When invited to write this retrospective review, I turned to my library shelves to pick up once moreThe Search for Order, 1877–1920.My faded paperback copy has a striking image of a railroad track, peeling off into the distance, past a mine site, and then disappearing over the horizon. The colors are shades of red, a black tinged in the glow of red, and a pale pink sky. The scene conveys both an unsettling alarm at the turmoil of society in the coloration, and a binding process through the railroad. I have just discovered that Saul Lambert (a noted illustrator) drew this evocative scene for Hill and Wang, and the job was exceedingly well done.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Objectives Higher red meat intake is associated with increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases, but causation of this relationships is unclear. This umbrella systematic review qualitatively assessed causality between red meat intake and cardiometabolic diseases. Methods Two researchers independently screened and crosschecked 524 articles from MEDLINE, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and CINAHL up to November 25,2019. Articles included were systematic reviews and meta-analyses of observational or experimental studies using healthy subjects aged 19+ years; included red meat (RM) intake [total (TRM), unprocessed (URM), or processed (PRM)] as an a priori independent variable; and reported outcomes or risk factors of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). Causality was assessed using Bradford Hill's Causation Criteria: 1) strength (relative risk, RR ≥1.2), 2) consistency (≥67% of assessments), 3) specificity, 4) temporality, 5) biological dose-response gradient 6) plausibility, 7) coherence, 8) experimental evidence and 9) analogy. Results In total, 22 articles (16 with CVD data; 11 with T2D data) were included. While TRM and URM were statistically positively associated with CVD incidence and mortality, these associations were consistently weak (RR < 1.2). The strength of positive associations between TRM and T2D incidence were inconsistent while the positive associations between URM and T2D incidence were consistently weak. Results from short-term randomized controlled trials assessing effects of TRM and URM on CVD and T2D risk factors were predominately null. These experimental findings indicate a lack of coherence and need for more research to determine causality of the positive associations described above. For both CVD and T2D, temporality was established with the inclusion of prospective study designs. Researchers have proposed plausible biological mechanisms and analogies but specificity is lacking. Insufficient data precluded assessing causality between PRM and CVD or T2D; research is needed. Conclusions Weakness of associations between total and unprocessed red meat intake and cardiometabolic diseases and lack of coherence with short-term experimental evidence on cardiometabolic disease risk factors reduces confidence that associations are causal. Motion verbs are often used to predicate entities such as roads, paths and the like as in “The road snakes to the port of Shakespeare Bay before climbing over the last hill to Picton” or “La carretera serpentea unos 30 kilómetros entre las montañas de la cordillera Nipe”. The verbs foreground the path configuration and dynamic rendering of things that cannot move – a phenomenon known as fictive motion (Langacker 1987; Talmy 1996). However, motion verbs are also frequent components in specialized contexts such as wine discourse, where they communicate different sensory experience of wines as in “Exotic, exuding red berry aromas and flavors that sneak up on you rather than hit you over the head”, “Bright and focused, offering delicious flavors that glide smoothly through the silky finish”, or “En boca tiene una magnifica entrada, aunque en el paso sobresalen rasgos vegetales y se precipita hacia un final en el que predominan notas tostadas y amargas”. Using two corpora of tasting notes written in English and in Spanish, I examine the motion expressions used to communicate the sensory experiences of the wines and explore the motivations for their use in descriptions of wines’ aromas, flavours and mouthfeel. Three questions are at the heart of this study. They are (i) what types of scenarios are described through motion expressions, (ii) what sensory perceptions do they describe, and (iii) what may the differences between English and Spanish be?

The Bugis Makassar Tribe Society is one of the tribes in Indonesia that has historical traces in the calendar system. The method of calculating people's time in ancient times was contained in the Ku Tika manuscript of the Bone Tribe which until now is no longer used and is only used as a historical source. Many of today's generations do not know and are no longer able to be read by various backgrounds in society in general. This is because the language used in the text is not the same as today's language, such as the Lontara Bugis language. Therefore, a study is needed regarding the contents of the manuscript so that it can be known by all audiences. This research is included in library research, namely research by collecting data and information from books, journals, and other document records. Based on the results of the research, it can be seen that the Ku Tika manuscript of the Bone tribe explains the meaning of hours, days and months. The time calculation method used is called Pakkita Esso which means the system of five times in one day.

PurposeUnder the transformational leadership of the University Librarian, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill University Libraries shifted from having an education- and programming-based “diversity committee” to a council of librarians advocating for action, anti-racism and social justice, both within our organization and across campus. As our University Librarian noted, “you cannot read your way out of racism.”Design/methodology/approachWith support from library leadership, the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Council has advanced anti-racism work in the libraries by serving as facilitators for a book discussion series, organizing a 21-day racial equity challenge, supporting staff in integrating anti-racism practices into their daily work through brown bag conversations, and facilitating the development of inclusion-focused performance management goals.FindingsWhat does an anti-racist library look like, and how does our organization envision this future? These questions anchor the IDEA Council's strategies. The libraries have witnessed a positive shift in staff participation: two-thirds of library staff participated in a Racial Equity Institute Groundwater presentation and in a library-wide book discussion series; approximately half the staff committed to our 21-day racial equity challenge. Participants were asked to reflect in conversation and through surveys.Originality/valueThe first wave of a newly established grant program funded eight staff-led projects to advance social justice in the libraries. Additional steps included caucusing by racial identity, staff-wide discussions about racial equity, and a second wave of funding for the grant program. The authors approach this work with cultural humility: seeking to learn from one another, our peers and fellow activists.

In “A Friendly Gathering: The Social Politics of Presentation Books and their Extra-Illustration in Horace Walpole’s Circle,” Lucy Peltz plays with the technical and metaphorical senses of “gathering” to reflect on the materiality and sociability of altered books in the Strawberry Hill set. The practice of extra-illustration consisted in unbinding the book, cutting loose the gatherings of leaves that make up its quires, in order to interleave them with additional pages, or to inlay each page into windows cut through larger sized paper. The process is captured in Walpole’s correspondence: “Mr Bull is honouring me, at least my Anecdotes of Painting, exceedingly. He has let every page into a pompous sheet, and is adding every print of portrait, building, etc., that I mention and that he can get, and specimens of all our engravers. It will make eight magnificent folios, and be a most valuable body of our arts.” Specimens collected and collated with the text anchor, document, and illustrate the words on the page. As a result, an identical multiple in a print run was turned into a unique object. Through the art of extraillustration, the extra-illustrator Richard Bull “erected for himself a monument of taste.” In its monumentalizing aims and dimensions, extra-illustration could be considered an antidote against ephemera, yet transience is inherent in its attempt to document the text with reproductions that might be dispersed. The concept runs the gamut, from Walpole’s paratexts—his title Fugitive Pieces in Verse and Prose (1758), which he presents as “trifles” and “idlenesses”—to his supposedly “diminutive” house, which he called “a paper Fabric and an assemblage of curious Trifles, made by an insignificant Man.” In this essay, I will read the practice of extra-illustration against the grain to recuperate the ephemeral side of “the pompous sheet,” the composite object unbound from its gatherings, and alternative forms of the page as a detached piece, a scrap, a caption appended to objects in the house. I will focus my discussion on two complementary book collections produced by Richard Bull: his extra-illustrated copy of Walpole’s Description of Strawberry Hill, now at the Lewis Walpole Library, and his curious compilation of occasional publications bound with the title-page A Collection of the Loose Pieces printed at Strawberry-Hill, and the alternative title Detached Pieces Printed at Strawberry Hill, now at the Huntington Library.

Streszczenie:
Background. The article deals with the reflection of the First World War of 1914–1918 in the monumental art of Poland. Therefore, memorial buildings and monuments are not only the realization of the creative plan of artists, i.e. their authors, but also a re-flection of a political course of the state, the experience gained, hopes, expectations, losses of people. That is why they allow us to understand the memory of the First World War in Poland. Purpose. The aim of the article is to study how the events of the First World War are reflected in the monumental art of Poland, and on this basis to consider the for-mation of historical memory, past and present practices of commemoration of the tragic events of 1914–1918. Results. The heroes and the memory of the victims of the First World War are re-spected in Poland, which in particular can be observed in the improvement of memorial complexes, memorials and other similar constructions. At the same time, the memory of the global military conflict is identified primarily with the restoration of independence. For most Poles, November 11, 1918 is associated not so much with the end of the Great War of 1914–1918 as with the birth of the Second Polish Republic of 1918–1939. Thus, the heroes of the military conflict are seen as the fighters for independence. On the other hand, the monumental buildings reflect the difficult path to independence, i.e. the division of Polish lands on the eve of the First World War and the difficulties in the establishing borders after its end. The First World War of 1914–1918 remains an important period in history. Commemorative practices, in general, coincide with those conducted in Western European countries, and, at the same time, they are mostly visible in the above position. This paper outlines the experience of four universities that collaborated on a pre-arrival shared reading project, the Big Read, in 2018/2019. They did so primarily to promote student engagement and retention and also to ease the transition into higher education, particularly for first-generation students, to promote staff connectedness, and to provide a USP (unique selling point) for their institution. The paper covers all the associated processes, from isolating the respective aims of the collaborators to the choosing and sharing of a single agreed title. In analysing the outcomes, recommendations are made for future cross-institutional projects of this kind.

During avian embryonic development, terminal erythroid differentiation occurs in the circulation. Some of the key events, such as the induction of erythroid 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate (2,3-BPG), carbonic anhydrase (CAII), and pyrimidine 5′-nucleotidase (P5N) synthesis are oxygen dependent (Baumann R, Haller EA, Schöning U, and Weber M, Dev Biol 116: 548–551, 1986; Dragon S and Baumann R, Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 280: R870–R878, 2001; Dragon S, Carey C, Martin K, and Baumann R, J Exp Biol202: 2787–2795, 1999; Dragon S, Glombitza S, Götz R, and Baumann R, Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 271: R982–R989, 1996; Dragon S, Hille R, Götz R, and Baumann R, Blood 91: 3052–3058, 1998; Million D, Zillner P, and Baumann R, Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 261: R1188–R1196, 1991) in an indirect way: hypoxia stimulates the release of norepinephrine (NE)/adenosine into the circulation (Dragon et al., J Exp Biol 202: 2787–2795, 1999; Dragon et al., Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 271: R982–R989, 1996). This leads via erythroid β-adrenergic/adenosine A2receptor activation to a cAMP signal inducing several proteins in a transcription-dependent manner (Dragon et al., Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 271: R982–R989, 1996; Dragon et al., Blood 91: 3052–3058, 1998; Glombitza S, Dragon S, Berghammer M, Pannermayr M, and Baumann R, Am J Physiol Regulatory Integrative Comp Physiol 271: R973–R981, 1996). To understand how the cAMP-dependent processes are initiated, we screened an erythroid cDNA library for cAMP-regulated genes. We detected three genes that were strongly upregulated (>5-fold) by cAMP in definitive and primitive red blood cells. They are homologous to the mammalian Tob, Ifr1, and Fos proteins. In addition, the genes are induced in the intact embryo during short-term hypoxia. Because the genes are regulators of proliferation and differentiation in other cell types, we suggest that cAMP might promote general differentiating processes in erythroid cells, thereby allowing adaptive modulation of the latest steps of erythroid differentiation during developmental hypoxia.

Masson, Sophie. The Phar Lap Mystery. Sydney, Aust.: Scholastic, 2010. Print The end notes of this historical novel describe the details of the remarkable Australian racehorse, Phar Lap, who, in the difficult times of the Great Depression, gave Australians something positive to think about. The cover image, from the collection of the State Library of Victoria, shows the big red horse in full stride, tail flying, jockey crouched behind his neck, reigns pulled tight. While the novel tracks alongside the historical story, it is a delightfully written account presented as a two-year diary of an eleven year-old girl. Diarist, Sally Fielding, is very conscious of the fact that she is writing for posterity. She begins her September 19, 1931 entry with “Hill Stakes Day, and the best day ever! I want to write down absolutely everything, to remember it all.” Author, Sophie Masson, who has written more than fifty juvenile novels, gives the reader a good snapshot of life in the 1930’s in urban Eastern Australia. From the “chooks” in the back yard, to the fancy hats of the well-to-do ladies at the Rosehill racecourse, to the seedy characters from the underbelly of the racing industry, Masson’s detailed descriptions help to draw us into Sally’s world. Aussie slang is sprinkled throughout the book to add to the “down-under” flavour. “Strewth”, which is a mild oath like “crikey” appears often. Sally refers to a young man with whom she is not impressed, as a “real mick”, denies that she’s a “stickybeak” when she really has been snooping and has a “slap up” lunch, which is a very good one. The story stretches over two years beginning with Sally’s private detective father first being engaged to try to find out who took a shot at Phar Lap and ends with Sally and her father going to America when Phar Lap is taken there to race. Sally’s diary chronicles her reactions to the various dangerous twists and turns of the case, her father’s on-again, off-again romance, and Sally’s general chatter about friends and events around her. The family’s economic struggles are ever-present. Occasionally readers are treated to a facsimile of a real newspaper article or a letter, which is “glued” into the volume, reinforcing the illusion that you really are reading someone’s diary. Overall this is a thoroughly enjoyable read that captures your attention and holds it through to the surprising ending. The Phar Lap Mystery will appeal to readers from pre-teens through adults and especially to readers who love horses. Highly recommended for junior high and high school libraries, as well as public libraries everywhere.Reviewer: Sandy CampbellHighly recommended: 4 out of 4 starsSandy is a Health Sciences Librarian at the University of Alberta, who has written hundreds of book reviews across many disciplines. Abstract Here I present a reading, from autopsy, of an unusually interesting lead tablet of the earlier fifth century from southeast Sicily, which is now in the Rare Book Room of the Library of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It is opisthographic, both sides inscribed in West Greek, one bearing a record, in the ‘blue’ alphabet (+ = chi), of a financial transaction that took place in the presence evidently of a proxenos, the guarantor being one Apellis. This Apellis later writes, or causes to be written, on the other side and in the earlier ‘red’ alphabet (↓ = chi), a magical curse to ensure [ineq], ‘because of his love/friendship for Eunikos’, that this Eunikos, a choregos, shall defeat other choregoi in a competition.

Investigation of passive steering concepts using MATLAB SIMULINK for their application in a modified Tram 2000 The rail vehicle industry is one of the most traditional and thus also rather conservative industries in mechanical engineering. Nevertheless, alongside innovative topics such as the advancing autonomisation or the establishment of hydrogen fuel cell technologies, there are also concepts for the active guidance of rail vehicles. As a young, up-and-coming startup, we at Traila are developing just such an active steering concept (Traila Active Steering), which, in addition to noise emissions, above all reduces wear in the rail-wheel contact. In our current project phase, we have taken over a tram type T2000 in cooperation with the Zurich Transport Authority (VBZ), with which we can now provide prototypical functional proof of our technology. Within the framework of safety-relevant investigations, passive control concepts as well as active control concepts were examined for the selfdeveloped, actively controlled bogie. In this presentation, different kinematics for passive control are investigated with regard to their adaptation for the Tram 2000, using a specially developed rail-wheel library in MATLAB SIMULINK. In addition to the dynamic investigations on the model, the presentation focuses in particular on an assessment of passive safety with the help of the tools available in MATLAB SIMULINK. It is shown how, based on hydraulic, mechanical, control and external libraries, a domain-spanning multi-physical model is built up as a virtual twin of the T2000, in particular of our modifications, and processed for use in a HIL test bench.
