Streszczenie:
In commenting on the work of Kelly, Bannister and Fransella (1980: 53) note that research may be defined as the process whereby people try to make sense of things. In order to achieve this, the importance of working with rather than on subjects is stressed as is the need for researchers to explicitly state, as far as they are able, the constructs within which they believe themselves to be working. Cohen et al note that critical theory and critical educational research have a substantive agenda: for example, examining and interrogating: the relationships between school and society - how schools perpetuate or reduce inequality; the social construction of knowledge and curricula, who defines worthwhile knowledge, what ideological interests this serves, how power is produced and reproduced through education. (2007: 27) Underlying both of these assertions is the implication that in order effectively to look outwards, the researcher must be prepared to look inwards; in order to move forwards, one must critically assess the past. Such a project requires critical thinking, that is, thinking that embodies the attributes of `quality' thinking based on a sound knowledge of context and resulting in reasoned judgements regarding what to believe and how to act. Streszczenie:
This submission provides a commentary on thirteen of Richard Riddell's publications between 1999 and 2010. It explains the professional and policy contexts from the early 1990s onwards, when the author was a senior Local Authority officer, which gave rise to the thinking behind the first phase of his publications. These included the development of a bespoke school improvement process, deeply rooted in the context of the communities served by a school, and involving the development of an urban pedagogy and curricula. The centre piece of this phase was Schools for Our Cities (Riddell, 2003b). Attention then moved for phase 2 of the publications towards the social processes outside school that advantage middle class children within it. Research for this phase identified a managed model of social reproduction being operated by middle class families with children at independent schools, and an independent school/prestigious university nexus. Policy interventions of the 2000s might have begun to create analogous kinds of social processes for working class children, but they are no longer in place. The central piece for phase 2 was Aspiration, Identity and Self-Belief (Riddell, 2010).

This thesis documents the development of a web-application attacking the problem of visualization of co-authorship networks. The visualization encompasses several views. Each of them shows different aspects of the data which is loaded from Academic Archive Online (DiVa), a library system which holds all publications released in the Linnaeus University.  To detect relationships among authors, a new interactive layout for Node-Link Diagrams was developed which shows publications, authors and corresponding organizations (faculties, departments) in a radial manner. This Network-View is connected to another view showing the attributes (year, type) of the publications. In development, particular emphasis was placed on a rich support of user interaction in order to equip the user with a tool that allows graphical and explorative analysis of the underlying data.

DiVA, Academic Archive On-line, is a website which can provide the information from the most academic publications of Swedish Universities. The information includes the title, author, publication data, and so on. The aim of this project is to design a tool to visualize the co-authorship publication network and be able to transform the data into a more readable form. For parsing and visualizing data, the tool adopts the “InforVis Reference” model. Here a set of interaction and visualization technologies are adopted, so that it can create view base on user’s query with increasing the usability. In this thesis, we present a “use case” by applying our tool to visualize a part of articles published at Linnaeus University and to illustrate the capability and functions of the tool. The tool can also provide user a comfortable operating environment with a quick searching speed and high efficiency; it can be used anywhere, if internet is available.

Scientific managers need to understand the impact of the research they support since they are required to evaluate researchers and their work for funding and promotional purposes. Yet, most of the online tools available to explore publication data, such as Google Scholar (GS), Microsoft Academic Search (MAS), and Scopus, present tabular views of publication data that fail to put scholars in a social, institutional, and geographic context. Moreover, these tools fail to provide aggregate views of the data for countries, organizations, and journals. Here, we introduce Opus, an interactive online platform that integrates, aggregates, and visualizes publication data from GS to present users with publication data at four different scales (e.g., scholars, countries, organizations, and journals). At each scale, Opus provides benchmarked visualizations that facilitate understanding the work of scholars in a social, generational, geographic, and institutional context. We conducted two user studies with a small group of potential users that show supporting evidence for the benefits of our approach. This design study contributes to the relatively unexplored but promising area of using information visualization to explore publication data.

Aims: 2005-2007 abstracts This study aimed to identify the: • number of clinical trials that were presented from 2005-2007 at the conferences of the: o American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), o European Orthodontic Society (EOS), o International Association for Dental Research (IADR), o European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA) o Australian Society of Orthodontists Congress (ASO) • abstracts that went on to be published as a full paper in a peer reviewed journal. • time to publication for those abstracts that were subsequently published as a full paper in a peer reviewed journal. • following characteristics of the abstract and determine their influence on the rate of and time to publication: o Result significance: (Significant, Non-significant, or Unclear) o Mode of presentation (Oral or Poster) o Study design (RCT / CCT) o Sample Size: (Absolute number) o Funding disclosure: (Yes / No) o Continent of origin: (North America, South America, Europe, UK, Asia, Africa, Australasia). o Primary author: • Gender (Male / Female / Unclear) • Professional status: (Professor / Non-professor / Unclear) • Identify reasons why abstracts did not achieve publication. University Teachers Group (UTG) abstracts This study aimed to identify the: • number of abstracts presented at the University Teachers Group session, from 1999-2010, at the British Orthodontic Conference. • following characteristics of the abstract and determine their influence on rate of and time to publication: o Funding disclosure: (Yes / No) o Dental School of origin • abstracts that went on to be published as a full paper in a peer reviewed journal. Design: Retrospective, observational study. Subject and Setting: The sample frame included dental clinical trials presented at the conferences of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR), European Orthodontic Society (EOS), European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA), The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and The Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO) from January 2005 to December 2007. The sample frame for the University Teachers Group (UTG) abstracts, included abstracts presented at the UTG session of the British Orthodontic Conference (BOC) 1999-2010. Sample size Spencer found a publication rate of 38% from abstracts of clinical trials presented at EOS, IADR, ORCA and a 50% increase would be give a publication rate of 57%. Using data from Spencer in Pocock’s formula, 210 abstracts would be required to give 80% power, at the 5% level, and enable me to detect a 50% rise in the proportion of clinical trial abstracts published. Method: Clinical trials presented at above conferences were identified from the associated journals or conference proceedings. Inter-examiner and intra-examiner reliability were assessed using a random 10% sample of abstracts. A MEDLINE search was undertaken to determine whether the abstract had been published in full. The date of publication was recorded. Authors of abstracts that did not reach publication were contacted to determine the reasons. Results: Seven thousand and sixty-nine abstracts presented from 2005-2007 were identified, including 215 clinical trials. 142 abstracts were identified from the UTG session from 1998 – 2008, and all were included. The publication rate for the 2005-2007 sample was 32.6% and the UTG sample 34.5%. There were no predictors of publication in either group studied. The median time to publication of the 2005 – 2007 group was 16.00 months, IQR (10, 26) and the mean time to publication for the UTG group was 18.3 months (95% CI 14.38, 22.19). For the unpublished 2005-2007 group, reasons given for failure to publish were lack of time (8.3%), language, culture, lack of teaching (1.4%), rejection (0.7%), motivation (0.7%), perceived editorial bias (0.7%) and length of review process (0.7%). For the UTG group, reasons given included lack of time (19.4%), lack of interest from SpR (9.7%) or in press (7.5%). Conclusions: No predictors of publication were found for either group studied. For the unpublished 2005-2007 group, main reasons given were lack of time (8.3%), language, culture and lack of teaching (1.4%). For the UTG group, reasons given included lack of time (19.4%), lack of interest from SpR (9.7%) or in press (7.5%). The qualitative results should be viewed with caution due to the low response rate (12.4% for the 2005 – 2007 sample, and 68.8% for UTG).

Section B of this document summarises the coherent subset of my published research on which I have chosen to be examined (57 papers); and Section C lists all my publications, excluding conference proceedings and published abstracts. Individuals named as co-authors on publications are all those persons without whose assistance the work would not have been done. These include all research assistants provided by the Australian Research Grants Scheme, 1978-1984 and 1986—1988; and by the Australian Research Council in 1989. These Research Assistants are: D. White, 1978-1979; M. Johnson, 1980-1984; T. O’Connor, 1986; S. Johnstone, 1987; and R. van der Zwan, 1988-1989. With very few exceptions, in the case of the 53 papers papers to be examined and upon which I appear as first author, the initial idea, experimental design, some or all of the data collection, the data analysis, the writing of the manuscript and the figure preparation were all done by me. With reference to all of the 73 papers listed in Section C, those on which I appear as other than first author were Psychology IV Honours or MA students’ projects to which I contributed by assisting with the research and writing the paper (15, 16, 18, 20, 33, 58, 68, 71), collaborative efl‘orts in all respects with other staff at this or some other University (5, 6, 8, 9, 14, 25, 26, 34, 48, 51) or were papers to which I contributed substantially but judged that the research assistant’s contribution warranted first authorship (66, 72).

Objectives: To review, apply and compare existing publication bias methodology. To extend the selection model methods that adjust combined estimates and to develop models to adjust for publication bias and heterogeneity simultaneously. ' Methods: Methodologies that test for the existence of publication bias, estimate the number of missing studies, and adjust combined estimates for publication bias are reviewed. Parametric weighted distribution methodology is developed further. The existing family of distributions is extended to include a logistic function. Weight functions previously limited to modelling selection based on two-tailed p-values have been restructured for one-tailed p-values. The selection mechanism model has been developed to incorporate both p-values and precision. The model for effect size has been developed to incorporate linear predictors, so heterogeneity and publication bias can be modelled simultaneously. Data: Two systematic reviews taken from the Cochrane Library and simulation studies. Results: Methods that test for the existence of publication bias or estimate the number of missing studies are limited by the strength of their assumptions and low power. Weighted distributions offer the only way to directly assess the impact of publication bias. In data sets in which there is heterogeneity or the true treatment effect is null, modelling the selection mechanism on p-values only can lead to over-adjusted estimates and considerable variability between estimates with wide confidence intervals. Extending the selection model to include precision reduces this. It is then possible to include other covariates such as study quality or type. The effect-size model can be extended in a similar way to include linear predictors. Combination of these two models allows simultaneous consideration of the influence of publication bias and heterogeneity. Conclusions: Weighted distributions offer a flexible approach to modelling publication bias. Inclusion of precision in the selection model reduces sensitivity of the model to the shape of the selection model improving consistency of results. No selection model should be used on its own but in conjunction with others to allow a sensitivity approach

Scholars need to conduct research and publish their studies to cope with institutional rules and advance in their career, which makes publishing a subject of great importance for all the academy. In this dissertation I conduct multiple studies that investigate a set of internal and external factors that influence research publication of Brazilian researchers in the field of Management. For this, four steps are used, consisting in four distinct and interconnected studies. Therefore, I explore the publication of articles, core competencies for top-level publication, rejection factors, differences between journal ranks. The studies contained in this dissertation have implications to three main audiences. First, scholars are able to better understand what influences their productivity. Second, doctoral programs are able to know what are the most important factors in the training of future researchers. Third, institutional agencies can rethink institutional demands for publication and their true implications.

The peer-review system is undoubtedly the gold standard of scientific publication. Peer review serves a two-fold purpose; to screen out of publication articles containing incorrect or irrelevant science and to improve the quality of the ones deemed suitable for publication. Moreover, the role of the scientific journals and editors is to ensure that valid scientific knowledge is disseminated to the appropriate target group of scientists and to the public. However, the peer review system has recently been criticized, in that it is unsustainable, inefficient and slows down publication. In this PhD thesis, I used complex-systems modeling to study the macroscopic behavior of the scientific publication and peer-review systems. In my first project, I modeled empirical data from various sources, such as Pubmed and Publons, to assess the sustainability of the system. I showed that the potential supply has been exceeding the demand for peer review by 15% to 249% and thus, the system is sustainable in terms of volume. However, 20% of researchers have been performing 69% to 94% of the annual reviews, which emphasizes a significant imbalance in terms of effort by the scientific community. The results provided evidence contrary to the widely-adopted, but untested belief, that the demand for peer review over-exceeds the supply, and they indicated that the majority of researchers do not contribute to the process. In my second project, I developed a large-scale agent-based model, which mimicked the behavior of the conventional peer-review system. This model was calibrated with empirical data from the biomedical domain. Using this model as a base for my third project, I developed and assessed the performance of five alternative peer-review systems by measuring peer-review efficiency, reviewer effort and scientific dissemination as compared to the conventional system. In my simulations, two alternative systems, in which scientists shared past reviews of their rejected manuscripts with the editors of the next journal to which they submitted, performed equally or sometimes better in terms of peer-review efficiency. They also each reduced the overall reviewer effort by ~63%. In terms of scientific dissemination, they decreased the median time from first submission until publication by ~47% and diffused on average 10% to 36% more scientific information (i.e., manuscript intrinsic quality x journal impact factor) than the conventional system. Finally, my agent-based model may be an approach to simulate alternative peer-review systems (or interventions), find those that are the most promising and aid decisions about which systems may be introduced into real-world trials

McGregor, Rowena. "Education higher degree research students writing for publication". Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2012. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/63275/1/Rowena_McGregor_Thesis.pdf.

Streszczenie:
Higher Degree Research (HDR) student publications are increasingly valued by students, by professional communities and by research institutions. Peer-reviewed publications form the HDR student writer's publication track record and increase competitiveness in employment and research funding opportunities. These publications also make the results of HDR student research available to the community in accessible formats. HDR student publications are also valued by universities because they provide evidence of institutional research activity within a field and attract a return on research performance. However, although publications are important to multiple stakeholders, many Education HDR students do not publish the results of their research. Hence, an investigation of Education HDR graduates who submitted work for publication during their candidacy was undertaken. This multiple, explanatory case study investigated six recent Education HDR graduates who had submitted work to peer-reviewed outlets during their candidacy. The conceptual framework supported an analysis of the development of Education HDR student writing using Alexander's (2003, 2004) Model of Domain Learning which focuses on expertise, and Lave and Wenger's (1991) situated learning within a community of practice. Within this framework, the study investigated how these graduates were able to submit or publish their research despite their relative lack of writing expertise. Case data were gathered through interviews and from graduate publication records. Contextual data were collected through graduate interviews, from Faculty and university documents, and through interviews with two Education HDR supervisors. Directed content analysis was applied to all data to ascertain the support available in the research training environment. Thematic analysis of graduate and supervisor interviews was then undertaken to reveal further information on training opportunities accessed by the HDR graduates. Pattern matching of all interview transcripts provided information on how the HDR graduates developed writing expertise. Finally, explanation building was used to determine causal links between the training accessed by the graduates and their writing expertise. The results demonstrated that Education HDR graduates developed publications and some level of expertise simultaneously within communities of practice. Students were largely supported by supervisors who played a critical role. They facilitated communities of practice and largely mediated HDR engagement in other training opportunities. However, supervisor support alone did not ensure that the HDR graduates developed writing expertise. Graduates who appeared to develop the most expertise, and produce a number of publications reported experiencing both a sustained period of engagement within one community of practice, and participation in multiple communities of practice. The implications for the MDL theory, as applied to academic writing, suggests that communities of practice can assist learners to progress from initial contact with a new domain of interest through to competence. The implications for research training include the suggestion that supervisors as potentially crucial supporters of HDR student writing for publication should themselves be active publishers. Also, Faculty or university sponsorship of communities of practice focussed on HDR student writing for publication could provide effective support for the development of HDR student writing expertise and potentially increase the number of their peer-reviewed publications.

Introduction. Conclusion.
Introduction. Evidence of selective outcome reporting in medical literature is well-known. In 2005, a policy requiring investigators to deposit information in a registry before study onset was initiated. This initiative ambitioned to reduce biases. This study aims to assess: 1)The frequency of trial registration since these recommandations 2)The adequacy between published articles and registers 3)The use of registered information by reviewers. Results: 1)In 40 of the 144 articles, the studies had been registered (27. 8%). Moreover, 24 reports (23%) contained misleading conclusions, of the 105 articles with a clear primary outcome (PO). Négative trial results were associated with misleading abstract conclusions. In the second study, of the 323 included trials, 147 (45. 5%) were adequately registered (i. E. , registered before the end of the trial, with the PO clearly specified). 2)Among the 147 articles with trials adequately registered, 46 (31%) showed some evidence of outcome reporting bias, of which, when the PO description was available, 82. 6% (19/23) had PO results that were statistically significant. 3)Of the 1,136 responses (37. 5%), 676 (59. 5%) had reviewed an article in the past 2 years. Among these, 232 (34. 3%) looked at a trial registry. If one or more items differed between the registry record and the manuscript, 206 reviewers mentioned the discrepancy in their review comments, 46 advised editors not to accept the manuscript. Conclusion. There is an increase in trial registration, and also discrepancies between registered and published information. However, the situation is encouraging because a third of reviewers already use registers in the peer-review process

Streszczenie:
Meta-analysis is the statistical part of a systematic review. Many researchers have used selection functions to model publication bias in a meta-analysis. The main problem with this approach is that it is impossible to verify that the selection function truly represents the selection process, and so the use of selection functions can only be seen as part of a sensitivity analysis. In this thesis we present new methods that involve selection functions that aim to make as few strong assumptions about selection as possible, including the use of a non-parametric permutation test, and the use of a step selection function. We also investigate the use of parametric selection functions and suggest how researchers could use these as part of a sensitivity analysis, by looking at a range of plausible values for the overall selection probability. As part of this sensitivity analysis, we assess the effectiveness of the Bounds method as presented by Henmi et al. Throughout the thesis we illustrate all methods with numerical examples, including a meta-analysis investigating the effects of environmental tobacco smoke on the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Streszczenie:
The first part of the thesis comprises Chapters 1 to 40 of the novel, written under a pseudonym, followed by a synopsis of the remaining chapters, 41 to 155. The potential jacket copy will refer to the protagonists, a male and a female detective. The second part of the thesis is a critical study of the novel. Literary theory and critical methods are used to investigate the writing process and to explicate the text’s layers of meaning, not all of which were clear to the author at the time of writing. Chapter 1 considers literary and creative writing theory, paying particular attention to conceptualisations of author and reader. In Chapter 2, the chosen pseudonym is explained and compared with those of other authors; the novel’s title is also examined. Chapter 3 covers the issue of genre, looking at theories and discussing both crime novel and Gothic fiction. In Chapter 4, critical approaches to character are applied. Chapter 5 does the same with plot. Chapters 6 and 7 take account of the manifestations of power. Chapter 6 covers the body and gender, while Chapter 7 deals with race and class. As a conclusion, Chapter 8 describes how the first draft was transformed to one acceptable for publication.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the work of antiquary and scholar Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) in publishing significant and influential collections of early English and Scottish literature, including the first collection of medieval romance, by going beyond the biographical approaches to Ritson's work typical of nineteenth- and twentieth-century accounts, incorporating an analysis of Ritson's contributions to specific fields into a study of the context which made his work possible. It makes use of the 'Register of Manuscripts Sent to the Reading Room of the British Museum' to shed new light on Ritson's use of the manuscript collections of the British Museum. The thesis argues that Ritson's early polemic attacks on Thomas Warton, Thomas Percy, and the editors of Shakespeare allowed Ritson to establish his own claims to expertise and authority, built upon the research he had already undertaken in the British Museum and other public and private collections. Through his publications, Ritson experimented with different strategies for organizing, systematizing, interpreting and presenting his research, constructing very different collections for different kinds of texts, and different kinds of readers. A comparison of Ritson's three major collections of songs - A Select Collection of English Songs (1783), Ancient Songs (1790), and Scotish Songs (1794) - demonstrates some of the consequences of his decisions, particularly the distinction made between English and Scottish material. Although Ritson's Robin Hood (1795) is the most frequently reprinted of his collections, and one of the best studied, approaching this work within the immediate context of Ritson's research and other publications, rather than its later reception, offers some explanation for its more idiosyncratic features. Finally, Ritson's Ancient Engleish Metrical Romance's (1802) provides a striking example of Ritson's participation in collaborative networks and the difficulty of finding an audience and a market for editions of early English literature at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Streszczenie:
Every scientific research begins with a literature review that includes an extensive bibliographic search. Such searches are known to be difficult and time-consuming because of the vast amount of topical material existing in today's ever-changing technology base. Keeping up-to-date with related literature and being aware of the most recent publications require extensive time and effort. The need for a WWW-based software tool for collecting and providing access to this scientific body of knowledge is undeniable. The study explained herein deals with this problem by developing an efficient, advanced, easy-to-use tool, WebBiblio, that provides a globally accessible WWW environment enabling the collection and dissemination of searchable bibliographies comprised of abstracts and keywords. This thesis describes the design, structure and features of WebBiblio, and explains the ideas and approaches used in its development. The developed system is not a prototype, but a production system that exploits the capabilities of the WWW. Currently, it is used to publish three VV&T bibliographies at the WWW site: http://manta.cs.vt.edu/biblio. With its rich set of features and ergonomically engineered interface, WebBiblio brings a comprehensive solution to solving the problem of globally collecting and providing access to a diverse set of bibliographies.

How can research into writing process inform undergraduate teaching? And, what kinds of readings might best be applied to texts by emerging writers? These questions contribute to scholarship on writing process in the discipline of creative writing. The introduction contextualises these questions and discusses the origins of the papers in conjunction with the process used to write the novel. Novel. Ireland, Philippa. "Material factors affecting the publication of black British fiction". Thesis, Open University, 2010. http://oro.open.ac.uk/54220/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis examines some of the material factors affecting the publication of black British fiction during the last three decades of the twentieth century. It argues that a study of the publishing history of black British fiction in this period must take into account wider political and cultural issues, as well as the internal structure and mechanics of book publishing. It therefore explores how shifting cultural, political and commercial contexts influenced the selection, marketing, supply and reception of a number of black British texts. The importance of the interaction between such 'external' factors and the 'internal' modus operandi of book production and distribution is highlighted throughout. A distinctive aspect of this thesis is its use of archives and personal testimonies provided by significant figures in publishing as key sources of information. The Introduction sets out the scope of the thesis, addressing, in particular, the label 'black British' and how it is to be used within the study. It also situates the research firmly within the discipline of Book History, considering some of the most influential models that have been proposed to help us understand the circulation of books in society. Part One establishes the historical context. Beginning with the early publication of black writers from the Caribbean in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s, it moves on to consider the ways in which black writers and writing were affected by changing political and cultural agendas throughout this period. It investigates the effect of multicultural policies and practice upon education and librarianship, as well as the response of local government and the Arts Council strategy to the changing make-up of British society, arguing that the impact of these wider developments had a significant influence upon the publication of black British fiction. Part Two focuses on publishers, publishing and prizes. It opens by offering a critical analysis of the activities and legacy of two pioneering black British publishers, both established in Britain in the late 1960s: New Beacon Books and Bogle L'Ouverture. The contrasting approach of the niche publisher X Press provides an example of the variety of ways in which autonomous black British presses evolved over the course of three decades. Comparisons are made with the role played by feminist publishers in Britain in the promotion of fiction by marginal groups, and it is argued that the market success of African American women's writing was an important influence on decisions by feminist publishers to publish black British women writers in the UK. This is followed by a detailed investigation of the literary prize phenomenon and its influence upon the publication of black British fiction. The final chapter of the thesis proffers a critical account of the success of some black British novelists in the light of this phenomenon. It argues that literary prizes with very specific entry criteria were to have a marked influence upon the literary careers of a handful of black British writers, and that this in turn had the effect of raising the profile of black British fiction more generally, thus demonstrating its commercial viability. In conclusion, it is argued that the period from the early 1980s to the 2000s represented a very specific and important moment in the publishing history of black British fiction. There still remains a role in the current market for a number of different publishers of black British fiction. This now needs to be viewed, however, within a context where the relevance and contemporary significance of the label 'black British' is constantly being reassessed.

The databases of the Deep Web are generally underrepresented by the search engines due to the technical challenges of locating, accessing and indexing them. The use of hyperlinks by search engines is not sufficient to achieve all the Deep Web data, requiring interaction with complex queries interfaces. This thesis presents an approach, called W-Ray, that provides visibility to Deep Web data. The approach relies on describing the relevant data through well-structured sentences, and on publishing the sentences as static Web pages. The sentences can be generated with embedded RDFa, keeping the semantics of the database. The Web pages thus generated are indexed by traditional Web crawlers and sophisticated crawlers that support semantic search. It is also presented a tool that supports the W-Ray approach. The approach has been successfully implemented for some real databases.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the persuasive effects of literature both personally and socially, via the codification of character archetypes in fiction (exemplified here in high fantasy fiction). This thesis firstly explores the manner in which literature can affect individuals' beliefs, and how certain representations of groups (in this case, women) can be inherited and maintained through genre norms, themselves maintained through traditional publishing models and financial concerns. Next, this thesis offers an analysis of self-published novels' responses to the archetypal representations of women within high fantasy, as exemplified in two popular high fantasy works, The Lord of the Rings and A Game of Thrones, and four self-published novels (including the author's own). It then focuses on whether self-publishing allows for the highlighted genre norms to be more easily subverted due to the nature of the new publishing model. It concludes with a discussion on the possibility of a new form of literary understanding, termed by the author 'multiliteraryism'. Building on debates in the field of world literature and multilingualism, multiliteraryism, it is suggested, can offer a new method of understanding multiple voices and representations, absent any denigration in terms of the means of publication.

Streszczenie:
Dissertation (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is aimed at describing gender difference in publication productivity among South African academic authors, and to develop an understanding of possible reasons for these differences. It is argued that the lack of empirical knowledge of publication productivity of academics in South Africa needs to be addressed, as scientific communication through publication is one of the most central social processes in science. Moreover, one form of scientific publication, the peer-reviewed article, has become the single most important aspect according to which academics in South Africa and abroad are rewarded. The focus on gender differences is motivated by the fact that women have been strengthening their representation in South African HEIs, but not their proportional contribution to our country’s output of accredited research articles. A review of the past four decades of empirical and theoretical work on the gender gap in publication productivity leads the author to identify three sets of factors that may account for its existence: gender-socialised differences between women and men, women’s greater family responsibilities, and gender-related deficits in the academic workplace. However, none of these sets of variables by themselves satisfactorily account for gender differences in publication productivity, and they should not be considered independent from each other. The literature review is followed by a review of methodological considerations that need to be taken into account when studying gender differences in publication productivity. Against this background, the advantages and limitations associated with the first empirical project of the dissertation - a secondary analysis of SA Knowledgebase, an existing bibliometric database - are identified. This analysis is aimed at quantifying gender differences in the publication productivity of South African academic authors; at controlling for relevant variables (race, age, highest qualification, rank, institutional affiliation and scientific domain); and at investigating gender differences in the tendency towards joint authorship. The results show that South African male authors publish almost twice as many articles in accredited journals than women authors do, but that the latter’s contribution to the total scientific publication output of South Africa has increased from 16 percent in 1990 to 24 percent in 2001. Part of the gender gap in publication productivity can be explained by women’s younger age, lower qualification level and lower rank as a gender group, but not by any tendency among women to co-author less than men do. This project was complemented by the analysis of primary data collected from the CVs of and qualitative interviews with sixteen highly productive South African academics. This second project contributes to the development of a more in-depth understanding of the way in which men and women’s publication productivity is differentially affected, in a predominantly male milieu and across the span of their careers, by their family responsibilities, non-research academic roles, and gender-socialisation. The dissertation concludes with an integration of the literature review with the main findings of the two projects, on the basis of which recommendations are made for future research, and proposals are made towards rendering the measurement of publication productivity more sensitive to the gender differences highlighted by the dissertation.

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Citation analysis is an important tool in the academic community. It can aid universities, funding bodies, and individual researchers to evaluate scientific work and direct resources appropriately. With the rapid growth of the scientific enterprise and the increase of online libraries that include citation analysis tools, the need for a systematic evaluation of these tools becomes more important. The research presented in this study deals with scientific research output, i.e., articles and citations, and how they can be used in bibliometrics to measure academic success. More specifically, this research analyses algorithms that rank academic entities such as articles, authors and journals to address the question of how well these algorithms can identify important and high-impact entities. A consistent mathematical formulation is developed on the basis of a categorisation of bibliometric measures such as the h-index, the Impact Factor for journals, and ranking algorithms based on Google’s PageRank. Furthermore, the theoretical properties of each algorithm are laid out. The ranking algorithms and bibliometric methods are computed on the Microsoft Academic Search citation database which contains 40 million papers and over 260 million citations that span across multiple academic disciplines. We evaluate the ranking algorithms by using a large test data set of papers and authors that won renowned prizes at numerous Computer Science conferences. The results show that using citation counts is, in general, the best ranking metric. However, for certain tasks, such as ranking important papers or identifying high-impact authors, algorithms based on PageRank perform better. As a secondary outcome of this research, publication trends across academic disciplines are analysed to show changes in publication behaviour over time and differences in publication patterns between disciplines.

In many markets for cultural goods, gatekeepers select the cultural goods, relatively few cultural goods are selected, and the criteria for selection are unclear to both artists and gatekeepers. Not knowing whether cultural goods are of the 'right' quality to be selected, artists and gatekeepers become preoccupied with handling quality uncertainty. This thesis studies such handling of quality uncertainty before, during, and after aspiring writers attempt to succeed in the publishing market. Drawing on eighty interviews with mainly aspiring writers and publishers in Sweden, three papers investigate three phases of handling quality uncertainty in the publishing market. First, in attempting to get published, writers handled uncertainty about how the quality of their work would be evaluated in the publishing market by using appraisal devices: trusted, knowledgeable appraisals of their work’s chances of success or failure on the publishing market. Second, publishers responded to uncertainty about the quality of manuscripts by learning to consider means before ends, such that certain qualities of their reading experience became the necessary means for realizing that the manuscript might be publishable. This realization moved the manuscript from the discovery phase to justification phase, in which publishers made a final decision to select or reject the manuscript. Third, for the rejected writer, the uncertainty of not knowing how the publisher had determined the quality of the manuscript made it possible to excuse the course of events. Writers gave reasons why their manuscript had been rejected based on how they imagined publishers had determined its quality. They accepted the occurrence of failure but dismissed the responsibility for having failed. Writers also engaged in justifications, refusals, and concessions of the perceived failure. These concepts for analyzing the publishing market are based on a perspective that takes into account subjectivity, temporality, and the condition of quality uncertainty. The perspective and concepts are useful for understanding other market situations in the cultural industries, wherein the successful hiring of cultural workers and the acquisition of cultural goods are rare relative to the number of aspirants, and wherein assessments are conditioned by quality uncertainty that needs to be handled.

Our work propose a device for assisting the authoring process of multimedias discourses based on previously annotated audiovisual archives. This approach focus on assistance of the author. The SAPHIR project (Système d’Assistance à la Publication Hypermédia guidée par les Intentions Rhétoriques) aims to build an editorial framework allowing an expert of content, but novice in multimedia audiovisual editing tools, easily create document based on audiovisual archive. Our approach use modeling based on rhetoric to examine the differents components from intentions to the final multimedia document. We make difference between the logic intentions and the discursive arrangement of materials. Each dimension of editing task (logic component, discourses arrangement component and layout component) is a step in the publication process. All of these proposals is available in an effective framework. Contribution can be summarized in models and instrumentation based on abstraction of discourses structures called intentions in a way to create audiovisual media document

Streszczenie:
This research has found that the field of international blended learning (BL) is prepared for stronger communication and collaboration. Collaboration is currently limited, and regions vary greatly in terms of citations. However, BL is growing worldwide and each region has much to offer to the community. Greater collaboration among researchers and practitioners can be profitable regardless of location. In the first article the authors compared the top cited BL articles to understand which articles from each region are the most cited, how the regions compare in terms of citations and which journals publish these highly cited articles. The authors used this data to construct a broad overview of the field as a whole and submit is as partial fulfillment of the literature review requirement. This research was designed by both authors and carried out by the first author with advice from the second author. In the second article the authors delved deeper into the top articles to discover and compare the topics and themes of the top articles on BL from different regions of the world. The authors examined methodological patterns, learner type, level of blend, terms for blending, and research questions in order to understand the research practices and topics of interest within the BL community. This article is also submitted as partial fulfillment of the literature review requirement for a master's degree in Instructional Psychology and Technology. This research was designed by both authors and carried out by the first author with advice from the second author. In the third article the authors sought to take a snapshot of the present state of blended learning. The authors drew conclusions from survey responses and interviews with current blended learning researchers and practitioners focused on BL around the world. This research was designed by both authors and carried out by the first author with advice from the second author and assistance from the third author. The first author conducted all interviews and made final decisions on coding and analysis, with input from the other authors.
