Streszczenie:
This article investigates the changing justifications of one of the hallmarks of orthodox psychoanalytic practice, the neutral and abstinent stance of the psychoanalyst, during the middle decades of the 20th century. To call attention to the shifting rationales behind a supposedly cold, detached style of treatment still today associated with psychoanalysis, explanations of the clinical utility of neutrality and abstinence by ‘classical’ psychoanalysts in the United States are contrasted with how intellectuals and cultural critics understood the significance of psychoanalytic abstinence. As early as the 1930s, members of the Frankfurt School discussed the cultural and social implications of psychoanalytic practices. Only in the 1960s and 1970s, however, did psychoanalytic abstinence become a topic within broader intellectual debates about American social character and the burgeoning ‘therapy culture’ in the USA. The shift from professional and epistemological concerns to cultural and political ones is indicative of the changing appreciation of psychoanalysis as a clinical discipline: for psychoanalysts as well as cultural critics, I argue, changing social mores and the professional decline of psychoanalysis infused the image of the abstinent psychoanalyst with nostalgic longing, making it a symbol of resistance against a culture seen to be in decline.

Streszczenie:
The article is devoted to the relationship between psychoanalysis, cultural studies and culturology. More attention is paid to the analysis of the conceptual and methodological contribution of psychoanalytic theory to cultural studies. The author emphasizes the nature of the reception of psychoanalytic theories in Western science, demonstrating that the invasion of psychoanalysis into the field of cultural studies, as well as the dynamics of their mutual influence was conditioned by the general ideological attitudes of «suspicion» towards the institutions of power. Psychoanalysis brings its methodological usefulness to cultural studies in that it can be used to reveal the conditions of creation and consumption of cultural products, the discovery of the subject’s representation strategies, and the degree of the researcher’s engagement. The conclusion is made that a productive dialogue between practicing psychoanalysts, researchers in the theory of psychoanalysis, as well as scholars involved in the theory and history of culture is necessary for the integration of modern psychoanalytic theory into domestic culturology.

An emotional and intellectual affinity between Chinese culture and psychoanalysis has surprised and attracted many of us who work and teach in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and Taiwan. A primary motive for seeking analysis and psychoanalytic training is because psychoanalysis serves as an inner resource for modern Chinese to resist the authority and moral coercion from family, repressive institutions, and the state. Despite the current focus on the narcissism of wealth, power, and fame among affluent urban Chinese, the reception of psychoanalysis is conditioned by contemporary and ancient cultural factors. For contemporary Chinese, psychoanalysis is an exciting tool of personal liberation to build a sense of an autonomous self that is not a part of traditional Chinese values and family structures. This article will focus on the traditional imperatives, suggesting that explicit trends in Chinese culture and philosophical and religious traditions contribute to explaining why there is currently an enthusiastic responsiveness to psychoanalysis in China (Scharff & Varvin, 2014). To those who have worked and taught in China there appears to be a cultural aptitude for the psychodynamic modes of thought, its dialectics, the coexistence of contradictions, the suspension and collapse of linear time categories that allows Chinese students and candidates to “take to” and under-stand analytic thought and practice. I believe the Chinese will, in the tradition of their rich and ancient intellectual heritage, develop a form of “Chinese psychoanalysis” which will synthesise the Western psychoanalytic “schools” and teachings with uniquely Chinese tempers, flavours, registers, and characteristics (Gerlach et al., 2013).

Streszczenie:
The purpose of the publication is to analyze views of American psychoanalytic Karen Horney on the relationship between culture and mental life. The main methodological principles of K. Horney are defined: rejection of causal relationship between childhood and mental processes in adult age; rejection of primacy of biological and physiological factors in mental life; rejection of attempts to create universal psychology of humankind. These changes in methodology are the main distinction between Horney's concepts and orthodox Freudianism that also had caused conflict between them. It is found that the main research guideline of K. Horney is the recognition of the influence of culture on the mental life of a person. Culture is understood by K. Horney as a set of values in society that form the demands for an individual. Contradictory demands become the main source of neurosis – repression out anxiety and suppression drives. K. Horney defines the central problem of modern society as competition, which implies aggressive achievement of success. Competition, according to K. Horney, contradicts the desire to gain affection, which is why the "neurotic personality of our time" is formed. Also analyzed are the discussions around whether Karen Horney's theory can be considered psychoanalytic. Despite the criticism of orthodox Freudians, Horney emphasized that her departure from classical psychoanalysis is possible only on the basis of Freud's discoveries. At the same time, whether her concept belongs to psychoanalysis depends on what to consider essential in it: following the dogmas formulated by Freud, or the study of unconscious processes of the human psyche. Since Horney herself adheres to the second thesis, from her point of view she remains a psychoanalyst, as evidenced by her founding of the Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis

The article analyses the trajectory of Dr José Bleger (1922–72), an Argentine psychoanalyst who tried to articulate his triple identity as a Jew, a Marxist and a psychoanalyst. Bleger played a central role in the constitution of the ‘psy movement’ and, in more general terms, in the diffusion of a ‘psy culture’ in Argentina, a country that today is considered as one of the ‘world capitals of psychoanalysis’. However, his trajectory showed not only the limits of his projects in the increasingly politically polarized Argentina of the 1960s, as well as their internal contradictions, but also the difficulties of articulating different identities in those agitated times. Through an analysis of Bleger's trajectory this article explores larger issues of Argentine political culture and their relations with the emergence of a psychoanalytic culture.

Freud considered Franz Alexander, the first graduate of the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute and an assistant in the Berlin Polyclinic, to be ‘one of our strongest hopes for the future’. Alexander went on to become the first director of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis in 1932 and modeled some of the Chicago Institute's mission on his Berlin experiences. He was also a researcher in psychosomatic medicine, a prolific writer about psychoanalysis and prominent in psychoanalytic organizations. As he proposed modifications in psychoanalytic technique, he became a controversial figure, especially in the elaboration of his ideas about brief therapy and the corrective emotional experience. This paper puts Alexander's achievements in historical context, draws connections between the Berlin and Chicago Institutes and suggests that, despite his quarrels with traditional psychoanalysis, Alexander's legacy may be in his attitude towards psychoanalysis, characterized by a commitment to scientific study, a willingness to experiment, and a conviction about the role of psychoanalysis within the larger culture.

This paper makes a plea for a closer rapprochement between psychoanalysis and psychology. While growth in the American Psychoanalytic Association has been extremely slow over the past ten years, growth in the nonmedical field has been extraordinary. Should psychanalysis embrace psychology as a science more fully, the effect on the culture would be enormous.

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores how we might think the relation between psychoanalysis and the cultural field through Donald Winnicott's concept of the environment, seeking to bring the concept into dialogue with more “classical” strands of psychoanalytic theorizing. A substantial introduction sets out the rationale behind the thesis by reading Freud and Winnicott in relation to the “classic” and the “romantic” (Strenger 1989), or the “negative” and “positive” (Rustin 2001), in psychoanalytic thought. It goes on to outline the value of bringing these tendencies together in order to think the relationship between psychoanalysis, culture and change. The chapters which follow move from psychoanalysis as a “cultural cure” – a method and discourse drawing on and feeding into a broad conception of cultural life – towards a notion of “culture as cure” informed by Winnicott's theory of the environment. Chapter one examines Freud's refusal of the “culture”/ “civilization” distinction and considers what it means for the idea of a cultural cure. Chapter two considers whether Winnicott's thinking about “culture” ultimately prioritises the aesthetic over the political. Chapter three uses Aldous Huxley's Brave New World ([1932] 1994) to explore an analogy between totalitarianism, technology and maternal care. Chapter four turns to the series In Treatment (HBO 2008-) to think about the intersections of therapy and technology in terms of reflection and recognition. Chapter five employs Ian McEwan's Saturday (2005) as a means to reflect on the capacity of culture to cure. Ultimately, I suggest that social “cure” may require more than “good-enough” cultural forms and objects, but Winnicott's “romantic” theorization of the aesthetic, coupled with a “classic” attention to structures of power and oppression may offer a means of thinking the relationship between psychoanalysis and culture in potentially transformative ways.

Streszczenie:
This thesis discusses the gift in terms of presence and interpretation using varied examples of image that form a visual culture. It contextualises the term "giftness" by analysing its use and our socio-cultural understanding of its function as it relates to the gift process. The hermeneutic processes attached to both the gift, and gifting, are multifarious and require examination of moments of instability present in the act of interpretation and meaning. The gift relationship is juxtaposed against the relationship between image and reader/observer to highlight the abstract quality of the gift and its inherent instability that exists within gift interpretation in general. The fundamental structure and unity of the gift, as is based upon relations between subjects, helps to identify and analyse systems of power and subjectivity developed in terms of investment in order to emphasise the complexities that arise through inter-subjective relations, particularly gift exchange, and those between subject and image. Certain theoretical models help to exemplify and illuminate this thesis, predominantly post-structuralist and psychoanalytic theories. The gift’s condition of instability is further examined in terms of discursive formation and function, looking at how the gift is enunciated so that one can recognise a gift and giving, and acknowledge its problematic status. The relationship between subject and image is investigated to see if we are able to read this investment as a gift relationship within the context of giftness, that is when giftness operates as an instable and challenging element to discursive exchange in visual mediums such as film, painting, television, art and photography. An examination of the gift aporia in this thesis is directed towards a subject’s investment in the image. What transpires between subject and image is akin to what circulates between giver and receiver, on the basis of investment. On this basis, the present configuration of giftness is utilised in terms of the image.

Produce a complex historical report, heterodox and heterogeneous from psychoanalysis meanders in Curitiba, by analyzing documents, acquired information from newspapers and performing interviews, are the main goal of this thesis. This is an unprecedented proposal aiming to minimize the significative lack of researches in this area about Curitiba as well as to contribute to the theoretical construction work regarding the way how the psychoanalysis is thought and practiced in Brazil. Therefore, it was opted to divide the work in three chapters. In the first chapter, it is detailed the used methodological, theoretical ethical procedures. The second chapter proposes a reflection about the three main moments of psychoanalysis\' institutionalization process, in which was verified that Freud endow, consciously or unconsciously, the classic psychoanalytical historiography with the ideas from the splendid isolation and resistance to psychoanalysis. In the third chapter, divided in two principal parts, it is related histories of the psychoanalysis in Curitiba. Some of these narratives are permeated by parts of the history of the city. As the background of these histories are two modernization processes of Curitiba. The first part presents some of processes that give origin to institutionalization of psychoanalysis in the city, contemplating since mid 1960s to 1975, year that represents the arriving of the lacanian movement in the city. The present work made possible a more clear mapping of the transit of psychoanalysis by the city of Curitiba and the option of using the psychoanalysis culture and not only the institutionalized psychoanalysis as a parameter for research allowed the knowledge of how in curitibian society, especially in a so-called intellectual circles, the growth of psychoanalytic culture helped to shape, little by little, a cultural ground and a favorable tradition for the institutionalization of psychoanalysis, especially from mid 1970s, the moment when it occurs the expansion of psychoanalysis in the city

This paper aims to pose questions about the subject , about society and about the symptoms of culture by means of mutual relations between the subjectivity of the contemporary subject and the cinematographical work. To this end, a bibliographical research about the psychoanalitical history and concepts in Freud and Lacan is carried out. This research introduces a brief history of cinema and a few themes that are entwined with the seventh art and psychoanalysis. Subsidies in the field research are also sought in order to develop the objectives. "O Homem que Copiava" (The Man who Copied ) is the chosen work for the field research considering that it is a contemporary Brazilian film whose characters are the ordinary youth living their daily lives. The methodology for the analysis of the data collected in the survey about the film carried out with adolescents is performed by means of a metapsychological essay. The reading of the bibliographical, documental and field research will instrumentalise the researcher’s transference that, along with the subjective implications, will analyze the text constructed by the collected data in order to identify the significants that may be used for the composition of the metapsychological essay. The significants found in the speech of the participants: false, true, money, violence, banalized, nonsense, father, kill, drugs, happy, poor thing, necessity, law, weak, safety, have been used to develop the metapsychological essay. In view of the bibliographical, documental research and of the reading made by the teenagers about the film "O homem que copiava"( The man Who Copied) in the field research, it might be deduced that it is possible to derive subjective effects from the various aspects of the current ideals in the culture, such as the nonrecognition of the symbolic debt to their ancestors, the apology of individualism in detriment of tradition, the decline of the paternal role, the search for a totalizing pleasure, the nonrecognition of limits. Therein lies the current ethical crises in terms of failure of the basic values existing in comtemporaneity.

Our contemporary culture is the product of enlightenment movements that have produced a discursive mode that favors skepticism, abstraction, and a mistrust of the body. This crisis of meaning has produced subjects that have lost the capacity for convincing symbolic exchanges. This project aims to reveal the vital importance of the imaginary for our possibilities of community, culture, and connectedness. I will use the work of Julia Kristeva to explain how we benefit from a symbolic that is supported by a robust and dynamic imaginary that springs from our embodied life. My thesis is that the foundation of the imaginary is best conceived as acoustical rather than visual. The contemporary experience that best recovers these representational capacities is found in our making, hearing, and sharing music. The current crisis of meaning can be ameliorated and subjectivity can be restored when aesthetic experiences and artistic practices rehabilitate the semiotic body as a source of meaning.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis essay traces the role of breathing in the literature and history of psychoanalysis from Josef Breuer and Sigmund Freud through Otto Fenichel and Wilhelm Reich. It uncovers interesting discontinuities in the significance granted to breathing as the psychoanalytic tradition develops. These observations of the breath shed new light on major theoretical divisions of psychoanalysis from its founding through its arrival in the US with the émigré analysts. This history offers views both into the changing imagination of the breath itself and into the role of the body in an evolving psychoanalytic practice more generally.

Nuclear safety attracts many concerns from society especially after Fukushima accident. In recent years, although nuclear safety system has been continuously improved on the aspects of design functions, safety standards and safety assessment methods, etc., the public panic has not been reduced correspondingly. In some countries and regions, the public nuclear panic has a strong impact on the sustainable development of nuclear energy, which has been widely recognized by nuclear industries worldwide. In this paper, we studied the nuclear public panic from three aspects with the analysis of psychological and sociological methods, including: (1) Discussing the source of nuclear panic in the sense of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and psychoanalysis; (2) Systemically studying the irrational behaviors in nuclear accidents and the public nuclear culture with cognitive theory; (3) Giving out the general model of public nuclear panic. In the last, some suggestions of nuclear risk perception and communication were also shown as reference, which are significant for the future work.

Streszczenie:
This paper explores the relevant knowledge in philosophy, psychology, art theory, and visual culture dealing with the phenomenon of the spectator. Spectatorship is explored through complex relationships between authors, works, observers, and the environment, which condition the view and consider how social and cultural patterns mediate the image. In this approach, interest is no longer primarily focused on the visual object but on visuality, a complex set of conditions in which a work of art is created, observed, and interpreted, researching the history of the gaze theory: perception and its physiological and cultural conditioning, the implicitness of the observer in the aesthetics of the reception, psychoanalytic theories about the constitution of the subject with a gaze, feminist ideas of voyeurism, and the male gaze, theories on technological and cultural conditioning of the scopic regimes, the cultural history of gaze and the gaze politics that approach viewing as possession of power. An analysis of the theory shows that the role of the body as a perceiving mechanism is present in the naturalistic approach to observation but is avoided due to its subjectivity and relativity. Although it was created in the 1960s, the theory of gaze has roots in the hermeneutics of art history and the aesthetics of reception. The cultural determination of gaze, its dependence on social norms, and the technological conditions of the medium indicate that our view of art and the visual world has been learned, which opens spaces for the acceptance of other gazes that are equally valuable.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The mantic and prophetic dream interpretation is an ancient practice that has been applied in different contexts and at different historical times. With Freud's psychoanalytic proposal to interpret patients' dreams, the meaning of dream content and experience becomes a central element of the psychotherapeutic process. Freud obviously had an enormous cultural knowledge of ancient texts and ancient practices. The incubation technique in Freud's psychotherapeutic proposal was considered an innovative psychological strategy for understanding the patient's thoughts and feelings, but little attention was paid to the mantic quality that had distinguished the incubation process and dream interpretation for many centuries and across several civilizations. In recent decades, the mantic meaning of dreams has been considered useful within the ethnopsychiatric approach to restore the patient's ability to develop a new perspective in relation to a traumatic situation. In this article I will try to explain the use of mantic dream interpretation during the psychotherapeutic process. KEYWORDS: mantic dreams; prophecy; psychotherapy; ethnopsychiatry; dream- interpretation; trauma

Streszczenie:
The article examines the problem of the “memory studies” development and the role that psychology and sociology play in the development of this interdisciplinary field of humanities. The authors divide the history of memory studies into two periods. The analysis of the first stage of the conceptual formation of memory research, starting from the end of the XIX century and till the first part of the century, first of all, on the basis of psychological, sociological is revealed. The authors demonstrate the trajectory of the evolution of the scientific understanding of “memory” from a purely psychological interpretation of the phenomenon to a socio-psychological concept (group memory), to a broad sociological theory (socio-cultural and historical memory). It is shown how at the second stage of the memory studies development, starting from the second half of the XX century till the present time, sociological research unfolds in the paradigm of memory studies and at the same time there is a new growth of interest in the psychological point of these studies. This is reflected in the development of psychoanalytic concepts, biographical research methods, and the increased role of oral history. It is concluded that the dialectical interaction of sociology and psychology in the interdisciplinary field of memory studies forms the basis of the heuristic potential of this modern humanities research.

Streszczenie:
Like other genres of folk literature, fairy tales of Vietnamese ethnicity with miraculous character systems become strongly influenced by Southeast Asia’s historical-cultural region. Apart from being influenced by farming, Buddhism, Confucianism, urbanism, Vietnamese fairy tales are deeply influenced by ethno-linguistic elements. Consequently, fairy tales do not preserve their root identities, but shift and emerge over time. The study investigates and classifies the miraculous tales of peoples of Vietnam with strange characters (fairies, gods, Buddha, devils) in linguistic and ethnographic groups, and in high-to-low ratios. Here the study expands on, evaluates, correlates, and differentiates global miraculous characters, and describes influences of creation of miraculous characters in these fairy tales. The author affirms the value of this character system within the fairy tales, and develops conceptions of global aesthetic views. To conduct the research, the author applies statistical methods, documentary surveys, type comparison methods, systematic approaches, synthetic analysis methods, and interdisciplinary methods (cultural studies, ethnography, psychoanalysis). The author conducted a reading of and referring to the miraculous fairy tales of the peoples of Vietnam with strange characters. 250 fairy tales were selected from 32 ethnic groups of Vietnam, which have the most types of miraculous characters, classifying these according to respective language groups, through an ethnography. The author compares sources to determine characteristics of each miraculous character, and employs system methods to understand the components of characters. The author analyzes and evaluates the results based on the results of the survey and classification. Within the framework of the article, the author focuses on the following two issues; some general features of the geographical conditions and history of Vietnam in the context of Southeast Asia’s ancient and medieval periods were observed; a survey was conducted of results of virtual characters in the fairy tales of Vietnam from the perspective of language, yet accomplished through an ethnography. The results of the study indicate a calculation and quantification of magical characters in the fairy tales of Vietnamese. This study contributes to the field of Linguistic Anthropology in that it presents the first work to address the system of virtual characters in the fairy tales of Vietnam in terms of language, while it surveys different types of material, origins formed, and so forth.
