Pełny tekst źródłaMeasuring the roughness of a surface use to produce results which depend on the employed methodology. Scanning Electronic Microscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, profilometry, are some of the techniques used to characterize surface roughness. This work explores and develops the use of Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry to measure and quantify the roughness of a surface. Four different samples with controlled and periodic surface profiles (two rectangular waved, and two sinusoidal), with enough aspect ratio to, give measurable effects in an RBS analysis, were produced by optical interferometry to test and verify the proposed methodology. The experimental RBS spectra were converted into rms roughness and compared to SEM and AFM measurements. Measuring roughness by RBS enables one to inspect a much bigger area (of the order of some mm2) and with more depth resolution, than by using an AFM, yet still limited by the experimental intrinsic energy resolution of the RBS methodology.

Na última década, o sistema de tratamento de esgotos domésticos por lodos ativados perdeu espaço entre outros processos devido à necessidade de utilização de grandes quantidades de energia. Entretanto, os altos índices de eficiência de remoção de nutrientes o levam a ser o tratamento mais indicado para atender as mais severas exigências da legislação ambiental. Com o objetivo de otimização deste processo, procurando implementar a nitrificação-desnitrificação simultânea (NDS), foram realizados estudos sobre a operação de um reator em bateladas seqüenciais em escala real. Para isto foram executada duas etapas, em condições diferentes de concentração de OD, sendo monitorados seus parâmetros básicos de operação, a fim de verificar a eficiência de remoção de carga orgânica e de nutrientes, e também a velocidade de consumo de oxigênio por meio de respirometria. Na Etapa I, onde foi mantida a concentração de OD abaixo de 0,6 mg/L, a relação A/M, em média, manteve-se em 0,04 kg/kg.d e a carga aplicada média foi de 0,10 kgDQO/m³.d. Nesta etapa, obteve-se as melhores condições operacionais com pH acima de 7,0 e boa sedimentabilidade do lodo. A eficiência de desnitrificação foi satisfatória variando entre 37% e 79%. A remoção de carga orgânica manteve-se entre 86% e 94% e de amônia-N entre 80% e 92% (exceto para um ponto discrepante de 22%). Na Etapa II, onde foi mantida a concentração de OD acima de 0,6 mg/L, a relação A/M em média manteve-se em 0,07 kg/kg.d e a carga aplicada média foi de 0,20 kgDQO/m³.d. Nesta etapa, obteve-se oxidação de amônia-N com eficiências entre 95% e 100%, porém com quantidades de nitrato-N no efluente do RBS variando entre 17 e 41 mg/L. A eficiência de desnitrificação caiu em relação à Etapa I, ficando abaixo de 27%. Houveram problemas como consumo elevado de alcalinidade, levando a baixos valores de pH, prejudicando a decantabilidade do lodo. Da Etapa I para a Etapa II, a velocidade de consumo de oxigênio reduziu-se em torno de 50%, o consumo de alcalinizante dobrou e o consumo de energia aumentou, em média, 6.000 kWh por mês de operação. O controle operacional, com objetivo de atingir a simultaneidade das reações de nitrificação e desnitrificação, se mostrou uma alternativa eficiente na redução dos custos operacionais do reator RBS operado em escala real para tratamento de esgotos domésticos.
In the last decade, the system of wastewater treatment by actived sludge enabled lost space between other processes because of the need of using large quantities of energy. Meanwhile, the high rate of efficiency of removal of nutrients has led it to be the most appropriate treatment to meet the more stringent requirements of environmental legislation. In order to optimize this process, trying to implement simultaneous nitrification-denitrification (SND), studies were performed on the operation of a reactor in scale sequencing batch mode. To this were implemented two steps, in terms of concentration of different OD, and monitored their basic parameters of operation in order to check the efficiency of removal of organic load and nutrients, and also the rate of oxygen consumption through respirometry. In Stage I, where was kept the DO concentration below 0.6 mg/L, the F/M average has remained at 0.04 kg/kg.d and the applied load average was 0.10 kgDQO / m³.d. At this stage, was obtained from the best operating conditions with a pH above 7.0 and good sediments of sludge. The efficiency of denitrification was satisfactory ranging between 37% and 79%. The removal of organic load has remained between 86% and 94% and ammonium-N between 80% and 92% (except for one point discrepant 22%). In Stage II, where he was kept the DO concentration over 0.6 mg / L, the F/M average has remained at 0.07 kg / kg.d and the applied load average was 0.20 kgDQO/m³.d. At this stage, was achieved oxidation of ammonia-N with efficiencies between 95% and 100%, but with quantities of nitrate-N in the effluent of RBS ranging between 17 and 41 mg / L. The efficiency of denitrification reduced on the Stage I, being between 0% and 27%. There have been problems such as high consumption of alkalinity, leading to low levels of pH, damaging the sludge settling. From Stage I to Stage II, the oxygen uptake rate reduced around 50%, the consumption of lime doubled and energy consumption has increased by an average of 6,000 kWh per month of operation. The operational control in order to achieve the simultaneity of reactions of nitrification and denitrification, was an efficient alternative in reducing the operational costs of SBR for treatment of domestic sewage.

One of the primary scientific challenges still facing the development of commercial nuclear fusion reactors lies at the plasma-material boundary. Plasma temperatures greater than 10 million degrees Celsius (10 keV) require clever magnetic field configurations to confine the plasma near the center of the toroid. However, the materials directly surrounding the plasma, known as the first wall, will be in contact with a cooler plasma, closer to 5 eV, and must be able to withstand intense neutron radiation as well as high heat fluxes. It is still unclear how some proposed first wall materials such as tungsten and molybdenum will behave in environments with these plasmas. Scientists must provide evidence supporting the lifetime, fuel retention capabilities, and neutron resilience of these materials in order to assure their high quality performance inside fusion reactors for many years. As a result, scientists must better understand how plasmas interact with surfaces of materials. This project contributes to this endeavor by studying plasma erosion in real-time using a helicon plasma source and an ion beam analysis technique known as Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy (RBS) to determine target thickness and composition. Copper coated aluminum targets were subjected to helium plasmas of varying fluxes and ion energies and were analyzed in real-time with RBS to determine the copper layer thickness as a function of time. This analysis will provide the frame work for studying fusion materials such as molybdenum and tungsten in the same way using hydrogenic plasmas. It is expected that the erosion rate will be proportional to the ion flux (a function of plasma density) and the sputtering yield (a function of ion energy), while being inversely proportional to the target density. The goal will be to develop a reliable method to characterize plasma regimes with reproduceable, well-behaved flux profiles and use them to controllably erode samples, while performing real-time RBS analysis of the surface layer.

Pełny tekst źródłaNanostructured materials have properties that make these materials different from their counterpart in higher scale that opens many novel possibilities and technical applications. One of the main issues in nanotechnology is to develop suitable methods for the analysis and characterization of nanostructures. This works studies the use of Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry for the analysis of micro and nano copper structures, grown in polycarbonate Nuclepore® membrane templates. The test structures were made by filling the pores of the membranes with copper by electrodeposition grown on top of a thin, 5nm to 500nm gold film, deposited on one side of the membrane by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) reinforced by a 10um thick copper substrate deposited on top of the gold film. Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) were used to characterize the samples. Analyzing the samples with micro and nano cylinders, the change of the RBS spectra as a function of the sample tilt angle, was studied using the approach of Metzner et al (1997) generalized to 3D structures by numerical simulations. Cylinder diameters varied from 50nm to 400nm, while their length varied from 1 to 5um. SEM analysis gives local morphological profile and an estimate for geometrical dimensions. RBS analysis provides large areal information about average geometric parameters of the analyzed structures.
