Paul, Lena. "Reflecting upon the profession : minority ethnic men in clinical psychology". Thesis, University of East London, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532960.

Streszczenie:
It is widely acknowledged that within the clinical psychology profession there are disproportionate numbers of white middle class females. One of the least represented groups is minority ethnic males. This gives rise to concerns that within an increasingly diverse population the profession is failing to represent the community that it serves. The profession has been unsuccessful in attracting and recruiting men from this group and there is no known literature in this area. An exploratory study was conducted which sought to understand the experiences of these individuals within the clinical psychology profession working within the NHS. Participants all self defined as 'minority ethnics' and were recruited by opportunistic sampling. Interviews were conducted either face-to-face or via a telephone. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was chosen to analyse transcripts of nine interviews of people broadly from 'Black', 'Asian' and 'dual heritage' backgrounds. The mean age was 43.8 years with an average post qualification experience of 13 years. The interviews covered four main topics: factors influencing career decision, training experience, current experiences within the profession and the profession's impact on the self. Three superordinate themes were identified: 'Values and expectations'; Difference and discrimination' and 'Into the profession'. There was no monolithic presentation of issues of gender. Feelings of difference and, 'Otherness' were shared by all. The idea of multiple and shifting identities was used to account for the shifting subject positions and identifications involved in being both Black, male and psychologist. Further research could investigate this group experience using a Foucaldian Discourse Analysis. However, clinical psychology postgraduate training courses might consider inclusion of these topics as part of a curriculum on multi-cultural competency to raise awareness to trainees and clinicians of the next generation.

In this thesis, the author investigates the Process Work contributions to men and power. The theories of men and power are researched and how Process Work and its applications, including the concept of rank, are useful adjuncts to the existing theories of power are demonstrated. The inquiry includes heuristic, qualitative and subjective methods. It is recognised that men are a diverse group, and the rank held is important if it is to be used well. Those who suffer from the poor use of rank can often provide valuable information about the effects of poor use of rank.Power by itself is limited. At moments such as when we are close to death power becomes less relevant. A deeper vision emerges related to the greater meaning of our lives and the legacy we have in our depths. It is a vision for all of us to use the rank we have to further the deepest values and aspirations of our lives, to the benefit of all living beings.

Streszczenie:

This research explores what happens to some men when, despite the best of intentions and heroic efforts on all sides, a marriage ends in divorce. Using a blend of alchemical hermeneutics and hermeneutic phenomenology, this qualitative study explores the lived experience of 5 heterosexual men who suffered psychologically in divorce. Divorce was examined from Freudian, Jungian, and archetypal perspectives using the depth psychological lenses of alchemy, mythology, and fairy tale. A hybrid method of qualitative analysis was created that incorporated the use of psychodrama to analyze the data. From the results of this study, the journey through divorce for suffering men can be seen as being comprised of 3 stages: a Coming Storm, a Tempest, and an Aftermath. The intrapsychic destruction experienced by many men in divorce was also viewed as an attempt at an undoing of the hieros gamos, or sacred marriage. From the results of this investigation, it is further postulated that such a divorce may be a psychological impossibility. The author’s experience as a divorced man informs his observations and conclusions.

This study assessed the differences between men in therapy and clinical and nonclinical samples reported in previous research. It identified the personality types of men currently in therapy using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). It was expected that responses to the MBTI and identified types would differ from nonclinical and clinical samples previously reported. This distinguished and described those men seeking therapy from those who did not. The 135 men sampled were drawn from a variety of therapeutic settings in southern Arizona, including private and public hospitals, non-profit and profit agencies, and individual therapists. All subjects were 18 years of age or older and voluntarily agreed to participate. Men in therapy differed from both the general population and the population of men in psychiatric hospitals. They were more Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Perceiving than the general population and more Extroverted, Intuitive, and Perceiving than the men in psychiatric hospitals.

Streszczenie:
This study examined the relation between stigma and reporting of intimate partner violence (IPV) in a sample of men who have sex with men (MSM). It was hypothesized that enacted stigma would result in lower reporting of IPV and that the type of IPV would moderate the relationship between enacted stigma and reporting. Using an online survey, we measured IPV (physical, psychological, and sexual violence) and stigma (perceived, enacted, and internalized). Participants (N = 46) were asked if they had ever experienced any of those forms of violence, as well as if they had ever reported the violence through an online survey. They were then asked how likely they would be to report the violence if it happened again in the future. Responses were analyzed using logistical regression with moderation to determine if a) enacted stigma was associated with lower reporting of intimate partner violence and if b) type of violence moderated stigma and reporting, such that physical violence would have the strongest relation between stigma and reporting of IPV. Results showed that enacted stigma was associated with more IPV reporting across all types of violence: physical (coefficient: 1.539, p<.0005), sexual (coefficient: .999, p<.05), and psychological (coefficient: 1.203, p<.005). Results of testing the moderating role of violence type on the relationship between enacted stigma and IPV were non-significant for all types of violence. In conclusion, the more enacted stigma that was experienced, the more reporting occurred. In addition, type of violence did not moderate the relation between enacted stigma and reporting of intimate partner violence.

Little research, however, has critically investigated the difficulties involved in the creation of community interventions in this area. In addition, few men's only HIV/AIDS support groups exist and a relatively modest amount of literature surrounds the subject. This thesis, aims to investigate the struggles and tensions involved in the formation of men's only HIV/AIDS support groups.

Streszczenie:
This research was undertaken with a view to advancing scholarship on the production and reproduction of notions of masculinity through everyday experiences of violence in the domestic sphere. In particular, the researcher sought to explicate constructions of masculinity in men’s narratives of their experiences of violence in the homeplace. The participants in this study constituted a fairly homogenous sample in terms of age, education, geographic location, and socio-economic status. A homogenous sample was purposefully selected because it aided an analysis of the phenomenon under study without diversions from extraneous variables. Data was collected from semi-structured, personal, in-depth, face-to-face interviews with eight young men. In these interviews participants were asked to recall and to talk about one particular experience of domestic violence that they witnessed or that had happened to them in the past. Photo elicitation was used as a reflective technique aimed at facilitating recall and discussion during the interviews. Data was analysed by means of a discourse analysis. The main findings of this research were that the participants grew up in communities where a more traditional hegemonic masculinity was commonplace and where violence as a means of exerting control was associated with being a ‘real man’. The participants did however question this notion of masculinity as a result of their experiences, particularly when they perceived the violence that they had been exposed to as excessive or unwarranted.

The purpose of the study is to examine the association between impulsivity, substance use, and condom use in men who have sex with men. Specifically, this study assessed whether self-reported substance use and impulsivity measures predict condom use in men who reportedly engage in sex with other men. This study, also explored the interrelations among impulsivity measures including behavioral and paper-and-pencil assessments and identified, the possible underlying dimensions of impulsivity tapped by these measures Results did not demonstrate a significant relationship between substance use and high risk sexual behavior. There was however a significant correlation between risky sexual behaviors and alcohol consumption. Limitations of the study and future directions for multiculturally competent health psychology research are explored.

Regan, Lisa. "'Men who are men and women who are women' : fascism, psychology and feminist resistance in the work of Winifred Holtby". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2005. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/2459/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Winifred Holtby was a novelist, journalist and feminist, writing in the 1920s and 1930s. This thesis focuses on her feminist resistance to the fashion for sexual division in interwar Britain. She reads it as a social and political backlash against women’s equal rights that seeks to drive women out of the workplace and back into the home. In Holtby’s view, the popularisation of Freud and the growing appeal of fascism contribute to this backlash by stressing women’s primary role as wives and mothers. For Holtby, Sir Oswald Mosley, the leader of the British Union of Fascists, sums up this fashion for sexual division when he declares in 1932, ‘we want men who are men and women who are women’. Previous scholarship has focused on Holtby’s work in dialogue with her friend and fellow feminist, Vera Brittain. This thesis adopts a more panoramic perspective to consider Holtby’s work in the context of other feminist contemporaries and in the context of feminist intellectual history. Each chapter examines how Holtby draws inspiration from a figure in feminist history in order to challenge the influences of psychology and fascism on attitudes to women between the wars. Holtby declared that Mary Wollstonecraft’s A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) was the ‘bible of the woman’s movement’ and the first chapter examines Wollstonecraft’s influence on Holtby’s feminist thought. The second chapter considers Holtby’s defence of the spinster against interwar prejudice that castigated the spinster as sexually frustrated and psychological abnormal. By subverting Charlotte Brontë’s romance narratives for an interwar ‘feminine middlebrow’ readership, Holtby valorises women’s work in the community. The third chapter addresses the fascist veneration of motherhood, analysing how Holtby recognises and assimilates the feminist potential of Alfred Adler’s theory of Individual Psychology to her anti-fascist critique.

This quantitative study examines how attachment and masculinity influence men in their participation in social groups and support or therapy groups as measured by the ECR-RS (Fraley, Brumbaugh, Heffernan, & Vicary, 2011) and the MRNI-SF (Levant, Hall, & Rankin, 2013). An online survey was given to 308 U.S. male adults asking questions about their attachment to their primary partner, their family of origin, social groups they participate in, support or therapy groups they participate in, and their endorsement of traditional masculine gender norms. The results from this study suggest the following: that men will have the same level of attachment to their family of origin as they do to both romantic dyadic relationships and to social groups they participate in, men are more securely attached the more they participate in groups, more traditionally masculine men are more drawn to competitive type social groups, more traditionally masculine men tend to have a more avoidant attachment to groups, and masculinity endorsement doesn’t affect men’s level of participation in groups. Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis focuses on the psychology of men, and in particular the factors that are associated with their disclosure and help-seeking experiences in two particular contexts: following sexual abuse and when experiencing a psychological difficulty. This thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 is a systematic review of the literature, investigating the barriers to disclosure and help-seeking for male survivors of sexual abuse. Five barriers were identified: unwillingness to acknowledge the abuse, the nature of the abuse and abuser factors, perceptions of sexual orientation, stigma and shame, and mistrust of others and services. These barriers are discussed within the context of masculinity. Clinical implications are discussed, such as the importance of training in the sexual abuse of men for professional staff groups. Chapter 2 is a vignette based empirical study which explores factors associated with help-seeking for psychological difficulties in men. The study used the theory of planned behaviour as a guiding framework in order to test a number of hypotheses. Data were collected using an online survey and participants were men aged 18-65, living in the UK, who were recruited via social media. Perceived behavioural control and attitudes toward seeking professional psychological help were significant variables within the theory of planned behaviour model. Men were most likely to endorse seeking help from their intimate partners and GPs and least likely from helplines and religious leaders. Clinical implications are discussed and areas of future research recommended. Chapter 3 is a reflective paper which discusses how the topic of the thesis originated. This paper reflects on the experiences of being a male trainee clinical psychologist in a predominantly female profession, as well as in relation to carrying out research on male psychology. The paper concludes with final thoughts about how the work started in this thesis can be continued post-qualification.

Streszczenie:

This study hypothesized that differences in sex behaviors of men and women with sex addiction would mirror sex behaviors differences characteristic of men and women in general. A sample of 45 persons with sex addiction was obtained from social media websites. A validated sexual addiction questionnaire and gender-specific sex behavior questionnaire (GBQ) were administered. Results confirmed that all subjects had sex addiction. Sex addiction scores for men were universally higher than for women across all domains of sex addiction; all differences were statistically significant. Of 22 GBQ questions, 16 trended in the predicted direction; six did not. The proportion of endorsements in line with the hypothesis was significantly different from chance, suggesting that differences in sex behaviors of men and women with sex addiction mirror those of men and women in general. Four findings differed from the hypothesis, however. First, men with sex addiction had fewer relationships at one time than women. Second, men were less likely than women to seek escort or phone services, pay for sexually explicit phone calls, or use personal ads to find partners. Third, men and women equally endorsed being more likely to have sex with someone they know rather than anonymous sex partners. Fourth, women more often reported having one-night stands than men. These gender-specific behaviors deviate from past research, suggesting that men and women with sex addiction may choose some sexual behaviors atypical of their gender. Cultural and technological changes that may be impacting these novel sex behaviors were explored.

Cryder, Chad R. "How Gay Men Foster Marital Success| A Grounded Theory". Thesis, Saybrook University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10828158.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:

When marriage equality became legal in 2015, more gay men started getting married. With minimal research on qualities leading to perceived marital success, mental health professionals could not offer guidance on strengthening marital satisfaction for these couples. Further, gay men had few gay role models for marital success to provide guidance and insights. To help address this lack of research, this dissertation focused on how gay men fostered marital success.

In this study, constructivist grounded theory was utilized to flexibly examine and analyze the qualities that lead to perceived marital success for eight married gay men from across the United States. Two rounds of interviews were conducted to gather narrative data and distinguish categories and properties that captured the success characteristics identified through participants lived experiences.

Findings indicate that gay men feel successful when their relationship needs and feelings of belongingness are satisfied, and they have the ability to dexterously apply relationship skills to build a strong relationship framework while working as a team to overcome potential barriers. Parenting, feelings of security, and negotiating sexual agreements were important relationship experiences for these couples.

Mental health professionals who are looking to help married gay men should consider the individual histories, environmental supports available, communication style, and the dyadic aspirations for these couples. Future research should focus on ethnic and socioeconomic diversity, and researchers should investigate marital success for couples whose marriages were not preceded by ceremonial commitments or legally binding partnerships. These parameters would expand the scope of generalizability.

Josephson, Gordon J. "A model of depressive symptoms in gay men". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29119.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Existing research suggests that gay men may be more vulnerable to depression than are heterosexual men, and that gender-related personality traits may be important in understanding this vulnerability. In the present study the association between two gender-related personality traits (agency and unmitigated communion) and depressive symptoms was examined in an Internet sample of 510 gay identified men, aged 18 years or older. Potential mediators of this association were also examined including: recalled peer harassment, interpersonal behavior, and self-discrepancies in the gender-related personality trait of agency. Participants completed the Extended Personal Attributes Questionnaire (EPAQ), the Unmitigated Communion Scale, the victim subscale from the Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire Revised (worded retrospectively), the Checklist of Interpersonal Transactions Revised, and the Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Self-discrepancy was calculated by repeating the agency subscale of the EPAQ from the perspective of ideal self and subtracting the actual score from the ideal score. Zero-order correlations indicated that among gay men who were less agentic than their ideal, the gender-related personality traits of agency and unmitigated communion were associated with depressive symptoms, as were recalled peer harassment, interpersonal behavior characterized as unassured and submissive, and self-discrepancies in agency. Two models were tested with half the sample and a respecified model was validated with the second half. The final model indicated that when all variables were considered jointly, agency and unmitigated communion were not directly related to depressive symptoms but rather, the effects of agency and unmitigated communion were mediated by unassured and submissive interpersonal behavior, and the effect of agency was also mediated by self-discrepancies in agency (p < .05). Thus, how the participants interacted with close others, and the extent that they were not as agentic as they wished, were more important in predicting their depressive symptoms than were the gender-related personality traits of agency and unmitigated communion. The final model also indicated that recalled peer harassment has both a direct impact on depressive symptoms and an indirect impact on depressive symptoms through unassured and submissive interpersonal behavior. Implications for future research, anti-bullying initiatives, and interventions with depressed gay men are discussed.

Streszczenie:
A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used to research men's experience with attempting to achieve an 'ideal' masculine body. The current North American 'ideal' male body, media and cultural influences, a continuum of exercise and dieting behaviours, steriod use, addictions, eating disorders were presented as factors that may provide insight into this phenomenon. Eight male research participants were interviewed in regards to their experiences with attempting to achieve an 'ideal' masculine body. A dramaturgical life story approach to interviewing was ued. A follow-up interview was conducted to allow each research participant to comment on the emerging themes shared by the researcher. The nine themes that emerged from the participants' stories are: (1) I am not good enough, (2) judging genetics, (3) spiraling into obsession, (4) extreme commitment, (5)join the club, (6) no one understands me, (7)control, (8) it's all an optical illusion, and (9) overcoming the obsession. The results of this thesis combined with the literature suggest the following three conclusions. First, men who attempt to achieve an ideal masculine body may be vulnerable to external messages about their bodies. Second, pre-existing personality traits and/or mental health issues may contribute to this vulnerability. Third, some men may attempt to deal with complex mental health issues by taking their 'frustrations' and 'aggression' out in the gym, rather than by seeking counselling. The implications for helping professionals are discussed. The limitations of this approach are acknowledged and directions for future research are suggested.

Streszczenie:
Research into transitions which explore the personal changes of those undergoing them, especially men, are still rare, particularly in regards to a changing sense of self and life world. Research into the movement of men out of hierarchy, the dominant structures of work institutions in the western world, is rarer still. Using hermeneutic and phenomenological frameworks, this study tracks the journeys of six men by in-depth interviews and discussions as they move out of hierarchical structures to recreate their work and, in varying degrees, themselves. As a means of looking beyond events, and for their metaphoric and philosophic perspectives, the Hero and Phoenix myths are used to further explore levels of meaning identified within the transition processes. Drawing on the work of Jung, Bridges, Neville, Campbell, O’Connor and Gareth Hill, the six stages into which I have organised the transitions are compared to the six key phases of the Phoenix myth. A Jungian framework informs the interpretation of the underlying significances demonstrated in the men’s processes of regeneration. The men’s individual responses to their transitions are also identified and described, from subjective and proactive perspectives. Changes in the men’s self perceptions and their changing relationships to authority, brought about by their shifting loci of control, are documented. Analysis of the stages most likely to be suitable for proactive intervention (as conscious or organised responses to the process), are indicated. Primary and secondary preconditions for successful transitions out of hierarchies are postulated. The men’s self-reflections illuminate experiences of uncertainty and clarity, confidence and exploration, compartmentalisation and synthesis. The role of an ‘inner voice’ (an unchanging core identity) and their changing relationship with these aspects of Self, is articulated as critical factors in the men’s ‘successful’ transitions. Integral to this research is the concept that the power of an individual’s experience can inform those who share a similar experience. Therefore applications of the research, and strategies to manage and facilitate transitions out of hierarchical environments, are suggested. This thesis is written in support of my hypothesis that transitions can be mapped; that they are journeys on several levels of personal and practical transformation; and that to proactively engage with transition processes requires not only an understanding of the stages of the process itself, but also an understanding that changes in self-perception and self-relationship will also occur for those undergoing them.

Streszczenie:
This study was conducted to examine the problems and coping strategies of urban divorced men at the time of divorce (during the first month--Time 1) and six months later (Time 2). Both pre-determined coping strategies (formed as a result of previous research), and newly generated coping strategies for the target population were examined. Three independent variables-age, anxiety, and sex role orientation--were tested to ascertain their effect on degree of helpfulness of the coping strategies.Courthouse records were examined during a six-and-three-quarters-month time period in two counties in Indiana. The names of the men who had decrees granted during this time span were obtained. This resulted in 187 phone contacts in which the purpose of the study was explained and the research instruments briefly described. There were 164 men who volunteered to participate. They were sent a research packet consisting of a cover letter, a participant contact form, the instruments (a background questionnaire, Questionnaire II--a psychological adjustment scale, the Family Coping Inventory, the Maferr inventory of Masculine Values, and the Checklist of Problems and Concerns), and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. There were 123 men who returned the research packet at Time 1 and 84 at Time 2. Multivariate analysis and a correlated t-test were used to test the research hypotheses.FindingsSeven hypotheses were rejected at the .05 level. Significant differences were found:1. In the perceived helpfulness of pre-determined (and generated) coping strategies between older and younger men at Time 2.2. In the perceived helpfulness of pre-determined (and generated) coping strategies between higher and lower anxiety at Time 1.3. In the perceived helpfulness of pre-determined (and generated) coping strategies between higher and lower anxiety at Time 2.4. Between Time 1 and Time 2 means on the problem factors a. Between the means of Factor 1--Loneliness at Time 1 and Time 2.b. Between the means of Factor 5--Control and Competence at Time 1 and Time 2.Conclusions1. All divorced men do not fit the "self-confident swinging bachelor" stereotype. Problems related to social relationships seem to be a major cause of concern at both Time 1 and Time 2, as is loneliness. Loneliness decreases significantly, however, at Time 2.2. The results confirm the existence of stable problem factors over time.3. It appears that there are relatively stable coping strategies found across time and populations. Those found most often are concerned with: Maintaining Family Stability Establishing Independence Dating and Socializing with Friends Leisure ActivitiesContact with RelataivesDivorce Related ActivitiesSeeking Understanding Through Personal and Professional Relationships Expressing Self Community Involvement4. It would be beneficial to adopt a single coping strategy framework and impose this structure on subjects in future research studies rather than generate new sets of strategies. Degrees of helpfulness could be ascertained while providing a consistent foundation for comparison.5. Anxiety level seems to be the most important independent variable in this study in perceived degree of helpfulness. Age also plays a role.

Prejudice against men may result in emotional distress, interpersonal conflict, and impairments in a man’s view-of-self. It can be a contributing factor for explaining increased substance use and suicide by men, as well as rates of violence against men. Awareness of the prejudices men may face allows clinicians to form better alliances with their clients by helping them understand the feelings and perspectives of men who experience various forms of prejudice. This dissertation begins with an overview of the general causes of prejudice and a summary of the mechanisms that maintain a prejudice’s social acceptability. It then provides a taxonomy of different forms of the prejudices men face, as well as the mechanisms that maintain the social acceptability of prejudice against men. Finally, it describes examples of prejudice against men, applying the taxonomy put forth in this dissertation.

Streszczenie:

The present study examined the influence of UV photography (seeing an image of one's skin damage) and receiving choice-promoting sun protection information on college men's sun protection cognitions. In particular, the aim of this dissertation was to study whether promoting personal choice (by providing information on sun protection behaviors that emphasizes choices and options) enhanced the impact of UV photography on men's sun protection cognitions. The cognitions assessed in this study were informed by the Prototype Willingness Model: conditional perceived vulnerability to skin cancer and photoaging, attitudes toward sun protection, prototypes of the typical young adult male who does and does not protect his skin from the sun, willingness to engage in sun protection and risk behaviors, and intentions to engage in sun protection behaviors, sun-risk behaviors, and skin examinations. An additional goal of the study was to examine whether the promotion of choice in the context of UV photography would be particularly influential among men who report high levels of conformity to masculine norms. Therefore, masculinity was explored as a moderator of experimental effects on cognitions. Male young adults completed an initial online survey assessing background information, baseline cognitions, and masculinity, before participating in the experimental portion of the study. During the experiment, participants were randomly assigned to one of six conditions that varied on two variables: (1) whether or not they received their UV photograph (yes versus no), and (2) the type of sun protection information that they received (no information, information that framed sun protection behaviors as recommendations to follow, or information that framed these behaviors as individual choices to make). Following the experimental manipulations, participants completed a second computer-based survey assessing sun protection cognitions. Results showed several significant main effects of UV photography, thus partially supporting results of prior studies that have found this intervention approach to be effective. Perceptions of choice correlated with several cognitions. However, the information condition manipulation checks, main effects, and interactions with UV photography provided only limited evidence for the hypothesis that receiving choice-promoting information would enhance the impact of UV photography, and no evidence that choice information is an effective standalone intervention. A significant three-way interaction between masculinity, UV photography, and the information conditions revealed a pattern similar to one found in a prior study - that the conditional perceived vulnerability of high masculine men was more affected by the interventions than was the conditional perceived vulnerability of less masculine men. There was a similar UV photography effect among high masculine men on protective prototypes, although additional moderation analyses showed inconsistent patterns. Overall, the results involving the information condition and masculinity were inconsistent; however, they suggest future directions for research on sun protection and risk cognitions, as well as strategies for informing young men about sun protection.

The present study examined older male adults' lived experiences with pet ownership. There is robust literature on older adults and the human-animal bond, but presently there are no qualitative phenomenological studies that focus solely on older physically impaired males who live alone and the relationships they have with their pets. With the guiding framework of biopsychosocial theory and using intensive interviews, 10 older males (65+) who suffered from some physical impairment discussed the relationships they have with their pets, and how their companion animals affect their physical, emotional, and social health. All interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed for themes. The results showed that the participants believed they could care for their pet despite their physical limitations. The themes and subthemes that emerged from the interviews were companionship, responsibility, plan for death of owner, routine, focus on animal instead of self, physical benefits despite physical limitations, worry about falls, emotional support, and social connections because of the pet. The present study provides new information about changes in the social behaviors of the older male adult in relation to his pet, where the pet aids the individual in relating to other people. The research results may benefit researchers, healthcare workers, and geriatricians who work with the population of older adult, physically impaired, males. The results demonstrate the need for understanding the relationship of the older male adult and his pet and suggests that pets may help the older males increase their socialization.

This study was designed to examine psychology graduate students' attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. It was hypothesized that the following variables would predict participants' attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women: participant gender, amount of client contact with gay men and lesbian women, and gender role attitudes. Additionally, a measure of social desirability was included to investigate the validity of responses. Data were analyzed by conducting an independent t-test, a correlated t-test, and hierarchical multiple regression. Results indicated that gay men were viewed more negatively than were lesbian women. As expected, participants' gender role attitudes significantly predicted their attitudes toward gay men and lesbian women. Contrary to predicted outcomes, results indicated that neither participant gender nor client contact predicted attitudes toward homosexuality. Finally, results suggested that participants were not engaging in socially desirable responding. Implications of this study for research, theory, and practice are discussed.

The present investigation was an online quantitative study that examined the associations between religion-based homonegative messages, internalized homonegativity, depressive symptoms, and sexual HIV risk behavior among a nationally recruited sample of 428 Black men who have sex with men (BMSM). The men in the sample had a mean age of 34, primarily resided the Southeastern region of the United States and identified as African American and gay. A series of hierarchal multiple regression and binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to test a path model that linked religion-based homonegative messages with sexual HIV risk behavior. Religion-based homonegative messages were found to be significantly associated with internalized homonegativity; internalized homonegativity was found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms; and depressive symptoms were found to be significantly associated with sexual HIV risk behavior. The implications of these findings for mental health professionals, researchers, HIV prevention workers, and clergy are discussed.

Streszczenie:

An essential aspect of discerning how men can become effective partners in reaching gender equity in the U.S., is to understand how men perceive their own masculinity. In consensus with Wanger (2011), I believe that promoting men's' healthy masculinity development is a feminist act and an act of social justice. Within the scope of social science research it is of extreme significance to study men as men as they were often "everybody" and effectually "nobody" (Kimmel & Davis, 2011). This study adds to and highlights importance of research on men and masculinities. Selecting an often privileged and significant subculture of men, this case study surveyed 27 White evangelical college-aged men (WECM) of whom five participated in an in-depth semi-structure phenomenological-based interview at a single faith-based university. Based on the Subjective Masculine Experiences model (Wong et al., 2011) the researcher focused on how these men made "sense of their masculinity by connecting their life experiences [to dimensions] of masculine norms and ideology" (Wong et al., 2011, p. 238). The participants were asked to attribute levels of psychological stress to each dimension. Data gathered clustered into seven salient dimensions for this population: Responsibility, Family, Family- Provider, Faith and Religion, Emotional Toughness, Physical Body and Resistance. Analysis revealed that stress was associated with all of the dimensions, especially with Family-Provider. This paper provides the context for this study, its philosophical framework, and discussions on its limitations and implications for practice and future action.

Recently, some men have taken their wives' last names upon marriage rather than following tradition. The goal of this study was to examine the attitudes that men and women have toward these nontraditional men. Ideological hegemony and social identity theory comprised the framework for examining participants' beliefs. A survey first elicited participants' extant sexist beliefs about men and the characteristics of a nontraditional man compared to a traditional man. An open-ended question further explored participants' opinions. The results indicated that benevolent sexism influences respondents' attitudes towards nontraditional men and that most respondents view nontraditional men as more nurturing and committed to their marriage than traditional men. The results further revealed a dichotomy of positive and negative attitudes towards nontraditional men indicating that society's feelings about nontraditional men are changing.

This study explored how gender expressions were portrayed in the narratives of gay men who view themselves as non-masculine. An adapted life story interview was conducted with seven participants between the ages of 20 and 47 years. Life stories were analysed using content analysis. The study found that non-masculinity was defined in different ways and that social context, including threat, impacted on gender expression. Non-masculinity was strongly associated with male homosexuality. Homophobic verbal and physical abuse was portrayed alongside negative appraisals of non-masculinity. This may be indicative of internalised anti-effeminacy values. Marginalisation in gay communities was also portrayed, including romantic rejection. Intersections of gender-expression and ethnicity or age were important in evaluations of sexual attractiveness. Conversely, masculinity was often eroticised or regarded as aspirational. Positive qualities associated with non-masculinity included expressiveness, humour and flexibility in working with power demonstrations of others. These reinforce the assertion that effeminate and androgynous men bypass facets of gender-role conflict.

Gynecomastia is the proliferation of breast tissue in men. The purpose of this study was to compare psychological functioning across three groups of participants: treatment seeking men with gynecomastia, non treatment seeking men with gynecomastia, and men without gynecomastia. Though very little research has been done with this population, some research suggests poor psychological outcomes of gynecomastia. MANCOVA was used to test differences in psychological functioning across the three groups, and multiple regression was used to predict quality of life from psychological variables. Significant differences emerged between groups, with men with gynecomastia reporting worse psychological functioning. Additionally, no theoretical model for body image currently exists for men with gynecomastia. As such, the Tripartite Influence Model of Body Image was examined in this population through used of mediation analyses. Results confirmed partial support of this model for this population. This study was the first to examine treatment seeking status as a potential moderator of psychological functioning in men with gynecomastia and provides a theoretical model of body image to guide future research in this area.

Limited research describes the impact of ethnic groups and mores, especially those of Asian ethnicities, on the development of a global queering theory of sexual-identity development. The purpose of this grounded-theory study was to investigate the sexual-identity development of homosexuals in a non-Western collectivist culture and the extent of influence Western gay expatriates have on Chinese gay males' sexual-identity development. Five identity-development models served as the theoretical foundations of this study: Cass, Troiden, McCarn and Fassinger, D'Augelli, Gock, and the conceptual theory of global queering. NVivo aided in data organization, while coding and analysis were applied to the data. Individual, Skype interviews were held with 22 Chinese gay men. Participants explained how Western influence changed and was adapted to cultural norms even when no similarities emerged in the combining cultures. This research increases understanding of collectivist cultures and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities embedded in them. Understanding can create positive social change affecting the coming-out process, cultural diffusion, and same-sex couples in collectivist cultures. This study may spur a call for additional research into LGBT communities globally on sexual-identity development, particularly in relation to race and culture.

Streszczenie:
Social learning theory (Abrams & Niaura, 1987) assumes that individuals who lack effective coping strategies are more likely to drink in response to stressful situations. A review of the literature suggests that coping strategies have not typically been studied in the context of a specific theory of alcohol abuse. Consequently, little progress has been made in the understanding of possible links between alcohol abuse and the use of coping strategies. The primary objective of the present study was to assess whether drinking problems are associated with specific coping strategies. Coping strategies were defined according to the coping models of Lazarus and Folkman (1984), Tobin, Holroyd, Reynolds and Wigal (1989) and Rosenbaum (1980). It was hypothesized that students with drinking problems, in comparison to students with no drinking problems, would report engaging less in self-control and problem-focused strategies and more in avoidant coping strategies. A secondary objective was to determine whether these coping characteristics are associated with a family history of drinking problems, a risk factor for drinking problems. One hundred and eighty-nine male university students completed screening questionnaires about their alcohol and drug consumption and about the drinking behaviors of their family members. Students accepted for this study met the criteria for one of the following groups: (a) no family history of drinking problems (FH$-$) and no drinking problems, (b) FH$-$ and drinking problems, (c) family history of drinking problems (FH+) and no drinking problems, or (d) FH+ and drinking problems. Students completed self-report questionnaires on the reactions they experience in stressful situations. Self-control strategies were assessed by the Self-Control Schedule (Rosenbaum, 1980), and task-oriented and avoidant strategies by the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (Endler & Parker, 1990a). The last questionnaire was repeated for three different situations: (a) negative emotion, (b) interpersonal conflict, and (c) pressure to drink. Multivariate analyses of variance showed that students with drinking problems, in comparison to students without drinking problems, reported engaging less in self-control and task-oriented coping strategies. However, students with drinking problems did not report engaging more in avoidant strategies. This finding was contrasted with the results of other studies in which avoidant strategies were found to be related to alcohol abuse. Finally, there were no significant differences in coping between FH+ students and FH$-$ students. The potential relevance of coping to a model of alcohol abuse was discussed as well as its practical implications. For example, students with drinking problems might benefit from being taught task-oriented strategies and self-control skills, in addition to specific skills to reduce drinking.

There is an overrepresentation of gay men seeking treatment for eating disorders. This study investigated several factors that were thought to possibly impact the prevalence rates of gay men seeking treatment for eating disorders. The current study investigated the influence that gender role conflict, attitudes towards help seeking, symptom recognition, and media influence have on the prevalence of eating disorders. Nationwide participant recruitment was utilized to gather a sample that consisted of 86 heterosexual men and 75 gay men. Multivariate and univariate analyses of variance were utilized to examine the differences between gay and heterosexual men on the factors of interest. A significant difference was not found between gay and heterosexual men related to gender role conflict or media influence. However, a significant difference was found between heterosexual and gay men on measures of attitudes towards help seeking and symptom recognition. The results support that gender role conflict may have a limited role in the development of eating disorders in gay men and that mental health prevention and awareness within the gay community may be having a positive impact. Implications for the prevention and treatment of eating disorders are discussed as well as directions for future research.

Streszczenie:
Black Same-Gender Loving Men (BSGLM) are a population at the juncture of multiple marginalized identities, which may make it difficult to successfully form their identity due to experienced racism and heterosexism from communities to which they belong. Current paradigms of racial/ethnic and sexual identity do not fully capture the complexities of identity development among BSGLM. Moreover, there is scant literature available detailing what the process of identity development looks like among this population and which factors influence identity development among BSGLM. As such, the current study used an exploratory sequential mixed methods design to first discover what healthy identity looks like among BSGLM and which factors influence the process of developing a healthy identity. The study then empirically tested the elucidated factors in order to understand which of them influence identity development among BSGLM. First, a sample of BSGLM living in the U.S. (n = 19) were recruited via online and interviewed for the qualitative phase of the study about their identity development process. Using a Grounded Theory approach, the qualitative data revealed three unique components of healthy identity among BSGLM (e.g., self-affirmation, freedom from social conventions, having unconditional acceptance) and 13 factors that either inhibited or facilitated their identity development process. Qualitative findings were subsequently used to create a survey battery to quantitatively explore the relationships between the identified factors and components of healthy identity among another sample of BSGLM. The generated survey battery was administered to another sample of BSGLM living in the U.S. (n = 54) recruited from social media and organizations that service BSGLM. Bivariate correlations and multiple regression analyses examined inhibiting and facilitating factors as predictors of healthy identity. Findings revealed that minority stress-related factors were robust predictors of healthy identity. Specifically, rejection sensitivity from one’s family negatively predicted self-affirmation, frustration with concealing one’s sexual identity positively predicted freedom from social conventions, and experiencing threats/violence positively predicted unconditional acceptance. Results from the study may contribute to the refinement of identity development models among BSGLM and inform clinical interventions that bolster identity development among BSGLM such as transdiagnostic interventions that target minority stress and identity-related concerns.
