Streszczenie:
Purpose Recent studies regarding auditor experience generally focus on auditor overall experience in accounting, auditing, finance and related fields (Hardies et al., 2014), auditor sector and domain experience (Bedard and Biggs, 1991; Hammersley, 2006), auditor experience as CPA (Ye et al., 2014; Sonu et al., 2016) or big N experience (Chi and Huang, 2005; Gul et al., 2013; Zimmerman, 2016) or auditors’ international working experience (Chen et al., 2017). But there is little attention paid to where auditors obtained their experience from? And how do auditors with government experience affect audit quality (AQ)? This paper aims to present the effect of auditors with government experience on AQ. Design/methodology/approach The authors used Turkish publicly traded firms in Borsa Istanbul between the year 2008 and 2015 to test the hypothesis. The sample comprises 1,067 observations and eight years. Two main proxies of government experience are used in this paper. The first proxy is auditor’s government experience in the past. The second proxy is the continuous variable which is “the logarithmic value of the number of years of government experience”. Further, auditor overall experience in auditing, accounting, finance and other related fields are also used as a control variable. Audit reporting aggressiveness, audit reporting lag and discretionary accruals are used as proxies of AQ. Besides this, the authors adopted the model to estimate the probability of selecting a government-experienced auditor, and they presented the regression results with the addition of inverse Mills ratio. Findings The main findings are consistent with conjecture. Government-experienced auditors do not enhance AQ. They are aggressive, and they complete audit work slowly and they cannot detect discretionary accruals effectively. Spending more time in a government agency makes them more aggressive and slow, and they do not detect earnings management practices. The Heckman estimation results regarding the variable of interest are also consistent with the main estimation results. In addition, the authors found in predicting government-experienced auditor choice that family firms, domestic firms and firms that reported losses (larger firms, older firms) are more (less) likely to choose government-experienced auditors. Research limitations/implications This study has some limitations. The authors used a small sample to test the impact of government-experienced auditors on AQ because of data access problems. Much data used in this study were collected manually. Earnings quality was calculated using only discretionary accruals. Real activities manipulation was not used as the proxy of AQ in this paper. The findings from emerging markets might not generalize to the developed countries because the Turkish audit market is developing compared to Continental Europe or USA. Practical implications The findings are considered for independent audit firms. Audit firms may employ new graduates and train them to offer more qualified audit work for their clients. The results do not mean that government-experienced auditors should not work in an audit firm, or that they should not establish an audit firm. It is clear that government-experienced auditors provide low AQ in terms of audit reporting aggressiveness, audit report lag and discretionary accruals. But as they operate more in the independent audit sector, they will become successful and provide qualified audit work. One other thing we can say is that it is perhaps better for government-experienced auditors to work in the tax department of independent audit firms. Originality/value This paper tries to fill the gap in the literature regarding the effect of auditor experience on AQ and concentrates on a different type of experience: Auditors with government experience.

The most effective career education is based not on the passive reception of static knowledge, but on the dynamic interaction between thought and experience. The nature and quality of the education derived from experience are heavily dependent on the ways in which they are integrated into students’ formation. Miller (1991) suggests education’s model that presents five-stage cycle comprising preparation, briefing, activity, debriefing and follow-up. Work experience-based career education can reduce the deficits of students’ formation by expending its range of experience in a planned way. Direct experience involves the student in active interaction with the educational environment: the student penetrates the sensory complexities of the environment; the environment penetrates the internal psychological processes of the individual.

The study was conducted aimed at examining the effect of accountability, work experience, and professionalism on the quality of auditor performance. auditors are required to have a high level of accountability because the auditor will present financial statements that must be accountable by himself. In addition to having a high accountability the auditor should also have good work experience so that the auditor can convey a logical and logical understanding of the errors contained in the financial statements. And auditors also require high professionalism so that auditors can carry out professional and good tasks. The object of research is the auditor who is working at the North Sumatra BPKP Office. The data is 70 respondents. The sampling method is the saturated sample technique. Analyze the data using validity, reliability and linear regression tests. And the results of the study prove that accountability has an influence on the quality of the work of the auditor, while work experience and professionalism do not have an influence on the quality of the work of the audiores.

Abstract. Research on high-quality relationships (HQR) between coworkers has garnered considerable interest, yet the original HQR measure ( Carmeli, 2009 ) has been adapted in disparate ways (e.g., including vs. omitting the vitality subscale). Continued application is further complicated by incomplete reporting on the measure’s factor structure. Relatedly, findings that women often experience relationships differently than men highlight the need to test whether the HQR measure functions similarly across genders. We surveyed 401 employees (50% women) to test four competing models and examine invariance across genders. Findings revealed that HQR is best conceptualized as six distinct but correlated constructs. Further, full scalar invariance was observed across genders, indicating that the measure functioned equivalently and can be used in gender comparisons involving HQR constructs.

Streszczenie:
Contemporary quality issues in product design are moving from materialistic to emotional user fulfillment; comprehensive research is needed to examine quality product feelings. This research is directed toward a deeper understanding of user and customer quality feelings for different product types, including services. The quality feelings concept includes dimensions of product quality, especially functionality, ergonomics and aesthetics. The first objective of this thesis is to identify, prioritize and synthesize quality feelings into product attributes in product development applications. The second objective is to explore, test and propose methodological approaches for designing quality feelings into products. Several methods from psychology, ergonomics, statistics and probabilistic methods and heuristics were applied to achieve the objectives. From a methodological viewpoint, Likert scales, free elicitation technique and Just About Right scales were applied for data collection. Multiple Regression, Factor Analysis, Correspondence Analysis, Genetic algorithms, Partial Least Squares (PLS) and Rough Sets (RS) were applied for data analyses. For ergonomic product evaluations, direct observations, 3D workload simulations, time and frequency analyses were conducted. Five product applications are included in this thesis: operator driver cabin design of reach trucks, steering wheel design trigger switch design in right-angled nutrunners, bed-making systemsproducts and waiting room environments. Heuristic methods were found effective when there is a high number of product attributes that interact to provide quality feelings. RS results are consistent with PLS attribute predictions. When the number of product attributes is large in comparison to the number of observations, PLS extracts informative results for quality feelings. The RS method is effective in identifying interactions among design attributes. Quality feelings are associated with both tangible (tactile characteristics) and intangible (quick and easy to use) product characteristics. Words such as safety, functionality, ergonomics, comfort, reliability, supportiveness, usability, feedback, pleasantness, attractiveness, durability and distinctiveness describe quality feelings from tangible products and services. Based on product type, the quality dimensions represented by these words possess different interactions and dependencies. In work environments, products act as prostheses between workers for social interaction, which need to be considered as important quality feelings dimensions.

This study explored the experience of shame in nursing using an interpretive phenomenological approach as described by van Manen (1997). Shame is a concept that has been extensively theorised within the social sciences as important in the development of individual identity, self esteem and role performance but overlooked in nursing. The purpose of this research was twofold; to gain an understanding of how shame influences and shapes nursing identity and to produce knowledge and stimulate dialogue about what that means for nursing culture. Participants were asked to discuss significant interactions with colleagues. Significantly, all disclosed the experience of shame. Further, four major themes emerged from this study to deepen understanding of what appears to be a cultural experience. The experience of shame involves: self appraisal, professional identity in conflict, the experience of isolation and recrimination. Within each theme a number of sub themes were identified including feeling dumb, being incompetent, withdrawing and going quiet and seeking revenge. The study concluded that in relation to nursing, internalised shame is not readily recognised although negative emotions that are linked to it are clearly felt. When these emotions are left unprocessed or unidentified as shame, then they are likely to have negative consequences. But recognising this hidden shame and bringing it to conscious awareness can express and perhaps relieve shame. Further, shame's adaptive functions, to provide moral direction and teach respect, could be acknowledged or reclaimed. It is argued therefore that acknowledging and discussing shame openly in nursing, such as through future research, scholarships and education, will facilitate consciousness raising and the potential for cultural change.

Streszczenie:
Mindfulness is a quality of consciousness that consists of purposeful attention to and awareness of the present moment, approached with an attitude of openness, acceptance, and nonjudgment. Research evidence shows that mindfulness has positive effects on mental health and psychological well-being, physical health, and quality of intimate relationships. However, few researchers have studied the effects of mindfulness in a work setting. In this project, I expanded previous research by exploring how mindfulness, as developed in a mindfulness-based training program, affects the workplace outcomes of performance and citizenship behavior. I proposed that these effects are mediated through the positive effects of mindfulness on one's experienced affect and one's work relationships. I also examined interdependence as a moderator of the relationship quality-work outcomes relationship. The research study employed an experimental group of participants in a mindfulness-based program and a nonequivalent control group to test the specific hypotheses. Data were provided by multiple sources: mindfulness, affect, and role interdependence by study participants; relationship quality by coworkers; performance and citizenship behavior by supervisors. Analytic strategy was comprised of correlational analysis and regression as well as analytical procedures for moderated mediation. The mindfulness-based programs were effective in increasing mindfulness, particularly for those participants who were lower in mindfulness prior to program participation. Participants also experienced improved affect. However, the proposed model relating mindfulness to work outcomes was not supported. Mindfulness was significantly related to positive and negative affect as predicted; however, mindfulness was not significantly correlated with relationship quality or job performance. Its significant relationship with citizenship behavior was in the opposite direction as hypothesized. In the full model, coefficients for mindfulness, experienced affect, relationship quality, and role interdependence in the prediction of job performance and citizenship behavior were not significant. Additionally, interdependence did not interact with relationship quality to predict work outcomes. Implications of the study for mindfulness-based programs in work settings and for future research are discussed.

Streszczenie:
Achieving product and process quality are among the central themes of software engineering, and quality is an important factor in the marketplace. Usability and user experience (UX) are two important aspects of quality, particularly for interactive products. To achieve usability means producing products that let users do things in a satisfactory, efficient and effective way. To develop products with good UX, means going beyond usability, in ways that are still not clear to us. Achieving good usability and UX is hard. This thesis is concerned with organizations which work towards these goals. This research is concerned with understanding and improving the processes by which technology is designed and developed, and understanding the demands and expectations users have. It is about how companies can and actually develop products with good usability and UX, and what stops them from working towards this as efficiently as they could. We have viewed the usability and UX challenge from the viewpoints of Quality, Organizations, and Institutions, with a focus on participatory design, user-centred design and wicked problems. The research can be characterised as empirical research performed over a period of seven years, in close cooperation with industrial partners. The research was performed using multiple data collection methods to create constructs and shape theory. The field methods have ranged from being a participant observer, to performing interviews and holding workshops with members of the participating organisations. A case study approach was initially used, but focus soon moved from case study methodology to a closer focus on grounded theory, and finally the focus shifted to constructivist grounded theory. The thesis contributes to the field of software engineering in several ways. Usability has a long history within software engineering, human computer interaction, and design science, but the different discourses within the fields have meant that communication between the fields was problematic. The research in this thesis has moved between the different fields, contributing to bridging the gap between the areas. It gives an illustration of how usability work actually takes place in different types of companies, from a developer of operating systems for smartphones, to a global engineering company, which knows that it must find ways of working with, and measuring, usability and user experience. It gives concrete knowledge about the way in which companies can work with usability testing, and how they can provide information to satisfy the information needs of different stakeholders. It provides a discussion of the state of UX today, taking up the problems that stop industry making use of the definitions and theories of UX that exist. Thus, it gives an illustration of the different factors in product design, development and sales, from dealing with organizational factors to satisfying user needs, that all make usability work such a rocky road to navigate.

Offering memorable experiences to customers is an effective marketing strategy in hospitality and tourism. However, the effects of memorable experiences have remained largely unexamined. Two research models were proposed through a literature review to present the antecedents that effectively lead to memorizing travel experiences. Since researchers in customer service management have recently claimed the significance of creating good memories related to consumption experiences, this study developed the discussion on links among the antecedents and memory and hypothesized the sequential relationships among the constructs. Study 1 examined the relationships between antecedents (experience quality, hedonic value, utilitarian value, and satisfaction) and post-experience memory in cruise tourism. Using an online survey, 375 vacationers who traveled on an ocean cruise ship were recruited. Structure Equation Modeling showed that the experience quality of cruise travel consisting of seven experience dimensions had a positive influence on helping memory formation through hedonic value and utilitarian value. The results underscored the critical effect of memory on word-of-mouth. This study documented that hedonic value driven by travel experience quality had a more important role in delivering the effect to memory than utilitarian value. However, in the research model of study 1, satisfaction was not connected to memory. Mediation effect analysis individually tested the partial mediating role of memory in the relationship between hedonic value/utilitarian value/satisfaction and word-of-mouth. Study 2 examined the effects of emotions on memory, particularly the potential moderating effect of arousal on the relationship between valence and memory. This study not only proposed the direct influence of arousal and valence on memory, but also hypothesized the quasi-moderating effect of arousal in amplifying the influence of valence on increasing memory. The results of hierarchical regression analysis using the dataset of 375 samples presented the direct relationships between arousal/valence and memory were shown although the hypothesis regarding the moderating role of arousal was rejected. Two emotional dimensions (arousal and valence) were found to be significant predictors of increased memory quality, but the moderating effect of arousal was not supported. Based on the findings of this study, practical implications for the tourism industry are provided, along with future research ideas.

Studies show that good planning reduces operating coasts and costs for change and additional work. It means that thoughtful planning becomes a more important factor in reducing waste costs and achieving efficient production and good quality. A tool to achieve this is work preparation. Work preparation is a concept that, through planning, facilitates the performance of an activity. To achieve the desired result and quality, the choice of the performance method, workforce, materials, machines and other tools must be decided in good time before the work begins. The purpose of this graduate project is to make a status analysis of how Peab's work preparations are used in production. Identify errors or deficiencies and to investigate the possibility of streamlining. The objective is to get the work preparation more efficient and to suggest improvements. The study has been made in cooperation with Peab Region middle and the current building projects in Karlstad in spring 2017. It comprises a case study (on/at Talldungen preschool) and an interview study where site managers, supervisors and construction workers have been interviewed. The result shows that Peab has a structured work preparation and that the employees find the toolset useful. Working preparation clarifies requirements and any questions can be resolved before the start of the activity. During the preparation, the construction workers actively participate and can influence the choice of working methods, machines and tools. This results in a positive attitude and is perceived to provide better teamwork. One reoccurring problem is that time for work preparation is not prioritized, which means that the follow-up after a completed activity becomes insufficient and the documentation is often missing. Based on the conclusions drawn from the analysis, education, a bank of experience and also a drawing and instructional station are recommended as arrangements. Peab should be better at informing the employees about the available tools and should also be investing in developing the use of BIM.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was to enter the world of the parents living with a child with autism, wondering what quality of life means for them and whether their engagement with social work services makes any difference to their quality of lives. Understanding the quality of life experiences of the parents of children with autism is relevant for policy making and social work practice. Based in a Scottish context, the objectives for this research were as follows: To explore the parent carers' description of the term quality of life To describe the parent carers' views on their quality of life in the context of the services provided by social services within (departments of) local authorities. To understand the systems, processes and procedures put in place by the local authorities to support parent carers To explore the scope for changes, if any, in the present social work approach in order to enhance the quality of life of parent carers. The study adopted a grounded theory methodology informed by a symbolic interactionist theoretical framework. Data were gathered from three study local authorities in Scotland. The participants include an almost equal number of male and female parents (total parent participants = 23); and social workers and operational managers from three study local authorities (total number of social workers =12, total number of operational managers =3). This study utilised focus groups and semi structured interviews to gather data. Using the constant comparison method, three main categories emerged; namely 'new normal', 'on-going burden' and 'limited help' which contextualised the quality of life experiences of parent participants in the study. Oppression emerged as the overarching theory. Drawing on the parental perspectives on quality of life distilled in this study, the implications for further research, professional practice and education are explored.

Streszczenie:
AbstractBased on methodological considerations with regard to the challenges which arise with the analysis of the potentials of nature experience, a case study is examined: the excursion of a teacher with her second grade class to an industrial wasteland. The aim is to learn about plants there. The case study shows that the teacher basically has a positive attitude towards research, has a good perception of the children’s learning processes and is very clearly aware of the educational value of emotional, social and aesthetic experiences. In addition, she succeeds in responding to the needs of the children and the external circumstances in a spontaneous and appropriate, context-dependent manner. Interestingly, however, she ‘hides’ behind ‘common’ constructs (e.g. the ‘increase in knowledge’) in her argumentation regarding the format of nature experience. The most plausible assumption and thus hypothesis is that the teacher doubts the acceptance or the significance of her conception of learning. Finally, I present the arguments for the potentials of nature experiences for personal development. In addition, I show how important it is that the schools promote real-life encounters with natural phenomena. This enables authentic personal development and counteracts forces currently at work that lead to a decline in real-life experiences in nature.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThe National Forest in the English Midlands has developed a model based on a five-point outdoor learning plan, to enable every schoolchild within the Forest area to regularly experience outdoor-based learning within their school curriculum. The Forest began in the early 1990s, with the aim of transforming a post-industrial landscape and its communities through the planting of trees. Extending over 200 square miles and with a population of around 200,000, the National Forest’s project ‘Creating a Forest for Learning’ has developed from three decades of environmental education work with rural, urban and nearby inner city schools. The project funds staff training and grounds work, to make it easier to embed the practice in the school improvement plan. The chapter discusses the drive behind developing the project, to embed a love for and understanding of trees and woodlands in the generation of children growing up in a young forest, and to realise one of the original ambitions in creating a forest near where people live and work: to transform lives as well as the landscape, and to offer children a range of high-quality learning experiences, where 21st-century skills such as resilience, communication and adaptability come to the fore. By improving their connection to nature, the young people are building resources for their own health and wellbeing. This can only help them become active citizens as society moves to a green recovery from Covid-19, and equip them to take a positive standpoint in addressing the climate crisis. The chapter presents the progress, obstacles and successes experienced by this unique project, where education underpins aspirations to embed sustainable living.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Research on user experience (UX) has attracted much attention from designers. Additionally, hedonic quality can help designers understand user interaction (such as attractive, original and innovative) when they experience a product. Realising the user’s interaction state is a significant step for designers to optimise product design and service. Previous UX modelling lacks exploration in user interaction state. Also, the lack of user interaction state factor will reduce the accuracy of the UX modelling. In this paper, we explore the interaction value of online customer review and introduce a new approach to integrating hedonic quality for UX modelling. Firstly, extracting word list from online customer review; Secondly, hedonic quality words are extracted from the word list and added as a hedonic quality part to UX modelling; Thirdly, we compared the analysis result with our previous study for the conclusion. This research combines hedonic quality with UX modelling to enrich modelling in the field of UX for the first time. The proposed data collection method is superior to the traditional collection methods in hedonic quality studies. Extracting hedonic quality factors from online customer reviews can in-depth provide reflections for designers to improve their product design. Furthermore, it also explored the valuable relationship between UX and online customer reviews to provide proactive thinking in user strategy and design activities.

A recent report has identified several challenges and barriers from the employer perspective that can limit their ability to engage with work-placement (Jackson, Rowbottom, Ferns, & McLarend, 2017). These include a lack of shared understanding between the University and Industry of what is involved in work-placement; misalignment between employer and university expectations on the purpose and nature of the placement experience, especially what constitutes a quality placement and how this can be achieved; and ability to locate a suitable student. Additionally, not being approached by Universities and/or access to relevant University staff who arrange work-placements can be problematic. For unstructured work-placements, identifying suitable projects for students to undertake was found to be a considerable challenge. Recommendations to the University to reduce such barriers centre around developing collaborative relationships. In Ireland, specific guidelines to facilitate quality work-placement have been compiled in the ‘Roadmap for Academic-Employment Partnerships (REAP) Work-placement in Third Level-Programmes’ report (Sheridan & Linehan, 2011), and focus mainly on communications, learning agreements, mentoring practices, student selection processes, reflection on practice, and assessment and feedback mechanisms. This paper will set out how the recommendations of the REAP report for work-placement were realised in TU Dublin Food related programmes, and the important role that technology played in this process.

Streszczenie:
In Italy, Law no. 107/2015 made obligatory for all second grade secondary school students to spend a certain number of hours on alternanza scuola-lavoro activities (work-based learning). For Italian schools this opened up new horizons as well as new challenges on multiple levels: organisational, didactic and educational. Anyway Legal provisions and scientific evidence are in fact not sufficient to guarantee quality because school and work contexts are systems guided by different motivations, models and mechanisms. “Tailoring” and “co-designing” are the main characteristics of alternanza programmes offered by Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore; to investigate the quality of these experiences a survey has been launched. Whilst the study confirms the satisfaction of the participating schools, from the perspective of ongoing improvement, a number of areas for development emerged in relation to evaluation issue in particular. Beyond the experience itself, universities should consider alternanza a major topic for consideration, since it enhances their fundamental activities: research, education and the third mission; accommodating students on alternanza programmes is therefore a means of responding to local needs but also an opportunity to consolidate university development strategies.

Streszczenie:
This report describes the experiences of over 600 undergraduates who were taking STEM courses with in-person class meetings that had to shift to remote instruction in spring 2020 because of COVID-19. Internet connectivity issues were serious enough to interfere with students’ ability to attend or participate in their STEM course at least occasionally for 46% of students, with 15% of students experiencing such problems often or very often. A large majority of survey respondents reported some difficulty with staying motivated to work on their STEM courses after they moved online, with 45% characterizing motivation as a major problem. A majority of STEM students also reported having problems knowing where to get help with the course content after it went online, finding a quiet place to work on the course, and fitting the course in with other family or home responsibilities. Overall, students who reported experiencing a greater number of major challenges with continuing their course after it went online expressed lower levels of satisfaction with their course after COVID-19. An exception to this general pattern, though, was found for students from minoritized race/ethnicity groups, females, and lower-income students. Despite experiencing more challenges than other students did with respect to continuing their STEM courses remotely, these students were more likely to rate the quality of their experiences when their STEM course was online as just as good as, or even better than, when the course was meeting in person.

In this work, the immediate and long-term results of denervation of intervertebral joints in 30 patients with pain syndrome in the lumbar spine were studied. The catamnesis was collected from 18 patients in terms from 1.7 months to 18 months after surgery. Pain syndrome on a visually analog scale after surgery decreased by an average of 20-30 mm. Subclinically expressed anxiety/depression persists in all patients with a “good” result of treatment, the assessment was carried out using the hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). According to the Nurick scale, treatment results were assessed at level 2 (improvement) in 93.3% of cases (n=28), level 3 (unchanged condition) - 6.7% of cases (n=2). According to the results of the study, denervation of the intervertebral joints is an effective minimally invasive method of treating facet syndrome. It allows in the early and long-term postoperative periods to significantly reduce the pain syndrome and improve the quality of life of patients. The authors also admit that the pain syndrome in the back is polyethological, which requires careful selection of patients for this type of procedure.

Swift changes in society, related to sciences technicians’ development, technologies, by the increase of general volume of information, pull out new requirements for maintenance, structure, and quality of education. It requires teachers to diversify a tool in the direction of the increase in possibilities of the use of mobile technologies and computer systems. Lately in the world, more attention spared to the use of mobile learning, which in obedience to «Recommendations of UNESCO on the questions of a policy in the area of mobile learning» foresees the use of mobile technology, both separate and together with other by informational computer technologies. [1]. Mobile learning allows using the open informational systems, global educational networks, unique digital resources which belong to different educational establishments and co-operate with each other. The use of existent educational resources and creation of own, based on the academic resources from informative space, allows to promote the interest of students to the study of physics, to take into account the individual features, and also features of region and framework of society of the country. During the last years in Ukraine competency-based approach to the organization of studies certainly one of basic. The new Education Act addresses the key competencies that every modern person needs for a successful life, including mathematical competence; competence in natural sciences, engineering, and technology; innovation; information and communication competence [2]. This further emphasizes the importance of providing students with quality physical education and the problems associated with it. Using mobile technology in professional teaching work, the teacher has the opportunity to implement the basic principles of the competence approach in teaching physics. An analysis of the data provided in the official reports of the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment showed that the number of students making an external independent assessment in physics and choosing a future profession related to physics has decreased significantly. This is due to the loss of students' interest in physics and the complexity of the content of the subject, as well as the increase in the amount of information that students need to absorb. In this article, we explore the possibilities of mobile technology as a means of teaching physics students and give our own experience of using mobile technology in the process of teaching physics (for example, the optics section in primary school).

Streszczenie:
Job quality, a well-known topic in workforce development circles, is an underutilized but useful lens with which to examine labor market conditions. The Aspen Institute (2020), a long-time advocate for job quality, defines it as “a range of attributes that drive worker experiences: wages, benefits, scheduling, legal rights, equity and inclusion, opportunity to build skills and advance, supportive work environment, and worker voice.” Given the record number of resignations and available job openings, especially in the lower-paid industry sectors, along with popular labor market narratives around the Great R’s (Resignation, Renegotiation, Reshuffle), I wonder to what extent job quality plays a role in the occupational mobility of workers. Occupational mobility includes all potential outcomes an individual has when holding a job. For instance, in addition to the option of changing to another occupation, an individual can remain in that occupation, become unemployed, or leave the labor force. Occupational mobility metrics are an appealing way to explore labor market conditions because they provide a dynamic perspective, while traditional metrics such as unemployment and labor force participation rates tend to be static observations.

This document offers a synthesis of insights from recent research and design activities conducted by ideas42 through Breakthrough RESEARCH, Breakthrough ACTION, and other projects across nine different low- and middle-income settings about the behavioral roots of challenges health care providers face in providing high quality services. We discuss how the physical and social environment in which they work and live sends signals to providers about what is important, how they can navigate difficulties, and how well they are performing. We discuss how experiences outside the health facility impact how providers approach their professional duties. We also discuss how pervasive time and resource constraints create a cognitive and emotional burden that gets in the way of what they can do, even within these constraints. For each challenge, we also share lessons emerging from this research about about how global health practitioners can address these challenges through program design and implementation.

Incontinence is the medical term used to describe the involuntary loss of urine or faeces. Women, men, girls, boys and people of all genders, at any age, can experience incontinence. A person with incontinence can experience leakage occasionally, regularly or constantly; and leakage can happen at any time, day or night. A person may also experience leakage of urinary or faecal matter due to not being able to get to the toilet in time or not wanting to use the toilet facilities available. This is known as social, or functional, incontinence. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) understanding of incontinence is still in its early stages: the term ‘incontinence’ may not be known, knowledge of the condition is rare, and the provision of support is lacking. Those who experience incontinence may face stigma due to having the condition, and this may affect their willingness or confidence to talk about it. There is a need to better understand incontinence in LMICs, and how best to support people living with the condition to improve their quality of life. This requires having conversations with individuals that experience the condition, and with individuals who care for those who do: they will have the lived experiences of what it means to live with incontinence practically, emotionally and socially for them and their families. Living with incontinence can have a range of impacts on the people living with it and their carers. These include increased stress and distress; additional needs for water and soap; and restricted ability to join in community activities, school or work. Living with incontinence can also lead to a range of protection issues. The potential challenges that people face may be quite diverse and may vary between people and households. The checklist below, and corresponding page references to ‘Incontinence: We Need to Talk About Leaks’ can be used to increase your understanding of incontinence and the options available to support people living with the condition; and provide guidance on how to have conversations to understand how best to support people living with incontinence in your area.
