Streszczenie:
The aim of the paper is to define the limits of substitution and phase stability for solidsolutions of orthovanadates with zircon structure Sc1–xLnxVO4, where Ln is a rare-earth element(REE), Ln = Ce – Lu. The mixing energies (interaction parameters) and critical decompositiontemperatures of Sc1–xLnxVO4 solid solutions with the zircon structure were calculated using thecrystal-energy theory of isomorphous miscibility. Diagram of thermodynamic stability visualizingthe substitution limits (x) by the decomposition temperature or the decomposition temperature bythe substitution limits, the dependencies of the decomposition temperatures on the REE atomicnumbers is presented. This diagram also allows assessing areas of stability, instability, andmetastability for Sc1–xLnxVO4 solid solutions. Results of calculations were compared with literaturedata on thermodynamic stability of solid solutions and on substitution limits. The results of thisstudy can be used in the development of new luminescent materials based on ScVO4 modified withREE, in the selection of REE for matrix and activator, in defining optimal proportions of REE inSc1–xLnxVO4 matrices.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Because of their unique structure and properties, rare-earth (REE) orthovanadates have been extensively employed for decades in advanced ceramics, in particular in the laser industry in replacement of Nd:YAG. A Ca-bearing REE orthovanadate with the empirical formula (Ce0.279Ca0.271Y0.267Gd0.057Nd0.055Dy0.032Sm0.027La0.020Th0.027Sr0.002)(V0.9085+Cr0.0673+Fe0.0173+As0.0055+)O4⋅nH2O has been found in metacherts from Praborna (Italian Alps) as micrometer-sized euhedral crystals in clinopyroxene + plagioclase symplectites replacing eclogite-facies vanadium-bearing omphacite (Aegirine55–48Jadeite42–33Diopside10–8 with V2O3 ≤ 1.39 wt%). We applied the synchrotron radiation, single crystal, micro-diffraction technique, recently optimized at ID09A beamline (ESRF, France), to determine the crystal structure of this mineral. It is tetragonal and isostructural with zircon, with a = 7.2233(12) Å, c = 6.3949(18) Å, V = 333.66(13) Å3, Z = 4, space group I41/amd, and it has been therefore identified as Ca- and Y-bearing wakefieldite-(Ce) (ideally CeV5+O4). Cell parameters are in agreement with those of synthetic Ce0.7Ca0.3VO4. Raman spectra of the studied wakefieldite-(Ce) are comparable with natural and synthetic wakefieldite-(Ce) spectra and revealed the presence of OH groups and/or water of hydration, which is also suggested by the low totals in microprobe analyses. Mass balance indicates that wakefieldite-(Ce) is a by-product of the omphacite breakdown; omphacite and Mn-rich epidote, a minor reactant, provided vanadium and REE, respectively. Petrological observations and thermodynamic modeling suggest that the mineral, coexisting with hematite, Mn-rich epidote, and braunite, formed during retrogression to greenschistfacies conditions at ultra-oxidized conditions (DFMQ ≥ +16 log units), which are often observed in Mn-oxide ores. Wakefieldite is an effective scavenger of REE in oxidized geological environments at P-T conditions that range from sedimentary to medium-grade metamorphic settings, even where the REE bulk concentration is negligible. Its rarity reflects both the overall low abundance of vanadium and the need for ultra-oxidized conditions that are rarely achieved in metamorphic rocks, where REE phosphates (i.e., monazite, xenotime) are commonly found instead.

Streszczenie:
Background. Previously, the antitumor activity of nanocomplexes (NCs) containing nanoparticles of rare earth metal orthovanadates GdYEuVO4 and cholesterol has been approved when applied in 9:1 ratio (the cells-to-NCs), which can be considered as a conditionally therapeutic dose. Therefore, studying the potential risks of NCs exposure in terms of functional activity of hematopoietic progenitor cells is relevant. Рurpose – determining a toxic effect of NCs on functional activity of hematopoietic cells of bone marrow (BM). Materials and Methods. The study was performed in BM cells of CBA/H mice. Nanocomplexes were synthesized at Institute for Scintillation Materials of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. BM cells with NCs were incubated in the ratios as follows: 9BM:1NCs; 1BM:1NCs; 1BM:9NCs, followed by assessing the number of apoptotic/necrotic cells in BM using FITC Annexin V Apoptosis Detection Kit I (BD, USA) by means of “FACS Calibur” flow cytometer (“BD”, USA). Hematopoietic progenitor cells of BM were functionally evaluated in vivo by determining the content of colony-forming units of the spleen (CFUs) and the number of myelokaryocytes in lethally irradiated recipients on day 8 after administering BM cells, pre-incubated with NCs. Survival of irradiated recipient mice after BM administration was recorded 12 days long. Results and discussion. The dose-dependent effect of functional potential in- hibition for BM hematopoietic progenitor cells under NCs influence has been established. Although, in vitro processing the BM cells with a conditionally therapeutic dose of NCs (9BM:1NCs) before administration to irradiated animal caused remodeling of cell membranes and contributed to apoptotic manifes- tations, but it did not lead to strong changes in their colony-forming potential and did not reduce the number of BM cells in animals if compared with the introduced BM cells without NCs treatment. Increasing the NCs concentration five- and tenfold significantly reduced the colony-forming potential of BM cells, caused BM hypoplasia and a crucial reduction in the survival of recipient animals, indicating possible toxic effects of this compound when administered at high concentrations. Conclusions. The toxic effect of NCs is detected only when certain concen- trations, significantly exceeding the conditionally therapeutic dose previously determined when treating the experimental oncology diseases, are used.

Streszczenie:
Adult stem cells, such as MSCs, spontaneously differentiate in vitro. This makes it difficult both to study this important cell type and to grow large numbers of MSCs for clinical use. While conventional cell cultivation methods cannot cope with this problem, nanostructured materials science offers hope. The effect of small-sized spherical nanoparticles based on orthovanadates of rare-earth elements activated by europium (GdYVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles, diameter 1–2 nm) on cell-cell adhesion of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBM-MSCs) in vitro was studied using electrophoretic separation of proteins, immunofluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Our study revealed that rBM-MSCs treated with small-sized GdYVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles had a significant impairment of intercellular adhesion in vitro. The pre-incubation of mesenchymal stem cells of rat bone marrow with GdYVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystals at a non-toxic concentration of 0.5 µg/mL during 1 hour of cultivation did not lead to significant changes in cell monolayer, the number of cells and the area of cell bodies did not change. However, the density of the monolayer and the area of the cell field decreased after the incubation. The incubation of cells with nanoparticles led to an increase in the area of the intercellular gate – a location of disruption of cell adhesion, compared to cells without nanoparticles in culture medium. The pre-incubation of rBM-MSCs with nanocrystals caused no changes in the content of total cadherins in the plasma membrane; a decrease in the content of cytoplasmic calreticulin and an increase in the content of surface calreticulin; a decrease in the content of free calcium in the cytoplasm, and an increase in protein-bound intercellular calcium and calcium in the extracellular space. The colocalization analysis revealed that the colocalization of calreticulins with cadherins on the outer surface of the plasma membrane of cells significantly increased after the incubation with GdYVO4:Eu3+ nanocrystals. The paper proposes a possible mechanism of reducing the degree of adhesion by nanocrystals. This study emphasizes the possibility of modulating MSCs adhesion using GdYVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles. The development of new technologies capable of mitigating adhesion is crucial for the development of regenerative strategies using stem cells.

Streszczenie:
Lanthanum orthovanadate (LaVO4) is the only stable monazite-type rare-earth orthovanadate. In the present paper the equation of state of LaVO4is studied usingin situhigh-pressure powder diffraction at room temperature, andab initiocalculations within the framework of the density functional theory. The parameters of a second-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state,i.e.those fitted to the experimental and theoretical data, are found to be in perfect agreement – in particular, the bulk moduli are almost identical, with values of 106 (1) and 105.8 (5) GPa, respectively. In agreement with recent reported experimental data, the compression is shown to be anisotropic. Its nature is comparable to that of some other monazite-type compounds. The softest compression direction is determined.

Streszczenie:
The 0.5 at.% Nd-doped gadolinium and yttrium orthovanadate, Nd:GdVO4 (NGV) and Nd:YVO4 (NYV), crystallize in the tetragonal space group I41/amd and are of a zircon-type structure with the lattice constants a = b = 0.7212(6) and c = 0.6348(3) nm for NGV and a = b = 0.7123(5) and c = 0.6292(5) nm for NYV. At high and room temperatures, the Raman spectra of NYV are much the same; however, the Raman spectra of NGV are different from those of NYV. The scattering intensity of NGV is largely stronger than that of NYV. Nonharmonic effect of the lattice thermal vibrations, including the thermal conductivity and expansion, is theoretically and experimentally discussed. The theoretical results roughly indicate that a crystal with the larger integrated intensities of the Raman-scattering peaks under the cutoff value of linear dependence of Debye frequency versus the temperature has the larger thermal conductivity. The experimental data of the thermal conductivity of the five samples show that the thermal conductivity of NGV is more outstanding than that of NYV in every direction. Compared the integrated intensity ratio IG/IY between the NGV and NYV Raman-scattering peaks under the cutoff wavenumber of Debye frequency with the ratio κG/κY of their crystal thermal conductivity, it may be seen that the Raman results are basically in agreement with the conductivity measurements within our experimental error. The experimental datum of the thermal conductivity of NYAG (Nd-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) with the cubic symmetry and stable laser properties and thermodynamics parameters, which is often considered as a comparable standard, approximately approaches to the average value of the NGV thermal conductivity in the a and c directions. The thermal-expansion data of NGV exhibit its small line-expansion coefficients, which imply that the large thermal conductivity is needed and existential and that NGV is more capable to bear a large temperature gradient, therefore, is also more suitable as a solid-state laser material than NYV crystals.

Streszczenie:
Determination of the influence of redox nanomaterials on the body of males is of great interest to researchers, because the basis of the pathogenesis of male infertility is oxidative stress. A necessary condition in the development of such drugs is the absence of toxic effects on sexual function. It has been proved that nanomaterials based on oxides of rare earth elements have a positive effect on reproductive capacity and, at the same time, they are not gonadotoxic. A comprehensive approach is of particular importance in order to justify their use as a means of reproductive capacity correction. Taking into account the toxicity parameters the mechanisms of their action need to be studied at the biochemical, morphological and clinical levels. The positive effect of gadolinium orthovanadate nanoparticles on the quality of boar sperm (especially in terms of motility and the number of motile sperm in the ejaculate) with an effective reduction of the oxidative load on the body have been shown. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of these nanoparticles on the hormonal background of males with a decreased reproductive capacity under oxidative stress. Thus, the administration of hydrosol of gadolinium orthovanadate nanoparticles for 14 days revealed a normalization of sex hormones – an increase in total testosterone, in particular, on the 15th day of the study – by 22.6 % (P ˂ 0.01), and on the 30th day – by 77.4 % (P ˂ 0.001) compared with the group of animals before the administration. There was a decrease in the level of 17β-estradiol on the 30th day – by 25.0 % (P ˂ 0.01), which almost reached the values of the control group. A decrease in the content of globulin testosterone-estradiol-binding in boars of the experimental group, in particular, on the 15th day of the experiment – by 13.0 % (P ˂ 0.05), and on the 30th day – by 26.8 % (P ˂ 0.001) was determined, which, in turn, led to an increase in androgen saturation of the animal body – the index of free androgens at the end of the study was 43.2 %. The results are explained by the properties of the nanoparticles. Correcting oxidative stress, they increase the antioxidant potential, thereby normalizing the activity of endocrine glands and ways of regulating the germ-endocrine function of the gonads. The prospect of further research is to elucidate the effect of the correction of decreased reproductive capacity in boars under oxidative stress by nanoparticles of oxides of rare earth elements on the morphological state of the gonads.

Streszczenie:
The prohibition of using antibiotics with growth-stimulating properties in the European Union led to the search for new, safer, more effective, and cheaper feed additives. One of these substances was rare earth elements (REE, atomic numbers 57–71) due to their low toxicity and protective and antioxidant properties. At the same time, higher efficiency of organic forms of REE was noted. Thanks to this, it is possible to assume their even more pronounced effect in nano-sized form as feed additives and the need to conduct research in this direction. Therefore, this work aims to study the metabolic parameters of the blood in rats under long-term oral administration of nanoparticles of one of the representatives of rare earth elements – gadolinium orthovanadate (NP GdVO4:Eu3+) under food stress. Experimental samples of gadolinium orthovanadate nanoparticles activated by Europium (spindle-shaped geometry; size 8×25 nm; initial concentration 1.0 g/dm3) were used in work. Experimental studies on rats were carried out based on the vivarium of the NSC “IEKVM”. The object of research was 140 mature male Wistar rats with an initial weight of 180–200 g. Four groups of animals, 35 rats each, were formed according to the principle of analogs. During the experiment, animals of the control group received drinking water without additives; rats of the І experimental group were given a solution of NP GdVO4:Eu3+ at a dose of 0.2 mg/dm3 (≈ 0.03 mg/kg of body weight); II research group – at a dose of 1.0 mg/dm3 (≈ 0.15 mg/kg of body weight) and rats of III research group – at a dose of 2.0 mg/dm3 (≈ 0.30 mg/kg of body weight). Drinking was carried out for 56 days, then it was completed, and the rats were observed for another 14 days. A nutritionally unbalanced diet was used as a stress factor. Taking into account the results of biochemical studies, the adaptogenic effect of NP GdVO4:Eu3+ in the range of doses of 0.2–1.0 mg/dm3 of drinking water (≈ 0.03–0.15 mg/kg of body weight) on the body of white rats was established under conditions of food stress with optimal duration of action – 28–42 days. Under the conditions of administration at a dose of 2.0 mg/dm3 of drinking water (≈ 0.30 mg/kg of body weight), a hepatic(cyto-)toxic effect of nanoparticles was detected, which was accompanied by an irreversible decrease in the structural indicators of lipid metabolism, the consumption of antioxidant resources and the induction of intensity processes of lipid peroxidation against the background of alanine aminotransferase hyperenzymemia.

During this period, the greatest amount of obtained nanomaterials based on transition of rare earth metals, some of which have significant biological activity. In particular, vanadium compounds have expressive insulin-mimetic action and gadolinium orthovanadate (GdVO4) in nanoform capable in aging laboratory animals inhibit the development of age-related changes, namely a gradual increase (in the physiological range) age glucose level, body weight, reduction of the nervous system reactions and increases the sperm concentration. Given the urgency of anti-aging drug development focus, found a positive effect on spermatogenesis and the lack of information on the effect of this compound on the functional state of the gonads, studied morphofunctional status and endocrine function of the testes in older (18–18.5 months) male rats in long-term (70 days) using nanoparticles (NP) based on GdVO4 dose of 0.33 mg/kg body weight. It was establish the positive effect on bass GdVO4 testicular hormonal function, as evidenced by an increase in serum testosterone (56.3 % at 60 days compared to the injection on the 20th day). It was not found gonadotoxical impact bass GdVO4, as in the seminiferous tubules of the main animals present full pool of germ cells spermatogenesis. Morphometric parameters of glands histological structure indicate the activation of spermatogenesis, which may be due to increasing activity of hormone-producing testes of animals after chronic use NPs GdVO4.

Streszczenie:
Due to rare earth doping, phosphates and vanadates are the leading materials for the synthesis of phosphors due to their thermal stability, low sintering temperature, and chemical stability. Phosphors in the nanoscale state are of particular interest. The simple, fast, and scalable synthesis of nanophosphors with high chemical homogeneity is a priority task. The purpose of this work was to synthesize powders of mixed yttrium vanadate-phosphate crystals of various compositions by coprecipitation under the action of microwave radiation and spray pyrolysis, as well as to compare the characteristics ofthe obtained samples. Samples of YVхP1–хO4 of different compositions were synthesized by coprecipitation under the action of microwave radiation and spray pyrolysis in different modes. In the case of the synthesis of yttrium vanadate-phosphate YVхP1–хO4 by spray pyrolysis followed by annealing, according to the X-ray phase analysis data, single-phase nanopowders were formed. The morphological characteristics of the samples were revealed by the methods of transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Depending on the annealing conditions, the samples were either faceted or spherical particlesless than 100 nm in size. The composition of the YVхP1–хO4 , samples synthesized by the coprecipitation method under the action of microwave radiation strongly depended on the pH of the precursor solution. The minimum content of impurity phases was reached at pH 9.Spray pyrolysis allows the synthesis of yttrium vanadate phosphate YVхP1–хO4 nanopowders of high chemical homogeneity with a particle size of less than 100 nm. The maximum chemical homogeneity of yttrium vanadate-phosphate powders was achieved at pH = 9 during the synthesis of YVхP1–хO4 by coprecipitation under the action of microwave radiation. However, the particle size dispersion was large, within the range of 2–60 μm. References 1. Wu C., Wang Y., Jie W. Streszczenie:
AbstractStudy of quantum magnetism in rare earth orthovanadates (RVO4, R = rare earth) is a topic which is currently being investigated by the condensed matter physicists. In this work, through both experimental and theoretical tools, we report the presence of field induced magnetic phase, attributed to fifth order susceptibility, in TbVO4, at low temperatures. The structural transition reported around 31 K, results in the formation of pseudospin—$${\raise0.7ex\hbox{$1$} \!\mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {1 2}}\right.\kern-0pt} \!\lower0.7ex\hbox{$2$}}$$ 1 / 2 doublet ground state separated by an energy δ. Temperature dependent heat capacity indicates toward an increment in δ, on application of magnetic fields. Above 10 kOe, the Zeeman energy associated with magnetic anisotropy strengthens, resulting in an enhanced splitting of the pseudo-doublet ground state. This increased splitting stabilizes the magnetic phase associated with higher order moments. These observations are further supported by our theoretical model to evaluate δ, as a function of applied field. Our study provides a platform to study the possible presence of higher order moments in other Jahn–Teller systems.

he effect of preparation conditions on the composition and structure of three-dimensional composite nanomaterials based on opal matrixes (packing of spherical particles of amorphous SiO2) has been studied. The experimental part of the work was performed with the samples of opal matrixes with a diameter of spherical SiO2 particles equal ~260 nm. Composite nanomaterials were formed by repeatedly filling of opal matrixes with solutions of metal salts (oxides) and holding the samples at 623–723 K, and after that, they were annealed at 973–1473 K. Chemical reactions and phase transformations of substances in nanopores of opal matrixes depended on the annealing parameters, and chemical properties of intermediate compounds. There was confirmed the formation of SiO2 crystallites in nanopores of composite nanomaterials, as well as the products of their interaction with SiO2. Composite nanomaterials with filling of opal matrix nanopores with metals, ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics, multiferroic and other substances have been obtained. The resulting composite nanomaterials had ordered components (substances) with a given composition and crystallite size in the range of 10–90 nm. The influence of the composition and structure of composite nanomaterials containing ferromagnetically ordered nanostructured magnetic orthovanadates of rare-earth metals, Ni-Zn-Fe-, Co-Zn-Fe-spinel, and also Co and Ni together, on their properties was demonstrated. Present research was executed under financial support by RFBR (Grant N 18-29-02076).

Streszczenie:
Abstract Introduction. Rare-earth orthovanadate nanoparticles (ReVO4:Eu3+, Re = Gd, Y or La) are promising agents for photodynamic therapy of cancer due to their modifiable redox properties. However, their toxicity limits their application. Objective. The aim of this research was to elucidate pro-eryptotic effects of GdVO4:Eu3+ and LaVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles with identification of underlying mechanisms of eryptosis induction and to determine their pharmacological potential in eryptosis-related diseases. Methods. Blood samples (n=9) were incubated for 24 h with 0-10-20-40-80 mg/L GdVO4:Eu3+ or LaVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles, washed and used to prepare erythrocyte suspensions to analyze the cell membrane scrambling (annexin-V-FITC staining), cell shrinkage (forward scatter signaling), reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation through 2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (H2DCFDA) staining and intracellular Ca2+ levels via FLUO4 AM staining by flow cytometry. Internalization of europium-enabled luminescent GdVO4:Eu3+ and LaVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles was assessed by confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results. Both nanoparticles triggered eryptosis at concentrations of 80 mg/L. ROS-mediated mechanisms were not involved in rare-earth orthovanadate nanoparticles-induced eryptosis. Elevated cytosolic Ca2+ concentrations were revealed even at subtoxic concentrations of nanoparticles. LaVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles increased intracellular calcium levels in a more pronounced way compared with GdVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles. Our data disclose that the small-sized (15 nm) GdVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles were internalized after a 24 h incubation, while the large-sized (~30 nm) LaVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles were localized preferentially around erythrocytes. Conclusions. Both internalized GdVO4:Eu3+ and non-internalized LaVO4:Eu3+ nanoparticles (80 mg / L) promote eryptosis of erythrocytes after a 24 h exposure in vitro via Ca2+ signaling without involvement of oxidative stress. Eryptosis is a promising model for assessing nanotoxicity.
