Purpose Changing the product characteristics and demand quantity resulting from the variability of the modern market leads to re-assigned tasks and changing the cycle time on the production line. Therefore, companies need re-balancing of their assembly line instead of balancing. The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient algorithm approach for U-type assembly line re-balancing problem using stochastic task times. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, a genetic algorithm is proposed to solve approach for U-type assembly line re-balancing problem using stochastic task times. Findings The performance of the genetic algorithm is tested on a wide variety of data sets from literature. The task times are assumed normal distribution. The objective is to minimize total re-balancing cost, which consists of workstation cost, operating cost and task transposition cost. The test results show that proposed genetic algorithm approach for U-type assembly line re-balancing problem performs well in terms of minimizing total re-balancing cost. Practical implications Demand variation is considered for stochastic U-type re balancing problem. Demand change also affects cycle time of the line. Hence, the stochastic U-type re-balancing problem under four different cycle times are analyzed to present practical case. Originality/value As per the authors’ knowledge, it is the first time that genetic algorithm is applied to stochastic U-type re balancing problem. The large size data set is generated to analyze performance of genetic algorithm. The results of proposed algorithm are compared with ant colony optimization algorithm.

For the fixed-position assembly workshop, the integrated optimization problem of production planning and scheduling in the uncertain re-entrance environment is studied. Based on the situation of aircraft assembly workshops, the characteristics of fixed-position assembly workshop with uncertain re-entrance are abstracted. As the re-entrance repetition obeys some type of probability distribution, the expected value is used to describe the repetition, and a bi-level stochastic expected value programming model of integrated production planning and scheduling is constructed. Recursive expressions for start time and completion time of assembly classes and teams are confirmed. And the relation between the decision variable in the lower-level model of scheduling and the overtime and earliness of assembly classes and teams in the upper-level model of production planning is identified. Addressing the characteristics of bi-level programming model, an alternate iteration method based on Improved Genetic Algorithm (AI-IGA) is proposed to solve the models. Elite Genetic Algorithm (EGA) is introduced for the upper-level model of production planning, and Genetic Simulated Annealing Algorithm based on Stochastic Simulation Technique (SS-GSAA) is developed for the lower-level model of scheduling. Results from our experiments demonstrate that the proposed method is feasible for production planning and optimization of the fixed-position assembly workshop with uncertain re-entrance. And algorithm comparison verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

It is difficult to exchange parametric assembly models using conventional neutral formats such as the standard for the exchange of product model data or the initial graphics exchange specification. These formats only support the boundary representation information that leads to the inability to perform parametric re-evaluation, once a model is exchanged. In order to exchange parametric information along with the design intent, a design history-based macro-parametric approach was proposed. Our method is macro-parametrics approach, however, supported only the exchange of individual part models. As most of the products are manufactured in assemblies, where several components are connected with multiple constraints, it is necessary to exchange the assembly model data. To overcome the issue of post-exchange editability, a collection of neutral assembly commands was introduced to extend the capabilities of the macro-parametric approach. A set of neutral assembly constraints was defined and a system for exchanging the parametric assembly models was implemented. An assembly model consisting of coaxial and incidence constraints was successfully exchanged between two commercial computer-aided design systems: CATIA and NX. It was possible to re-evaluate the assembly model parametrically after the exchange. The method can be further extended to exchange the remaining constraint types in different commercial computer-aided design systems.

The results of investigations on the analysis of the design and choice of assembly-welding devices for the manufacture of small-sized machines for the building materials and various purposes production structures are presented. Simultaneously, the ever-increasing requirements to reduce the time needed for the development of new equipment and improve their quality with minimal labour and material costs led to sufficient progress in the development of the design of technological assembly equipment during assembly and welding.As the analysis and practice have showen in multi-unit production conditions with discrete-unstable production programs for the technical equipment of welding and assembly operations, it is advisable to use universal reusable assembly and welding re-adjustable fixtures instead of one-piece welding device. These devices consist of a set of structurally standardized elements from which various special devices for assembling a variety of welded structures are created by appropriate reusable composing or re-arranging.The possibility of such linking and re-arranging of the elements of UAD is provided by the high interchangeability and universality of their design. Moreover, the norms and accuracy established by the standards and the relative position of the surfaces of the UAD elements ensure their assembly without tightness and further adjustment.Assembly and welding devices UAD have significant advantages in accuracy and reliability of manufacture of welding and assembly products of various dimensions and configurations.It is advisable for the production of machines for the manufacture of building materials and structures to use universal collapsible re-adjustable devices.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address and solve operational problems of an automotive industry in reaching production target by adopting Maynard Operation Sequence Technique (MOST) as lean and productivity improvement strategies. Design/methodology/approach In the undertaken case of auto-car rear window assembly line, a recurring production shortfall in fulfilling the daily demand is seemingly due to inappropriate work method. Initial observation of the operations led to suspect certain lapses in initiatives to adopt the time standards, to reduce or eliminate non-value added motions, to design suitable aisle and to assign tasks among workstations in a balanced manner. Subsequently an attempt is made to pinpoint the causes of poor performance and the bottlenecks through process flow analysis and time study by applying MOST. The elemental tasks are closely examined for possible reduction of workstation times by choosing efficient work methods with ergonomic features. Thus appropriate hand tools, jigs and fixture with nominal investment are prescribed to incorporate in the assembly works. The operational changes as steered by the MOST application have enhanced the workflow with a shorter cycle time which led to a substantial increase in productivity. Findings The productivity of the assembly line is increased by more than 29 percent from the earlier capacity through the MOST application which is deemed to meet the current level of demand. Originality/value The adopted framework for recognizing the effectiveness of MOST to expose and rectify the flaws in work methods without much investment is expected to be beneficial for a manufacturer in securing the competitiveness.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) of a typical interphase 3T3 fibroblast consists of a compact perinuclear arrangement of cisternae and lamellae which can be observed by immunofluorescence with anti-endoplasmin. During mitosis the reticulum dissociates into small fragments from which it appears to re-assemble in the daughter cells. When interphase 3T3 cells are exposed to calcium ionophores, but not other ionophores, there is a similar dissociation of the ER into small uniform fragments, which are dispersed throughout the cytoplasm. Electron microscopy shows that the fragments consist of small vesicular structures and that essentially all of the rough ER except the nuclear envelope is dissociated. The dissociation of the ER by calcium ionophore is a relatively specific process since other organelles and supramolecular assemblies remain unaffected. When cells with dissociated ER are returned to normal medium, there is a rapid reassembly of the fragments into the continuous reticulum. In a proportion of the cells it is possible to observe linear arrays of the fragments, which probably represent intermediates in the re-assembly process. These observations demonstrate that the ER in interphase 3T3 cells can be dissociated into, and re-assembled from, small fragments. Re-assembly of the ER from the fragments is dependent on the presence of millimolar levels of calcium in the external medium. In the presence of calcium, re-assembly is inhibited by the calcium channel blocker, verapamil. Thus calcium ions appear to play an important role in ER structure and assembly.

This paper is to investigate the characteristics of re-use precision locknuts of the machine tools spindles in the vertical assembly under different effective diameters, locking axial forces and clasp screw locking torques in the static tests for the axial force change rates. The results with the new flank locking precision locknuts are compared to the re-use nuts with different values; we obtain the decline of axial force change rates from predetermined equations using regress analysis to conduct experimental forecasts. In the experimental results, plastic deformation has occurred in re-use nuts structure in the vertical spindle assembly. The decline of the axial force will be increased along with the nut size; and those of the re-use nuts decline more than the new nuts. Therefore, repetitive uses of the reuse nuts are not recommended.

This paper presents an autonomous robotic assembly system for Soma cube blocks, which, after observing the individual blocks and their assembled shape, quickly plans and executes the assembly motion sequence that picks up each block and incrementally build the target shape. A multi stage planner is used to find the suitable assembly solutions, assembly sequences and grip sequences considering various constraints, and re-grasping is used when the block target pose is not directly realizable or the block pose is ambiguous. The suggested system is implemented for a commercial UR5e robotic arm and a novel two degrees of freedom (DOF) gripper capable of in-hand manipulation, which further speeds up the manipulation speed. It was experimentally validated through a public competitive demonstration, where the suggested system completed all assembly tasks reliably with outstanding performance.

Evaluating the product functions and associating them with the manufacturing technique is crucial to reducing the manufacturing cost. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) is a concurrent engineering technique that plays a vital role in redesigning of existing product or service by reducing its manufacturing and assembly cost and time, have the desired level of quality and reliability. In this research work is apply DFMA on existing hair clipper and decrease the net manufacturing cost of the hair clipper. Hair clipper is very popular for at-home use and is seen as an essential tool in hair grooming. The analysis of design for manufacturing and assembly is done using guideline of Boothroyd Dewhurst DFMA. The components of the Hair clipper were undergone alteration by using DFMA and redesigned approaches. In the same platform, the actual model had the redesign. The assembly time for redesign exhibited an enhancement of 49.25% where the assembly time was decreased from 322.91s to 163.81s and design efficiency was improved 7.219% from 7.432% to 14.651%. Hence, the best design of hair clipper was made which is having optimal value is achieved.

The scope of the AI system, known originally as the Direct Labor Management System and now as the Global Study Process Allocation System (GSPAS), has increased over the years to include additional functionality on Ergonomics and Powertrain Assembly (Engines and Transmission plants). The knowledge about Ford’s manufacturing processes is contained in an ontology originally developed using the KL-ONE representation language and methodology. To preserve the viability of the GSPAS ontology and to make it easily usable for other applications within Ford, we needed to re-engineer and convert the KL-ONE ontology into a semantic web OWL/RDF format. In this article, we will discuss the process by which we re-engineered the existing GSPAS KL-ONE ontology and deployed semantic web technology in our application.

Geometry constraint and physical constraint change because the structure is complex, tonnage is large, and assembly load is complex on heavy duty machine tool, assembly relation is changed for repeated assembly, then, the assembly accuracy reproducibility and assembly accuracy retentivity decline, which results in the decrease of assembly reliability. According to this problem, the interaction of geometry constraint and physical constraint is discussed in this paper, the influence factors of assembly accuracy reproducibility and assembly accuracy retentivity are respectively analyzed, the establishing, demolition and re-establishing of assembly relation effects assembly accuracy reproducibility, and evolution of assembly relation with time effects assembly accuracy retentivity, which are respectively revealed. Using margin method to evaluate assembly accuracy reliability, the criterion and evaluation method of assembly accuracy reliability is proposed, in order to provide reliable and quantitative criterion for assembly process design, and reasonably set safety margin of geometry constraint and physical constraint, form reliable assembly process, realize that the assembly accuracy is controlled and improved by assembly.

Based on the performance analysis technique developed in Part I, this paper presents improvability indicators for assembly lines with unreliable machines. In particular, it shows that assembly lines are unimprovable with respect to workforce re-distribution if each buffer is, on the average, close to being half full. These lines are unimprovable with respect to buffer capacity re-distribution if each machine is starved and blocked with almost equal frequency. In addition, the paper provides indicators for identification of bottleneck machines and bottleneck buffers. Finally, the paper reports on an application of these improvability indicators in a case study at an automotive components plant.

Assembly process has a complicated influence on dynamic characteristics and the product performance. However, the information model of the non-geometric process parameters isn’t considered by the existing assembly modeling methods. Based on the further developing of the traditional hierarchical structure, the assembly process layer hierarchical structure was obtained. By acquiring the assembly feature constraints hierarchy tree in Pro/E, and re-modeling the hierarchy tree information, a model of the assembly process hierarchy tree was proposed, and its information model was established. The software instance showed the application of the assembly modeling method. Computer aided alignment showed the proposed approach superior in the assembly process planning, managing and tracking. By the key assembly parameters information modeling, data for subsequent product alignment analysis was supported.

In this paper, we present the re-engineering process of an assembly line that features speed reducers and multipliers for agricultural applications. The “as-is” line was highly inefficient due to several issues, including the age of the machines, a non-optimal arrangement of the shop floor, and the absence of process standards. The assembly line issues were analysed with Lean Manufacturing tools, identifying irregularities and operations that require effort (Mura), overload (Muri), and waste (Muda). The definition of the “to-be” line included actions to update the department layout, modify the assembly process, and design the line feeding system in compliance with the concepts of Golden Zone (i.e., the horizontal space more ergonomically and easily accessible by the operator) and Strike Zone (i.e., the vertical workspace setup in accordance to ergonomics specifications). The re-engineering process identified a critical problem in the incorrect assembly of the oil seals, mainly caused by the difficulty in visually identifying the correct side of the component, due to different reasons. Convolutional neural networks were used to address this issue. The proposed solution resulted to be a Poka Yoke. The whole re-engineering process induced a productivity increase that is estimated from 46% to 80%. The study demonstrates how Lean Manufacturing tools together with deep learning technologies can be effective in the development of smart manufacturing lines.
