The problem of the need for construction of railways in the North Caucasus as a strategically and economically important enterprise for maintaining and developing the viability of the region is considered. Preconditions and opinions on the appropriateness of railway connection are given. To achieve this goal in the region, it was decided to establish a new joint-stock company of the Rostov-Vladikavkaz railway. The dynamics is investigated from planning, choosing the final direction from those proposed by the engineers who carried out surveys on the ground, to the actual opening of permanent traffic on the first (main) line of the Rostov-on-Don - Vladikavkaz Society - the first highway that connected the Caucasus with the central part of the state in 1875 ... A brief description of this path is given. The geography of the line was investigated. Some stages of further development are given, the results and opinions obtained during the operation of the road are summed up. The issue of location and development of the Rostov railway junction is considered. Already in the first years of operation, the enormous potential of railway transport in the North Caucasus was obvious, not only strategically, but also as an economically important enterprise that opened up new opportunities for the development of the region, which in turn made the railway the main industrial giant.

The article attempts to investigate the historical circumstances of the formation and development of railway infrastructure in Stanytsia Luhanska (1898–1945), a village that became a key logistics center in the immediate vicinity of the demarcation line amid the escalation of the military confrontation in Donbas. Based on a comprehensive analysis of sources and scientific literature, it is proved that the construction of railways in the Donbass had a fundamental impact on economic development and the formation of transport infrastructure in Stanytsia Luhanska. It was found that the Kindrashivska landing platform, which formed the basis for the formation of the first hub station, was built during the construction of the Luhansk-Millerovo branch in the mid-1890s on the territory of the Kondrashov hamlet adjacent to the village. The history of the foundation and pre-war period of development of repair and maintenance enterprises of Kindrashivska-Nova station is analyzed. In the mid-1930s, against the background of the construction of the Moscow-Donbass coal highway on the territory of Stanytsia Luhanska, the key infrastructure of the railway settlement and hub enterprises of the second Kindrashivska station was laid, which is used to ensure the transportation process to this day. We believe that further study of the proposed topic requires clarification of a wide range of issues related to economic activity and technological development of local stations on the basis of materials currently inaccessible to the State Archives of Luhansk region and Luhansk Directorate of Railways of Donetsk Railway.

The article explores the formation of the Russian Administration of Galician Railways in the autumn of 1914. The occupation of Eastern Galicia by Russian troops was followed by the organisation of the civil administration of Galicia. The Galician railways were initially managed by the Southwest Railways. However, it was decided to form a separate Galician network. On October 25, 1914, the Galician Railway Administration was organized, with K.S. Nemeshaev appointed its director. Retreating from Galicia, the Austro-Hungarian army caused significant damage to Galician railways. The military situation on the front demanded fast restoration of railway communication to transport military goods and supplies for the army and evacuate the wounded. Meanwhile, the population of Galicia desperately needed regular passenger communication and freight traffic, thus the task was important both in the military and political terms. There were many factors complicating the work: the difference between the local narrow and Russian wide gauges, difficult terrain, lack of qualified personnel and rolling stock, and remoteness of Galicia. However, in the first three months of operation, the Railway Administration carried out large-scale repair and restoration work on the railway track, which had been thoroughly destroyed by the enemy during its retreat. By February 1915, the Railway Administration had been able to double its operating network. It had also begun the expansion and development of existing lines and stations and construction of new ones. Two lines were changed to the Russian gauge.

Streszczenie:
The demands of railway transport have been changing over the 150 years of existence of this type of transport in South Africa, specifically the performance requirements of the formation to cater for new traffic requirements. As such, it is important to assess the condition of this vital part of a railway track. This dissertation covers a research project conducted on two railway lines in which measurements of ground vibration were conducted in order to perform geophysical analysis and characterise the formation based on the results obtained. Measurements were taken on a 26 ton axle load track (Coal line, at Bloubank) and on a 20 ton axle load track (at Amandelbult) in South Africa. Planning and implementation of several test procedures to characterise track formation require considerable effort to minimize the impact on railway operations. Coupled with track occupation and the destructive nature of some of the test procedures, it is relevant to investigate alternative testing techniques to address the issues stated above. The use of surface waves for geotechnical characterization of sites is increasing worldwide. Applications to railway engineering have so far been limited to light load, high speed lines to minimize the use of poor geomaterials with reduced Rayleigh wave velocity. Four sites were identified where trains are operated at heavy loads, with the formation condition varying from poor to good. Seismic testing (geophysical) and conventional testing (deflection measurements) were performed at the identified sites. Seismic measurements were recorded using geophones as receivers, coupled to an amplifier and a computer. The source of the seismic events was the trains operating on the track and a hammer for impact testing. For the deflection measurements, the Remote Video Monitoring (RVM) technique was adopted. Dispersion analysis of the ground vibration experimental data was conducted using the multiple receiver method. The main conclusions reached with the analysis indicated that: __ Dispersion analysis had a good correlation with the formation deflection analysis; __ Phase velocity can be used as an indicator of the quality of a certain site; __ There are limitations when using trains as the energy source in terms of the generation of excitation frequency, which greatly reduces the phase velocity information in individual layers in the formation (i.e. wavelengths are not short enough).

Streszczenie:
Engineered pavements are a key part of the transport asset that includes flexible road pavements, railway formations and airport runways. Their design, construction and maintenance need to be economically and environmentally optimised, while meeting serviceability criteria over the design life of the pavement. The main serviceability criteria used for railway track design are the permanent deformation and track stiffness. Subgrade stiffness influences the design depth of ballast and compacted formation layers are used to improve stiffness and reduce stresses induced in the natural subgrade. The track stiffness also influences vehicle/track interaction and wear, energy required for movement, and ride quality. Knowledge of the stiffness is required for safe and economic design of the railway track structure. Several factors influence the stiffness or resilient modulus of compacted formation material including stress state, material type, and soil physical state (density and water content). A laboratory investigation was conducted on a representative subballast material, at a range of water contents, using a Cyclic Triaxial Apparatus and Cyclic Hollow Cylinder Apparatus to investigate these aspects. The resilient modulus of the clayey sand material reduced as the applied deviator stress increased, and increased under higher confining stresses and matric suction. It was found that the resilient modulus increased by a factor of six due to a reduction in water content, and thus the increase in matric suction. Principal stress rotation, representative of train induced stresses, reduced the measured resilient modulus by approximately 13% for optimum water content specimens with reducing influence for dry of optimum specimens. The results from this work emphasise the benefit of matric suction, and thus the need for well drained formation layers. They also highlight the risk of reduced stiffness and increased deformation of railway formation subject to long periods of rainfall or wetting and the potential impact of predicted climate change. Simplified stress path testing using a Cyclic Triaxial Apparatus overestimates resilient modulus, especially for saturated material subject to large number of cycles. However, the use of more advanced testing of the resilient modulus using the Cyclic Hollow Cylinder Apparatus is only suggested where high cyclic shear stresses are expected.

Streszczenie:
The demand on South African railway freight lines is growing constantly with respect to train speeds and axle loading, thus increasing the forces and stresses experienced by the track structure. This may lead to rapid track deterioration as a result of a loss in track geometry caused by the poor and nonuniform underlying support. The railway engineering industry has moved towards gaining a better understanding of track formation behaviour for development of practical and effective deflection measurement techniques that allow accurate determination of formation structural capacity, identification of track problem areas and evaluation of track condition. Thus, there is a need to develop a deflection measurement method that can accurately evaluate the track formation condition through analysis of the full deflection basin under train passage, in order to quantify the formation structural capacity based on the relevant in-service conditions. In this research study, a mechanistic-empirical method (referred to as the inverse method) is proposed with the main objective of developing an alternative method for evaluation of formation layer structural capacity through the inverse estimation of formation layers’ elastic moduli. The method was founded on surface deflection theory from falling weight deflectometer (FWD) analysis. Finite element analysis and field data from railway substructure deflections under train transient loading obtained through multi-depth deflectometers (MDDs) were used to assess the validity of the inverse method by comparing measured and modelled railway substructure responses. The results showed that substructure deflections and stresses are affected by the complex superposition of different bogie loading configurations on a particular superstructure. The increase in axle loading was found to be directly proportional to the increase in formation peak deflection. The effect of travelling speed was however insignificant for speeds less than 80 km/h. Furthermore, the load distribution in the railway substructure did not follow a 45o influence line as commonly assumed in surface deflection theory. On the contrary, railway equilibrium influence lines (EILs) were significantly influenced by the elastic moduli of the formation layers and in-situ subgrade, therefore governed by the structural capacity of the substructure layers. The research therefore concluded that the formation layers are expected to gradually deteriorate and experience increased deflections over time. However, the top of formation may vary as it seems to be highly influenced by the superstructure load distribution. The inverse method strongly agreed with the long-term formation peak strains measured with MDDs. Furthermore, the method was determined suitable for evaluation of formation structural capacity, as good agreement was found between the measured and estimated formation layers’ elastic moduli.

Streszczenie:
Despite compacted soils being unsaturated, geotechnical design is predominantly based on saturated soils, despite it being known that differences exist between the behaviour of saturated and unsaturated soils. Suction in soils has been shown to increase its strength and stiffness with the increase dependent on the degree of suction, soil type and particle arrangement. Future climate change predictions suggest an increase in average global temperatures leading to longer drier summers and wetter winters resulting in seasonal fluctuations in suction, such that unsaturated soil behaviour will become more important. Transport infrastructure such as railway tracks, founded at shallow depths, are likely to be unsaturated and influenced by variations in suction. A key parameter in assessing the performance of soils is stiffness; in particular shear modulus, however, although suction affects shear modulus, limited research has been conducted into its influence. This research, therefore, considers how variations in suction influence the small strain shear modulus of railway formation material. Soil water characteristic curves were determined, using the pressure plate apparatus and filter paper technique, for four materials covering the spectrum of railway formation materials encountered on the COALlink line in South Africa. Shear modulus measurements of specimens prepared from two of these materials were determined using a Stokoe resonant column apparatus. Suction was controlled by preparing specimens at different water contents, with the suction independently measured using the filter paper technique. Results showed that shear modulus was significantly influenced by suction and exhibited a complex behaviour. For specimens tested at their preparation water content shear modulus increased with increasing suction up to an optimum value, and then reduced as suctions exceeded this optimum value forming a bell-shaped curve. The influence of suction was seen to be greater at lower net normal stresses. Although this behavioural pattern was similar for both materials tested in the resonant column apparatus, the peak value of shear modulus increased with clay content. Importantly, the marked changes in shear modulus due to suction coincided with the suction range predicted in-situ. Tests were also conducted on specimens prepared at different water contents but the same density, airdried to very low water contents. The shear moduli of these air dried specimens were markedly higher than those of the dry and unsaturated specimens tested at their preparation water contents. Variation in measured shear modulus between specimens led to the conclusion that different particle arrangements between the specimens may have also contributed to the changes in shear modulus and were dependent on the preparation water content. At high water contents the clay particles became evenly distributed around the sand particles when the specimen was prepared, whilst, at low water contents the clay formed lumps during preparation of the material mix and became embedded with the sand particles during formation. CT scanning undertaken to look at the particle arrangement highlighted regions throughout the specimen where sand particles were embedded in lumps of clay and silt particles. These results are the first to demonstrate the importance of suction and its variation on the small strain shear modulus behaviour of railway formation material.

Окреслюються загальні напрями та тенденції розвитку архітектури залізничних вокзалів. The dissertation is devoted to the disclosure of the theoretical foundations of the formation of the architecture of railway stations in historical, morphological, artistic, spatio-temporal and socio-cultural aspects in the process of their emergence, development, change and transformation. Historical aspects cover the main periods of development of the architecture of railway stations in the world and in Ukraine. The architecture of the railway stations originates from the historical regularities associated with other objects. This is noticeable in the railway station buildings of large cities in comparison with palaces and large public buildings, the architecture of the railway stations of small settlements is similar to manor housing, and that of landing platforms-stops - to the buildings of other public transport. Ukrainian national motifs are expressed by the ornamentation of facades and small plastic forms of stations buildings. Recently, there has been a search for national and regional expression in new and renovated railway stations, which took place at the turn of the previous century. Morphological aspects relate to the regularities of time-related changes of forms and are generalized in the morphological types of buildings of railway stations, perrons, crossings, station sqwares. Factors, prototypes of emersion of the building and formation of this architecture are determined. The morphological changes of railway station buildings at the level of urban planning, territorial level and that of the building itself are revealed. On the urban planning level there are scenarios (emersion of the building, changes in it, dismantling); at the level of the territory and construction of the railway station there are schemes (additive, multiplicative, inversion, inclusive, mixed); at the level of the building, changes in the perimeter of the walls are possible (adaptation, superstructure, radical re-planning, finishing). Artistic aspects as compositional and stylistic techniques and means of construction of railway stations are comparable to other public buildings, perrons have a separate order, and the railway station area is connected with the architectural and urban context. Compositional and stylistic groups of railway station buildings of some railway lines and areas reflect the temporal and territorial involvement in political, economic and other factors. The ways of group distribution of railway stations in Western Ukraine are established and the uniqueness for preservation and adaptation of them in view of the historical value is asserted. From the middle of the XIX century the architecture of the railway station has been perceived as an archetype with varying sizes, planning, composition, styles, etc., influencing other public architecture. Spatial-temporal aspects of the formation of the architecture of railway stations describe the geometric and topological schemes of their construction. The concept of the mode of time is based on a philosophical understanding of the category of time. A space-time model has been created that reflects the heterogeneity of parts of architectural space in different time modes. The selectivity of time modes is related to the psychological attitude and trajectory of movement of the client-passengers in different topos of the railway station. Socio-cultural aspects are based on a complex of emotional, religious, political, commercial, linguistic, artistic, memorial, thematic and game components. The railway station has become a socio-cultural phenomenon as an architecturally formed space-shell of departure and arrival as well as related processes. It is perceived as a stable "chronotope" - an image of spatial and temporal connectivity to meet needs, first of all of connection and conveyance. This phenomenon goes beyond the physical boundaries of the railway station and becomes part of the culture. The role of railway station architecture is important in spreading of social, artistic and cultural values and interacting with other objects and processes. The main directions of development of architecture of railway stations are outlined: operating of the existing stations, construction of new stations, construction of small stations and landing platforms. These directions follow from the priorities and factors in modelling of the architecture of railway stations. The processes of origin, development, change, decline, transformation and interpretation of morphological types, compositional, stylistic techniques and means in spatio-temporal connection and socio-cultural context are combined. The main trends in the architecture of railway stations are the expression of basic ideas that reflect the evolution of railway station architecture as borrowing, choice, recomprehension, interpretation of forms. These processes tend to form a stable architectural-spatial construct in character from the "architecture of expression and demonstration" through the "architecture of reglementation" to the "architecture of choice and promotion."

The thesis attempts to provide an analysis of the role of trade union membership in the formations of trade union consciousness and worker identity and the assumption that the trade union membership is influential in the formation of worker identity is tested in this study. It is mainly based upon a field study conducted in Railcar Factory of TÜ
VASAS in Sakarya, makes a comparison between union member workers and non-union member subcontractors in terms of the formation of trade union consciousness and worker identity. It will also be possible to point out concretely that the formations of trade consciousness and worker identity are analysed through perceptions, consciousness and attitudes by taking the social, economic and political dimensions into consideration. It is analysed that the trade union membership has not a significant influence on the formation of worker identity and there are no big differences among the union member workers and subcontractors in terms of the aproaches towards trade unionism, working class consciousness and worker identity.

Streszczenie:
India will launch a high-speed rail project to improve the travel time between cities in the upcoming years. Upgrading its current speed of 180 km/h to a high speed of 360 km/h will be a turning point in railway transportation. The Vande Bharat Express is the current high-speed train that travels at a speed of 180 km/hr. India intends to start its first bullet train by 2026. But as the travel speed increases, the stresses will increase on the existing soil formation. The strains on India's railway subgrade component would significantly rise with the addition of high-speed railways and bullet trains. The strains may cause failure in more brittle soil. For thousands of years, soils are mixed with different fibers, fabrics, and vegetation to improve quality and stability. Geosynthetics which are polymer products are used in Civil engineering for decades. Utilizing geo-synthetics in the lengths of currently weak formations is an alternate strategy to reduce the number of stress. This paper gives a numerical analysis of the behavior of railway embankments built on sand. Finite element software was used to simulate the model. Using the finite element software PLAXIS 3D, a railway embankment's vertical deformations and stresses are calculated under a moving train load of 90 kN. The speeds of the moving train are taken as 180 km/h and 360 km/h for the modeling. Geogrid is installed as per the recommendations by RDSO (2018). The blanket layer and ballast layer are reinforced with geogrids at different depths. It was observed that on using geogrid in the different layers, the deformations and the stresses could be reduced up to certain levels. After analyzing the model, it can be concluded that Geogrids are beneficial in restricting the deformations and the stresses at particular sections but further studies are required to check the suitability of geogrids for the long run.

Streszczenie:
The monograph discusses theoretical and practical issues related to the completion of the implementation of the introduction of new forms of ownership in the formation of the railway holding JSC "Russian Railways". The organizational and economic results of the structural reform of railway transport in Russia are analyzed in comparison with the experience of modern reform of foreign railway transport. The variants of transformation of the modern cargo transportation management system in the new economic conditions are proposed. The main results of the study of modern economic and organizational conditions of cargo transportation, taking into account the specifics of working with a private car fleet, are presented. Based on a large-scale analysis of the loading dynamics of the main directions of the Russian Railways network and the resulting unevenness of operational work, new approaches are proposed for the formation of the market of freight operators of rolling stock. An economic assessment of the implementation of scenario options for the introduction of technological outsourcing is given on the example of JSC "Federal Freight Company" with the justification of a methodological approach for the formation of a consolidated fleet of wagons based on the algorithm of the cost method for calculating the throughput during the consolidation of a fleet of freight wagons. For practitioners and researchers involved in cargo transportation management, forecasting and formation of private fleets of freight cars. It will be useful for graduate students, undergraduates and students of economic faculties of railway universities when studying courses in the economics of railway transport and the cost of freight transportation.

Streszczenie:
The monograph is devoted to the generalization of the factors of railway transportation in Western Siberia and their influence on the formation of the experience of saving transportation resources in 1965-1991. The basic factors are considered such as the natural conditions and the production apparatus of the region, the development of a program-oriented approach to the development of the territory and the formation of the material base of railway transport in its space. These components are considered as historical challenges for the design of labor initiatives "from below". These initiatives are classified into three groups: speeding up the turnover of wagons, using the locomotive fleet, and saving fuel, energy, and other" variable " resources of the railway transportation process. The issues are considered taking into account the trends of fading opportunities for the Soviet model of system-wide development. It will be of interest to all those who are concerned about the history of Russia, the organization of its transport security system.

Streszczenie:
AbstractA failure analysis of a fractured rail corresponding to a railway conveyor belt (Tripper) that operated in service for two years has been carried out. A visual inspection, chemical composition analysis, metallographic analysis, hardness and microhardness measurements were carried out on the failed piece. The rail was made of 0.89% C carbon steel and presented a decarburized area on the running surface, with strong plastic deformation due to the operation and work hardened. The metallurgical root cause is associated with the presence of pro-eutectoid ferrite and non-metallic inclusions that have been severely deformed by rolling stresses, generating a weak continuous region that nucleated rolling contact fatigue cracks (RCF) and accelerated the formation of a longitudinal crack that propagated vertically (vertical split head) as a consequence of other possible material defects.

However, in recent decades, with newly emerging discussions on landscape infrastructure, a new idea for a more integrated infrastructure and urban system has started to be formulated. Railway strips, occurring as terrains where solid-void morphology of cities becomes illegible, emerge as generators in the formation of new urban green network. Within this framework, Ankara commuter line that mark outs a route approximately 37 kilometers in length in the city, is a remarkable case for a motivating discussion on railway and landscape confrontation. Penetrating the city in east-west direction, the commuter line integrated with a rural landscape –covering vegetable gardens and creeks- that was serving as a recreational field for citizens until 1950s. However, the transformative nature of the railway, encouraged the development of new urban lands, industrial areas and neighborhoods along its route, and erased the characteristic landscape along the railway. The continuous landscape integrated with green, water and railway infrastructure became fragmented covering only some splits of green and water. In this respect, this study dwells on the lost landscape of the commuter line by mapping the fragmented continuity of the railway, green and water infrastructure from 1950’s until today to show the limited, but potential interaction of these three systems in the current urban fabric.
