Diploma thesis named Evaluation of BI processes in the banking sector is focused on obtaining information from production databases and streamlining the process of creating BI reports in the organization. The process of creating a report is an analytical work, examining the current state of business processes and their support by enterprise applications. The aim of this work is to create a practical proposal for improving the effectiveness of tasks connected with a report set up within GE Money Bank. The main objective is achieved through a design work on the maturity model of BI reporting. Part of the model is a set of tools for identifying the current level of maturity and the conditions necessary for a transition to the next level in accordance with the required level of a BI reporting. The benefit of this diploma thesis is an analysis of commonly used approaches to assess the maturity levels of processes and an application of results of this analysis in Business Intelligence area, specifically the maturity assessment reporting. The result is a maturity model of BI reporting.

Business process models are used within a range of organizational initiatives, where every stakeholder has a unique perspective on a process and demands the respective model. As a consequence, multiple process models capturing the very same business process coexist. Keeping such models in sync is a challenge within an ever changing business environment: once a process is changed, all its models have to be updated. Due to a large number of models and their complex relations, model maintenance becomes error-prone and expensive. Against this background, business process model abstraction emerged as an operation reducing the number of stored process models and facilitating model management. Business process model abstraction is an operation preserving essential process properties and leaving out insignificant details in order to retain information relevant for a particular purpose. Process model abstraction has been addressed by several researchers. The focus of their studies has been on particular use cases and model transformations supporting these use cases.
This thesis systematically approaches the problem of business process model abstraction shaping the outcome into a framework. We investigate the current industry demand in abstraction summarizing it in a catalog of business process model abstraction use cases. The thesis focuses on one prominent use case where the user demands a model with coarse-grained activities and overall process ordering constraints. We develop model transformations that support this use case starting with the transformations based on process model structure analysis. Further, abstraction methods considering the semantics of process model elements are investigated. First, we suggest how semantically related activities can be discovered in process models-a barely researched challenge. The thesis validates the designed abstraction methods against sets of industrial process models and discusses the method implementation aspects. Second, we develop a novel model transformation, which combined with the related activity discovery allows flexible non-hierarchical abstraction. In this way this thesis advocates novel model transformations that facilitate business process model management and provides the foundations for innovative tool support.<br>Geschäftsprozessmodelle werden in einer Fülle organisatorischer Initiativen eingesetzt, wobei verschiedene Stakeholder individuelle Ansprüche an die Sicht auf den jeweiligen Prozess haben. Dies führt dazu, dass zu einem Geschäftsprozess eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher Modelle existiert. In einer sich ständig verändernden Geschäftsumgebung ist es daher schwierig, diese Vielzahl von Modellen konsistent zu halten: Ändert sich sich ein Prozess, müssen alle Modelle, die ihn beschreiben, aktualisiert werden. Aufgrund der schieren Menge an Prozessmodellen und ihrer komplexen Beziehungen zueinander, erhöhen sich Aufwand und Kosten zur Pflege aller Modelle enorm. Vor diesem Hintergrund ermöglicht die Abstraktion von Geschäftsprozessmodellen, die Menge der Modelle zu reduzieren und damit ihre Verwaltung zu vereinfachen. Abstraktion von Geschäftsprozessmodellen bezeichnet eine Transformation eines Prozessmodells, so dass es für einen bestimmten Zweck besonders geeignet ist. Bei der Abstraktion von Geschäftsprozessen bleiben essentielle Eigenschaften eines Modells erhalten, während irrelevante Eigenschaften verworfen werden. Mehrere Studien stellen Prozessmodellabstraktion in den Fokus und konzentrieren sich auf konkrete Anwendungsfälle, für die sie geeignete Transformationen entwickelt haben.
Diese Dissertation untersucht das Problem der Prozessmodellabstraktion und systematisiert die Lösung in einem Framework. Aktuelle Anforderungen der Industrie an die Abstraktion von Prozessmodellen wurden recherchiert und in einem Katalog von Anwendungsfällen zusammengefasst, von denen ein besonderer für die weiteren Untersuchungen ausgewählt wurde. In diesem Fall erwartet der Nutzer ein Modell niedrigeren Detailgrades, in welchem die Kontrollflussbeziehungen des Ursprungsmodells erhalten bleiben. Beginnend bei Modelltransformationen, die auf der Analyse der Prozessmodellstruktur aufbauen, entwickeln wir neuartige Abstraktionsoperationen zur Unterstützung dieses Anwendungsfalles. Darüber hinaus untersuchen wir Abstraktionsmethoden, welche die Semantik von Prozessmodellelementen berücksichtigen. Zum einen zeigen wir, wie Aktivitäten ermittelt werden können, die miteinander in semantischer Beziehung stehen - ein Problem, das bisher nur unzureichend betrachtet wurde. Die vorgeschlagenen Methoden werden mithilfe industrieller Prozessmodellsammlungen validiert und deren Umsetzung diskutiert. Zum anderen schlagen wir eine innovative Modelltransformation zur nicht-hierarchischen Abstraktion von Prozessmodellen vor. Dieser liegt die Ermittlung in Beziehung stehender Aktivitäten zugrunde. Demzufolge präsentiert diese Arbeit eine originäre Methode zur Prozessmodellabstraktion, die die Verwaltung von Geschäftsprozessmodellen vereinfacht und den Grundstein für innovative Softwarewerkzeuge legt.

Business process management is fast becoming one of the most important approaches for designing contemporary organizations and information systems. A critical component of business process management is business process modelling. It is widely accepted that modelling of business processes from scratch is a complex, time-consuming and error-prone task. However the efforts made to model these processes are seldom reused beyond their original purpose. Reuse of business process models has the potential to overcome the challenges of modelling business processes from scratch. Process model repositories, properly populated, are certainly a step toward supporting reuse of process models. This thesis starts with the observation that the existing process model repositories for supporting process model reuse suffer from several shortcomings that affect their usability in practice. Firstly, most of the existing repositories are proprietary, therefore they can only be enhanced or extended with new models by the owners of the repositories. Secondly, it is difficult to locate and retrieve relevant process models from a large collection. Thirdly, process models are not goal related, thereby making it difficult to gain an understanding of the business goals that are realized by a certain model. Finally, process model repositories lack a clear mechanism to identify and define the relationship between business processes and as a result it is difficult to identify related processes. Following a design science research paradigm, this thesis proposes an open and language-independent process model repository with an efficient retrieval system to support process model reuse. The proposed repository is grounded on four original and interrelated contributions: (1) a set of requirements that a process model repository should possess to increase the probability of process model reuse; (2) a context-based process semantic annotation model for semantically annotating process models to facilitate effective retrieval of process models; (3) a business process relationship meta-model for identifying and defining the relationship of process models in the repository; and (4) architecture of a process model repository for process model reuse. The models and architecture produced in this thesis were evaluated to test their utility, quality and efficacy. The semantic annotation model was evaluated through two empirical studies using controlled experiments. The conclusion drawn from the two studies is that the annotation model improves searching, navigation and understanding of process models. The process relationship meta-model was evaluated using an informed argument to determine the extent to which it meets the established requirements. The results of the analysis revealed that the meta-model meets the established requirements. Also the analysis of the architecture against the requirements indicates that the architecture meets the established requirements.<br>Processhantering, också kallat ärendehantering, har blivit en av de viktigaste ansatserna för att utforma dagens organisationer och informationssystem. En central komponent i processhantering är processmodellering. Det är allmänt känt att modellering av processer kan vara en komplex, tidskrävande och felbenägen uppgift. Och de insatser som görs för att modellera processer kan sällan användas bortom processernas ursprungliga syfte. Återanvändning av processmodeller skulle kunna övervinna många av de utmaningar som finns med att modellera processer. En katalog över processmodeller är ett steg mot att stödja återanvändning av processmodeller. Denna avhandling börjar med observationen att befintliga processmodellkataloger för att stödja återanvändning av processmodeller lider av flera brister som påverkar deras användbarhet i praktiken. För det första är de flesta processmodellkatalogerna proprietära, och därför kan endast katalogägarna förbättra eller utöka dem med nya modeller. För det andra är det svårt att finna och hämta relevanta processmodeller från en stor katalog. För det tredje är processmodeller inte målrelaterade, vilket gör det svårt att få en förståelse för de affärsmål som realiseras av en viss modell. Den föreslagna katalogen bygger på fyra originella och inbördes relaterade bidrag: (1) en uppsättning krav som en processmodellkatalog bejöver uppfylla för att öka möjligheterna till återanvändning av processmodeller; (2) en kontextbaserad semantisk processannoteringsmodell för semantisk annotering av processmodeller för att underlätta effektivt återvinnande av processmodeller; (3) en metamodell för processrelationer för att identifiera och definiera förhållandet mellan processmodeller i katalogen; och (4) en arkitektur av en processmodellkatalog för återanvändning av processmodeller. De modeller och den arkitektur som tagits fram i denna avhandling har utvärderats för att testa deras användbarhet, kvalitet och effektivitet. Den semantiska annotationsmodellen utvärderades genom två empiriska studier med kontrollerade experiment. Slutsatsen av de två studierna är att modellen förbättrar sökning, navigering och förståelse för processmodeller. Metamodellen för processrelationer utvärderades med hjälp av ett informerat argument för att avgöra i vilken utsträckning den uppfyllde de ställda kraven. Resultaten av analysen visade att metamodellen uppfyllde dessa krav. Även analysen av arkitekturen indikerade att denna uppfyllde de fastställda kraven.

Process model matchers automate the detection of activities that represent similar functionality in different models. Thus, they provide support for various tasks related to the management of business processes including model collection management and process design. Yet, prior research primarily demonstrated the matchers’ effectiveness, i.e., the accuracy and the completeness of the results. In this context (i) the size of the empirical data is often small, (ii) all data is used for the matcher development, and (iii) the validity of the design decisions is not studied. As a result, existing matchers yield a varying and typically low effectiveness when applied to different datasets, as among others demonstrated by the process model matching contests in 2013 and 2015. With this in mind, the thesis studies the effectiveness of matchers by separating development from evaluation data and by empirically analyzing the validity and the limitations of design decisions. In particular, the thesis develops matchers that rely on different sources of information. First, the activity labels are considered as natural-language descriptions and the Bag-of-Words Technique is introduced which achieves a high effectiveness in comparison to the state of the art. Second, the Order Preserving Bag-of-Words Technique analyzes temporal dependencies between activities in order to automatically configure the Bag-of-Words Technique and to improve its effectiveness. Third, expert feedback is used to adapt the matchers to the domain characteristics of process model collections. Here, the Adaptive Bag-of-Words Technique is introduced which outperforms the state-of-the-art matchers and the other matchers from this thesis.

A survey performed over existing two pilot-scale and two full-scale RO desalination facilities to study the current status of boron rejection showed a highest rejection 85% leading to permeate boron concentration of 0.52 mg/L, and recent studies predicted a cost increase due to incorporation of boron reduction systems. Mathematical models were developed to study the process performance and related cost implications. The deterministic process model was verified with pilot-scale experiment performed using a single spiral wound module and was later modified to represent the full-scale design options available to meet the required water quality criteria. Then the selected full-scale design options were simulated to predict their performance in terms of recovery and boron rejection.
For cost analysis, to account for uncertainty probability models were developed for stochastic inputs to the cost estimation model and were used with operating parameters from the full-scale simulations to determine the expected total cost of water produced. Later, a sensitivity analysis was performed to observe the effect of change in uncertainty of inputs. Further, the applications of the deterministic process model are suggested.

The Information and Communications Technology (ICT) environment constitutes an integral part of our daily lives. Individual computer users and large corporate companies are increasingly dependent on services provided by ICT. These services range from basic communication to managing large databases with corporate client information. Within these ICT environments something is bound to go wrong for a number of reasons, which include an intentional attack on information services provided by an organisation. These organisations have in turn become interested in tracing the root cause of such an incident with the intent of successfully prosecuting a suspected malicious user. Digital forensics has developed signi cantly towards prosecuting such criminals. The volumes of information and rapid technological developments have contributed to making simple investigations rather cumbersome. In the digital forensics community a number of digital forensic process models have been proposed encapsulating a complete methodology for an investigation. Software developers have also greatly contributed toward the development of digital forensics tools. These developments have resulted in divergent views on digital forensic investigations. This dissertation presents the IDFPM - Integrated Digital Forensic Process Model. The model is presented after examining digital forensic process models within the current academic and law enforcement literature. An adapted sequential logic notation is used to represent the forensic models. The terminology used in the various models is examined and standardised to suit the IDFPM. The increased adoption of business process management approaches, tools, and practices has led organizations
to accumulate large collections of business process models. These collections can easily include from a
hundred to a thousand models, especially in the context of multinational corporations or as a result of
organizational mergers and acquisitions. A concrete problem is thus how to maintain these large repositories
in such a way that their complexity does not hamper their practical usefulness as a means to describe and
communicate business operations. This paper proposes a technique to automatically infer suitable names
for business process models and fragments thereof. This technique is useful for model abstraction scenarios,
as for instance when user-specific views of a repository are required, or as part of a refactoring initiative
aimed to simplify the repository's complexity. The technique is grounded in an adaptation of the theory
of meaning to the realm of business process models. We implemented the technique in a prototype tool
and conducted an extensive evaluation using three process model collections from practice and a case study
involving process modelers with different experience.

The outage process started in 2012 to contribute to the effective planning and execution of outages. The successful completion of outages depends on effective planning and execution of an outage. At the time of the research study, poor outage performance at Eskom’s power stations contributed to load shedding of electricity in South Africa.
The research problem statement reads as follows: The absence of an outage process maturity indicator diminishes the ability of the Outage Management Department (OMD) to comprehend the current process maturity level. The research question: Will the Outage Management Department be able to identify improvement opportunities if the maturity level of the outage process is established?

The research study uses a descriptive research design and applies the survey research method. Greener and Martelli’s (2015: Online) Business Research Process (Sources: Greener & Martelli, 2015: Online) is used together with Farooq’s Research Steps for Survey Research (2015, Online). The survey questionnaire adopted from Smith’s Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Maturity Matrix (2013: Online) was used to develop the survey questionnaire. The author developed the Outage Management Maturity Framework by combining Business Process Management Maturity model and a Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Maturity Matrix.
The research finding is that a process maturity model can determine the maturity level of the outage process and is useful as a process improvement tool. The research findings rank the maturity level of the outage process at Level 2, Experimenting.

Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to present the result of simulation process maturity (SPM) assessments in the pharmaceutical and manufacturing industry using a process maturity model derived from empirical research. The model is used to benchmark an organisations simulation capability and to apply the results of the assessment to develop a road map for implementing simulation process improvement as well as integration initiatives within the organisation. Methodology approach – This is a survey-based research on benchmarking simulation process in the industry. The SPM model was adopted as the reference model and data were collected through interviews with key simulation staff within each organisation with the aim of identifying anomalies or conformities in the way simulation projects are performed. A pragmatic scoring system was introduced based on the fulfilment of defined requirements to score findings from the interviews based on defined SPM tenets and the sample profiles SPM tier calculated. Findings – Each tenet of the SPM model consists of 3 maturity tiers with increasing level of complexity of the process. The results of the assessment showed that the overall average of SPM of the sample profile is at tier 2. Key discrepancies representing the lowest and highest ratings are found to be mostly related to process understanding and management commitment. A higher mean score is recognised for the samples displaying a deeper integration with top management and alignment with organisational strategic objectives. These maturity tiers and tenets reflect the extent of the implementation of contracting best practices within the studied industries. Research limitations/implications – This thesis uses a purposeful sampling approach designed at acquiring data on an organisational current simulation process. The assessment survey was conducted solely on qualified simulation personal within pharmaceutical and manufacturing. It is as such not clear whether the proposed SPM model will work within other types of industrial settings and if so how to organise the simulation activities in that setting. By purposively selecting the sample profile there are limitations concerning generalizability. Still, the conclusion based on the analysis of these benchmarking assessments may offer key take-aways in the context of process management. Practical implications – The findings suggest that benchmarking can be effective in measuring and improving simulation process capabilities within the pharmaceutical and manufacturing industry. The use of these benchmarking assessment can be instrumental in tracking the achievements of this process and enable management to measure the quality of the simulation activities in addition to offer guidance on what development actions to prioritise. By improving the simulation process, organisations will work towards furthering the integrity and credibility of its simulation studies. Originality/value – The existing literature does properly not present adequate empirical research in the field on maturity on the simulation process. Also, the analysis method used in this study will further help organisation to perform self-assessment and determine their respective SPM. This value is reflected in using the results for implementing simulation process improvement initiatives that will ensure that the process is conducted in the most effective and efficient way.

We observed that, the developed model determines weak and strong aspects of the processes, gives a detailed picture for the process quality, extends the quality aspects of existing models, and provides quantifiable information to hospitals to compare their processes with multiple organizations.

A large organization that has many projects to manage may want to build a model that gives an overview of the common and variable parts of its projects' processes. This action is process model generalisation. The McGill Software Engineering Laboratory has developed a technique and a tool to achieve that. The work described in this thesis consisted of reengineering the tool to give it a longer life expectancy and to make it part of a future client-server architecture suitable for developing a suite of process management tools. The tool was effectively reengineered and this helped the laboratory define the architecture better. Also, some lessons about software maintenance were learned.

Several nuclear safeguarding treaties and agreements have been set up through the IAEA and others to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. However these cannot and have not prevented a rogue country from acquiring nuclear weapons. Assessing that a country adheres to the treaties is not sufficient on its own to rule out that a country is not trying to develop an elicit nuclear weapon program. The aim of this thesis is to examine that the systems methodology set out by Blockley and Godfrey (2000) called ‘doing it differently’ has the potential to improve the effectiveness of nuclear safeguarding. The advantage of the methodology is that it has the potential to enable the whole context (hard and soft systems) to be addressed in a consistent manner. Thus all of the information and evidence relating to both the hard systems (e.g. gas centrifuge facility, reprocessing facility) and soft systems (eg political intent to comply with agreements, developing scientific expertise) can be combined into one model. By combining hierarchical process modelling with uncertain evidence management then performance and success may well be improved. All of the players in the processes such as inspectors of the IAEA, experts, intelligence analysts, policy makers, the media and the citizens have to be involved to build a comprehensive model. The model developed in this thesis incorporates sufficient of the technical, scientific, political and economical issues to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. The main objectives of this research are to: 1) build a feasible paper version of a process model; 2) define and name a detailed set of sub-processes; 3) identify some of the processes through which the model could be tested in this and future work; 4) define descriptors for each of these processes; 5) test the ‘Italian Flag’ methodology for assessing uncertain evidence outcomes intuitively (i.e. not yet using the mathematical formulation). In this thesis a partial feasible model of the whole nuclear safeguarding process (i.e. testing that ‘Ruritania’ does not pose a nuclear threat to international peace) has been produced using mindmaps. The classification of the sub processes was done using BCIOD+R. The operational ‘O’ processes were developed in more detail to the technical level (e.g. components of a gas centrifuge rotor). Certain of these processes have been described in detail using ‘why, who, what, where, when and how’. The work has shown that the ‘doing it differently’ methodology is feasible for application to nuclear safeguarding. Clearly substantially more development work is required to deliver even a preliminary prototype. The work has demonstrated that the methodology has enormous potential to: co-ordinate information and evidence from various technical experts in the field; co-ordinate technical and non technical information and evidence; to create an ability to search and visualise evidence to derive answers to high level (or even low level) questions; to create better value for money in the whole safeguarding activities; to improve the provision of the right information to the right person at the right time.

This article addresses the relationship between the Process and the Constitution. For this purpose, it is explained what is the object of study of the Procedural Law, and which is the litigation model adopted in article 139 of the Peruvian Constitution, why this model is about a system with its own autonomy and substantivity and not about a subsystem, and how Civil Law and Common Law converging in this model. Furthermore, the author establishes, based on the Constitution, the reason why the existing procedural guarantees in our legal system do not imply a “right to a right decision”, but only the right to a fair process, and explains the difference between “fair process” and “justice” or “judicial truth”.<br>El presente artículo aborda la relación existente entre el Proceso y la Constitución. Para tal fin, se explica cuál es el objeto de estudio del Derecho Procesal y cuál es el modelo de litigación adoptado en el artículo 139 de la Constitución Peruana, por qué este modelo se trata de un sistema con autonomía y sustantividad propias y no de un subsistema, y cómo convergen el Civil Law y el Common Law en este modelo. Há um consenso na literatura de que a aderência a um modelo de referência torna a gestão do processo de desenvolvimento de produtos (PDP) mais eficiente, pois estes auxiliam na sua representação, compreensão, elaboração, gestão e melhoria. Apesar de existirem diversos métodos de modelagem de PDP disponíveis, estes métodos são ainda pouco utilizados pela comunidade prática. Uma das possíveis causas deste problema é a dificuldade que as vistas elaboradas por estes métodos de modelagem oferecem para a visualização e compreensão do processo. Não há ainda estudos sobre a modelagem de PDP que considerem a perspectiva do usuário de forma satisfatória. Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo propor novas vistas para modelos de referencia de PDP que sejam mais eficazes, eficientes e satisfatórias no atendimento aos propósitos dos usuários de modelos de referência de PDP, em comparação com as vistas existentes. Para isso foram desenvolvidos dois protótipos de modelos de referência de PDP, um com novas vistas propostas, de caráter analógico, e um com vistas existentes, baseadas em fluxo de atividades com ligações lógicas. Esses protótipos foram submetidos a testes de usabilidade. Os resultados mostram que as vistas propostas foram mais eficazes, eficientes e satisfatórias para a maioria dos propósitos analisados. Conclui-se que vistas analógicas podem ser mais adequadas para a representação de modelos de referência de PDP, em relação às vistas existentes baseadas em fluxo lógico de atividades.<br>There is a consensus in the literature that adherence to a reference model makes product development (PD) process managing more efficient, because reference models support the representation, understanding, design and improvement of these processes. Although a variety of modeling methods are available, they are still not intensively used by the practical community. One of the possible reasons for this problem is the difficulty offered to process visualization and comprehension by views elaborated though these modeling methods. There is still a gap on the literature with respect to studies on PD reference models that consider the user perspective. This research aims to propose new views for PD reference models, which can be more effective, efficient and satisfactory than the existing ones regarding the purposes of PD reference models users. For this end, two reference models prototypes were developed, one of them with new analogic views, and another with existing activity network-based views. These prototypes were tested for usability. The results show that the proposed views were more effective, efficient and satisfactory than the traditional ones for most analyzed purposes. The conclusion is that analogic views can be more suitable to satisfy the purposes of users of PD reference models than activity network-based views.

Aim of this thesis is to analyze the current situation, to identify bottlenecks and to propose improvements to the department of acquisitions in the selected financial company, which is an important part of the Czech market and which desire not to be named. In the first part of my thesis is provided to the reader a theoretical basis necessary to understand the following text. Then I create simulation models for individual teams, which take part in the mentioned department. These models are based only on average and total values. That is why in the next section, there is described the work to bring them closer to reality with shifts of administrators and the variable number of entities, which are processed throughout the day. Based on the analysis of calculated values, I propose two methods of redistribution of actions to reduce the number of employees and to increase their efficiency.

Thesis (PhD (Process Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.<br>The feasibility of predicting paint properties directly from the raw material formulation as well as
the rheological data is investigated in this study. Although extensive work has been carried out on
the prediction of paint properties in terms of the raw material data, very little research has been
carried out on the prediction of paint properties in terms of the rheological data. Little is known
about the relationship between fundamental rheological properties and real-world performance.
The paint under investigation consists of fourteen raw materials. These raw materials interact in a
very complex manner to produce certain desired paint properties. Evaluation of these interactions
in terms of constitutive equations is almost impossible and the relationships between paint
properties, raw materials and rheology can only be modelled in a statistical way. Linear
relationships are investigated with linear parameter estimation techniques such as multiple linear
regression. However, it has been found that many of these relationships are non-linear and that
linear modelling techniques are no longer applicable for certain situations, e.g. at very high
concentrations of specific raw materials. Non-linear techniques such as neural networks are used
in these situations.
The relationship between the raw materials, paint properties and rheology are evaluated using the
following three models:
· MODEL 1: The relationship between rheology and raw materials
· MODEL 2: The relationship between paint properties and raw materials
· MODEL 3: The relationship between paint properties and rheology
MODEL 1 makes use of techniques such as principal component analysis and preliminary
modelling to respectively reduce redundancy and to capture as much data as possible. MODELS
2 and 3 make use of linear screening techniques in order to identify relevant raw materials and
paint properties.
The validity of every model is checked to ensure that predictions and interpretations are unbiased
and efficient. MODEL 1 revealed that emulsion, extender particles, pigment, water, organic
pigment and solvent are the six most important raw materials affecting the rheology of the specific
paint. The rheology curves that are predicted most accurately by means of multiple linear
regression are the “Amplitude Sweep” (AS), “3-Interval-Thixotropy-Test” (3-ITT) and the “Flow
Curve” (FC). Non-linear rheological behaviour is encountered at high pigment volume
concentrations (PVC) and volume solids (VS), due to the strong dependency of the rheology of
the paint on these properties. It has been shown that neural networks perform better than multiple
linear regression in predicting the rheological behaviour of these paint samples for which the raw
materials vary by more than 20% from the standard formulation. On average, neural networks improve predictability of the rheological parameters of these samples by 54%. The largest
improvement in predictability is made on the rheological variable “Extra Low Frequency” value
(CXLF), where multiple linear regression resulted in relative errors of 59%, while neural networks
resulted in errors of only 5%. Other predictions of rheology curves where neural networks have
shown a major improvement on predictability are the “Time Sweep” (TS) – 68% increase in
accuracy and “Low Shear” curve (LS) – 63% increase in accuracy. The smallest increase that the
neural network had on the predictability of a rheology curve, was a 33% increase in accuracy of
the “Amplitude Sweep” (AS) predictions.
Multiple linear regression models of MODEL 2 predict the critical paint properties of Opacity,
Gloss, Krebs Viscosity and Dry Film Thickness with relative errors smaller than 10%. It has been
shown that 90% of all new predictions fall within the allowable error margin set by the paint
manufacturer. Paint properties that can be predicted with an expected error of between 10% and
20% are Dry and Wet Burnish, Open Time and Water Permeability. Paint properties that are
predicted the most inaccurately by MLR, that results in errors larger than 20% are Dirt Pick-Up
and Sagging. Non-linear techniques such as neural networks are used to predict the paint
properties of these paint samples for which the raw materials vary by more than 20% from the
standard formulation. The neural networks show a major improvement on the predictability of the
paint properties for those paint samples that vary more than 20% from the standard formulation.
On average, neural networks improve predictability of the paint properties by 47%. The largest
improvement in predictability is made on the Wet Burnish20 prediction, where multiple linear
regression resulted in relative errors of 66%, while neural networks resulted in errors of only 0.6%.
Other paint property predictions where neural networks have shown a major improvement on
predictability of 80% or more in accuracy are Gloss – 80% increase in accuracy and Dry Film
Thickness – 81% increase in accuracy. The smallest increase that the neural network had on the
predictability of a paint property, was a 33% increase in accuracy of the Sag predictions. MODEL
2 makes it possible for the paint manufacturer to test tolerances around certain paint properties
during manufacturing.
Rheology is still a very under-utilised tool for explaining certain paint properties. MODEL 3
quantified the correlation between fundamental rheological properties and real world performance
of a paint. It has been shown that rheological measurements can be used accurately to predict
certain critical paint properties such as Opacity, Krebs Viscosity, Dry Film Thickness and Gloss
within the allowable error margin given by the paint manufacturer. Multiple linear regression
models predict the paint properties of Opacity, Krebs Viscosity and Dry Film Thickness with
relative errors smaller than 10%, with rheology as input to the model. A neural network of MODEL
3 was developed to predict the paint properties of those paint samples that vary more than 20%
from the standard formulation, by using rheology data as input to the model. The neural networks
perform better than multiple linear regression in predicting the paint properties of these paint
samples. On average, neural networks that use rheology data as input, predict the paint
properties 49% more accurate than equivalent multiple linear regression models. The greatest improvement in model predictability is for Water Permeability - 73% increase in accuracy and
Gloss - 70% increase in accuracy....

Com isto, é difícil para uma seguradora cumprir com tais requisitos sem mapear e organizar o fluxo de informação respeitante ao processo de Solvência II. Neste sentido, as companhias de seguros portuguesas não são excepção.
Este relatório decorre de um estágio na CA Seguros, uma companhia de seguros portuguesa. O principal objectivo deste estágio foi mapear e documentar todo o processo de Gestão de Informação para reporte quantitativo (Pilares 1 e 3) respeitante ao processo de Solvência II. Para tal, é avaliada a possibilidade de mapear o processo de Solvência II de uma empresa com um modelo de processos de negócio utilizando Cadeias de Processo Conduzidas por Eventos.
Seguindo essa linha de pensamento, é apresentada a revisão de literatura sobre Solvência II, Gestão de Processos de Negócio, Modelação de Processos de Negócio e Cadeias de Processos Conduzida por Eventos. Foi desenvolvida uma metodologia baseada na documentação de processos de acordo com a abordagem de Modelação de Processos de Negócio e a técnica de modelação Cadeias de Processo Conduzidas por Eventos.
Os resultados mostraram que o modelo de processos de negócio foi eficaz, fornecendo uma colecção de documentação viável dentro das limitações das Cadeias de Processo Conduzidas por Eventos.<br>Solvency II brought some challenging requirements for insurance companies concerning the amount and periodicity of the reported information. Hence, it is difficult for an insurer to comply with such requirements without mapping and organizing the flow of information regarding the process of Solvency II. With reference to this subject, the Portuguese insurance companies are no different.
This report follows an internship at CA Seguros, a medium sized Portuguese insurance company. The main objective of this internship was to map and document the whole process of Information Management for quantitative reporting (Pillars 1 and 3) on Solvency II. Hence, the possibility of mapping a company?s Solvency II process with a business process model using Event-driven Process Chains is assessed.
Following this line of thought, literature review on Solvency II, Business Process Management, Business Process Modeling and Event-driven Process Chains is presented. A methodology based on process documentation in line with the Business Process Modeling approach and the Event-driven Process Chains modeling technique was developed.

There is a wide variety of drivers for business process modelling initiatives, reaching from organisational redesign to the development of information systems. Consequently, a common business process is often captured in multiple models that overlap in content due to serving different purposes. Business process management aims at exible adaptation to changing business needs. Hence, changes of business processes occur frequently and have to be incorporated in the respective process models. Once a process model is changed, related process models have to be updated accordingly, despite the fact that those process models may only be loosely coupled. In this article, we introduce an approach that supports change propagation between related process models. Given a change in one process model, we leverage the behavioural
abstraction of behavioural profiles for corresponding activities in order to determine a change region in another model. Our approach is able to cope with changes in pairs of models that are not related by hierarchical refinement and show behavioural inconsistencies. We evaluate the applicability of our approach with two real-world process model collections. To this end, we either deduce change operations from different model revisions or rely on synthetic change operations.

The main aim of this study is to investigate human understanding of process models and to develop an improved understanding of its relevant influence factors. Aided by assumptions from cognitive psychology, this article attempts to address specific deductive reasoning difficulties based on process models. The authors developed a research model to capture the influence of two effects on the cognitive difficulty of reasoning tasks: (i) the presence of different control-flow patterns (such as conditional or parallel execution) in a process model and (ii) the interactivity of model elements. Based on solutions to 61 different reasoning tasks by 155 modelers, the results from this study indicate that the presence of certain control-flow patterns influences the cognitive difficulty of reasoning tasks. In particular, sequence is relatively easy, while loops in a model proved difficult. Modelers with higher process modeling knowledge performed better and rated subjective difficulty of loops lower than modelers with lower process modeling knowledge. The findings additionally support the prediction that interactivity between model elements is positively related to the cognitive difficulty of reasoning. Our research contributes to both academic literature on the comprehension of process models and practitioner literature focusing on cognitive difficulties when using process models.

A major challenge to achieving business process agility is the fragmentation of business processes, especially in organizations with semiautonomous business units. This fragmentation manifests itself in the form of diversified business processes performing similar activities. To address this challenge and achieve synergies across business units, processes should be integrated. Extant research on business process management has not paid much attention to such integration. Motivated by this concern, the primary objectives of my research are: “1) to understand how integration of similar business processes is achieved by semiautonomous business units and 2) to develop a process modeling support system that can help find similarities among business process models to aid process designers and to empirically evaluate its effectiveness in supporting process modeling activities.” I use a two-phased approach to address above objectives. In the first phase, I draw upon the analytic concept of frames of reference to develop a socio-cognitive process model to understand cognitive processes of stakeholders involved in the business process integration. This is done by analyzing the shifts in frame salience and frame congruence to enable the development of common-yet-tailorable business process. Data collection was conducted at ManCo, a Fortune 500 manufacturing company that had undertaken a process integration initiative in its multi-billion dollar supply chain across its five business units. Using qualitative data analysis, I identify four frame domains. Shifts in the frame salience and congruence highlight how, through a series of events, process stakeholders bring about integration. Frames domains identified in phase 1 highlight how individual business units’ perceptions differ. The use of diverse terminologies to refer to similar concepts added to the inability of process designers to reuse existing process models. These observations motivated the design research conducted in the second phase. I develop a prototype system, BPSimilar, which helps users to retrieve semantically similar process models. The approach to retrieve process models combines structural and semantic similarity-matching. The need for such a mechanism to speed up the model development was suggested by the case study. The effectiveness of BPSimilar for improving performance of users is evaluated in a qualitative study using verbal protocol analysis.

Business process management aims at capturing, understanding, and improving work in organizations. The central artifacts are process models, which serve different purposes. Detailed process models are used to analyze concrete working procedures, while high-level models show, for instance, handovers between departments. To provide different views on process models, business process model abstraction has emerged. While several approaches have been proposed, a number of abstraction use case that are both relevant for industry and scientifically challenging are yet to be addressed. In this paper we systematically develop, classify, and consolidate different use cases for business process model abstraction. The reported work is based on a study with BPM users in the health insurance sector and validated with a BPM consultancy company and a large BPM vendor. The identified fifteen abstraction use cases reflect the industry demand. The related work on business process model abstraction is evaluated against the use cases, which leads to a research agenda.

Modelling and analysis of design processes is non-trivial and predicting the behaviour of such systems is especially challenging. Nonetheless, the effective planning of design projects is critical for many engineering companies. Based on the findings from a thorough literature review and an extensive industrial case study, this thesis identified four themes on which subsequent process analyses focused: modelling and representation; scale and connectivity; rework, and the product-process link. The case study also provided a deeper understanding of the practical challenges of planning in industry. In order to meet these challenges, both the Signposting modelling framework and simulation tool were enhanced to provide increased functionality for process modelling, representation and analysis. Further, novel approaches for process analysis - the use of hypothetical models and confidence profiles that link product and process information - were proposed. A software tool was developed to automatically generate such hypothetical models. Simulation analyses were performed on both hypothetical and real-world models. The results elucidated the effects of structural variations in terms of scale and connectivity on project performance. They also showed how task reordering due to rework can lead to major process delays, even when the time taken to rework failed tasks is extremely short. Further, the simulation analyses demonstrated how confidence profiles could be used to identify rework early in the process and reduce the resulting project schedule impact. The results from the simulation analyses were evaluated against historical data from the case study company and heuristics for design planning were defined. Overall, this research demonstrated how simulation analysis of both real-world and hypothetical models, using the enhanced Signposting tool, can provide useful insights into design process planning.

Research findings in requirements engineering (RE) report that software organizations still struggle in establishing processes that lead to proper requirements handling. This leads to the acknowledgement that the adoption of good requirements engineering practices by industry is still not common. Although some initiatives have been made to spread the use of good practices of bespoke RE, the area of market-driven requirements engineering (MDRE) still lacks a contribution in that direction. MDRE is characterized by strong market and strategic orientation, which contrasts with the customer/development organization relationship of bespoke RE. This poses several challenges to software product organizations, such as the need for aligning development activities with organizational and product strategies. In an attempt to help these organizations to realize the benefits of MDRE, this Master Thesis presents the Market-Driven Requirements Engineering Process Model (MDREPM). MDREPM is both a collection of good practices in MDRE, and an assessment tool for organizations to get a snapshot of the current state of their MDRE practices. The assessment intends to reveal problem areas of organization’s requirements process, which can then be worked upon by introducing good practices described in the model. The thesis describes the motivation for creating MDREPM, both from an academia and industry perspectives. In addition, it describes the process of developing the model, from its creation through to its validation within academia and industry. As the series of three case studies conducted indicate, the MDREPM has been shown to be useful for industry practitioners. A unanimous opinion has been found as to the good coverage it provides of issues related to MDRE, and as to its usefulness for driving improvement efforts in requirements engineering.

The requirements phase of software development is an on-going problem for the software engineering community. The many disparate recommendations and best practices found in the literature make it difficult for software organisations to recognise which practices apply to their individual needs. The aim of this thesis is to pull together key solutions into a framework that allows practitioners to assess where their requirements process needs strengthening and to provide a means in which improvements can be achieved. In this thesis I show how I design, develop and validate a model of requirements engineering processes. This requirements capability maturity model (R-CMM) adheres to the characteristics of the Software Engineering Institute's Software Capability Maturity Model (SW-CMM) and is designed to take practitioners from an immature process capability through to an advanced capability. I contribute to the body of knowledge in both software process improvement and requirements engineering (RE) by providing rigorous detail of how a process maturity framework is developed to support RE practices. The model is generic and should apply to many software development organisations. The R-CMM guides users towards a view of RE that is based on goals and is problem driven. The SW-CMM framework is transformed into a simplified model that relates goals and problems to individual RE practises.

Sustainability including the reporting requirements is one of the most relevant topics for companies. In recent years, many software providers have launched new software tools targeting companies committed to implementing sustainability reporting. But it’s not only companies willing to use their Business Intelligence (BI) solution, there are also basic principles such as the single source of truth and tendencies to combine sustainability reporting with the financial reporting (Integrated Reporting) The IT integration of sustainability reporting has received limited attention by scientific research and can be facilitated using BI systems. This has to be done both to anticipate the economic demand for integrated reporting from an IT perspective as well as for ensuring the reporting of revisable data. Through the adaption of BI systems, necessary environmental and social changes can be addressed rather than merely displaying sustainability data from additional, detached systems or generic spreadsheet applications. This thesis presents research in the two domains sustainability reporting and Business Intelligence and provides a method to support companies willing to implement sustainability reporting with BI. SureBI presented within this thesis is developed to address experts from both sustainability and BI. At first BI is researched from a IT and project perspective and a novel BI reporting process is developed. Then, sustainability reporting is researched focusing on the reporting content and a sustainability reporting process is derived. Based on these two reporting processes SureBI is developed, a step-by-step process method, aiming to guide companies through the process of implementing sustainability reporting using their BI environment. Concluding, an evaluation and implementation assesses the suitability and correctness of the process model and exemplarily implements crucial IT tasks of the process. The novel combination of these two topics indicates challenges from both fields. In case of BI, users face problems regarding historically grown systems and lacking implementation strategies. In case of sustainability, the mostly voluntary manner of this reporting leads to an uncertainty as to which indicators have to be reported. The resulting SureBI addresses and highlights these challenges and provides methods for the addressing and prioritization of new stakeholders, the prioritization of the reporting content and describes possibilities to integrate the high amount of estimation figures using BI. Results prove that sustainability reporting could and should be implemented using existing BI solutions.

The subject of this Thesis is that of engineering design. The primary objective of the Thesis is to produce a model of the engineering design process. This model represents the way engineering design takes place regardless of the scale of the design project or the type of object which is being designed. The model is consensus based and has been produced through an extensive review and analysis of literature, (the literature review being completed in 1987) taken both from the field of engineering design and from disciplines concerned with related issues. In addition to the review and analysis of literature, a large number of interviews and consultations were undertaken with design experts and designers. The Thesis is divided into three main sections. The first section is concerned with a discussion of the evidence gained through the processes of literature review and interview/consultation. The second with a description of the model and its origin. The third is concerned with a description of the means by which design takes place. The model is essentially sequential, but has also incorporated the major elements of process type models of design. By demonstrating that an accommodation is possible between these two design theory approaches, an advance has been made into the understanding of the way in which design takes place. The model consists of sequential stages each of which characterises a major type of activity wi thin the process and which describe the design process from the initial perception of need through to the production of the finalised design configuration. Designs are developed by passing iteratively through these stages. Solutions and partial solutions, along with other design information are stored within the Blackboard. The means by which designs are developed is also examined in terms of the type of aid they give the designer, and their informatie relationship to the design process.

On average over the last 30 years 50% of all mergers and acquisitions have failed, with a third of all these failures having been caused by poor integration. This study sets out to examine a potential solution to improve the chances of integration success. An evaluation of the published acquisition integration process models that had strategic alignment of the acquisition strategy at their core was carried out and these were found to be incomplete and deficient in various aspects, including integrating fit factors, defined process stages and their interconnectedness. A conceptual acquisition integration process model was developed, based on a review of the literature which was subsequently used to design an appropriate research methodology to enhance and validate this model. In subsequent field work a qualitative case study approach, incorporating interviews, documents and comparative data analysis, was undertaken using four organisations and sixteen interviews, to assess how those organisations carry out the integration process. The results were combined with the conceptual model to develop an interim integration process model. This model was subsequently tested on the previous case organisations through semi-structured interviews. The conceptual process model was re-appraised and an internal and a limited external validation study were carried out on the revised model. From this the final complete acquisition integration process model and acquisition planning and integration implementation ‘onion’ was developed that is both practical and empirically tested, albeit on a small sample set.

This thesis attends to process management approach. It describes reasons and circumstances that led organizations to focus on this area. Especially the unsuitable quality of managing and opportunities for better match of values and processes are important. Fashion wave also plays an important role, which gives thanks to words such a process and models are inflected quite often. Approaches to the implementation of process management are various. The fundamental difference between them is the form of attitude to chase. Some of them require radical changes in processes and wants to build them from nothing. The others prefer to gradually improve them step by step. The most common variant, which usually best fit, is to mix these approaches. The tools and methodologies are needed for implementation also. One such tool is the Metastorm BPM. The outcome of the project, which is described in practical section of this thesis, was created with its utilization. Project goal was to implement process management for project management. Use of Metastorm BPM tool allowed simple implementation of required processes, including management and user functionality.
