Punk is a lifestyle, ethos and perspective that deals with social unrest and personal discontent. Learning models are applied as framework in this research to contemplate how punk is learned and enacted as a lifestyle by going through daily fashion merchandising and social practices, such as how punks engage with artefacts and the rules of their scene. The punk subculture uses a pedagogy to their fashion production and consumption, employing the garments of their sartorial style with community interactions to create and symbolize their ethos. The community interacts in unision as newcomers to the scene learn from established participants, take in the knowledge available to them, and shift to self-produced ideas to develop their individualized punk ethos. This study used qualitative online surveys, in-person interviews and social media discussions from self-identified punks in the United States and Canada, as well as archival visits to punk-themed collections in order to analyse the experience of individuals who produce, consume and communicate their punk ethos through their garments.

Este artigo discute narrativas de sujeitos punks oriundos de regiões periféricas do Distrito Federal. Trata-se de, sob o prisma historiográfico, investigar memórias e identidades de sujeitos punks imersos no território geográfico e simbólico das cidades-satélites nas décadas de 1980 e 1990. A partir de relatos orais de pessoas que participaram da cena punk tramada nos “extramuros” de Brasília, intenta-se perscrutar narrativas não hegemônicas acerca do punk nesses contextos. Ainda que invisibilizado no discurso da grande mídia e em outros dispositivos difusores das memórias consideradas oficiais do rock de Brasília, o punk articulado nas periferias da Capital Federal corresponde a um longevo cenário musical e comportamental underground, perpassado por múltiplas vivências, experiências e ativismo político de inspiração anarquista. This paper argues that crosstown traffic in the East and West German punk subculture was an essential aspect of how popular music helped to challenge the political legitimacy of the East German government. West German punks frequently crossed the border to attend Eastern punk concerts, meet with friends and trade stories and experiences, connections that helped to foster a transnational community of alternative youths. These interactions denied official claims that punk was the result of capitalist decadence while undermining the East German government's efforts at cultivating a distinctive socialist identity. Nor were border crossings unidirectional, as Eastern punks made daring attempts to connect with their Western cousins. Writing for West German fanzines, appearing in the Western press and even managing to release Eastern recordings smuggled westwards, Eastern punks crossed the Iron Curtain and in so doing, worked to present an alternative vision of Eastern youth to the world and join the global punk scene.

Since punk emerged in the 1970s as a music genre and subculture it has gained significant academic attention. Punk as a concept now alludes to specific places or scenes, and has been established as a general anti-establishment attitude, as well as an anti-consumerist disposition, with a need to do-it-yourself (DIY). Drawing upon ethnographic and interview data from the east coast of Australia, this article analyses struggles that occur within punk spaces where women and queer identifying punks negotiate historically established male dominance. Punk scenes have the general illusio of being resistant to dominant norms and practices, which is attractive to individuals who feel like outsiders. Yet through symbolic violence, systematic oppression can be perpetrated against those who do not invoke idealised forms of masculinity or femininity. Using the affective transference of gendered norms in punk spaces, we find struggles that are often homogenised in punk research which attends critically to subcultural themes of collectivism and resistance. By unpacking these themes, this article puts forth the concepts of reflexive complicity – where men and women reproduce inequality in punk spaces – and defiance labour – moments of overt challenge to symbolic violence within punk spaces and scenes.

Recent research shows that non-Muslims “read” Muslim and non-Muslim Others through an Islamophobic lens, whether the victims of Islamophobia are practitioners of Islam or not. Yet how Muslims and non-Muslims band together against anti-Muslim racism in nonreligious ways and venues is less understood. The author draws on a wide range of qualitative data to show how “Taqwacore” punks ( taqwa means “God consciousness” in Arabic and core comes from hardcore punk) create a racial identity as “brown kids” that is panethnic and opposed to the major racial frames used to vilify Muslims and brown-bodied Others. Taqwacore punks do this by (1) using punk rock attitudes to call out whiteness and keep it out of their punk and (2) redefining punk in favor of “brown kids.” These findings expand a new body of scholarship that shows how marginalized youth are using popular culture to create new racial identities against whiteness.

Abstract This article examines love, relationships, intimacy and gendered violence in fictionalized punk biographies by authors and post-punk recording artists Kauko Röyhkä and Rocko Schamoni. Punk rock’s DIY aesthetic emphasizes self-fashioning and shock value. Where mainstream impression management, in the sense of Goffman’s micro-sociology, aims at hiding one’s ‘stigma’ in the presentation of the self, punk makes the individual’s ‘stigma’ the main feature of self-fashioning. This attitude is at odds with the ways in which the lover, in particular the Barthesian wretched lover, seeks to appear as attractive to the object of their affection. Miss Farkku-Suomi (‘Miss Denim Finland’, 2003) and Dorfpunks (‘Village Punks’, 2004) tell similar stories of transgressive self-fashioning leading to a re-instatement of hegemonic masculinity and heteronormative love narratives. This article contextualizes these findings regarding male punk writing by comparing them to the autobiography of female punk musician and writer Viv Albertine.

Abstract The punk community is one that is frequently encountered on the streets. Punks, as members of this community, have distinct and uniform appearances, such as wearing all-black clothing and a variety of body decorations. The presence of these punk kids is frequently regarded as upsetting by the larger population. Punk kids' behavior almost seldom results in aggression. The majority of this community's members are teenagers. The researchers want to know what causes or encourages punk kids to act aggressively. The literature review method was used in this study by analyzing various articles, journals, and books obtained through the Google Scholar search system. The results of this study indicate that punk children's aggressive behavior tends to be caused by a living environment that has less support for their development. Environments with high levels of poverty also influence this aggressive behavior. The aggressiveness shown tends to be active physical aggressiveness that is carried out directly. Keywords: aggression; punk; environment Abstrak Komunitas punk merupakan sebuah komunitas yang sering ditemui di jalanan. Anak punk sebagai anggota dari komunitas tersebut memiliki penampilan yang mencolok dan identik, seperti menggunakan pakaian serba hitam dan beberapa aksesoris di tubuhnya. Keberadaan anak punk ini sering dianggap mengganggu bagi masyarakat luas. Perilaku yang ditunjukkan oleh anak punk tidak jarang mengarah pada suatu agresivitas. Remaja menjadi sebagian besar dari anggota komunitas ini. Peneliti bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi apa yang menyebabkan atau menjadi motivasi anak punk berperilaku agresi. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode literature review dengan menganalisis berbagai artikel, jurnal, dan buku, yang berhasil diperoleh melalui sistem pencarian Google Scholar. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa anak punk berperilaku agresi cenderung diakibatkan oleh adanya lingkungan tempat tinggal yang kurang mendukung bagi perkembangan mereka. Lingkungan dengan tingkat kemiskinan tinggi turut mempengaruhi perilaku agresi tersebut. Agresivitas yang ditunjukkan cenderung pada agresivitas fisik aktif yang dilakukan secara langsung.

This thesis investigates the everyday experiences of subcultural participants. It takes as its focus the Dutch punk scene, tracing its emergences and development and mapping it historically and spatially. It explores the meanings attached to punk by its participants past and present. If further situates punk as part of participants’ wider lives, in particular in their mobility, connectivity, political engagements and life choices. This thesis speaks to several areas of enquiry. It most prominently contributes to subcultural debates, as well as the emerging field of ‘punk studies’. However the research presented here also has implications for discussions of globalisation, particularly in terms of cultural flow and the effect on local scene ‘boundaries’. It further contributes to conceptual developments of political activity in a world with ever more emphasis on individualised choice. This is an ethnographic project. The arguments presented in this thesis are the result of fieldwork undertaken between July 2010 and April 2011. Data include semi-structured interviews with thirty-three participants of the Dutch punk scene, both past and present. Interview data is further contextualised with a fieldwork diary based on participant observation. As a result of this research, this thesis argues for an approach to social research that recognises the ‘messiness’ and the ‘connectedness’ of the social world. In order to unpick how punk operates and what meanings it has for members, we must understand the wider social, cultural and economic context in which subcultures – and their participants – are embedded. The thesis concludes that in order to productively conceptualise punk we must recognised the artificiality of a number of boundaries. By widening the lens of what punk is, by realising its global context, and by broadening our definition of politics, we will better understand the everyday meaning of punk to its participants around the world.

ABSTRACT Uppsatsens syfte är att skapa förståelse för musikstilarna reggae och punk och deras respektivesubkulturer. Detta genomförs genom att utforska deras ideologier och se hur dessa speglar sig imusiken för att sedan jämföra och analysera dem med fokus på klass och ras. Uppsatsens fokusligger på musikerna och musiken snarare än andra delar av subkulturen.Den störta likheten mellan de båda subkulturerna var motståndet mot överheten. Dettaspeglar sig i deras kläder, attityd och musik på mer eller mindre subtila sätt. De var även mycketmer klass- och rasmedvetna än de flesta andra populärmusikgenrer och subkulturer vid denna tid.Båda var relativt enkla att spela och således anpassade för folk utan lång musikalisk utbildning.Det som skiljer dem är främst musiken. Reggaens disciplinerade, bakåtlutade gung motpunkens frenetiska, spretiga skrammel. Av olika anledningar sågs genrerna som tydligt ”svarta”respektive ”vita”. Även religionens roll i subkulturen är en stor olikhet då reggaen ofta var tungtreligiös medan punken snarare var irreligiös.

The Punk Movement emerged in the mid-1970s as one of the last anti-establishment movements. It started mainly as a musical phenomenon, the punk rock, anti-conformist protest adopted by part of the young American intellectuals and then by the British. In the beggining it was against the commercialism that rock music had submitted to, afterwards it expanded to a social, cultural and artistic movement of anti-establishment youthful challenge. It grew and radicalized within the working class, mainly in Britain, afterwards it spread across all over the world seen by authorities as a subversive culture movement. In Brazil it started in many metropolitan regions of São Paulo in which the most expressivity was observed in the center region emphasized by the media factor, and in the industrial part of ABC region where it obtained more expressive and radical ways where the movement was involved with the working and union fights accurred in the late 1970s and beggining of 1980s
O Movimento Punk surge em meados dos anos 70 como um dos últimos movimentos contraculturais. Se deu primeiramente como um fenômeno musical, o punk rock, música de protesto anti-conformista adotado por uma parcela de jovens intelectuais norte-americanos e depois ingleses. A princípio foi contra a comercialização à qual o rock havia se submetido, posteriormente se expandiu como um movimento social, cultural e artístico, de contestação juvenil anti-establishment. Cresceu e se radicalizou junto à classe operária, principalmente a inglesa, depois se proliferou para o mundo todo, visto pelas autoridades como um movimento de cultura subversiva . No Brasil o movimento radicou-se nas diversas regiões metropolitanas de São Paulo, tendo maior expressividade no centro da capital enfatizado pelo fator midiático e na região industrial do ABC, onde obteve formas mais expressivas e radicais, estando envolvido com as lutas operárias e sindicais ocorridas no final da década de 70 e início dos anos de 1980. This thesis explores the punk phenomenon in China. In order to examine punk members and practices, an ethnographic research was conducted in large-scale cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, and small-scale cities, such as Wuhan and Huaihua in China, as well as on the Internet. In particular, the thesis focuses on two prominent themes subculture and resistance as the main directions of analysis. Through discussing findings from the three dimensions of the individual, collective and online, it is argued that the Chinese punk phenomenon exists as a subculture and punk subcultural practices can be regarded as manifesting forms of resistance in China. First, this study presents a detailed individual biography of one punk musician and then further examines those of other participants. It is discovered that subcultural resistance can have a different impact at different stages of a person s life. Second, this study demonstrates forms of collective practices and how they are manifested, and reveals how Chinese punk subculture members collectively produce different forms of subcultural resistance. Finally, this study examines Chinese punk online. It focuses on how online group members produce meanings of their activities and deploy specific techniques to resist online norms and censorship. Overall this thesis contributes to the ongoing discussions in current field of subcultural studies. By providing a study on punk subculture in China, the research engages empirically in the question of power relations in a society from both individual and collective levels, which has rarely been undertaken before.

Using a distinctly and deliberately interdisciplinary approach to the subject of religion and spirituality as it presents itself within modern Western Societies today, this thesis argues that Straight Edge hardcore punk is a surrogate for religion. The term surrogate is used to denote the notion of a successor and a protector and provider of nourishment. It has been re-interpreted from Theodore Ziolkowski’s work on the same term in ‘Modes of Faith’, in which he examines surrogates for religion which emerged during the early part of the 20th century. An in-depth study, both theoretical and ethnographic in nature and presentation, of Straight Edge hardcore punk is provided to demonstrate that traditionally held categories of religion, secular, sacred and profane are being dismantled and re-built around ideas of authenticity, community, integrity, d.i.y and spirituality. Through the syncretic practices of the Straight Edge adherents they are de-essentialising religion and thus enabling us to re-consider the question of what religion is or could be. This thesis relies on theoretical ideas, interview quotes, informant quotes, researcher taken photographs, and interviewee created or utilised images, tattoos, graffiti and flyers. All of these are interspersed with song lyrics from various bands relevant to the time period under discussion and the themes being drawn out. Much like the adherents themselves, this thesis exists very much within the space of the ‘in-between’, which creates and reacts to necessary tensions throughout.

This thesis explores the relationships between punk and anarchism in the contemporary contexts of the UK, Poland, and Indonesia from an insider punk and anarchist perspective. New primary ethnographic information forms the bulk of the research, drawing on Grounded Theory Method and an engagement with Orientalism. The theoretical framework is informed by the concept of antinomy which embraces complication and contradiction and rather than attempt to smooth-out complexities, impose a simplified narrative, or construct a fanciful dialectic, the thesis examines the numerous tensions that emerge in order to critique the relationships between punk and anarchism. A key tension which runs throughout the PhD is the dismissal of punk by some anarchists. This is often couched in terms of lifestylist versus workerist anarchism, with punk being denigrated in association with the former. The case studies bring out this tension, but also significantly complicate it, and the final chapter analyses this issue in more detail to argue that punk engages with a wide spectrum of anarchisms, and that the lifestylist / workerist dichotomy is anyway false. The case studies themselves focus on themes such as anti-fascism, food sovereignty/animal rights activism, politicisation, feminism, squatting, religion, and repression. New empirical information, garnered through numerous interviews and extensive participant observation in the UK, Poland, and Indonesia, informs the thick description of the case study contexts. The theory and analysis emerge from this data, and the voice of the punks themselves is given primacy here.

Lydia Lunch, David Wojnarowicz and Vaginal Davis are artists who each produced music, film, literature, performance, visual art and installation whilst participating in the subcultural communities of post-punk. This thesis frames them as post-punk polymaths, artists whose subcultural participation provides a link between their multiple artistic outputs. I position these artists in relation to the historical context of post-punk, and document its influence on both specific examples of their work and their artistic strategies more broadly. My original contribution is of a sustained process of attention to the work of these three artists that negotiates their personal antagonisms towards criticism and resistance to historicisation, the methodological challenge exemplified by their practice, and the critical potential of embracing this difficulty. Through an account of New York's post-punk scene (the formative artistic environment of both Lunch and Wojnarowicz), I examine the way the material conditions of the subculture provoked an undifferentiated, multi-media practice. I explore Lunch's work through this subcultural context, and the interrelations of her diverse outputs and intentional blurring of art and life in her public persona. Through the work of David Wojnarowicz, I explore the potential pitfalls of overdetermination, or confined articulations of his practice within popular criticism and academia. My third case study moves away from New York to focus on the work of Los Angeles post-punk artist Vaginal Davis, examining the responsibility subculturally invested artists may have in maintaining their own marginality, through a framing of Davis's practice as self-sabotaging. My thesis therefore highlights the difficulty of rationalising these practices as objects of disciplinarily constituted analysis, the problematic nature of their omission or selective and incomplete engagement, and examines the potential of the term polymath to understand artists whose work fails to map on to the disciplinary remits of academic scholars, genre critics or popular historians.

The memoirs of (post-) punk musician Viv Albertine address the issue of choice or lack thereof in romantic and family relationships. They depict a world in which choice of romantic partners appears normal if often unsuccessful, whereas choice within family relationships is restricted. It is self-evident that one cannot choose one’s blood relatives. However, amplified by Albertine’s scepticism towards any social relationships, her two memoirs represent ‘negative choice’ (Eva Illouz) in heterosexual romantic relationships and the complex ways in which negative choice can change family dynamics. In her memoirs, Albertine presents loneliness as the opposite of love which aligns with her model of choice, as it is preferable to live a lonely life over being bound up in love relationships, romantic or familial, which are harmful to one’s wellbeing. This article demonstrates how the ethos of early punk is translated into an uncompromising process of life writing which presents itself as faithfulness towards the individual’s core need for self-realisation and self-expression against the backdrop of failing romantic and familial relationships, severe physical and mental health problems, a self-diagnosis of autism and a patriarchal society.

Metallic residues are distributed heterogeneously onto small-arms range soils from projectile fragmentation upon impact with a target or berm backstop. Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) can address the spatially heterogeneous contamination of surface soils on small-arms ranges, but representative kilogram-sized ISM subsamples are affected by the range of metallic residue particle sizes in the sample. This study compares the precision and concentrations of metals in a small-arms range soil sample processed by a puck mill, ring and puck mill, ball mill, and mortar and pestle prior to analysis. The ball mill, puck mill, and puck and ring mill produced acceptable relative standard deviations of less than 15% for the anthropogenic metals of interest (Lead (Pb), Antimony (Sb), Copper (Cu), and Zinc (Zn)), with the ball mill exhibiting the greatest precision for Pb, Cu, and Zn. Precision by mortar and pestle, without milling, was considerably higher (40% to >100%) for anthropogenic metals. Media anthropogenic metal concentrations varied by more than 40% between milling methods, with the greatest concentrations produced by the puck mill, followed by the puck and ring mill and then the ball mill. Metal concentrations were also dependent on milling time, with concentrations stabilizing for the puck mill by 300 s but still increasing for the ball mill over 20 h. Differences in metal concentrations were not directly related to the surface area of the milled sample. Overall, the tested milling methods were successful in producing reproducible data for soils containing metallic residues. However, the effects of milling type and time on concentrations require consideration in environmental investigations.

Water, recognised by United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6, is essential to sustain all life. It intersects with various aspects of our civilisation, heritage, health, and survival. In this project, we developed pedagogical tools using place-based, multidisciplinary, imaginal, and interactive content for middle school students. The expected outcome of this pedagogy is to equip students with knowledge and core competencies such as critical transdisciplinary analysis, systems thinking, and collaborative decision-making that are essential to reimagine just, resilient, and equitable water futures. We called this curriculum the “Water Classrooms”. The core partners in this work included Living Waters Museum, Centre for Water Research, Science Activity Centre at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER Pune), and the Centre for Environment Education (Pune).
