Streszczenie:
Given that recovery of people with mental health challenges is often a personal experience inclusive of autonomy, the development and provision of recovery-oriented services may benefit from identification and discussion of potential ethical conflicts and challenges. This chapter includes a conceptual and theoretical analysis of ethics in relation to recovery from mental illness, and a literature review to identify known ethical conflicts or challenges. Proposed solutions include shared decision-making, community treatment orders, and psychiatric advance directives; however, there is a dearth of evidence on their effectiveness. Mental health agencies, as well as self-regulated professional colleges, may be a potential designate for the development of clinical practice guidelines to help identify and address common ethical conflicts in this area. Doing so may help both service users and service providers successfully navigate ethical challenges in a way that best promotes recovery.

Streszczenie:
Recovery after work is essential in order to stay energetic when facing work demands. This chapter discusses how unwinding and restoration processes after work relate to experiences at the work–family interface. Empirical studies have shown that specific activities (e.g., sport and exercise) and experiences (e.g., psychological detachment from work during nonwork time) are important to achieve recovery. Boundary management strategies at the work–family interface (e.g., a preference for segmentation) predict recovery experiences. Moreover, recovery experiences moderate the relationship between work–family conflict (particularly family-to-work conflict) and strain outcomes. This chapter presents directions for future research and highlights practical implications by describing what individuals, families, and organizations can do in order to foster recovery processes.

Streszczenie:
This chapter begins by contrasting Spencer’s view of natural selection with Darwin’s understanding of its “paramount power.” Darwin’s interpretation contains seeds of a defining mark of the modern evolutionary synthesis: Adaptation is necessarily a consequence of natural selection working as a “creative” factor over multiple generations. The chapter distinguishes between several versions of the modern synthesis in order to argue that some are less at odds than others with the current turn toward development and in order to suggest that allowing ontogeny to be the generative locus of (much) selectable variation makes for more continuity between the developmentalist turn and the modern synthesis than is sometimes thought. Shifting “adaptation” from trans-generational populations to ontogenetically construed organisms is in tension with the modern evolutionary synthesis, but not as much as some believe.

Outreach is particularly needed for patients with limited insight into their need for treatment. This chapter examines the concept of insight and the practices used to support it and to ensure treatment despite its limitations. Balancing individual liberty and recovery against the need for effective treatment is a constant challenge for outreach workers. Internationally, levels of compulsion are increasing. Compulsion has expanded beyond the hospital into the community despite the absence of evidence that such community treatment orders (CTOs) have any significant benefits for patients. Different forms of informal coercion, including leverage, are described along with practices to protect the therapeutic relationship when compulsion has to be used. The power imbalance in the therapeutic relationship is explored and the risks for unwitting abuse noted.

Streszczenie:
Queensland is home to 70% of Australia’s native mammals (226 species), over 70% of native birds (630 species), just over half of the nation’s native reptiles (485) and native frogs (127), and more than 11 000 native plant species. Hundreds of these have a threatened status in Queensland. In order for Queensland to maintain and recover a healthy biodiversity we must address the serious problems faced by our natural environment – habitat loss, inappropriate land management, change in fire regimes, pollution of natural resources, proliferation of invasive species and climate change. This book features up-to-date distribution data, photos and maps for most of Queensland’s threatened animals. It also includes a comprehensive list of resources, with key state, national and international organisations involved in the recovery and management of threatened species. Queensland's Threatened Animals will provide vital information to scientists, educators, business entities, government agencies, students, community groups, environmental NGOs, regional NRMs and potential volunteers.

Streszczenie:
Ancient authors commonly compared writing with painting. The sculpting of the soul was a common philosophical theme. This book takes its starting-point from such figures to recover a sense of ancient authorship as craft. The ancient concept of craft (ars, technē) spans ‘high’ or ‘fine’ art and practical or applied arts. It unites the beautiful and the useful. It includes both skills or practices (like medicine and music) and productive arts like painting, sculpting, and the composition of texts. By using craft as a guiding concept for understanding fourth-century Christian authorship, this book recovers a sense of them engaged in a shared practice which is both beautiful and theologically useful, which shapes souls but which is also engaged in the production of texts. It focuses on Greek writers, especially the Cappadocians (Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Gregory of Nyssa) and John Chrysostom, all of whom were trained in rhetoric. Through a detailed examination of their use of two particular literary techniques—ekphrasis and prosōpopoeia—it shows how they adapt and experiment with them, in order to make theological arguments and in order to evoke an active response from their readership.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This chapter examines the funding of a bank recovery or resolution under the Bank Recovery and Resolution Directive (BRRD) and the associated Single Resolution Regulation (SRR). The BRRD assures that bank problems have a minimum impact on the wider economy and on the living conditions and standards of ordinary people. Meanwhile, the SRR sets out how the BRRD is to be applied for the countries participating in the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). The chapter explores the problems of assessing the costs of resolving failing banks. It explains the New Zealand scheme and the authorities’ assessment of the potential impact of various resolution and recovery measures on the economy. It also discusses the ways in which the BRRD/SRR might be implemented in order to minimize the risks to society at large.

Streszczenie:
The book covers a topic that is often overlooked in the literature: How people with serious mental illnesses (i.e., schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression) come to recognize and deal with the symptoms of a mental illness in order to promote recovery. Per the recovery movement in mental health, recovery is understood as not simply symptom elimination, but the process of living a meaningful and satisfying life in the face of mental illness. Acceptance of Mental Illness draws from research to provide educators, clinicians, researchers, and consumers with an understanding of the multidimensional process of acceptance of mental illness in order to support people across culturally diverse groups to experience empowerment, mental wellness, and growth. Chapters focus on providing a historical overview of the treatment of people with mental illness, examining the acceptance process, and exploring the experience of acceptance among women, men, racial–ethnic minorities, and LGBT individuals with serious mental illnesses. The book is a useful tool for mental health educators and providers, with each chapter containing case studies, clinical strategies lists, discussion questions, experiential activities, diagrams, and worksheets that can be completed with clients, students, and peers.

Streszczenie:
The clinician’s goal for every adult with serious mental illness should be recovery, moving beyond symptom control toward the promotion of an individual’s functioning, autonomy, and sense of purpose. This chapter highlights some of the nonpharmacological, evidence-based practices that have been shown to further recovery for adults with serious mental illness. The case-based discussion highlights illness management, supported employment, supported housing, assertive community treatment, mobile crisis teams, cognitive–behavioral therapy for psychosis, peer support, and clubhouses as best practice models of care. Strategies to enhance medication adherence are discussed. The use of court-ordered assisted outpatient treatment as a strategy to prevent hospitalizations is also explored.

This chapter provides an overview of the development and expansion of critical care, to include early intervention and enhancement of recovery. This is based on the patient’s acuity and need for intervention rather than their location. It includes early recognition of, and response to, acute deterioration in patients in order to prevent irreversible organ damage or death. The use of tools such as the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) to identify these patients is described. The chapter covers the critical care outreach and medical emergency team concepts, as well as surviving sepsis and avoiding acute kidney injury initiatives. Peri-operative optimization to mitigate the impact of surgery and the need to follow up patients post-critical care admission to enhance recovery and prevent re-admission are also included.
