Streszczenie:
The current study was undertaken to estimate the morphometric pattern of three commensal rodents, i.e., Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, and Rattus rattus in Qatar. One hundred forty-eight rodents were captured from different facilities throughout Qatar. The captured rodents were used to identify the external body and cranio-mandibular morphometry. The study found that R. norvregicus was the most prevalent (n = 120, 81%, 95% CI: 73.83–87.05). Most of the rodents were collected from Al Rayan municipality (n = 92, 62%), were adults (n = 138, 93.2%, 95% CI: 87.92–96.71), and were from livestock farms (n = 79, 49%, 95% CI: 41.02–57.65). The rodents’ average body weights were 18.8 ± 2.2 gm, 264.3 ± 87.5 gm, and 130 ± 71.3 gm for M. musculus, R. norvegicus, and R. rattus, respectively. The research found that the studied rodents are smaller than those of other countries such as Turkey, Tunisia, and Iran. The study of morphometry is a useful tool for the traditional identification of small mammal species, including rodents. The average morphometric measurements of the external body and skull were normally distributed and can be used as a reference of R. norvegicus and R. rattus for Qatar. A further comprehensive study is required to investigate the rodent population index, eco-friendly control program, and public health importance in Qatar.

Streszczenie:
A handful of rat species are among the most pervasive mammal species across the globe, primarily because of their close relationship with humans. The processes involved in this relationship, commensalism, are described in detail. Two rat species, Rattus rattus and Rattus exulans, are the focus of this thesis and their biology and taxonomy are described and discussed. Their modern distributions are the direct result of some of the earliest and most extensive human migration events in human history. The archaeology of the Pacific and Indian Oceans is described and migration vectors and spheres of interaction are identified. These possible patterns of human migration and exchange networks provide testable hypotheses that can be investigated using the subject rat species as proxies for long distance human movement. Modern and archaeological tooth samples of R. exulans and modern samples of R. rattus are analysed using geometric morphometrics. The results reveal important aspects of human migration and differences between these species' biology. R. exulans was likely to have been transported out of Island Southeast Asia at a very early date. Human colonisation of the Pacific occurred in a series of complex pulses and pauses that are clearly reflected in the R. exulans data. For the first time it is possible to demonstrate, within one dataset, the multiple origins and directions of colonisation across the Pacific. The R. rattus data provides a striking comparison, showing very different results that allude to a different level of modern gene-‐ flow and therefore a difference in behaviour and biology. The results provide a framework for comparison with future archaeological material. The results presented and hypotheses raised have immediate application to existing archaeological material and areas of interest. Further commensal species should be examined following similar lines of questioning as applied here.

The distribution of the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the Pacific rat (Rattus exulans) are the direct result of human migration. Their wide distributions across can give us key insights into human movements across the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Using geometric morphometric approaches to trace the distributions of different phenotypes we were able to analyse both modern and archaeological specimens. The results from R. Exulans were very clear, demonstrating the complexity of movement into the Pacific and reflecting the pulse pause nature of this colonisation, as observed from other lines of evidence. The results of R. Rattus are less clear, and is likely the result of extensive and continuous introgression. The results are interpreted in light of the different behavioural traits of each species, and thereby highlighting the role of behaviour in gene-flow across a species distribution

This study aimed to: (1) Establish if rodent populations in sewers are separate from surface ones (Sewer Interceptor study) (2) Investigate the numbers and distribution of rats in sewers (Preferred Location study/Long term study/Hot spot study) (3) Identify Rat behaviours that might affect numbers and control measures (Bait trial / Preferred Location study). To achieve these aims sewer rat populations were monitored in the London sewer systems over a 20-year period. More detailed studies on rat behaviour were carried out in sequestered sewer systems. The Interceptor study showed that rats are not confined in the system by water traps and cannot be viewed as a separate population from surface rats. They can, especially during periods of low flow, swim underwater, upstream, in the dark, to access or exit the system. The Preferred Location study showed that rats like to find and use dry locations within the sewer network. There are distinct sets of behaviours, which occur in dry locations and not in wet ones and vice versa. The Bait trial confirmed other studies showing that sewer rats are neophobic and this factor needs to be taken into account when dealing with them. The more rats there were, the shorter the avoidance period. In the experiment here, the mean time until consumption decreased from 8.5 for one rat to 5.5 days for three rats. The Long Term study found that the trend in rat numbers has been in decline over the whole twenty-year period of the study in the location studied. In the first thirteen years of the study, the proportion of bait takes decreased significantly from approximately 0.17 in 1986/87 to 0.03 in 1998/99 (F=17.75, P < 0.001: df 1,11). Since then, the decline has continued with an exponential curve best fitting the data. The Hot Spot study showed that Rats are not evenly distributed throughout the sewer network but occur, year on year in "Hotspots". These were locations, which showed up to 17 times more than the statistically significant level of rodent activity. This activity occurred in the same location year after year although not throughout the entire study period. These locations were statistically significant (p < 0.0001 after using the Bonferroni correction).

Streszczenie:
This study examined the urine and faecal scent marking behaviour and investigatory responses of wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus Berkenhout) kept in large, semi-natural enclosures to assess the role these scents play in their communication system. For the first time, this study has shown that Norway rats deposit faecal scent marks in response to odour cues and form latrines. The spatial distribution of faeces was highly uneven. Most faeces deposited in open areas were found in clusters occupying less than 1 m2 which were termed latrines. Rats spent more time at feeders and in other areas which were almost devoid of faeces than at these latrines. This suggests that latrines were created deliberately, perhaps for communication. Rats discriminated among faeces from different donors with respect to their investigation, presumably using olfactory cues. They faecal marked in response to urine cues from rats belonging to other colonies, although they did not faecal mark in response to their own urine cues or to a novel non-social stimulus (clean tiles). Investigation and faecal marking was aimed mainly towards urine from individuals of the marker's own sex. This suggests that faecal marking may play a role in communication between competitors. Urine was deposited as discrete marks around the enclosures, in an uneven distribution. The highest density of marks was found by the enclosure walls and nest areas. Rats showed a greater urine marking response towards introduced clean surfaces than towards surfaces they had already marked, ensuring that their home area was always covered with their urine marks. Close monitoring of urine marking on clean surfaces showed that male -rats had a marking rate three times greater than that of females. This could not be attributed solely to weight differences between males and females. Rats also urine marked in response to urine deposited by rats from other colonies. Urine from unfamiliar rats of the subject's own sex stimulated more investigation than urine from the opposite sex, though donors were immature. These results suggest that urine marking also plays a role in communication between competitors. Testing individuals in their home enclosure, using scent marks deposited naturally by rats, and the contexts in which scent stimuli are deposited by donors (e. g. as part of their home range) and found by residents (e. g. finding intruder's home range marks in the resident's home range) were essential factors in determining their response to olfactory cues. The importance of these factors is discussed.

Attempting to minimize possible side effects caused by glicocorticosteroids, immunotherapy has been studied and applied through immune system stimulation. Among alternatives the Sacharomyces cerevisiae has been widely studied regarding its immunomodulatory effects, as well as the use of β-glucane because of its ability to activate defense mechanisms in the host, stimulating the hematopoietic system. Therefore the reason of this test is to evaluate the β –glucane and Sacharomyces cervisiae immunomodulatory capacity through hematologic parameters, toxicity evaluation by biochemical analysis and electrophoretic profile evaluation in Ratus (Wistar bloodline) immunosuppressed after experimental administration of Dexametasona. It has been possible to verify the leucocite growing and high phase protein stimulation in the groups treated with supplementation, beneficially, after inducing clinical condition of leukopenia

Streszczenie:
There are random uses of androgenic anabolic steroids such as sustanon , especially among young people and adolescent. These drugs have many long-term negative side effects; therefore they have become one of major problem of health. This study was conducted in order to examine the effect of intramuscular injection of androgenic anabolic steroide (sustanon) on some hormonal, immunological and histological parameters in female albino rats. The study carried out in the animal house (College of Veterinary Medicine/ University of Al-Qassim green). Twenty Four female rats were divided into four groups (6 replication for each), the first, second and third treatment sub groups injected by sustanon at concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.2) mg/kg/day respectively for six weeks, while the fourth subgroup was considered a control set which injected by physiological normal saline (0.9%Nacl). The blood parameters estimation (RBCs, WBCs, PCV, PLT,Hb) Histologic study included studying histopathological changes in skeletal muscles tissue (thigh, arm). The results showed a significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) of the levels (Hb,RBCs, WBCs, PCV, PLT), compared with thecontrol group. Histology study changes showed that hypetrophy of fiber muscle in thigh and arm tissue with hyperplasia of muscle cells in arm at high doses present study conclude that increasing the concentrations of sustanon drug may cause clear pathological changes (physiologically, and histologically in most of the study parameters.
