Streszczenie:
A number of previous studies have indicated that pathological gambling is often associated with depression. Equally, a number of theoretical models of pathological gambling have included depression as a key variable. Here we report a study of depression in pathological gamblers identified within a random sample of 1,615 adults living in the major cities of Galicia (northwest Spain). Pathological gamblers were identified on DSM–IV diagnostic criteria. Depression was evaluated with the Beck Depression Inventory, subjects being classified ‘depressive’ if they obtained a score of 18 or more. Of 19 pathological gamblers who completed the Beck Depression Inventory, 21% were depressive; by contrast, only 9% of the other subjects were depressive. The Beck scores of pathological gamblers were positively correlated with the severity of their addiction as indicated by the number of DSM–IV-specified symptoms reported.

Háttér: A különböző típusú szerencsejátékok elérhetősége folyamatosan nő Magyarországon. A kóros játékszenvedély terápiájával kapcsolatban kevés az elérhető szakirodalom, a szerencsejátékosok kezelése a legtöbb esetben a kémiai addikciók kezelésének irányelvei alapján történik. Jelenleg nincs olyan átfogó terápiás módszer kidolgozva, mely hatékonynak bizonyulna a kórkép kezelésében. Célkitűzések: Jelen tanulmány célja a főbb kezelési modellek vázlatos ismertetése, a szerencsejátékosok terápiájával kapcsolatos szakirodalom kritikai összefoglalása, és a szerzők néhány szerencsejátékosokkal kapcsolatos terápiás tapasztalatának megfogalmazása. Eredmények és következtetések: A különböző terápiás megközelítések képesek pozitív eredményeket felmutatni a szerencsejátékkal kapcsolatos problémák kezelésében. Érdemes megjegyezni, hogy a terápiás hatékonyságvizsgálatok a legtöbb esetben módszertani problémákkal jellemezhetőek, ezért egyértelmű következtetéseket nem vonhatunk le eredményeikből. A pszichodinamikus terápiák hasznossága mellett kiemelhető a kognitív-viselkedésterápiák eredményessége, valamint az önsegítő csoportok jelentősége. A spontán remisszió folyamatával kapcsolatban kevés tanulmányra támaszkodhatunk, melyek a spontán remisszió gyakoriságára hívják fel a figyelmet szerencsejáték függőségnél. A terápiás hatékonyságvizsgálatok alapján a kognitív-viselkedéslélektani terápiák a legsikeresebbek annak ellenére, hogy a terápiás ülések száma korlátozott és a kliensek gyakran munkafüzetek vagy instrukciós anyagok alapján dolgoznak.

Streszczenie:
Objective: The aim of this paper is to review the literature describing the hypothesised link between crime and pathological gambling and its relevance to arguments of diminished responsibility. Method: An attempt was made to include all publications in the psychiatry and psychology literature which made reference to pathological gambling and criminal behaviours. Given the limited research in this field, specific unpublished conference papers were also included in the review. Results: Evidence supports the contention that pathological gamblers are at high risk for committing criminal offences in order to maintain their habitual gambling behaviours. An antisocial personality disorder while acting to increase the risk factor is in itself an insufficient explanation for the observed link. As a result of the acceptance of pathological gambling as a psychiatric disorder, the judicial system is being increasingly confronted with an argument of diminished responsibility for gambling-related offences committed by pathological gamblers. Conclusion: A diagnosis of pathological gambling does not diminish legal responsibility but is a factor that should be considered in sentencing. Referral to psychiatric services reduces the risk of recidivism.

It is argued that two large groups of disorders can be distinguished in the field of psychopathology, (1) which divide between them the psychoses, neuroses and personality disorders; ( 2) the dynamics of which are those of Klein's paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, respectively; and (3) which are distinguished by nine basic contrasts in symptomatology and dynamics, all of which are expressive of the opposition self-centred/other-centred. These three hypotheses form the interpersonal model of psychopathology, and are supported by argument from works of Foulds, Jung, Abraham, Fairbairn, Klein, Angyal, Winnicott and Heidegger. It is suggested that the interpersonal model can facilitate the dialogue between psychoanalysis and phenomenology

Trauma and dissociation have been researched in many populations with a clear connection established between the two. This study further explored this connection in the difficult to study population of refugee children. They often are living in tumultuous settings with limited access. The study consisted of 45 children all of whom had been exposed to potentially traumatic events due to displacement. 26 of the children were male with 19 females and an age range from 6 years old to 14. 4 classroom teachers completed the Child Dissociative Checklist for up to ten of their students. The CDC was found to be reliable for this population (α = .903). Frequency statistics showed at least 40% of the sample scoring above the modified pathology score of 11 and the most often endorsed items focused on emotional labiality, memory and denial as primary dissociation responses. Hierarchical linear regression was utilized to determine the relationship of nature of gender, age and time since displacement on the development of pathological dissociative response. The study found that gender was an insignificant predictor of dissociation (F (1,44) = .184, p > .05), but together, age and times since displacement were significantly correlated to higher reports of dissociation. After controlling for age, time since displacement did not have a significant effect on dissociative response (R2 = .178, p > .05) refugee children living in camps in Lebanon.

Streszczenie:
Hand gestures were coded from videotaped interviews of male prison inmates divided into high (P), medium (M) and low (NP) groups based on the Psychopathy Checklist (Hare, 1980). Compared with other groups, psychopaths were found to make more beats (a type of nonreferential language-related gesture) when speaking about their family background but not when speaking about their criminal history. There were no group differences in the use of other language gestures or nonlanguage gestures. The results are discussed in terms of speech encoding difficulties that psychopaths may experience in relation to content that involves concepts or words that are abstract or emotion-laden. The results are consistent with language research, and suggest that psychopaths differ from others in the processing and use of language.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:

This study examined the relationship of adaptive and pathological (grandiose and vulnerable) expressions of narcissism to attachment style and the capacity for reflective functioning (RF). Narcissism serves a relevant personality construct in clinical theory, social psychology and psychiatry but remains inconsistently defined across these disciplines. Theoretical accounts support the notion that attachment difficulties and maladaptive patterns of mentally representing self and others serve as the substrates for narcissistic pathology but are less pronounced in adaptive narcissism. A multiple regression analysis was conducted in a college student sample of 345 participants applying a cross-sectional, survey design. It was hypothesized that pathological narcissism (grandiose or vulnerable) is associated with higher degrees of attachment-related anxiety and avoidance and lower levels of RF than is adaptive narcissism.

Results: With respect to convergent validity, measures of adaptive and pathological narcissism exhibited a differential pattern of correlations to general psychopathology, thereby supporting the notion that distinct constructs crystallize within narcissism's heterogeneity. Multiple regression analysis confirmed the two-component structure of pathological narcissism representing narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability. Narcissistic vulnerability significantly predicted higher levels of attachment anxiety, an effect that remained after controlling for narcissistic grandiosity and adaptive narcissism. In contrast, adaptive narcissism significantly predicted lower levels of attachment anxiety. Contrary to expectation, this effect was not observed for avoidant attachment, i.e. pathological narcissism was not found to be a stronger predictor of avoidant attachment than adaptive narcissism. This study further found that pathological narcissism was not a stronger predictor of poor reflective functioning than was adaptive narcissism. In sum, these findings illustrate how overall psychopathology and attachment anxiety vary across the three narcissistic expressions, thereby weakening narcissism's clinical utility as currently defined in the DSM-5. Theoretical and treatment implications are also reviewed.

Streszczenie:
Research indicates that eating disorders and anxiety disorders frequently co-occur. The prevalence of anxiety disorders amongst anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa samples has been reported in a number of investigations. Despite the significant number of research papers investigating the comorbidity between eating disorders and anxiety disorders, many are plagued by methodological problems, limiting the usefulness of findings. Furthermore, there is a significant lack of research examining the prevalence of eating disorders among anxiety patients, and as a result, the frequency of eating disorder pathology among patients presenting to specialty anxiety clinics is unclear. The current research investigated the prevalence of comorbid eating and anxiety disorders amongst 152 women presenting for either eating disorder treatment or anxiety disorder treatment. The prevalence of anxiety disorders was determined from a sample of 100 women presenting for inpatient and outpatient eating disorder treatment. The prevalence of eating disorders was determined from a sample of 52 women presenting for outpatient treatment of an anxiety disorder. The current study found that 65% of women with eating disorders also met criteria for at least one comorbid anxiety disorder. Furthermore, 69% reported the onset of the anxiety disorder to precede the onset of the eating disorder. Of the anxiety disorders diagnosed, Social Phobia was most frequently diagnosed (42%) followed by PTSD (26%), GAD (23%), OCD (5%), Panic/Ag (3%) and Specific Phobia (2%). We also found that 13.5% of women presenting for anxiety treatment also met criteria for a comorbid eating disorder. The results of this study suggest that the prevalence of eating and anxiety disorder comorbidity is high. It is hoped that the present research will have significant etiological and therapeutic implications and further the understanding of the development and maintenance of eating disorder pathology.

Streszczenie:
The issue of psychological assistance strategies, which must be implemented to respond to the needs of the oncological patient, represents a relevant interest in medical psychology. The paper focuses on the area of emotional and psychological needs of the cancer patient, in the advanced stage of the disease, as precisely these types of needs are the most present in this phase and the most difficult to satisfy against the background of the difficulties to express and recognize them, for that it does not manifest itself through specific and clear bodily sensations, detected by clinical parameters or laboratory analyses. Therefore, as future psychologists, it is important to identify these needs and try to fulfill them, because they affect the quality of life and the physical condition of the person, also resulting from the fact that man is a complex system, which is why it must be treated through a bio-psycho-socio-spiritual approach, to take care of him in a holistic manner. And since the human being is a set of complex processes, which gives us the self-understanding that we cannot focus only on the pathological and biological aspects, it is necessary to concern ourselves with the person and not only with the disease.

Streszczenie:
The World Health Organization (WHO) states on its website, the one dedicated to the regional office of the Middle East, that there are more than 1000 million disabled people across the globe, which represents approximately 15% of the entire world population i.e. nearly 1 in every 7 people is disabled. It also indicates that the number of the people who suffer from a handicap is on a continuous rise, mainly because of the aging population as well as the exacerbation of chronic illnesses. Moreover, the same organization informs that although this matter is of an extreme seriousness, there is in fact a severe lack of awareness and an unavailability of the necessary scientific information related to this topic. As a matter of fact, there is only a small number of documents that display collections of studies about the policies and responses that the countries have put in place in order to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The data related to disabilities and disabled people points out to an evident lack of concern, on a global scale, when it comes to this particular group that happens to include millions of people all throughout the world. However, and despite the efforts and resources dedicated to accommodate and rehabilitate handicapped people, we still, unfortunately, have a long way to go before we can reach this desired goal. So, does it mean that all these efforts were in vain? In this communication, we will attempt to answer this question through a presentation of the historical evolution of opinions about the meaning of disability and special needs in light of the recent scientific advancements and its impact on the social perception, by shedding the light on the symbolism of the phenomenon of abuse and bullying targeting individuals with special needs. This historical examination shows a clear quantum leap when it comes to the treatment and attitude towards people with special needs, a leap that coincides with the advancement that the scientific research and the pathological classification in the psychology have witnessed in the beginning of the twentieth century. Following these classifications, a number of legal renewals took place, which provided disabled people with several rights that guarantee their protection. Therefore, we can determine that there is indeed a tangible change, albeit the fact that there is definitely and undoubtedly more room for improvement in this regard. Consequently, the denunciations we witness today regarding the abuse and mistreatment of people with disabilities is in fact a product of the collective awareness and the public acknowledgment of the radical shift regarding the conceptual and practical notion of disability. Which in turn, predicts a better and a more prosperous future for a group of people who are in dire need of change.
