We study the orthogonal rational functions with a given sequence of poles on the half plane. We give the weak-star convergence results for the rational measures which relate to the Poisson kernel and reproducing kernel. Those rational measures represent the same inner product as the normalized Nevanlinna measure in [Formula: see text]. Moreover, we consider the convergence properties of the interpolants which interpolate the Carathéodory function [Formula: see text].

Les progrès constants en miniaturisation des transistors et l'augmentation des fréquences des signaux utilisés sont les principales tendances dans l'évolution des circuits électroniques. Avec ces évolutions apparaissent de nombreux effets indésirables qui perturbent le comportement des systèmes électroniques et sont soupçonnés d'être responsables de la majorité des dégradations de signaux dans les systèmes en haute fréquence. Des retards de propagation indésirables sont ainsi introduits par la présence des interconnexions, et la diaphonie, phénomène dû aux couplages entre lignes d'interconnexions, peut éventuellement provoquer des commutations non désirées des transistors. La prise en compte des interconnexions, dès les premières phases de conception d'un système, est par conséquent devenue une nécessité ces dernières années. Mais la simulation temporelle d'un réseau d'interconnexions est très gourmande en temps de calcul, ce qui impacte la durée globale de conception. Le remplacement des modèles électriques, décrivant précisément les interconnexions, par des modèles plus simples est primordial pour limiter les coûts de calcul. Une méthode de réduction d'ordre des modèles peut alors être employée pour effectuer cette opération efficacement. Le modèle final doit en effet décrire assez précisément certains aspects importants du modèle original et conserver les propriétés importantes du réseau d'interconnexions. Cette démarche permettra aux concepteurs d'effectuer des simulations temporelles rapides et d'étudier les paramètres d'intégrité du signal tel que le retard, le temps de montée, le dépassement....L'objectif de cette thèse est d'établir un nouvel outil de réduction de complexité des modèles de réseaux d'interconnexions. Différentes descriptions initiales des systèmes d'interconnexions sont envisagées : modèles circuits (fonctions de transfert) ou mesures fréquentielles. L'approche développée repose sur l'utilisation des fonctions orthogonales de Müntz-Laguerre et de Kautz afin de décrire mathématiquement, de manière précise, le système d'origine. Un opérateur linéaire, lié à ces fonctions de base, est ensuite appliqué pour déterminer un modèle rationnel de moindre complexité. La technique proposée est comparée à d'autres méthodes de la littérature d'abord sur des exemples académiques. Tout le potentiel de la méthode est ensuite illustré par sa mise en œuvre sur des réseaux d'interconnexions.

This thesis explores the interplay between complex geometry and operator theory, focusing on characterizing certain objects from algebraic geometry. Two concepts that have been of prime importance in recent times in the analysis of Hilbert space operators are distinguished varieties, which are a priori geometric in nature, and joint spectra, which are a priori algebraic in nature. This thesis brings them together to characterize all distinguished varieties with respect to the bidisc, more generally the polydisc and the symmetrized bidisc in terms of the joint spectrum of certain linear pencils. Some of the results are shown to refine earlier work in these directions. The binding force is provided by an operator-theoretic result, the Berger-Coburn-Lebow characterization of a tuple of commuting isometries. The thesis then turns to studying the uniqueness of solutions of the solvable NevanlinnaPick interpolation problems on the symmetrized bidisc and its connection with distinguished varieties. Several sucient conditions have been identified for a given data to have a unique solution. Moreover, for a class of solvable data on the symmetrized bidisc, there exists a distinguished variety where all solutions agree. Additionally, the thesis explores the more general concept of the determining sets.

This chapter first explains what intuitive theories are, how they can be modeled as probabilistic, generative programs, and how intuitive theories support various cognitive functions such as prediction, counterfactual reasoning, and explanation. It focuses on two domains of knowledge: people’s intuitive understanding of physics, and their intuitive understanding of psychology. It shows how causal judgments can be modeled as counterfactual contrasts operating over an intuitive theory of physics, and how explanations of an agent’s behavior are grounded in a rational planning model that is inverted to infer the agent’s beliefs, desires, and abilities. It concludes by highlighting some of the challenges that the intuitive theories framework faces, such as understanding how intuitive theories are learned and developed.

This chapter explores the nature of the self through an examination of self-representations. Self-representations are very special kinds of representations distinguished from other representations not by what they represent (i.e. selves) but by how they represent it and by the functional roles they play in our mental lives. The chapter argues that self-representations play three distinct but related roles in our cognitive lives. First, they subserve the synchronic integration of current mental states into a (rationally) interconnected whole. Second, they subserve the diachronic integration of past, present, and future states into one enduring and ever unfolding self-consciousness. And, finally, they help define the boundaries of the self by serving to distinguish selves from one another. The central claim is that being a self is nothing but being a creature that deploys such representations in inner thought with reference to itself.

Foucault attempted to introduce an approach which essentially rejected the nature of rationality, modernity and dialectics. Foucault argued that if epistemology wishes to get rid of normative theory, which functions as a scientific straightjacket for free thought and uncoerced arguments, it has to discard dialectics. However, the idea explored in this chapter is that by the use of such a course of reflection, science abandons its claims for rational praxis as well. The normativity of theory provides praxis with inner constitution and external accountability criteria because normativity is not a hypothetical construction but is formed according to the social function of dialectics. Science needs dialectics in order to be accountable to society. Structures, experience and systems seem inadequate for science to render itself socially accountable. Therefore, social praxis appears as a partial scientific and social concern where the critique that theory articulates through dialectics is missing, rendering science un-critical and, thus, pre-modern. Foucault’s opposition to modernity’s theorizing on the part of his theoretical contemporaries, such as Habermas, lies in two fundamental points: a) his concept of reason; and b) his understanding of critique.

The Chapter provides a concluding conceptual overview on theoretical perspectives of the practical interpretation of binary predicative units within an invariant approach to SLA. An important advantage of the invariant-based textbook theory is that binary predicative units function within the entire discourse ranging from the simplest to the most complicated structures. Binary predicative units initiate and congregate the speech modes, successively activating egocentric, inner, and oral speech, thus developing grounds for writing. Another advantage of the invariant textbook theory and corresponding technology is the highest degree of the learner's involvement in second language acquisition. The acquirer's communicative competence is characterized not only by their ability to produce or perceive authentic utterances but also by the ability to express their attitudes and frame the interlocutor's in any form of communication.

This paper handles numerical analyses that give attention to the relation between the thermal performance of concentric tube heat exchangers and its operational parameters. For this purpose, an iterative computational code is developed to compute thermal performance. The computations are based on supplying the code with the exchanger length, inner/outer diameters, inner/outer fluids, inner/outer flow rates and inner/outer inlet temperatures. A parametric analysis that examines the relation between the thermal performance of heat exchanger and inner/outer flow rates is presented. It is originated that the thermal performance and the overall heat transfer coefficient of a concentric tube heat exchanger increase through a rational function with the inner and outer flow rates.

The present paper demonstrates the time-domain implementation of arbitrary-order non-reflecting boundary conditions for a 3d non-linear time-accurate RANS solver for turbomachinery applications. The conditions are based on the 2d circumferential mode decomposition of the linearized Euler equations. The exact linearized conditions are non-local since they involve space-time Fourier/Laplace transforms. Time-local conditions of arbitrary order are obtained by approximation of the inverse Laplace transform Bessel function convolution kernel by sums of exponential functions. Likewise, this corresponds to a rational function approximation of the exact non-reflecting boundary kernel in the frequency-domain. The boundary conditions are validated against two numerical test cases. The first test case mimics Tyler-Sofrin modes present in turbomachinery applications by prescribing 2d acoustic modes in a uniform flow. The second test case is concerned with the potential contamination of blade flutter analyses by spurious reflections on artificial boundaries. For the benchmark problem Standard Configuration 10, blade flutter with non-zero inter-blade phase angle, acoustic resonance generates spinning waves susceptible to reflection. Contrasting the results of non-reflecting boundary conditions of varying order of accuracy shows that low order conditions can fail for challenging cases, which emphasizes the need for an accurate non-reflecting boundary treatment.

This paper presents probabilistic fracture mechanics analyses of nuclear piping with an embedded crack. If the same crack depth and the same aspect ratio are supposed to both the surface and the embedded cracks, break and leak probabilities of the embedded crack case are much smaller than those of the surface crack case. This is because both of length and area of the embedded crack are one half of those of the surface crack, and when the center position of the embedded crack is close to the pipe surface, the crack comes out to the outside of the pipe partially. Consequently, an effective crack size is smaller than that given by probabilistic density function. Even when both of the area and aspect ratio of the embedded crack are the same as those of the surface crack, this tendency does not change. Although the embedded crack grows in the two directions of an inner and an outer surface of the pipe and the crack growth rate is higher than that of the surface crack, this effect does not appear in the failure probability clearly. The surface crack is effective for conservative evaluation, but it is not proper for a rational evaluation. Employing the realistic embedded crack model can lead to rational failure probability.

Our contemporary world is presently facing formidable challenges that require inter-generational and interdisciplinary. Only such answers can encourage and develop community building and foster learning. This research paper describes a unique inter-generational project that was proposed to function by taking advantage of Web 2.0 technology. This case study highlights benefits and challenges of using Web 2.0 in learning through facilitating inter-generational collaborative learning. Using Web 2.0 technology we have constructed a practical learning framework in which both young and mature participants took part in learning experiences. Such Web 2.0 inter-generational programming allows mature adults to fulfill roles of mentor, under the supervision of a teacher, becoming collaborative learning mates for young people. At the same time our learning experiment offered a positive one-on-one interaction between young and mature generation. This article articulates characteristics of the program, of the participants and analysis the results obtained. Ultimately, qualitative research argued that Web 2.0 inter-generational learning is a powerful means of nurturing learning and positive social behavior. Quantitative data proved that this learning program possesses the potential to build powerful inter-generational relations among participants that contribute with learning and social capital. As a result both generations receive support for their individual development, within a community. The rationale of this study case is supported by a comprehensive bibliography that covers family, sociology and education. We review several studies related to our project and provide recommendations for those interested in applying this collaborative inter-generational Web 2.0 method to their community.

Abstract Cortical bone is a complex hierarchical composite lamallae structure consisting, in general, of a mineral phase (calcium hydroxyapatite), an organic phase (collagen) and fluid [1]. In the analysis of bone, the liquid phase is usually neglected, an assumption that is reasonable for steady state or quasi-static loading. However, when cortical bone is loaded dynamically in the axial direction, the presence of the constrained fluid generates time-dependent stresses in the tangential direction. Since the tangential stress acts perpendicular to the weak transverse direction of the bone, it can create damage in this direction. Cyclic axial compressive loading will result in cyclic tensile loading in the tangential direction which can eventually result in fatigue damage. Such damage has actually been observed in studies conducted on heavily exercised race horses where damage was observed in the form of micro cracks oriented perpendicular to the tangential direction and whose fracture planes lie along the axial direction [2]. In this work, cortical bone is modeled as a biphasic material consisting of a permeable composite material filled with fluid. The geometry considered is that of a hollow cylinder made up of multiple concentric permeable lamellae filled with fluid (Fig. 1). When this structure is loaded axially in compression, a tensile tangential stress is developed which decays with time. The decay rate is a function of permeability and radial position. The greater the permeability, the faster the decay rate. The tangential stress peaks at the inner radius and decreases with radial position (Fig. 2). The tangential stress also peaks earlier at the inner radius. The rate of decay is slower at the outside surface where the bone is subjected to the tangential stress for a much longer time than at the inner surface (Fig. 2). This view of bone as a biphasic structure subjected to dynamic loading may provide a rationale for some of the damage modes observed in vivo in bones subjected to cyclic and impact loading.

Using a two dimensional compressible flow representation of axial compressor dynamics, a control-theoretic input-output model is derived which is of general utility in rotating stall/surge active control studies. The derivation presented here begins with a review of the fluid dynamic model, which is a 2D stage stacking technique that accounts for blade row pressure rise, loss and deviation as well as blade row and inter-blade row compressible flow. This model is extended to include the effects of the upstream and downstream geometry and boundary conditions, and then manipulated into a transfer function form that dynamically relates actuator motion to sensor measurements. Key relationships in this input-output form are then approximated using rational polynomials. Further manipulation yields an approximate model which is in standard form for studying active control of rotating stall and surge. As an example of high current relevance, the transfer function from an array of jet actuators to an array of static pressure sensors is derived. Numerical examples are also presented, including a demonstration of the importance of proper choice of sensor and actuator locations, as well as a comparison between sensor types. Under a variety of conditions, it was found that sensor locations near the front of the compressor or in the downstream gap are consistently the best choices, based on a quadratic optimization criterion and a specific 3-stage compressor model. The modeling and evaluation procedures presented here are a first step toward a rigorous approach to the design of active control systems for high speed axial compressors.

Abstract Steady divergent flow (inspiratory directed) is measured using Laser Doppler Velocimetry in large scale models carefully mimicing the morphometry of small human airways. We Evaluated the anatomical features which induced vorticity in the flow from a vorticity free entrance, under conditions of convective similitude (simultaneous Reynolds And Dean’s Numbers). Five symmetrical bifurcation models with different bifurcation angles and curvature ratios are tested. A flow separation (carina) in each model is shaped to anatomical measures and the conformation of the transition between parent and daughter branches representing the morphmetric mean shape defined from casts of human airways. The flow pattern in the daughter tubes is typical of laminar flow within the entrance (diameter/axial length < 5) to sharp bends (Dean number > 500), with rapid development of strong secondary flows (maximum secondary velocity is 40% of mean axial velocity) consisting of two main vortices, with two smaller and weaker secondary vortex activities towards the inner wall of curvature. These may be time dependent interrelation with these vortices causing warbling at specific flow conditions. The calculated vorticity transport along the flow axis showed interaction between the viscous forces at the new boundary layer development along the carinal wall and centrifugal forces of curvature, with a significant influence by the upstream flow prior to the entering the actual flow division. This interplay resulted in an overshoot of the calculated vorticity transport comparable to flow entering curved bends an a suppression for the tendency to separate at the inner wall of these tight bends. The maximum primary flow velocities are skewed towards the carinal side (outer wall of curvature) and development of a second peak occurred with convection of the higher velocity elements towards the inner wall of curvature by the strong secondary flow. The appearance of the second peak depends mainly on the curvature ratio of the daughter tubes. This study is the “baseline” observation for a airway structure to function analysis. The observed flow patterns have high influence on conductive mixing, particle deposition, volume flow distribution, gaseous scrubbing (absorption at the liquid wall surfaces), and conductive-diffusive axial dispersion mechanism; all critical features for respiration. Detailed velocity measurements are carried out in all models at different axial locations. The locations are chosen according to the expected rate of velocity alterations in the models. Figures 1 to 4 show some typical primary and secondary velocities in models 1 (1/7 curvature ration and 70° bifurcation angle) and 4 (1/14 curvature ratio and 70° bifurcation angle at Reynolds number of 1500 based on the parent tube diameter. As can be seen in Figures 1 and 2, the second peak is not observed in model 4 while it is clearly observed in model 1.

It was the occurrence of the “vicious infection - SARS CoV 2” at the territory of Planet Earth which also initiated the subject professional research in the area of applied thermal engineering within two partial units which may be in interaction with the infection, i.e. which may also be in causal connection: “applied thermal engineering in building stock (only business and residential buildings)”- “sophisticated thermotechnical system integrated in a business or residential building”- “pathogenic microorganisms”. When general, professional and/or scientific public was faced with occurrence of plentitude of information, misinformation, interpretations, misconceptions, and/or ambiguities in the “black box of SARS CoV 2 pandemic”, the subject research was initiated in an analytical and principled manner with application of methods of analysis based on the “logic of rational action” in the given area. The aspects of the approach are adapted to the subject of the research, imperatively and consecutively imposed by the need for analysis and evaluation of causality between the given partial units and pathogenic microorganisms. In relation to the accepted partial units in the stage of utilization of the existing business or residential building for the dedicated purpose, the findings point that, inter alia, if such buildings were constructed as a result of conscientious, competent, responsible, and highly professional work of multidisciplinary builders and if they comprise adequate integrated sophisticated thermotechnical systems which have systematic, functional, and operating capability and which achieve satisfactory target function of the system, they do not “generate” pathogenic microorganisms, do not participate in their transfer, do not intensify their pathogenic properties and activity, do not contribute to occurrence of pandemics, do not jeopardize human health, and do not cause their mortality, etc. but are basically also not intended to “destroy” pathogenic microorganisms reaching the system from the outside and/or treated limited closed spaced within the building frequented by people off their working activities and/or pursuing their working activities, individually or in groups. Depending on the type of the current sophisticated thermotechnical system in the building, if necessary, it is possible to perform interventions aimed at reconstruction so as to “immunize” the system in a manner which may be recognized and designed by professional, competent, experienced, and dedicated thermal engineers. It needs to be noted that the subject exploration is conducted for deontological reasons, with the aim to promote theory and practice in the given.

In Japan, the first Interim Storage Facility of spent nuclear fuel away from reactor site is being planned to start its commercial operation around 2010, in use of dual-purpose metal cask in the northern part of Main Japan Island. Business License Examination for safety design approval has started since March, 2007. To demonstrate the more scientific and rational performance of safety regulation activities on each phase for the first license procedure, CREPEI has executed demonstration tests with full scale casks, such as drop tests onto real targets without impact limiters and seismic tests subjected to strong earthquake motions. Moreover, it is important to develop the knowledge for the inherent security of metal casks under extreme mechanical-impact conditions, especially for increasing interest since the terrorist attacks from 11th September 2001. This paper presents dynamic mechanical behavior of the metal cask lid closure system caused by direct aircraft engine crash and describes calculated results (especially, leak tightness based on relative dynamic displacements between metallic seals). Firstly, the local penetration damage of the interim storage facility building by a big passenger aircraft engine crash (diameter 2.7m, length 4.3m, weight 4.4ton, impact velocity 90m/s) has been examined. The reduced velocity is calculated by the local damage formula for concrete structure with its thickness of 70cm. The load vs. time function for this reduced velocity (60m/s) is estimated by the impact analysis using Finite Element code LS-DYNA with the full scale engine model onto a hypothetically rigid target. Secondly, as the most critical scenarios for the metal cask, two impact scenarios (horizontal impact hitting the cask and vertical impact onto the lid metallic seal system) are chosen. To consider the geometry of all bolts for two lids, the gasket reaction forces and the inner pressure of the cask cavity, the detailed three dimensional FEM models are developed and calculated. Main criteria for estimating the maximum leakage rate for the lid metallic seal system are no loss of the pre-stress of the lid bolts, no appearance of the plastic region between the metal seal flanges, and no large relative deformation of the lid seals. Finally, in both cases, the low leakage rate for the metal cask lid closure system under the impulsive loads due to aircraft engine crash will be proved thoroughly.

This report critically examines the nature of the distinction between traditional inter-state diplomacy and sustainable development diplomacy. It then sets out the institutional changes which are necessary for the achievement of sustainable development diplomacy. Multi-stakeholder partnerships have been identified as a key means of implementation for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Given the increasing centrality of the United States (US)–China relationship in global development cooperation, understanding the modalities of their engagement may provide useful insights into how partnerships may be cultivated and deepened to realise the SDGs. The Covid-19 pandemic and climate change have demonstrated the interconnection of the world, as well as the interconnection of challenges of the world. Sustainable development diplomacy is needed now more than ever to prioritise development strategies of different states and work on common shared challenges. Sustainable development diplomacy can only work when different actors recognise the value of the common goals and are willing to make an effort to accomplish them. Global sustainable development diplomacy requires a stronger policy agenda and greater cohesion. This report explores the idea of sustainable development diplomacy and, through two sectoral case studies, explores the nature, function, and rationale for interactive engagement. The form and structure of multi-actor relationships are a response to complex, trans-border political, social, economic, and environmental challenges which require a more nuanced and varied management approach than narrowly defined state-led development. However, the power dynamics, the modalities, and experiences of engagement that underpin these dynamic relationships, remain understudied, especially with regard to their impact on sustainable development.

In this project, we studied the photosynthetic apparatus during dehydration and rehydration of the homoiochlorophyllous resurrection plant Craterostigmapumilum (retains most of the photosynthetic components during desiccation). Resurrection plants have the remarkable capability to withstand desiccation, being able to revive after prolonged severe water deficit in a few days upon rehydration. Homoiochlorophyllous resurrection plants are very efficient in protecting the photosynthetic machinery against damage by reactive oxygen production under drought. The main purpose of this BARD project was to unravel these largely unknown protection strategies for C. pumilum. In detail, the specific objectives were: (1) To determine the distribution and local organization of photosynthetic protein complexes and formation of inverted hexagonal phases within the thylakoid membranes at different dehydration/rehydration states. (2) To determine the 3D structure and characterize the geometry, topology, and mechanics of the thylakoid network at the different states. (3) Generation of molecular models for thylakoids at the different states and study the implications for diffusion within the thylakoid lumen. (4) Characterization of inter-system electron transport, quantum efficiencies, photosystem antenna sizes and distribution, NPQ, and photoinhibition at different hydration states. (5) Measuring the partition of photosynthetic reducing equivalents between the Calvin cycle, photorespiration, and the water-water cycle. At the beginning of the project, we decided to use C. pumilum instead of C. wilmsii because the former species was available from our collaborator Dr. Farrant. In addition to the original two dehydration states (40 relative water content=RWC and 5% RWC), we characterized a third state (15-20%) because some interesting changes occurs at this RWC. Furthermore, it was not possible to detect D1 protein levels by Western blot analysis because antibodies against other higher plants failed to detect D1 in C. pumilum. We developed growth conditions that allow reproducible generation of different dehydration and rehydration states for C. pumilum. Furthermore, advanced spectroscopy and microscopy for C. pumilum were established to obtain a detailed picture of structural and functional changes of the photosynthetic apparatus in different hydrated states. Main findings of our study are: 1. Anthocyan accumulation during desiccation alleviates the light pressure within the leaves (Fig. 1). 2. During desiccation, stomatal closure leads to drastic reductions in CO2 fixation and photorespiration. We could not identify alternative electron sinks as a solution to reduce ROS production. 3. On the supramolecular level, semicrystalline protein arrays were identified in thylakoid membranes in the desiccated state (see Fig. 3). On the electron transport level, a specific series of shut downs occur (summarized in Fig. 2). The main events include: Early shutdown of the ATPase activity, cessation of electron transport between cyt. bf complex and PSI (can reduce ROS formation at PSI); at higher dehydration levels uncoupling of LHCII from PSII and cessation of electron flow from PSII accompanied by crystal formation. The later could severe as a swift PSII reservoir during rehydration. The specific order of events in the course of dehydration and rehydration discovered in this project is indicative for regulated structural transitions specifically realized in resurrection plants. This detailed knowledge can serve as an interesting starting point for rationale genetic engineering of drought-tolerant crops.
