I contend that scientific realism and realism about natural kinds should be given separate treatment because a person could be a scientific realist in general without having key realist commitments about natural kinds. I utilize Chakravartty’s three dimensions of commitment for scientific realism to create three key conditions for realism regarding natural kinds in particular. I find that Dupré’s promiscuous realism fails at least one these conditions, and therefore, for the sake of terminological consistency and clarity, we should classify promiscuous realism as an antirealist view of natural kinds.

Realism has a significant place in the history of film theory. The claim that film is essentially a realistic art form has been employed to justify the art-status of films as well as the distinctness of film as a form. André Bazin and others once used realist ontologies of film to try to establish realist teleologies and universal critical standards. I briefly sketch this history before considering the prospects for various versions of realism: Bazin’s, as well as Kendall Walton’s and Gregory Currie’s less ambitious but more plausible accounts. I argue that these theories, though they are the best cases we have for realism, are not adequate ontologies of film. However, while prior realist philosophers and critics were wrong to think that realism can provide a critical standard for all films, realism is nonetheless a praiseworthy filmic achievement - one that the opponent of ontological realism should not dismiss.

The dialectical process in the realm of aesthetics becomes an integral part of the discourse of literaryists and literary connoisseurs in the flower city. Although it is debatable whether Bandung poets purely ideological socialist, realist, or religious maybe even a combination of socialist socialist or socialist realism, did not reduce the passion of creativity of creative writers in Bandung to give birth to various forms of literary artwork needed by its citizens to build a city with a moral breath and heed the elements of nature in harmonizing modernity and local culture. Proposed on the occasion of the First Congress of the Soviet writers in Moscow in 1934, the notion of realism coming about in the theoretical debate on architecture in the early thirties of the twentieth century appears to be an ambiguous notion, straddling between idealism and ideology, innovative research and historicist formalism. The failure of socialist realism and the crisis of its emphatic and monumentalist architectural imagery, clearly shows the utopian character of the realist "dream," but also, in some ways, its imaginative power of striving to build a better world. After the Second World War the question of realism comes into discussion again. Especially in Italy realism turn into an alternative to the modern paradigm, no less utopian, but open for the emerging postmodern American ideas as well as for the architecture of the "Tendenza." The paper proposes a survey on the twentieth century realisms as an instrument of reflecting the current state of architecture: after the excesses of the postmodern populism, the disillusionment of the "Architettura Razionale" and the dialectics of reconstruction-deconstruction, a new spectre of "Realism" as a way to react to the current architectural and urban condition seems to emerge in architecture again.

Abstract Traditionally, accounts of natural kinds have run the gamut from strongly conventionalist to strongly realist views. Recently, however, there has been a significant shift toward more conventionalist-sounding positions, even (perhaps especially) among philosophers interested in scientific classification. The impetus for this is a trend toward making anthropocentric features of categories, namely, capacities to facilitate human epistemic (and other) interests via inductive inference, central to an account of kinds. I argue that taking these features seriously is both defensible and compatible with conventionalism, but not compatible with a traditional realism about kinds specifically. Moreover, hopes of achieving compatibility by revising and extending kind realism—into what I call “hyperrealism”—face an insuperable dilemma. The news for realists is not all bad, however: though kind realism proves untenable, closely associated realisms underlying the objectivity of kind discourse may be viable nonetheless.

Abstract: This essay argues that Ben Lerner’s novel 10:04 (2014) employs “implicated realism” to represent the environmentalism of the rich. Implicated realism is a self-reflexive aesthetic that reveals how the foundations of literary realism—narrative description, bourgeois settings, an emphasis on daily life—rely upon the forms of exploitation that have also produced the climate crisis. I demonstrate that implicated realism in 10:04 , paradoxically, consists of both hyperrealism and realist failure. Lerner’s novel applies hyperrealist description to seemingly innocuous scenes, uncovering their implication in the uneven distribution of environmental harm. Such hyperrealism exists alongside realist failure, which 10:04 both thematizes and performs. Through realist failure, then, implicated realism confronts the compromised history of realism and its association with possessive individualism and extractive capitalism. Consequently, although many ecocritics discount realism’s ability to represent climate change, this essay identifies implicated realism as a self-reflexive and adaptive mode.

This paper attempts to determine the commitements of the realist view of scientific theories. First, it distinguishes between ontological realism and epistemological realismo Then, it affirms that the latter is committed with the concepts of reference and truthlikeness. It rejects the so-called referential realism, and against this, it maintains that it is not possible to perform genuine acts of reference by means of false descriptions, Every act of reference needs a true description, It exemplifies this thesis with the problem of identifying elementary particles. Finally, it concludes by analysing the condítions which are necessary and sufficient for the conservation of the reference when a change of theory takes place.

Michael Dummett has proposed a means of characterising a range of traditional philosophical disputes. This method is intended to highlight the similarities which exist between these disputes and by this means to facilitate their solution. Within the characterisation each dispute is regarded as a conflict between proponents of different theories of meaning. This proposed characterisation, its validity and usefulness, form the main topic of consideration within this thesis. An exposition of the realist/anti-realist characterisation is presented which attempts to summarise the important features of Dummett's writings on this' topic. Subsequently attention is given over to a critical appraisal of this approach. The appraisal falls into two phases. The first of these is parochial in the sense that the topics discussed are internal to the framework of the characterisation. In the second phase the characterisation is viewed from further back and the relationship between it and its Wittgensteinian origins are examined. The first phase of the appraisal initially centres around issues which have arisen within the literature. One feature which emerges at this stage is that certain concepts which are central to the characterisation are in need of more precise specification. Further concerns regarding the specification are uncovered as the assessment extends beyond the published literature. In the second phase Wittgenstein's work on privacy is reviewed in some detail. It is concluded from this phase that some of the main disputes intended to be covered by the characterisation are in fact forestalled by Wittgenstein's work. Also it is suggested that the intended adoption of Wittgenstein's approach to meaning, within the characterisation, runs counter to Wittgenstein's intent. Overall it is concluded that the proposed characterisation is in need of better specification but that even if this is achieved, the approach to meaning which is being advocated is one which may not be sustainable.

This thesis is focused on conceptions of the avant-garde and realism during the Spanish Civil War in Catalonia from two main mainstays: the conception of the nationalism implicit into the conflict itself, and the mandatory unionisation artists had to follow, from the summer of the 1936. The need of alphabetizing the current civil society had was met by those two mainstays. How did them allow the artist to create from freedom? Since the widening of aesthetics in fields such as politics based on the dichotomy: committed art/ commitment of art, the position of the artist in front of realism, neo romanticism, "wided aesthetics", and the Avant-garde is analysed. In which way the political question is related with the anti-fascist Popular Front and the Spanish revolution is synchronized on the theoretical basis of realism and avant-garde?
El focus de la present tesi el posem en la concepció del realisme i de l'avantguarda durant la Guerra Civil espanyola a Catalunya des de dos grans pilars: la concepció del nacionalisme implícit en el conflicte i la sindicació obligatòria dels artistes plàstics des de l’estiu de l’any 1936, que van suposar la institucionalització de la cultura en la seva necessitat d’alfabetització de la societat civil del moment. De quina manera aquests pilars van permetre una llibertat estètica per part de l’artista? Computer-aided modelling and visualisation techniques have found widespread use in architectural practice as tools to illustrate proposed buildings and environments. The same techniques have also been utilised to aid in the interpretation of the architecture of the past, principally by recreating, in a virtual environment, structures which either no longer exist or which have been substantially altered or damaged over the years. However, much interest in this area has been focused on creating visually alluring images with a strong public appeal, with rather less emphasis given to illustrating the uncertainty that usually underlies any attempt at reconstructing the past. This thesis consists of a critical analysis of the way in which the computeraided visualisation techniques are commonly perceived and employed by researchers in architectural history and archaeology, with the 11th century church of Sant Vicenc de Cardona in Spain being used as a case study. The main issues raised are then discussed, both in terms of current trends and possible future directions, with a view to identifying a general approach to the illustration of uncertainty in virtual architectural reconstructions.

The present work is divided into three sections. The first (only in Italian) is an analysis of some of the main philosophical issues about the notions of reality and truth. The second section provides both a historical reconstruction and a theoretical discussion of the notion of truth in the philosophy of Jürgen Habermas. It shows how Habermas' approach to truth changes during the years. In the '60s (chapter one) he maintains a weak kind of realism, connected to the idea of transcendental and natural interests at the basis of an emancipatory, interpretative-practical and descriptive-technical attitude. During the '70s Habermas enhances the role of communication, thus coming to a “consensualist” theory of truth, where truth is linked to justifications obtained in discurses inspired by an ideal speech situation (chapter two). Finally, he has recently come to a realist turn, linked to a “Janus-faced” theory of truth (chapter three). The third section aims to assess whether and how this last formulation is a realist approach to truth. Such an evaluation will unveil the hiding place for the theoretical problems affecting Habermas' realist turn: the notion of objectivity.

Realism and Naturalism are two of the main literary movements in the XIX-th century European Literature. In fact, Naturalism is a form of radical Realism, which appears towards the end of Realism.The most important realis is Honore de Balzac, as Realism appeared in France at the end of the XVIII-teen century due to many political and social events, such as:The French Revolution from 1789, The Revolution between 1830-1831, the impact of Restauration, The Revolution from 1848 and the Industrial Revolution in England. The main goal of realism is to reflect reality as in a mirror. On the other hand, Naturalism is a literary movement developped from Realism as a more brutal reflection of reality, the impact of society and genetic pathologies upon human being.

Es tal la organización del cerebro, que su poder integrador es mayor en los ojos, mucho menor en el oído y aun menor en el olfato y en el gusto. Esto significa que desde el punto de vista de trasmisión de información, el ancho de banda más amplio se encuentra cuando se utiliza el sentido de la vista en cualquier proceso de comunicación humano. Bajo el nombre de realidad modificada se recogen todas aquellas técnicas que permiten ofrecer una imagen modificada de la(s) superficie(s) de un objeto, ya sea para lograr una mejor calidad o más realismo, o para obtener una composición totalmente diferente que distorsione la realidad. Para llevar a cabo dicho proceso, se utilizan las tecnologías digitales que permiten eliminar la frontera existente entre realidad e irrealidad. La amplia variedad de posibilidades que ésta ofrece, ha facilitado el establecimiento de un estatus de realidad, denominada “Mediated Reality” que en este artículo se denominará “Realidad Modificada”. Este tipo de realidad favorece la experimentación, pudiendo adoptar, potenciar o desestimar aspectos puestos en práctica en estos entornos, en la propia cotidianidad. Se trataría pues de un espacio de interrelación entre los espacios cotidianos reales y esa realidad modificada, en que las propias experiencias en estos entornos producen una mutua influencia, generando una ruptura de las fronteras entre ambos. En este artículo se describirá dicha realidad, se mostrarán los elementos principales de diseño que se deben tener en cuenta a la hora de ofrecer imágenes de elevada calidad, los condicionantes de este tipo de tecnologías, y se mostrarán aplicaciones reales de esta tecnología. Regarding the organization of the brain, the integrative power is greater in the eyes, much less in the ear and even less on smell and taste. It means that from the perspective of information transmission, the bandwidth is larger when the sense of sight is the way in witch any human communication process happen. The name Mediated Realims refers to those techniques that offer a modified image of an object, either for better quality or realism, or to get a totally different composition distorting reality. In order to carry out this process, we use digital technologies that eliminate the border between reality and unreality. This Mediated Realism offers the possibility of doing experimentation in the daily life. It produces a new space of interaction between reality and the spaces produced by Mediated Realism, generating a breakdown of the boundaries between both of them. In this paper we describe this reality, we will show the main elements of design that must be taken into account in order to produce high quality images and the constraints of this type of technology, and finally we will show real applications of this technology.

Some have recently concluded national sanitation campaigns; a number of countries have campaigns underway; while others are in the conceptualising and planning process. Monitoring and reporting results is one of the key challenges associated with these campaigns. This Frontiers of Sanitation presents lessons learnt to date to inform ongoing and future government campaigns intended to end open defecation and improve access to safely managed sanitation. Firstly, we discuss campaigns, targets, monitoring, reporting, and verification arrangements, showing how these processes can be used to increase the credibility of national declarations and strengthen campaigns to respond to challenges. Secondly, we present case studies from India and Nepal, providing campaign-specific details from two recently declared ODF countries.
