who specialized in the mulberry cultivation and the rearing of silkworms. The Company had to cope with resistance from some rural economic agents in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Bengal, but other elements in local society were able to profit from the Company's interest in producing raw silk.

The article clarifies the concept of in-house interview as an interview of employees or job candidates, organized by the security service of a private company, identifies the types of in-house interview, clarifies the concept of confession. The two-stage model of inquest and some indicators of lying, which are used by the authors during the in-house interview, are described. The indicators correlating with lying in the course of service interview - the latent verbal aggression, lying strategies, presence of textual bridges and lacunas, separate elements of mimic and kinetic behavior are offered. The two-step model of Reed’s inquest, known as “Reed’s Nine Steps to Getting a Confession”; the approach of domestic psychologist L. B. Filonov, the authors’ approach to organizing the process of getting a confession within a service interview are partially described. The psychological mechanisms that make it possible to obtain previously unknown information during in-house interviews, which can be used in any kind of interviews and interrogations, are considered.

Controlled atmosphere (CA) preservation of perishable fruit and vegetables represents new opportunities for today's reefer operators. This technology affords the carrier an efficient and economical method of introducing and maintaining a low oxygen atmosphere that, when used in conjunction with temperature control, can significantly enhance the preservation of fruit and vegetables. Improved product quality, new markets, and reduced product losses are benefits realized through the use of hollow fiber membrane air separation technology. Seasonal products, which may be unavailable because of the transit time of shipping, are now a reality for operators utilizing this technology. High-value products such as fresh cut flowers, previously dedicated to air freight, may be a natural extension of the technology. The authors' company is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. Generon supplies hollow fiber membrane systems for the on-site generation of gaseous nitrogen. In 1992 the company provided turnkey design and installation services of controlled atmosphere systems for three fully refrigerated containerships operated by the Great White Fleet. These ABS-classed vessels were the first of their type to fully utilize controlled atmosphere technology for the improved quality and reduction of perishable losses.

The Konkani Brahmin Babba Prabhu served the Dutch in Kerala as a merchant, broker and envoy for many years. Nevertheless, the Dutch were divided in their opinion of him. Rijcklof van Goens trusted him in 1663 as a competent merchant, but a year later Hustaert called him a roguish Brahmin. He was alternately praised and blamed, until in 1691, when Hendrik Adriaan van Reede visited Malabar as a commissioner, he was charged with several difficult tasks and was granted rather exceptional privileges. However, after Van Reede's departure pressure was put on him to repay his debts to the Company. Admittedly we can only trace the changing Dutch opinions of Babba and not his opinion of them. No sources other than the Dutch archives are available to us. But they contain a mass of factual information. From these we will reconstruct Babba's relations with the Dutch.

This paper outlines the concept, theory, and purpose of corporate mergers as well as its history both in U.S. and in Japan, and how this merger activity fits in one company’s growth strategy by exemplifying a hypothetical case. We will examine and weigh the options whether the Buyer should pursue the acquisition or not, by utilizing several company valuation methods. We will discuss the determinants of today’s worthiness of a Seller company and finally conclude if the investment is worthwhile and is warranted. In this paper, we will evaluate a corporate value of a reefer (Refrigerator container) container leasing company as a hypothetical Seller firm. Although the industry is a relatively small niche, the reefer container leasing company recorded good financial results in the past few years. The market highly reflects the demand and supply mechanism. The expectation of the future demand would have direct impact to present corporate value. Historically, excessively high premium and/or high exercise price were closely connected to a larger probability of smashing a business in the future. Every M&A activity is always accompanied by inevitable uncertainties — i.e. future market composition, global competition, macroeconomic factors, and so on. To deal with those future uncertainties, we will conduct sensitivity analysis under a few scenarios with each subsequent impact. We believe that it is critical to calculate a proper exercise price on the acquisition based upon the most appropriate and diligent valuation possible.

The ADRIREEF project was targeted to valorization of the natural and artificial reefs in the Adriatic Sea according to the principles of the Blue Growth. ARPA Puglia identified the coralligenous reef in the Torre Guaceto MPA (Brindisi, Italy) as a case study for the project purposes. According to the project objectives, the Agency selected some low-impact monitoring methods, like a standard photographic sampling method for the benthic communities and the visual census method to describe the fish assemblages and finally a R.O.V. to test the applied methods and compare the obtained data.

<em>Abstract</em>.—Visual census scuba surveys (<em>n </em>= 87) were used to compare fish assemblages among three artificial reef types: big reefs (e.g., ships), tank reefs (i.e., U.S. Army tanks) and small reefs (e.g., metal cages and concrete pyramids), over three locations on the continental shelf (inner shelf, 18–26-m depths; mid-shelf, 26–34-m depths; outer shelf, 34–41-m depths) from April 20, 2012 to November 30, 2015 in the northeast Gulf of Mexico. These surveys identified 66 fish taxa (lowest taxon: 58 species, five genera, three families), and 65 taxa were used in community comparisons. Artificial reefs were dominated by Red Snapper <em>Lutjanus campechanus </em>(35.3% of total fish observed), Tomtate <em>Haemulon aurolineatum </em>(22.4%), Vermilion Snapper <em>Rhomboplites aurorubens </em>(19.5%), Atlantic Spadefish <em>Chaetodipterus faber </em>(7.0%), Greater Amberjack <em>Seriola dumerili </em>(3.0%), and Gray Triggerfish <em>Balistes capriscus </em>(1.8%). These six most abundant species comprised 89% of the total number of individuals observed. Red Snapper and Greater Amberjack mean sizes (total length mm) were larger at big reefs, Vermilion Snapper and Atlantic Spadefish were larger at tank reefs, and Tomtates were larger at small reefs. Red Snapper, Atlantic Spadefish, and Greater Amberjacks were larger at reefs on the outer shelf, and Red Snapper, Tomtates, Vermilion Snapper, Atlantic Spadefish and Greater Amberjacks were larger in the spring. Richness and Shannon–Wiener diversity indices were higher on big reefs and tank reefs compared to small reefs. Evenness, richness, and Shannon–Wiener diversity were lower in winter compared to other seasons. Fish assemblages, based on Bray–Curtis similarities, were different among reef type, location, and season, but no interactions effects were identified. In the present study, fish assemblages on big reefs were more similar to assemblages on tank reefs in comparison to small reefs. The larger size, longer life span, and relative stability of the big reefs and tank reefs were the reef attributes most likely responsible for these assemblage associations. Similarly, more stable conditions at deeper depths (less affected by tropical storms) and proximity to deepwater reef fish communities (e.g., pinnacle reefs) most likely influenced the increased assemblage diversity on the artificial reefs at outer-shelf locations. Diversities and densities were highest during the fall. This was most likely due to increased recruitment of tropical species and new age-0 recruits that were spawned during the same year. The attributes of all artificial reefs are not identical; consequently, it is important for managers to consider how reef type, shelf location, and season affect each species’ affinity and association with artificial reefs.

In our final hour (2003), cambridge university astronomer Martin Rees concluded that the odds of global civilization surviving to the year 2100 are no better than one in two. His assessment of threats to humankind ranging from climate change to a collision of Earth with an asteroid received good reviews in the science press, but not a peep from any political leader and scant notice from the media. Compare that nonresponse to a hypothetical story reporting, say, that the president had had an affair. The blow-dried electronic pundits, along with politicians of all kinds, would have spared no effort to expose and analyze the situation down to parts per million. But Rees’s was only one of many credible and well-documented warnings from scientists going back decades, including the Fourth Assessment Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007). All were greeted with varying levels of denial, indifference, and misinterpretation, or were simply ignored altogether. It is said to be a crime to cause panic in a crowded theater by yelling “fire” without cause, but is it less criminal not to warn people when the theater is indeed burning? My starting point is the oddly tepid response by U.S. leaders at virtually all levels to global warming, more accurately described as “global destabilization.” I will be as optimistic as a careful reading of the evidence permits and assume that leaders will rouse themselves to act in time to stabilize and then reduce concentrations of greenhouse gases below the level at which we lose control of the climate altogether by the effects of what scientists call “positive carbon cycle feedbacks.” Even so, with a warming approaching or above 2°C we will not escape severe social, economic, and political trauma. In an e-mail to the author on November 19, 2007, ecologist and founder of the Woods Hole Research Center George Woodwell puts it this way: . . . There is an unfortunate fiction abroad that if we can hold the temperature rise to 2 or 3 degrees C we can accommodate the changes. The proposition is the worst of wishful thinking.

Abstract The oil and gas companies generally design and engineering their capital intensive assets for the goal of multi-decades operations. Thus the technology screening and selection has never been taken lightly because the company is relying on these technologies for the considerable life of the asset. Historically, the oil and gas industry has selected automation and control solutions from large system providers for reliable service which leads to limited service operations and technology obsolescence challenge through the asset management lifetime. Oil and gas operators, through venues such as the Open Group's OPAFTM and OSDUTM Forums (OSDU), have an opportunity to define the next generation of automation and control systems that break the conventional paradigm of reliance on proprietary systems, with their associated "vendor lock-in", limited availability of new features and innovation, and the costs of managing supply chain for single-source products and product obsolescence. The adoption of the information technologies (IT) into the next generation operational technologies (OT) solutions must eliminate the barriers to scaling by delivering fit-for-purpose, reliable, long-lived, secure, and interoperable systems. The approach being pursued by ExxonMobil, Intel, Red Hat, and our partners is to break the hardware and software inter-dependency that has been inherent to closed proprietary process control systems by, (1) leveraging advances in open architecture framework design concepts for software development and integration, (2) enabling interoperability in application software with defined functions including machine learning and analytic techniques, (3) hardening the zero-trust security model (Scott Rose, 2020) with zero-touch device management (Reeves, 2019), and (4) ensuring secure robust channels for control applications to communicate from the edge systems to control centers and/or cloud. This paper describes the open automation and control platform for upstream oil and gas operators enabling their field controls, optimization, and analytics with a secure zero-trust and zero-touch multi-vendor solution. The proposed open automation architecture has evolved through a sequence of evaluations described in this paper and validated through a field trial by ExxonMobil where the commercial edge device was loaded with a Linux operating system with fully pre-emptible real time kernel (preempt-RT) (Linux Foundation, n.d.), the Open Edge Insights (OEI) middleware (Intel Corporation, n.d.), and a plunger lift well control application from Naonworks. This software stack controlled the well with 100 millisecond response time. The system operated the plunger lift well continuously for 6-months powered only by a solar panel and lead acid battery. The well production process was not only controlled locally but had remote access for supervisory monitoring and control. In parallel with the extended field trial, the team has ported the solution to work with the Red Hat operating system, security, and system management infrastructure as well as the integration of secure device onboarding (FIDO Alliance, n.d.). The objective is to demonstrate a complete chain of trust from device manufacture through application deployment, application runtime, and lifecycle management. Currently, the technologies are being presented and validated to OSDUTM member companies in the OSDU Edge lab.

We evaluate and compare the stiffness properties of 6 different configurations of tensile trusses. More specifically, given a constant structural envelope and amount of homogeneous isotropic linear elastic cable material, the stiffness properties of the configurations are analyzed with constant cross-sectional area cables. The configurations include: (1) a Stewart platform, (2) Stewart platform with full spine, 3 cable tie-offs, and slip joint, (3) 6-loop dual-reeved system with partial spine, (4) 4-node/4-loop dual-reeved system, (5) double Stewart platform, and (6) 3D extension of a 2D 2 cable system. In each case, we use analytical results for the evaluation of the stiffness matrix, with some new stiffness matrix results being presented. Of the 6 competing configurations considered, no one configuration was uniformly better than all others, but both the double Stewart platform and the Stewart platform with full spine, 3 cable tie-offs, and slip joint performed quite well, of course given free, massless, rigid body material.

Streszczenie:
Researchers have evaluated the stiffness matrix for different robots and structures, including the Stewart platform style tensile truss. However, none of the configurations analyzed to date involve “dual-reeving,” a common industrial rigging technique whereby cables are spatial loops, vs. open-loop elements, such as those represented by simple line segments. The 4-node/4-loop kinematic configuration analyzed contains 4 symmetric nodes and loops and provides competition for a comparable-sized Stewart platform from the perspective of directional stiffness. Additionally, like the Stewart platform, only a modest amount of off-diagonal compliance matrix elements are present, which from a practical and intuitive point of view, can be advantageous. The methodology used and illustrated in detail is easily generalized to adapt to more involved configurations. Numerical results are obtained for a specific example and compared with those from a Stewart platform. Lastly, some experimental results compare favorably with those derived analytically and evaluated numerically.

Streszczenie:
ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company (URC) conducted a pilot testing program to systematically assess the effect of reeling on the fatigue performance of welded risers. Given the criticality of deepwater risers, a robust reeling simulation method was developed. The method properly addresses the fundamental weld sampling issue arising from the randomness of the plane in which risers are reeled. To address that issue the nominal reeling strain is accumulated around the entire circumference of girth weld, thereby capturing the weak fatigue bending plane. The reeling simulation is implemented by using multi-plane bending. The number and orientation of bending planes needed to simulate a total cumulative reeling strain are based on (1) the strain experienced during the process being simulated (2) weld fabrication and inspection records and (3) residual stresses left after reeling calculated via finite element analyses. Thirty production-quality welds were made on 323mm OD × 20.5-mm WT (12.75-in OD × 0.81-in WT) seamless X60 pipe, yielding a total of 14 full-scale specimens. Two different welding procedures and two different cumulative nominal strain levels were used. The effect of reeling on fatigue was assessed by comparing the fatigue lives obtained with companion reeled and non-reeled full-scale specimens. Results indicate that, although there was a distinct deleterious effect of reeling on fatigue life, the performance may still be adequate for most riser applications when high quality welds are used and qualified.

Abstract Objective/Scope The H.T.M.S Underwater Learning Sites Project is initiated in 2010 with the main objectives to rehabilitate marine ecology by reusing the decommissioned battleships, namely H.T.M.S. Prab and H.T.M.S. Sattakut, as a new home of marine life and sessile organisms, to enrich the marine biodiversity, to be the learning sites of marine life in long-term basis, and to create new diving sites to attract the tourists, reduce the effects on natural coral reefs from harmful activities such as tourist boat anchoring or mooring onto them, scuba diving damage by touching or stirring up sand sediments, as well as generate a considerable income for local communities. Methods, Procedures, Process PTTEP has engaged government agencies, academic institutions, local businesses, and communities to consider the most suitable structure to be used as a new underwater learning site. In 2011, after studying man-made reefs and ensuring the minimal impact on marine ecology, two decommissioned ships offered by the Royal Thai Navy were placed underwater at Koh Ngam Noi and Koh Tao in southern Thailand, the world's famous scuba diving destinations. The underwater ecosystem and biodiversity study has also been conducted before and after the installation of two ships including the study on environmental impact, marine biodiversity, and impact on natural coral reefs. Results, Observations, Conclusions The study in 2018 showing the increasing number of small fish from 10 species in 2011 to more than 60 species that reflected the increasing of marine ecology and biodiversity. A recent study shows that these man-made diving sites helped reducing number of touching coral reefs for 16,058,800 times since 2014. Moreover, there was no significant impact on the conditions of the seabed in every area studied. The number of tourists and divers are growing up 37.7% at Koh Ngam Noi, Chumphon province and 18.8% at Koh Tao, Surat Thani province which were able to boost community's economy. The project has generated income to local communities with more than 413 million THB (12.5 million USD) or 59 million THB (1.8 million USD) annually. In 2017, the project was measured by using Social Return on Investment (SROI) method with the satisfied outcome as 5.34:1 (THB) which means for every 1 THB invested in the program, created 5.34 THB in societal benefit. Moreover, the project has generated positive media exposure through activities with PR value of over 55.7 million THB (1.7 million USD) since 2011, raising awareness on marine ecology conservation and contribution to the company's reputation. Novel/Additive Information These battleship-man-made dive sites will be in service for more than 60 years and the study on marine ecology and biodiversity will be continuously conducted from time to time to ensure the sustainability in marine ecology. The achievement of this project benefits to petroleum industry by creating public perception and understanding of man-made reef which could be beneficial to Rigs-to-Reefs, as the sound practice of converting decommissioned offshore oil and petroleum rigs and platforms into artificial reefs.

The common reed, Phragmites australis, is a plant species quite similar to the currently used bio-based aggregates and available on most continents. The purpose of this work is to characterise this common reed and compare its properties to other plants already studied for building use. This study presents the different properties focussing on Phragmites australis chemical composition, hydrophobicity nature and how this character could be explained. To that end, wettability and also water adsorption measurements were carried out on plant flour and aggregates in comparison to miscanthus, wood and hemp shiv properties. Formulations based on reeds of different origins and using different binders (lime and earth) were tested in compression and with thermal conductivity measurements in order to evaluate the behaviour of the reed as a material for building use.

Current threats to coral reefs highlight the urgent need for effective research, monitoring, and management of these ecosystems. In this case study-based exercise, students will compare and contrast biodiversity information about Hawaiian reefs between traditional diver surveys and eDNA based applications, consider the benefits and limitations of each method for coral reef fish monitoring, and use these data to designate potential marine protected areas (MPAs). As part of this process, they will practice identifying species based on genetic sequencing data using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) of the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Streszczenie:
The worldwide market for ornamental saltwater invertebrates supplies the needs of millions of aquarium hobbyists, public exhibitions (i.e., zoos) universities and research institutions. With respect to reef building corals, it is estimated that more than half a million coral colonies/year from a total 93 genera, were exported globally during the period of 1985-1997. International value of retail sale of live coral trade alone is estimated as $78 million in 1997 (not including the illegally, widely smuggled material). The continuous, large-scale collection of marine organisms is responsible, in many places, for the destruction of coral reefs. The expected expansion of the trade further threatens these fragile habitats. While no true captive-bred corals are commercially available, our long-term goal is to develop ex situ inland farming of coral colonies that will circumvent the need for in situ collections and will provide domesticated specimens for the trade and for research. We simultaneously studied two model branching coral species, Stylophora pistillata (Pocilloporidae; in Israel) and Porites (Poritidae; in the US). The proposal included three specific aims: (a) To develop protocols for nubbins (small fragments, down to the size of a single polyp) usage in coral farming;(b) To address the significance of colony pattern formation to the coral trade; and (c) To develop the protocols of using nubbins in physiological and ecotoxicological assays (using oil dispersants, the expression of the stress protein HSP-70, household detergents, etc.). Ten scientific publications (published manuscripts, accepted for publications, submitted to scientific journals, in preparation), revealing results that were related to all three specific aims, originated from this BARD proposal. As a result of the work supported by the BARD, we have now, in hand, original and improved protocols for coral maintenance ex situ, proven expertise on manipulating coral colonies’ pattern formation and biological knowledge on island mariculture of reef corals (from Hawaii and from the Red Sea) amenable for the ornamental trade (for public and private aquaria use, for experimentation). At least one Israeli company (Red Sea Corals, Ltd., KibbutzSaar) is using our methodologies for further developing this new mariculture sector. We are now in the process of introducing the rationale and methodologies to Hawaiian private entities to expand dissemination of the research outcomes.
