Streszczenie:
The prospect of manned space missions outside Earth's orbit is limited by the travel time and shielding against cosmic radiation. The chemical rockets currently used in the space program have no hope of propelling a manned vehicle to a far away location such as Mars due to the enormous mass of fuel that would be required. The specific energy available from nuclear fuel is a factor of 106 higher than chemical fuel; it is therefore obvious that nuclear power production in space is a must. On the other hand, recent considerations to send a man to the Moon for a long stay would require a stable, secured and safe source of energy (there is hardly anything beyond nuclear power that would provide a useful and reliably safe sustainable supply of energy). National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) anticipates that the mass of a shielding material required for long travel to Mars is the next major design driver. In 2006 NASA identified a need to assess and evaluate potential gaps in existing knowledge and understanding of the level and types of radiation critical to astronauts' health during the long travel to Mars and to start a comprehensive study related to the shielding design of a spacecraft finding the conditions for the mitigation of radiation components contributing to the doses beyond accepted limits. In order to reduce the overall space craft mass, NASA is looking for the novel, multi-purpose and multi-functional materials that will provide effective shielding of the crew and electronics on board. The Laboratory for Neutronics and Geometry Computation in the School of Nuclear Engineering at Purdue University led by Prof. Tatjana Jevremovic began in 2004 the analytical evaluations of different lightweight materials. The preliminary results of the design survey study are presented in this paper.

Ethnicity, age, and the feeling of belonging for students can affect their performance in class. A noninteractive or unmingled student who lacks the feeling of belonging to other classmates or a group of students has high potential to perform poorly, especially in classes where teamwork is required and highly desirable. This article surveyed the ethnicity and demographics of 194 students in a fluid power class offered within the School of Engineering Technology at Purdue University. The survey collected the gender, age, and ethnicity of students enrolled in the class at the main campus and at five other remote locations spread over the state of Indiana that are part of Purdue University. All surveyed locations shared the same labs and course learning outcomes. The final scores for the students with different ethnicities, demographics, and ages were analyzed showing the average, minimum, and maximum in each location. The group grades, ethnicity, gender, and age were summarized and sorted into three categories: students enrolled in the main campus, students enrolled at statewide locations while being aggregated in one pool, and students from statewide locations but each location was presented separately. Although “White” students were the dominant group for all considered campuses, statistical analysis of the students’ grades showed that the locations that had slightly more diverse groups had the highest average scores. It was also noticed that the scores and performance of the students depended mainly on their interaction and willingness to mingle with other students. Other factors that can affect the students’ performance such as family background, family obligations and support, school-related factors, and other social factors were not part of this study.

The ultimate objective of teacher professional development (TPD) is to deliver a positive impact on students’ engagement and performance in class through teacher practice via improving their content and pedagogical content knowledge and changing their attitudes toward the subject being taught. However, compared to other content areas, such as mathematics and science, relatively few engineering TPD programs have been developed, and there has been a lack of research on the effective practice of TPD for K-12 engineering education. As a part of a five-year longitudinal project, this study reports the first-year effect of TPD offered by the Institute for P-12 Engineering Research and Learning (INSPIRE) at Purdue University on elementary teachers integrating engineering. Thirty-two teachers of second through fourth grade from seven schools attended a one-week intensive Summer Academy and integrated engineering lessons throughout the year. Based on a pre- and post-test research design, multiple measures were utilized to examine changes in teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of engineering and their variations in knowledge and perceptions by school and teacher characteristics. Overall, teachers were satisfied with the engineering TPD program, significantly increased their engineering design process knowledge, and became more familiar with engineering. While teachers’ knowledge about engineering did not vary by school and teacher characteristics, some aspects of teachers’ perceptions regarding engineering integration and their practice differed by school and teacher characteristics.

The Water Supply in Developing Countries (WSDC) service-learning course at Purdue University has fostered a strong partnership with the La Vega region in the Dominican Republic since 2012. During this time, an interdisciplinary group of engineering and science students has helped design drinking water treatment systems and the group has developed water, sanitation, and health (WASH) education materials. These WASH education and water safety approaches often have been conducted in person in the past. However, with the state of the COVID-19 pandemic and the inability to travel in the fall and spring semesters of the 2020–2021 academic year, the students have been exploring (1) the impact of the pandemic on the community schools in the La Vega province, (2) the impact of the pandemic on the current water treatment systems, and (3) possible solutions to implement a “virtual installation” of a water treatment system at our newest partner school in the community of Desecho. The coronavirus pandemic has ushered in a new way that we may approach our service-learning experiences in the future. More specifically, in the future, it may be more effective to serve as a “virtual consulting firm” of engineers and consultants, rather than builders, for the implementation and design of the water treatment systems. In this way, we may facilitate a partnership that fosters community agency and solution-based approaches to technical issues are led by local community members.

Streszczenie:
With the recent push towards high injection rate blast furnace operation for economic and environmental reasons, it has become desirable in North America to better understand the impacts of alternate injected gas fuels in comparison to the well-documented limitations of natural gas. The quenching effects of gas injection on the furnace present a functional limit on the maximum stable injection rate which can be utilized. With this in mind, researchers at Purdue University Northwest’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation utilized previously developed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the blast furnace to explore the impacts of replacing natural gas with syngas in a blast furnace with a single auxiliary fuel supply. Simulations predicted that the syngas injection can indeed reduce coke consumption in the blast furnace at similar injection rates to natural gas while maintaining stable raceway flame and reducing gas temperatures. The coke rates predicted by modeling using similar injection rates indicated an improvement of 8 to 15 kg/thm compared to baseline conditions when using the syngas of various feedstocks. Additionally, syngas injection scenarios typically produced higher raceway flame temperatures than comparable natural gas injection cases, indicating potential headroom for reducing oxygen enrichment in the hot blast or providing an even higher total injection rate.

The research mapped chemistry-oriented university freshman students’ ability to solve chemical calculations. Their success was monitored based on several factors such as their faculty, field of studies, the type of calculation and the assignment type (word problem vs. formula). The results indicate a significant need to change the approach to teaching chemical calculations - the students were rather unsuccessful in the tasks. The obstacles they face include the ability to identify a problem, understand the concepts of calculation and appropriately adjust the correct use of the mathematical apparatus. These findings represent an impulse for teaching in upper-secondary school as well as to introductory university courses.

In Bangladesh, the scenario of sexual harassment is a great problem in the academic sector as well as the prevalence is equally the same. Female students are the prominent victims of sexual harassment incidents in the educational environment. The main objectives of the study were to evaluate the nature of sexual harassment in academia as well as the impacts on female students and the consequences of the problem. The study was conducted in a qualitative research method and collected primary data with the help of a checklist of the undergraduate students of the Social Science School of Khulna University. Eight respondents and two key informants were selected purposively for the study that fulfilled the criteria of the unit of analysis. The findings of the study disclosed that females are frequent victims of gender-based sexual harassment in the academic sector. Female students constantly face verbal and non-verbal sexual harassment as well as the majority of the respondents don’t disclose or report the incidents to the authority because they cannot rely on perpetrators who will not get proper punishment for their crimes. For this, the victims suffer from various impacts on their mental and physical well-being. As a result, female students replace their career focus, skipping their educational journey and constantly feeling insecure. This research also revealed that society and culture greatly impact sexual harassment occurrences by men. The overall study found the negative impacts of sexual harassment, its consequences along with possible solutions.

Electric-field nanobubbles: Re-engineering water treatment Niall J. English, from the University College Dublin, School of Chemical and Bioprocess Engineering, discusses electric-field generated nanobubbles, including re-engineering water treatment – and beyond. A major and fundamental challenge is limited solubility in many liquids, e.g., gases, such as oxygen, and especially hydrogen, in water. In ecosystems and the environment, lack of dissolved oxygen (DO) is a significant reason for fish kills and water bodies being blighted by algal blooms, in addition to sometimes lack of effectiveness concerning activated-sludge processes in water treatment or poorer-than-hoped results in irrigation.

Abstract This article compares the controversial mascot of the University of Mississippi, Colonel Reb, with the University of Kansas Jayhawk and the University of Missouri Tiger, all three of which owe their origins to the Civil War. Using yearbooks, school newspapers, and other university publications, this piece examines the contexts in which the mascots were adopted, as well as the imagery surrounding their usage. The goal is to determine why Colonel Reb has become so controversial while the Jayhawk and the Tiger remain acceptable university symbols, despite the fact that both mascots were created from the guerrilla violence that occurred in Kansas and Missouri during the Civil War. Comparing the three mascots illustrates that while white supremacy has been deemed by most Americans to be part of an unacceptable past, the violence associated with guerrilla conflict has become a suitable form of entertainment for college sports fans.

The initiative to create an interdisciplinary program to train PhD (and in parallel terminal ME) graduate students in electrochemistry have been in circulation at University of California Irvine (UCI) since the Fall of 2018. Several “grass-root” meetings of faculty with sustained professional interests in the general interdisciplinary area of electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering involving faculty from UCI School of Physical Sciences (Chemistry and Physics & Astronomy) and Henry Samueli School of Engineering (Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering) have taken place and lead to an internal formal proposal to create the program. This process was additionally catalyzed by the transformation of UCI Advanced Power & Energy Program into UCI Clean Energy Institute, to include National Fuel Cell Research Center and Horiba Institute for Mobility & Connectivity. This initiative was indeed halted for practically three years by the COVID pandemics and is being revisited just now in the Fall of 2022. The campus wide initiative Electrochemical Science & Engineering aims to support building a strong academic discipline to serve as a science and engineering backbone for decarbonization of technology and economy. The general research areas are (listed below) are being supported by a series of graduate classes: Electrochemistry & Electroanalytical Methods (Chemistry); Electrochemical Thermodynamics & ElectrochemicalSystems (MAE); Kinetics of Electrochemical Processes (CBE); Electrochemical Engineering (CBE); Electrochemical Energy Conversion & Storage (CBE) and Solid-State Electrochemistry (MSE) – all of which have been taught in a given, pre-arranged sequence as electives in correspondent departments with an substantially overlapping student audience during 2020/21 and 2021/2022 Academic Years. New technical electives in the areas of Bioelectrochemistry & Bioenergetics, Electrochemical Sensors & Biosensors and Electrochemical Water Treatment Technologies are being prepared for the 2022/223 Academic Year by newly recruited faculty. The lineup of the curriculum and the segmentation of it into specializations will be discussed. We will also address the creation of professional (termina) Master in Engineering (ME) graduate program. Research themes that will be covered by the program are practiced by some 17 faculty at UC: Electrochemical energy technologies, such as fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, electrolyzes, and batteries, use chemical change to produce electricity, or vice versa, and consist of catalytic electrodes and ion-conducting electrolytes. Ion transport between the electrolytes is often limited due to intrinsic properties of (often polymeric) ion-exchange membranes, or low-temperature conductivity of solid-state ionic materials. The next frontier in the science and technology of electrochemical interfacesis exploiting the unique opportunities offered by our emerging ability understand ionic and charge transfer interactions at nanoscale and to tailor both soft and solid-state materials structures to facilitate such interactions including in corrugated and confined structures. Electrocatalytic systems directly utilize electrical energy to perform redox reactions. The latter is essential to most chemical bond forming/breaking events and in energy storage and utilization reactions. Molecular electrocatalysis effort is focused on designing molecules with tailored active sites, predicted by computational chemistry, in order to achieve optimal energies in abundant metals. This further extends to bioelectrocatalysis by proteins and bioelectrochemistry of cells.

The article relates to the formation of a methodology of nonlinearity for nonlinear cognition of the spatial expansion of higher education in the innovation sphere, which manifests itself as the implementation of its innovative activities and the spread of innovations not only inside, but also outside its own national states. This trend of embedding higher education in the global innovation process has a stable and long-lasting character, due to its all-round innovatization and globalization. The article offers a rationale of the relevance and presentation of the methodology of nonlinearity as the most effective tool for understanding the expansion of the innovation space of higher education and its integration into the worldwide innovation process. The proposed methodology of nonlinear research is opposed to the so-called linear logic, a linear method often used in economics that considers objects and phenomena with predictable behavior and is not able to give a complete picture of the development of open nonequilibrium systems. The methodology of nonlinearity includes the principles of the theory of systems self-organization and the theory of evolutionary economics. It allows combining both stationary and dynamic components of the nonlinear process under study in one model, revealing the nature of changes in both spatial and temporal properties accompanying the modification of higher education integrated into the global innovation space. The study’s results are presented as the parameters of the nonlinearity of the university innovation space expansion. Theirs disclosed using a nonlinear methodology. There are: the openness of higher education to the import-export of information, energy and material flows; the state of instability, disequilibrium under the influence of external and internal factors; updating the structure through self-organization, leading to the replacement of obsolete parts of the system with new ones; the ability to make qualitative leaps, once at the bifurcation points. The article offers a rationale of the relevance and presentation of the methodology of nonlinearity as the most effective tool for understanding the expansion of the innovation space of higher education and its integration into the worldwide innovation process. Therefore, the main idea was to construct a specifically designed educational material that focusses on the benefits of viewing visualisations to enhance students’ conceptual understanding of solids and crystal structures augmented by cartoons, and evaluate its usability. The interactive ‘cartoons’ agents were developed from scratch, giving them freedom of movement and realism at the same time. A research was conducted in the School of Chemical Engineering in Greece (National Technical University of Athens), evaluated the usability of the digital material and the contribution of the 3-D visualisations and the cartoons agents in the understanding of such high-cognitive load concepts. Keywords: Cartoons, 3-D visualisations, crystal structures, chemical engineering.

Streszczenie:
Introduction: In general, university laboratories can be characterized as a polluting source, as they use several chemical substances that are potentially harmful to the environment and human health in the development of their academic activities. Therefore, proper handling of chemical products and management of waste generated are necessary for environmental safety. Objective: make a diagnosis respect to the management of hazardous waste at the Technical University of Ambato. Methods: it’s a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study, in which 41 laboratories generating hazardous waste were selected. A survey was applied based on the current technical regulations of the Ministry of the Environment of Peru, with 3 sections, and the results were analyzed in the SPSS 24.0 program. Results: at the laboratories of the university predominates the generation of infectious residues in the School of Health Sciences and construction in the School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, the number of containers is insufficient for generation demand or does not meet the needs (80.50%), sharps are segregated in rigid containers (75.60%), waste is not disposed of according its class (68.30%), central storage is far from medical and food services (61.00%), no treatment or final disposal is carried out by specialized companies (80.50%). Conclusions: the laboratories have an appropriate internal waste management, they have covered containers, the sharps are appropriately segregated, there is a correct middle storage. However, in the external management of hazardous waste, there aren’t routes or timetables for transport, no treatment or collect is carried out through an specialized company.
