Streszczenie:
Reconciliation is a novel that focuses on JoAnna Morgan, a thirty-two-year-old woman living in Lexington, Kentucky. Already struggling with her job as the director of a local performing arts center, JoAnnaâs world is thrown into disarray when her parents announce they have decided to leave their current spouses and reunite more than twenty years after their acrimonious marriage ended. Their reconciliation causes painful memories from the past to resurface for JoAnna and her older brother, Gregg. This personal crisis further jeopardizes JoAnnaâs job because her fatherâs wife is the daughter of an influential member of the theaterâs board of directors. In the midst of trying to cope with the repercussions of her parentsâ decision, JoAnnaâs former boyfriend, Karl, comes back into her life. As the novel progresses, JoAnna confronts her past and makes choices that will alter her future.

Streszczenie:
In this study in political theory I develop a political conception of reconciliation. In the late twentieth century, the notion of reconciliation became prominent in the political discourse of many polities divided by grave state wrongs. Reconciliation is an inherently political aspiration since it is oriented to the constitution of a “we” to underwrite the legitimacy of shared public institutions. Yet the logic of reconciliation, which tends toward harmony and closure, also seems at odds with politics, which invariably entails plurality and conflict. The work of Carl Schmitt provides a point of departure for considering the political nature of reconciliation and defining the problem of how a relation of enmity might be transformed into one of civic friendship. In the first half of the thesis I examine the liberal ideal of toleration (articulated by John Locke) and the communitarian ideal of recognition (articulated by Charles Taylor) as political ethics that might animate reconciliation. Against toleration and recognition, I turn to Hannah Arendt’s ethic of worldliness to develop a theory of political reconciliation. Reconciliation, on this account, entails a difficult mode of interaction between former enemies that seeks to enclose both within a common horizon of understanding while affirming the possibility of calling any such shared horizon into question. In the second half of the thesis, I draw on an interdisciplinary literature concerning transitional justice to develop this theory of political reconciliation. Here I examine the implications of an Arendtian account of the political for how we should think about four key issues confronting societies divided by past wrongs: the constitution of a political association that might accommodate former enemies; political grounds for forgiveness; the collective responsibility of those implicated in state wrongs and; coming to terms with the past through remembrance of past wrongs. Two central arguments recur throughout the thesis. First, we should affirm reconciliation as a project that opens a space for politics by framing an encounter between enemies in which they might debate the possibility and terms of their association. Yet, we must also invoke politics to resist the tendency inherent in the logic of reconciliation to bring to a close what should remain open, incomplete, contestable. Second, and following from this, in conceiving reconciliation politically we must reverse the order of our moral thinking. It is a political mistake to presuppose a moral community that must be restored between those alienated by past wrongs. Political reconciliation would never get off the ground if it required agreement on shared norms and the facts of wrongdoing in order to initiate the return of the wrongdoers to community with those wronged. Rather, it must begin with the constitution of space for politics and the invocation of a “we” that is not-yet and proceed from this faith in community toward the possibility of a shared understanding of what went before.

Streszczenie:
Living in the age of "Big Data" is both a blessing and a curse. On he one hand, the raw data can be analysed and then used for weather redictions, user recommendations, targeted advertising and more. On he other hand, when data is aggregated from multiple sources, there is no guarantee that each source has stored the data in a standardized or even compatible format to what is required by the application. So there is a need to parse the available data and convert it to the desired form. Here is where the problems start to arise: often the correspondences are not quite so straightforward between data instances that belong to the same domain, but come from different sources. For example, in the film industry, information about movies (cast, characters, ratings etc.) can be found on numerous websites such as IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes. Finding and matching all the data referring to the same movie is a challenge. The aim of this project is to select the most efficient algorithm to correlate movie related information gathered from various websites automatically. We have implemented a flexible application that allows us to make the performance comparison of multiple algorithms based on machine learning techniques. According to our experimental results, a well chosen set of rules is on par with the results from a neural network, these two proving to be the most effective classifiers for records with movie information as content.

This thesis is looking at the many perspectives that are held by members of our community on the topic of Reconciliation. Views on Reconciliation have been seen thus far in very different lights, some very positive and some not so positive. A better understanding of what Reconciliation means from both Aboriginal and non Aboriginal viewpoints, provides us with a greater knowledge and further understanding of the politics impacting upon Indigenous peoples lives on a daily basis. The thesis looks at the impacts of racism and its role in Reconciliation, it provides us with questions on ownership and motivations of those involved and forces us to look at ideologies to the likes of, One Nation and issues of identity that currently face Australians. The thesis looks at both the positive and negative perspectives on Reconciliation and explores alternatives such as 'treaty', looking at the benefits of such alternatives in comparison with the Reconciliation Process. The thesis looks at the questions of appropriateness of programs being implemented into Indigenous communities and encourages us to question not only the Reconciliation Process but also other strategies and that have been and are currently being implemented upon Indigenous communities that run on parallels to Reconciliation. Thus the thesis attempts to bring about a greater understanding on Reconciliation to the researcher personally, yet it is with the hope and intention that this research brings about clarity to others who are also working towards forming their own understanding of what the Reconciliation process means, in its ideologies, processes and outcomes.

Reconciliation is generally studied from the perspective of how the process affects the individual. This study on the contrary, seeks to explain how the individual expectation of the process affects its outcome by investigating the relationship between motives to participate and the outcome of acceptance for your former adversary. A research gap has been identified in studying individual motives for participating in reconciliation processes between social factors as a facilitator for reconciliation and the actual joining of a process. Studying this gap has resulted in support for the hypothesis that individuals with the motive to tell the truth in a process experience high levels of acceptance towards their former adversaries, compared to individuals who participate in a process with the motive of holding the other party accountable for past sufferings. Using the method of in-depth interviews in Cambodia and thematic analysis reveals the main finding that acceptance is facilitated by the mechanisms of acknowledgment and understanding of the other party in combination with active interaction between the parties. This study presents three main recommendations for future ideas and reconciling establishments.

Streszczenie:

Since the late 1980s, Canadian museum personnel have been actively engaged in collaboration with Aboriginal communities on issues to do with exhibition design and collections management. Despite these collaborative successes, tensions between museum employees and Aboriginal community members are commonplace, indicating that problems still remain within the relationships that have developed.

This thesis examines the implications of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada for the future of museum practice. It argues that unresolved colonial trauma is preventing those in the museum field from moving past an initial phase of relationshipbuilding to a successful era of partnership. When viewed through the lens of trauma, the museum field is heavily influenced by denial on the part of museum personnel as to the extent of violence committed against Aboriginal peoples at Indian Residential Schools and the resulting level of dysfunction present in current relationships between Aboriginal communities and non-Aboriginal museum employees. I provide a revised account of Canadian history, which includes the aspects of colonialism that are most often censored, in order to situate these problems as part of the historical trauma that is deeply embedded in Canadian society itself.

John Ralston Saul’s concept of the Métis nation is used as a framework for reconciliation, portraying Canada as a country that is heavily influenced by its Aboriginal origins despite the majority belief that the national culture has been derived from European social values. As a response to this proposition, the Circle is presented as the primary Canadian philosophical tenet that should guide both museum practice and Canadian society in the future.

Streszczenie:
This thesis aims to recover the central importance of the deliberative aspect of democracy which recent liberal theorising has neglected, and to capture common intuitions about the foundational nature of democratic institutions. The fundamental problem of political philosophy is that of justifying principles or institutions which can reconcile individuals and the political community on a moral basis. The use of political authority is morally legitimate when it is grounded upon such a reconciliation. Attempts to justify as legitimate a liberal constitutional framework are shown to fail, whether carried out on the basis of membership of a community, or as given by principles of justice, or on the grounds of utilitarianism or a perfectionist ideal. All these approaches must rely ultimately on a claim that there is or can be a consensus around some conception of morality or the good. However, none of them is entitled to claim that such a consensus can be reached without there already being in place a political process through which we can discover or construct a consensus, or find a way to go on when disagreement persists. The question then arises of how such a ground-level political framework can be justified and precisely what form it takes. The starting point is a notion of agents each with their own views about social and political issues. An argument is constructed from the logic of having such views to the conclusion that each agent has obligations to be prepared to participate in public discussion, and to accept democratic political decisions which are based upon such discussions. Failure to do so is self-undermining. Political legitimacy resides in the achievement of reconciling individuals to collective decisions. The practical implications of this notion of deliberative democracy for institutions and for individuals are drawn out.

The reconciliation of architectural idea and built form is accomplished by the materialization of the idea through the use of specific materials with their inherent qualities and restrictions. The learning begins when one sees these restrictions not as a hinderance to the idea, but that which can reveal the very essence of Architecture. The virtue of this architecture of reconciliation lies in its ability to help Man understand his surroundings and place in the world at large. This is accomplished by bringing an awareness and appreciation of the tangible, physical world to the individual. However, we must use not only our eyes, but all of our senses to truly know a place. It is in this knowing, this understanding, that one is able to dwell. In dwelling one finds true peace.

Streszczenie:
In a modern chemical plant, the implementation of a distributed control system leads to a large number of measurements that are available online for process monitoring, control, optimization and management decision making. Unfortunately, these measurements often contain errors that degrade the information quality obtained from the raw data. This thesis is dedicated to the development of dynamic data reconciliation (DDR) algorithms for the optimal estimation of variables in dynamic processes. More importantly, the DDR algorithms were implemented within the structures of feedback control loops, and the performance of the DDR algorithms as well as the controllers was quantitatively assessed via a series of process simulations. The DDR algorithms, acting as digital filters, were compared to commonly used filters, such as the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA), moving average (MA), Kalman and extended Kalman filters. Methodologies to use the DDR algorithms to deal with autocorrelated noise were also investigated. The DDR algorithms integrate information from both measurements and process dynamic models such that, at each sampling time, the estimates obtained by the DDR algorithms provide more precise representations of the current state of the process. Three DDR algorithms were developed, namely, nonlinear programming (NLP) based DDR, predictor-corrector based DDR, and autoassociative neural network (AANN) based DDR. Evaluations of these DDR algorithms were conducted via simulations of three chemical processes, namely a cylindrical storage tank, a spherical storage tank and a binary distillation column. Results demonstrated that the DDR algorithms are efficient and effective tools for the estimation of dynamic processes. They perform significantly better than the EWMA and MA filters. Furthermore, compared to the Kalman filter, the DDR algorithm is easier to understand and to implement. Studies also showed that the structure of process models has considerable impact on the performance of the DDR. The use of the DDR algorithms embedded in feedback control loops significantly enhanced the controller performance. For example, the cost function of the control system in the distillation column was reduced by 28∼39% when linear, adaptive linear and nonlinear DDR algorithms were used. The cost function of the controller in the cylindrical storage tank was reduced by 46% using DDR, while it was reduced by 33% when using a EWMA filter.

Streszczenie:
This study aimed to examine whether mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx) reconcile their conflicts. The data were collected from a captive group of nine mandrills (5 males and 4 females) at the Lowry Park Zoo that ranged in age from 3 to 16 years at the time of study. After a conflict was observed, the behavior of one of the two former opponents was documented for a period of ten minutes using continuous recording methods. On the next possible observation day, at the same time of the previous conflict, the behavior of the same individual was recorded for an additional ten minutes. Former opponents exchanged peaceful or affiliative signals sooner after a conflict than during control periods. These post-conflict signals were selectively directed towards former opponents, and were most likely to be exchanged in the first two minutes after a conflict's termination. The silent bared-teeth face comprised 62.5% of the first peaceful interactions between former opponents. The best predictor of the likelihood of reconciliation was the dyad's baseline rate of silent bared-teeth face exchange. Mandrill dyads with higher rates of silent bared-teeth face exchange at baseline had higher conflict rates and spent less time in non-aggressive proximity than those with lower rates of silent bared-teeth face exchange. These results are consistent with the Insecure Relationship Hypothesis, which posits that individuals with insecure relationships are more likely to reconcile because their relationships are more likely to be damaged by a conflict than those with secure relationships. The exchange of peaceful post-conflict signals did not appear to have an effect on the behavior of the former opponents.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation introduces Inverse Synthetic Array Reconciliation Tomography (ISART), an algorithm that exploits the short-time accuracy of inertial navigation systems (INS) and the time-stability of radio frequency (RF) positioning algorithms to achieve a high level of positioning accuracy. Novel array processing and data fusion techniques are employed to acheive performance far greater than RF and INS algorithms previously developed. This research is directed toward addressing the need for a viable tracking solution for firefighters and other first responders in urban and indoor environments. The approaches in this work are fundamentally different from other RF-INS fusion approaches, in the way we combine INS data with RF data. Rather than simply fusing the measurements from two systems that are estimating position (or states directly related to position) we use the inertial navigation data to improve the accuracy of our RF estimates at the signal level, before integrating them into an overall fusion system through the use of an extended Kalman filter (EKF). This work outlines the theoretical basis for ISART, and shows the results of simulations that support the claimed accuracy improvement of the ISART algorithm over existing methods. The viability of ISART in real world settings is then examined through the results of three field tests what were conducted in support of this research.

In current higher education paradigms, art and science are often siloed fields rather than subjects that inform each other. This dichotomy or hyper-specialization of art and science in higher education is a result of the industrial revolution with production as the telos. The product of this educational paradigm divorces art and science from each other. But how should we educate students for jobs that don't exist today? What learning environments are most conducive to creativity and innovation? What are the potential benefits of teaching art and science as one? What disciplines would work best together? Are their patterns in ones perception of the relationship between art and science? Are trans-disciplinary learning environments a possibility or an ideal? This thesis investigates the hypothesis that the walls between art and science exist only in our minds. This research consists of 27 one-on-one interviews conducted with students, professors and other higher education affiliates, who visualize the relationship between art and science.) The interviews use everyday objects as prompts to build a baseline to the investigation. The instrument consisted of seven questions that investigated if the use of quotidian, everyday, objects as prompts expose the false dichotomy between art and science. Additionally, the research tries to uncover the possible patterns that exist in how disciplines visualize/diagram the relationship between art and science. Each participant was asked to draw how they view the relationship between art and science. The researcher used these drawings as data points to lead the analysis. The researcher developed a series of field notes (thinking sketches) as interpretations of the themes of the participant's drawings. These thinking sketches were then translated into four thinking prototypes (three-dimensional models) which later inform the development of four simple yet profound findings called quotidian proverbs.

Measurement noise reduction and parameter estimation is a topic of central importance in plant control. The complexity of real world plants and the working conditions in practice require robust real-time algorithms which are easy to implement, simple to use and economic in computer ressources. The state of the art is given by the novel approach of Liebman et al. called the NDDR (nonlinear dynamic data reconciliation) which is based on nonlinear dynamic programming. We present in the present paper a new algorithm based more traditionally on gradient descent methods supplemented with a self control of the parameters of the algorithm. It uses an iterative method for the rectification and correction of state variables and system parameters, what makes it a true on-line algorithm. Despite its simplicity, the perfomance of the new algorithm proved superior to that of the NDDR in the applications considered so far.

The Engineering Pilot plant at Murdoch University is one of the unique process facilities that currently exists in any universities in Australia. It provides an opportunity for Instrumentation and Control engineering students studying at Murdoch University to explore various control methods and strategies to extend their range of knowledge in this area with the aid of physical instruments and software provided in the pilot plant. The purpose of this thesis project is to devise a strategy to improve the process measurements in the pilot plant through investigation of theory and implementation of Steady State Data Reconciliation and Online Dynamic Data reconciliation and to observe and testify if data reconciliation can improve process control performance with a more accurate set of measurements This project has been divided into three different stages with the first stage being, the understanding of data reconciliation, understanding of DR using existing case studies, followed by the investigation of the physical implementation and foundation work of data reconciliation in the pilot plant, and finally the testing and conclusion as to whether or not data reconciliation can improve the process measurements and consequently the control results. Results of the implementation of data reconciliation indicated the improvement of process measurements. Non-Linear Tank and Needle Tank have shown considerable measurement improvement with the implementation of data reconciliation on the measuring variables of both tanks. Flow rate in, flow rate out, and levels of both tanks were monitored and measured except the flow going into Non-linear Tank were estimated as there were no measuring device available for that particular variable. Ball Mill Tank and Cyclone Underflow Tank were also investigated with a recycle stream, steady state data reconciliation have also been implemented at this process system and helps to improve a better understanding of data reconciliation applications. Dynamic data reconciliation were also implemented at the Needle Tank in the pilot plant for case study investigation, the results obtained is of what was expected and proved that DDR can provide significant contribution in terms of improving process control performance of the process system in the future.

Streszczenie:
Medication therapy is the most prevalent and critical intervention of health delivery and the source of most errors in healthcare. Medication errors and associated adverse drug events (ADE) have serious health and economic ramifications, and in elderly patients ADE are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Medication reconciliation is the process of evaluating current medication treatment to manage the risk and optimize the outcomes of medication treatment by detecting, solving, and preventing ADEs. This education project answered the question whether education provided to long term care staff would improve knowledge of medication reconciliation and be retained over time. The education program was developed through results of a literature search to identify evidence-based standards for medication reconciliation. The guiding theory for program was Kurt Lewin's theory of planned change. The test was developed on the medication reconciliation content and arrangements made for each of the 30 participants who were RNs, LPNs, and CMAs to take the test before and after the education program and again at 30 and 45 days. Results showed statistically significant improvement (p < 0.05) with knowledge of medication reconciliation retained at 30- and 45-days post intervention. Positive social change is possible as nurses and CMAs in the long-term care facility use the knowledge of medication reconciliation to improve patient medication safety for the long-term care residences in the facility. Through appropriate reconciliation, medication errors and ADEs can be reduced or prevented and patient outcomes improved.

Throughout human history conflicts have always been present in societies, some of which are on-going and some are transformed. Conflict has a major effect on all aspects of society and its people. The aim of this thesis is to seek answers on how people confront the dark past peacefully in terms of reconciliation after a conflict. The prevalence of conflict sparked the interest in understanding how a society manages to constantly rebuild its future despite its political hardships in its past. To answer this question, I decided to investigate the role of education. This thesis investigates the phenomenon of reconciliation and education in a conflict-affected society. The research questions concentrate on the definition and characteristics of reconciliation and explore validations of its importance. The link between reconciliation and education is investigated and later discussed whilst demonstrating an example of a reconciliation process and its educational characteristics in Northern Uganda. The research is conducted by using the method of descriptive literary overview, gathering information from various sources of books, declarations and publications. In addition to the literary data, critical discussion by the researcher is posited. The overall finding of the thesis was the emphasis on uniqueness of every conflict and the following reconciliation process. The research finds recurring themes in methods of reconciliation processes, e.g. ensuring the locality of the process and the presence of a third party. The research findings are somewhat adaptable to different settings, from large-scale to small-scale settings, such as schools. The thesis invites the reader to inspect these characteristics critically and consider their usefulness to one’s own work as an educator when facing a conflict situation.

Streszczenie:
The use of reason appears to lead to divergent conclusions for what is right and what is good in human action. While reason is a central feature in ethical theory, there is a problem when that central feature does not lead to consistent conclusions about how to act in a given situation. Several philosophers have attempted to combine previous moral theories in order to provide a better template for human action. I contend that the use of reason is of vital import when determining the foundation for moral action and that moral theories, to be consistent with reason, should incorporate aspects of both non-consequentialist and consequentialist ethical theories. I argue that there is a unifying foundation presupposed by the moral theories of both Immanuel Kant and John Stuart Mill. Through the use of reason the theories of Kant and Mill can be reconciled to show that these theories can be combined when understanding the basic foundation that they share.

Streszczenie:
The foundational hypothesis to this study is that congregations which have a healthy perception and a greater understanding of conflict will develop more effective responses to conflict that will translate into more effective conflict resolution and reconciliation. The process and sustainability of the development of a missional church, the context of the study, is pregnant with potential conflict. Untamed conflict has the propensity to retard, jeopardise or even destroy the development of a missional church. When conflict arises, it must be understood and dealt with theologically. The inherent problem is that conflict appears to be neither understood nor appreciated sociologically and theologically. This knowledge and praxis vacuum has the potential for conflict to translate into inappropriate or ineffective responses that do not always make for effective resolution and reconciliation. The research focuses mainly on an empirical study based on the four practical theological questions of Osmer (2008). Participants for this study were randomly selected from specific sectors of Methodist congregations in the wider Pretoria area. The research explores congregants’ perceptions, understanding and views of conflict; their responses to conflict; and some felt and observed outcomes of conflict. The presupposition is that the development of the local missional church would be more effective and efficient when the management and process of conflict resolution and reconciliation are well led and well managed. This study confirmed that conflict, despite its normalcy and necessity, carries a negative undertone and is mostly avoided in congregations. This is compounded by the evidence that there is little, if any, theological or scriptural understanding of conflict. There is also no indication that churches intentionally and purposefully educate their members to appreciate and understand conflict. In so doing, churches are harming their innate calling as the glory and manifestation of God’s divine grace through faith communities for the transformation of all peoples. Yet, the church understands the dangers of unhealthy conflict, and on occasion even expects conflict to arise, although deeming it inappropriate. Practical theological discernment is sought as to why this may be so and remedial action is proposed to address the problem of conflict within congregations.

Data reconciliation is a method of improving the quality of data obtained from automated measurements in chemical plants. All measuring instruments are subject to error. These measurement errors degrade the quality of the data, resulting in inconsistencies in the material and energy balance calculations. Since important decisions are based on the measurements it is essential that the most accurate data possible, be presented. Data reconciliation attempts to minimize these measurement errors by fitting all the measurements to a least-squares model, constrained by the material and energy balance equations. The resulting set of reconciled measurements do not cause any inconsistencies in the balance equations and contain minimum measurement error. Two types of measurement error can occur; random noise and gross errors. If gross errors exist in the measurements they must be identified and removed before data reconciliation is applied to the system. The presence of gross errors invalidates the statistical basis of data reconciliation and corrupts the results obtained. Gross error detection is traditionally performed using statistical tests coupled with serial elimination search algorithms. The statistical 'tests are based on either the measurement adjustment performed by data reconciliation or the balance equations' residuals. A by-product of data reconciliation, obtained with very little additional effort, is the classification of the system variables. Unmeasured variables may be classified as either observable or unobservable. An unmeasured variable is said to be unobservable if a feasible change in its value is possible without being detected by the measurement instruments. Unmeasured variables which are not unobservable are observable. Measured variables may be classified as either redundant, nonredundant or having a specified degree of redundancy. Nonredundant variables are those which upon deletion of the corresponding measurements, become unobservable. The remaining measured variables are redundant. Measured variables with a degree of redundancy equal to one, are redundant variables that retain their redundancy in the event of a failure in any one of the remaining measurement instruments.

ABSTRACT This study sets out the understanding of the type of reconciliation approach used in Somalia, the participating leaders’ understanding, attitudes and actions towards the reconciliation as well as the role of civil society involved in the reconciliation in Somalia. the study used a qualitative abductive desk research methodology. The results based on secondary data drawn from the literature while the analysis has been used on John Paul Lederaches’ reconciliation approaches pyramid. The main findings explain that one level approach of reconciliation has been employed in Somalia, the former leaders' understanding, attitudes and actions have contributed to deepen the conflict, while the current leader's understanding, attitudes and actions seems to help promote national reconciliation in the country and the civil society role has been gradually mounting as the country has been under post conflict peacebuilding. The study identified three main issue are among the determinants of the reconciliation failure in Somalia firstly Somali protracted conflict would not have resisted if for example, the UN and international community had learned from the successful pragmatic reconciliations in the country. Secondly, it was also noted that as long as the supremacy of the clan politics continued, the role of civil society especially women would be compromised. And finally, the risk of reconciliation is greater in the involvement of the unscrupulous leaders.

Streszczenie:
In mineral processing, one of the most important and versatile separation methods is flotation. Flotation utilizes the different surface properties of the valuable minerals in the ore to separate them from the less valuable gangue material in the ore. Crushed and ground ore is mixed with water and fed into flotation tanks. In the flotation tanks, the particles of valuable mineral are made hydrophobic. That way, they can be floated by attaching to air bubbles and gather on top of the flotation tank as froth. This froth, containing higher concentrations of valuable mineral, is recovered and then processed further. The flotation circuit is controlled and maintained using measurements on the mass flows and grades of different materials. Due to economical, practical, and technological limitations, these measurements are performed at a chosen number of points in the circuit and at discrete points in time. Poor measurement data can have devastating consequences if the operators are left with limited information and errors in the circuit remain undetected. The accuracy of the acquired measurements is improved by performing mass balance and reconciliation. Traditionally, mass balance uses the sum of the total mass flows and the average grades over long times to avoid including the internal mass of the circuit in the calculations. It is desirable to perform mass balance directly to allow for faster intervention if any failures occur in the circuit during the on-line process. This report describes an on-line dynamic approach towards mass balancing and reconciliation of the mass flows and grades in a flotation circuit. Here, physical models of the flotation circuit are used to construct mass balance constraints using interpolation and test functions and the mass balance problem is posed as an optimization problem. The optimization problem is to adjust the assay such that the residual, the difference between the measured and the adjusted assay, is minimized while maintaining mass balance. An implementation in MATLAB and tests on synthetic data show that the dynamic formulation of mass balance does adjust 'erroneous' measurements such that mass balance is fulfilled. Given this result, there are still important aspects of the implementation that have to be addressed. The model uses the unknown and cell specific parameters flotation rate and recovery. Thus, these must be found or properly modeled. This report proposes a possible model for flotation rate as well as a strategy to find the recovery. The requirements of accuracy and speed of the implementation are also discussed. Possible next steps of this project is to further confirm a time effective implementation using synthetic data. Consequently, the implementation can be adapted for natural data in order to verify correctness of models.

Polypharmacy entails the use of multiple drugs taken at the same time to manage the various comorbidities common among elderly patients. Polypharmacy is associated with increased health care spending due to drug duplication, adverse drug events, and medication noncompliance. Medication reconciliation has been shown to reduce the problems seen with polypharmacy. The purpose of this project was to review published evidence to develop a staff education program on medication reconciliation in a primary care setting and determine the efficacy of the program in relation to staff confidence and knowledge levels concerning medication reconciliation. The project was guided by Nola Pender's health promotion model. The education program was modeled after a medical staff education program on medication reconciliation and included a medication assessment questionnaire and its use when evaluating a patient's medications. The pretest and posttest questionnaire obtained from the education materials was administered to clinical staff at the practice site before and after presenting the education material. Data were analyzed for statistical changes after the education program using a t test. Results showed that participants increased their confidence and knowledge of medication reconciliation from an average score of 2.19 (SD 0.20) before the education to 4.37 (SD 0.12) (p < 0.001) on a 5-point confidence scale after the education. This staff education program will promote positive social change by increasing nurses' knowledge and confidence of medication reconciliation and potentially reducing the incidence of polypharmacy and its negative effects among the elderly patients.

The field of reconciliation literature has grown substantially since the 1990s, and the concept of reconciliation is now associated with many different definitions and actions in the peace building process. In the diverse field of literature on reconciliation authors highlight different aspects as most important which complicates the knowledge of what a successful reconciliation process really is. To have a better understanding of the field of reconciliation and what affects an author, to argue for their specific theory this study will, through the approach of abductive reasoning, research whether the background of an author affects what they research. To represent the field of reconciliation literature an expert sampling of five authors who are all highly referenced and influence the field will be used. To answer the research objective an analytical frame work together with a hermeneutic text analysis will be applied to each authors text to highlight their arguments. Finally the authors arguments and background will be analyzed to find patterns in the texts which could be compared with possible connections or patterns in the authors background. Based on this study the result shows that authors with a background, which is not only academic might have another approach to understanding the reconciliation process but their arguments show no clear patterns which can be connected to the authors background, however understanding why an author argues is important to understand what kind of people are affecting the actions of reconciliation. This study looked at five authors who all represent a very similar background and arguments which can show a tendency in reconciliation literature that the most distinguished authors all share the same background and therefore might not provide any new insight to the field.

This study explores and critically examines the role of indigenous mechanisms (the Inter-Tribal Reconciliation Conferences-ITRCs) in resolving tribal conflicts in South Darfur State of Western Sudan. The fundamental question raised by this study is: have these reconciliation conferences- 1989-2009- been able to address the root causes of the tribal conflicts and are they capable of serving the same role that they once did? Tribal leadership structures, such as Native Administration (NA) and their mechanisms of conflict resolution/management in Darfur, have been subjected to highly significant changes over time. The question is to what extent these changes further fuelled tribal conflicts and/or have negatively affected the capability of the NA and the ITRCs to deal with these conflicts? This thesis relies on archive records and reports of the ITRCs and data generated through interviews conducted with key informants. Through a detailed analysis the study: 1) presents a detailed account of the major conflicts and their causes in South Darfur; 2) identifies the changing identities of the protagonists and of the perceived causes; 3) assesses the effectiveness of the agreements reached by these conferences when considered alongside the causes identified. Analysis of the ITRCs shows that tribal conflicts in Darfur (from1980s), and South Darfur in particular, were connected to the wider political conflict in the Sudan and the region respectively. The analysis suggests that the history of neglect/marginalisation of the region by successive governments, and the political manipulation of the NA and local government, have negatively affected the performance of these institutions. The experience of the ITRCs indicates that they were unable to address the underlying causes of the tribal conflicts, such as land disputes, the manipulation of the NA and local government, rape and mass killings.

The aim of this study is to make an inquiry on the nature and the development of dualities in Bergson&rsquo
s philosophy. Since the nature of each duality differs from the others and the dualistic pattern inherent in Bergsonian philosophy is subject to change, we base our study on a chronological structure in order to comprehend better how this pattern changes. We claim that such an inquiry will yield relevant outcomes with regard to ontological and epistemological evolution of Bergson&rsquo
s thought. To state more precisely, we are of the idea that the modification in the dualistic pattern in Bergson&rsquo
s ontology is reflected in a parallel manner in his epistemology. The fundamental question that shows us the way to follow in our study is whether the elements of the dualities (whether they be ontological or epistemological) are reconciled by Bergson or they are left as absolutely distinct elements. At the end of the inquiry regarding that question, which we believe can be taken as an inspiring point in developing new approaches especially to epistemological problems, our conviction is that Bergson points out to a meeting point.

My thesis examines the possibility for decolonization in the aftermath of Canada's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and proposes settler-shame as both generative and necessary to decolonizing and disrupting the patterns of ongoing colonial violence against Indigenous bodies. I specifically focus on how sound and performance can be used to critically engage and educate on both historical and ongoing colonial violence prevalent in settler-colonial society. I elaborate on how my own performances are an embodied form of settler-shame and put forward a sound technique I’ve called time-stretched witnessing. I draw on encounters within my own practice as an electronic artist/producer as a means of addressing the degree to which it might be possible to create space for meaningful knowledge sharing, memorialization, social transformation, and decolonization. To decolonize is to work towards a reconciliation that refuses ‘reconciliation’ as we have known it thus far, one that refuses settler innocence and encourages settler-shame, and centres Indigenous leadership, the return of land and an end to gender-based violence. Streszczenie:
The ability to isolate several distinct models of reconciliation from the diverse materials left by past generations suggests that the history of this sacrament has been a continued search for a pastoral, meaningful, effective and human expression of the graced encounter between the Lord Jesus and repentant sinners celebrating the forgiveness of God and peace with the Church. This modular reconstruction also provides a basis to identify and think on certain essential theological values of reconciliation, namely, Eucharistic, ecclesial, communal, process and personal, which a community might appropriate to become a body of reconciliation in the world, instruct investigation of contemporary sacramental modes, and serve the genuine and comprehensive renewal authorized and informed by Vatican II Council. Having successfully captured these theological values, this Council proposed the sacrament of reconciliation as an indispensable part of the ongoing penitential spirit that permeates the entire Christian life. Nevertheless, the process to reform the sacrament proved a complicated and even contentious labour for those responsible. Although marked by a somewhat unimaginative similarity in their style, structure and perception of sin, the new rituals of reconciliation reflect the teaching of Vatican II Council faithfully enough to allow penitents remember and celebrate the activity of the Spirit-filled community serving as the place and presence of Jesus' saving mystery. At the same time, however, what seemed a dissonant mix of theologies ultimately bled the document of its necessary harmony so that the rituals did not attend the process of reconciliation central to the life of every faithful and reinforced the ambiguity already apparent in the regulations for general confession and absolution then in force. The Church experienced a sustained period of development and controversy about the meaning and practice of reconciliation. The blend of materials making cc. 959--963 lack the proper foundation to reflect in an authentic and credible way the awesome depth of the paschal mystery and its complex of implications for the sacrament of reconciliation. These texts will remain an unstable platform for the essential theological values of reconciliation. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
